Here’s How People Reacted To Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock During The Live Oscars Broadcast (40 Posts)
"CODA" has won best picture at the 94th Academy Awards but it's not what people are talking about after the ceremony.
The center of attention is the physical altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock that took place after the comedian made a joke about Will's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
When the actor returned to his seat, he threw a tirade of f words at Rock who was visibly stunned by the exchange, but managed to keep it professional and continued on with his presentation.
The incident baffled the audience and viewers alike, and many are trying to figure out if it was part of the show or not.

Yes! Respect to this husband! The world is cruel, but we can't go smacking anyone who offends us
Yeah but Chris Rock should not have made fun of someone with a medical condition
Load More Replies...I'm guessing after Will laughed, he looked at his wife who was visibly offended by Chris's remark. Did you watch her face?
Chris made a joke about his wife Jada. She has alopecia. Chris made a joke about seeing her soon in the sequel to the movie "G.I. Jane"...where the protagonist famously has a shaved, bald head. She did not laugh. Will seemed to at first, but then just strode up on stage, smacked the taste out his mouth, walked back to his seat and shouted at Chris "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth!" Twice. And Chris stood there gobsmacked trying to play it off the best he could. So...yeah. That happened.
Load More Replies...Personally I really like Will Smith as an actor and musician. I believe that he did what was just, righteous and fair. Mr. Rock insulted his wife Jada and Will defended her HONOR by letting Chris Rock know in no uncertain terms that his disrespect of his wife was not only against her but him also. He is the head of his own household (Under GOD) and he stood up for his and his wifes HONOR! Yes he smacked Chris Rock upside the head but Mr. Rock is very lucky that Will didn't beat the living s**t out of him! I would have snickered in shock and dismay also. Then after putting Chris Rock in his place he also let him know that he would never, ever tolerate Mr. Rock even speaking HIS WIFE'S NAME AGAIN, EVER! How awesome! Good onya Will! This world needs more MEN like him! Men who are willing out of their love, to defend their own and their loved one's honor and respect! God bless ya Will and Jada!
So you condone violence. Got it. Personally, if my husband would pull a stunt like that, he would sleep on the couch for at least three months for the slap alone. Probably longer if he talked stupid sh*t like defending my honor, like I am some possession of his, uncapable of defending myself against a joke.
Load More Replies...Legitimate question: I'm seeing comments about someone not being able to define a "woman," but what's the legal jurisdiction where a "woman" is treated any differently from a "person" where the question would even be relevant?
I just have a feeling something else’ was going on with him, he’s definitely not known for lashing out. But also it’s soooo 1997 to make a joke about Jadas bald look.
It's not the first time Chris Rock made a joke about it. I think Will's reservoir of patience is finally depleting.
Load More Replies...Will should have been escorted out of the academy awards. I have no respect for him and the academy awards.. they are ok with violence.. this is what Ukraine and Russia is all about .. turn to violence vs communication. Was it ok because he was black?? Is it ok because Russia has nuclear weapons.. this is a correlation.. Will and Russia are the sane.. they have no respect fir humanity.. I feel for Ukraine and Chris.. put and will are jerks..
Personally I really like Will Smith as an actor and I believe that even though he might have chuckled (Most likely due to shock and disrespect of himself and his wife), he did the right thing. Chris Rock had no right to insult Mrs Smith and Will defended his and her honor by putting Chris Rock in his place. Good on him! The fack that he then informed Chris Rock to keep his wife's name out of his f#*king mouth was also the proper response to let Mr. Rock know in no uncertain terms that he had utterly, completely disrespected both of them in a most vile and utterly comtempable way and that was completely unacceptable. The use of the F word was mearly another way of letting him know that Mr. Rock had better never, EVER cross that line again.Chris Rock is lucky that Mr. Smith didn't unleash his full and justified rage at Mr. Rocks scornful, comtempable and massively disrespectful words and behavior. You are F...ing AWESOME WILL SMITH! GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR HONOR!
Yeah, every time I see something posted by him I automatically upvote.
Load More Replies...Yes, AND… standing up on a stage and making fun of someone with an autoimmune disease isn’t a good example for children either…
There is not liking a joke and saying that, and then there is physical assault and screaming obscenities. Sure that joke wasn't in very good taste. But funny enough as long as Chris Rock made jokes about other celebrities, Smith was laughing along very loudly. He even laughed when Chris Rock first made the joke about Jada. It obviously took Smith a second to realise she didn't appreciate it and then he went nuts. Sorry, but that is hypocrisy.
Load More Replies...That was so inappropriate of Will Smith. I agree that joke was in poor taste, but you don’t go and hit someone, then start yelling “keep my wife’s name out yo fcking mouth”. There was no need for violence here. I hate violence.
Oh serious with the Oscar's. They say the moment you become famous is the moment you stop growing up. The Oscar's responsibility is a load of woke joke in a pin-striped suit. It's so ghastly tiring in the face of real life difficulty. With the offload of the trash that comes out of these people's mouths. I mean who are they and what do they know?
George Takei is a true gem. He sounds like someone who would be a great conversationalist and would make you feel at ease.
Exactly George Takei; Where tf does Chris Rock get off by making personal remarks about other people--it's bullying. When kids see this and trust me, millions did, it tells them that putting people down is OK--it's not. NOT BY ANYONE Jada looked crestfallen, and Will, bless his heart, took action.
Interesting that you interpret his comment as being about Chris Rock. I took it to be referring to Will Smith. And George Takei likely meant it to be directed at both. Rock make a joke in poor taste, he wasn't bullying her. He did not deserve to be publicly assaulted.
Load More Replies...He is lucky he just got slapped and not a full fist.....it was not funny
Do you really think ridiculing a woman because of how she looks is being a good role model? Society has many, many, many cases where people were so verbally abused they committed suicide or developed serious diseases and conditions such as depression , social anxiety, body dismorphic disorder, bulimia, anorexia.
Which means that Chris Rock deserved to be slapped for making fun of a woman's medical condition.
Reportedly, the conflict was not staged nor was it part of the show. It occurred after Rock pointed out Jada Pinkett Smith in the crowd and said, "Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it," referring to her bald head.
At first, Will Smith appeared to be laughing but Jada, who was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and has been vocal about her struggles about not being able to grow her hair, rolled her eyes at the joke and Will then walked up to Rock on stage and smacked him.
Or, that's how you've been conditioned to react when someone is making fun of you in a public setting, no matter if you agree with it or not... but when he saw his wife, his actual feeling came out
