“85% Of Women Wear The Wrong Bra Size”: 50 Wild Statistics That Are As Random As They Are Interesting, As Shared On This Twitter Page
InterviewIf someone asked you if you love math, your response might not be too enthusiastic. But if someone asked you if you’d like to learn interesting facts about the world and all of the people in it, you might be a little more inclined to say yes. As boring as the word ‘statistics’ may sound, as it may trigger you to think about a snooze-fest of a class you took in high school that you barely made it out of with a passing grade, stats can be pretty exciting.
To teach you pandas a little bit more about our amazing planet and all of the people inhabiting it, we did a deep dive into the World of Statistics Twitter account. Whether you’re curious about the most commonly spoken languages in the world or what percentage of the population is incapable of getting smelly armpits, World of Statistics has got you covered.
Below, you’ll find our personal favorite fascinating stats from the page that we think you’ll enjoy too, as well as interviews with Denis, the creator of World of Statistics, and Tim Macuga, Senior Project Officer for the Australian Data Science Network and part of the team behind The Random Sample podcast. So be sure to upvote the statistics that blow your mind, and then let us know in the comments what the most interesting stat you’ve ever heard was. And if you’re interested in learning even more fun facts after finishing this article, you can check out another Bored Panda list featuring statistics you might not know right here.

As an American, about 97% of what I see daily reflects on the sad and significant decline of society. We are failing as a nation and deserve it with our policies and selective enforcement of laws. No one has respect for each other sny more. And for the record I do NOT blame Biden. It's been an observable trend for at least 30 years.
Load More Replies...AND in USA CEO's get enormous tax breaks, so they don't even pay fair share of taxes to support their communities or country.
They aren't part of a community, they are a part of fascist capitalism
Load More Replies...I think it should be a law that all CEO's are not allowed to earn more than 10 time what the lowest earning person in their company earns.
I wouldn't care if the Ceos made billions. The problem is them denying us the money we need to buy the things/resources we need to exist. Making it to where the rest of us can't earn enough money for our basic needs to be met. It's not the money we need anyway, it's the resources and there is plenty for all of us. These billionaires can maintain their generational wealth while the rest of us live a comfortable decent life. We live on the same planet with the same resources and they intentionally use money as a way to deny people those necessities. Last time I checked the food keeps growing, the money keeps exchanging hands and recycling day after year after year. There's no excuse for anyone to go without the resources that were put here for all of the day we were born. It pure cruelty to take that away from any human, much less people working hard for a simple decent life.
Load More Replies...No CEO is worth more than 10x their workers!! They do not contribute that much to the company!!
You also have to take into account that the USA is home to some off the largest companies in the world. There is a much different amount of workers.
The US is not governed from Capitol Hill or the White House. It's run from the board rooms and executive offices of corporations.
But yeah, tell me again how it's the poor people who are robbing the country blind. Explain it to me like I'm one of those slower kids in the class who tastes the glue, thinks about it, then begins chugging it.
The 1% try to convince us all that the hardest working low wage workers are somehow lazy. Many people buy into that not realizing it's actually the millionaire that's lazy and does absolutely nothing. They literally pay everyone else to take care of everything for them. From their business, houses, cars, kids, yachts, and anything else you can think of. They just enjoy it all and their time while the rest of us maintain it all for them. I'll never understand how people don't realize that. They keep us underpaid and while pushing the view of them being deserving and hardworking. While convincing the people who really do it all that they aren't even deserving of having basic needs met and being comfortable and we believe it, some of us do anyway. Our own people look down on certain jobs and kick their own people and think they aren't deserving of a decent life. That's what really stings, having your own people in your community struggling to live as well and in the same breath will preach that a cashier shouldn't earn enough money to have food, water, housing, clothing, and healthcare. That fact alone will keep those in control of it all in the best position possible. Because even our own people don't value us or think we should be taken care of.
Load More Replies...World of Statistics is an extremely successful page. It was initially launched in December 2020, and it has already amassed over 838k followers. The page's bio quotes the late Mark Twain saying, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” But along with the sense of humor the creator sometimes showcases on the page, followers certainly can learn a thing or two. For example, did you know that about 11% of Americans have never left the state that they were born in? If you happen to be one of those people, it might be time to start planning a road trip!
