30 Times People Would’ve Rather Had Plates And Glasses Instead Of These Disasters (New Pics)
Let me tell you, when your mashed potato gets served in a glass vase or your soup is poured in a stiletto, you’re at a crossroads. One one hand, you can call the absurdity out, complain to your waiter but don’t expect much. After all, if that restaurant is guilty of anything, then it’s trying hard to impress you. Another option is to ignore the serving and enjoy its content, but that would end in a strong longing for simple life where plates are a thing.
However, such try-hard food servings seem to be everywhere and it’s become impossible to ignore them. And the internet’s beloved project “We Want Plates” is a safe space to talk about hard things, aka the plate drought in restaurants.
According to their website, it’s “the global crusade against serving food on bits of wood and roof slates, chips in mugs and drinks in jam jars.” It’s also home to an impressive collection of some of the craziest, most wondrous, and ‘what is dat thing?’-kinda food servings people encountered.
Psst! More pics of, let’s be honest, barely edible craziness can be found in our previous posts with “We Want Plates” here, here and here.

Getting your soup served in a stiletto is bonkers, no doubt about that. But have you noticed that those super fancy, very detailed, often bizarre food servings come from luxurious restaurants? I mean let’s be honest, your local Chinese takeaway couldn’t care less about putting that sweet & sour curry in anything other than a plastic container. Do you complain about them not being elaborate enough? Well, probably not. So why, then, is it so frustrating when restaurants are genuinely trying to stand out and make us impressed? Now this is some food for thought.

Fancy restaurants are also notorious for serving small portions. A walnut-sized piece of cod, anyone?! But if we take a closer look at this common phenomenon, we may find some solid reasons why restaurants do that. First, it’s the pricing of the ingredients. The more high-priced ingredients they use for the dish, the more expensive the dish will be. Moreover, small portions can reduce costs for purchasing ingredients. As a result, less money gets wasted, adding to a higher profit margin for a restaurant.

My Cocktail Came In A Box
The second reason is that eating at a fancy restaurant is about savoring every bite. Food served in smaller portions will help you relish and savor every bite. This is part of the experience and so it’s defo not for the hangover-induced munchies.
Moreover, smaller portion sizes are said to lead to a better customer experience. Because the truth is, by the time you sit down and finish your substantial meal, you really don’t get the full dining experience. A large portion does a great job at filling up your stomach, but fine dining is not just about that. It’s giving those taste buds a well-deserved workout and it’s all about being in the moment.

This is not a restaurant. This is someone’s house, and I’m betting this was some sort of family joke.
Uhm.. How Do I Drink It..?
Put your mouth at the edge of the table and hope some of it runs in your direction.
This beverage makes me mad just knowing it's out there. It doesn't matter if it's frozen; it's pretentious and it's touching the table.
Actually it's on the menu. Which are statistically cleaned far less often.
Load More Replies...Don't just look at the glass in front of you....look to the right and you will see the little ferris wheel with the little dough balls on it...to the left you see tiny fried dough balls in little baskets or pots, and the glass with the blue stuff in it with the pink whipped cream on top this is obviously a table dessert display.
That’s why the placemats are sturdy. Looks like one would pull it to the table edge, put their hand under it then flip it over. The gangster mug shot is extra… is that Derringer? Silliness. Restaurants need to get people talking in person I guess, as we are losing that practice.
take the menu, flip it over, take the menu off of the top then drink your Lysol-flavored drink.
I can't stop looking at the rest of the table. I'm a chef myself and I love creativity and artistic design when it comes to food presentation. However there's a line between being creative or just being messy. You can be creative without making a meal (or even an appetizer) more difficult to eat. The drink..I don't even know. I guess flip it and pray.
Pick it up holding the menu under it, turn it right side up, remove menu.
I don't think that is a drink-- it looks like some type of frozen dessert or perhaps jello (jelly) with cream.
No really…does anyone know how you are supposed to drink this? Never seen anything like this in my life
I don't believe it's a drink--it looks like a frozen or gelatin dessert.

I had to stop after getting all furious and frustrated. The idiocy just oozes off these photos and joints doing this makes me believe they had little to no respect for their customers.... which might be a thing as these customers who think this is ok are morons. end of rant. Have a lovely weekend dear Panda's.
Guarantees you getting all over social media...as they say, all publicity is good publicity... I'd just walk straight out and find another place to eat

This crap is absurd, and anyone who'd pay good money for it is an idiot. Do you ever get the feeling that these hipster restaurants are deliberately trying to see how badly they can get away with insulting their customers before they start losing business?
It is an insult isn't it. And the disrespect for food, God, I just can't ...

Load More Replies...None of this is remotely creative. Quite a lot of it creates unsafe conditions. All of it is pretentious and stupid.

What worries me most about these pretentious presentations is the hygiene of the accessories used
I look at all of these and every time I think, "What the hell is that?"
Most were disgustingly stupid. My guess no health department was notified, and they wonder why diseases are contracted. Like Forrest Gump said "You never know what you're gonna get."
I’m certain that some of these restaurants think they are being quite unique and clever doing this, but they don’t realize how absurd this is.
I'd get up and walk out. These 'restaurants' need to be shut down by the health department.
Um...shouldn't "plating" be an exercise in arranging food to look MORE appetizing? Oh, yeah...the whole "plate" thing again.
I must not be the right sort of sophisticated to not appreciate these types of "over-the-top" food presentations. I just want my food plated up tidily on a clean plate, accompanied by clean cutlery and clean whatever the food I ordered comes in/on.
Omg! I bet all these 'creative culinary art' (lol!) are waaay expensive & the idiots who pay for this kind of food or go to these kind of 'high class' restaurants are pathetic.. ugh!!
I would have demanded a “ plate” immediately. These offerings are repulsive and disgusting….but that’s just me.
Ok, so you want to eat like a dog. Just have a food fight and then eat it off the floor without a fork. Put your face down... on the floor and lick it. This kind of service is disrespectful to the customer and the food. Zero dignity, disgusting.
Thank goddess we can't afford to eat in these kind of places. At least a greasy spoon type diner respects the process and just serves me well-cooked food in generous portions. At least, that's what I consider a good restaurant. These dishes are just art installations, right? People aren't really paying good money to eat this nonsense, right? SMH
This post has made me realize I am extremely particular about food hygiene.
Exactly! How do they even clean most of these contraptions? Nope!
