After 8 Months Of Effort, I've Finally Finished Building My Marimba!
More up votes for this! Not only building that beautiful frame, but the time and dedication to selecting the wood for the bars and then removing excess wood to tune them to the proper pitch. Outstanding!
And 8 months is very quick! That would take me under 2 years! 😅
Load More Replies...Maybe the perspective is making it seem longer, but it looks like it would take about six people to play this thing. Very Impressive craftsmanship!
I played marimba in elem//middle school, I miss it. Was my minor at performing arts school
Redditor u/MeanCoach kindly shared the story behind the impressive photo where he's hanging on a wooden cabinet, showing how much he trusts his own work. The photo got 13.3k upvotes on the r/woodworking subreddit.
As it turns out, the cabinet was a gift for his grandmother.
"It was a cabinet made for my grandma's house, she's almost 88 and has been asking me for a new cabinet for a long time," he told Bored Panda.

Just Built This Ceiling!
It’s utterly gorgeous, but sadly the first thing my mind went to was the nightmare of keeping it clean/free of cobwebs XD normal ceilings only have four corners… this one has dozens XD
Load More Replies...The effort that you put into this is just simply amazing. Me, who has no woodworking skills whatsoever, can even appreciate this masterpiece.
"The one she had previously is more than a century old, and has many rotten parts, as she inherited it from her parents," the redditor explained that it was definitely the time for an upgrade!
At this point, the old cabinet wasn't as safe as the family would have liked.
"She [my grandma] has a lot of stuff," redditor u/MeanCoach said that she has plenty of plates, pans, and cookware in general.
Carved A Different Type Of Celtic Knot Out Of Walnut. These Things Are Trickier To Keep Consistent In Width And Depth Than I Gave Them Credit For. Each One Is A Learning Experience
This is most definitely already the winner in my book, painting these in a way that you create depth in the different parts is a challenge, what you did here is phenomenal!
Oh my!! Good Heavens!! I am absolutely without a doubt extremely impressed!!! May I ask what you are going to do with it? I am just enthralled!!!
Gonna Call This A Fan Leg Stool- Walnut And Teak
The guy who did this is by no mean a DIY beginner. The work is superb!
So neat! But I have trouble not seeing the dust bunnies and cobwebs 😣🙈
Walnut and teak are such gorgeous types of wood to work with, it's beautiful!

I just came back from a week of camping and this reminds me so much of hut I spent mich of my time in when most doing my presentations for NYLT ( National youth leadership training by Boy Scouts (yes I am a girl is Boy Scouts))
"So we were afraid that the cabinets wouldn't be able to hold it, the uppers specifically."
The whole project took just under a week to complete, spread out over less than a month.
"We spent 3 weekends on her home," the redditor told us. "1 [weekend] for the lowers, 1 for the uppers, and 1 for organizing the cabinets, putting the stuff of the old cabinets on the new ones."
The redditor also shared some advice about woodworking with Bored Panda's readers. "As grampa, who has been a machinist for more than 80 years, says, always triple-check everything before assembling it. It's a lot harder to fix things after than before."
2 Years And I’m Finally Done! Acoustic Guitar From Scratch!!
Honestly, as a music maker and woodworking enthusiast, I love the combination of artistic skills. People like this really put the 'king' in woodworking.
Ohh, my SO and I often watch crafting you tube videos in bed, this falls under "woodporn" making a guitar from scratch is next level craftsmanship. I can just hear her being played and making sounds like a dream.

