Load More Replies...Located in Siberia, Lake Baikal is natural wonder known for its crystalline-colored waters. It is the largest freshwater lake on the planet by volume, containing approximately 20 percent of the Earth’s freshwater, and it is the oldest lake in the world at about 25 million years old. Lake Baikal is considered one of the clearest bodies of water on Earth because when it freezes during the winter, large shards of transparent ice form on its surface, making it appear turquoise.
Why your not top comment I don't know, but thank you for the information. I love learning new things and this was very informative xx
Load More Replies...Every time I see this type of coloring in ice it makes me want to lick it. I saw an image of water that looked like this in some mountain and I immediately wanted to bottle it and drink it. It just looks so clean and clear.
It's really cool, but reminds me of those gross jelly mints they have in a bowl at the hostess stand of a diner. jelly-mint...a3b6d2.jpg
Lol, spot on! But those are delicious... if you can get past the communal germ-bowl notion 😝
Load More Replies...It’s no secret that people are growing more distant from nature in today's world. Foraging expert and author Diego Bonetto, whose excellent book “Eat Weeds, a field guide to foraging: how to identify, harvest and use wild plants” educates people how to engage with wild food sources, transforming your neighborhood into an edible adventure, believes that it comes down to the fact that we are all very distracted.
Bonetto, who is an Italian native and has lived in Australia since the mid-1990s, where he spends his time guiding novices, chefs, and other professionals through the parks and outskirts of Sydney looking for hidden-in-plain-sight ingredients, explained: “So many things to do, so many things to watch, hear, experience, listen to, and hardly any of them are in or connected to nature.”
“Even when we go out in a park,” he argues, “or on a walk in the forest, we are often distracted and not present.”

I have these in my garden too after spotting them in a local garden centre last year. They're stunning!
Load More Replies...I think I've seen these advertised on Thompson and Morgan website, but they are based in the UK.

If the weird stuff is up there, what is the stuff down there like?
Load More Replies...We have 'commom groundsel' around us, aka ragwort. It's crazy to think this is from the same genus.
Yes! And the first thing I thought was "No way!". I love to be proved wrong on stuff like this though (although these aren't at the top of the mountain, about 5,000' below the peak) more pics and info here: https://www.thomsontreks.com/blog/kilimanjaro-giant-groundsels/.
Load More Replies...I’m guessing mt. Kilimanjaro was so high up that a couple seeds of those things were able to survive the meteor
Woah... Those are amazingly unique. I've never seen anything like that.
According to Bonetto, “we have created a fast-paced world of instant gratification and technological distraction and seem to be forgetting all the simple things like smelling a flower, tasting a berry, being awestruck at how birds fly in the sky.”
Foraging for wild edibles can provide a great avenue to re-engage with nature, and you get free food in return, Bonetto argues. “It forces you to look, seek out, pay attention to shapes and colors, seasons and cycles. It fosters a new way to connect to your neighborhood, or local fields and forests, as you can progressively build a map of treasured colonies, trees and bushes, that you can come back to visit and look out for.”
Moreover, foraging turns you into a stakeholder for your local ecology, and that fosters care and connection.
Aren't they cute? I have a hognose snake named Hoggle. He's my little grumpy noodle!♥️♥️♥️

