The name of the Pelican is Osman not Petey. He was sort of a town mascot in Turkey. He was not able to fly because of his age or injuries. And the this stray dog was his best friend and protector. The photograph is at least a decade old. And Osman had died few years ago, but it is true that the dog was never visited the beach again after Osman died. Science claims that a companion animal can be an excellent solution to many psychological problems. You can call it the pet effect. How does it work? To find out, Bored Panda spoke to Antonio Diaz, a certified and professional K-9 trainer and dog behavioral specialist based in Las Vegas, about the health benefits of having an adorable dog in your life.

“Dogs give people a reason to keep living. My German Shepherd, Brooklyn, literally helped me get through depression after a bad motorcycle accident in 2012 and she is the reason I found my passion and I am doing what I love. Dogs can be extremely affectionate towards humans and they also have the ability to read our body language much better than we (most people) can read theirs."

Studies have shown that dogs can make people happier, lower blood pressure, lower heart rates, and help to release serotonin and other 'feel good' hormones in the brain. Dogs can literally help you live longer! Moreover, “Dogs are used in courtrooms to help victims of sexual and violent crimes speak during their testimony. They are used to help children build confidence in reading and also used to bring happiness to the elderly.”

But these smart dogs, just like us, have different characters too, right? Antonio confirms: “Some dogs are more independent and like more space, therefore may not pay enough attention to their owner to understand them. These dogs would be less likely to read or understand their human counterparts. I believe that is dependent on the strength of the bond and relationship between a person and their dog. The more time you spend with your dog and the more emotional states they witness, the better they can understand you. With all that said, dogs are master observers and probably know more about us than we think.”

This man must be very kind to these dogs. "You can tell a man's character by the way he treats animals." The man in the hospital has to be one very special human being.

Froma Walsh, a Professor Emerita from the University of Chicago's Department of Psychiatry, claims that our ancestors already knew about the importance of the human–animal bond. “In ancient times and in cultures worldwide, animals have been respected as essential partners in human survival, health and healing. Many spiritual traditions have honored the relationships of people to animal forms of life.” In fact, “Dogs were considered such loyal companions during life that they were revered as guides in the afterlife. When a pet dog died, the owners shaved off their eyebrows, smeared mud in their hair, and mourned aloud for days.”

Adult dog doesn't quite know why the humans want him to put his paw in the boot - seems like an odd thing to do, really - but if that's what makes them happy then he'll go along with it.

I can just hear the classic line “You’re my only friend” that we ALL said to the dog (cat, guinea pig, hamster, etc) after our parents punished us and sent us to our rooms. (For me, it was 1969 and our cat Melvin.)

This one is just obnoxiously judgemental. The dog is probably happy to have the chance to walk to the post office, and they probably live in a small town where people don’t steal dogs. I grew up in a town like that and usually the window is facing the street so you can keep an eye on your dog. Most dogs are very cold-resistant, and sitting outside for 10 minutes in the cold doesn’t bother them. Especially after a nice walk in town. The leash is short so the dog doesn’t jump on passerbys or get out into the road. Dogs enjoy being part of your life. They are much more miserable being stuck at home, bored, feeling like their day is full of nothing but laying around. They like being able to go places and do things. It would be nice for the dog to have a sweater, maybe, but some dogs overheat quickly when they’re walking and don’t appreciate the restriction of movement. The dogs owner is probably so humiliated that dog won’t be allowed to walk to the post office anymore.nice

I couldn't do that to a dog. He has no room to move. Why not just leave dog home while running errands? I'm glad she gave him a coat, but I'd be scared someone would take him or be mean to him.

I definitely wouldn't leave my dogs tied up outside shops in case they were stolen but maybe she lives somewhere known to be very safe and everyone knows each other? Maybe she was going to be out and about doing things for a few hours and this felt the better option as at least the dog was with her for most of it. 🤞

I take my dogs everywhere but not in the cold nor heat. I make sure to never ever leave them alone. I go to places that I can take them with me inside or either my hubby or I stay with them in the car. If not, they're staying home.

There are some places are ok to bring your pets and some are not. It's a part of judgment of the owner and circumstances their in. In this case the owner showed understanding/responsibility for bringing a pet with them to a public place. Yet, he/she took EVERY steps to take care of the pet as much as possible . For that person, this dog is like a child. Being responsible, understanding of your surroundings, and being sensible to your pet to this extent, shows GREAT moral maturity of that person. Double Hands Up!!! Whoever you are, Please Don't stop to act like your kind heart and educated mind tells you to!

Actually makes a lot of sense. She'll be in a warm place if she has to wait a long time on line. The dog won't be.

I’ve seen this same scene, but with a homeless young man and his dog. It was 14 degrees outside. The man took off his coat and put it on his dog before entering the store. The dog stayed faithfully put. He was not tied up.

