The earth is full of wonders, whether you're talking about historical or modern marvels, technical and architectural achievements, or breathtakingly beautiful geological and natural wonders.

Surprisingly enough, people rarely pay attention to the tiny yet intricate things around us, unless you're talking about the world's new seven wonders, that is.

The 'World Beauties and Wonders' Facebook group, created by a Turkey-based Anatolian Leo, has a collection of natural wonders compiled into one place, and today we are sharing some of the best images taken across the globe with you as well. If you'd love to see the previous post on Bored Panda too, then make sure to click here for part 1.

In 1960, David Latimer Planted A Tiny Garden Inside Of A Large Glass Bottle And Sealed It Shut

In 1960, David Latimer Planted A Tiny Garden Inside Of A Large Glass Bottle And Sealed It Shut

He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.
For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.

Apparently Glass Gem Corn is a type of ‘flint corn’ which is grown not for eating off the cob, but for making popcorn, or grinding into cornflour. With ‘flint corn’, the corn is left on the plants to dry. The kernels will eventually begin to lose their shine and vibrancy and dry out.

I’ve grown glass gem corn before! It’s definitely unpalatable and almost inedible as corn on the cob, but dried they make gorgeous decorations as they retain all the translucent vibrancy and colors you see above! They’re not as shiny as they are when alive, but still 100% as colorful and vibrant. I have some in my kitchen that I grew almost a decade ago.

Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee farmer from Oklahoma developed this style of corn by selectively breeding heirloom varieties of Indian corn. Barnes died in 2016 and developed the corn during the recent 20th century. https://www.businessinsider.com/the-story-behind-glass-gem-corn-2013-10?amp

Not a lot of people actually know that a profession such as land surveyor exists, and even if some do, there is a small number of individuals who actually know what the role consists of. Farrah shared what she does on a daily basis as well as some facts about her job overall.

“You are correct, not very many people know what a land surveyor is or does. In essence, we are professional measurers. On a daily basis, I work on projects like boundary surveys for both large plots of land and small residential ones, topographic surveys to show the lay of the land, construction layout/staking, ALTA surveys, volume calculations of large quantities of natural material, and more!“ She told Bored Panda.

We previously mentioned that Farrah is a co-owner of a land surveying company, so we asked her if it was more of a freelance type of work or if they were getting contracted by states or even private firms. “I am the co-owner of our land surveying company, there are lots of small survey businesses, and also larger engineering firms who employ land surveyors. In a lot of states, each county also has a surveyor on staff.”

Speaking more about the land surveyor's job, Etcheverry also shared with us some of the hardest things about the work she does. “The hardest part about my job, at least right now, is keeping up with the workload. There is so much work and not enough surveyors to go around, so timelines for finishing projects become the most stressful part.”

They normally kill rabbits 3 or 4 times their body size so they have a pretty sizeable appetite.

I am the passenger ... and I ride, and I ride ... ride through the City tonight ... ok, comrades, in all seriousness - the woodpecker is flying to safe his very life ... the weasel wil not make him go down, but once they landed, fight's on again. Weasel may have aimed for the bird's eggs, but got surprised by a protective parent bird who took weasel up to the sky to ... rid the nest of invasive neighbours.

Interestingly enough, because of how niche her field is, Farrah actually has the ability to choose if she wants to travel around or not. “Because surveying is such a niche profession, we have the ability to choose either to travel around (become licensed in multiple states) or to primarily work locally. We do a bit of both, our main hub is my hometown and surrounding cities, but we travel all over Arizona to work. I have also traveled to Hawaii for survey work as well.”

If all of that sounds interesting to you, Pandas, well, Farrah also explained to us what kind of tools one needs to get the job done. “We use a litany of tools to perform our job accurately. On the daily, we use a robotic total station, GPS base and rover, drone, and processing software for data crunching and drafting.”

We haven't touched much on the topic of the maps, therefore we asked Etcheverry to explain to us what a finished map consists of. “Mapping is one of my favorite parts of surveying, seeing the finished fieldwork on the paper presented in a way the client can understand and use the information is incredibly satisfying! What a particular map includes is dependent upon the type of survey that was performed, but all maps should include basics such as a title, the location of the property, a north arrow, scale, and legend if necessary.” She explained to us.

I live in Washington state and this could happen here. On my property I only get them in my trees sometimes, and once one stole one of my ducks. But there are places nearby where at the right time of year there might be 15 or 20 sitting in a single tree. These ones are being fed. Or at least I'm guessing that because they tend to stay up higher except for food. Also the crows. They don't get along but will both show up for food.

The mussels filter the water making it clear. The same is happening in the Great Lakes. Invasive mussels give greater visibility but THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING. They don't leave nutrients for native species.