It’s not surprising that this page has grown such a massive following though. Learning more about our world is always fun, and it can be great to have a break from the memes and jokes on Twitter to actually gain some knowledge. There is nothing wrong with discussing comedy content you find online with your friends, but at your next dinner party or work gathering, it might be more fitting to bring up some of the eye-opening stats you’ve learned from World of Statistics.
You don't have enough exclamation points after your "TRUE". Here are three to cut and paste for you. !!!
Load More Replies...You think being at home with your own child is stressful? Try being in a room with 30 other people's children all day.
And then dealing with their parents after hours.
Load More Replies...Yep, at work I can go to the toilet by myself almost whenever I want. I can eat in regular intervals. At home, I’m happy if my son lets me go to the loo at some point in the morning, and I most certainly will have company. And sometimes I don’t eat until he naps (except for his leftovers).
I learned that by talking to your child, explaining things etc....both of my children walked and talked early. Made excellent grades in school etc.... I loved every minute of it. Would not trade anything for that time. We were a blessed family for me to be able to stay home.
Load More Replies...I worked with kids and looked after my daughter too, was bloody tough!!! You are living what you're working and working what you're living, felt like there was no end.
Load More Replies...It shouldn’t be tho… we’re not supposed to raise kids by ourselves - we need others to help and support us (family members, friends, neighbours) but the current capitalistic approach to live has taken it all away and it’s incredibly tough to be a parent these days
Load More Replies...Not true for me. I enjoyed being a stay at home Mom and felt very blessed to have been able to do so. I wouldn't trade those years for anything.
To gain some insight on the background of the page, we reached out the creator of World of Statistics, Denis. "World of Statistics was launched as an addition to our main account - World of Engineering," Denis told Bored Panda. "On the WoE page, I often posted various statistics on engineering topics and saw that it had a very good response from the audience. People love statistics. And since the topics for statistics are endless, it was decided to make a separate account, which began to develop rapidly."
When asked why people find statistics so fascinating, Denis told us, "Statistics are important because today we live in the information world. Literally in one tweet you see enough information to assess the state of any issue in the world. There are countries often compared with each other, and of course, followers are always happy to see their countries in the top."
We also asked Denis to share the most fascinating stat that he knows, and he told us, with a smile, that 69.420% of statistics are made up. Yeah, I'm going to have to have that one fact-checked...
Stuff like this should make every US citizen realize that we are no longer the "Land of the Free". We are all wage slave workers. Indentured servants to our wealthy, who don't pay taxes.
Many of us do in fact realize that and we hate it and want change.
Load More Replies...US citizen here... waited until I was at a large enough company (50+ employees) to have kids so I could qualify for FMLA (12 weeks off for medical, unpaid) with 6 of those weeks getting a miniscule amount of short term disability payments. Our system is a joke.
USA: this single mother just went through the worst physical pain anyone could experience so after she just paid thousands of dollars just to have a child let’s overwhelm her with having to go to work as well and if she doesn’t come to work she’s broke and can’t properly take care of her child. Please add on to this if you would like to
Yep. USA is also moving towards becoming fascist authoritarian dictatorship based on christian theocracy. If Democrats don't unite and start voting party line and playing dirty like republicans, USA as a democracy will be lost in very near future.
Load More Replies...It's actually more, but after the 1st year they only pay a certain percentage of your wage, not all of it. (Bulgarian here)
Load More Replies...Isn't it only 6 month, split between the parents? And with the new rules the parents must split them.
Load More Replies...Not sure where this statistic is from, but many US companies offer paid maternity and paternity leave.
I believe this is referring to statutory leave as opposed to discretionary leave.

Take my upvote, idk why you're being downvoted for speaking the truth, some forced birther can't handle it, I guess
Load More Replies...Actually In Bulgaria you get 1 year at some (pretty significant) percentage of your salary and you can get a second year at a minimum wage.
We also reached out to Tim Macuga for some insight on the topic of statistics, as he was one of the team members behind creating The Random Sample podcast, which provides a unique glimpse into the world of mathematics and statistics, and how these sciences play such a crucial role in so many areas of our lives. "The world is literally swimming in data," Tim told Bored Panda. "More than ever, we need people who understand how to work with data and who have the expertise on how to analyze it and find the hidden stories inside of it that will help governments, businesses and other organisations make better-informed decisions."
Tim also made it clear how fascinating statistics can be. "Statistics are anything but boring," he says. "The skills that statisticians have allow them to work on a variety of problems that involve business, the environment, conservation, health and so on. No matter where your interests are, there’s a problem for you to help tackle with your statistical expertise. It also allows you to get involved in a variety of different problems. That never gets boring!"

