Cities may have loads of opportunities and energy but have also been linked to a variety of issues affecting human well-being. Traffic noise, commutes, and pollution all end up affecting our stress levels and even our sleeping habits. City planners have the responsibility to ensure that we don’t all go crazy just living our lives.

As awareness about urban development grows, different online groups have formed that are devoted to showcasing the best designs or shaming the worst. We also reached out to Professor Alan March from the Melbourne School of Design to learn more about urban planning in general. So get comfortable and be sure to upvote your favorite examples. Drive at or under the speed limit and you'll be entered into a lottery where the prize fund comes from the fines that speeders pay. Average speed reduced from 32 km/h to 25 km/h (a reduction of 22%)

Fake, have never happened even though the idea might actually work! The picture is from Stockholm where I live and that's not a camera connected to that speed sign. And even if the picture have nothing to do with the text, it is still fake! All speed cameras in Sweden is controlled by the police and the police have no lottery. And you can get a ticket if you drive to slow!

It's not s fake picture per se, but there's no actual lottery. It was a PR/marketing campaign in 2011. https://guldagget.se/bidrag/rolighetsstipendiethastighetslotteriet/

This was a PR campaign to lower speeds and start a debate about speeding (it worked to reducera speeds) and how to make it fun to do the right thing ("the fun theory, as they call it). There's no actual lottery from what I know. The campaign was awarded a diploma in 2011 at a Swedish marketing gala, Guldägget ('the Golden egg'). https://guldagget.se/bidrag/rolighetsstipendiethastighetslotteriet/

Great idea. You can hardly see a pedestrian at the crossing at night here in the UK. So many crossings don't have a light shining above the path.

This one is worst if there is no other light around ... In Slovakia they are most of the times triggered also by car passing by. So like 99% of times there is no pedestrian and this thing is blinking at you ... If there is no overhead light then it just blind you. As it is blinking it is very hard to focus to see if there is pedestrian or not ... In most installations it is reducing safety, not improving ... It will be much safer if it was triggered only by button, which imply there is really pedestrian on crossing.

Hah. Most of the zebra crossings in rural France are almost invisible and not in any way highlighted, not like this or with street lighting. So French people often ignore them and cross the road wherever they want, and drivers may not always notice the crossing so care must be taken, unlike in neighbouring Switzerland where a pedestrian may cross without even looking fir oncoming traffic, so confident they are that their 'right of way' will be upheld.

I dream of that for my hometown. 100 years ago the gorgeous public park right in the city centre was giving direct access to the banks of the river. There even was a real local culture around navigating the river, for economical or leisure purposes. But in the late 1960's it was decided that France's biggest highway (basically connecting Paris to Marseille) should go right there in the middle, cutting the park - and almost the whole town, actually - from the river forever. I call that an urbanistic suicide - I mean, the developers were not necessarily ill-intentioned, but they deemed road traffic more important than anything else and the consequences are just monstrous.

The US is SO far behind on this. When the Interstate system was built in the 1950s and 60s, the planners (no racism here) DELIBERATELY put the highways through areas of cities that were mostly populated by people of color. It is truly disgusting. In the town I live near, the interstate was put through a thriving, working-class black neighborhood. there has been a proposal to tear down the section of the highway that is the worst offender. But the suburb NIMBYS have repeatedly blocked it in court. There have been numerous multi-million dollar studies, mostly backed by majority white suburbs, and the highway STILL stands.

Toronto has a similar highway (Gardiner/QEW) right in front of the city waterfront. It's taking too much valuable space on lake shore, creating much noise and pollution, and it's cracking due to years of poor maintenance. I wish the city will do something to fix this issue.

We asked Professor Alan March to give a few examples of what are core principles he believes help a city become more livable for its residents. “High enough density to allow services such as schools, parks, infrastructure, healthcare, etc to be provided at an affordable cost. Diverse types of housing and affordable housing. A mix of rent-to-buy, rent, and purchase options, in addition to legal structures that allow co-ownership between non-family members. The ability to move housing according to life circumstances without excessive costs such as stamp duties and other fees.”

