50 New Interesting Discoveries Around The World, Shared On This Facebook Page With 471k Followers
InterviewThe earth is full of wonders, whether you're talking about historical or modern marvels, technical and architectural achievements, or breathtakingly beautiful geological and natural wonders.
Surprisingly enough, people rarely pay attention to the tiny yet intricate things around us, unless you're talking about the world's new seven wonders, that is.
The 'World Beauties and Wonders' Facebook group, created by a Turkey-based Anatolian Leo, has a collection of natural wonders compiled into one place, and today we are sharing some of the best images taken across the globe with you as well. In 1960, David Latimer Planted A Tiny Garden Inside Of A Large Glass Bottle And Sealed It Shut
He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.
For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.
A few millennia and the organisms will be mutated enough to be considered separate species from the original ones it was seeded with.
Yes, it was pretty common back in the 70's, but I always did wonder how they got carbon dioxide. One more mystery solved by the internet.
Load More Replies...This gives me hope that someone will open up our bottle to add water 💧
"Breaking down oxygen into carbon dioxide" is more or less the opposite of what's happening.
"The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth." No, that bottle is in much safer and wiser hands.
Not earth. Our ecosystem isn't balanced anymore. We tipped it via cutting trees and not replanting them.
With that being said, Bored Panda reached out to Farrah Etcheverry, who is a co-owner of Etcheverry Land Surveying which provides Land Measurement and Geographic Mapping services for clients located in the Southwest. The Most Beautiful Corn On This Planet. It's A Native American Variety Called 'Glass Gem Corn' And Yes It Really Does Grow Like That
Apparently Glass Gem Corn is a type of ‘flint corn’ which is grown not for eating off the cob, but for making popcorn, or grinding into cornflour. With ‘flint corn’, the corn is left on the plants to dry. The kernels will eventually begin to lose their shine and vibrancy and dry out.
I’ve grown glass gem corn before! It’s definitely unpalatable and almost inedible as corn on the cob, but dried they make gorgeous decorations as they retain all the translucent vibrancy and colors you see above! They’re not as shiny as they are when alive, but still 100% as colorful and vibrant. I have some in my kitchen that I grew almost a decade ago.
Load More Replies...Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer from Oklahoma developed this style of corn by selectively breeding heirloom varieties of Indian corn. My great grandmother had cobs of this that she grew hanging up in the kitchen. We made popcorn with them. I guess she just hung them and dried them out. Not sure. We always just called it Indian corn.

Not a lot of people actually know that a profession such as land surveyor exists, and even if some do, there is a small number of individuals who actually know what the role consists of. Farrah shared what she does on a daily basis as well as some facts about her job overall.
“You are correct, not very many people know what a land surveyor is or does. In essence, we are professional measurers. On a daily basis, I work on projects like boundary surveys for both large plots of land and small residential ones, topographic surveys to show the lay of the land, construction layout/staking, ALTA surveys, volume calculations of large quantities of natural material, and more!“ She told Bored Panda.

We previously mentioned that Farrah is a co-owner of a land surveying company, so we asked her if it was more of a freelance type of work or if they were getting contracted by states or even private firms. “I am the co-owner of our land surveying company, there are lots of small survey businesses, and also larger engineering firms who employ land surveyors. In a lot of states, each county also has a surveyor on staff.”
Speaking more about the land surveyor's job, Etcheverry also shared with us some of the hardest things about the work she does. “The hardest part about my job, at least right now, is keeping up with the workload. There is so much work and not enough surveyors to go around, so timelines for finishing projects become the most stressful part.”

Incredible Photo Captures A Woodpecker Flying With A Weasel On Its Back
The remarkable shot was taken by Martin Le-May while he was walking with his wife through Hornchurch Country Park in Havering, London.
The weasel was trying to eat the woodpecker. The weasel took off after the photo was taken, saving the woodpecker's life.
Lol. Little mink or weasel or whatever the little guy is has eyes bigger then it’s stomach. If he lives he probably start eating hummingbirds after this.

