Asking For The Check
Bringing a bill unprompted would be like saying you overstayed your welcome. And anyway, how do they know you won't want another glass of wine?
I once went to Spain, and the tip WASN'T REQUIRED. Why do they call it a 'tip' in America if it's required? They should just call it service fee.
Technically, a tip is not *required*, but expected. It stands for "To Insure Prompt Service", so, basically, if you want prompt service, you tip. If you get bad service, you are not obligated to tip. Technically....however, the problem (in many states) is that servers are paid less than minimum wage, so if you *don't* tip (no matter how bad the service) it's frowned upon. The whole system is flawed and servers should be paid a living wage, and THEN tipping is actually optional

Years ago, a friend and I werde eating outside in April. It was the first truly sunny and warm weekend of the year, so we were enjoying it to the max. At some point, the waiter came and apologised, he had forgotten about us. We told him not to worry and ordered dessert and tea and stayed another good 30-40 minutes.
Wait, in the USA, they bring it when they see that you are done eating? I've been at a restaurant for about 6-7 hours and had 2 meals there and lots of drinks because we were just hanging out with friends
From my experience of living in America all my life (dear god please help me escape) In some restaurants, they ask if you're ready for the check (In some they'll ask if you want anything else or dessert before) and in fast food places, it's paid before-hand.
Load More Replies...In 'Murica is different. After 12 minutes the check is ready for you to pay LOL
It happens I’m sure, but I wouldn’t consider this a common practice in America that warrants this comparison. I owned restaurants and we would ask people at the beginning “would you like me to bring the check when you are done ordering?” especially at lunch. Many people had limited time and since it was busy they didn’t want to have to flag you down to get the check when they were a in a hurry.
Load More Replies...thats actually pretty polite ngl. this way they dont just *assume* you're finished
Free Healthcare
It's not free - it's taxpayer-funded. Like schools, infrastructure, defence, fire/rescue, etc. It's cheaper that way, and easier to access, train for, maintain and improve. 74 nations do this, all of the top 30, with one exception. That one exception has allowed for-profit insurance companies to kneel on the public's neck for decades.
I'm not American and I don't mean to be rude but I have a genuine question. Since pretty much nothing seems to be "free" in America, where do all the millions collect in taxes each year go? How is that money utilised?
Defense, social security, Medicare/Medicaid, and bullshit
Load More Replies...The healthcare system is America is terrible. I am diabetic and insulin has seen the greatest rise in cost over the last 20 years. The ACA provided low premiums but very high deductibles. Meaning you basically have close to the same you would pay with a high premium anyway. Affordable healthcare and socialized medicine are great if you do not have a chronic illness. With that everyone needs to get over this impression about socialized medicine being “free”. This is not at all a comparison like the US knows wtf it is doing, because it doesn’t. But most developed countries with socialized medicine; do not pay 100% of costs, people still get private healthcare because of this, they have strict policies on services provided to immigrants in their countries to control costs, deal with much smaller populations leading to lower costs overall, coverage for coverage for chronic illness in many countries depend on your country of origin while you are there and so forth. Then there is medicine...
I'm confused by your comment- so, American healthcare is bad but better than socialized healthcare?
Load More Replies...Yeah, "free" healthcare. All the health care workers work pro bono. In America, we have free public schools! I am not defending the American health care *system*, which I think is something close to a mess. But no country anywhere has FREE healthcare.
4 Weeks Of Paid Vacation
Wait until you learn that he can't get fired because his boss had an argument with his wife and he has a lot more paid sickdays than paid vacation.....
Actually it is virtually unlimited sick days as long as a doctor certifies you're sick. And 4 weeks paid vacation isn't even that much. We get up to 36 days a year of paid vacation which counts as 6 weeks
Load More Replies...Four weeks of paid vacation is pretty low in European terms. Many employees get 25 days, some even 30. And sick leave is also several weeks (in fact, if you get sick on holidays, it will count as sick leave and you will get your holiday days back).
