Mechanics recommend that we bring our cars in for maintenance visits every six or 12 months. But blessed be the car owner who actually does that. In reality, owners wait an average of four months before addressing their "check engine" lights. Perhaps, then, it's no surprise that mechanics have to deal with all sorts of crazy situations.

Almost half of Americans (48%) say they wait so long because frequent visits to the mechanic are just not financially feasible for them.

If you've taken your car to the mechanic lately and thought that the bill was kind of high, you're not alone. Experts report that car repair costs have risen by 4.1% each year between 2013 and 2023. Still, they're having trouble explaining why exactly they're so expensive at the moment. One possible reason could be that the cost of collision insurance claims is rising.
Others speculate that cars are becoming more expensive to repair. The cars we're driving today are heavier (by 33% exactly, since 1985) and about twice as powerful than they were 40 years ago. There are also many other improvements: turbochargers attached to engines, all-wheel drive systems, and the cars are almost "a rolling network of computers," according to one repair shop owner.

Sounds like a Nissan Sentra my dad picked up cheap. The car was less than 1 year old. Nissan gave the girl a new car when it was less than 4 months old. It stopped running one day and they could never get it to run again. It had changed hands 6 times before my dad got it. Had 1500 miles on the odometer. It had spark, good fuel pressure, was in time and had good compression so he figured it had to be a computer or injection problem so he changed it over to a carb. Nope, still wouldn't hit a lick. I sold it a few years later for a parts car after he passed away.

I once had a car towed into my shop with pcm hanging out ftom under the dash on the in front of the passenger seat, the customer then told me that her "regulat mechanic, the guy that runs the tco bell drive-through told her..." Well funny thing he was not far off, he just didn't have the scanner needed to confirm... turned out he once was a shop owner that had his brother cheat him out of his business and he went into the restraunt business...

Those look like catalytic convertors. Catalytic Convertors have platinum, palladium, and rhodium in them as part of the chemical process that reduces your vehicle emissions. Those are somewhat rare and very expensive metals. Someone has been stealing catalytic convertors off of cars.

A well designed plastic part can be much better than a badly designed steel part. I read this is on a Dodge Ram and the part is an upper control arm, that handles only a limited load and is paired with a steel reinforcement plate. The material used is frankly impressive in terms of plastics: 50FWF-PA6 (nylon with long strand fiberglass making up half the weight of the part), the datasheet is a monster https://download.basf.com/p1/8a8081c57fd4b609017fd636478c3e5e/en/ULTRAMID%253Csup%253E%25C2%25AE%253Csup%253E_B3WG10. The expected service life exceeds the steel one, that historically had corrosion problems due to the complex shape of the sheet metal part and the weldments, and it performs on par with the far more expensive cast aluminum option.

When it comes to automotive design, there's not one company anywhere in the world where the designers have ever once consulted with mechanics on what to NEVER do when designing a car. Most designers clearly have never worked on a car. This is especially true for all those super expensive hand built cars that are nearly impossible to do even an oil change on without literally taking 1/2 the car apart.