Growing up, a lady friend of the family stopped walking the three-kilometer trail in the woods every day when she was around 87 years old. Not because she was too old for it, but her poodle was!

I don’t know. He’s probably like this because he can sense the people giving him the belly rubs are harmless. He might be totally 180 degrees different if he senses something bad about someone. Dogs are, more often than not, really excellent judges of character.

Not surprising at all. I was punk back in the very early 1980s, and we all loved animals, lots of us had cherished pets, and a couple even went on to become veterinarians! I mean, what person with a beating heart pumping warm blood could resist a big fluffy dog? Or a little non-fluffy one? Or a cat? Or any cuddly animal? It all comes from your love of all living things, so it doesn’t matter what music you listen to, how you dress, or what lifestyle you pursue.

Thank you Kathy for your compassion. Unfortunately, the majority of "people" hurt, torture, and brutally, mercilessly murder animals for fun, entertainment, simply for joy of killing. And do not forget that farm animals are sentient being too, they suffer immensely in factory farms and die in unimaginable pain and anguish in high - speed slaughter houses for human insatiable appetite for meat.

Worked for RNIB in the UK and had two guide dogs in the office - one golden and one black. Made picking out clothes that would hide dog fur impossible. Always went home covered in fluff. In offices guide dogs aren't working most of the time, they sleep under the desk or mooch around getting love from adoring colleagues♥.

Ears straight= life is great. Ears curled = alone in the world. Handy rhyme to know if a fawn needs help or is just waiting for mom to come back. The ears of a fawn who hasn't eaten in a while will start to curl up at the tips.

The fawn is tagged, so there's a chance this photo was set up- with their positioning I'd honestly guess it was because I find it doubtful that the dog would've sat through the fawn settling into that position. Regardless I'm guessing the person who tagged the fawn knows fairly well what they're doing- one hopes anyway. Either way this isn't a real random happenstance kinda picture, but still kinda cute in a way.

Deer mamas often leave their fawns where they "think it is safe" while they forage. They DO RETURN to get them, the fawns are NOT abandoned. So this is sweet, but not necessarily "good". I would discourage this "relationship".

I actually remember their story. It was extremely sad (I think 2 years ago). They were living in the yard of a bad person, somewhere in Romania (can't remember the city). They were left to starve there and they were also sick. After they were rescued they received proper treatment (the picture is at the vet's clinic, right after they were rescued) and they were taken into foster by a kind woman. Unfortunately, the mommy lost the battle because she was very skinny, she didn't eat and she was sick. The pup I remember that was adopted and he's happy at his home with his wonderful parents. Their names are Zenta (the mom) and Nelson (the little pup). I really wanted to share this story with you guys, mostly to raise awareness in what happens in Romania. It's an awful place for animals, from dogs to snails, believe it or not.

Frenchies are such happy personable dogs! Crazy health problems but that doesn't stop that animal from loving life and living it to the fullest. Cross breeding them to get a better nose is definitely a good idea though

One sunny day doesn't make summer. Yes, there are pitbulls that have been trained right, but also they were bred as fighting dogs. The number of reports of pitbulls attacking other dogs and humans can't be ignored. I'm not against dogs or certain types of dogs, I just want people to be aware that any dog including pitbulls can bite. Too many people assume that they can touch or stroke any dog they meet. That just isn't true.

I think it's mostly that pitbulls are fantastically powerful dogs - toy breeds attack and bite other dogs and people all the time, but when a pitbull bites you, you really really notice. It's nice to see people recognize this and train their pitts extra carefully

Doggy racism is a thing! There are NO dangerous breeds only stupid owners that dont understand the complex needs of all dogs. You must feed, water,LOTS of exercise and love. Give rules but always use positive praise for good behaviour not negative punishment and hay presto any dog including Bull breeds can be sweet family friends.

Dogs only get vicious from neglect and abuse. If you treat them well, they turn into the sweetest doggos. If you treat them poorly, they become aggressive.

You may want to look into getting her a crate so she has her own "protective" space. Some dogs find comfort in their puppy caves.

I agree - crate, tent, something of her own where she can climb in and feel safe and comfy would be a great idea.

She's not an idiot. Most likely she's trying to find a safe space to relax. Newly adopted dogs tend to be scared and seek shelter - place that shields them from at least two sides and from the top, and also has a good view of the surroundings. That's a stressed dog practice.

Love your short loving sentences. She needs a blanket and a stuffed toy for a pillow. Just put it on her and the pillow under her head and she will relax with a big sigh.

When my husband goes to work in the morning one of my dogs puts on a dancing, spinning peformance in the hope it will persuade him that staying with us is by far the better option (he already knows it is). Then when he gets home our doggo has to be carried for the first 10 minutes. Work is such a nuisance!