Bird House My Kids And I Made. I’m A Mason Not A Woodworker So Take It Easy On Us
Not only did you guys create a great birdhouse for some very lucky birds, you have a wonderful memory of the time spent building it together. That is great parenting
This really is lovely, a memory that will create new memories for generations to come.
Awesome! The stone on the bottom is gorgeous and i love the shingles
It's wonderful. Put wood shavings inside and clean it out 2 to 4 times a year. You'll be rewarded with fluffy flying friends
The r/woodworking subreddit is absolutely massive. At the time of writing the online community had just over 4.6 million members. It’s been growing by massive leaps and bounds ever since it was founded in 2008. And it continues to expand.
The main draw of the community comes down to several factors. First of all, the subreddit encourages people to share their own work, meaning you can get feedback on your finished or ongoing projects. And the second part is that it is chock full of incredible photos. They’re a feast for the eyes and serve as inspiration.
Another part of the sub’s appeal is that it works as an actual community. If you have any questions about woodwork, need specific advice about a problem you have, or crave constructive criticism, everyone’s happy to help.
Saw Someone Else Posted A Bunk Bed… So Here’s One I Did A Few Months Ago!
Quite the set up. I can imagine being a kid and playing all over these. 🤣🤩
Bunk beds are metal tubing or wooden slats. The only way this qualifies as a bunk bed is if you live in Versailles or some Disney princess's castle.
Why thanks for clarifying that for us grumpy pants. Why not not post something you made so we can c**p all over it?

It's subreddits like this one that are proof that there are tons of kind and friendly people around the world. All it takes is a shared hobby to find them!
The only thing you have to do is follow the subreddit’s rules, as set out in the sidebar by the moderators. That means avoiding talking about religious and political topics. Meanwhile, threads “related to firearms, religion, or flags will be allowed but locked.”
Moreover, there’s to be no sale of items or self-promotion. Memes and low-effort posts are also to be avoided.

