Carpenter Makes Fun Of Ridiculous Window Shutters On This Instagram And Here Are 30 Of The Funniest Pics
Scott Sidler owns a historic window restoration company called Austin Historical in Orlando, Florida. He mainly works on pre-war buildings across the Southeastern United States but while Sidler is returning them to their former glory, he often notices ridiculous door, window, and shutter solutions.
"As a preservation contractor, I was constantly called in to fix mismatched windows and poor replacement shutters and I started taking pictures of the worst offenders to educate people about what a real window and real shutters should look like," Sidler told Bored Panda. "Shutters seem to be the most misunderstood and I see such awful applications that I thought a weekly series of fails would help people understand them better and get a good laugh at the same time."
Thus, #ShudderSunday was born.

"How is this even a thing? How can someone on this glorious Shudder Sunday think this looks better with shutters than without??"
You can stand safely on the ground and close or open the shutters on all three windows. How is this wrong?
Sidler has taken about half of the photos he has featured in the series which he shares on his Instagram account. "I get a lot of submissions from my followers. Usually from people wishing to be anonymous because they are taking a picture of their neighbor's house and they don't want to be found out."
The restoration specialist thinks there are so many of these fails because there's a huge misunderstanding about what window shutters are and aren’t. "Most people today think of them as a way to dress up a window like a flower box, and while they do accomplish that, there are very specific sizing and installation positions that people largely have no idea about today," Sidler said. "There are also some architectural styles that work with shutters and some that don’t and knowing when and where they belong makes quite a difference."
"I think it’s fun when people highlight special small details on their home. I don’t know that I have ever considered a dryer vent worthy of something so grand as it’s own trim and shutters, but hey...you do you!"
and why is the left second story window has only one shutter? they did not have enough??
Maybe the shutter from the window top left, fell off, was cut up & re-used. Want not, waste not!!
Exterior window shutters were originally constructed for light control, privacy, security, and protection from the elements, but Sidler highlighted that he thinks it's perfectly fine if a person wants window shutters just because. However, getting them the right size and installing them in the right locations can really make a big difference.
"In architecture, form follows function and if I can teach people about that in a fun way that gets a few laughs and helps people see the value in historical buildings then that’s a win for all of us."
"Happy Shudder Sunday everyone! When you can’t afford four shutters just split the difference, right?"
The middle section couldn't accommodate two shutters, so a compromise was made.
So you get two custom copies made, to fit between the windows, that match the other two. However, it looks like the space is close enough that possibly trimming a sliver off the edges of each would’ve made the standard size ones fit anyway.
Load More Replies...It looks like there's not enough space to hang 2 shutters in the middle.
First window's saying, "If I don't get both shutters, no one gets both shutters!". . .A paneful solution for both parties.
"Happy #ShudderSunday and may the Easter Bunny bring you better gifts than these shutters."
The funny thing is, there are shutters on the side of the garage door, but none on any of the actual windows.
Shutters on the sides, plus an overhang on top. Guess they got the trim stuff out of their system once they were done with the garage, so didn’t feel like putting any on the house.
Load More Replies..."It’s #ShudderSundayagain! This one is personal to me since it’s right around the corner from my house.
I watched a few weeks ago as the owners tore out the original steel casement windows, replaced them with these vinyl monstrosities AND added shutters to “dress it up”. Lesson #1: Don’t replace your original windows. Ever!
Lesson #2: Shutters on corner windows rarely make sense
Lesson #3: Shutters are not two planks of cement board bolted to the cinder block wall."
I would not agree as to never ever replace windows. There are good reasons to do it. You just have to do it right.
Exactly. I have a drafty house full of ancient windows in desperate need of replacing.
Load More Replies...This is actually terrible advice. There's a ton of reasons to replace windows, number one is for energy conservation.
Never may be an overstatement, but rarely do windows need to be replaced. Single-pane wood windows can be just as energy efficient as a double-pane argon-filled window and have 0% chance of turning into ugly fogged-opaque rectangles.
Shutters should serve a purpose, i.e they should shut, to provide protection from the weather and security. Who decided they were for decoration? Hideous.
As an architect, I'd like to agree, but that practice ended decades ago. Virtually all the exterior shutters installed for the last 60 years are simply decorative, and often provide an opportunity to add some color to so much of the bland residential architecture we've produced in this country in that same time period.
Load More Replies...Would you not replace old, ugly aluminum framed windows with dual paned vinyl?