Yes, this! He is laughing after the punchline. What changed? Jada looked po'd. Did he suddenly notice she was not amused?
I think so. I guess it quickly went from funny to not-funny when he realized she was really hurt by it. That's the charitable interpretation, at least.
Load More Replies...He deserves to win best performance next year because the switch from laughter to slap mode is wildddddd 👀
I think he did laugh until Jada gave him the eye... Probably felt like he had to stand up for his lady or sleep on the couch
I think he laughed because that’s what you’re conditioned to do in the setting he was in. He then realized how hurt she was, and it angered him to have someone hurt her. I doubt the couch came into the equation.
Load More Replies...People laugh when they're uncomfortable literally all the time. Kind of weird how so many people seem to have forgotten that fact.
Right. I do this all the time. Then it sinks in. "Did they just say what I think they said?" He most likely thought the joke was on him at first.
Load More Replies...I honestly thought it looked like quite an uncomfortable/uneasy laugh... like he was initially 'playing' along with what was being said.
I feel like this was an act. there were definitely cuts. Something's missing.
Oh for christ sake. Grow up and suck it up Will and Jada(who is only famous for being Will's wife.) It was an innocent joke. It's not like he was making fun of her disease, he just likened it to G.I. Jane is all. Quit being so sensitive. You're dealt the hand you're dealt. Get over it and deal with it. And if anyone is thinking "yeah, easy for you to say person with no disability", I have MS and sometimes you have to have a sense of humor.
If you watch the start of the video, initial reaction of Smith was laughing, while his wife was clearly not. Ressorting to violence just after laughing, worse walking quietly to your target and then out of nowhere punching him, is not "the heat of the moment"
This is 2022. As a society, could we please move beyond the "man defends woman's honour" outdated pattern? Jada Pinkett Smith could have defended herself if she'd have felt the need to, through any type of media. Also, this single event changes my opinion of Will Smith quite radically.
People make fun of bald guys all the time. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease which affects both men & women. Let's say a woman made this joke about a man and some guy slapped her on stage. Would it be ok? If your answer is no, then this situation is a no brainer.
It is an alleged autoimmune disease, don‘t make it sound like this was a serious illness.
Load More Replies...Yeah, just because it's 2 men, doesn't make it any more acceptable... Comics known to make fun of everyone and THAT is important. They have to know they won't get hurt no matter what. For. Talking.
'NO 1. in a professional setting like the Oscars'--or anywhere, should B worried, about being PUNCHED OUT!'--you're so right CMDR'--
Load More Replies...'I really have 2 WONDER--if perhaps Chris & Jad(ED) also had a TRYST?'--oh! Jaded prefers==ENTANGLEMENT!" ha ha --'DON"T TRY 2 MAKE--ENTANGLEMENT'--HAPPEN!" he he
WILL...'you --fooked UP!"--and 4 what, you're W(HORROR--of a wife, who really, who cares if she was a bit UP-set?'--that's life!'--and you're rich, and would have been fine!'.--You -messed UP- you're -OSCAR moment'--4 what??????--
Why do you write like this? Is it intentional or is English not your native language? I'm genuinely curious. Are you like 13 and not mature enough to speak in clear, legible sentences?
Load More Replies...If anyone did that in any decent theatre they would be forcefully ejected on to the street. Unless it was staged. The audience numbers have been falling for some time. Surely, Hollywood would not be so cynical. Or would they?
I'm on the other side of this. I think we could turn this into a show. Just have Will Smith running around smacking the s**t out of everyone. Well, everyone except August Alsina. LOL. Him screaming "Keep my wife's name out of your mouth" was hillarious. He can't keep other men out of his wife's mouth, and he expects everyone else to "respect his marriage".
Her intimate life is not our business. Thousands of people betray each other every day, but what society criticizes? Open relationships. lol
Load More Replies...They should have removed Smith from the premises immediately and sent him his god damn Oscar in the mail. The way it played out the audience gave a standing ovation to a man who just commited physical assault.
Humiliating a woman for her appearance is not love, respect or civility either.
I'm waiting to see if there's going to be any consequences for his actions. I mean they still let him accept his award and give a speech. The show must go on after all. Can't disappoint all the rich actors.
About 40 minutes later, Smith won the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in King Richard, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. He referenced the moment while accepting it.
"Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family," Smith said.
"I've been called on in my life to love people and to protect people, and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. And have people talk crazy about you. People disrespect you and smile like it's OK."
Security should have been called to escort him out. They would have in a less privileged environment.
Whatever the Academy says, they were thrilled about what happened. No way they were going to end this by throwing Will Smith out - think of the ratings! My predication - Will Smith and Chris Rock as co hosts next year.
Load More Replies...Don't forget, this occurred BEFORE he won his Oscar. Dude should have been escorted out and he should not have been able to give an acceptance speech.
Would Will Smith do the same if it was Ricky Gervais?!? Will Smith is a bully! Used to love him, now I hope he'll get cancelled
Would CR do the same it is was Ricky Gervais?!
Load More Replies...Unless Chris rock says he was assaulted, they can't do s**t about it. Can't prove it wasn't a skit between the 2
Yea and if it was a skit why would somebody make a joke about someone's desise
Load More Replies...I have a feeling that this could be staged too.... Oscars go from bad to worse every year and they are really trying to make them more interesting... Very bad way though but I'm thinking is it possible that noone knew what Rock would say?? I don't believe that! Speeches are written and clocked and i don't believe that anyone that read that thought it's okay to be said unless it was indeed staged!
If you’re at the top, you can get away with practically anything. Just ask Trump.
t was a set up by both of them. Rock knows what is going to happen, he has his hands behind his back and leans forward to cop the open handed (pulled) slap. The Oscars were tanking for ratings, this got 50% more viewers. We all miss Ricky Gervais he's the best.
I didn't hear a smack tho. It sounded like he hit the microphone.
It looked like Chris reacted and partially moved out of the way so the slap didn't land completely.
Load More Replies...“Social media made you all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.” He shouldn't this, he shouldn't that. Bla bla bla... Call it toxic or whatever you want. Sometimes a man got to do, what he has to do. You just don't make a joke about a wife and disrespect her in front of a man and an audience. If you do, you have to live with the consequences
'Faith...'I bet you're a really FUN gal ain't ya!?'--NOT!'--at least that's what you're husband said!' ha ha
Load More Replies...I don't know why you got down voted, but I fixed it for ya. I agree as well
Load More Replies...Personally i think reacting in anger to jokes like this is perfectly reasonable. Reacting with violence however, is not.
Absolutely! Being angry is absolutely fine. Maybe even calling "Not cool! Seriously not cool!!" would have been totally ok. But physical violence and screamed profanities? Hell nah!