Besides the 4 weeks paid vacations, some countries pay 14 salaries: 12 months + holidays bonus + Christmas bonus. Meaning, for example, that in December they get 2 salaries (December + Christmas). Portugal. Of course, here the salary is also low... pros and cons ;)
also in Italy we have 14salaries, somebody 15, woman have up to 1.5 year of payed salary when they gave birth (also man have some week to assist). If you lost your job you have for 1 or 2 years 80% of your old salary, and btw I have 5 week paid vacation.
Load More Replies...Im turning 42 and only just found out that the vacation pay (6% after 6 years) wasnt actually money being put aside from my pay cheques. The company was adding it on. I get 3 weeks vacation after 6 years; but now in October theyll be adding it to every cheque instead of putting it aside. Im in Canada
I once had a 6-month work permit for the UK and they made me take a two-week holiday. I had to come back to work afterwards, I couldn't leave and get 2 more weeks' pay.
That’s amazing! I thought I was awesome when I worked up to 3 weeks off!:)
Bored Panda reached out to Kacie Burns, an American actress, dancer, and singer currently living in Florence, Italy who went viral for her fun and lighthearted TikTok videos on cultural quirks of the birthplace of Renaissance. Kacie grew up in Canton, Michigan and moved to NYC when she was 17 for college. In 2018, she decided to take a solo trip to Italy, where she fell in love with the food, the culture, and a boy.
“We were long distance for a year, and then he came to live in NYC on a year-long visa,” Kacie said and added: “I was a professional dancer/actress in NYC, and when COVID shut down my industry, I decided to pursue other big dreams of mine, which were living abroad and traveling—so Dario and I made the move to Italy in January 2021!”
Vouchers From The Government For Food Intolerances
only if you actually get stuck on the toilet for hours from eating a hot dog bun, not because you feel like its good for you and driving up the gluten free bread costs
Load More Replies...This is brilliant! I don't have it in my country but I wished I did. I have a lot of food problems and I know I cost my parents a lot of money buying specialist food
I don’t really get this one. I mean ok, but I wouldn’t say America doesn’t care about your life because you don’t get gluten free vouchers. Also if a doctor diagnosis you with celiac it would of course make sense to stay away from gluten. But having been in the service industry I can tell you gluten intolerance is one of the conditions that many people say they have that really don’t.
The fact is, it's not only about gluten. If you have ANY serious condition, you get "free stuff" in order to cope with it. I have breathing issues and my salbutamol inhalers are 100% free of charges. I also have a hefty discount on cetirizine.
Load More Replies...Kids Choose Specialized Highschools To Attend At 13
This makes a lot of sense. There’s still some secondary school knowledge I am yet to use.
Like most of us you probably spend less time solving for X than trying to figure out WTF.
Load More Replies...I never really liked that system. It is true that the students learn a lot in depth the subjects that they need for their trade. But at least in belgium there is a lot of prejudices for kids who chose paths that are considered "easy" (like building or hairdresser). Also kids at 13 are way too young to know what they want. I would find better a mix system, where kids until 16yo study together (with some optative subjects) and then in the last two years they focus on their specialisation.
I was thinking the same. how often do people realize that the thing they wanted to do at 13 was not a good choice for their 20s and have to start over? it must happen all the time, so i'm sure there's a way of dealing with it, just worries me a bit.
Load More Replies...It's a hangover from trade schools and apprentice-master systems. Not kidding, that's ingrained in their subconscious. I sort of wish that happened in Canada - I got a uni education and could have been a lot happier in a skilled trade.
Same here. I entered high school after most of the trade-skill programs had been eliminated.
Load More Replies...I think there's more to this "choice" than the child choosing by themselves. If it's like the system in my homeland, the teachers, parents and child together decide which academic stream/specialism is best suited to the student's abilities and interests.