Oh my gosh, replace your original windows if your house needs it. You don't need to sacrifice your comfort or heating/cooling bill so this guy will think your house is cool.
"Double feature for this week’s #ShudderSunday ! If you’re gonna fail then go big or go home and this apartment complex certainly did. Well done boys, well done!"
Shame no one designs shutters for their intended purpose anymore. I wonder if people realize it's to protect the windows when their is a bad strorm or hurricane.
Mainly, the shutters are protecting the house/apartment from the harsh sun during summer days and from losing heat during winter nights. They also help keep the burglars out.
Load More Replies...As for functionality, I doubt most people nowadays want to protect the windows. Their shutters are just stuck on the wall for decoration and not hinged.
"Happy #ShudderSunday ! I may not agree with this one but at least I understand the logic.
“I bought 2 pairs of shutters and each window only fits one shutter because of this weird entryway roofline. Waste not want not, let’s use the shutters by the front door!”
Please think before you shutter people."
It could have been awsome and unique , don't try to turn an ornge into an apple.
While it wouldn't have been quite as bad as this, I've seen a custom made shutter to fit around a decorative beam and sloped eave. Had it been operative, it would have big gaps over the window.
Would look better with no shutters. Is it a "thing" that homes in that area have to be shuttered?
Shutters were the early screen doors..would let the breeze in and block the rays of the sun.
"Ahhhh the rare “under shutter!” So rare in fact that this is one of only 3 examples still in use today! We are all very fortunate to be able to see this stunning example in its native habitat!"
oh, you mean that window with a pillar in front of it? yeah, i bet it feel left out. it doesnt have a shutter on its side or below it.
Load More Replies...They're also trying to get noticed by the blog with the hashtag, #StripperSunday...in all seriousness I have no idea, but I do have SO many questions!
Load More Replies...The amount of stupidity on this house is hard to quantify. The more you look at the angles, window positions, shutters, posts, the more bizarre it becomes.
How did anything on here move beyond a design into an actual build? Someone somewhere went yip, I like it, let's spend a million to make it a reality. Mind blown.
I must admit, those are weird windows! They should just have let well enough alone!
Anyone gonna point out that a pillar is directly in front of the window?
Agree with Troux, what are those poles doing?? But, at least they are consistent with the fails.
"Because #ShudderSunday is so much fun I thought what the heck let’s do another one today to mix it up!
Being from Florida I love a good pair of flip-flops, but they should never be an architectural detail!
On the plus side, they appear to be properly sized for the windows. Looks like a size 52 to me!"
Not every idea is necesseraly a good one but this one is cute.
Oh come on, it's a beach house, worthy of (and completely appropriate for) flip flop shutters.
"Oh #ShudderSunday you never fail to provide me with content! For those wondering, shutters and awnings should be compatible so that shutters could close if wished.
It’s besides the point that these shutters don’t even come close to fitting the windows and they are positioned incorrectly.
Shutter or awning, pick a side because in this case they go together like...cherries and gravy!"
Yes, too much makeup and big giant false eyelashes.
Load More Replies...Do those awnings open and close, because that top right window especially, is letting like no sunlight in. Like the awning is bigger than that top right window altogether! The rest are slightly better, but not by much. And that door, so you have to duck every time you go in and out?! It's just so very peculiar!
It has a small vent window in the middle. The edges are glass bricks, this is most likely a bathroom window.
Load More Replies...As if you've NEVER seen someone's grandpa wearing a belt AND suspenders?
The shutters at the window above the door aren't even the correct size.
"Which came first, the faux shutters or the gutter? In this case I think we can answer that definitively, but I’m surprised the gutter guy didn’t think this was a bad idea"
Gutters shouldn't run toward the house. The drain should be at the front of the porch. So the gutter guy didn't know what he or she was doing.
This one isn't that bad.. I prefer it this way than I think I would without. Make do with what you have some times..
"Say hello to “Mega-Shutter”! When a regular shutter simply won’t do Meg-Shutter can help you intimidate all who cross its path!"
"Always make sure to protect the outer 6” of your garage door with vinyl hurricane Shudders like these for maximum protection in a storm"
Who in their right minds even thinks up the idea of plastering a worthless, decorative shutter by a garage door. Does not compute.
Oh I dunno. Maybe braindead 'Muricans. Sure you have enough of them. We've got your equivalents in my country too... fortunately far smaller ratio... but still.
