Staying optimistic helps us deal with whatever storms might come our way and reduces the negative effects of stress. The New York Times puts it best when it says that optimism isn’t about ignoring negative feelings, but it’s all about being hopeful for what the future might bring. So you don’t have to smile if you don’t feel like it—all it takes is some hope. However, hope and optimism aren't the same thing, as psychologist, priest, and published author Dr. Fraser Watts told Bored Panda. Scroll down for our interview with him.

Today Oliver Stopped Me Dead In His Tracks And Turned Back Around To See This Picture That He Spotted! He Just Stared At It In Awe
He recognized another boy like him, smiling and laughing on a display at Target. Oliver sees kids every day, but he never gets to see kids like him. This was amazing! I am so happy that other kids that pass through here with their parents, will see this! There is a lot of focus on representing diversity, but representing people with disabilities is just as important

According to Dr. Watts, optimism and hope aren't the same thing. "First, I need to make a distinction between hope and optimism, as Terry Eagleton does in his 2015 book called 'Hope without Optimism.' Optimism is more a matter of prediction. Hope is more a matter of attitude," Dr. Watts explained the difference between the two.
"In the present situation, I don't think there are any good grounds for optimism, and to be optimistic would be a retreat into a fantasy world," he pointed out. "However, even in present circumstances, it is possible and really helpful to maintain a positive, hopeful attitude."
Unfortunately, there's is no single surefire way of keeping that hope alive when things are tough. "Practice helps. It depends on a long process of cultivating a positive mindset. It is useful to be clear that hope does not depend on believing that everything is going to be fine. It is more an act of will."

It’s The Little Things
Even though most people don't distinguish between hope on the one hand and optimism on the other, the internet is full of advice on how to keep your spirits up even if things seem incredibly challenging. One of the ways to stay optimistic even when times are incredibly tough is sitting down and thinking about all the things that you’re grateful for having. Gratitude journals can help out with this, even though they might sound cheesy.
There are other ways to maintain your optimism, too. For example, Select Health stresses that taking care of yourself is vital when things are hard. That means exercising, getting plenty of rest, setting time aside for your hobbies.
And, yes, that even means treating yourself from time to time: whether it’s sinking into a hot bath after a long week at work or sneaking in an hour of video gaming in between doing homework (we won’t tell if you won’t). When you do what you love without guilt or shame, suddenly the world feels brighter, doesn’t it? As long as you don't overindulge, of course.

Sadio Mane, The Liverpool Star Earning Approximately $10.2M Per Year Has Given The World A Lesson In Modesty After Some Fans Spotted Him Carrying A Cracked iPhone
His response is legendary:
“Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and 2 jet planes? What would that do for the world? I starved, I worked in the fields, I played barefoot, and I didn’t go to school. Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools & a stadium; we provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty. I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me,” Mane said.
My Dad Hasn’t Painted In Over 30 Years. Now That He’s Retired He Decided To Pick Up A Brush Again
Things are always easier to bear when you’re surrounded by loved ones, Forbes points out. So even if you’re feeling down in the dumps or as blue as a Smurf, take some time to connect. Give your siblings a call or arrange to meet with a pal you haven’t seen in some time.
This whole end-of-the-world business doesn’t seem as scary when you’re laughing and having fun with awesome peeps. Meanwhile, we hope that these wholesome stories will be enough for now.