We also asked Tim for his thoughts on why it's so important for us to study statistics. "There is only going to be a growing demand for these skills," he told Bored Panda. "Students who take this path will definitely open themselves up to a world of opportunities."

You probably use statistics in your daily life more than you even realize. Even if you are not sitting at a computer analyzing data or crunching numbers, somebody is doing it behind the scenes to make your life easier. According to Michigan Technological University, the importance of applied statistics has increased exponentially over time, so in today’s data-driven world, we rely more heavily than ever on the discipline of statistics.
Michigan Tech notes the census as a prime example of how statistics have become more prevalent over time. The United States conducted its first census in 1790, but since then, the census has become more and more comprehensive. It now covers a diverse range of topics to provide accurate information about the demographics and economic information of the population. The statistics garnered from the census are then used to help governments make decisions affecting the allocation of funds, congressional representation, where school districts lie and much more. In fact, the American federal government now has 13 statistical agencies analyzing information related to labor trends, health, education, and much more.
I'm not 40 yet and already heavily subpar. Best i can do is a sarcastic snicker or ironic grin.
Watch “written by an AI” videos. Those made me laugh myself to tears, which does not happen often
Load More Replies...Every government and organization around the world relies heavily on statistics to get anything done. The United Nations Statistics Division even refers to the role of official statistics as an “indispensable element in the information system of a democratic society” and “one of the cornerstones of good government and public confidence in good government“. Accurate statistics are vital to politicians who need to know where to campaign and what demographics to target and to law enforcement agencies attempting to combat crime and fraud. If there were no records showing how effective, or ineffective, methods have been in stopping crime, agencies would simply be blindly guessing by trial and error, wasting time and resources and allowing for many more victims.
A few of the examples Michigan Tech provides for how governments use statistics every day are for tracking economic numbers, conducting federal science research, and collecting and analyzing educational data. It is crucial that governments keep a close eye on all of this information to better serve their constituents and make decisions in the best interest of the nation.
This explains my husband. He's never worn deodorant and he can't understand why everyone else does. I keep trying to explain that he's unique - maybe if I show him this, he'll get it!
My husband is the same way. He does put it on sometimes if it is really hot just in case. But I will say that gene doesn't carry over to the feet, at least in his case.
Load More Replies...The East Asian population (eg China, Koreas, Japan) have quite a high prevalence of this gene (ABBCC11 gene or something of the sort). Also changes earwax texture, of all things.
My husband is chinese and his sweat never smells. His entire family is the same. He does sweat almost unnaturally in volume though when he exercises or in hot weather, but still no smell.

I also don't produce any oil, so my skin is always incredibly dry (like I moisturise 5-6x a day and still dry!) can go weeks if I want not washing my hair and it looks fine and also don't produce tears or saliva. Mine has been put down to an autoimmune disorder because I used produce these things when I was young but it stopped when I was in my early/ mid 20's. I still wear natural deodorant to smell nice but when I'm really ill (I have many other autoimmune conditions that make me bed bound a lot of the time and a condition called EDS) it's handy because I don't need to worry about washing my hair/ showering (I wash with a flannel in bed I'm not scummy!) for the few days I'm super bad.
I'm so sorry that you have EDS, I have a patient with it and sometimes it's incredibly painful.

Grizzly bears are BIG. Don't try to engage one, you will lose. Even shooting one will probably just make it angry and it will maul you to death before it has a chance to bleed out.

As an Alaskan... PLEASE HIKE PREPARED! If you encounter a bear, make yourself look big, Pick up small children. Do not put your back to the bear. Talk to the bear softly as you back away slowly. To decrease an encounter with a bear, have bells on your backpack to let them know your coming, and sing songs. Never hike alone. Thank you.

I broke my knee tripping over my dog a couple years back. 3 weeks on crutches.
I believe it! My dog does two things that I am convinced will eventually trip up me or my dad. 1) he headbutts the back of your knee as your walking in front of him, and 2) he squeezes himself between your legs and the wall or a piece of furniture as your walking and it throws off your balance. Fluffy adorable nuisance. 😂
Yeah, I know he could knock you over, but head butting the back of your knees sounds kinda cute.

