I always take breaks during stuff. Write a page? Check BP. Get down a piano measure? Read a page in my book. I can't work for long periods without breaks.

Time off and sleeping need to count for 80% of that. Healthy eating, not so much :)

As this is in £, it is a slight oversimplification of the UK tax system, as we also have something called National Insurance, which has a starting threshold and an upper limit. It used to pretty much coincide with the basic 20% rate of tax and was at that time 11%, meaning for the most part, you paid about 30% as a basic rate tax payer. It is still there, but I've not bothered working out the thresholds for a long time, as it is calculated on weekly income. It has just been dropped to 8% though. Note that N.I. is only paid by people in employment. Once you retire, you only pay income tax, no N.I.

Speak for yourselves, marginal tax rate is not a difficult concept. Though every extra amount over the threshold is taxed at the higher amount, so every pay rise or bonus.

I worked for a German company, and we were their only US group. Germany got tons of PTO, holiday closures etc. We had almost no holidays and very little PTO with 20 days MAX after 10 years. Would've been nice if they provided German benefits to us.

It would, but sadly most companies won’t give you more than they have to. It’s why many countries have legal minimums.

I live in Brazil. You have 30 days of paid leave every 12 months, but that's just a period where you can travel and rest. If you get sick, there's no limit. The company pays up to 15 days of sick leave, and from 16 days up, the government pays instead. You of course need to have a good reason for that. My mom had cancer and she was paid by the government for almost two years. The only downside is that you might not get as much money as when you're working, but at least you're not completely unsupported.

I live in the US and the only jobs I've had without PTO were entry level. I get 168 hours a year right now and that goes up to 192 hours a year in 2 years. I'm not part of a union. If you don't like the benefits your job offers get a different one.

I live in the US. I’ve had several jobs, and other than temp jobs, the only one that didn’t provide paid leave was a small business that probably couldn’t afford it (but they started providing it in 2020). Yeah, companies don’t have to do it, but most will provide some anyway so people will want to work for them.

Finland. You get 2 days off from each month you work if you’re been working for them less than a year. It’s 2,5 days off if been working longer than a year. Unfortunately, if your holiday is a full week, Saturday is also counted in. So basically old employees get 25 days PTO a year and with some planning, a few more days, e.g. Good Friday and Easter Saturday do not diminish the days so you save two days (or get two extra days if you will).

In the US any employee that belongs to a union or works for the government will have PTO agreements in place contractually. The other businesses are not required, but wont have many employees if they don't offer a vacation plan. I receive 160 hours a year, and if I have any time left it rolls over into the next year.

Infographics have been around for quite some time. While there are some ancient drawings and sketches that might fit the bill, the first “proper” infographics date back to the 16th century. In this particular case, it was a helpful (at least to some) graphic depicting the movement of the sun in the sky.

Later, the art of the graph and bar chart expanded with William Playfair’s The Commercial and Political Atlas, which depicted the economy of England. Interestingly, he is also considered the inventor of the pie chart in general.

Some of these good sentences are faulty to me as they show the speaker doesn’t care for others: « thank you for your patience » means you’re late, aware of it and won’t apologize. Others’ time is important, too, so be polite. Same for the error spotted: you can thank someone for telling you, indeed, but the very least is to apologize in proportion of the error, of course. I may be an alien but I have met too many « positive people » who avoid at all cost admitting they’ve been wrong. Self criticism is a token of respect and maturity to me.

To get rid of wrinkles, hanging in the bathroom just doesn't work, steam or no steam. Instead, buy a small spritz bottle that packs easily. When you go to put on your wrinkly shirt, fill up your little bottle and spritz the front and back really well, then put the shirt on right away. It will be damp, but no untolerable. By the time you go anywhere, it should be dry and much less wrinkly.

Me. I am the technical support staff. All one of me. Which on the one hand is great, as I can fix my own WFH problems. On the other hand it means all the real problems have to be diagnosed remotely. LOL

ok i work from home sometimes, and if i have an issue there is support for everything. this list feels like its specific to a certain job.

The second is false, most companies have flexible work hours assuming the employee does not have to work customer driven hours like retail. Number three, most offices do not have "strict dress codes " again excluding customer facing roles in which case, WFH is not an option. Number four may or may not be advantageous.

I get the general principles of this, but it really does depend on the workplace. My work-from-home job had more technical support than my current outside-the-home job, for example. My workplace now does not have a strict dress code, and my position requires a lot of self-discipline but has a lot of freedom & flexibility b/c I set my own hours, so there aren't strict work hrs either.

This is not ergonomic. The armrests on the seat need to be lower than the underside of the desk so that I can get the chair near enough to the desk! And that monitor is not an arm's length away as pictured. Well not unless they have really short arms!

I like my monitor to be lower than that: I am not a touch-typist and my head would be up and down like a yoyo if it were that high. Also, have lessons in Alexander Technique, and then you'll know how to sit, with no need for fancy chairs.

"Check the weather forecast for an idea of what kind of clothes you'll need". Except if you come to Galicia (in the northwest of Spain) where you'll need a raincoat, wellingtons and an umbrella, a warm coat, gloves and a scarf, shorts, light t-shirts and sunglasses because because you never know... You could need all of them even if you stay for a weekend. This year, we had over 20° C some days in January, and -2°C a few days later. Crazy!

Who still wears a blazer? I've never worn one (even at school). I have several suits that I no longer wear, but I used to regularly for work. If I was on a customer site, I would be in a suit, unless instructed otherwise. Such as when I was in Den Haag in February and there was ice on the canals, and I froze my bits off waiting for the tram in my summer suit and wool coat for a fortnight, as that is all I had brought. Third day I was told "we don't dress up here, you don't need to wear a suit". Well I had no choice until I went home and picked up some different clothes. Second fortnight was a lot warmer with my down ski jacket! :D

Explain the gap. That's my best advice. If you were taking care of kids mention that. If you were struggling with mental health or addiction say something along the lines of "I was unable to work due to a medical condition that is now well controlled." If you were just hanging out say you had chosen to be a homemaker or a caretaker but would now like to go back to work.

I had a boss who told me that there was a 3% raise available but to help the department if we all accepted 2% then they would be able to keep from any redundancies. I said of course. In conversation with collogues none of them were asked that question! I found out everyone got 3% except me. I wasn't happy, I trained over half of them!

Every company I have ever worked at, big and small, does annual performance reviews. Your raise comes after your review. The board and the CFO discuss increase caps. Where I work, everyone gets 3% every year.

How about an extroverts guide to leaving me the f**k alone. Or an extrovert's guide to shutting the hell up. I don't want to go to your stupid party Suzie, get out of my cubicle.

I prefer an office party where someone brings their kids. I entertain the kids, the parent handles adult conversation, and then someone tells me I'd make a great mom - which is flattering because menopause came and went a decade ago.

This one is ridiculous. Puts all the blame on the employee give them the bonus or promotion promised or give them the assistance to meet the targets. Sometimes the targets are so unrealistic they cant be met. That is on the employer not the employee

This is contextual. Sometimes the bad news is good news for other employees. Years back, I was so happy that a colleague got her dream job. My dream job was not having to work with her.
