Bringing a bill unprompted would be like saying you overstayed your welcome. And anyway, how do they know you won't want another glass of wine?

I once went to Spain, and the tip WASN'T REQUIRED. Why do they call it a 'tip' in America if it's required? They should just call it service fee.

Technically, a tip is not *required*, but expected. It stands for "To Insure Prompt Service", so, basically, if you want prompt service, you tip. If you get bad service, you are not obligated to tip. Technically....however, the problem (in many states) is that servers are paid less than minimum wage, so if you *don't* tip (no matter how bad the service) it's frowned upon. The whole system is flawed and servers should be paid a living wage, and THEN tipping is actually optional

Years ago, a friend and I werde eating outside in April. It was the first truly sunny and warm weekend of the year, so we were enjoying it to the max. At some point, the waiter came and apologised, he had forgotten about us. We told him not to worry and ordered dessert and tea and stayed another good 30-40 minutes.

Wait, in the USA, they bring it when they see that you are done eating? I've been at a restaurant for about 6-7 hours and had 2 meals there and lots of drinks because we were just hanging out with friends

From my experience of living in America all my life (dear god please help me escape) In some restaurants, they ask if you're ready for the check (In some they'll ask if you want anything else or dessert before) and in fast food places, it's paid before-hand.

It happens I’m sure, but I wouldn’t consider this a common practice in America that warrants this comparison. I owned restaurants and we would ask people at the beginning “would you like me to bring the check when you are done ordering?” especially at lunch. Many people had limited time and since it was busy they didn’t want to have to flag you down to get the check when they were a in a hurry.

It's not free - it's taxpayer-funded. Like schools, infrastructure, defence, fire/rescue, etc. It's cheaper that way, and easier to access, train for, maintain and improve. 74 nations do this, all of the top 30, with one exception. That one exception has allowed for-profit insurance companies to kneel on the public's neck for decades.

The healthcare system is America is terrible. I am diabetic and insulin has seen the greatest rise in cost over the last 20 years. The ACA provided low premiums but very high deductibles. Meaning you basically have close to the same you would pay with a high premium anyway. Affordable healthcare and socialized medicine are great if you do not have a chronic illness. With that everyone needs to get over this impression about socialized medicine being “free”. This is not at all a comparison like the US knows wtf it is doing, because it doesn’t. But most developed countries with socialized medicine; do not pay 100% of costs, people still get private healthcare because of this, they have strict policies on services provided to immigrants in their countries to control costs, deal with much smaller populations leading to lower costs overall, coverage for coverage for chronic illness in many countries depend on your country of origin while you are there and so forth. Then there is medicine...

Actually it is virtually unlimited sick days as long as a doctor certifies you're sick. And 4 weeks paid vacation isn't even that much. We get up to 36 days a year of paid vacation which counts as 6 weeks

Four weeks of paid vacation is pretty low in European terms. Many employees get 25 days, some even 30. And sick leave is also several weeks (in fact, if you get sick on holidays, it will count as sick leave and you will get your holiday days back).

Besides the 4 weeks paid vacations, some countries pay 14 salaries: 12 months + holidays bonus + Christmas bonus. Meaning, for example, that in December they get 2 salaries (December + Christmas). Portugal. Of course, here the salary is also low... pros and cons ;)

I don’t really get this one. I mean ok, but I wouldn’t say America doesn’t care about your life because you don’t get gluten free vouchers. Also if a doctor diagnosis you with celiac it would of course make sense to stay away from gluten. But having been in the service industry I can tell you gluten intolerance is one of the conditions that many people say they have that really don’t.

I never really liked that system. It is true that the students learn a lot in depth the subjects that they need for their trade. But at least in belgium there is a lot of prejudices for kids who chose paths that are considered "easy" (like building or hairdresser). Also kids at 13 are way too young to know what they want. I would find better a mix system, where kids until 16yo study together (with some optative subjects) and then in the last two years they focus on their specialisation.

It's a hangover from trade schools and apprentice-master systems. Not kidding, that's ingrained in their subconscious. I sort of wish that happened in Canada - I got a uni education and could have been a lot happier in a skilled trade.

I think there's more to this "choice" than the child choosing by themselves. If it's like the system in my homeland, the teachers, parents and child together decide which academic stream/specialism is best suited to the student's abilities and interests.

