If You Don’t Think Your Kids Need A Dog After Seeing These Pics, You Must Be A Cat (New Pics)
In 2017, Cambridge researchers looked at the interactions of 12-year-olds and their pets in 77 British households. The children were asked about the quality of relationships with their family members, including pets. That quality was calculated across four different dimensions: satisfaction with the relationship, feelings of companionship, communication, and conflict.
Of those parameters, the kids reported not only less conflict with pets than their siblings, but also more satisfaction. That's a polite, academic way of saying they felt a stronger bond with their pet than with their brother or sister. Moreover, researchers noted that in the hierarchy of pets, kids were most bonded with dogs.
So consider this original Bored Panda list as the following argument: if you believe that your kids don't need a dog, you must be a cat. While we're at it, check out a compilation of photos we put together in the past to support this claim too.

You are right on! I have an autistic son that has a support dog. They are much different together than apart. My son (23, 6'2",245 lbs) would hide behind me (5'7"). When kipper goes he in front, talking to people, basically he is relaxed enough to take the lead and not hide behind me. Kipper has been A Good send for us.

Coming back to the eye-opening research we talked about at the beginning of this post, Matt Cassels, a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the Department of Psychiatry, who led the study, said that anyone who has loved a childhood pet knows that we turn to them for companionship and disclosure, just like relationships between people.
"We wanted to know how strong these relationships are with pets relative to other close family ties. Ultimately this may enable us to understand how animals contribute to healthy child development," Cassels explained.

I'm a little scared on how they both have the same smile going even though one is a pupper. I've never seen a smile to that degree on a dog. With that smile, I bet that pup gets away with murder.
According to the academic, even though pets may not fully understand or respond verbally, the level of disclosure to pets was no less than to siblings. And the fact that pets cannot understand or talk back may even be a benefit! It means they are completely non-judgmental.
"While previous research has often found that boys report stronger relationships with their pets than girls do, we actually found the opposite. While boys and girls were equally satisfied with their pets, girls reported more disclosure, companionship, and conflict with their pet than did boys, perhaps indicating that girls may interact with their pets in more nuanced ways," Cassels said.
Dr. Nancy Gee, Human-Animal Interaction Research Manager at WALTHAM and a co-author of the study, added that evidence continues to grow, showing that pets have positive benefits on human health and community cohesion.
"The social support that adolescents receive from pets may well support psychological well-being later in life but there is still more to learn about the long term impact of pets on children’s development."

IDF has a special program that trains and employs autists to detect threats, etc. They are known for skills of observation and analysis (and patience!) that neurotypicals would find quite difficult! This is not a 'handicapped' program - they are highly valued members of the team!

I've been fortunate to have had two weighted blanket bodyguards in the past few years. There's not much lovelier than a friend who wants to be with you all the time, and somehow the furry contact is always enjoyable. And I don't even have this child's need for contact -- but if he continues to have dogs as he grows up, he'll probably never lack for it! Dogs just know what you need, I truly believe.

This is criminally adorable! I love how you can see one little tuft of tail hair sticking out by the little girl's collar. I always thought that "cats were liquids" and could fit their bodies into all sorts of odd places, but this pup may have just proved me wrong.

Someone suggested the dog might be worried the baby isn’t visibly eating, so is “feeding” the baby. They tried giving the baby a bowl of food at the same time. It worked!

My dog has always done this. She grabs a mouthful of food, runs into the living room, barks at it while sticking her rear in the air, then paws at it a bit. Then finally eats it. No idea why. She was a year old when we got her, so no idea.

She's play-hunting. You could try hiding her food around the room, or under assorted upturned plantpots/buckets etc, for example, and tell her to 'find it,' she'll soon get the idea. Or, if you have somewhere with suitable hard floors, you can toss a handful of her kibble on the floor for her to chase/hunt. (Use some of her kibble from usual meal, rather than treats, prevent extra weight gain.) I have a feeling she'd enjoy those sorts of games.

omfg I want this dog, he reminds me of my ooshy bear (Lucius) he was a rescue pit, he was bred and raised as a bait dog and was an albino red nose. Looked a LOT like this guy but mine was all white. His ears were docked way to low so they looked evil (but they kept his tail I'm assuming to whip with) he had hot grease poured down his back at some point so was scarred. he was a beast. When I saw him I thought "he's gonna eat my face" but I gave him a treat and he laid his head in my head and just sighed all 5 years of stress away. I took him home and he was my best friend. He wouldn't let me go upstairs without checking it out first. 6 months later he passed away from seizures. I have never found a doggo like him and I miss him so bad. RIP my Ooshy Bear. Mama loves you.

Oh god, that made me tear up. I'm still glad he got to live with you for 6 months. At least he got to know you. I feel your pain... there's a hole in my heart for my Lemmy, too. I miss him. And my girl Scully has already carved her own hole in my heart, where she will be missing whenever she passes (she's only 6, so there's time!). good thing there's endless place for dog-shaped holes in my heart.

That's so sweet. People forget that children and dogs can be tricky. For the child the dog might be strong and have big teeth, and they can't predict what it's going to do, and for dogs children can also be unpredictable, move jerkily, squeal etc. So when they can come together successfully it's lovely.

I think this is an Anatolian Kangal Breed. Hard to train but instinctively very protective shepherds. They are used to protect sheep from wolves.

When my son was just walking, we had a German Shepherd, an Alsatian and a Newfie. Neighboring dogs would join in. The PRESIDENT didn't have that much security. I think I counted 11 dogs at one time. I never worried about where he wandered (much - we lived in a rural area and they, kid & critters, had bells). Those dogs would have killed ANYTHING that threatened him. Wish I'd had the foresight to get pictures.

One of our dogs is a therapy dog, and honestly, he thinks "working" is the best thing in the world. So even though people get happy when the dogs visit, the dogs love it even more, especially with children -- it really is a perfect match! (And not being able to work during the pandemic has been real hardship for him; how do we ever explain it to him? We can't!)

My last dog Samba did this for me. I was ill in bed with a serious chest infection and stayed with me the whole time. He wouldn't go for walks he just did what he had to do in the garden instead and then rushed back in to be with me. I loved him so much. It still hurts me so bad that he's gone even though it's been 6.5 years ago. He was my soulmate.

I hate to be 'that' person, but both dogs don't look happy. Could be the camera - many dogs hate being photographed - so I'm not jumping to conclusions. But if your dog looks like THAT all the time around your kid, make sure leaving is ALWAYS an option for the dog. Always-always. No exceptions, even if the kid just wants to cuddle. Dogs' only defense is snarling as a warning, and if they do TAKE THE KID AWAY and never-ever punish the dog for snarling. Ever. My (passed) boy Lemmy had been trained that snarling was bad, so he didn't snarl. He just skipped that step. Guess what the next step is? I got many-a-hole in my body from him, and I loved him dearly and he loved me dearly, but it took a while for me to learn his limits. If I'd had a child, he wouldn't have been able to live with me. I'd have missed 8 amazing years with him.