“Low energy use, access to a range of green and other recreational spaces. Excellent schools, jobs, transit, and stable representative democracy. Help for poorer, disabled, elderly, and other people with limited life choices. A relatively equal society whereby birth circumstances in terms of location and Socio-Economic Status of parents do not set out one’s life course,” he added as important things for city planners to design for.

... one of the few nice locations in Berlin... But, in general, the buildings from the 20's have some truly appealing features - centralized heating was common from then on, the flats in the buildings aren't all that small, there are some pretty large ones among - and the houses look cool, depending on the method and style of building, of course. Nothing can truly beat Brick Expressionism, although that's not what's applied here, it's worth being mentioned.

I used to live close to the top of California Street and worked at a restaurant down at the bottom of the hill. After long shifts, I knew I still had to conquer the climb! I LOVED my apartment and enjoyed my job but, on my way home, I had to take a deep breath once the incline started and tell myself to just put my head down and suck it up - I'd be home in just a few minutes. All that being said, I love love love my hometown and feel lucky to have grown up in SF!

As the popularity of walkable cities spreads, many urban areas are making streets smaller, removing parking lots, and expanding bicycle infrastructure and walkways. The most hardline advocates actually want to fully remove most cars from urban areas and replace them with robust and extensive public transportation alternatives. We wanted to know his take on the growing anti-car movement and whether it is too extreme of a solution.

It's because here, the object that should be flexible, that should accomodate the other, is the one that is flexible and accomodates the other, while more often, it's the other way round - trees being cut down and replaced by low-maintainance ones that grow pretty fast, in order to straighten a bicycle path or a street or so. We, our entire civilization, should already be at a stage where working around nature instead of relocating or - worse - destroying it should be a given to everything that this is possibly appliable to.

I've been here. I think this is Victoria Street, which is said to have inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series. The buildings are narrow but each one is beautiful, and so fun to explore. It's a lovely walk <3

“The idea of a carless city has merit. Designing the city with few or no cars will mean we emit considerably fewer greenhouse gases and have cheaper and more equitable transport via mass transit and walking (and for the many people who cannot drive for many reasons). We will waste fewer resources on car spaces and freeways, get to know our neighbors better, have lower obesity in children (eg walking to school) and adults, and have fewer accidents and other health impacts from pollution. It will depend on cities being designed properly to achieve this.”

Lastly, for some contrast, we were curious to know if he had any examples of cities that made terrible design choices. Professor Alan March specified that Houston was a ‘good’ example of a bad city, due to “environmental degradation, huge inequality of wealth and housing provisions, gated communities for rich.” It also suffers from an overreliance on cars, as over 75% of residents have stated that they need a motor vehicle to go about their daily tasks.

America is a very car centric place. Most cities are not planned out to be walkable. New York City might be an exception but LA for example huge city, not walkable. A lot of European and Asian countries are much better at planning their cities.

I lived in a beautiful townhouse but whoever were the landscapers were idiots. On the sides of every entrance walkway they had planted black cherry trees. All season long you had to walk through all the smashed, rotting cherries that had fallen to the ground. And living in the US, not everybody takes their shoes off at the doorway, especially teenagers!

One benefit of the pandemic. My town blocked off streets in the historic area so that restaurants and cafes could have outdoor seating. It worked out so well, they decided to keep it. Now it's a pretty, flower-filled area for strolling, shopping, and dining. Small boutiques have moved into the empty storefronts and thrived because of the great foot traffic.

That must have really helped with parking. If I was a business owner, I'd be none too pleased that customer access was greatly impacted. I'd love to know how badly that effected their revenue. I'm disabled and wouldn't be able to shop there any longer with no close place to park.

The abundance of cars on the street creates congestion that had led to Houston having one of the longest average commute times in the United States. This is a result of a comparatively low urban density compared to other US cities, as services, jobs, and public facilities are rarely close together. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, the city authorities are planning to introduce more bicycle infrastructure.