Hearing The Words From Love
Nurse here. Had a coma patient for over half a year with high brain damages. Nobody ever thought her to wake up again. But she did. She remembered so many little details. Who likes who, who uses her electrical brush or the manual brush to clean her teeth. What my brothers name was etc.. Will never ever forget her saying her first Good Morning and making me almost poo myself. I am honored I witnessed this 'miracle'
It's true, I was in a coma and then in and out of consciousness for approx 6 weeks. I knew what was going on around me, even though sometimes it took me an hour or two to figure what was real and what was imagined. I heard the nurses gossip, my mother and father visiting, and everything around me. When they put ice around me during a fever I was hallucinating that I was elsewhere when suddenly I was surrounded by bags of ice etc. I still vividly remember much of this three years later.
dammit.... I'm in tears.... to be shown that much love. May we all be so lucky. <3
I had my cousins hold the phone up to my aunt's ear while she was unconscious and dying in a hospital room, thousands of miles from me. She was my soulmate and kindred spirit. I told her that her love for me saved my life, and that I would carry that love forever in my heart. I told her how much she meant to me, and how I was going to miss her. I gave a eulogy at her funeral. The night of funeral, I looked up in the sky and saw a shooting star. I hope it was her, saying goodbye.
Both times I have been in a coma time was non existent. I didn't hear anything. I didn't see anything. It was like a snap of the fingers. First time was 1 week. Second time was 3 days.
Everyone makes mistakes, it makes you human. But what he did for his mother was one of the sweetest things he good at that point in time.
I'm really glad he heard his mom and did the same for her. My coma experience was different. The time part was the same. To me it was instantaneous. To my family it was 9 days of talking, praying, waiting and worrying. I know my kids, my husband and my friends all talked to me. They even tried to annoy me into waling up but I never heard anything. For me one minute I'm sitting at the computer playing a game when my arm started moving on it's own and the next I'm in a hospital bed and 9 days has gone by. It was a surreal feeling.
I did the same for my mother. She was put in a coma and before I left her for the day (they didn't allow me to stay longer), I told her what an amazing woman and mother she was, how much she taught me, how beautiful was seeing her and my son together, and how much I loved her. Though she was unconscious, she shed a tear, and I'm sure she heard me. That was the last time I saw her alive. I miss her so much ♡
i spoke to my dad just before he passed he was not awake but i told him i loved him all the wonderful things he had done for me and i had never appreciated at the time i hope he heard me too
Moms know their kids love them, even when they"aren't the best." Know how? We had moms, too. And none of us were always the best.
I was in a coma once after a car crash, maybe it was the concussion, but I felt like I'd been asleep for 5 years, not days, and didn't remember a thing. Literally had to pinch myself because I couldn't believe what the doctor told me had happened
Oooo, you're on BoredPanda instead of doing work, oooo... Lol, jk.
Load More Replies...I read a book to my Mom while she was in a coma and when her breathing changed, I told her that everyone was waiting for her on the other side and she could go......so she did. I still miss her.
I did the same thing with both parents. Dad 2018, mom 2019. Hardest period of my life and I'm still drowning. I'm glad I talked to them tho. I told everyone that came to see them to talk to them like you normally would, they can hear you.
I tried to talk to my grandma when she was getting ready to pass, I would get so choked up and start crying. I had so much to tell her and I couldn't, I miss her everyday. You were an awesome son!!
As a retired hospice nurse, I am certain she heard you and it helped her pass in peace. Bless your heart.
I was in a coma for 3 months with terrible hallucinations. One night the nurse called my husband back bcause they couldn't calm me down. When he came back he reminded me that there was a wallpaper boarder in the hospital room n said if I couldn't see it then the hallucination wasn't real. Believe me!!! People in a coma can hear you and it really helps. I calmed down immediately.
My coma was a bit different, I was heavily sedated on profofol while on a ventilator after 3 cardiac arrests. I remember bits between the arrests, which they told me is strange, but I also remember bits and pieces of when I was out. Some of the things I heard, they got woven into a very intricate dream. Some of the dream was just complete crazy. But when they woke me, after they decided my heart had healed enough, it felt like a decade and no time had passed. And it was still a couple more days before I was completely aware.
I'm a retired ICU nurse and I've had a lot of patients say they've heard relatives or is nurses talk to them. I've always encouraged relatives to talk to them relative who is a patient. The hearing is the last sense to go.
After 3 weeks my perception of time was also "instant".though I remember seeing my husband's face -while in coma and it was beyond words beautiful.
She heard you. I'm a medium and could feel her the second I read it. Hope you don't take any offense. Just heard how much she loved you and always saw the good and had hope. Stay strong❤️
I was in a coma for four weeks as a kid. They had just planted corn in the field beside our house, but when I came home it was a foot high. I thought it was magic!
I was in a coma for 3 months. I had terrible hallucinations and one time the nurse called my husband to calm me down, he spoke to me n told me that in the hospital room there's a wallpaper boarder up on the walk. He told me if I couldn't see the boarder on the wall that it was a hallucination and not real. I'm here to tell you coma patients can here you and it really does help.
Mom's don't expect perfection, just love. And you gave that to her! Bless you.
Your love She always knew because even when our children are not kind and show disrespect Mother’s love is unconditional, so She Knows!
my grandmother on my mother's side passed in 2016, she raised me as a toddler and I never got to say "goodbye"
How could this person hear what their mother said if the coma's duration seemed "instant"?
Hearing is the last sense to go... always speak loving words to the dying.
If you were not a good son, she would not have done the things she did for you as well as she did.,
I'm sure she heard you. Hearing is the last thing to go. None of us are perfect, we simply move forward.
I bet you were a better son than you realize. I'm so glad you had that last time with your mom, you spent it well.
I think she heard you. I sat next to my mom for 3 days and talked about our family and what a good mom she'd been. I sang songs. She and I had our problems, but I am the most like her and carry a lot of her inside me. She did her best. I think they hear us.
When my grandma with dementia got a blood-cloth in her brain, we were told she wouldn't wake up again. I stayed at a friends house for a week so I could be close to the hospital. I came by every single day and talked/read to her.
My friends mother was in an induced coma. Another friend brought 4 singer from one of the top choirs in Dublin to sing for her. As they sang my friend noticed his mother weeping uncontrollably despite being in a coma. People can definitely hear you in a medically induced coma.
No one is ALWAYS a good son or daughter. Dude did exactly the right thing when he was needed most. When my grandmother passed, she, too, was "asleep" first. On her last day it was clear she wasn't going to be with us much longer. I let my mom (her daughter) go get lunch, and I sang my granny's favorite hymns and read to her from the Bible. Just before my mom came back I leaned over to granny and whispered, "We will miss you, but it's okay, you can go on now. We'll see you again soon." It was like she was waiting for that permission to go. (My mom was having a hard time letting go of her.) She passed later that evening. I've always been glad I had that time with her, even when she couldn't respond. I know she heard everything.
My boyfriend was in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks after being hit by a drunk driver. He said for him it felt like just being asleep. He didn’t dream or anything though. He didn’t hear anything either. But when he did woke up he didn’t remember anything or why he was in there and thought the male nurse (a tall bulky guy) was trying to murder him lol so he fought back
You were the best son for being there for her on her last day. Sincerest condolences my friend.