Load More Replies..."Happy #ShudderSunday and may we all learn the basics of geometry today! An arched shutter when open will have the opposing arch of the window. Think for a moment how well these shutter would fit if you were to close them."
Swing and a miss. They were probably custom fabricated, but made too narrow, too tall, with improper arched tops, and installed backwards.
Ah, come on. NO ONE even thinks of what a "shutter" is anymore. Just decorations.
I'm hoping there's a niche behind them and the outside ones pull out other panels and the arch meets in the middle, locking with an invisible mechanism.
"When you only have room for 1 shutter then you actually have room for NO shutters."
"In this episode of #ShudderSunday it’s another case of things that make you go...hmmm.
They only sell shutters in pairs so you know that extra shutter is hiding somewhere in the basement.
Really though, if both shutters don’t fit, just don’t install them!"
The comedy here is the outermost shutters are hinged - to offer 1/2 the protection!
I know, right! It would actually be okay for operable shutters to overlap between 2 windows.
Load More Replies...He said,"I don't know ,just put it somewhere." And they did.
"There are 2 things this photo makes me want to do...1) Restore those gorgeous windows 2) Tear that awful shutter off the bay window. Glad to know that even seaside Maine has shutter problems!"
Lots of things I wanna do. Destroy the shutters. Destroy the windows. Destroy the siding... oh f**k it... destroy the whole fecking building.
Add to the "honey-do list" scrape and paint the trim and windows, replace the rotten porch, add a railing to the side of the porch, clean the cedar shingles and re-stain, and put a barrier around the under side of the porch to keep critters from living under there. Lots of work to do on this one in addition to the shutters.
A lot more issues here than just shutters. The windows are crowding into the rooflines.
Those windows need to be replaced, not refinished. The cost to refinish these windows correctly, vs. the cost to replace them is quite a lot. My clients that do refinish old things on their home, tend to have a lot of money to spend on frivolous things. Restoring old things in a home takes a lot more time and money if you're doing it right.
"Whyyyyyyyyyyyy??? Normally a garbage can in the way would make the photo unusable, but in this case it actually improves the most horrendous shutter-trocity I have ever seen!
.
“This garage door looks plain. How can we dress it up?”
“Should we paint it? Nah.”
“I know!! Let’s glue some vinyl wings on either side so you won’t notice the ugly garage door anymore and instead will cringe at the power of misappropriated shutters!”"
The garage door should not be the highlighted feature of your home's facade.
I think it makes a nice frame. I love the color. It drags the house from sad cinder block to happy and bright.
"One shutter on each window for the finished project on a whole house remodel? We’re counting on you guys to show us the right things to do!"
I see what they are trying to do; doesn't look too bad. I think if they painted the trim on the windows, they would have had the affect they were looking for.
They do look bad- if they love the cedar shingles up top, incorporating that into the facade somehow could have added architectural interest and made the building a bit more cohesive.
"Clearly the bottom sash is much more valuable than the top sash on these windows. It deserves the extra protection that 1/4” thick vinyl provides!"
Welcome to Doug's Window Saloon were everything is half off.
Is it just me or do these actually look functional? Could have the windows open without bugs coming in maybe?
Maybe wouldn't keep bugs out, but could keep raccoons out/cats in.
Load More Replies...You actually see old traditionnal windows shutters that are half the height of the windows in some place like official buildings in the Netherlands the point been to block the view rom the street but not the sun light
Ok. Guilty. I've done this. Cheap yard sale shutters like these allowed me to open my windows at night without raccoons clinging to (and tearing) my window screens, trying to access whatever wonderland they thought was inside.
Love seeing an explanation. Thanks! There’s always a reason.
Load More Replies..."Somehow I am still amazed at the depravity of humanity when it comes to window shutters. There is so much wrong with this picture I can’t even begin. Happy Shudder Sunday!"
OK, so there are those whose tiny shutters are matched with big windows, and those whose tiny windows are matched with huge shutters. Why can’t we bring those folks together for a good old-fashioned shutter swap?
"3 strikes and you’re out! There are 3 incorrect uses of shutters in as many windows in just this one photo.
I really can’t believe the level of design disdain going on here.
1. Shutter missing on left side of window
2. Shutter on bay window (incorrectly sized at that) with a missing shutter on the other side of the bay!
3 Shutter on the front door. I can’t see the other side of the door so I can’t even be sure that there are two shutters on the door.
I may retire after this one!"
