Weird World: 50 Amazing Facts From This Instagram Page To Satisfy Your Curiosity
InterviewIt’s a weird and wonderful world we live in, and there’s nobody out there who knows it better than the admins of Weird World. These linked Instagram and Facebook accounts share strange and interesting facts about science, history, and practically anything you can imagine!
We bet this page would go over well with anyone who enjoys juicy bits of trivia about everything and anything, but everyone is bound to find something that’ll satisfy their curiosity. What was the first ever fashion statement observed in chimpanzees? When in our lives do we start smiling and laughing less? Their page scratches all of these “I wonders” and more.

i had a professor do something similar. a classmate's wife showed up with their baby girl because she had to go to the hospital to translate for her mom, and the baby wasn't vaccinated yet. he didn't know what to do about our next class, but i suggested we go talk to prof. he said "she's welcome in class on one condition. I get to hold her FIRST!" and picked her up to tell her what a cutie she was and how great her dad was doing in his class. in the 1st 5 min of that class, he said that since we clearly hadn't read all his class rules, he would remind now that he 100% will work with you whenever there's family or medical issue, big or small. you go to school to provide for your family better. if you can't take care of them when you need to, then what was the point. bring your kid to class, call in if you stay home sick with them (long before covid policies), schedule a make up exam, whatever you need.
I do the same in my class. The only exception is when one student started to change her kid's diaper ON THE DESK during class and I (politely) asked her to change the baby in the bathroom as poop is a biohazard....
"Even breastfeed", only in America would this be thought of as surprising. No one would ever give a mother feeding her child a second thought and certainly not a second look in Europe.
Yeah, the “even breastfeed” part grated me, too. That should be the FIRST thing that is “permitted”.
Load More Replies...OR, and I'm just saying, how about a welfare state that provides child care so that women don't have to attend classes with the distraction of a child?
You said it, but not always this is the case. I live in a country that gives up to a year of paid leave and gives support to those that choose so stay with the child at home up until they’re three years old. I did my masters thesis when baby was 2-6 months old. My husband then cared for baby when she was 6-12 months old. It was convenient for me to do the thesis then so it wouldn’t interfere with my real work. We don’t want to be pushed aside in the society. Icelandic MP gave speech in the parliament to her fellow MPs and television cameras while breastfeeding her baby.
Load More Replies...I took my daughters with me to class and had to do a presentation that day and my professor was really cool about it
The page is the brainchild of three friends who created it together in 2011. We reached out and they agreed to tell BoredPanda more about their page, which they created “as a way to share all the fascinating and weird information we come across.”
They emphasized that this had been an interest before they ever began sharing their posts with others, indicating that they regularly “sought out the most captivating and extraordinary facts, stories, and phenomena discovered on the internet.”
I will remember Him, all my days. He changed history by saving those 13 lives. The world will be a better place because of him. Amen
Such a beautiful soul. May he rest in eternal peace and comfort. He is proof that there is hope for humanity.
“We enjoy researching and sharing a wide range of topics,” the admins explained, “but our personal favorite types of posts revolve around natural phenomena and anomalies. These topics often captivate our interest and inspire us to delve deeper into understanding the unexplained.”
Mr. Rogers is an automatic upvote. If only there was an episode where he had met Bob Ross, my childhood CRT TV might have exploded out of sheer awesome.
Mr. Rogers talking to Bob Ross would like ASMR. we wouldn't last 5 minutes.
Load More Replies...That photo is from some years later. Here's an article with photo from original episode. https://www.poolmagazine.com/pool-news/how-a-mr-rogers-episode-featuring-a-pool-helped-fight-segregation/