Load More Replies...Who thinks he deserved this? No one deserves to be slapped in the face.
I can give a list of politicians that would prove otherwise. 😂
Load More Replies...Maybe that was not appropriate, either ? But than there's still the difference between attacking a group of people, people who can support each other And attacking a single individual
Wth? People are not insects, we don't have a hive mind. If you hear something like that and are personally affected by it, you don't think "ah but it's not so bad, others feel just as insulted as I do"??!
Load More Replies...I choose free speach, for comedians too. Or especially for them, as sometimes truth is only bearable in a form of a joke. Like when my mum had cancer, got bold, like really bold, not like Jada buzz cut haircut bold. She is pretty with it, she rocks (sorry) that haircut for 30 years now on -off, just like her daughter and her hubby. Not by the way she went public with her alopecia, and she said straight "I can only laugh about it". So why is your hubby slapping dudes half his size now, under the name to protect you. One messed up family, strange things going on between them and behind the scene
Free speech is different from being free to insult. Also, with freedom of speech comes consequences. Speak responsibly.
Load More Replies...I think people shouldn't be applauded for making jokes about any minority group they don't belong to
1) It’s not like she’s bald from CANCER. “Medical condition”? Puhleeze. 2)GI Jane is a compliment. 3) The Smiths have enough money to buy a small country, thanks to the industry that they have no business thriving in.
Oh, so if it's not cancer it doesn't impact her life, health and mind? So it's ok to mock her? Give me a break!
Load More Replies...Funny no one slapped Ricky Gervais every time he hosted an awards show. He is famous for hilariously/viciously attacking celebrities.
He got lucky. Questioning verbal abuse is a relatively new phenomenon. I guess people is getting very tired of pretending they found that cruel joke funny.
Load More Replies...The guy who makes a joke on somebody's illness is not a comedian but an insensitive jerk.
This. Be it a bad joke or not, you don't attack a comedian while they are preforming.
For everbody complaining "Chris Rock shouldn't have joked about an illness" are forgetting that stand up comedians have joked about Obesity (when it is diagnosed as a disease), mental illness, cancer, disablities and many more. Having said that, Rock shouldn't have told that joke but that doesn't mean Will Smith gets to smack him.
Yes comedians make jokes about medical conditions, but they don't usually direct it a someone literally sat in the front row of the audience...
Load More Replies...You can pretty much do anything you want and get away with it if you got Will Smith money.
There will be consequences. His reputation took a big hit. But no lasting consequences, or the criminal record it would get almost anyone else.
Letting a jerk verbally abuse people sends to the world that making cruel comments is ok. The academy shouldn't allow such type of "comedy" in first place, than the whole thing wouldn't have happened.
But what? He is not part of a team. I think it's getting way too much air time. In some ways I'm surprised that this is the first time someone has slapped a comedian. It is was a "joke" like many comedians do but do they have to be at someone's expense?
I think the whole culture of award show hosts is vile and toxic. They are paid to stand up there and roast unsuspecting celebrities…
"Unsuspecting"?? Really?? If you attend the show you know the host is going to offend some people. 2 years ago Ricky Gervais called half of Hollywood pedophiles at the Golden Globes and everyone applauded him for it. What's the difference.
Load More Replies..."Love will make you do crazy things" is what an abuser tells the partner they just beat the s**t out of to justify their behaviour like they did so because they love them so much.
"love makes you do crazy things" is for grand displays of affection. Like super intricate proposals and big surprise parties. Just like "kids will be kids" should only be used to point out that kids are going to fall and get hurt and roll around in the grass and come home from school with mystery stains.
Good thing Ricky Gervais wasn’t the host. The Smiths would have been eviscerated. And I bet Ricky wouldn’t have hesitated pressing charges for assault.
"I wanna apologize to the academy, I wanna apologize to all my fellow nominees," Smith said with tears in his eyes during his Oscar speech.
He did not, however, mention Rock's name in his apology.
"Tasteless joke" You can condemn Will Smith's actions without downplaying how inappropriate and cruel the joke was.
"We're excited for GI Jane 2" - that's the "so very cruel" joke. Go cry over it.
Load More Replies...Tasteless joke ... He was insulting his wife ! Instantly resorting to violence like this was immature and a bad example He should have handled that better But Chris Rock insulting someone like this, making fun of something they can't control is even less mature Will Smith is behaving like a teenager who hasn't his hormones under control Chris Rock is like that kid in elementary school being mean to some people just because he wants attention
Jeez, good job Chris didn't do any jokes about her sleeping with other guys.
Her hair loss isn't a choice, sleeping with others would be.
Load More Replies...So, did anyone hear Chris Rock apologize to Jada Pinkett Smith for his cruel joke about the results of her autoimmune disease? I didn't.
Let’s see if someone jokes about me being bald I can kick the s out of them?
do you have alopecia? even then you shouldn't beat someone up, this is not what the post is condoning but that was wills motives
Load More Replies...t was a set up by both of them. Rock knows what is going to happen, he has his hands behind his back and leans forward to cop the open handed (pulled) slap. The Oscars were tanking for ratings, this got 50% more viewers. We all miss Ricky Gervais he's the best.
Ut was not a joke. It's mocking. Verbal abuse. Which people seem a lot more ok with than a slap 😒
Wow, forensics would have a field day if the assault was contested...I mean it's obvious Chris R has fresh prints all over his face...
I mean, Harvey Weinstien (i honestly don't care how his name is spelt) used to sit and get thanked constantly while being an absolute scum of a human....so not so strange from Hollywood's elitist.
Well Congratulations Will Smith! You've been in Hollywood long enough to become an old white dude.
Load More Replies...Let me get this right. I’m allowed to kick the s out of someone who mentions my baldness
Actually with what he did the reaction is worse about him than Chris Rock! This is what he succeeded! Everyone to attack him now! If it was me i would just tell him "you think it's funny to make jokes about health problems?" And I would sit back to see what he would answer
He shifted the attention and made Rock a kind of martyr, he also didn't support his wife in defending herself.
Load More Replies...Well you should care. Because if that poor excuse of a comedian respected people, the slap would never have happened. You can criticize physical aggression without condoning psychological abuse.
All these people say Smith should face consequences. But what about the guy who made such a cruel joke in the first place? What consequence will he get?
Facts. Though...I am surprised the academy hasn't taken back his Oscar.
If people start boycotting their shows movies however then they're going to lose a paycheck.
People won’t stop watching his movies. People have no taste.
Load More Replies...No that's about right. "Comedians" talk trash about people, bully and humiliate others freely, no consequences for them. Sad.
Will Smith’s behavior exemplified his beginnings. He needs to go inter Anger therapy. This is 2022. He owes Chris a personal apology as well. He behaved as if he was raised in the backwoods.
