"CODA" has won best picture at the 94th Academy Awards but it's not what people are talking about after the ceremony.
The center of attention is the physical altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock that took place after the comedian made a joke about Will's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
When the actor returned to his seat, he threw a tirade of f words at Rock who was visibly stunned by the exchange, but managed to keep it professional and continued on with his presentation.
The incident baffled the audience and viewers alike, and many are trying to figure out if it was part of the show or not.

Chris made a joke about his wife Jada. She has alopecia. Chris made a joke about seeing her soon in the sequel to the movie "G.I. Jane"...where the protagonist famously has a shaved, bald head. She did not laugh. Will seemed to at first, but then just strode up on stage, smacked the taste out his mouth, walked back to his seat and shouted at Chris "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth!" Twice. And Chris stood there gobsmacked trying to play it off the best he could. So...yeah. That happened.

Personally I really like Will Smith as an actor and musician. I believe that he did what was just, righteous and fair. Mr. Rock insulted his wife Jada and Will defended her HONOR by letting Chris Rock know in no uncertain terms that his disrespect of his wife was not only against her but him also. He is the head of his own household (Under GOD) and he stood up for his and his wifes HONOR! Yes he smacked Chris Rock upside the head but Mr. Rock is very lucky that Will didn't beat the living s**t out of him! I would have snickered in shock and dismay also. Then after putting Chris Rock in his place he also let him know that he would never, ever tolerate Mr. Rock even speaking HIS WIFE'S NAME AGAIN, EVER! How awesome! Good onya Will! Personally I really like Will Smith as an actor and I believe that even though he might have chuckled (Most likely due to shock and disrespect of himself and his wife), he did the right thing. Chris Rock had no right to insult Mrs Smith and Will defended his and her honor by putting Chris Rock in his place. Good on him! The fack that he then informed Chris Rock to keep his wife's name out of his f#*king mouth was also the proper response to let Mr. Rock know in no uncertain terms that he had utterly, completely disrespected both of them in a most vile and utterly comtempable way and that was completely unacceptable. The use of the F word was mearly another way of letting him know that Mr. Rock had better never, EVER cross that line again.Chris Rock is lucky that Mr. Smith didn't unleash his full and justified rage at Mr. Rocks scornful, comtempable and massively disrespectful words and behavior. There is not liking a joke and saying that, and then there is physical assault and screaming obscenities. Sure that joke wasn't in very good taste. But funny enough as long as Chris Rock made jokes about other celebrities, Smith was laughing along very loudly. He even laughed when Chris Rock first made the joke about Jada. It obviously took Smith a second to realise she didn't appreciate it and then he went nuts. Sorry, but that is hypocrisy.

Which means that Chris Rock deserved to be slapped for making fun of a woman's medical condition.
Reportedly, the conflict was not staged nor was it part of the show. It occurred after Rock pointed out Jada Pinkett Smith in the crowd and said, "Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it," referring to her bald head.
At first, Will Smith appeared to be laughing but Jada, who was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and has been vocal about her struggles about not being able to grow her hair, rolled her eyes at the joke and Will then walked up to Rock on stage and smacked him.

Oh for christ sake. Grow up and suck it up Will and Jada(who is only famous for being Will's wife.) It was an innocent joke. It's not like he was making fun of her disease, he just likened it to G.I. Jane is all. Quit being so sensitive. You're dealt the hand you're dealt. Get over it and deal with it. And if anyone is thinking "yeah, easy for you to say person with no disability", I have MS and sometimes you have to have a sense of humor.

If you watch the start of the video, initial reaction of Smith was laughing, while his wife was clearly not. Ressorting to violence just after laughing, worse walking quietly to your target and then out of nowhere punching him, is not "the heat of the moment"

About 40 minutes later, Smith won the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in King Richard, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. He referenced the moment while accepting it.
"Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family," Smith said.
"I've been called on in my life to love people and to protect people, and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. And have people talk crazy about you. People disrespect you and smile like it's OK."

I'm glad the justice system doesn't work like the US one here in the UK. Here, it's not the victim's decision whether charges get pressed or not - the police hand their evidence over to the Crown Protection Service and they decide whether they have a case to bring or not. We need a discourse on what is appropriate in comedy jokes. Rock has been going after her and all the Smiths incessantly. Making fun of Shumer for stealing jokes is edgy comedy. Making fun of an auto-immune disease or any body/health issue may eventually require a slap upside the head. Especially when more appropriate requests to stop have fallen on deaf ears. Will shouldn’t have done it to us viewers and the Oscars, but probably should have given the weasel a wake up call earlier on his harassment campaign. And what happened to CR? He used to be funny on his early stand up days. Now he’s a commercial actor or product shucker & tells weak sauce jokes. He’s worse than the comedians booked to perform on Disney cruises.

Staged to boost the Oscar's abysmal ratings. Professional actors, people payed millions of dollars to make fake drama for ratings and make it look real and they were both laughing at the very same joke right before this happened. There are clearly motives for both staged and not staged: (1) increased ratings or (2) anger in response to joke at wife's expense from person with history of bad blood with the assailant and assailant's wife. A lot of people love the conspiratorial possibilities but all motives should be remembered since often the simpler reason, the one that requires fewer people to keep secrets, is the likelier reason. Not saying that's what happened here since we don't know at this point.