I was lucky. I was going slow, and I got away with scaring my cat off before I stepped on him by yelling when I felt his fur on my bare foot. I was carrying a heavy stack of books at the time and couldn't see too well. Turns out he thought I was going to build a staircase up to the top of the bulk kibble bag so he could gorge himself. Miss you, Musty. Hope your new owner knows you love chasing random things like bouncy balls and ribbons.
It's a tradeoff with the hundred thousands that are saved from heart- and anxiety attacks, and the millions of years people live with better quality of live.
Imagine if we did not have any accurate statistics available to help us make informed decisions. How many people die climbing this mountain each year? I have no idea, so I’ll just assume there is no risk! What are the chances that it will rain on this particular day in April? I’m not sure, so I’ll plan my wedding to be outdoors with no backup plans whatsoever! Is it healthy to eat red meat three times a day every day of my life? Nothing is telling me otherwise, so I’ll just carry on this way. Okay, you get the point. But can you imagine if we really were running around making decisions with absolutely no information to go off of? Life would be chaotic, dangerous and reckless. I, for one, am extremely thankful for whoever is out there cracking away at a computer and conducting surveys to make my life easier.

“The first fax ever was sent in by Alexander Bain, a Scottish philosopher, inventor and educator. He patented the technology, known then as the “Electric Printing Telegraph,” in 1843. The way Bain’s technology worked was by synchronizing the movement of two pendulums with a clock. This synchronization allowed the image to be scanned line by line. The image would then be transferred onto a cylinder, which would reproduce it by syncing with the pendulums.“ thefaxguys.com
Statistics can be comforting as well. If you have a phobia of sharks or plane crashes, it might actually be nice to learn the exact numbers on how often these freak incidents occur. In the entire year of 2021, worldwide, there were only 137 shark attacks reported. And of those attacks that were unprovoked, only 9 ended up being fatal. Considering how massive the planet is and how many people go swimming, surfing and poking around in the oceans each year, your chances of avoiding sharks are pretty good. And when it comes to plane crashes? The average person’s risk of dying on a commercial flight, due to an accident or crash, is about one in 29.4 million. That is extremely unlikely. Feel safer traveling now?

That number is a lot lower than I would have expected. Lots of people are happy where they are. They have family close by, as well as friends they know since childhood. Unless they are very career driven, there is little reason for people to live far away. And fancy vacations are also not for everyone. My cousin used to just stay in the hotel and order room service for a week. Now she saves the flight and hotel money and just orders takeaways from home for a week.
If you’re a sports fan, it’s likely that you are invested in statistics as well. Data analytics are extremely important in professional sports to improve players’ performances, decide which players to draft and sign, determine what course of action to take depending on the opponent at hand, and to decide how much to pay each professional athlete. Coaches and players often analyze hours of footage to find out exactly what they did well and how to replicate it, along with what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again in the future. Almost everything can be broken down to a science, including how to win a national championship.
I wouldnt be surprised with how frequently some of us gain and loose weight
My ex wife said her boobs would swell a little and make her bras uncomfortable if she was about to have a heavy period, sounded kinda painful
Load More Replies...Yeah, 80% of bra companies use this fact to try to sell bras, and 97% of them don't offer bras in my size. The reason we're wearing the wrong size is THEY DON'T MAKE BRAS IN OUR ACTUAL SIZE and we have to make do with an "almost-fits" bra.
Yes! This! We want to wear the right size but finding the right bra is like the holy grail.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, this isn't possible for everyone. I had size 34 F breasts before I had a reduction when I was 19 (one of the best decisions I ever made). It was more uncomfortable not wearing a bra due the the weight of them hanging on my chest. I went down to a 34C. For the last 22 years I have gone braless 90% of the time, and it feels amazing!
Load More Replies...There is no way to have something fitting, when breast can change each week.
Bras tend to warp in the wash and as your wearing it because our breathing and movements stretch them out.
That's why there's 3 rows of hooks - as the bra stretches over time, you're supposed to hook it tighter. It's best to buy a bra that hooks on the widest hooks when new.
Load More Replies...That's pretty optimistic considering they're designed by men who don't possess mammary tissue nor know how it moves and feels.
Men do possess a small amount of mammary tissue, and some definitely know how it moves and feels!! Lightheartedness aside there are many female led brands today.
Load More Replies...There's also the fact that a lot of women have boobs that are two different sizes. 90% of women have breasts that are 15% to 20% different in size. But almost all bras are made to be perfectly symmetric. How are you supposed to buy a correctly fitting bra that doesn't cost the earth??? (source: https://healthcare.utah.edu/the-scope/shows.php?shows=0_aup26c6j)
I have a seasonal job that's physical. I have summer and winter bras: summer means I'm more muscular, so I have wider shoulders and smaller boobs.
How is this measured? I don't necessarily dispute this claim since I myself like to pace; but I remain wary of statements involving precise quantification of subjective qualities
I agree. It is like how do they come up with the claim that dogs can't see colours or goldfish have a 2 second memory. I have seen videos of goldfish trained to fetch rings that show this is not true. I went for a walk and I think now that you are 60% more right.