If there was a way that no more car registrations were approved by the Transport Authorities. Or at least no family of two adults could own more than one car, or similar. Excessive car ownership and usage is a problem. As well as the logic of owners that since a new car has been acquired, the universe owes them parking spaces.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, but not everyone can bike. Or walk. Or scoot. Or do anything but drive. The elderly, those who are disabled, those with chronic conditions, hell, those who have to bring a lot of stuff to work one day a week. So entirely taking away the option to park isn't helping everyone

    Rob Steenvoorde
    Community Member
2 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The city of Amsterdam is replacing parking spaces for cars by (green) pedestrian zones or bike parking. But parking spots especially for disables people are being kept, or made available nearby. A lot of people in Amsterdam don't even own a car, owning one (and parking) is expensive and parking your car near your house is nearly impossible is some neighborhoods. And... if you even have been in an Amsterdam house you'll know the steep, narrow stairs in the historic buildings are a bigger problem for disabled people, not the parking spots. If people need a car some of them use car sharing or rent a car, use a bakfiets (transport bike) or park their car outside of town. I mean, it's pretty simple. These houses were build in the beginning of the 20th century, and those streets were not designed for disabled people, nor to accommodate cars. People who want to park their car right in front of their house usually don't live in those parts of Amsterdam, or not in Amsterdam at all.

This is in the centre of Amsterdam, so if you would live 25 miles away from work. You would just use the good public transport network. Those houses were built before everyone owned a car, so there's just no space for everyone to drive. People that just have to have a car have to live a bit further from the city centre in a newer neighbourhood.

But this might not be suitable for all cities. In many Canadian cities, you literally cannot cycle in Winter times due to coldness, snow/ice. However, we should encourage people to use public transit when possible.

I’m not disagreeing with your point about this not being feasible for every city, but people can and do bike in the winter even with snow. You need extra warm clothing and probably should have winter tires for your bike, but it is possible.

You don't even need solar. I worked in a building where the floors had generators powered by footsteps. Stepping on the floor transformed the kinetic energy from your foot into electricity. I am sure we could do something similar with sidewalks.

We have these all around Central Washington University, but they aren't powered by electricity. The student apartments on campus as well as many of the class rooms are heated in the winter with boilers and steam. The pipes run from a Central Services Station through out the campus under the sidewalks. That way there is a double benefit. Warms the buildings and melts the snow on the sidewalks/crosswalks making getting to class safer.

Urban settings already change the local climate dramatically with the amount of heat they give off. Does anyone know if thus increases that? Also where I live, we'd be talking about a lot of electricity. We still have 45 cm of snow in the back yard

There are soo many narrow streets in Central London (UK). When I used to live/work there (in the 80s), there was so much congestion/traffic jams and frequent car towing due to stupid parking decisions. With the Underground and regular buses, I could never understand why anyone would want to drive and park in Central London (parking was extremely expensive even back in the day, and you couldn't continuously feed your parking meter- there was a time limit).

It really can be excellent living in a densely populated area. That is provided it has all of the amenities you need within a short walk, cycle ride, or bus journey away. Imagine not having to drive 40 minutes to a store, and 40 minutes back again just to buy some milk. It could take 5 minutes instead, and you get a nice little chunk of exercise too.

As a (really terrible) golfer, I much prefer playing in courses in the countryside/mountains, for reasons like this. They often take up space in the middle of towns and cities that could be used for other purposes, whether it be parks, housing, or something else. Also, as a personal preference, I prefer the silence/peace that comes from not being surrounded by buildings.

These car-less cities are a dream worth pursuing, but that entails something else for which I see no thought ever given in any of these pictures: People who aren't single. If you can get a job and an apartment/flat/condo right next to each other, great for you! But married people can't expect BOTH people to get jobs in the same neighborhood. ONE of them is going to need a car. Yeah, yeah, yeah, public transportation. Great, work on it. But I've used public transportation for about 15 years when I was younger. And even in a couple of the few cities in America with subways everywhere, it's still a colossal pain in the a*s. And it's still incredibly easy to feel utterly trapped by the big city. And also keep in mind that every home in this neighborhood probably RENTS (as in pouring money down the drain) for about $30/sq ft/month (or some equivalent) or more.