I just love your way of thinking ☺️ This one however is so beautiful, I'd still buy the $ 20 scraper and keep this one for decoration, it's too gorgeous!
Ah, I thought that was something different. Excuse me while I go hide my face from the world.
Recently, Bored Panda spoke about woodworking with Dr. Paul Bones, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Texas Woman’s University. He shared how he got into the hobby and also gave some advice to anyone who’s new to DIY and working with wood.
"I love woodworking for many reasons. I’m a disabled academic, so having the ability to make something tangible, something I can see and hold helps keep me grounded. And relatively sane,” he opened up.
“I also like how there is so much to learn and so much to make. I started turning pens, then went into bottle stoppers, then bowls. Lately, I’ve been working with inlay rings and knives. It’s just a lot of fun learning new skills, applying them, and watching myself improve,” the professor said.
“It also gives me time to just sit with myself, disconnect from deadlines and emails, and be more present in the moment. That’s what keeps me glued to woodwork," he told Bored Panda.
Wife Wanted A Table. I Made Her A Table
That's a table for generations to seat, beautiful! By the looks of it it's walnut ...
That's a nice table. 😍❤️😀 See, now she's going to keep asking you to make things. I know I would!
My New Studio Floor
this is very specific and makes perfect sense
Load More Replies...Same here. I can see a male lion with a beautiful mane looking towards the left. Either that or covid is making me hallucinate, lol
Load More Replies...According to OP: "I double scorched this floor before I applied the [Rit fabric] dye. Burned wood becomes a bit water resistant so the dye doesn't soak-in but instead rests on top of the wood. It's only after adding the poly did the colors shine. I diluted the dye in water, but I rarely measure so, I couldn't tell you the ratios. 'That looks about right' is my standard."
Dining Table I Just Finished
My heart beats faster when seeing masterpieces like this. The design and choice of wood is magnificent!
using burl and matching of veneers and inlay here is SUPER hard. 👏👏👏
Patience and adaptability, according to the professor, are key to woodworking. They’re as important as any tool. Perhaps even more so.
"Woodworking is a skill you have to hone; no one starts out as a master craftsperson. Also remember there are so many types of woodworking: woodturning, furniture building, carving, knife making, ring making, box making, etc. It may take a while to find the type of craft you like," he told Bored Panda during an interview, earlier.
Some Spent Covid Getting Fit, I Built A New Place To Sit!
Beautiful, but that seam... I'd run my buttcrack down it every time!
It’s all one solid piece. Stunning! Surrounded by family with woodworking talent, this is very impressive
I agree it is beautiful, however, I wouldn't sit in it because of the center bar in the backrest. Even numbered slats keeps your back between the slats not on them. Also, is the center of the seat raised? Nope on one piece. The rockers are made of three pieces. You can see the different types of wood. And the headrest is also a separate piece. You can see where and how it is attached.
Load More Replies...This is the most beautiful rocker I have ever seen! Excellent job!!😁👍
Looks Easy, Wasn’t Easy
Doesn't look easy, but the elegance just oozes out. Totally worth it, methinks.
That is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I adore everything about that table and normally I'm a rococo person. That tells you how good that table is that it took me away from my favorite design type.
Such a beautiful, delicate design! And that workshop, I'm not one to be jealous, but this is an exception to the rule ☺️
This looks like it's made out of one piece. You should be proud this is really beautiful.
Wife Wanted $600 Toddler Bed So I Said Hold My Beer And Built It!
I want one so all my stuffies stay put when we have a cuddle party.
and put a blanket above it to make it a tent!!
Load More Replies...This is so much more then a bed, it's a safe haven for your kiddo 😊
I want this! No matter what I do my daughter still manages to roll off the bed!
Load More Replies...I like the "easy in/easy out" factor. No tumbles to the floor headfirst climbing out.
I love how spacious it is, while still being safe... Not to mention it's beautiful....
According to the woodworking enthusiast, anyone who’s starting out with the hobby ought to watch a few how-to videos on YouTube. They’ll help quite a bit while you figure out what exactly it is that you’d like to work on.
"While you’re watching, think about what kinds of craft work with your temperament and existing skills. For example, I do not have the patience for hand carving or furniture making. But turning small items like pens, rings, bottle stoppers, and bowls? Those are fast enough projects where I can have a finished item in no time, and there’s enough variety that I won’t get bored," the professor said.
Now She's Finally Done. I Built A Garden Bench
It's going to be used by generations if well taken care of, it's lovely!
Still A Novice, But Here's A "Spell Tome" Dice Box I Just Made For My Boyfriend's Birthday :)
I love wooden books! But come on, "I'm still a novice" = humble brag. Gorgeous!
Hells yeah. It's not just well done on its own, it's also nice seeing you support something he loves, too. 🥰❤️
Do You Trust Your Work?
Wow, I'm planning on building my own kitchen from scratch this year, I hope it turns out as solid and as good looking as this! I've been watching lots of YouTube videos and drawing and redrawing the plans. 🤞
Good luck! They say the planning (and measuring) part is the most critical.
Load More Replies...Sure that looks sturdy, but how many Dave Grohls can you hang from it?
"There’s an old adage that a poor craftsman blames his tools, and that’s mostly true. Woodworking tools can be very expensive, and in some cases, price does equal quality. However, there are a lot of garages and shops full of topline equipment that can only produce mediocre items. Having the right tool for the job is really all that matters. Once you have experience with it, you’ll know when it’s time to upgrade. That’s a skill too," he explained.
Entryway Project
It's a beautiful table; and the thought a cat would really enjoy rolling things off it makes it even better.
It takes a lot of time and effort. There’s some YouTube videos showing how. But mostly people use water in various forms (soaking or steaming) and tools to hold the wood how they want while it dries. It takes a while for pieces this big.
Load More Replies...Wow 😍😍😍😍😍 that's incredible, I want to run my hand over that, it's gorgeous 😍 😍 😍
The Customer Wanted Blue They Got It Turned Out Good I Think
I agree, it complements the rest of the color scheme very well.
Load More Replies...A nice denim blue. I'd prefer a more saturated cobalt or lapis lazuli, but it came out nice. Love the sink, too.
I like the darker shade on the bottom and the lighter shade on the cabinets. To me, it seems to make the space seem more open.
Made This Navy Built In For A Client. They Liked It So That’s Good
I love it I have always liked built in book cases definitely would put this in my house
Same, that would be magical. Even more so with a hidden door.
Load More Replies...When we built our house years and years ago, I wanted a unit like this for our great room. It never happened, but this looks exactly like what I wanted.
"I started woodworking after a couple of cross-country moves for work. I needed a table and a desk. I didn’t have a lot of money at the time. I had worked in a furniture shop for six years prior to going to grad school, so I had practical experience putting items together," the professor had shared how he got started with woodworking in his spare time.
"A trip home for a funeral introduced me to life-edge wood, and after playing with it for a while, I was hooked. I didn’t have the room (or the patience) to build furniture all the time though, so a friend suggested a lathe to me. After making like 50 pens, my wife demanded we start trying to sell what I make."
White Spruce Skull - Carved With All Sorts Of Power/Hand Tools
My Very First Project, Kinda Sloppy But I Love It!
It's not sloppy, you created it and found solutions for the problems you stumbled upon while making it. That is craftsmanship. Nobody is born making million dollar pieces, it's a journey and you took a step in that direction. The skills you picked up with making this project, your next project will become better as well the next. Talent develops by thinking outside the box and trying it things. Keep it up, and forever keep this piece of art if only to see within 10 years how you've grown in your work.