Yes, we hae 5 years of elementary school, 3 of (so called) "medium school", and the you can pick 5 years high school which will give you access to college, which only 2 of those (called classical and scientific) will only give you access to university. Nothing good for a job if that’s your wish. At my times there were also shorter high schools of 3 and 4 years but didn’t give access to university. The 3 years but the are also of 2, are called professional school and they literally give you what’s needed to go working in a factory.
I'm not sure I would trust my 13 year old self to make the best choice. Is that really how it works?
yes, the 4 most common choices are: scientific school (where they study math, physic, chemistry, tech), classical school (where they study ancient greek, literature, phylosophy etc), art school, contability school. but every school still has the basics: math, literature, science, english.. it's just that every specific school does more hours on specifical subjects. at my school (not very common) we did psychology, for example, and we studied what services exist to help the elderly, the children, and disabled people. sorry for my grammar, i can't write very well in english.
Load More Replies...I feel this will sell a lot of kids short. I've still no idea what I want to do.
Drinking In Public
You are holding a screw-cap wine bottle, which is forbidden in Italy. Get one with a cork, or the police will put you in jail
I didn't knew it's forbidden. Or you are joking ?
Load More Replies...There's absolutely nothing wrong with screw cap wine bottles. Some of the world's best wines come in such bottles and according to wine specialists (e.g. James Suckling) there's nothing wrong with this type. It might work even better for certain types of wine. ^^
Exactly. Screw cap wine, just like beer in cans is better for storing and preservation. It just takes some of the elegance out of the experience. Which either matters or doesn’t to a person. Now wine in a box is another story 🤮
Load More Replies...just to clarify Italians don't go around drinking bottle of wine while strolling around the city !! SUCH A STEREOTYPE !!
They're not nearly as likely to slam down a bottle of something and then throw the bottle at passing cars as we are in the USA
“I love that now I get to share travel tips, life in Italy, and all the fun and interesting things I learn as an American living here with so many people,” she told us.
When asked about whether she has grown accustomed to the initial culture shocks she experienced after moving to Florence, Kacie said that “other than the 'no-tipping' thing (it still feels very weird to not leave a tip!) I'd say for the most part I've gotten used to them—but I also find new things out everyday that shock me all over again.”
Getting Paid For Honeymoon Leave
No. When you get married you get 15 days of paid leave. AND you still have your 30-36 days of paid vacation for that year.
Load More Replies...I think most countries in the EU have tweaked that happy employees are more productive and loyal employees...
So basically, they offer all these benefits so that people can not only live, but also have a life.
This is great when you have a contract job. So many italian workers don't have proper job contracts, just "a progetto" contracts without real benefits
And, again, this is not applicable to all of our jobs and contracts. For example, I don't have this possibility
Some Jobs Provide Lunch Tickets
But in France, you can decide whether you want to buy some or not.
Load More Replies...People get those in Slovakia, too. Though they cannot be used for tobacco products and alcohol.
I think "vouchers" is the term we're looking for here... in the UK at least. Lunch vouchers are part of the school system here, not so much at places of work. Some employers give staff discount cards to eat for less at the work canteen/cafeteria...
Are luncheon vouchers not a thing any more?
Load More Replies...In Turkey almost every job provides you a lunch everyday in office cafeteria or gives you lunch tickets which you can eat at most restaurants or buy groceries if you wish. Also a lot of jobs like big factories provide special buses for going to work and return to home like school buses.
To buy everything in most malls. If you and working in a company that part of the payroll is a daily ti ket restaurant but they send you working in another comoany where they offer lunch in site, you can collect them and pay with them at the mall. At my times it was possible to buy literally everything. Just pay with them.
Mention this to a CEO or a politician in America and watch them implode at the thought of being that generous to the people.
Not Leaving A Tip At A Hair Salon
In Europe, the majority of worker jobs earn you enough not having to rely on tips - though to be fair, payment is not rising to keep up with expenses but that basically goes for every job. The service industry in the US is massively f****d up. Here in Germany, you tip waiters and taxi drivers, and that's it - around 10% are common. Waiters work for the restaurant so they get paid by the restaurant, not work for free to get paid by the generousity of the restaurant's customers.