Thank you, Scott J, context is always important. The picture used here is from 1993 as they revisited the 1969 incident. There are so many, but the best part of all this for me is that the "cop" is a gay actor, something Fred was very much aware of at the time. This here? This is how Christians are supposed to act towards their fellow humans. We never deserved Mr. Rogers, but by golly we needed him!
Load More Replies...I think Mr Rogers, in times past would have been considered a prophet. His favorite number was 143 which was also his constant weight. The number of letters in I LOVE YOU.
I will never understand why racism is a thing, esp stuff like this. Like, what did they think would happen back then? That color washes off? And they might become black? I don't get it. I mean, I know what I've read about that time period, but it still doesn't make sense. Especially when we know that people freakin pee in pools, so you're telling me that pee is preferable than sharing a swimming pool with someone of color? Yeah, nah.... gtfo with that nonsense
He also dried off the policeman's feet. Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers my head would have exploded.
The ONLY celebrity I would have given anything to meet..What a human being!
The admins also discussed the preferences they’ve noticed among their readers. It turns out that Weird World followers “particularly enjoy posts that delve into mysterious topics [, w]hether it's unsolved mysteries, paranormal phenomena, or strange occurrences[.]”
Who the f**k ridicules some random person with a gift on the train? Food and flowers sound like a normal Valentine's day gift or something like that, who expects more is greedy
Also the restraint not to eat that delicious pizza and just arrive with flowers (which is sufficient in itself!).
Load More Replies...This is WHY he has a partner at home, and all those jealous fools can do is jeer. They need to shut up and take notes
I would love to have someone bring me pizza and flowers. I'm one of those people who likes the simpler things in life - don't need expensive or fancy.
They were making fun of him??? People are just so stupid and mean. He looks so perplexed and hurt. Who wouldn't love a present of flowers and pizza (but mostly pizza)?!?!?
I would be overjoyed if my husband bought me pizza and flowers hell I don't even need the flowers
The price of a bouquet of flowers is ridiculous. My dude is on point, it probably took a hell of a lot of money for that. Plus, pizza is never a bad thing either.
I think you're right. IIRC the first enslaved woman to sue for her freedom and win was Elizabeth Key, over 100 years earlier. (I am NOT good at history, so please correct me if that's fully wrong)
Load More Replies...The story is true and it's really cool, but that picture isn't of Mum Bett, it's of an African American civil right activists named Sojourner Truth. She was active in the early and mid 1800's and is most famous for her "Ain't I a Woman Speech". Just want the information out there.
In the first US census in 1790, Massachusetts was one of three states to report 0 slaves.
I didn't even know people sued for their freedom. How amazing! Although, you'd think one case won would set the precedent, thereby illegalizing slavery within each state where such a lawsuit was won. Or is that only if I higher court hears the case? Idk, I'm not a lawyer, just seems odd. And a woman at that, the odds are so stacked, and to win, just amazing.
I think that was a common name chosen when freed. Although, she may have started the trend. Either way, strongest women award contender, you know,...if they gave out such an award (outside the octagon of course). Or maybe there is one and I've been failing to nominate awesome chicks each year? Someone educate me!
Load More Replies...A quick correction: the woman on the left is Sojourner Truth (who is a fascinating person in her own right), not Elizabeth Freeman.
She actually overheard the prominent men of the town as they were discussing and writing the 'Resolves of Sheffield' and realized there wasn't any reason it didn't apply to her. Truly amazing woman! Also, the 'Resolves of Sheffield' were basically "borrowed" by Thomas Jefferson in writing the Declaration of Independence.
Just wondering, is she Morgan Freeman's great great (whatever number great) grandmother?
Edited for ridiculous misspellings, sorry: Possibly, but I would bet that the more likely scenarios is that he's definitely related to someone freed long ago. Maybe her, maybe any number of amazingly strong people who survived the horror of enslavement and lived to see better years as free citizens.