So if I'm a teacher and stand all day...how many marathons does that add up to?
But you deserve a much more important medal as a teacher than one for running a marathon.
Load More Replies...But no it’s not… I’m a teacher and a marathoner and can categorically state that running 10 marathons a year is exponentially more physically challenging. The same number of steps/ exertion spread over a much longer spread of time is in now way equivalent.
They're talking about improvements to your entire body system. I did a research paper in college and found that if you had to choose between exercising more and standing less or standing more and exercising less, you should choose the latter. The health benefits of standing vs exercising are overwhelming in favor of standing. Kinda neat! Message me and I'll find that research paper (or better yet the studies I found) and send it to you. Though, to your point, yes it's harder to exert more energy over a shorter time than a longer one.
Load More Replies...What about a 13 hr shift as a waitress that never sits down or stops moving. My step counter has me at avg 10 miles a day walking
Walking half a mile to work each day is also equivalent to 10 marathons over a year. So I guess 3-4 hours of standing is approximately equivalent to walking 1 mile?
Edit: ½ mile to work + ½ mile home = 1 mile a day. Approximately 260 work days in a year. 1 marathon ≈ 26 miles, so about 10 marathons per year.
Load More Replies...Throughout the day. Although I'm sure the first 30 seconds or so doesn't count as your body adjust to standing
Load More Replies...Ok human calculators, I'm a waitress and can work a 9-10hr shift with only sitting for 30mins a day. How many marathons is that?! Know Fitbit is giving me medals and awards left right and center, but means nothing to me sort from I've done a far few miles!!!!
Right? Someone explain this to my calories, please.
Load More Replies...How do people stand the pure pain of standing without starting to skip around at 30 minutes like their soles are on fire?
Statistics are also necessary to have proof of just how great an athlete is. Any casual UFC viewer can see that Kamaru Usman is an incredible fighter, but it is much more impressive to know that he has 20 wins and only 2 losses in his professional career. He also had been taken down by an opponent exactly 0 times until recently. Accurately tracking statistics on athletes may not be a life or death situation, like keeping a close eye on Covid-19 rates or a nation’s health information, but it certainly is fascinating. And it can help a player solidify their title as greatest of all time or help them land a spot in the hall of fame.
Last I read this it said that only 10% of people weren't lactose intolerant.
I think the people quoting these numbers are playing fast-and-loose with what the several studies actually say; hence the 3rd type of lie.
Load More Replies...Another one that's just wrong, Lactose malabsorption is not lactose intolerant
Yes but even having very mild symptoms, say increased gas or mild bloating, make a person lactose intolerant. My grandma said she'd always get the "walkin' toots" after drinking milk but adamantly denied being lactose intolerant
Load More Replies...Depends on country actually. In Scandinavia most people can drink regular milk.
It depends on their microbiome, people can be genetically intolerant but their gut bacteria does the work for them.
I LOVE MILK!!!!!!! But why when I start drinking a glass I can't stop? I keep drinking till its all gone. I am sure I could easily drink a 4 pint bottle in one go.
Me too!! Soooooo many people tell me they hate milk or think its gross. I do not understand that at all
Load More Replies...Hmmm not sure of the accuracy of this one ... 70% seems a huge segment of the population, we sell an awful lot of dairy products for only 30% of the population.
Most humans tolerate the intolerance well. Mild symptoms they think are normal.
Load More Replies...I remember hearing that! Because milk is cow tit juice, we aren’t actually supposed to digest it 😅
Actually, lactose ("milk sugar") is a component common in *all* milk, including human. But usually, mammals lose the ability to digest it when they grow out of infancy. Humans who can digest lactose as adults have a mutation that simply keeps the gene for the enzyme for lactose digestion active.