Load More Replies...There are more professions in America beside waiters that relies on tips as salary? So if you are a waiter and going to the hair salon you have to pay them a tip from your own earned tips?
no you don't have to pay anyone in tips and hairdressers make much more depending on the place
Load More Replies...For those of us that don't live in a "tipping culture", it's actually very weird and almost a little off putting to be offered a tip. Not that it isn't appreciated, but it's very unexpected and wouldn't even have been considered by us, let alone expected. It feels like someone is overpaying by accident, and so you immediately as a reflex say something like "oh no, that is not necessary", and when they insist it's like a weird combo of feeling grateful, proud that you must have done a good job, and ever so slightly worried that this might count a theft. I don't find that moment comfortable at all, even if the money is useful later on.
In some nontipping countries, like New Zealand, it’s not discomforting. It’s just considered normal not to do it.
Load More Replies...The social media star and actress assured us that “At the end of the day, though, I love them. Culture differences are so cool and so interesting to learn.”
But there are numerous American things that Kacie really misses. “I love Italian coffee but sometimes I miss walking around and sipping a large to-go American coffee. I used Apple Pay all the time in NYC, but here Apple Pay isn't a thing! 'One-stop shops' like Target and Walmart don't exist here, so I had to adjust to going to multiple stores to get the things I needed.”
Going Out Only If Fully Ready
Leggings are fine if you have a tunic or long sweater to cover your butt. Leggings should never be worn in place of trousers.
Leggings are for sport or to hang around the house. If you go out on the street wear normal trousers PLEASE
This one is dumb. This is not a valid country comparison. She was the one who wanted to wear leggings. Just don’t. It annoys me to know end that you can go to a 5 star restaurant and be seated by someone I shorts, but I promise you there are Italians that wear leggings out to eat.
What kind of lunch are we talking about for this? obvs not fast food or street food, but i wouldn't want to change for just a regular lunch at a regular restaurant.
No dressing up for a friendly lunch... for a special dinner/occasion maybe.
Looking For A Job Right After School
That’s pretty cool. Not everyone does well in school, or even wants that path in life. My college years were a waste and I wish I didn’t have the pressure of having to go.
I have friends who went to University immediately after Highschool and they ended up having 4 different degrees before finding a different career. When I was 18 I started up a moving delivery company with my brother since I was helping him do them as a teen while home schooled. Did that for ten years before going into security
Yes, get educated for free by the company and climb ladders thanks to the education paid for by the company.
The main takeaway here is that Europeans are a lot less bothered about what kind of a job they do (these bills won't pay themselves), whereas in America people very much define themselves by their jobs.
That's not true. We are just not competitive about it. We want to work in jobs we like and are good at, not the ones that bring the most money or prestige.
Load More Replies...The US has managed to simultaneously make university degrees essential while devaluing their actual use in a career and taken public degrees that were established for the common good and made them prohibitively expensive.
Ok this is another dumb one. Comparisons on healthcare or paid leave are valid. But this is a personal choice. Many people don’t go to college. It’s not like “boy I need to move to Italy, they don’t need to go to college there”.
Yup, same in SA. I mean, it opens up more doors for you if you do study after school, but it's completely normal for people to work directly after school.
University isn't suitable for everyone... Learning through an apprenticeship (via college or not) or work right out of high school is a better path for many...
Adults Live With Their Parents Until Late Twenties
If you don't get married or don't have enough money (or simply your family and you like that way) you can even live with them forever. It's not a so rare event
That's usually the difference between latin countries and germanic countries... Youth prefer moving out as soon as they finish highschool in places like Denmark or Germany
Load More Replies...Normal in America too if you’re from an immigrant family lol. Kicking your own child out of the home at some age the government decides is so strange.
