Underdog’s Long Road to Justice
The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is still being done in most gameshows. When the producers think you suck or don't relate to the viewers, they make it harder for you to win.

Not in the US. There was a quiz show scandal based on the producers fixing the results. Helping some contestants and hindering others. A law was passed that if a TV station broadcasts a show where the producers manipulated the results, they lose their broadcast license for 3 years. 2000 affiliates aren't going to risk their license over Jeopardy so the shows are very closely monitored by both the networks and the government. When a guy nailed the price of the final showcase on "The Price is Right", the show was immediately shut down so they could investigate. Turns out the guy had watched the show way too much and memorized the prices of almost every prize. He got the exact amount by adding his anniversary date to the end of a round number. When the show came back, every prize is subtlety altered so the price is never the same. A different interior package is on a car or the retail price on the bag of noodles is from a Krogers in San Diego instead of an Tesco in London.

She's more famously known in the US as Dr. Joyce Brothers (married name). As a psychologist she campaigned for the normalization of talking about mental health. She was the first psychologist to get their own TV talk show(s). One of the things she was famous for was forcing her network to keep broadcasting her show live for over 3 hours while she was talking to someone contemplating suicide to keep them from doing it. Until her death, every major network immediately had her on after a national tragedy (Reagan getting shot, space shuttle blowing up, Columbine shooting, etc) to have her help a nation grieve. She publicly addressed transgender rights in the 1950s. After Stonewall Inn happened in 1969, she became a leading advocate that homosexuality is not a mental illness and helped normalize it for the American people.

They knew she knew all about boxing (it was her specialist topic agreed before the show; the producers thought a charismatic women who knew about a masculine topic like boxing would be a ratings winner), the question they tried to stump her with at $16,000 was about referees rather than boxers.

They were trying to make everyone fail, each question was build as multiple questions which you had to get all of them right. The show runners never thought they would pay anyone. However, the way the show worked, they would send them a stack of books the week before and then they will get questions about those books. Every week a different topic and different books, so it is not a question of her prior knowledge but her ability to memorize facts and read thru the material. Very hard show to beat, harder than the ones you see in TV today.

After winning, she 'scrubbed' her memory of all the otherwise useless facts she'd memorized in order to win (her field was boxing, I think). When it was revealed that some shows were rigged, she was immediately suspected. So she memorized that c**p all over again and passed the interrogation with flying colors.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of examples of people being jerks during the 50s regarding women -- but this most probably isn't one of them. She won in the category of boxing, which she was allowed to select. The producers did not want anyone to win beyond $16,000, so questions would get tougher in all cases. She simply overcame when others did not.

Gloria Lockerman at age 12 became one of the most famous people in the U.S. after spelling ''antidisestablishmentarianism" on the $64,000 Question Show. There was a slightly racist aspect to people`s fascination with her: This was before the civil rights movement gained momentum, and Gloria Lockerman was black. Her brilliance was in direct contrast to many Americans` stereotypes of Black people, and there is no question that in countless living rooms, amazement was expressed not only that a girl of her age could spell the word, but that a girl of her color could do it.

As others have noted, this is Dr. Joyce Brothers, one of the first "media shrinks." Her appearances on $64KQ won her notoriety for being a person who'd appeared on television. Second, her category was prizefighting. She memorized all the bouts and stats, and cleaned up on the quiz show. Then the scandals hit, and the good doctor had to re-study all the material so she could answer questions by congressional investigators, which she did. There's never been even a hint that Dr. Brothers was a participant in the scandals. I'd occasionally see her in midtown Manhattan, and she'd have two or three inches of gray hair below the blonde.

Why yes... yes it is Dr Joyce Brothers. Not only did she beat them at their own game but she parlayed her fame from this into becoming a very famous TV personality for decades afterwards. She died in 2013. Talk about a life well lived...

They didn't try to make her lose because she was a woman, at least not directly. She was not drawing in viewers and The $64,000 Question was losing the ratings war each time she appeared on the show. So they tried to get her off so they could get the next contestant in. The $64,000 Question was a rigged show and they coached popular contestants to keep them coming back, while trying to stump those that were unpopular.

Joyce Diane? Really? She went on to become Dr. Joyce Brothers. They didn't dislike her for being a woman -- she was not the first woman champion -- but for refusing to wear makeup. (Obviously, she did sometimes.) The show was financed by makeup advertisements. She was never named Joyce Diane; her maiden name was Joyce Bauer; Diane was her middle name.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

Charlie Brown and Franz Stiegler: The B-17 was heavily damaged and going down, but Brown was able to get it stable again. The german air field commander said that any pilot who shoots at parachutes will be executed, and Stiegler considered the barely flying plane as parachute. He flew so close the the machine that the AA batteries couldn't shoot without hitting Stiegler, and he signaled Brown to land - which he refused. Stiegler decided to escort them out of the hostile air space

The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.

Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