Nah please it's a totally harmless illness that only affects her self-esteem... Nothing serious here. Moreover she only loss a little line of hair before deciding to shave her head... Qualifying a joke like this as an assault is discrediting people that suffer real assaults.

This was a genuine laugh. His eye and cheek muscles were engaged while smiling, indicating that he was truly smiling. An insincere laugh would be only a smile, possibly a wrinkled forehead, no laugh lines around eyes. Clearly it was funny until he was put on notice that it wasn't, when he turned to Jada and saw her shaking her head.

He didn't run anywhere. Was she fast forwarding the video. I've heard endless stories about her show, Red Table Talk, but I haven't heard anything about her alopecia before now. It's entirely possible that Chris Rock hadn't either, if he doesn't watch her show or read/listen to the type of news that would report on something like that. And yes, he was laughing and clapping, because he thought it was funny, until he was made aware by the shaking of his wife's head, that she didn't agree. His behavior was appalling and despicable, he should have been made to leave. Instead he's given airtime to preach about being a vessel for love. Love doesn't reside in any of that hypocritical behavior. He comes off looking like a punk âss bîtch,slapping someone and then yelling and cussing them across the room at a awards show that was full of what was supposed to be his peers. I never liked Chris Rock. He makes his money off of insulting other people and has stepped over the line more than a couple of times. This time he got slapped in his mouth for taking it too far. Maybe the sting of it will make him think twice before doing it again. Making fun of someone's medical condition is never ok. Did Will Smith over react, sure. But I'm not going to fault a man for defending his wife against a bully.

Wondering just how much worse it would have been if this were two women? Doubt many people would have been condoning it as much as they are bc these are two men....being a man doesn't give you a right to be violent to anyone. He could have made Chris rock look more like an ass if he would have just waited til his speech and used that to humiliate him not physically. Also I feel they all probably staged this. Not many ppl watch anymore. Really feel it was a ratings thing and people should be pointing the finger at the academy as well. Either way, my sons will know that this is not a true "man"

I don't know why, but I feel like he would never have walked up and slapped Gervais for saying the same. Such crap behaviour on Smith's part. People joke about bald men all the time and no one cares. Jada has embraced it and looks great, so I don't see joking about GI Jane, either with her or a woman who shaves her head is an issue. Perhaps there's actually some other history between these two men that we don't know about.

I don't understand why everyone are supporting Chris Rock, he made a derogatory joke about someone's embarrassing health issue to their face in front of hundreds of people. And he's been going after Jada/the Smiths for a while now. I'm not sure Will Smith handled it the right way, but tbh I can't get behind this outrage.

They can dislike what Chris Rock said AND dislike what Will Smith did. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is ...did Chris Rock KNOW that she had alopecia? If he didn't know then he couldn't be making fun of it. No matter how tasteless or mean a joke is I don't believe violence is the answer.

I don't condone Will Smith in the slightest but it's common knowledge that him and Chris Rock have had a long standing feud. Most people wouldn't then make fun of the spouse of the other person in a public speech. Joke or not, I can totally understand why Smith was fuming. He shouldn't have hit him but Rocks actions can easily be interpreted as bullying.

Personally,you can not make a joke about my pain right in front of the world,i will be pissed,we all have limits,Im not saying what will did was cool...but i think it hits harder when its about your love life and especially when there's someone making a joke about whats a big crack in your life,everyone is forgetting that it hurts,and we all can do this same thing.Will smith shouldnt have hit him tho.

I don't think that this situation should be looked at as purely right/wrong as there are too many shades of gray in there. There are too many unknowns to take into consideration. Yes, Chris absolutely has the right to crack jokes and not be taken too seriously. Comedians should not have to worry about being hit by unhappy people in the audience. That being said what should the response be to some random dude on the street cracking jokes at someone that is sick? Sure Will laughed initially but perhaps it took a second to land what exactly was said. I know sometimes it takes me a few moments to process something - even watching comedians I will initially laugh and say "wait a minute - what?!"... We also do not know what additional struggles Jada has been dealing with behind the scenes. Sure she looked beautiful and well put together but those of us with chronic illness know what we put ourselves through to try and take part in society. We should look at things from all angles.

I'm kinda swaying towards will being over the top on this one. I've a chronic health condition (fibromyalgia) and I've a lot of self harm scars which are noticeable - I've had them made fun of by a comedian, that could've went either way for him, but I laughed and genuinely found it funny but half the room didn't join in until it was clear I wasn't taking offence and joked back with him. Chris didn't say anything bad about her, didn't say anything negative, that she looked bad or anything like that, just that she looked like a character from a movie - and again we don't know if it was known by him of her condition. I get that it's a sensitive subject for her, she may be having a bad time of it, but it was an off the cuff joke very likely with not much thought behind it let alone a dig at her condition. Yeah there's times people joke about me being "lazy" because of my condition and it hits a nerve but I can't hit the person any time it happens. Wills reaction was over the top