Live with parents until you've a permanent job and can afford your home
My husband (anche Guido, da Firenze) believes the same- however, the job market is very different here in the US verses Italia...( I'm assuming that you live in Italia)the concept of getting a permanent job in the US has become rare (very few people stay with the same company/industry for their entire careers anymore). And buying that first home is increasingly difficult. I write "first" home because it is also rare to stay in the same home for more than 8 years. Per esempio, While we (in our mid 50's) still own the home in Italy where my husband grew up, I have lived in 16+ over my lifetime. Splitting the difference between the two lifestyles We have raised our son (19)in the states, and he has only moved once, to a slightly larger house in the same neighborhood.
Load More Replies...In Serbia and all Balkan countries also, it is normal to live with your parents until you are set for life and have ability you move, and support your self in a healthy way or when you get married offcorse :)
I'm married to an Italian (Florentine) and he is having such a hard time accepting that our 19 year old son wants to move into a dorm for college (in town) and not just stay with us. (He's also astounded that my parents cut me off from any financial help the moment I graduated university. ) yes a cultural difference, but I'm grateful to have a husband who really believes in helping our son get a strong start in the world!
This is a reality more nowadays with the economic situation in many countries... if it works for the parents and adult child, then it's fine with me. I don't see the need for an 18 year old to be living on their own... those who attend school/college/university and live away from home will be in that situation from 18-21 or longer depending... Not everyone can afford to live on their own or wants to "house share" with strangers or their peers. And others are saving up to take on a mortgage...
“Like a true American, I put ranch dressing on everything, and you can't find ranch here (But actually one of my amazing followers sent me an entire box of it! So sweet). And Cheetos... I miss Cheetos so much,” Kacie said.
When asked about the American expat community in Florence, Kacie said that it’s indeed “a great little community here of American expats, which definitely helped make the transition living away from home easier.”
Some Stores Close From 12:30-3:30 Everyday
To be fair, this "siesta" only applied to Southern Europe (Italy, Spain) and is not practiced elsewhere. Germans actually find it annoying when stores in Italy are closed during the day
Siesta should be universal, is one of the greatest inventions of all time!
Load More Replies...It's not about siesta, is about the time. They open from 9:00 to 21:00/22:00. In order you can not pay for two salaries they made an midday break. As worker it suck. Anyway this is disappearing. Originally that comes from the horrible heat during summer and to save money about lunch.
Load More Replies...Drinking A Lot Of Coffee
Or the dutch, they drink non stop. Luckily they drink softer coffee and not espressos.
Load More Replies...Me whenever some says I probably dont want more after drinking 2 mugs
Coffee is becoming more popular in the UK since I moved here in the early 2000s when tea was the dominant hot beverage BY FAR. The Brits (in general) prefer their tea strong and their coffee weak... or strong and fancy (like Costa/Starbucks/Nero's). I prefer the opposite.
Keep in mind that expressos are quite strong. I usually drink 2 each day.
Compared to a regular coffee (55mg/100ml), espresso (133mg/100ml) contains more caffeine, but due to the size of the beverage a cup of coffee contains more caffeine (66mg - size 120ml) than a cup of espresso (33.25mg - size 25ml).
Load More Replies...Americans Order Water With Ice
i have eastern european relatives who insist that drinking water with ice in it gives you a sore throat, despite my having had water with ice my whole life and it never once giving me a sore throat. it's amazing to me how people just think things up and decide they're true
I think its more an Italian thing not to have.. Portugal is normal, Germany too, Croatia always gave ice in water on summer
I'm not American but like ice in every drink. Even splashed out on a fridge with an ice dispenser...
It’s no secret that Florence is a cultural playground for the international rich and has been since the 17th and 18th centuries when it was a highlight on the European Grand Tour. Today, the city that’s often called an open-air museum under the sky is loved by international expats, especially fellow Americans.
According to Celeste Oliphant, a luxury property consultant, “Florence has everything that the foreigner wants from Italy: art, culture, food, and the beautiful countryside of Tuscany on its doorstep.” Plus, she says it’s “less intimidating than southern Italy: it’s clean and there is less chaos.”