Lately, for a while, I haven't been feeling well. I've had my ups and downs, but I remained worried, demotivated, and feeling lost thoroughly. I'm logging into BoredPanda for the first time in a few months to say, thank you so much for this article. It's the news I didn't know I needed so badly. I cried, I smiled, I felt gratitude and hope and a renewed sense of love and joy for all around me. Even if I have my ups and downs, I still have a lot of reasons to persevere and be happy, and this article opened my eyes to that. Thank you so much for these, each one so special in it's own way. But what sticks in mind is the man that cared because he's a Christian, and people got so hung up about it. There are different reasons folk go out of their way to help others, his was because he follows Jesus Christ. Some people follow other religions and some no religion but still show they care. Obviously we're all different, and some do their caring in ways that don't hit the headlines. I don't know what the argument is about. Let's all do whatever we can, whenever we can, to help the humans and animals we see around us.

2018, I had 2 "small" strokes that cause blindness in my right peripheral vision & I recovered. Was unconscious for about a day and I remember being i. beautiful blue green water and being able to breathe, it was magical. Then in 2019, I has a grand mal seizure followed by another seizure no label this time but both put me in the ICU. The first seizure I had a visit from a childlike entity who communicated with me by playing music thru the slits in it's skin. The conversation was about me finding the adult that the entity belonged with. Eventually they were able to reunite. I remember that the entity told me it didn't mean to hurt me. I was confused and the adult entity told me the the young one was attracted to my energy but when it reach out to communicate with me it blew my circuits! Literally! The adult said that my frequency did not match the young ones frequency and short circuited me. That was the 1st seizure the 2 seizure was blank. hathseconthe

I’m 60 years old and just discovered BoredPanda. I will love this for the rest of my life. It is so very refreshing and encouraging to see and read about people’s kindness and love! This is the kind of drama the world should see more of. Thank you, everyone!
Load More Replies...I love these sort of posts but, Bored Panda, please don't head it with "New Pics" when they aren't. I've seen at least 20 of these before, here on Bored Panda.