I think we need to think about not what people are, but what they can be
I was thinking this as well. He might just like his grand daughter but still think of others as beneath him.
Load More Replies...Everybody has a heart somewhere. Most of it just seems to get buried in c**p!
Almost exactly what happened with me! My VERY xenophobic father, who is Ashkenazi, was so angry I had married a man from Bangladesh who was also Muslim (AND I was already pregnant) that he didn't talk to me four ~4 months. Guess who his favorite granddaughter is? Go ahead, take a guess. He loves her so much it's unbelievable. She's 20 now, and we, in good fun, have several 'bits' we do about 'Racist Grandpa' (but never to his face, lol).
I love this! I wish my son's grandparents on his father's side were like this ! They never will be . My " baby " is 23, graduated college Magna Cum Laude and is now in grad school, but to them he will always just be a half breed not worthy of them . :(
They don't deserve to know him. I'm sorry you've experienced this.

My wife met Henry at cinemacon a few years back and said he was delightful and very nice.
IIRC this is a fake story, the nephew said something along those lines, but Henry Cavill didn't accompany him to school.
He popped in I think. Not drop him off but say something about it

If you’re not a trivia fan, would its health benefits change your mind? There are all sorts of neurological and emotional benefits to trivia. Let’s start with the fact that it can be good for your brain. Psychologist Deborah Stokes, Ph.D., L.P.C., B.C.N. told Healthline that “retaining information about things we’re interested in can be like exercise for the frontal cortex as the brain ages.”
And the lyrics don't mean "if you don't have a girlfriend you won't cry"; they're about consoling a woman who is upset, and that's pretty sweet too!
Yes, part of the lyrics are…”everything’s gonna be all right… don’t shed no tears…” to me he’s saying (to paraphrase) …”darling, don’t cry”. It’s nice. The whole song is.

There was a case where a Coast Guard Auxillary Air Patrol pilot chose to crash his plane into trees rather than try to land because the only field was being used by Children to play on at the time, and if he didnt get the plane down right away he would be over a residential area. Jesus, I'm legit crying at so many of these. It really goes to show how amazing humans can be!
We all want to think we'd do the same, but I'm not gonna lie, in the heat of the moment I'm not sure I would. What a hero.
Some things are so unbelievable. I hate to think any of these stories are made up. Because miracles really do happen right?
They do, something similar was in our Welsh news recently. Literally a chance encounter lead to a live organ Donation

As a double lung transplant recipient, I totally agree with you. I NEVER smoked and believe it or not this was my first surgery (60 years-old). PLEASE PLEASE be an organ donor. You can save 8 lives by checking the box on your driver's license. PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR ORGANS TO HEAVEN, GOD KNOWS THAT WE NEED THEM HERE!

Trivia is also a great social activity that gets you out of the house and meeting new people. The same Healthline article points out that trivia nights offer a rare (and usually, hopefully, quite strictly enforced) opportunity to put our phones down and spend some time with people face-to-face. Indeed, taking your phone out may get you penalized for cheating!
Again, RIP to our Reno who died this week at 13. He served in Afghanistan as a bomb.dog. My wife’s daughter was his handler. Army wanted to put him down at age 10. We took him for three amazing years. I’ve cried more for this dog than any human I’ve known who died. Now I get it!

