There’s this saying that essentially says there is no bad weather—only bad choices in clothing. Obviously, people who say that have never lived through extreme weather conditions. I doubt putting an extra jacket on will help with wading through the flood, Tim.

And even though extreme weather is normal in the sense that it happens because that’s just how nature works to bring balance to the cosmos, what is not normal, however, is what humanity is doing to tip the scale of the natural order of things, making extremes a more common occurrence. In other words, look at it as a wake-up call to do something about it before Waterworld happens.

To all of the people who don't live in the U.S. and lose their minds about the quality of U.S. homes when you see a picture of one with a 2x4 stuck through a wall. Here you see a solid tree with what looks to be a 2x6 cleanly inserted through it. In the right circumstances, a storm can put a 2x4 through a cinder block wall as well.

I used to use an air canon that was used to fling lengths of timber at walls to see how well they stood up to impact. (Like a chicken gun) I have a photo somewhere of a piece of timber spearing straight through a brick wall.

We had the most gorgeous big crab apple tree in our back pasture that the animals loved. When it bloomed, it was glorious. Then a bolt of lightning struck it right down the middle creating a bomb of light that was blinding. It was never the same.

We had that happen in our front yard about 20 years ago. When the tree quit burning, it fell over. Unfortunately, my husband miscalculated the distance his boat needed to be for it to not be in danger. One of the heavy upper branches crashed on his boat. Totalled.

No doubt there is ample awareness of the stuff that awaits us should we not consider climate change a real threat. The ever-increasing global temperature is just one of many factors resulting from human life on Earth.

In 140 years, the global temperature has increased by around 3 degrees with nearly each year in the last few decades being record-breaking in terms of oh god, why is it so hot outside?

I went to Majorca one year for a bit of winter sun. It snowed for the first time in over a decade. The locals were all heading up into the mountains to see it, and then coming back down with snowmen on the tops of their cars. It wasn't quite so novel for us!

But before (and hopefully, not at all) humanity burns alive if nothing effective is done, we will experience an ever-increasing number and multitude of extreme weather conditions. What’s that? In formal terms, weather is extreme if it’s on the extreme end of what’s been seen in weather patterns historically. This also includes unexpected, unusual, severe and unseasonal behaviors in the climate.

So, things like heat waves, cold waves, heavy rain and storms, tornadoes, droughts and floods (among many other things) fit the bill of extremes.

And while you might not necessarily be affected by some of these, it doesn’t mean you can’t be affected at all. A tornado, flood or a drought coming through an area where a lot of the world’s food comes from might mean a shortage for countries that rely on it. And you can’t ever know when supply is restored because that 7-minute tornado won’t take 7 minutes to fix. It’s just impossible.

Try living in Texas. We get a light dusting of snow, all the rednecks put their pickups in 4 wheel drive mode and drive like it is dry thinking "I have 4 wheel drive and can go anywhere at any time." But that light dusting of snow covers a thick layer of black ice. That's how we ended up with a 130 car/truck pileup in Fort Worth. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/70-car-pileup-icy-texas-interstate-leaves-least-five-dead-n1257454

Holy c**p! My half brother was in softball sized hail once when he was attending air force academy training in Colorado. They were outside playing ball. Said it made a bit of a whizzing sound like some mortars in movies. They ran for the buildings of course. Nobody hit - the hail was farther apart than small hail is. But it said the building windows swung outward and it hit a couple of open windows and just ripped the metal frame off the windows.

This is besides the economic costs that natural disasters can incur on infrastructure and natural landscapes, prompting first responders and emergency services to arrive at the scene—all of this costs a lot of money. And it gets way worse if there are human casualties. Economically speaking, though, hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, Harvey and Irma together were responsible for $427 billion of damage several years ago.

March 2019, Georgia. Monstrous F5 tore through Alabama and Georgia. The F5 spawned a F1 that danced through my backyard. Yes, I was stupid enough to stand in the front yard and watched as it tossed trees like toothpicks. Mother Nature has a dark sense of humor. The tornado swerved to miss my house then turned again to rip the roof off my Trump worshipping neighbors home.

All of this is caused by pollution. Pollutants, like greenhouse gas, being thrown out into the air has an effect on the climate, forcing it to warm up to a degree where it starts affecting everything else on earth. Soon, one animal population starts to dwindle, affecting other animal populations, which can affect plant life and that’s how you get a domino effect. And imagine that you’re at the end of the chain, being squashed by the last oversized domino. Or getting a tornado-propelled corn cob square in the noggin.

But to give you a clear idea of who’s the most responsible, in the first place we have the fossil fuels sector with a whopping 40.5 gigatons of CO2 emissions. Next up, it’s the agriculture industry with 9.3 gigatons of CO2 or 11%, followed by all things fashion with 10% of all global emissions. These three industries alone amount to more than half of the total emissions worldwide.

I ran canning lines for years and that is not the usual point of failure. Something was wrong with those seams. If you heat a can of soda until failure, the first thing to happen is the detent on the BOTTOM of the can deforms. Then the can splits up the side. The seam should be the strongest part of the can. Note the non-pepsi can on the left that looks just fine. This was a bad batch and a sign of a failing seamer on the canning line.

Slightly related tangent. There is a different in ingrediants between Diet Coke Soda and Coke Zero? How do I know? Put a Diet Coke can in the fridge for several weeks and you'll have a very cold Diet Coke when you finally retrieve it. Put a Coke Zero can in the fridge for the same amount of time and it has exploded, becomg solid ice all the way through with the can expanded all around it. It is weird.