Load More Replies...It's a Brown Long-Eared bat from the UK, and the ears are just as big on the adults! https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/mammals/brown-long-eared-bat
Load More Replies...Yet, they make no sound at all as they approach their prey. I saw an experiment somewhere - YouTube I guess - with what was I believe a hawk, another predator bird (can't recall) and an owl. Last one was soundless!
Can confirm. When we were building our house the Great Horned Owls in the area weren't happy with all the activity and would sometimes swoop down from behind and then hoot loudly as they were flying over us just barely above our heads. Even in the absolute quiet of a desert night you couldn't hear them at all until they yelled. It was startling as heck! Happily, the owls settled down after we finished construction and they often use our property as their gathering spot at dusk before heading out to hunt. They sit in the trees and hoot owlish gossip to each other for about 20 minutes, then one by one silently swoop out of the trees and off on their nighttime rounds.
Load More Replies...Even little things like a walk in the park can have tremendous benefits on our mental health. Science backs up these benefits.
“People have been discussing their profound experiences in nature for the last several 100 years—from Thoreau to John Muir to many other writers,” researcher David Strayer of the University of Utah argues. “Now we are seeing changes in the brain and changes in the body that suggest we are physically and mentally more healthy when we are interacting with nature.”
This is an African rain frog. This one looks sad. Others can look like an angry avocado.
If anybody needs an adorable video to cheer themselves up today, I give you the cute noises of the dessert rain frog which looks incredibly like the little guy in this photograph: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBkWhkAZ9ds
OMG, I totally needed that! It sounded like a squeaky toy. Insanely adorable 😍
Load More Replies...I know that look. I have my cup all ready and someone left about a teaspoon of juice in the carton.
I didn't even realize it until you mentioned. It does look Escher-esque.
Load More Replies...In one recent experiment conducted in Japan, participants were assigned to walk either in a forest or in an urban center (taking walks of equal length and difficulty) while having their heart rate variability, heart rate, and blood pressure measured. The participants also filled out questionnaires about their moods, stress levels, and other psychological measures.
Results showed that those who walked in forests had significantly lower heart rates and higher heart rate variability (indicating more relaxation and less stress), and reported better moods and less anxiety, than those who walked in urban settings.
I feel like there's a brainteaser about this... Is there a scorpion on the other side of the bank?
Creepy, isn't it? This is particularly so as snapdragons are delicate and pretty flowers.
And as a child I loved to squeeze them to make them "talk" so this makes perfect sense that they are tiny creepy skulls
Load More Replies...Fairy skulls! I do remember playing with snapdragons as a kid. We used to make "their mouths" open and shut. I don't remember seeing their seed pods, however. Don't think I could forget them!
I had 1 student in Horticulture class for an entire year one year. She was a goth kid and we grew these because of the seed pods and she painted the most phenomenal art work on a terracotta pot to plant them in.
Scientists believe that being in nature offers a different kind of beneficial effect in reducing stress, which may be even stronger than the one produced by exercise alone.
Moreover, in a series of experiments published in 2014, Juyoung Lee, GGSC director Dacher Keltner, and other researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, looked at the potential impact of nature on the willingness to be generous, trusting, and helpful toward others, while considering what factors might influence that relationship.
After being exposed to the more beautiful nature scenes, participants acted more generously and more trusting in the games than those who saw less beautiful scenes, and the effects appeared to be due to corresponding increases in positive emotion.
I have serious arachnophobia, but those little feet are pretty darn cute
Me too, I had to scroll quickly before my brain caught up!
Load More Replies...sadly, probably not... they need them to be bean free to shoot out webs like silly string.
Load More Replies...Those feet are fine, as long as they come separately from the eight legged NOPE.
All I can hear is the (fabulous) songTiny Dancer when I look at this picture! 😆
I'd say more rabbits considering kangaroos are probably supposed to eat them.
Kangaroo numbers are artificially high in many areas because of the provision of artificial water sources for livestock. Because of this, they can cause significant grazing damage (although admittedly the feral horses and the rabbits are far worse).
Load More Replies...That's quite incredible. I had no idea there even was a bloody supply...
compare horse hooves with human fingernails - it’s not that inaccurate!
Load More Replies...They don't, unless they're subjected to hard surfaces. Poking nail holes in the hoof wall only weakens it.
Load More Replies...I saw this at a science/art exhibit depicting animals stripped down to just their blood vessels.
Was it the "Bodyworlds" exhibition by Gunther Von Hagens? Saw that in London and it was amazing. He calls the process "plastination".
Load More Replies...I can't imagine knowing how to clean and manicure a horse hoof! I'm amazed by furriers who can do horseshoes and upkeep without hurting them!
I'm sorry, your auto correct probably changed your word from farrier to furrier. They go to school to learn the art, and have worldwide competitions!
Load More Replies...If you think this is horrifying, then don't Google baby horse hooves.
Load More Replies...But although the benefits of being in nature are obvious, people’s disconnection from nature has been growing rapidly. A recent study conducted by professors Selin Kesebir and Pelin Kesebir uncovered a shrinking of nature in our collective imagination and cultural conversation. They looked at millions of fiction books, thousands of songs, and hundreds of thousands of movie and documentary storylines.
What they found was that nature features significantly less in popular culture today than it did in the first half of the 20th century, with a steady decline after the 1950s. In fact, for every three nature-related words in the popular songs of the 1950s, for example, there is only slightly more than one 50 years later.
There's a place in Mallows Bay where there's a whole fleet of these. It's where they took all of their unfinished ships at the end of WWI and dumped them.
I immediately thought of Mallows Bay, too. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where this pic came from. Excellent kayaking.
Load More Replies...I'll bet there is some good fishing here. We used to throw our used Christmas trees in our pond, not artifical trees of course, and the bass would bed in them.

errybody doing the "nope" thing here, and i get it. i understand. i'm not a spider person either. but can we just take a moment to recognize and appreciate the majestic brilliance of spiders and their indomitable survival instinct? there are likely ALL types of spiders in those cocoons, spiders who in peace times are mortal enemies and predator/prey. but when it came to SURVIVAL, they put that b******t aside and webbed themselves together into those trees. to SURVIVE. ... if only humans were capable of that kinda beautiful selflessness and understanding of the bigger picture. SURVIVAL.