Having Sick Days
Actually, you have as many sick days as you need. Just call in sick and that's it.
Well, you have to provide a doctor's statement though
Load More Replies...In the UK, you don't even have to present a doctor's note unless you're off work for more than 5 days. If you feel unwell you just call in sick.
That should be the case (or like 2 days min). I was often too sick to go to work but I was as well too sick to ride to the doctor to get a note. How are you supposed to get a note if you are too dizzy to walk or too sick to leave the toilet?
Load More Replies...Yeah, that's such a weird concept, sick days. As if you can plan how many days you'll be sick in a year. I'm glad we can just call in sick when we are, you know... SICK. Whether it's 1 or 365 days a year.
Same in Brasil, if u prove that u are sick you don't have to go to work.
Let's hope that after the COVID-19 pandemic has settled down/petered out, people will take sick days when they need them and not infect everyone else at their place of work. Maybe wear a mask when you have a cold?
I wish but I doubt that it happens. Although my grand aunt is vaccinated already so she usually doesn’t wear the mask if somebody visits but last week she had a cold and she wore it. I was proud of her.
Load More Replies...A day when you are sick is a sick day. You boss does not decide /predict when you are ill or not.
Where I work we have six months of sick days per year, but we need to self-certify and get a doctor's note if it's over two weeks.
Be prepared to show up with a Dr's note to return or better yet, did you know that your boss can call the police to go to your home and knock on the door to see if you are indeed at home sick.
Charging For Water
Mineral water, that is. You do not get charged for tap water. But if you order "water", you will get some (possibly even rather fancy) spring water.
Exactly. I like a nice sparkling water to be available but often ask for a jug of tap water for the table to share. Never been a problem.
Load More Replies...On the other hand, we don't ask you to pay the wages of our staff.
Many pubs in the UK give free soda water or soft drinks to the designated driver/sober person in the party... Tap water is available in most restaurants free of charge. A moot point for me as I prefer fizzy/sparkling water which comes in bottles...
I've been charged for water my whole life...well not my WHOLE life but ya get the deal
Load More Replies...Why are you complaining ? You don't pay for tips but you pay for table setting plus water !!
Drinking A Glass Of Wine In Middle Of The Day
Why wouldn't it be acceptable to drink wine on a Tuesday at 1:00 PM? Next you'll be telling me I can't drink wine on Wednesday at 8:00 AM. I have worked for over 40 years to earn that right.
only on night shift since your technically at 8pm while everyone else is at 8am
Load More Replies...I can't drink alcohol at lunch (a pint of beer/cider or glass of wine) when I'm working because it makes me want to take a nap...
When I was in Scotland, when I went downstairs for hotel breakfast at 8am, the whole bar was filled with businesspeople in suits having a pint of stout before going in to work.
Now you know why some places are closed for so long in the middle of the day.
The bottom line is not everyone drinks alcohol to get drunk. Having said that, all I need is a single beer and my concentration goes out of the window.
Many Americans come to the idyllic city to study and there are more English-speaking education institutions that you could imagine. But due to the covid pandemic, the future of the American students is now unclear as many left and flew back to their home countries for quarantine, where they completed their courses online. The question is whether they will ever return to Florence for studies.
It turns out that the sizable population of American students in the Florence and Tuscany area has a much bigger impact on the region's economy than you could think. According to Fabrizio Ricciardelli, a secretary-treasurer of the Association of American College and University Programs in Italy (AACUPI), “An average of 15,000 students are hosted by North American and Australian study abroad programs in the Florence and Prato areas, creating an added value of 200 million euro in expenditures that benefit the region, along with 5,000 jobs.”
It's Ok For Kids To Drink A Small Glass Of Wine
i was allowed sips of wine and beer as a kid and i think it was a good thing. They never gave me more than that, but it made the whole alcohol thing seem like no big deal. My friends who weren't allowed to touch a drop went nuts with it when they were finally able to drink legally, meanwhile i've been drunk maybe three times in my life.
