We've all been there. The meticulously planned holiday that suddenly goes wrong in every way possible. A delayed flight causing a mishap of scheduling problems, the unsettling realization that your luggage might be touring a completely different continent somewhere around the world, or that memorable moment when the 'cozy beachfront accommodation' you booked turned out to be a scam on Airbnb. However, these vacation fails, while frustrating at the time, often turn into the funniest stories in our ‘inventory’.
After all, it's not just the picture-perfect sunsets and good food that make a trip memorable. Sometimes, it's the unplanned detours and unexpected misadventures as some would describe them as 'fails' that end up defining our personal travel experiences, reminding us of the unpredictability of life!

I Hiked A Mountain In Hot Weather. A Monkey Stole My Water At The Top Then Proceeded To Drink It In Front Of Me
I would be honored to sacrifice my water to a thirsty animal, even if they did steal it.
he was most likely lazy, not thirsty. Animals in touristic areas are smart and know that tourists are quick acces to food and water.

100-Year-Old Family Cabin Burned To The Ground On The First Day Of Vacation
"A large storm rolled through in the early morning hours and the cabin took a bolt of lightning to the service mast. Flames shot out of the outlets and the entire electrical system caught on fire immediately. Thankfully everyone was already awake from the thunder and was able to evacuate. The VFD and heavy rains kept the fire from spreading so no other residences were damaged."

Load More Replies..."This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport being the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and the architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs." In all fairness, it is becoming less and less frequent and this picture cannot be recent in 99% of the world for technical reason. The logistical chain has completely changed over time and lost luggages are an exceptional event (the main reason being theft). Luggages sent to the wrong airport is close to non existent. The worst you may have to deal with is waiting for the next flight to your destination if somehow your luggage missed your flight (short stopover..). And it will be delivered to you by the airline where you’re staying (iata rules).
I have personally seen an item of luggage fall off the back of a cart on its way to the plane. Fortunately, it was spotted and loaded. Also fortunately, the breakable souvenirs weren't packed into my dad's bag, because they probably would have been broken from the fall...

In the US, you have to put anything liquid inside a zip lock bag, since you aren't allowed to exceed 1 quart / liter of total liquid containers.
Judging by the size of the bottle we can see, I suspect this was part of the checked luggage. The litre/in bag rule for cabin bags applies just about everywhere - the industry standardised.

Train is going where it's supposed to; you're on the wrong train
Load More Replies...I work in the rail industry. Dumbest thing a passenger ever said to me was "the train driver drove the train the wrong way".
There is a story written by a driver on the London Underground of a train (his) ending up on the wrong track - signalling/points error he didn't catch - so it does happen. However, I suspect your passenger did the same thing as OP. I'll confess, I once leapt onto a train whose doors were closing, got a round of applause from the gaggle of old ladies in the priority seats, and then had to ask them if I was actually on the train to Glasgow. It would have detracted from the entirely slick entry had I been on the wrong train. (The station in question was close enough that it had a board displaying the platform of the next train going to Glasgow, rather than just relying on the usual departure board. There was a train there when I got to the platform, I jumped. Fortunately correctly. And, given we were so close to Glasgow, I got laughed at by pretty much everyone who heard me ask. I do miss that place.)

I'm On A Motorcycle Trip From Colorado Springs To Las Vegas. I Went South To Avoid The Snow, And Now I'm Stuck In Arizona With Over A Foot Of Snow
I live in Flagstaff and the 2022-2023 winter has been the 2ed biggest snow fall recorded in Flagstaff
It blows my mind that snow like that happens in the same state where road signs, dumpsters, the roads themselves... literally melted in the heat.
For those who aren't from the area I can assure y'all this is completely normal. I'm from The Springs myself. Headed to Texas end of April had to stop at noon & get a room in Trinidad because of the snow.

Well no wonder the flight was delayed, the airplane is inside the terminal! /s

This happens all the time. If they couldn't go a day early to avoid this kind of thing, they could've easily changed their flight to meet the Cruise at the next Port, or any of the Ports on the Cruise's itinerary. Expectation vs. Reality Of Traveling 2,874 Miles To See The Cliffs Of Moher
I actually had a win at the cliffs of Moher. It was awfully foggy and dismal but just clear enough to make out the cliff edge opposite. The photos came out extremely dramatic, like the cliffs were falling off the face of the Earth. Better than if it was sunny.
Similar situation but at Tintagel Castle. Got some great photos of the castle in the fog
Load More Replies...I can vouch for this, it was cloudy when I went (Also someone tried to take wedding photos and it was muddy so the bride's dress was basically ruined)
My great, great uncle, Cornelius O'Brien built the tower on top of the cliffs.
Should have started from LA - fog might have cleared by the time you arrived. I grew up about 100 miles from there - never saw it until I came home to visit from Oregon, but the view was GREAT when I finally got there.
Upside of a foggy day at the cliffs - there are GREAT pubs a few miles away in Doolin.