I don't see why it wouldn't be unpopular. Race and colour *does* exist, and yes, some humans might tend to naturally feel more comfortable with people who look more like them. I think the point of this post is that, while they will comprehend these obvious and undeniable differences, they won't actually develop *negative* bias per se until a parent or other person projects that onto them.
Load More Replies...When i see stuff like that about kids i aways think the writers have bad memory. I mean, have you ever been a kid? They are the most selfish, cruel, jerk bullies. They crush anyone who is different in any possible form, and have to be thought otherwise. Or maybe my experiences were just worse than most, and these people don't have kids.
Oh no doubt kids can be horrible, but not when they're little - they may say things that come across as hurtful but it's just them being honest - pointing out someone is maybe fat, or bald, or has a big nose - it's just what they see. The nasty, cruel behaviour that follows later is very much learned through so many different places. My oldest kid I had to ban from the bloody Disney channel, watching the tv shows on that gave her such an attitude that she copied from the characters, it was pretty eye opening! Then there's the mob mentality of it all. My kids have, thankfully, all stayed mostly very kind people. I've always taught them being nice to people is important, but not all parents are nice people to or around their kids, which creates mean kids, it's all they know.
Load More Replies...So true! I don't understand racism. I did not know what racism was, until I had to move to the south as a child. Not saying everyone in the south is racist. Just to clear that up. People are people, everyone should treat others the same as they want to be treated. Unless you're an a*s, then you get what you deserve
Kids are innocent and just accept what is - they ask simple questions and accept the answer. I remember my oldest asking why a kid had brown skin when she was in nursery and I just explained people can look different, just like people have different eye colours, hair colour etc that peoples skin are different colours too and comes from who they're related to. That's was that. Same when I was a kid, I remember finding out some things were actually derogatory names for certain races and I was absolutely disgusted and I haven't uttered the words since finding out. It never made sense to me that physical differences should make any difference as to how you feel about someone. My simple mantra in life is don't be a d**k, if folk are nice then I like them, if they're not I don't like them, but I'm still nice to them because I am not a d**k. Simple
When I was a little kid we had one black (as in African black, not Aboriginal black) kid in my class (thanks to super racist immigration policies in Australia at that time, this was not unusual). I remember very clearly what my reaction to seeing him was, and it was curiosity. That's all. Curiosity and interest because he looked different, before I got used to it and stopped noticing. He ended up becoming popular because he was the fastest runner in our class, and I don't remember anyone ever giving him a hard time for being black.
Because adults are lazy pudding heads, and children are cruel, spiteful little things. We must model appropriate behavior for them to copy.
Load More Replies...Good to know there are still good people in TN. After seeing what the Far Right has done to the State, Congress, & tried to do to Nashville, I was afraid such a wonderful part of the country had gone to H.
If there weren’t any good people, the Tennessee Three wouldn’t have gotten elected. The two that were ejected also wouldn’t have been reinstated. The other reps are now doing everything they can to punish those two cities (one of which happens to be my home), but we won’t back down. What’s right is right.
Load More Replies...I read this back when it happened and today it still makes me smile. I almost went there and kind of regret it now!
However, the experts in Healthline’s article also warned about the potential pitfalls of an unhealthy approach to trivia. For some people, trivia can become an obsession where they can’t accept having any holes in their knowledge about a given subject.
Oh, I thought the reporter wanted to see the old man "reach loo", but then I realized it was supposed to be "reach 100".
This is attributed to Winston Churchill when he was in his eighties. Obviously the story's been changed to make it a centenarian.
Better than sitting in the middle of the road with a tube of super glue and a sign
Disagree completely. Protest and raising awareness are just as important as direct action. This woman can plant a million trees, and it's all worthless if the government lets a logging company come in and destroy them all.

I can't help but notice they appear to be upside down? My oldest always drew something on my hand when I was going to work when she was little so I could have hugs if I ever missed her, what I'd give for her to do that again!
John Kounios, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, told Healthline that “this can motivate a person to the point at which they collect information about that topic compulsively. This might be called the ‘collect them all’ phenomenon. People collect facts about a topic the way a stamp collector collects stamps. The more, and the rarer, the better.”
“Some people are compulsive about gathering information on a topic,” he added in their article. “It’s only a problem if they’re ignoring other things in their lives.”
the struggle is real! i'm no one without my glasses, but i hope one day i put them on and find i won a golden medal too

Load More Replies...Reminds me of the story of that mommy cat who did the same, burning herself to get all of her kittens out of a burning building. No matter if human or not, everyone's a superhero when it comes to saving their beloved ones
Didn't say third degree, just that she had burn injuries to 93% of her body - I'm thinking that while she will have some more severe burns that it couldn't possibly be all third degree burns as I'm not sure that is survivable - I think around 50% at third degree is often fatal given the risks of infections on top of the trauma. Amazing woman though, I'd do everything I could to save my kids but you never know what you're capable of until you're in that situation. This lady has my utmost respect

Universal healthcare should be just that, and free.

We have come a long way since the early 90s, when HIV was more or less a certain death sentence. The 90s AIDS scare was for a reason. It really WAS that dangerous before the first treatments were discovered. Today it isn't even contagious if probably medicated, and, at least in countries with a good public health system, a minor nuisance. It continues to be a huge problem in countries were people do not have access to proper medical care, so a vaccine really could be a gamechanger.
It would be great if they at least mentioned the name of the study. This statement that the trial agent "proves successful in 97% of the participants" is strange for a Phase 1 study, which looks primarily at safety and mechanisms for administering the therapy (oral, intravenous, etc). This is the domain I work in, and I have not heard of this so-called "landmark HIV vaccine study". It makes me wonder if someone confused the old data from PrEP trials. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) does have an efficacy rate of between 93% and 99% in preventing infection with HIV when taken as directed. But it is not a vaccine; you must continue to take PrEP daily throughout the time you are at risk for acquiring HIV. You can find the latest information about HIV vaccine trials at the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (https://www.hvtn.org), and learn more about PrEP at https://tinyurl.com/PrEPUSA or https://tinyurl.com/PrepEurope
Thank you for the info. It is good to get an objective opinion from someone who understands a complex field
Load More Replies...I'm guessing this will not be covered by insurance in the US, and cost $200k.
I don't know how folk in America aren't rioting in the streets over their rip off "healthcare"
Load More Replies...It means getting closer to getting rid of a disease, so they probably hate it. Getting death threats just for working somewhere that gives free vaccinations REALLY has not improved my thoughts on anti-vaxxers.
Load More Replies...Finally!! I did an HIV vaccine trial 20 years ago. It's so sad that we still don't have one approved. I didn't get a placebo, had no negative known side effects.
Phase 1 does not test efficacy though. That it gives a response does not mean it will protect...
This is false, the op must be mistaken. No HIV vaccines have made it to the clinical trial stage, the virus evolves too fast.