Yes, we hae 5 years of elementary school, 3 of (so called) "medium school", and the you can pick 5 years high school which will give you access to college, which only 2 of those (called classical and scientific) will only give you access to university. Nothing good for a job if that’s your wish. At my times there were also shorter high schools of 3 and 4 years but didn’t give access to university. The 3 years but the are also of 2, are called professional school and they literally give you what’s needed to go working in a factory.

yes, the 4 most common choices are: scientific school (where they study math, physic, chemistry, tech), classical school (where they study ancient greek, literature, phylosophy etc), art school, contability school. but every school still has the basics: math, literature, science, english.. it's just that every specific school does more hours on specifical subjects. at my school (not very common) we did psychology, for example, and we studied what services exist to help the elderly, the children, and disabled people. sorry for my grammar, i can't write very well in english.

Exactly. Screw cap wine, just like beer in cans is better for storing and preservation. It just takes some of the elegance out of the experience. Which either matters or doesn’t to a person. Now wine in a box is another story 🤮

I think "vouchers" is the term we're looking for here... in the UK at least. Lunch vouchers are part of the school system here, not so much at places of work. Some employers give staff discount cards to eat for less at the work canteen/cafeteria...

In Turkey almost every job provides you a lunch everyday in office cafeteria or gives you lunch tickets which you can eat at most restaurants or buy groceries if you wish. Also a lot of jobs like big factories provide special buses for going to work and return to home like school buses.

To buy everything in most malls. If you and working in a company that part of the payroll is a daily ti ket restaurant but they send you working in another comoany where they offer lunch in site, you can collect them and pay with them at the mall. At my times it was possible to buy literally everything. Just pay with them.

In Europe, the majority of worker jobs earn you enough not having to rely on tips - though to be fair, payment is not rising to keep up with expenses but that basically goes for every job. The service industry in the US is massively f****d up. Here in Germany, you tip waiters and taxi drivers, and that's it - around 10% are common. Waiters work for the restaurant so they get paid by the restaurant, not work for free to get paid by the generousity of the restaurant's customers.

There are more professions in America beside waiters that relies on tips as salary? So if you are a waiter and going to the hair salon you have to pay them a tip from your own earned tips?

For those of us that don't live in a "tipping culture", it's actually very weird and almost a little off putting to be offered a tip. Not that it isn't appreciated, but it's very unexpected and wouldn't even have been considered by us, let alone expected. It feels like someone is overpaying by accident, and so you immediately as a reflex say something like "oh no, that is not necessary", and when they insist it's like a weird combo of feeling grateful, proud that you must have done a good job, and ever so slightly worried that this might count a theft. I don't find that moment comfortable at all, even if the money is useful later on.

My husband (anche Guido, da Firenze) believes the same- however, the job market is very different here in the US verses Italia...( I'm assuming that you live in Italia)the concept of getting a permanent job in the US has become rare (very few people stay with the same company/industry for their entire careers anymore). And buying that first home is increasingly difficult. I write "first" home because it is also rare to stay in the same home for more than 8 years. Per esempio, While we (in our mid 50's) still own the home in Italy where my husband grew up, I have lived in 16+ over my lifetime. Splitting the difference between the two lifestyles We have raised our son (19)in the states, and he has only moved once, to a slightly larger house in the same neighborhood.

This is a reality more nowadays with the economic situation in many countries... if it works for the parents and adult child, then it's fine with me. I don't see the need for an 18 year old to be living on their own... those who attend school/college/university and live away from home will be in that situation from 18-21 or longer depending... Not everyone can afford to live on their own or wants to "house share" with strangers or their peers. And others are saving up to take on a mortgage...

Compared to a regular coffee (55mg/100ml), espresso (133mg/100ml) contains more caffeine, but due to the size of the beverage a cup of coffee contains more caffeine (66mg - size 120ml) than a cup of espresso (33.25mg - size 25ml).

It’s no secret that Florence is a cultural playground for the international rich and has been since the 17th and 18th centuries when it was a highlight on the European Grand Tour. Today, the city that’s often called an open-air museum under the sky is loved by international expats, especially fellow Americans.

According to Celeste Oliphant, a luxury property consultant, “Florence has everything that the foreigner wants from Italy: art, culture, food, and the beautiful countryside of Tuscany on its doorstep.” Plus, she says it’s “less intimidating than southern Italy: it’s clean and there is less chaos.”

Yeah, that's such a weird concept, sick days. As if you can plan how many days you'll be sick in a year. I'm glad we can just call in sick when we are, you know... SICK. Whether it's 1 or 365 days a year.

Let's hope that after the COVID-19 pandemic has settled down/petered out, people will take sick days when they need them and not infect everyone else at their place of work. Maybe wear a mask when you have a cold?

I wish but I doubt that it happens. Although my grand aunt is vaccinated already so she usually doesn’t wear the mask if somebody visits but last week she had a cold and she wore it. I was proud of her.