In italy we're more relaxed about alchool. Of course nobody will let a 10yo drink wine but nobody will be bothered to drink in front of kids. Plus we drink only when eating...
I remember getting 7up with a little shot of cherry brandy (mostly for colour) at Christmas when I was a child in The Netherlands from around age 8... My parents taught me moderation. I never was a heavy boozer like a lot of my high school and university peers.
Well, try and live in England. Kids drink beer as it was water. :-)
My dad let us try some alcohol to make us hate it, but that backfired on my little brother. It tasted like Sharpies.
14 Year Old Kids Can Drive Small-Engine Motorcycles And Scooters
I am from Alberta Canada. At 14, kids can drive a car, a pick-up truck, a motorcycle or scooter. At 14. 😱
Yeah as long as theres a learners. When I was a teen my brother had his full drivers at 16 and then shitty rich kids ruined it for everyone and now you have a graduated license even at 35
Load More Replies...And if you grew up in an agricultural community, you were probably driving well before that. One of my cousins drove the feed truck by himself when he was 9. He'd put the truck in low-low and crawl out the back window to fork hay off for the cattle.
well, yes. our kids learned to drive huge tractors on the farm, and you had to drive an old pickup truck to get to the tractor. so , yeah, kids start driving and learning responsibility early here in the rural US
Not Leaving A Tip At A Restaurant
I live in Spain and have worked in the hospitality business as a waiter, and doorman. Some people leave tip some don't but it's not meant to make up your wage. I like the idea because it's like a customer satisfaction survey. The more tips the Waiter get the happier the customers are. I worked at many places were the manager checked the tip to see who made more, more tips means they are generally friendlier.
Load More Replies...The enployees have a minimum wage. You can leave a tip if you liked the service.
Ok this is really an Italian and Spanish thing not to leave a tip. In other European countries it is customary to leave a tip, around 10% is considered normal if you have a meal, less is ok with coffee or beverages. Not that German waiters need it, they get paid well enough to live off the wage, but a tip is considered a customary extra for the service. If you don't leave a tip in Germany it means you're either ignorant or the service was really bad
That's what wages are for. If your boss says you are supposed to be payed by tips, then they are just a fraud.
its often at least: nothing at all... Workers get paid in Europe
Load More Replies...Try combining losing this all value and putting tourism on hold due to the pandemic, causing economic uncertainties far greater than the region could afford. After all, the number of tourist overnight stays in the city of Florence has been growing over the last years, from 12.2 million in 2012 to roughly 15.8 million in 2019. But according to the recent data, tourist arrivals, including both international and domestic tourists, decreased by roughly 71.5 percent in this city in 2020.
Average Gas Price Is 1.51 Euro Per Liter
I just drove past a gas station and the price was $2.69 per gallon. There's no one US price; the states tend to differ, even if they're not geographically far apart, likely because of added taxes.
Load More Replies...There are no fuel subsidies in most countries, so you see the full price. Also, net costs are higher as most of the EU has to import all its fuel from overseas. That's one reason electric cars are incredibly popular already.
It's Normal To Have Dinner Later In The Evening
8 isn’t that late in the evening to me. 8pm is like peak dinner hour in my book.
In America, you might invite you guests over at like 5 30, then eat all sorts of appetizers and chit-chat and then you eat dinner at 6 or 6 30 ish.
Load More Replies...8 pm is just the regular hour for dinner, not late. My daughter finishes her sport activities at 8pm. When i didn't have kids i used to have dinner at 9 pm during the week.
I'd be so hungry to wait that long. In my family, we usually eat dinner as soon as my father comes home, so around 4 pm
"at 8" actually means, show up around 8. Food doesn't show up for about 30 mins, and it will go for a couple of hours. When I lived in Belgium, going out after dinner was about 11:30pm.