I Recently Went To The Dentist And Unfortunately Got The Bad News I Had A Few Cavities. My Dentist Offered To Cover My Bill If I Would Help Make A Sign For His Business. I’m Going To Blame The Jolly Ranchers
I had a similar story. I needed two crowns pit on after one root canal and a broken tooth. I was talking to the Dentist and I told him I built a 1300 pound smoker after my wife volunteered me to feed the Homeless. On the 1st smoke on it I made 110 pounds of chicken for pulled chicken sandwiches. After, my appointment and was getting my next cleaning scheduled and they asked me what tooth did I want to get capped first. I told them I couldn't afford that now, but they insisted again what tooth. Another dentist came out and she asked him what tooth and he said just get both done. They gave me two crowns as a gift. Could not believe it.

Hypnogogia - A Guitar I've Made From Scratch And I'm Hella Proud Of
Honest question here…do the different shapes in the guitar contribute to a different sound? Or are they strictly for aesthetic purposes?
This is just a guess, but solid body electric guitars' sound is amplified, so I don't think the shape of the guitar body affects it. I play acoustic guitar.

Wife Wanted A New Counter Top. All Scrap Wood From The Shop. Seal Coat Done. No Flood Coat Yet
A flood coat is the final finish, done with a 2-part epoxy that is self-leveling. It creates a nearly indestructible finish.
Load More Replies...I love it, but at the least from the angle it was photographed, the slats give the optical illusion that it is slanted. I'd be worried that every time I set an orange on the counter, it would roll off the inside corner!😂
Aww this is gorgeous 😍 but I'm disappointed too, I want to see it finished in place 😔😮 I imagine it looks Incredible!!
Looks gorgeous! And for sure I'm jealous of your workshop, it's a dream come true 😉
Flood Coat is the one that's poured on there let set, then sanded and polished!
Customer Wanted A Big Wooden Dome With No Visible Hardware
Probably protective film against scratches, that is yet to be removed. Which would probably make that plastic, not glass. Plastic saves a lot of weight on a structure like this compared to glass. (Klar is one of the brands that makes PMMA and plexi)

I Created The Bench And Need To Get An Estimate On Value. Thoughts?
Go on line and search custom unique wood benches, or woodworkers. This is worth a lot
So when I worked in a high-end custom cabinet shop, one of the accessories we offered was called a wave bench. Basically just a bench of a size with this one, with the seats contoured for ergonomically accommodating buttcheeks. They usually ran between $2,000 - $3,500 USD, depending on the size and material. I would probably say around $2,200 to $2,500 USD for this, but maybe more depending on the material. Nice work, by the way!
Look online for similar objects to get a reference and then add some. If you price craftsmanship work like this to cheap, people will think they buy rubbish. If you overprice it, you won't sell it. Add a side table or two to sell as a set and you're name is made and you can both make a name for yourself and sell it at the highest bid because it's gorgeous!

To dry naturally, yes. If the moisture in the wood is too high it can shrink and/or warp and all that work would be wasted.
Load More Replies...Yeah, you gotta pour it in layers or wait forever. Glad it finally cured!
Anyone using slabs, especially trunk ring slab, or solid burls should look into PEG. No, it’s not antifreeze. You need a heated immersion tank - farm water troughs are good. A cheaper route is a plastic bag, like you’re marinating meat. PEG coats/fills the cells and prevents moisture transpiration. Cuts drying time way down