Yes! So many buildings in the US are just nasty looking. Then we head to Europe and live the architecture. We need better planning and architecture here.

Those chimneys are "Las Tres Xemeneies" of Sant Adrià de Besòs, part of a power station that supplied energy to the city of Barcelona in the 1980s and 1990s. The power plant had a troubled history, during construction a worker's strike was repressed in blood by Francoist police. The building has been donated to the community after ceasing operations and -since their architecture is quite peculiar, they are a landmark and the tear down cost is quite too high for the municipality- there are talks about preserving them as industrial archaeology.

It looks visually pleasing, I agree. But I can´t imagine it to be a good concept in practice. what if a dozen or so cars want to get it in at the same time? Do they block the whole round about?

My state's putting in roundabouts everywhere, and I am finding that people here do not know how to drive in a roundabout, regardless of excessive signage. I almost get hit several times a week because people do not realize they need to yield to the traffic already in the roundabout. They just pull in right in front of you, and you have to slam on your brakes to stop from hitting them.

Those looks like Plane Trees (or Platans, not sure about the translation). Those trees have to be periodically replaced because when they get older they get dangerous, the branches tend to have bug infestations and are easily broken by strong winds. Older trees are less resistant to an endemic illness, Canker stain, and nowadays more resistant varieties of planes are used. Trees living in cities should be replaced at most after 60 years, and those trees look a bit younger but not too much, so replacement while renovating the road was a sensible choice. Younger trees are far more efficient in removal and trapping of CO2 from air, too.

In your opinion-- not in mine-- and having been a NYC Paramedic, these blocked off areas are a royal pain to get around, and maneuver emergency equipment around-- try carrying a cardiac patient down, having the street blocked by these idiotic bumpouts, , and trying to load into the ambualnce while traffic drives down the sidewalk to get through.- The ultimate in lazy, stupid design.

these areas are terrible, they stop people coming into the city because they cant park their car, these areas are for Starbucks customers and McDonalds etc, they are terrible for buses to get past, and as you see not many people use them, a city with no car parking dies, people will not leave the car at home,

This only works if the roundabout is big enough that you have clear sight lines for traffic coming in. There’s nothing worse than a roundabout with a big garden in the middle, stopping you from seeing other traffic until it’s into the side of your car!

A lot of european cities strive for this as the ideal city development. Unfortunately it is commonly assumed that its complete realisation is not yet attainable. But some cities (especially Barcelona has been a pioneer at this) try to do their best. It is generally met with concerns as usually a lot of parking spaces are removed. Only that once the transformation is complete, those parking spaces are not really needed any more. Most people in "accessible" cities do not have the need for a car, and more and more of them do not own one.

Amsterdam is a similarly pioneering city. They have removed so many car parking spaces, and have vastly improved the public transport system. They don't stop cars coming into the city, but cars are the slowest form of transport. It's quicker cycling, walking or taking public transport. When the car is the slowest option people only take the car when they absolutely need to.

This could be done by turning old, disused malls into mixed use developments-housing, stores, doctors, entertainment, etc, all in one building. Would be great as a senior center. Problem is, by the time malls die, they're too ill-maintained. And government won't spend money to house people, because that doesn't make profit.

in America, especially where i live, cars are a necessity, we have little public transport, and most places worth going are a 20 minute drive. also, it gets so hot in the summer, people only really go outside to get from one shaded or air-conditioned place to another. it must be wonderful to be able to walk places!

I just looked it up, it would take me about 40 minutes to bike to my nearest actual grocery store. There's a few gas station grocery stores closer, but I don't trust their cleanliness.

the statistics say: most of the time cars are used by just one person. the average is not even two people. however, the newer cars (especially SUVs and American cars) are now as big as an old VW Bulli, which can fit up to eight people. I think that's disproportionate.