Everybody is zen when it's someone else being teased and mocked repeatedly.
Load More Replies..."Love everyone." "What about the gays? "Or the Jews?" "Did I stutter?"
Load More Replies...He turned over tables of people cheating the poor. He didn't slap anyone.
Load More Replies...The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that they are aware of the incident and that Rock had declined to file a police report.
"If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report," the police explained.
Don't make jokes about it or Will Smith might take offense and hit you
And Chris rock owes Jada an apology for making fun of her sickness. That's why Chris isn't filling any charges, he knows he f****d up
I'm glad the justice system doesn't work like the US one here in the UK. Here, it's not the victim's decision whether charges get pressed or not - the police hand their evidence over to the Crown Protection Service and they decide whether they have a case to bring or not. We all saw the offence being committed with our own eyes, why should someone get away with that?
Load More Replies...Chris Rock owes Jada an apology too. Everyone who laughed at her illness being a punchline owes her one
Nobody is right here. And Rock doesn't deserve an apology either. Both assholes
Maybe Chris rock isn't filing a report because he recognised what a jackass he was ? Talking about Will Smith having to apologize to Chris Rock What about Chris Rock apologizing to Jada Smith ?
So every comedian ever who has been insulting should apologize? That's a very sad day for comedy.
Load More Replies...Jada put her condition out there, just like she did her 'entanglement'. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Will had NO RIGHT to SLAP Mr. Rock, it's fine for will voice his displeasure but not okay to be violent. will smith is now relegated to tom cruise in my book, I will no longer pay to watch his movies. I've lost so much respect for him and jada is just trash. She still has not supported her husband but posted some BS about healing. Everybody just stop. If jada was so touchy about her alopecia she should have worn a head wrap or a wig. Get over it already. No, will should not be deprived of his stupid statute, but just like that slap was public, his apology to Chris Rock should also be public. Will needs to go find that little boy jada had the entanglement with and slap him ... oh but he won't do that because he'll get his butt righteously kicked. They both need to go home and stay there for a while. This is jada's fault. She's emasculated will.
She has all the right to be open about her struggles and be respected at the same time. "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" suits Chris Rock perfectly. He shouldn't play with others feelings.
Load More Replies...All right, Will Smith should have left the room right away, not celebrate himself. But why doesn’t anyone mention how colossal a*****e Chris Rock was and what pain he caused to Jada and Will Smith, all their relatives and friends who are worried about Jada’s health?
A lot of people are mentioning it and a lot of people think Will's ANGER was totally justified. His VIOLENCE however, was not.
Load More Replies...Yes, everybody on the internet is superior, zen, spiritual and brave too, why Rob Reiner would be different?
Load More Replies...Chris Rock owes Jada an apology, or better yet, many apologies because he has making fun of her for a long time now. There is no excuse for verbal abuse. The excuses you and others are making for CR behavior are no better.
This! Just because people laughed doesn't make his "joke" okay. I really don't like this tradition of making fun of people this way because there are so many lines getting crossed and people don't really have a choice but to play along. That is just wrong.
Load More Replies...They were both wrong. Insensitive joke that took it a bit too far and assault in that situation isn't justified. There were other means to make a point and "hit" back.
I'll give you a --clue--why Alanna?'--cuz she's a dumb--cun ty whore, who thinks SHE"S ABOVE IT ALL'--Like YOU!"--
Load More Replies...In Smiths defense; it's not impossible to first laugh at a joke and then later realize the insensitivity of the joke. His initial reaction could've been out of shock, not amusement.
Yes Susie, when some 1. HITS or SLAPS'--you're kid 4 joking around, YOU remember that!!!!!!'--TRUTH
Load More Replies...The fact that a room full of professional actors laughed doesn't make a cruel, inconsiderate joke funny, doesn't justify physical violence either.
Cant imagine how his wife felt when the whole room laughed at her. Pretty sad.
This is an erudite woman who has strong opinions and voices them.. Why on earth does she need a man to champion her and attack someone to defend her honour? Mrs.Smith has never been shy of letting the world know all about her life and her foibles and her illness. It was a disgraceful show of machismo and so last century.Pathetic!
Load More Replies...Just because people laughed doesn't make it okay. Making jokes specifically to target one specific person's illness / insecurity and getting the entire damn room to laugh along with you? That's just getting everyone in the room to go along with your bullying.
Everybody laughing at a comment that belittles another human being doesn't make it right. On the contrary, it only shows how we need to talk about verbal abuse and the so many ways it is disguised as humor in order to benefit a bunch of sadists.
If the whole room really laughed at such a stupid joke they either 1 Are fake and are used to laugh at every bad joke just to be "polite" with the idiot, ops, I mean, the comedian. 2 They are sadists and need to see someone being humiliated to get a high.
We need a discourse on what is appropriate in comedy jokes. Rock has been going after her and all the Smiths incessantly. Making fun of Shumer for stealing jokes is edgy comedy. Making fun of an auto-immune disease or any body/health issue may eventually require a slap upside the head. Especially when more appropriate requests to stop have fallen on deaf ears. Will shouldn’t have done it to us viewers and the Oscars, but probably should have given the weasel a wake up call earlier on his harassment campaign. And what happened to CR? He used to be funny on his early stand up days. Now he’s a commercial actor or product shucker & tells weak sauce jokes. He’s worse than the comedians booked to perform on Disney cruises.
Someone "may eventually require a slap upside the head" for telling a joke at an event he was hired to tell jokes at? No, he would not eventually deserve to be hit. Deserved a telling off, a public statement, discussion so that people could listen and learn? Yes, 100%.
Load More Replies...I don't keep up with what the celebrities are doing so I thought Jada was bald because she chose to be. The alopecia changes things. I didn't think the joke was bad until I saw this post.
Exactly, I never knew so how was Rock supposed to know? She has always had short hair, just thought that was her style.
Load More Replies...The comment was disgusting especially when it's very well known she has alopecia and she is always very sentimental about her disease! It's not that she is laughing with that too but even then it's never okay to make jokes about a health problem
How many men have been mocked bc of their baldness in the history of the show business?
While I do agree that Chris could have picked a less sensitive subject, a lot of patients use humor to laugh about what they don't have control over
So what. A lot of patients don't use humor to laugh about what they don't have control over. If she wanted to joke about her illness she could make it without him. Your comment makes no sense.
Load More Replies...He wasnt. Even if he was, you don't joke over others appearance.
Load More Replies...“Disease”? Lady, CANCER is a disease. That Karen simply has hair loss.