Yes, that can happen in Ireland. And it can quickly change again. We once took friends up Connor Pass to enjoy the view down upon Dingle. But it was so foggy we couldn't even see the sheep grazing two meters from us. And then, all of a sudden, the fog lifted, the clouds parted and a bright ray of sunshine illuminated Dingle in the distance. Here Is My Fiancée Fulfilling Her Lifelong Dream To See The Mona Lisa In Person
"I went to see the worlds most famous painting, in possibly the worlds most popular gallery, and discovered others did too", the post
Seriously. Every picture that's like "the reality of seeing the Mona Lisa in person" is like this one, most of the time even worse. It being smaller than expected is the other meme. What do people expect at this point?
Load More Replies...not worth it. There's so many more pieces of art in the Louvre worth seeing tbh, because lets face it..we all know the Mona Lisa, go see it if it's quiet, but otherwise, enjoy the lesser known art and find something new. (or you can go visit L'Orangerie nearby, and view monet's work. Idk how busy it gets there though, because I was lucky that whilst the mona Lisa was packed, L'Orangerie wasn't. and was pretty empty)
The painting on the opposite wall is worth seeing! The Wedding Feast at Cana was stolen from the San Giorgio Monastery in Venice by Napoleon's soldiers during the Italian campaigns of 1792-1802. The painting is so large (6.77 m × 9.94 m) they had to cut it in half to carry it and you can see where it was cut. It's the largest painting in square meters in the Louvre's collection. It's also remarkable for its artistic composition and technique. A fascinating piece of work and most tourists don't even look at it.
Load More Replies...I’ve heard that the great pyramids are overrun with tourists and the trash they leave behind
I've been there. I cannot overstate how thoroughly disappointing the Mona Lisa is compared to virtually everything else in the Louvre.
Agreed. I was lucky enough to go in my late teens (70s) and it REALLY made an impact on me. Seeing something like the Venus de Milo right in front of you was breathtaking. Ironically, the Mona Lisa was a blip, I barely recall seeing it in passing. Everything else seemed massive compared to such a small painting.

That one is on you, also very dangerous not to have your dog in a kennel in case of a accident!
I have a harness that buckles in to the rear seatbelt that I use to keep my dog safe. Better than having a dog kenneled in the rear - think of the damage if rear ended.
Load More Replies......put your dog in a cage in the back if they're that young and untrained. Also, surely you should have known that Labradors in particular are renown for chewing everything to bits?
Labs are way bad for chewing and digging as puppies. Takes lots of training.
That looks like nervousness and stress. I used to have to get a sedative from the vet, because my dog hated car rides.
Not necessarily. Labs are very mouthy. Puppies will chew and eat anything that doesn't eat them first. And other dogs will shed more under stress but labs shed *constantly*, all year long.

Aspercream or anything with lidocaine is a lifesaver. Prevention is key! Spf should be a broad spectrum no less than 30. The amount you apply matters. 1/2 tsp for the face, full oz for the body. Reapply every two hours or 60 minutes in water. Wear Spf everyday, not just on vacation. Driving your car or being in front of windows exposes you to the aging rays. Spf not only prevents cancers, but you’ll also age like milk and have a ton of brown spots if you don’t wear it.
And you never even noticed your legs starting to get red long before this?
Tbf, I live by the beach and sometimes sunglasses skew vision. However, I consistently reapply.
Load More Replies...It's happened to me too... although my legs were criss crossed so it was only on my thighs, it sucked.
Obviously not used to being in the wilderness, or anywhere on a lake for that matter
Well, on the plus side, they didn’t burn their feet and there’s a nice cooling lake nearby….

When You Are On Vacation And The Keypad Lock Stops Working. Then You Try To Access The Door With A Mechanical Key, And That Also Breaks
I have a story that kind of is similar to this. My mom accidentally left the keys in the house when we went outside, and we were stuck outside for a while until the neighbors saved us.
You problem is actually solved here. Those pins are what keep the lock cylinder in place. You could probably open that door with your pinkie finger at that point.
I Went On A $6000-Trip To Japan Last Year, And Took A Photo Of My Friend With Mt. Fuji
This one is the wrong place wrong time. One time I went to Japan and on the train I saw Mount Fuji. It was beautiful. The best time to go to Japan is during Spring. (March-May). It is really beautiful. But still, I don't know when this picture was taken.
I think the friend is the one in the photo with OP behind the camera. I thought the same as you upon first glance.