Load More Replies...Yes. Also, it might carry parasites and viruses, so it should be handled with care and sanitation. It’s cute tho
Load More Replies...It's a trick if perspective, it appears as if she is holding the snail close and it's as big as her body. But look at the size of the hand, nobody has a hand longer than the width of their body. Therefore the hand and snail must be much closer to the camera than the person.
Even then, I didn't know snails could get as big as a hand. Neat!
Load More Replies...I really want one of these, but I would get in sooo much trouble if I got caught in my country with one. They are adorably destructive.
And rightly so! On a personal level I agree about the cuteness factor
Load More Replies...Unfortunately this image was debunked as fake some time ago. While giant African snails get big, they don't quite get to this size...
Adults of the species Achatina achatina average about 18cm shell length, and can measure as much as 30cm (1 foot). I have large hands for a woman, and my hand is around 18cm long. This is a perfectly believable size for a snail.

Woah dude! The colors. Jokes aside, this is wonderful. What a beautiful, magical World we have ❤️ ❤️
I was asked to cut down about 25-30 dead trees and 3 of the trees had woodpecker's in them so i refused to cut the trees with them in it or the surrounding trees because they are cool birds. The owner of the place respected me for that. To this day the dead trees and birds are still there. They have beautiful colours. The birds not the trees !!
No wonder Woody was always laughing … he was tickling his own brain! Haha haha ha haha haha ha hahahahahahaha!

this is one of the most interesting flowers ive seen, aside from the ones in this post
Anguloa uniflora, not Hydnora africana (a parasitic plant commonly called jackal food).
Don't want to sound pedantic, but it looks more like a type of orchid than a tulip species.

Ah a common occurrence down here in Louisiana you ever been jugging for catfish at night and seen these guys
A good friend from Florida has told me some crazy stories about these guys. To me this looks like a lake full of Nope! Pretty though
Load More Replies...Love these little guys, my fruit/nut/palm trees are covered in them when they flower making the trees quite literally buzz. Yes they don't have a sting, they can bite but they are so small it does nothing, they are quite friendly little cuties and make great honey.
I don't think they make as much honey as their stinging counterparts and probably wouldn't do well in other climates.
Load More Replies...So the Africanized bee crosses continents and oceans, but the stingless bee is content to stay put where it's at. That's messed up.
Well we brought the Africanized bees with us deliberately...

Isn't this the tree that "ble*ds"? Why show this cool tree, without showing its most awesome feature?
They aren't related. The baobab is from the "mallows" family and the dragon blood tree belongs to the "asparagus" family.
Load More Replies...Dragon's Blood incense...Dragon’s Blood is associated with the element of Fire and can be used in any rituals linked to that element. Load More Replies...My goats will climb branches and houses they are a little crazy sometimes
Load More Replies...Stupid Harold. ("It's my studied opinion that they're roosting.")
i'm gonna be the downer here - went here saw the goats in the trees - was disappointed to learn that even though it is a natural talent of these goats - their "handlers" herd them up the trees for the tourists and they have to stay up there for long periods of time and the goat guys do want money for you stopping by to see this. i did not like much about Morocco sorry to say.
goats can climb on anything as long as it is above a 90 degree angle (Ex. 92)
No matter where in the world you go, goats just give gravity the finger.
I love bees. I try to propagate flowers that they would like, and I follow them around in the garden. They are fascinating.
From here on out, I have honeybee thighs. It sounds way better than saddlebags.
If I saw that in a forest, I'd be running away in the opposite direction. I'm not that curious a person.
They don’t smell great, so I usually keep away too.