So Will and Chris embarrassed themselves to save the Oscars?? Lmao Did you pull that one out your ass?
Load More Replies...Did he know? Probably not. Let's hope not. Otherwise it WAS planned! Great actors going to act to get viral and interest in Jadas' talkshow!
As we say, you can laugh of everything but not with everyone. Choose your audience ! I can make dark humor jokes, but I know who it will make laugh and I do not that in front of people it may hurt. This is not a joke in a journal that you choose or not to buy. It was imposed on Will Smith and his wife. I would probably have done the same.
But even if you choose to buy, you buy the journal and find out later what was written. You will have to read problematic jokes anyway.
Load More Replies...Later, Smith said actor Denzel Washington pulled him aside after the incident, telling him, "At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you."
Meanwhile, Smith's son Jaden tweeted, "And That's How We Do It."
I mean, this horrible event did show the world that Nicole Kidman’s face can move.
Just an FYI, this pic was taken at the beginning of the telecast, not after the slap heard ‘round the world.
That wasn't a punch, his hand was more open than Will Smith's marriage.
It was made clear that this is not what Nicole was reacting to. In fact she had just seen her friend Jessica Chastain walk in and promptly waved her arms above her head to get Jessica's attention.
this is not a reaction to the slap --credible news outlets reported that she was reacting to greeting Jessica Chastain.