Farrah already mentioned that her field is quite a niche one so we asked her if getting into this profession was something she dreamed of as a child or if it it was something that happened gradually. “It wasn't my childhood dream to become a surveyor, I thought I would end up somewhere in the field of healthcare. It wasn't until I was about 19 that I seriously considered going to work for my dad who at that point had owned his own survey company for about 15 years. He is the only reason that I knew what a surveyor was and he showed me how fun and fulfilling it could be as a profession.”

The colors are a bit enhanced here in the image above. I've attached a more realistic photo. The park, Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, is protected from development, but there are many tourist areas nearby for lodging. Brazil doesn't get a lot of American tourists, most of the people who come there are other Brazilians, or Europeans. It can be hard still, as in this part of Brazil it may be difficult to find English speakers, although I haven't been to Lençóis in 20 years. You can likely get by though if you speak Spanish or Italian, as our languages are similar enough to be inter-intelligible. istockphot...5baa7d.jpg istockphoto-863674520-612x612-639cccc5baa7d.jpg

Statistically, a lot more men work as land surveyors, we asked Etcheverry to explain to us why the profession isn't as popular with women as it is with men.

“I think the reason surveying historically has been less popular to women is because of the pre-conceived idea that all it is is days and days of hard labor, cutting line, pounding hubs, surrounded by men who curse and chew tobacco. But that simply is not the case, while yes, there is hard labor involved, digging, hammering, hiking, chopping, etc... there is also a lot of mind work to be done, solving new problems every day, piecing new puzzles together. I think if more women saw the analytical side of what a surveyor does, they may take a bit more interest!”

Oh my ... I've recently had a debate about microplastics in wastewater, and how they end up in the sea. The guy I debated with said that, because currently, devices meant to remove plastic particles from wastewater can only catch about 50...60 % of it, it wouldn't be of use to install them in greater scale. I opposed this, because if doing nothing is the result of not having a perfect solution on hand right now, the 50...60 % that it would be able to catch are there by choice, and a problem of such scale and impact, even if not resolved entirely, deserves being reduced by whatever means we can employ and make work - even if it was even less, I'd still prefer reducing the problem's further growth over doing nothing. If we find a better solution, we can carry on installing these on the treatment facilities that currently aren't equipped with any attempt to reduce, and later install the better ones on those that got the first feasible solution.

Amethyst from Uruguay is dark purple and amethyst from Brazil is a lighter purple and not as expensive. The Uruguayan amethyst usually has smaller crystals than the Brazilian amethyst but they are all beautiful.

She does look a lot more likely to the painting than most of those claiming to ... often, it's just a guy with a bald head and beard that, otherwise looks totally different ... nose, eyebrows, angle and distance of eye placement, all different - but not here. Here, one of the rare occasions is happening, and tihat being that she truly looks like the painted woman.

I looked this up because the posts here made me curious. On the other side of the structure shown here there is almost a village with chapels, a church, and other buildings. It is estimated that the original buildings were built in about 386 AD with additions over time. There is also a path that gives better access to the world. It is in the process of being restored and is a major tourist attraction in the region.

Probably a dumb question but for how long has it been called “the blue dragon river”? It obviously resembles a dragon but how would people on the ground know that before we were able to look down from above? A hot air balloon wouldn’t fly high enough, neither would a plane so the true shape of this river couldn’t have been accurately known until we got to space

Amazing it was named that. I’m guessing long before planes. If so how would they know it looks like a dragon? Maybe it was mapped..

Sadly blue dragon is not its real local name. Not a river either, it's a dam basin. Blue dragon is the nickname made up by tourists flying over it. More here in english https://www.sulinformacao.pt/en/2015/09/o-lago-do-dragao-azul-em-odeleite-deixou-os-chineses-de-olhos-em-bico/

Dolphin Baby In Mother's Womb, How Amazing Is This

Dolphin Baby In Mother's Womb, How Amazing Is This

Captured using revolutionary four-dimensional imaging technology and anatomically accurate models, scientists have managed to shed light on the world of mammals inside the womb.
As diverse a bunch as they are - elephant, dog, dolphin and penguin are all shown united by their similar stages of development.
Scientists captured the images for a National Geographic Documentary called 'Animals in the Womb'.
The images were also used on a Channel 4 documentary 'Animals in the Womb' which aired in 2009.
They were created by using a combination of ultrasound scans, computer graphics and small cameras -as well as some carefully created models- to document the animals’ development from conception to birth, and give an unparalleled glimpse into a world that few of us would ever expect to see.

If you see it, you see it. Clearly, this does resemble an anatomical structure that is to be found in humans, or in mammals in general, but, sure, not an eye or eye's socket. This one is a lot more interesting and fascinating. We, sometimes, like to insert another anatomical structure to be found in humans, often causing something to come out of this one that otherwise wouldn't ... really an impressive resemblance, this, to nothing less than a truly nice and well defined nostril.