I love all bats, but the giant flying fox is my favorite! flying-fox...94b1ca.jpg
I learned yesterday from the National Trust with Alan Titchmarsh show that over in the UK, NT holds the title of being the host of the largest number of roosts, over 10,000. The main property highlighted was a Cistercian monastery, and they interviewed a bat conservationist as he caught and tagged them, amazing.
I think it's kind of beautiful. They're forever at home, watching over it.
Load More Replies...There's a lake in Olympic National Park where people are saponified (turned to soap).
ok for the bat (they can sleep in this position, the photo is upside down) but birds die like that ?
These pictures were taken by a photographer who placed the corpses in positions to make it look like they just froze there. They weren't originally in the pictures shown.
Load More Replies...Awwww but they look so pretty, is there any for buying just wondering- I love to collect fish in resin
This is an artist's exhibition.I hate when the wrong "facts" go around time and time again.

I‘ve seen this so often now. Does anyone know if it is dangerous to swim there? Is there a downward pull or something?
It’s not a deep hole, it’s an optical illusion. It won’t pull you down but it will definitely pull you out. Always swim perpendicular to the shore kids!

As far as I know they are only edible while they are young (I already added them to a mixed mushroom dish). Once they open and start dissolving you can't eat them anymore.

Although the Platypus and Echidna look totally different, their skeletons have surprising similarities. The duck bill of the platypus is the same structure as the snout of the echidna. And if look at Miocene fossil skulls, the Echidna had a noticeably broader snout, looking closer to a duck-bill.
The only venomous mammal (along with its closest relative, the Echidna AKA the Spiny Anteater). Do I need to bother mentioning what continent it's from?
We‘ve just seen a couple of these. They are so cool to watch. It‘s supposed to bring good luck if they nest on your house.
These birds are so cool. We have them were I live and they are excellent at catching fish. Bald Eagles however are not as good as they are so often I will see a Bald eagle chasing an Osprey that has just caught a fish until the osprey drops its and the Bald Eagle snatches it out of the air. By the way Bald eagles are cool too.
We had them where we used to live too. Would eat fish on the dock. Could always pick out their cries pretty unique. Claws are pretty impressive in person

Are they safe to be in the water with? There's a person in there with them.
Best to stay away from these things unless we want to start The Last Of Us.

That's the first time I've read that a flower parasitized a fungus. Normally it was always the other way around so...Go little flower! :D
Many plants in the family Ericaceae (Monotropoideae sub-family in particular) are parasites in that they have no chlorophyll of their own, and instead live off of other plants, or by drawing nutrients from soil fungus, which by association gets its carbohydrates from other plants. Mycorrhizal fungi and their interactions with plants is a fascinating subject to study.

When I was a kid, I remember netting a jellyfish at the beach once, and there was a tiny little fish inside.
I think I’ll pass, thanks. I’ve had enough hecking Nope for the day.
I know I speak for all of us when I say, “Hey, look! A big freaky hole in the planet! I should stand there!”
Seriously. Not only a big freaky hole but a big freaky hole filled with icy water. You will not catch me anywhere near 100 feet radius of that thing.

Be sure to gather icicles before the battle, they will be your only weapons.

Did anyone check if that's REALLY a wood carving? If not, they should check, someone should. Not me, someone else should.
Of course those little critters have to claim all the coolest wins: oldest animal on Earth, most badāss eggs.
They can survive space and invade other planets...

Omg! I couldn't stand those bumble balls. My brother bought one for my daughter when she was a toddler and that thing drove me absolutely crazy. She only seemed to play with it when her infant brother was trying to sleep. 😵

You're absolutely right. Silk cottons can be found in SE Asia but they're a smaller cousin of those found in Mexico and central America. And from my personal experience, the ones in the Americas had this amazing spine covered bark (like in Costa Rica); the Tetramelea I saw in Cambodia were smooth and covered in giant ants!

Load More Replies...They are called elk in Europe, and moose in North America.

But does he use those powers for good where he'll decimates āsshole visitors in N.American parks that can't read signs to stay on trails and not to litter? Or are the powers used for evil where he attacks and murders other moose so he can eat their velvet too and grow stronger and stronger until no mammal can stop him!?!
Both elk and moose shed their antlers and grow new ones yearly. This photo is of a moose. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/animals-antlers-moose-seasons-mating
Elk and Moose is the same animal just that we call them Elks in Europe.
Load More Replies...The elk and moose might be two different species, but they all belong to the same family. In Europe, the word elk is used to refer to the moose (Alces alces) whereas Wapiti (Cervus Canadensis) is used for elk: https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/what-is-the-difference-between-moose-and-elk.html
I've also attached a picture of difference velvet shedding in (North American named) moose, deer & elk for those curious about the difference;) north-amer...6b8df0.jpg
It does itch. Hence, one of the reasons they rub it against trees.

It seems orchids are winning in the weird category. There are so many examples here.