Many pubs in the UK give free soda water or soft drinks to the designated driver/sober person in the party... Tap water is available in most restaurants free of charge. A moot point for me as I prefer fizzy/sparkling water which comes in bottles...

Many Americans come to the idyllic city to study and there are more English-speaking education institutions that you could imagine. But due to the covid pandemic, the future of the American students is now unclear as many left and flew back to their home countries for quarantine, where they completed their courses online. The question is whether they will ever return to Florence for studies.

It turns out that the sizable population of American students in the Florence and Tuscany area has a much bigger impact on the region's economy than you could think. According to Fabrizio Ricciardelli, a secretary-treasurer of the Association of American College and University Programs in Italy (AACUPI), “An average of 15,000 students are hosted by North American and Australian study abroad programs in the Florence and Prato areas, creating an added value of 200 million euro in expenditures that benefit the region, along with 5,000 jobs.”

I live in Spain and have worked in the hospitality business as a waiter, and doorman. Some people leave tip some don't but it's not meant to make up your wage. I like the idea because it's like a customer satisfaction survey. The more tips the Waiter get the happier the customers are. I worked at many places were the manager checked the tip to see who made more, more tips means they are generally friendlier.

Ok this is really an Italian and Spanish thing not to leave a tip. In other European countries it is customary to leave a tip, around 10% is considered normal if you have a meal, less is ok with coffee or beverages. Not that German waiters need it, they get paid well enough to live off the wage, but a tip is considered a customary extra for the service. If you don't leave a tip in Germany it means you're either ignorant or the service was really bad

That’s different from usa. You usually leave a small tip in cash, it’s not a voice in your bill and it’s not due. You usually are hapoy to leave it if you’re happy how the service was, it’ more personal to the waiter but then the place shares among all waiters.

Try combining losing this all value and putting tourism on hold due to the pandemic, causing economic uncertainties far greater than the region could afford. After all, the number of tourist overnight stays in the city of Florence has been growing over the last years, from 12.2 million in 2012 to roughly 15.8 million in 2019. But according to the recent data, tourist arrivals, including both international and domestic tourists, decreased by roughly 71.5 percent in this city in 2020.

There are no fuel subsidies in most countries, so you see the full price. Also, net costs are higher as most of the EU has to import all its fuel from overseas. That's one reason electric cars are incredibly popular already.

Gas is usually expensive in most countries, due to taxes and also as a way to make people walk / take public transportation. Most countries aren't built like the U.S, where people drive places where they could perfectly walk to.

Nope. It’s a tradition coming from ancient times called "poors cooking", of leftover meals. The part of the butched animals rich people won’t eat, tongue, tail, brain, testicles, stomach. Also we have a "leftover pasta recipe"... wich is called "of the bitches" (apologize, that’s its name) because it’s ... made in a hurry with leftovers. Traditions put it as something fast with what you can pick in the kitchen... in beetween clients.

In Japan as well. Although in Italy, they eat pig’s cheek (guanciale).. necessary for a real carbonara!

I love eating the pig face, ears, cheeks and tail or the cheeks and tail of the cow. The butcher here in belgium looks at me very weird sometimes.

Why would you NOT eat/ use everything? It's a waste not to do so.

I think it's compulsory in Italian houses. It's a struggle when you go abroad and you don't find any (Luckily I think that it is pretty common in other part of south Europe btw). It's like a part of our identity ahahah

Proper hygiene should be mandatory. Toilet Paper simply can't do the same job (you can't always have a shower )

Bidet or some similar variation is so fantastic. You clean up faster and better, there's far less wasted paper clogging the city plumbing, etc.

They don’t need this in Japan because the washing machine is incorporated to the toilet (washlet, is called)

I've seen this in the UK as well! As someone from a warm country, I was practically suffering from hypothermia for three years. It was amazing seeing people walking around with wet hair, blue skin, shorts in November and yet somehow manage not to die.

Try going to Scotland, for the weekend, in winter, in a city. The girls are a hardy bunch who will wear short dresses without jackets in the middle of winter and not feel the cold. And there are men who wear shorts and a t-shirt all year long, no matter how cold the weather. We just stop feeling it after a while.

my grandmother truly believed that going outside with wet hair would make you sick. just a direct relationship between wet hair, the outdoors, and illness.

I never dry my hair!! It would take 40 mins to straighten it, and if I just dry it naturally, I'd have a 6" long fuzzy mess.

I don't handle cold well. One winter i was coming home from work. It was snowing, about -10C and i was in full attire - winter coat, wool scarf, beanie, gloves. Lo an behold, my neighbour waltzes out to have a smoke (which basically is 2-3 minutes of just standing there). In a short sleeve T-shirt, thin sweat pants and slippers.