She's way too skinny now a days. She looked better in her younger years when she had more weight on her.
Yet he was allowed to go back to his seat, and when he got up a bit later to go up and get his Oscar, everyone applauded as if he was a wonderful Human while he cried and ran the gamut of pretty creepy, over the top emotions. While they all clapped. Hollywood is sick
you could tell the moment where they were like "wait... this isn't a joke?"
Now we need a meme to show how everybody got shocked with Cris Rock cruel joke.

I don't think anyone is really thinking that Will smacking Chris was "proof of love". To me it was proof of "I'm sick of your s**t, and that stupid smile you wear as you stand of stage and talk smack about a disease that forces someone I love to stand in front of the mirror and doubt herself every single day and you are messing up the years of work I've put into helping her see her beauty, you a*****e." I don't think what happened has anything to do with "domestic violence", it was simply violence, nothing domestic about it. I don't even think Smith thought about his wife when he smacked Rock, just the years of work put into her disease not being a target for bullies.
A slap was commonplace for being disrespected. Honor old school. What's next? Spanking is wrong? Lol.
Aw please, knock it off. That level of trolling is far too low.

This makes me so sick. Everyone blamed Trump for the decline of social grace. I always said he gave people with bad manners permission to act out. Realllllly people...Howwww is this ok???
Ridiculing another human being is bad manners too.
Load More Replies...It was a set up by both of them. Rock knows what is going to happen, he has his hands behind his back and leans forward to cop the open handed (pulled) slap. The Oscars were tanking for ratings, this got 50% more viewers. We all miss Ricky Gervais he's the best.
I can see his entire life, career flashing before his eyes in this meme
That’s the real danger. This society is getting more insane by the day.
wouldn't take any kind of advice from someone who thinks it's ok to carry around a severed head of a president. I'd love to see her reaction to someone carrying around a severed head that looked like her.....I'm certain she'd cry outrageously about the "threat".
That right Kathy, no more disparaging jokes about your wife! But then you could slap yourself, genius!
I know that the votes were already there but he shouldn't be awarded yesterday! They should give it to the second runner up! We shouldn't approve those behaviours and the production of the awards should have better reflexes in these situations
I think they should have definitely kept him off stage at least.