A comment from a place of privilege. Not your fault any more than those who can't see their way out of living in mobile homes in tornado alley. Believe me, if people could afford real houses, they would. They aren't in a position of choosing a nice ranch with a basement or a trailer. They have no choice, other than maybe an apartment. But there are reasons (animals, criminal background, etc... ) that may prohibit apartment rental. So you choose a roof over your head.

It goes without saying that one man armies can amount to something if they work together. Even if it is in small ways: buy second hand, giving companies no incentive to produce more; buy loose tea because screw microplastics and added manufacturing materials; reduce meat intake to also reduce the industry’s necessity for various resources to produce it. Prompting for anything that is reusable is the first and foremost thing to do.

But if you’re already using reusable stuff—tea balls, rechargeable batteries, reusable bags, etc.—using less of something is the next step. Wash clothes in colder water, lower your monitor brightness (added bonus of not being blinded on the regular), set up automatic power-downs on your devices, and, one of the more surprising ones—download music instead of streaming it. All of this uses less resources to deliver and hence less electricity consumption. And hey, you save some bucks in the end!

It up rooted because its a hardwood and the street cut off its structural root system making a weak side that gave way. If you had big enough equipment, you could right this tree, stake it out with heavy duty wires, and actually run a good chance of saving it. Ive seen it done with Pecan Trees and Live Oaks for years. Thing is its easier just to cut it down.

It’s not all bad, though. Humanity has been moving towards eco-friendly alternatives for a while now—just not as fast as we’d hope for—but there is movement. Green architecture is pushing forward to meet new climate and energy generation requirements, recycling is expanding with plastics finding new (re)applications, electric vehicle propulsion is key in managing renewable energy. The list goes on and on. It’s not all sad, folks.

A number of years ago - flew out to colorado with my brother to visit relatives. HUGE lines at the car rental place because a couple of days prior a major hail storm had destroyed most of their fleet. I forget which 'big name' rental we were at but I heard it didn't matter because the others had been hit as well. We did get a vehicle after standing in line for an hour plus for something that was supposedly already reserved. I felt sorry for the staff. Most customers were pretty polite considering but people were frustrated, tired from travel, wanted to get off their feet. So standing in a zig zagging line 100 deep at a rental counter was not making people happy.

After the May 3, 1999 tornado that hit Oklahoma I have pictures of a boats in trees and on power poles in my grandmother's old neighborhood. We also had pieces from the piers, boat launches that were scattered throughout the neighborhood. The debris was from Lake Thunderbird 25 miles away from where my grandmother lived at the time. Her neighborhood was one of the ones that took a direct hit from an EF-5 tornado and 2 streets over from her house brick houses were completely ripped off of their concrete foundations and stripped bare. There were 48 fatalities and until May 20, 2013 that hit Moore a second time followed by the May 2013 El Reno tornado were the strongest and largest tornados ever recorded.

Another case of a mature tree being built over. The roots on the up side are damaged (yellow area). Tree had no support on that side and when it got so big and the wind hit it, timberrrr. You cant build in a trees dripline and not damage it.

Looking at the height of the water against the BMW, if it stays that depth and he drives very slowly, he should make it, however it looks deeper wher the van is. I driven my classic through fords that deep and it has less ground clearance than that! You need to go slow enough that the bow wave doesn't reach the air intake.

I live in a rain forest, our roads flood frequently. We either put cardboard in front of the radiator or drive in reverse through the questionable places. That said we know from hard earned experience which spots we can get through and avoid flowing water.

Never drive into standing water. Your vehicle can be carried away as the flooding worsens and/or you can drown inside the car when it fills. You can't open the doors against the water pressure

You can save this!!!!!!!! Call a local arborist if this ever happens. Some will even come out for free if it's an endangered native species to help you save it. Don't chop it up before calling someone to make sure. They have so many ways to replant them & doctor them to get them to keep growing! I've seen this happen a few times. One time it was a 50ft oak tree in my dad's backyard when I was like 12zzz It blew over just like this. They saved it!!! Don't give up!!!! Trees are so resilient. Also, ppl don't realize that tree roots don't usually grow super deep. They generally stay close to the surface like 1-3 ft below. Thats why they can blow over like this. So all is not lost. Don't give up.

Actually the tree was in the little strip of greenery between the sidewalk nd the road, so it’s actually city property that blew over onto private property. It’s up to the city to remove the tree and fix any damage it did to your property.

It has very little root on that side due to the road, which is why it has lifted. If it were in a bigger space, it might have survived.

I’ve worked in insurance for 15 years and something doesn’t track with the reason “insurance won’t pay”- I’ve never heard of the diameter mattering- how would they even prove that? I’m guessing there’s a higher hail deductible so it doesn’t result in a payout. That doesn’t mean insurance won’t pay, it means the claim was under the policy deductible.

Do not have a flat roof in a location that gets a good amount of snow every year. Snow won’t slide off a flat roof. It will accumulate until it’s too heavy for the roof to hold.

most of them are planted in clay rich soil so the roots dont go deep and the water tends to build up causing the rot to start. once it starts, it keep going.

Some cars that have a fob can roll down the windows if u hit the button a certain number of times quickly. It's an actual feature I found this out on a car I had when I hit the unlock button a few times because well I like pressing buttons more than I need to and all of a sudden the 2 front windows rolled down. I was dumbfounded until someone told me about the feature. Not sure if that's what happened here but maybe lol