Well yeah. Dogs will give you unconditional love and friendship, they're not deliberately malicious, etc. Humans have and still do terrible things to other humans; you never have to guess if a dog has ulterior motives.
Weeellll... Mine will snuggle up, dilate his pupils to look sweet, and then direct me to the treat canister.

I watch a lot of true crime and this was proven true when in one case this scumbag killed his wife and also his two young children and OH MY GOD WHAT?! HE KILLED THE FAMILY DOG?? YOU MONSTER! Poor Breezy. He got done for three counts of first degree intentional homicide and one count of animal cruelty.

She has had 3 babies -- 2 have survived: Tahlequah (born c. 1998), also known as J35, is a killer whale of the Southern Resident community in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. She has given birth to three known offspring, a male (Notch) in 2010, a female (Tali) in 2018, and another male (Phoenix) in 2020. Her second calf, Tali, died shortly after birth and J35 carried her body for 17 days in an apparent show of grief that attracted international attention.
Why do we insist that animals aren't sentient? I think it's so we can do bad things to them with out feeling any guilt or shame. Same reason racists insist other people are not 100% human.
No... 😭 I am happy she is pregnant and I hope so much that the new calf doesn't die.
A good thing to do, but all of it went to slave owners, the people who were enslaved received nothing.
They may not have received a cash payment but they received their freedom.
Load More Replies...The timeline of repayment quoted here is misleading. Whilst the initial cost of £20m in 1833 was colossal at the time (equivalent to £155billion today) it did not take until 2014 to repay. The reason this urban myth exists is the outstanding debt in the early 20th century was merged with a new debt, which in turn was merged with subsequent new debts. This meant the original debt was constantly being diluted abd the repayment schedule extended. The loan in question was not officially marked as cleared until 2014. But, in real terms 99% of it it was repaid by the 1920s. It was not a case of the loan being so large it too nearly 200yrs to repay.
It took 'Murica 32 more years to abolish slavery. Shall we sweep under the carpet that slavery continued in the States long past the War of Independence and was the main cause of the civil war. Then to add insult to injury, they implemented segregation and the dreadful Jim Crow laws. "Separate but equal". No country has the moral high ground in any of this debate and finger pointing achieves nothing.
Right, let's s**t on Britain for not living up to 2023 standards 200 years ago.
For those who think paying off the slave owners and holding to a moral absolute about the subject would have been better: had they not been paid, the slaveholders would have violently revolted, and many probably would have killed their slaves rather than free them. And new law or no new law, they would have had the ability to do so. And the government would not have had the wherewithal to hold them accountable for it in the middle of riots and revolts. Paying them off saved lives.
The ending of the British slave trade, that is. Not the end of the Middle East trade or the child slave trade in various parts of the world.
This would totally happen in the U.S. And for a graduation gift they'd probably even get her a cool gift, like a bill for expenses with a 25% interest rate - compounded since Kindergarten, of course.