Being lactose intolerant, allergic to lactose or allergic to dairy are all different conditions and there are other conditions like IBS that may mimic lactose intolerance. Some people aren't intolerant but sensitive which is different again. So it's really hard to put an accurate number on those who are lactose intolerant.

Statistics have been vital in our lives long before the pandemic, but I, personally, have never looked at so many charts in my life as I have since March 2020. It is extremely important for governments and citizens to understand and accurately record what is happening with the pandemic to keep everyone as safe as possible. If we had no records of when rates began spiking, particularly death rates, we might not have taken any action to stop the spread until it was too late. While Covid-19 has already impacted all of our lives, I cannot imagine how devastating the effects could have been without the millions of people around the world who did everything they could to keep tabs on this illness.
O god I thought it said never been born on earth Jesus I almost had a heart attack
Get ready to reschedule that heart attack: technically an infinite amount of people have never been born on Earth.

I actually have this! In one of my eyes there is a large splash of brown covering most of it while i have greenish blue eyes :)
Load More Replies...Please pardon my ignorance, but I didn't realize there are so many different eye colors!
Same! Thought red and violet were just for fictional characters
Load More Replies...What about those of us whose eyes change color depending on what we where?
Your eyes don’t actually change color, it’s just an illusion

Eyes with dark blue edge, light grey middle and brown and amber next to the see hole (forgot the word lol). What option should I take? Gray?
You would be expected to go with either the majority of the eye or with the eye colour that it most looks like from a short distance away. Mine are green but have a dark grey outer ring and are slightly more golden in the middle. They only look green to anyone who isn't getting up close and personal though! A lot of eyes are a mix when you really have a good look.

When it comes to having accurate statistics, we can all do our part to help out. When it’s time to record data for the census, please cooperate. Mail back your questionnaire, answer that phone call, or hop on the internet to be sure your data is captured. And if you take an at-home test for Covid-19 and you end up being positive, please report it to your local government or health agency. No matter how hard statisticians are working, they aren’t mind readers. We all have a personal responsibility to help spread accurate information.
I can imagine. My step dad volunteered during the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. He saw a truck load of his friends die. It really messed him up and he never volunteered again. I'm right there with you, might even be dead longer, hard to say since I'm to lazy to do the math.
Load More Replies...IIRC the 11 lost minutes is based on the fact that it takes an average of 11 minutes to smoke a cigarette. So the lost time is actually the time spent smoking.
Load More Replies...So, the sixty cigarettes a week x fourth years comes out to about three years of life lost. That’s a lot. But boy, I sure loved smoking. The question is was it enjoyable enough to give up three years? My last three years will prolly be s**t anyway.
As long as I don't have to inhale the smoke, I think every person has the right to decide what they want to do with their lives. I hate the hypocrisy of the governments that get an obscene amount of money in taxes from cigarettes and then shame smokers for smoking.
Load More Replies...That doesn’t add up, both my parents smoke, one mid 70s, one mid 80s. According to this calculation, they should be dead already. I’m not sure if my maths is right, but using 60 years as a rough calculation, it only allows for two cigarettes a day to live till you’re 80, and they definitely smoke more than that.
It's some kind of average presumably. Not everyone will die early because of smoking but a lot will.
Load More Replies...I'm working towards never, ever being in a care home by smoking 40 a day.