"Love will make you do crazy things" is what an abuser tells the partner they just beat the s**t out of to justify their behaviour like they did so because they love them so much.
Wait alopecia is limited to black women? You learn something new every day. /s
People from any race can develop alopecia. However, traction alopecia, a type of hair loss, is especially common among black women. According to dermatologist Crystal Aguh, who specializes in hair loss, nearly 50% of black women experience some form of hair loss. Took me a second to look that up, hope you learned something new.
Load More Replies...Totally toxic! And from the dude who kinda puts himself out there as working towards enlightenment. Two steps forward, 3 slaps back.
Why is alopecia only a painful experience for black women? Is it more common among black women? I know 2 white women suffering from this. I would have though that if anything, this is less of a big deal among black women since wigs seem to be widely accepted among them even when they have their hair.
Not only black women, lots of white women lose their hair as well. Jada went public , making her own decision to do so. I think she could have handled the matter with a bit more class.
Jada did nothing wrong? She has the right to feel hurt or angry just the same as we all have the right to feel our emotions. She did not cause a scene or use any violence?
Load More Replies...I have heard jokes about the holocaust, race, sex and child abuse but apparently alopecia is the hill to die on...
This only shows how we need to rethink jokes and humor.
Load More Replies...Jada can protect herself. She doesn't need a man to do that for her. She's a strong woman. She has a platform. Will is not stronger than her.
Maybe she can't. How do you know what a person can or cannot do?

I agree, who the hell cares? All of these people need a good smack upside the face. Heck, allot of peoples don’t even have basic cable anymore because they can’t afford it. My kids don’t even know who will smith and Chris rock even are. Lol
A-freaking-men. I don't even watch award shows anymore cuz they're boring af.

CR made it kinda weird, but you my good sir, TOOK it over the top!! Always thought of Will Smith as a classy gentleman, too old to be acting all ghetto.
Ah yes, for his hilariously grotesque speech about how he is the "embodiment of love" after physically assaulting a man on live broadcast. He turned all this into a farce and took away all credibility not only from himself, but also from Jada, because what could she possibly say to this after THAT display?
He also ruined the night for Will Packer. When do you think there will be another black producer for the Oscars ... after this, probably NEVER. Will is a jerk and jada is his enabler, up there looking like she stole that dress from Scarlett O'Hara ... gurl take those drapes back to Tara!
After all she went through, she is his enabler? Pfft, lol. She is not responsible for his actions, he is a grown up!

Rock handled it with class. Total professional. Even got a nervous laugh out of it. F-you will.
I think he handled it pretty freaking well. Besides not apologizing to Jada for being out of line...
My best friend and I joked about her hair loss during cancer treatment all the time, followed by joking about loss of her b**bs. Chris meant no harm. GI Jane was not an insult, just an observation. Jada and Will both lack a sense of humor and grace. Sad.

I think he was just slow realizing that it wasn't a joke, but an insult. It can take a while for it to sink in that people are making fun.
Load More Replies...Am I the only one who felt there was more behind that slap/punch? It seemed like Will was projecting built up anger onto Chris Rock. Sure Chris was out of line but it seemed like there was more behind the assault. Yes, he did initially laugh.
Yes, the slow stalk towards the stage was very deliberate and his body language didn't immediately telegraph what he was about to do. He wanted to catch Chris Rock unawares, this was not "heat of the moment".

He's shouting about keeping things out of mouths, ironic really considering all sorts of things have been in Jada's mouth which I think maybe why he reacted the way he did. Being a cuckold seems to have affected him

No security?!? And there is 5 sec delay on the broadcast exactly for cases like this. It can be cut off before it goes on air.
Initial reaction: scripted. After watching "international" version several times? Scripted. Open palm face slap a proven stage technique.
No. The police do not involve themselves in "scripted" anything. They have put out statements and the Academy is reviewing whether they are going to strip him of the Oscar. Things DO sometimes actually happen in life, ya know.

Have to say, this was my first thought when I saw the still photograph, 'So it really does look like that at some point in a slap'.
Will, this isn't what they meant for you to do when they titled it, "Everyone Hates Chris."

Oh I guess will smith just TRIES to play good guys in the movies. Stop with your fake tears you jerk. Seriously on TV, in front of an audience?!? Not a good role model at all. Violence not the answer, what are we supposed to tell kids when they are being teased at school?!?