Weird window placement, but it looks like a tract home from post WW2
"This one is tough! A beautiful house with a very nice original steel window and a cute shutter design to boot, but...
You can’t shutter a corner window this way. Where is the shutter for the other side? How would it close over those big hinges? Why is it too narrow? And why is that paint bubbling so much?
All reasons this attempt get a #ShudderSunday honorable mention. Not as bad as it could have been but still no cigar."
You had to do it PINK as well. Congrats genius. You have moved up my list of top 10 people whom I wish to punch in the face.
I lived in a house with "very nice steel windows" that didn't shut quite all the way and let in a refreshing cold wind all winter long.
"This #ShudderSunday is a very rare picture of the childhood home of Tammy Faye Bakker.
Please be mindful of the “weeping shutters” that are maintained by the docents with weekly fresh coats of mascara"
These shutters aren't the worst. They look fine, actually. I think if you pressure wash the house it'd look just fine.
Yeah but then you lose the mascara running effect (google Tammy Faye Bakker and mascara—-you’ll see what I’m talking about).
Load More Replies...If God saw this, we would have another great flood just for the sake of this mascara house. (What is mascara? I don't know.)
"Not sure what is happening with this window grouping in the first place but the shutters are not helping matters."
I tell you, I think this is one of the funniest things on here. By that, I mean the subject matter.
"I finally found a solution to shutters that are too short for their windows!
I’m excited to announce the Over-Under Shutter!!
Purchase any height shutter and simply install our newest shutter over or under the window to make your shutters a perfect fit every time!"
Wow. I was wondering who stole the fronts to my newly installed kitchen cabinets!
That one on the bottom actually looks looks like it was made to fit that spot, size wise.
I think the windows are too short for the shutters. Rip out the windows and then install the ones that fit the shutters. Voila !
These are not meant to be normal shutters, these are meant to be decorative framing to bring detail to the front of what could have been a dull looking house.
"The ”power shutter”! When your windows are a bit small and understated you should upgrade things and go with a power shutter that is twice the size of the window!
Of course these shutters are so powerful that the house can only handle one per window!"
I didn't realize that until you said that! Are people that stupid to do that! WOW
Load More Replies...Reminds me of those giant shoulder pads we all wore in the 80's, these windows are late for their power lunch.
Yeah... where is the door? Do you climb through the shutters?
Load More Replies...Its okay; there is no front door anyway, but a sidewalk going to it if there were one.
"Those pesky power meters! If only they could move this then they could bolt another vinyl shutter to the siding 5 inches too far away from the window, but I guess this will do.
Bonus is it saves money since they used the second shutter on on a corner window across the house!"
Меня больше проводка беспокоит, не замкнет? Wiring bothers me more, will it short-circuit?
As Jesse said this is normal. Under the meter are the phone lines and the cable for the TV.
Load More Replies..."I was so taken in by the horse and buggy detail that I almost didn’t notice these shutters were about 1/8 the size they should be."
Probably found the shutters at a flea market or yard sale, liked them, bought them, and just stuck them on the house. Without having, or choosing, windows they actually would fit on, of course.
I mean, none of these shutters will do their job ever they are accessories. This is kind of that kitsch-y mid century thing. Dated, but never intended for actual protection from weather.
"This may be the greatest collection of shutter mistakes I have ever seen in one picture.
1. Garage shutters: never appropriate
2. The corner bay windows: a little sliver of shutter to show you were purposeful about screwing this up
3. The group of 3 windows up top: sharing is caring and these 3 windows are sharing too few shutters that are too small"
Problem with many new houses like this is that there isn't a ton of effort put into details like window trim. I literally don't know how you would create curb appeal on this one any other way without a major remodel.
I tink all deez be hillbilly shudders... oops I meant shitters ooops I meant... never mind I'll stuff it up agin won' I.
A carpenter who pretends to be an architect. Nobody uses shutters anymore, so they became a decorative element. What is his problem?
Even decorations should make sense. This just looks stupid.
Load More Replies..."Ahhh, “garage sideburns”. These might be bad enough for me to break quarantine just to pull these down in the night so I can sleep better!"
"Hanging shutters on houses with horizontal siding is like writing on wide ruled paper. If my 4 year old can stay between the lines shouldn’t your shutter installer be able to as well?"
One is upside down. I understand how it happened, but I don't understand how it got left that way.