I wouldn't call myself rich, but around here, public transportation is almost non-existent. It's gotten better over the last few decades, but a car is still a necessity.
Load More Replies...In the US auto manufacturers and oil companies lobby against the development of public transport in major cities to keep the sale of cars higher... and win... repeatedly. That's why there's no major train system and many very large cities lack efficient bussing programs - so the rich can get richer and politicians can afford to stay in power.
You can lay that blame squarely on local politicians. they are more interested in a photo op or virtue signaling than the actual safety of passengers, reliability and cleanliness.
Load More Replies...Used to live in larger cities and did fine without cars. SO much easier to use metro, trams, etc, hop on, hop off, no parking problems, etc.. Have spent most of my working life (in IT, good salary) using public transport. My boss actually paid for it. Now I live in a village with less public transport but take my bike to reach the trains. My car does not get much of a workout.
I live in my state capital but we're such a spread out country that even though we have public transport and I live in the biggest city in my state I still need to use a car to get to places. Otherwise I'd be spending a fortune on taxis or ubers. We also need to normalise transporting pets using public transport (including taxis/ubers) because at the moment it's not allowed. And that's before considering visiting family who live in towns/cities that have no way to get to via public transport.

It‘s a double bus. Not sure what they are called in english. Not a double decker like the famouse red ones in London. It‘s like two busses behind each other. Edit: a normal bus in Germany can have 120 passangers

You still have massive heards in Botswana, to the point their goverment gives elephants to other countries and still has to do cullings to prevent overpopulation. Years ago they adopted some brilliant but contraversal methods for helping their elephant population, and it worked
That's not the point. Just because there's somewhat massive herds in one part of the world, it doesn't mean that all areas aren't being poached. 99% of the world isn't having that same issue. Like... wtf? Also nobody should be culling wild animals. They're doing it for the sake of humans. Not because it's what's best for the animal. The plant balances itself. Humans demolish it.

Load More Replies...No drama there, though. It was just the time for Finlands parliamentary elections. We elected another party as the biggest party, and the rule is, that the prime minister comes from that party. Sanna Marins party actually increased their support%, but another party inreased their support more, becoming the biggest party. Finland has multiple parties, so this is common. Another characteristic in Finnish political field is that the parties in government typically lose support while parties in opposition taise their support in the next elections. Actually as of now Sanna Marins government is still working as the caretaker government, so Marin is still the caretaker prime minister until the next government is ready to take on the responsibility. What she really resigned from is from being the leader of her party, because she was exhausted from her Prime minister term, and wanted to do something else. She is still a regular member of the parliament and highly popular.

"Boy needs to donate prize money for medical treatment because universal healthcare isn't a thing" - Sounds less heartwarming but is more on point
This is a dystopia, not a feel-good story. The little girls medical expenses should have been paid for by healthcare.
In many countries around the world (including my own) the chemo would be free as a matter of course. It's a lovely gesture from that little boy but how sad it was required.

Do you know what I would have GIVEN just for the CHANCE to have had my father walk me down the aisle? ANYTHING. Giving your daughter away is a tradition that no longer means "I own this female but I am now giving her to you to own, groom." It's not the 1800s any more. Now for some people, it's just a lovely tradition to honor your father. I would have been honored to have had my father, whom I loved dearly, to walk me down the aisle. Load More Replies...4 months... I am honestly not sure how I feel about this. Nice for the children to live, but the woman being solely an incubator... I guess I can understand not wanting to lose them too. But how about allowing someone to die? Really not sure - yes, lives were saved, but is it respectful to the dying/braindead woman? Is it ethical?
I'm happy with this situation. The mother was going to die, however, by delaying her death by 4 months, her children were able to live. It was a choice between three deaths, or just the one. There has been some talk about using the wombs of comatosed or brain dead patients and implanting them with fertilised eggs. This is incredibly different from allowing a mother to protect and nurture her own babies until they were able to survive.
Load More Replies...I wonder if there was paperwork stating the woman's preferences. Maybe she knew she was going to die and specifically asked to be kept alive until her babies were born?
So they should have discontinued life support and just let two healthy fetuses die? Deprive the husband of his wife AND his unborn children in one fell swoop? Do you think the woman, if she had not been injured, would be okay with that? I'm pro-choice and I don't even consider unborn fetuses as "people" the way that pro-life people do, but I still think that it was the right decision to allow these fetuses the chance to be born. Their mother was already "gone"... her body was there, but her mind and "soul" was already gone. There's nothing "icky" about this - the woman was not coerced or forced or abused. The doctors gave her exquisite care, and even sung and played music in her hospital bed in order to "show" the unborn babies that they were loved.