This is a core of a old volcano. Indian legend shows in a painting a big bear climbing core and claw marks caused this. People have climbed this or started on top by helicopter and repelled down They even had a old stone ladder carved into that people climbed .It is located on North east side of Wyoming.

General Sherman is a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) tree located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in Tulare County, in the U.S. state of California. By volume, it is the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth. It is estimated to be around 2,200 to 2,700 years old. While General Sherman is the largest currently living tree, it is not the largest historically recorded tree. The Lindsey Creek tree, with more than 90,000 cubic feet (2,500 cubic meters) almost twice the volume of General Sherman, was reported felled by a storm in 1905. Another larger coast redwood, the Crannell Creek Giant, a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) cut down in the mid-1940s near Trinidad, California, is estimated to have been 15–25% larger than the General Sherman Tree by volume. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Sherman_(tree)

This phenomenon is common where one flowing body of water combines with another body of water. Its called a plume. They do mix eventually. Think pouring milk/cream into coffee/tea. They stay separate until it gets swirled a bit. The one on the left has been running over soil with higher silt and different minerals in it (milk) than the other one. The plume of big rivers like the Amazon or Nile hitting the ocean can be seen from space.

The Aragvi River and its basin are running along the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. The Zhinvali Dam, that was built on Aragvi river in 1986, and its 130 MW hydro-electric power station generate much of Georgia’s electric power, form the Zhinvali Reservoir, on the north-western shores of which rises the Ananuri castle with its 17th-century Church of the Assumption. The Tetri Aragvi (“White Aragvi”) flows from Gudauri down to the town of Pasanauri, where it is joined by the Shavi Aragvi (“Black Aragvi”), before flowing south to merge with the Mtkvari River by Mtskheta, the Eastern Georgia’s ancient capital city, just north of Tbilisi.

Here’s some context that may make you see this sculpture in a different light! The sculptor became a sailor in his 20s. He traveled all over the world, but he became of the opinion that “seeing the world” doesn’t always “broaden your horizons”. Catalano lamented that all his travels left him “feeling that a part of [him] was gone and will never come back.” So while the theme is melancholy, perhaps the insight into the artist’s mindset will make you feel differently about the missing pieces :)

Misleading title. The knives were collected via knife amnesties and weapons surrenders and some of the knives had been seized by the police. Yes, some were apparently received by the project still in evidence packaging and some even included traces of blood, but that does not mean all the knives have killed someone. https://www.britishironworkcentre.co.uk/the-making-of-the-knife-angel/

No those knives have not killed people. Those knives are retained for evidence even after trial. These knives have been confiscated, or given in knife amnesty. I've seen this sculpture. 100,000 people have not been murdered in the UK.

A bit more factual accuracy on this sculpture (from Wikipedia): The Knife Angel (also referred to as the National Monument Against Violence & Aggression) is a contemporary sculpture formed of 100,000 knives created by artist Alfie Bradley and the British Ironworks Centre, based in Oswestry, England. Completed in 2018, the structure of the angel stands at 27 ft (8.2 m) tall. In order to create the sculpture, 200 knife banks were produced by the Ironworks and amnesties held for individuals to anonymously donate their knives. Knives seized by police were also included, some of which arrived in evidence tubes still with bodily fluids on their surface. The sculpture was created in order to highlight knife crime in the United Kingdom and educate young people on the harmful effect violent behaviour can have on their communities

100,000 people have not been killed via knife in the UK, that's absurd. We're not America and they're not guns. Nor have they killed anyone at all, obviously. Those that have are kept as evidence for a period of time and then destroyed. The idea of putting blood stained ones on a sculpture is laughable. That doesn't negate the fact that knife crime is still a massive problem amongst the yoots.

Not quite true. Fingal’s Cave is found on the Isle of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides, just west of the Isle of Mull. It is a sea cave, but not like any other cave. It is formed entirely of hexagonally jointed basalt columns, similar to the ones forming the Giant’s Causeway, on the north coast of Ireland. So it's similar to, but not part of the Giant's Causeway.

Okay this may be a very stupid question but I want to learn. Is this a big tree stump that fell many years ago or is it rock? The yellow-ish gashes look like wood. Edited to add I always think this is what Noah's ark would look like to me. The ark from top to bottom.

Not stupid at all, curiosity is admirable :) It’s not wood, it’s rock. The layers you see are natural striations formed as layers of sediment (aka dirt, mud, etc) were laid down one by one over millennia and then slowly compressed/hardened into rock. If you do a Google image search for “rock strata”, you’ll find more pictures of this in other places! (I’m kind of a geology nerd, haha)

I love imagining people coming in out or building these building's. I used to be able to see homes that had apartments over the home where a school teacher would live. We don't have as many because they tear down and build apartments. I never realized how the world worked in the different era's. I worked at a nursing home and one resident had never married. I was like she is an 85yr. old virgin. I grew up on little house on the prairie and didn't know different. Now I know a little more. Thank the Lord.