I believe that this is Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu-- it says her name at the bottom of the photo.
Interestingly enough, because of how niche her field is, Farrah actually has the ability to choose if she wants to travel around or not. “Because surveying is such a niche profession, we have the ability to choose either to travel around (become licensed in multiple states) or to primarily work locally. We do a bit of both, our main hub is my hometown and surrounding cities, but we travel all over Arizona to work. I have also traveled to Hawaii for survey work as well.”

Madagascar is like a whole other world. An isolated ecosystem that must be preserved.
Most of Madagascar is now barren desert. the amount of deforestation there is crazy. it used to be almost like a lush forest throughout the entire island now only a small part of the trees are left
If all of that sounds interesting to you, Pandas, well, Farrah also explained to us what kind of tools one needs to get the job done. “We use a litany of tools to perform our job accurately. On the daily, we use a robotic total station, GPS base and rover, drone, and processing software for data crunching and drafting.”
We haven't touched much on the topic of the maps, therefore we asked Etcheverry to explain to us what a finished map consists of. “Mapping is one of my favorite parts of surveying, seeing the finished fieldwork on the paper presented in a way the client can understand and use the information is incredibly satisfying! What a particular map includes is dependent upon the type of survey that was performed, but all maps should include basics such as a title, the location of the property, a north arrow, scale, and legend if necessary.” She explained to us.

I have a feeling the watermark (Squirrel_Nutz) is the reason they are all hanging out waiting for a meaty treat. Someone is making meatballs.
I live in Washington state and this could happen here. On my property I only get them in my trees sometimes, and once one stole one of my ducks. But there are places nearby where at the right time of year there might be 15 or 20 sitting in a single tree. These ones are being fed. Or at least I'm guessing that because they tend to stay up higher except for food. Also the crows. They don't get along but will both show up for food.

The Water In Both Tanks Is From The Same Time And Place. The Tank On The Right Has Oysters
In the Chesapeake bay before they were over fished the oysters could turn over all of the water in one week. Now it takes over a year.
Tom Scott did a really cool video on how oysters in Poland are being used to filter some of their water systems: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i0RkEs3Xwf0
New York Bay once had millions of oysters; harvesting and pollution wiped them out, but they've been reintroduced for their filtering properties
The mussels filter the water making it clear. The same is happening in the Great Lakes. Invasive mussels give greater visibility but THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING. They don't leave nutrients for native species.
Farrah already mentioned that her field is quite a niche one so we asked her if getting into this profession was something she dreamed of as a child or if it it was something that happened gradually. “It wasn't my childhood dream to become a surveyor, I thought I would end up somewhere in the field of healthcare. It wasn't until I was about 19 that I seriously considered going to work for my dad who at that point had owned his own survey company for about 15 years. He is the only reason that I knew what a surveyor was and he showed me how fun and fulfilling it could be as a profession.”

Statistically, a lot more men work as land surveyors, we asked Etcheverry to explain to us why the profession isn't as popular with women as it is with men.
“I think the reason surveying historically has been less popular to women is because of the pre-conceived idea that all it is is days and days of hard labor, cutting line, pounding hubs, surrounded by men who curse and chew tobacco. But that simply is not the case, while yes, there is hard labor involved, digging, hammering, hiking, chopping, etc... there is also a lot of mind work to be done, solving new problems every day, piecing new puzzles together. I think if more women saw the analytical side of what a surveyor does, they may take a bit more interest!”
The Western Australian Town Installed Nets On The Outlet Of Drainage Pipes, Preventing Solid Waste And Gross Pollutants From Leaving The Sewers
Most cities have more elaborate mechanisms for trapping solid waste before it it's the blue water. At least they do here in the States.
Load More Replies...Oh my ... I've recently had a debate about microplastics in wastewater, and how they end up in the sea. The guy I debated with said that, because currently, devices meant to remove plastic particles from wastewater can only catch about 50...60 % of it, it wouldn't be of use to install them in greater scale. I opposed this, because if doing nothing is the result of not having a perfect solution on hand right now, the 50...60 % that it would be able to catch are there by choice, and a problem of such scale and impact, even if not resolved entirely, deserves being reduced by whatever means we can employ and make work - even if it was even less, I'd still prefer reducing the problem's further growth over doing nothing. If we find a better solution, we can carry on installing these on the treatment facilities that currently aren't equipped with any attempt to reduce, and later install the better ones on those that got the first feasible solution.
Wow in So Cal we put huge treatment plants at the end of our sewer pipes!