8? Im thinking about what to cook for dinner at that time. Dinner at 9 or 9:30 at the earliest. In the UK i tried their tea time (about 6) and by the time I go to bed I'm starving. On the other hand I'll have s late full Scottish breakfast and can just skip lunch :) SAOR ALBA :)
It's Common To Eat Every Part Of The Animal
Ohh, the beef tongue is delicious! We first use it to make broth (with other meats), and then we eat the boiled meats as a second course. (at least in my home)
Yeah, beef tongue is actually pretty good. My mom would place it in a jar loaded with spices and a little water, and then boil the jar and all in pot.
Load More Replies...Nope. It’s a tradition coming from ancient times called "poors cooking", of leftover meals. The part of the butched animals rich people won’t eat, tongue, tail, brain, testicles, stomach. Also we have a "leftover pasta recipe"... wich is called "of the bitches" (apologize, that’s its name) because it’s ... made in a hurry with leftovers. Traditions put it as something fast with what you can pick in the kitchen... in beetween clients.
Puttanesca!! Same thing happens with gnocchi. According to my great grandma (my family came from Italy), gnocchi was also poor people's food, at least when she was young, which was about a hundred years ago!
Load More Replies...I've never had an Italian preparation, but Mexican lengua tacos are pretty good!
My mother in law stews beef tongue in a fresh tomato sauce. It's amazing!
Bidet In The Bathroom
I think it's compulsory in Italian houses. It's a struggle when you go abroad and you don't find any (Luckily I think that it is pretty common in other part of south Europe btw). It's like a part of our identity ahahah
Its for basic hygiene, how you suppose to CLEAN your butt without one?? :)
Load More Replies...Proper hygiene should be mandatory. Toilet Paper simply can't do the same job (you can't always have a shower )
Bidet or some similar variation is so fantastic. You clean up faster and better, there's far less wasted paper clogging the city plumbing, etc.
Don't Go Out If Not Fully Ready
I've seen this in the UK as well! As someone from a warm country, I was practically suffering from hypothermia for three years. It was amazing seeing people walking around with wet hair, blue skin, shorts in November and yet somehow manage not to die.
Try going to Scotland, for the weekend, in winter, in a city. The girls are a hardy bunch who will wear short dresses without jackets in the middle of winter and not feel the cold. And there are men who wear shorts and a t-shirt all year long, no matter how cold the weather. We just stop feeling it after a while.
Load More Replies...my grandmother truly believed that going outside with wet hair would make you sick. just a direct relationship between wet hair, the outdoors, and illness.
Yeah, my mother too. That was just a superstition back then.
Load More Replies...Imagine the culture shock of someone coming here and going to a Walmart!
I think wet hair girl is the US version and the other one is the Italian
Load More Replies...I never dry my hair!! It would take 40 mins to straighten it, and if I just dry it naturally, I'd have a 6" long fuzzy mess.
I don't handle cold well. One winter i was coming home from work. It was snowing, about -10C and i was in full attire - winter coat, wool scarf, beanie, gloves. Lo an behold, my neighbour waltzes out to have a smoke (which basically is 2-3 minutes of just standing there). In a short sleeve T-shirt, thin sweat pants and slippers.
For food ? South. For wine ? North. Fish ? NorthWest coast. Beer ? NortEast inland. People ? Spain. 🤣
Load More Replies...As a spanish person it was great to see the differences and similarities between both countries. I would love to see more of these comparison but between european countries.
I saw more similarities than differences, it's practically the same
Load More Replies...As an expat living in Italy for several years every single one of these rings so true. My favourite is how the boyfriend will ALWAYS carry the girlfriend's purse. Usually because he puts his stuff in it and then feels badly. Oh and mothers carrying their kid's backpacks to and from school.
Love! I don’t like cities but I could live in Florence the rest of my life.
As italian, that’s not the most comfy place I can think of, but it’s up to personal taste.
Load More Replies...There'd be even more money available for Italians if the government started taxing the Catholic Church and took Rome back from the Church.
Wine. Motorcycles. Oh holy f**k I'm coming *packs water with no ice bcz i hate cold water*