I had a similar experience last year, not as bad as the entire hotel, but similar. What We Expected And What We Got. I Guess I Won't Be Seeing That Beautiful Norway Scenery
Still an awesome dramatic photo with what I assume is OP or a friend/SO at the end of the walkway

Great Start To My Vacation
Just turn around and say "oh baby, feet are my fetish, can I take your socks off and nibble your toes", and it will never appear again.
The way to deal with this is to plant the pointy part of your elbow into the arch of their foot to reclaim your territory in the most aggressive and brutal way possible, or you know, just knock it off the edge.
First Day On Vacation And Our Half Of The Hotel Doesn't Have Power. Guess Who Might Be Going Home Early
One night at a hotel, right after a shower I tried to blow dry my hair a minute in and the power for the entire place goes out. 10 minutes later with the power back on I tried again.... Let's just say, after the 3rd try followed by a hotel blackout, I decided I was stuck going to sleep with wet hair. Coincidentally, no more power outages after that decision. Used the same dryer long before and long after without any trouble.

That Time I Went To London And Finally Got To See Big Ben
I bet you my next payday you didn't. You saw the Elizabeth Tower that houses Big Ben, which is the bell. Which you haven't seen, so my bank account is safe.
Except that's a bit of a frankenstein situation. Technically you're correct, but if you say "Big Ben" _everyone_ thinks of the tower.
Load More Replies...Sometimes you might be booking your holiday months in advance and finding info on upcoming renovations is hard to find. Also larger cities usually have at least something being renovated at any given time so there's no time when you can see all the sights
Load More Replies...These things are old, and in a city with hundreds of old monuments you can guarantee at least a few will be having maintenance at any one point in time. If the purpose of the trip was to specifically see this thing, might have been worth a quick google before booking flights
Except now it’s very clean, and the numbers on the clock face are back to their original blue.

Expectation vs. Reality Of "Once In A Lifetime Vacation Destination"
I sense some darkroom magic on Photoshop. Sunset plus neutral density gradient plus colour saturation for starters.

Yeah, and living on the coast, there are things called "tides". Wait a while, it will look like the photo.

I Forgot To Fuel Up Before A Long Trip Through Rural Pennsylvania. I've Just Barely Made It To The Nearest Gas Station. I'm Screwed
We went to a little town in Oregon where the family has a cabin and found out that all the gast stations had closed. Forunately we realized this when we still had enough gas to get to the closest town with gas. (To be fair there were only two before and one of those looked like it was closed for renovations.)
I'm from rural PA, trust me, your not finding another gas station. Call an Uber or AAA.
I saw the MPG and almost had a heart attack. ...then I realized that I've been driving a hybrid for so long that this is normal for a conventional engine and actually a lot better than it used to be even 20 years ago.
Good news is, mos tof that state is vertical, so if you're on the way *downhill*....
What I would do: call a taxi, explain situation. Ask him to go to the gas station, buy canister and gasoline. Pay normal price for taxi and give him extra buck.

The Badlands and Crazy Horse were far more impressive.

I Fell Down The Stairs At A Ski Rental House Right After Arriving. I Broke The Railing And Badly Hurt My Right Hip. Now We Will Have To Pay The Security Deposit On Top Of That
That's a lot of broken hips. Or they score them with a saw so any little movement will break them, the renter loses the deposit, and the owner replaces with a $6 spindle and pockets the difference
Load More Replies...This makes no sense. The broken railing is at the top of the stairs, and if OP had hit their right hip, why is the railing on the left?
They probably broke the railing grabbing it to try and stop the fall and hurt their hip on the way down.

Went back in the 90s and having read there might be crowds I aimed for early morning in the middle of the week: Only wait was for the opening time and for example the hall of mirrors had a grand total of 10-15 other tourists. This recipe might still work today even though it's old.

Easy to remove. Burn the back connector with a lighter until the 4 little magnetic ball bearings that hold it together fall out. Misspent youth.
You say that like everyone’s supposed to know that
Load More Replies...Do you have a receipt? Take it to a Levis store in Ontario, see if they can take it off. Or just rock that security tag look!
You don’t need to burn anything. Stick a big flathead screwdriver between the 2 pieces, and pry them apart. Do this on the inside of the jeans just in case it leaves any marks.
Odds are there is a Macy's within an hour or two from where they live. Take a quick trip over the border, get them to take it off, visit Trader Joes, grab lunch, get cheap liquor at the duty free, and the trip will be worthwhile.