Load More Replies...Probably a dumb question but for how long has it been called “the blue dragon river”? Dolphin Baby In Mother's Womb, How Amazing Is This
Captured using revolutionary four-dimensional imaging technology and anatomically accurate models, scientists have managed to shed light on the world of mammals inside the womb.
As diverse a bunch as they are - elephant, dog, dolphin and penguin are all shown united by their similar stages of development.
Scientists captured the images for a National Geographic Documentary called 'Animals in the Womb'.
The images were also used on a Channel 4 documentary 'Animals in the Womb' which aired in 2009.
They were created by using a combination of ultrasound scans, computer graphics and small cameras -as well as some carefully created models- to document the animals’ development from conception to birth, and give an unparalleled glimpse into a world that few of us would ever expect to see.

General Sherman is a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) tree located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in Tulare County, in the U.S. state of California. By volume, it is the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth. It is estimated to be around 2,200 to 2,700 years old. While General Sherman is the largest currently living tree, it is not the largest historically recorded tree. The Lindsey Creek tree, with more than 90,000 cubic feet (2,500 cubic meters) almost twice the volume of General Sherman, was reported felled by a storm in 1905. Another larger coast redwood, the Crannell Creek Giant, a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) cut down in the mid-1940s near Trinidad, California, is estimated to have been 15–25% larger than the General Sherman Tree by volume. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Sherman_(tree)
Of course, it was cut down. I'm surprised noone cut down this beaut, yet.

Idk man, a lack of enthusiasm for the mixing of colours sounds pretty American south to me.
Load More Replies...This phenomenon is common where one flowing body of water combines with another body of water. Its called a plume. They do mix eventually. Think pouring milk/cream into coffee/tea. They stay separate until it gets swirled a bit. The one on the left has been running over soil with higher silt and different minerals in it (milk) than the other one. The plume of big rivers like the Amazon or Nile hitting the ocean can be seen from space.

The Tetri Aragvi (“White Aragvi”) flows from Gudauri down to the town of Pasanauri, where it is joined by the Shavi Aragvi (“Black Aragvi”), before flowing south to merge with the Mtkvari River by Mtskheta, the Eastern Georgia’s ancient capital city, just north of Tbilisi.

Les Voyageurs By Bruno Catalano
I'm stuck when seeing art like this. Part of me like it because I haven't seen anything like this before. But I don't know if I like it "missing" piece's.
Here’s some context that may make you see this sculpture in a different light! The sculptor became a sailor in his 20s. He traveled all over the world, but he became of the opinion that “seeing the world” doesn’t always “broaden your horizons”. Catalano lamented that all his travels left him “feeling that a part of [him] was gone and will never come back.” So while the theme is melancholy, perhaps the insight into the artist’s mindset will make you feel differently about the missing pieces :)

The 7ft-High Blade Angel Is A Sculpture Of 100,000 Knives That Have Killed People Across The UK. Knives Were Collected From 43 Police Stations And A Memorial Dedicated To The Victims
And the angel is a damn sight bigger than 7ft. I've seen it in a couple of different places and it's about 15-20 ft high.
Yes, I hadn't even picked up on that bit of the title. It is actually 27ft (8m).
Load More Replies...Misleading title. The knives were collected via knife amnesties and weapons surrenders and some of the knives had been seized by the police. Yes, some were apparently received by the project still in evidence packaging and some even included traces of blood, but that does not mean all the knives have killed someone. https://www.britishironworkcentre.co.uk/the-making-of-the-knife-angel/
I know that not all of these knives have killed people, but I had a friend who was robbed and killed with a knife a few months ago in our hometown, so I can’t express how much this means to me.
They've just done a new one of a bee made from guns. Called 'Bee Free' or something.