No, the thick edge on both is on the bottom. They were just hung at different heights. If closed, wouldn't even cover one half of one window, let alone both.
Load More Replies..."It’s not just the improper size that bugs me for #ShudderSunday sometimes it’s the old “bloody shutter syndrome” that ruins their look"
"Don’t forget to shut those 2nd story shutters for maximum protection!"
"PSA: Please be careful when washing vinyl shutters. They have a tendency to shrink."
"The elusive “sideburn” shutters! Not often found this far north this unique style is rarely captured in its natural habitat"
The tiny windows remind me of the nail on some people's baby toe. The shutters don't help.
"This picture is a great teaching moment! 1) Don’t replace your original windows. They will last infinitely longer than replacement units and with weatherstripping and storms can actually be made more efficient than many new windows. 2) Shutter size should be the same as the window and exactly half the width otherwise they shouldn’t be installed."
It looks like they cut off the top part of the on e on the left, and stuck it above the one on the right. LOL
These are NOT meant to be shutters! They are just decorative pieces to bring interest to a boring side of the building.
Nice way to ruin a beautiful house. Maybe next time buy a tape measure first.
buy a tape measure first. and grow some taste. this one is ugly, ugly, ugly.
Load More Replies...Plus two windows have shutters that entebd below the windows' lower edge. And they're all short on top!
Shutters are supposed to close over the window. Image if you flipped these and how they would look on the window? the shutters are flipped over.
Load More Replies...If they CAN actually close and the wind gets strong those handles are going to take out a window.
I think the handles would hit the window edge in the middle, However, each would only cover half the width and none of the arch.
Load More Replies...I don't care where you put them ,just not on the ground or floor.
"The “Skinny Girl” brand just released their new line of shutters and Bethenny Frankel is donating 100 pairs of shutters to homeowners in need. Visit her page to get your pair today!"
"I’m going to ignore the fact that these are fake vinyl shutters installed atop vinyl siding and go straight for the lack of completing the job at hand.
.
You were already on the ladder screwing these babies into the wall! Could you not afford another $40 for the other pair of fake shutters??
.
They look like fake eyelashes installed sideways"
(that front door! so, you can just stand there in the rain at your *rusty* door trying to get the key in the lock?)
Must have been a 4 for 1 special. That sure is a lot of shutters. You can teach math class using that building...If Jimmy buys 15 shutters and sells 8 how many shutters does Jimmy have left?
What kind of building has rooms this big? Or rooms this small?
Load More Replies...Not unpleasant with the roofline and the coziness of the home. I mean we've established that they aren't protecting anyone from a hurricane or cyclone.
If it was possible to close them, they'd each protect about four inches of the pane.
Maybe, the house to the right, even though their shutters are probably ineffective, just wanted to shut out the ugliness of the neighbours house
When I said,"Put the shutter up." I meant for you to put it away.
Hi Elaine, Are you just a little bit obsessed/upset/interested in/about shutters? Just asking for a friend?
Load More Replies...Will add these as highlights just in case you can't see this uglly area.
Ya THINK!?!?!? Calm down bro, they are decorative (in some decade or the other)
It may be loose - but I think you meant lose the shutter.
Load More Replies...Draw a picture of your plans because it's esier to errase than to take them all down.
Why is he bothered that they are fake? I mean, really? It's a look some people like
Do you think any of the other shutters are real? They are all for show.
But, oddly enough, it's the only shutter on this post that would actually protect a window (because it's the right size).
Load More Replies...Fake shutters just don't look good. Many countries still use real shutters and they look great, and functional. On another note, I can only read "FAIL" so many times... we get it.
On most US houses (and most pictured in this thread), shutters are purely decorative. It's basically just a fixed piece of wood trim that's mimicking an old functional design - and they don't look functional. So with that in mind, it's not really incorrect to place pieces of trim wherever you like them.
Old design ? It's largely used all over the world. Never been obsolete at all.
Load More Replies...Great... Now I'll be looking at people's shutters for the rest of the week.
I think Scott should leave other peoples houses alone. Not everybody has the same taste.
Yes, there were some functional fails. But many pics showed attempts, misguided or not, using yard sale "finds" or not, to improve the appearance of the facade. I found the tone of this post to be a bit too elitist and snide. These are people's homes. Let's step back and let Karen and the Head of the Neighborhood Association do their jobs.
I'm assuming the fake shutters is used as a design to make things look a bit better instead of plain even tho it doesn't logically make sense but physically look ok