Such bias reporting, not showing one of the thousands of tweets support Will, if you are going to report, be unbiased and report ALL the story.
Condoning violence is not an opinion that needs to be shared.
Load More Replies...Staged to boost the Oscar's abysmal ratings. Professional actors, people payed millions of dollars to make fake drama for ratings and make it look real and they were both laughing at the very same joke right before this happened. Not to mention these are the type of jokes to be expected. I don't care how real it looks, they payed for a living to make fake look real and they're some of the best in the business. No way this was real, I don't buy it.
There are clearly motives for both staged and not staged: (1) increased ratings or (2) anger in response to joke at wife's expense from person with history of bad blood with the assailant and assailant's wife. A lot of people love the conspiratorial possibilities but all motives should be remembered since often the simpler reason, the one that requires fewer people to keep secrets, is the likelier reason. Not saying that's what happened here since we don't know at this point.
Load More Replies...It wasn't a joke. It was an assault on a person about her physical condition that's caused by a serious illness.
Nah please it's a totally harmless illness that only affects her self-esteem... Nothing serious here. Moreover she only loss a little line of hair before deciding to shave her head... Qualifying a joke like this as an assault is discrediting people that suffer real assaults.
Load More Replies...This was a genuine laugh. His eye and cheek muscles were engaged while smiling, indicating that he was truly smiling. An insincere laugh would be only a smile, possibly a wrinkled forehead, no laugh lines around eyes. Clearly it was funny until he was put on notice that it wasn't, when he turned to Jada and saw her shaking her head.
He didn't run anywhere. Was she fast forwarding the video. I've heard endless stories about her show, Red Table Talk, but I haven't heard anything about her alopecia before now. It's entirely possible that Chris Rock hadn't either, if he doesn't watch her show or read/listen to the type of news that would report on something like that. And yes, he was laughing and clapping, because he thought it was funny, until he was made aware by the shaking of his wife's head, that she didn't agree. His behavior was appalling and despicable, he should have been made to leave. Instead he's given airtime to preach about being a vessel for love. Love doesn't reside in any of that hypocritical behavior. He comes off looking like a punk âss bîtch, slapping someone and then yelling and cussing them across the room at a awards show that was full of what was supposed to be his peers. Now they are people who are worried for their safety being anywhere near him. Once you put that ugly out there, you it back
If only we could get more people to tune into the oscars...but how? SCRIPTED. WAKE UP PEOPLE. HES AN ACTOR
Motive isn't proof though. No one will be surprised if that turns out to be the case, but in the meantime it nevers helps to jump to conclusions.
Load More Replies...He should have apologized to Chris as well. What he did was uncalled for and unprofessional. I lost a lot of respect for Will tonight
I never liked Chris Rock. He makes his money off of insulting other people and has stepped over the line more than a couple of times. This time he got slapped in his mouth for taking it too far. Maybe the sting of it will make him think twice before doing it again. Making fun of someone's medical condition is never ok. Did Will Smith over react, sure. But I'm not going to fault a man for defending his wife against a bully.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry, but saying "I did this out of love" is an excuse I've heard of any violent abuser I've come across.
If love moves you to smack someone across the face after a joke, no matter how insensitive, you need therapy.
Love doesn't make you do crazy (violent) things...your ego, temper, immaturity and/or selfishness do though
Wondering just how much worse it would have been if this were two women? Doubt many people would have been condoning it as much as they are bc these are two men....being a man doesn't give you a right to be violent to anyone. He could have made Chris rock look more like an ass if he would have just waited til his speech and used that to humiliate him not physically. Also I feel they all probably staged this. Not many ppl watch anymore. Really feel it was a ratings thing and people should be pointing the finger at the academy as well. Either way, my sons will know that this is not a true "man"
You can take the boy out of the ‘hood, but you can’t take the ‘hood out of the boy.
They need to bring Ricky Gervais back and put all these egotistical people back in their place... That's all I'm saying.. Ha, ha, ha....
I don't know why, but I feel like he would never have walked up and slapped Gervais for saying the same. Such crap behaviour on Smith's part. People joke about bald men all the time and no one cares. Jada has embraced it and looks great, so I don't see joking about GI Jane, either with her or a woman who shaves her head is an issue. Perhaps there's actually some other history between these two men that we don't know about.

Not condoning what WS did at all but all these celebrities condemning Smith while playing silent to the likes of Woody Allan and Roman Polanski (not to mention their silence over Adrian Brody who assaulted Halle Berry when she won her Oscar) for so many years is kinda sickening. We see you.
Yeah, my first reaction to "The Academy does not condone violence of any form" was "the shell you don't, you give awards for it". That, ofc, doesn't make either nasty jokes or hitting someone okay, but, like, look in a mirror folks.

I don't think that this situation should be looked at as purely right/wrong as there are too many shades of gray in there. There are too many unknowns to take into consideration. Yes, Chris absolutely has the right to crack jokes and not be taken too seriously. Comedians should not have to worry about being hit by unhappy people in the audience. That being said what should the response be to some random dude on the street cracking jokes at someone that is sick? Sure Will laughed initially but perhaps it took a second to land what exactly was said. I know sometimes it takes me a few moments to process something - even watching comedians I will initially laugh and say "wait a minute - what?!"... We also do not know what additional struggles Jada has been dealing with behind the scenes. Sure she looked beautiful and well put together but those of us with chronic illness know what we put ourselves through to try and take part in society. We should look at things from all angles.
I'm kinda swaying towards will being over the top on this one. I've a chronic health condition (fibromyalgia) and I've a lot of self harm scars which are noticeable - I've had them made fun of by a comedian, that could've went either way for him, but I laughed and genuinely found it funny but half the room didn't join in until it was clear I wasn't taking offence and joked back with him. Chris didn't say anything bad about her, didn't say anything negative, that she looked bad or anything like that, just that she looked like a character from a movie - and again we don't know if it was known by him of her condition. I get that it's a sensitive subject for her, she may be having a bad time of it, but it was an off the cuff joke very likely with not much thought behind it let alone a dig at her condition. Yeah there's times people joke about me being "lazy" because of my condition and it hits a nerve but I can't hit the person any time it happens. Wills reaction was over the top