Load More Replies...A bit more factual accuracy on this sculpture (from Wikipedia): The Knife Angel (also referred to as the National Monument Against Violence & Aggression) is a contemporary sculpture formed of 100,000 knives created by artist Alfie Bradley and the British Ironworks Centre, based in Oswestry, England. Completed in 2018, the structure of the angel stands at 27 ft (8.2 m) tall. In order to create the sculpture, 200 knife banks were produced by the Ironworks and amnesties held for individuals to anonymously donate their knives. Knives seized by police were also included, some of which arrived in evidence tubes still with bodily fluids on their surface. The sculpture was created in order to highlight knife crime in the United Kingdom and educate young people on the harmful effect violent behaviour can have on their communities
100,000 people have not been killed via knife in the UK, that's absurd. We're not America and they're not guns. Nor have they killed anyone at all, obviously. Those that have are kept as evidence for a period of time and then destroyed. The idea of putting blood stained ones on a sculpture is laughable. That doesn't negate the fact that knife crime is still a massive problem amongst the yoots.
This should have been voted much higher. It is making a very necessary statement in the strongest of ways.
Amazing Ancient Wonder: The Giant's Causeway In Co Antrim Consists Of More Than 40,000 Hexagonal Basalt Columns Which Were Formed When Magma Spurted Through Cracks In The Earth's Surface 60 Million Years Ago
Not quite true. Fingal’s Cave is found on the Isle of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides, just west of the Isle of Mull. It is a sea cave, but not like any other cave. It is formed entirely of hexagonally jointed basalt columns, similar to the ones forming the Giant’s Causeway, on the north coast of Ireland. So it's similar to, but not part of the Giant's Causeway.

Not stupid at all, curiosity is admirable :) It’s not wood, it’s rock. Utroba Cave, Bulgaria
Cave in the Rhodope mountains, Bulgaria, carved by hand more than 3000 years ago (?), it was rediscovered in 2001. Archeologists hypothesize that an altar built at the end of the cave, which is about 22 m deep, represents either the cervix or the uterus. At midday, light seeps into the temple through an opening in the ceiling, projecting an image of a phallus on to the floor. When the sun is at the right angle, in late February or early March, the phallus grows longer and reaches the alter, symbolically fertilizing the womb before the sowing of the spring crops.

Two Seas That Meet But Do Not Mix. Golf D'alska
From Lateet website: "Not two oceans – but a glacier melting and the other is the offshore water of Gulf of Alaska. The melting water of glacier is mineral rich and sediment-laden; other is saline water. The first one being lighter in density has light blue color, while the salt content makes sea water density heavy, giving it a dark blue shade. This variation in water density brings that difference in colors. However, the temperature and salinity level difference are also responsible for keeping the water bodies dissimilar."

Considering they used only saws and axes, it was impressive how they managed to bring down those giant trees. Furthermore, it is even more impressive how they managed to transport them using just horses and oxen, as well as further process them. But, it was the peak time for logging and nothing could stop the progress in the expanding America.
With a modern perspective, i would not call cuttuing down thousands of years old trees progress. I would rather call it an unforgivable sin.
But from their perspective, they needed lumber to build shelter and firewood to survive. Letting smaller trees continue to grow was insurance for future (and necessary) lumbering. Pretty easy for us to judge 100+ years later.