    Utroba Cave, Bulgaria

    Utroba Cave, Bulgaria

Cave in the Rhodope mountains, Bulgaria, carved by hand more than 3000 years ago (?), it was rediscovered in 2001. Archeologists hypothesize that an altar built at the end of the cave, which is about 22 m deep, represents either the cervix or the uterus. At midday, light seeps into the temple through an opening in the ceiling, projecting an image of a phallus on to the floor. When the sun is at the right angle, in late February or early March, the phallus grows longer and reaches the alter, symbolically fertilizing the womb before the sowing of the spring crops.

From Lateet website: "Not two oceans – but a glacier melting and the other is the offshore water of Gulf of Alaska. The melting water of glacier is mineral rich and sediment-laden; other is saline water. The first one being lighter in density has light blue color, while the salt content makes sea water density heavy, giving it a dark blue shade. This variation in water density brings that difference in colors. However, the temperature and salinity level difference are also responsible for keeping the water bodies dissimilar."

It’s petrified wood. It’s not wood any more. It’s mineral deposits in the shape that the organic wood once was. There’s no way it can burn, as it is rock.

The Richest Tomb Of The Fifth Millennium Bc

In the 1970s, archaeological excavations in Bulgaria, near the modern city of Varna, identified a large Copper Age necropolis, dating back to the 5th millennium BC, which featured the oldest gold artifacts ever discovered until that time.
The most prestigious burial was tomb , inside which the remains of a man of the highest rank were found... the first elite male burial known in Europe.

The waxy pale skin weirded me out, but it turns out, according wikipedia, Neanderthals had pale skin and red hair as near as we can tell. I had assumed that most ancient hominids had darker skin and the lighter skin came later. It turns out it's an example of two separate hominid species moving to the same cold sunless biome. Ala convergent evolution. Now if we could just find an evolutionary explanation for Ted Cruz.

Thank you to all of our military people who have put their lives on the line for all of us. We need to do better for military and get them better help and better lives. No person should fight for us and come home to no support. Something needs to change. It's time for the Democrat's and the Republican's need to fight for what we need and not their own agenda's. We need to get help and our government need's to help.

I've been on that path, they aren't that scary, the angle of the photo makes them look worse than they actually are. They are narrow, it's easier to walk down them sideways so your foot is fully on the step. One trip, my husband and a friend were going down them and there was quite a crowd, so it was slow going. His idiot friend decided it would be quicker to jump down from terrace to terrace....not a smart move as he didn't stick the landing on the 3rd jump and blew out his knee and had to be carried down the rest of the trail on a rescue saucer.

The Beautiful Vettuvan Koil In The South Indian State Of Tamil Nadu, Is A Temple Dedicated To The Hindu God Shiva

Built by the people of the Pandya Dynasty, the unfinished rock-cut temple was carved in the 8th Century CE. It is unique in that it is the only Pandya era monolithic templeto be carved out in three dimensions from solid rock. Vettuvan Koil has two literal meanings in Tamil: one is Heaven of Sculptors and the other is Temple of the Slayer.

To be fair: these are reproductions, the original ones are to be seen in the museum at the Acropolis and, as was mentioned before, one in the British Museum. I suppose they were built the same way the other statues were built, marble is very strong.

According to Wikipedia, Mount Roraima is composed of Proterozoic age sandstone formed about 1.7 to 2 billion years ago, and hence amongst the oldest rocks on Earth. Okay, but that doesn't mean it is the oldest place on earth - 'amongst the oldest' doesn't mean it is the oldest.

There are young mountains and old mountains. Young ones are tall and pointed and old ones are rounder from being wore down.Just depends on when they were created. From tectonic activity or volcanic activity or whatever else. They haven’t always been on the surface poking up.

I don't quite disagree, but I doubt it was cut down only for this slice. I'd think they felled it for other purposes and took the opportunity for the demonstration.

We don't know it was cut down for no reason. In 1891 it was probably cut down for house or ship building. The slice may have been retained as a curious artifact while the rest of the tree was used for something.

Considering they used only saws and axes, it was impressive how they managed to bring down those giant trees. Furthermore, it is even more impressive how they managed to transport them using just horses and oxen, as well as further process them. But, it was the peak time for logging and nothing could stop the progress in the expanding America.

But from their perspective, they needed lumber to build shelter and firewood to survive. Letting smaller trees continue to grow was insurance for future (and necessary) lumbering. Pretty easy for us to judge 100+ years later.
