Here’s How People Reacted To Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock During The Live Oscars Broadcast (40 Posts)
"CODA" has won best picture at the 94th Academy Awards but it's not what people are talking about after the ceremony.
The center of attention is the physical altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock that took place after the comedian made a joke about Will's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
When the actor returned to his seat, he threw a tirade of f words at Rock who was visibly stunned by the exchange, but managed to keep it professional and continued on with his presentation.
The incident baffled the audience and viewers alike, and many are trying to figure out if it was part of the show or not.

During Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, her husband, Dr. Patrick Graves Jackson, gave her his full support and quietly comforted her. Like a good man should. They both demonstrated grace under pressure during this harrowing process.
Reportedly, the conflict was not staged nor was it part of the show. It occurred after Rock pointed out Jada Pinkett Smith in the crowd and said, "Jada, I love ya. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it," referring to her bald head.
At first, Will Smith appeared to be laughing but Jada, who was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and has been vocal about her struggles about not being able to grow her hair, rolled her eyes at the joke and Will then walked up to Rock on stage and smacked him.
About 40 minutes later, Smith won the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in King Richard, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. He referenced the moment while accepting it.
"Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family," Smith said.
"I've been called on in my life to love people and to protect people, and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. And have people talk crazy about you. People disrespect you and smile like it's OK."
Security should have been called to escort him out. They would have in a less privileged environment.
The guy who makes a joke on somebody's illness is not a comedian but an insensitive jerk.
I think the whole culture of award show hosts is vile and toxic. They are paid to stand up there and roast unsuspecting celebrities…
"I wanna apologize to the academy, I wanna apologize to all my fellow nominees," Smith said with tears in his eyes during his Oscar speech.
He did not, however, mention Rock's name in his apology.
"Tasteless joke" You can condemn Will Smith's actions without downplaying how inappropriate and cruel the joke was.
I mean, Harvey Weinstien (i honestly don't care how his name is spelt) used to sit and get thanked constantly while being an absolute scum of a human....so not so strange from Hollywood's elitist.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that they are aware of the incident and that Rock had declined to file a police report.
"If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report," the police explained.
We need a discourse on what is appropriate in comedy jokes. Rock has been going after her and all the Smiths incessantly. Making fun of Shumer for stealing jokes is edgy comedy. Making fun of an auto-immune disease or any body/health issue may eventually require a slap upside the head. Especially when more appropriate requests to stop have fallen on deaf ears. Will shouldn’t have done it to us viewers and the Oscars, but probably should have given the weasel a wake up call earlier on his harassment campaign. And what happened to CR? He used to be funny on his early stand up days. Now he’s a commercial actor or product shucker & tells weak sauce jokes. He’s worse than the comedians booked to perform on Disney cruises.
Later, Smith said actor Denzel Washington pulled him aside after the incident, telling him, "At your highest moment, be careful, that's when the devil comes for you."
Meanwhile, Smith's son Jaden tweeted, "And That's How We Do It."
I mean, this horrible event did show the world that Nicole Kidman’s face can move.
I can see his entire life, career flashing before his eyes in this meme
This- nobody cares anymore. Rich actors congratulating other rich actors for being rich actors is not something a lot of people enjoy anymore.
After seeing that slap I can't help but keep replaying that Dave Chappelle skit with Charlie Murphy and Rick James in my head.