That's only true if you have black hair. Redheads have about 90,000, Brunettes have 110,000, and Blonds have 150,000.
Maybe that explains why I always shed so much... I have more hairs than other people!
Load More Replies...More fun math implications: this means that in your nearby city there are guaranteed to be people with exactly the same number of hairs on their head!
It also implies that if you have a full head of hair, you have a lot more than 100,000 hairs there.
Load More Replies...Interestingly enough, nuclear reactors these days are actually a safe and effective source of clean energy. Ironically many nations' green emission initiatives are being counterproductive with the closing of nuclear power plants, since the power will be supplemented by coal, leading to more pollution.
They use incredible amounts of water and right now many countries have a shortage and they have NOT solved the waste problem... you can't keep burying it in concrete bunkers on a planet that has seismic activity and assume it is safe either. People claim it is a small amount, increase reactors and it doesn't stay a small amount forever. Plus world supply of uranium is estimated to only be about 80 years worth based on reactors built and planned now. Renewable IS the answer and all homes should be built with solar capacity and wind capture capacity for a start. Most developers still build homes on a model created early last century, they haven't even increased the size of a standard garage yet cars are bigger. There has been too little investment because of short termism, lack of innovation and the lack of desire to invest. The idea that anything producing radioactive waste as "green' for our planet is laughable.
Load More Replies...Still, nuclear energy is like flying an airplane without having any airport. This is how we produce highly radioactive waste without knowing how to deal with it. Our children have to pay it.
We do have a vault. At least I think we have. The place is deep in bedrock far from underground water sources (difficult in Finland) and far from seismic fault lines (conversly hella easy here). There was some talk about what kind of pictograms should be painted at the entrance to make sure someone in the future would understand that the place has nothing valuable, and lots of deadly things
Load More Replies...No matter how "safe and effective" nuclear power plants may be, the societies that operate them often aren't. Look at the list.
Finland is getting the 5th one up and running as we speak. The math right now is that if it doesn't pass the safety inspection we need to have rolling blackouts during the winter. And even then the blackouts are probable. I'm prepared and will stand by Ukraine. We have been depending on Russian electricity until now.
Unfortunately the toxic/radioactive waste left behind has the potential to cause huge environmental damage
Nuclear is a true, green, clean renewable energy and we should be using it a LOT more.
Nuclear power is extremely safe in the short term, as good as any renewable. The technology is well developed and reliable, moreso than any alternative. Wind and solar are nowhere close to supplying world power needs and hydro is not an option for much of the world. Long term waste storage is an issue and Finland, not know for environmental disdain, has a safe solution. If the environment is truly in crisis people better start using things that work right now rather insisting a perfect solution is imminent.
The idea of nuclear power is extremely safe ...the issue is that some of the countries putting it into practice won't want to spend the money to actually operate it safely and maintain it adequately. That's why people here in my neck of the woods are so anti-nuclear...we don't trust our government to not let it melt down.

The dollar of 1932 has now a worth of $25 but the dollar of today is only worth 4ct compared to the dollar of 1932

huh. different countries in the euro zone have different inflation rates? Could each US state have a different inflation rate? Could it vary per city? Or per neighbourhood?
The cost of items within the eurozone varies a lot, just as prices are different in Hawaii, California or rural Louisiana. For instance, groceries are around 10-20% more expensive in the Netherlands compared to Germany. Petrol is ca 30 cents more per litre. One big factor with inflation rates at the moment is energy prices, and governments take very different approaches to tackle that, which also results in different inflation rates.

No, it's not that you want more babies, there are enough babies coming into this world everyday; you want more WHITE babies, don't you, miss Giorgia Meloni?
That's because all economies are basically pyramid schemes, requiring more and more working to pay into pensions, tax and just basically be wage slaves for the economy to grow. In case you wonder why governments haven't tackled overpopulation and the resulting climate change its because it's bad for the economy (and therefore rich people).
Load More Replies...A lot of countries are now in a state of decreasing population. China for example has more deaths than births every year!
The statistics wildly vary depending on source. The U.S. census has the world population at 7, 917, 119, 000 (at the time I checked) With a population increase of 2 people per second. While "World of Meters", the source of the post above, has it a 7.97 billion, and uses estimates from 2019 combined with the US census numbers.

That's true. As of August 2022, due to the war in Ukraine, the value of the Euro has dropped more than 35%, to its original value of $1.00 US. Meanwhile due to inflation and international tariffs, the US Dollar is heading upwards, likely to double in value in the next ten years.
That's very bad news for US companies wanting to sell their goods in Europe. This is also driven by the rate of inflation in the US being higher by 1 percentage point over that of Euro-Zone countries.

I don't think a 154-lb person could drink 128-ish lbs of coffee - or anything else - at once.
That means by the time you drink 70 cups you will now weigh 714 pounds. So you will be ok but man are you going to pee.

Load More Replies...Yeah, not just governments. When my husband was working on his phd in archaeology, he used to tell me how one of his professors liked to make the point that academic opinion doesn't evolve until the old 'moguls' of any given field die. A person, even a really smart, highly respected person, might form an idea decades ago and will refuse to change their mind, no matter what new evidence gets brought to light. Younger people in the field might try to push for a new idea, but will ultimately be 'made fools of' if it strays too far from established dogma. So, basically all of human knowledge is being guarded by these old farts who are still working with their outdated theories.