For the past 70 years, the US has been building suburban neighborhoods that are designed on purpose so that the people who live there pretty much have to drive to go anywhere. I believe the basis for this was originally to keep people who didn't have cars, OUT.

I always thought this too until recently. Apparently the greenery actually protects the brickwork or rendering from elements such as rain, wind and general erosion. The greenery is also quite good at sound insulation. It can also keep buildings cooler in summer and warmer in winter too. The main downside is stopping it from going bezerk and growing into drainage, gutters, growing over windows or into any cracks that already exist....

I've done this on my home for years. No problem with brickwork at all. Just don't do this on houses with lime mortar. No insect problem. I did have 2 bird's nests in it and a hedgehog was living under one part. It definetely helped to keep my house cooler during heat waves. I have now moved and have started to clad the walls of my new home at well. Only drawback is that you have to trim it on a regular basis or it will cover your windows.

there's an old saying "don't let the green take over or it will fall over" in construction and building maintenance, the greenery keeps everything damp, it's impossible to repoint the walls or repaint if rendered and they destroy the window frames as well as attract flies, beetles, insects which ingress into the dwelling, Russian ivy which grows very quickly can pul gable ends down with the weight, bad idea, looks good but short-sighted,

Is it Ivy? That compromises cement between bricks and if left to spread, can do damage to the roof of the building, too. My parent's house (old, UK), had thick Ivy over the entire stretch of a boundary wall at one side of the driveway. When they decided to downsize and sell the house, they paid to have it removed. The wall collapsed halfway through the job.

Many of the canals in Germany have been there for a very long time. They are still sources of transportation of goods around the cities from the rivers. Cuts down on truck traffic & freight trains. Berlin is said to have more miles of canals than Venice. When I lived in Berlin, barges would go by & the only thing noticeable was the ship's pilot waving at you.

The "city planning" in most Newfoundland towns was that of necessity and ease of use. It's an amazing place where many towns didn't have roads connecting them until after the 1950s. Boats were their main form of transport, so bays and harbors are ringed with beautiful little fishing villages.

"Illegal" sounds dramatic but a some cities have zoning laws that prevent building integrated, walkable communities or at least make it untenable. I'm a little fuzzy on the mechanism but I believe some areas are zoned for single family dwellings only. If you can't build businesses, people can't just walk to the shops/restaurant/work. So people need to drive places. So motor vehicle Infrastructure is prioritized and walking and cycling are relegated to leisure activities which (if you're lucky) take place on designated trails which don't really go anywhere.

I'm not entirely sure but Frenche mythology has stories about Guivre, mythical creature similar to a dragon. In legend they were portrayed as serpentines who possessed venomous breath and prowled the countryside of Medieval France

I hope some of the paving around the trees is water-permeable so that rain can get to the tree roots...but I doubt it.

All of the paving there is water permeable If it's really wet the water will flow into the areas around the trees or onto the grass and soak into the ground. If there's an average amount of rain the rain will permeate between the individual pavers.

And despite all the signs put up for a 100 meters, a car is wrecked on the rising central post every week (on average), because the driver of said vehicle was not paying attention, and blindly followed the bus ahead of him/her. Not only in Amsterdam but all over the world. Plenty of YouTube videos for your amusement

we have a few of them in our town. Once my BF and i were in the shopping street, a big THUD sounded and a car was slammed into one of these things. It happened right in front of a outside area of a coffee house. The driver got out, looked at his car, the car started filling up with smoke. At the same moment we all of a sudden saw hands appear, tapping on the windscreen in the smoke, a guy who was having a drink outside the coffee house jumped up, rushed to the car, teared the door open and got this elderly lady out that was still in the car ... driver was just outside looking at the damage. "oh, mom can wait" ??? so bizarre. (The lady seemed a bit shaken but fine. Poor woman)