Is this why it’s called a ‘punch’line?
Hahaha yes !
They need to bring Ricky Gervais back and put all these egotistical people back in their place... That's all I'm saying.. Ha, ha, ha....
I don't know why, but I feel like he would never have walked up and slapped Gervais for saying the same. Such crap behaviour on Smith's part. People joke about bald men all the time and no one cares. Jada has embraced it and looks great, so I don't see joking about GI Jane, either with her or a woman who shaves her head is an issue. Perhaps there's actually some other history between these two men that we don't know about.
She didn't just shave her head, she's been very outspoken about the ato immune illness she's suffering from that causes alopecia. Look at her face and you can see how much it hurt her. Doesn't apologize Will Smith's behavior though.
RaroaRaroa Gervais didn't make jokes about someone's illness. He made jokes about people's behaviors. It's a fair game. Illness, disabilities, physical conditions, and human suffering are NEVER fair games for a joke.
Busy Panda - Gervais is well-known for mocking people's appearances, especially plus-sized people, whom he never gives a break.
Bullies know their targets. Toxic males harass people they know they can get away with. Will Smith wouldn't have hit Ricky Gervais, Amy Schumer, or a lot of other people. And yes, I agree that a lot of people offended by the GI Jane reference are too young to understand it because they haven't the film and don't know Chris Rock is comparing her to a bad-a**, beautiful, sexy bald woman!
Ricky was asked what would he do at the Oscar? "Finish my career" love that man. Also he had a joke with alopecia on the Office, and he posted it. We joked about my mum being bold with cancer. Not Jada bold, more like Dwayne the Rock Johnson bold. At least we had a few more laughs....I think Will went after a small dude. He slapped Rock, but would have never done it to The Rock.
Gervais has never been at the Oscars before, at least not hosting them. Golden Globe is not the same thing, even if it's the same kind of BS
Debbie~ YOU READ MY MIND!!!
He hosted the golden globes, but I agree

These guys not realizing it was all staged... Mein gott!
I don't understand why everyone are supporting Chris Rock, he made a derogatory joke about someone's embarrassing health issue to their face in front of hundreds of people. And he's been going after Jada/the Smiths for a while now. I'm not sure Will Smith handled it the right way, but tbh I can't get behind this outrage.
They can dislike what Chris Rock said AND dislike what Will Smith did. The only thing I'm trying to figure out is ...did Chris Rock KNOW that she had alopecia? If he didn't know then he couldn't be making fun of it. No matter how tasteless or mean a joke is I don't believe violence is the answer.
Honestly, his joke could have been referring to her really short hair. I didn't know she has alopecia. Comedians habitually roast celebrities at the Oscars, so jokes in poor taste are common.
I feel like I read a lot of celebrity "news" and I had no idea she had alopecia. I honestly thought she was just so beautiful she could wear her hair that short and still look sexy and bad-a** (like, uh, G.I. Jane).
Yet mostly I'm seeing people praise Rock and insult Jada over her and Will Smith's marital problems. It seems unfair to me, but imo this whole situation isn't as much of a scandal as it's made out to be. And yes, Rock would have known about her condition as she's done multiple interviews about it, plus he has a history of making fun of Jada. The Academy have also come out and said he went off script and the joke wasn't approved.
remembering, that Cris Rock was kinda friends with Smiths and Jada publicly speaking about her hair issues... I would say that it was quite impossible for Rock not to know. Furthermore, good comics revise and research their jokes before blurting them to live audience, so that at least means, he did not do his homework that he was paid to do. Even further more, Rock made a documentary about Afro-American hair back in 2009, called Good hair, so he was much aware of the struggles of the afro american people with their hair. Even more, there was a part about alopecia in that movie. So even if he did not know that particularly Jada had alopecia, it was rude to make comments about someone's bald head when he actually knew the possible reasons why it might be bald.
because ASSAULT is illegal. Where did we lose you?
Was it derogatory, though? Indirectly calling her GI Jane could also be taken as "you look gooood!". Will was a true "Richard" and should face assault charges. (And it doesn't matter if Rock declined to press charges. The victim doesn't have to, as many domestic violence perpetrators find out.)
Excuse me, he did not sqy a word about the hair condition, probably had no idea about it. Compared Jada to a young and fit Demi Moore. And he talked about her short hair cut, same what ahw is rocking for 30 years on -off. Same as her daughter's, and hubby's cut. Also when she came out with it, she literally said " I can just laugh about it". It was a joke, you can like or dislike it.
She's spoken openly about it, there's no way he didn't know. Rock should take a lesson from better comedians and not use humour to punch down.
Go suck your fresh prince's small d**k, asswipe.
Thank you
Look, Rock stepped over a line ---- but Smith did too. Why does saying one stepped over a line mean we're negating that the other did, too?
Because people are actually praising him and saying things like "it's just a joke"?
Her hair is growing back. Check her recent pictures!
You're "not sure?" Does that mean that if a wife is rude to her husband she deserves to be hit?
Assault is illegal, spousal abuse is illegal, murder is illegal, we don't need to make false equivalences. It's really easy to go from kids fighting on the playground to premeditated attempted murder if you are willing to ignore circumstance and patterns.
