Did you know that the beautiful Scottish Fold felines have their distinctive folded ears due to natural dominant mutation in the Fd gene? Or that Manx cats, a breed originating from the Isle of Man, have a small stub instead of a tail due to a naturally occurring mutation?
Well, some of the genetic anomalies can result in very interesting differences in physical appearance. Just think of Instagram’s supawstars like Midas the cat taking the internet by storm with its four ears, or the deceased Grumpy Cat whose ‘grumpy appearance’ was due to underbite and feline dwarfism.
So this post is about the tricks of nature that resulted in unusual and occasionally even wholesome genetic surprises in the animal kingdom. After you’re done with this post, be sure to check out Bored Panda's previous feature about unique-looking pets!

Meet Narnia, A Rare Two Faced Cat
This blue-eyed kitten’s face was precisely divided into two halves: a gray half and a black half, and everyone was surprised when they first saw him.
I need these pets in my life but o last tis these fur babs out of thy loving grasp ( edit - I don’t know why I started writing like that to much Macbeth on the brain)

Load More Replies...There’s no definite answer to how common genetic abnormalities are in cats and other pets, the pet health and well-being expert Yulia Popyk from Petcube told Bored Panda, as it can vary greatly depending on the specific genetic abnormality and the population of cats being considered. “However, some estimates suggest that around 3-5% of all cats may be affected by a genetic abnormality. There are a variety of different factors that can contribute to the development of genetic abnormalities, including exposure to environmental toxins, dietary deficiencies, and mutations,” Yulia said.

That is super cool! I've always been fascinated by eye colors. I can't see people's eye colors. So I like to look at pictures like this.

The only time, this comment would be appropriate! Even worse, in England, it means "vagina."

It's not particularly when you have it (as I do). Kids are cruel.
Load More Replies...Petcube’s pet health expert said that some genetic abnormalities that have been reported in cats include congenital defects of the heart, kidneys, and eyes, among others. “While the exact cause of these abnormalities is not always clear, they are believed to be the result of inbreeding or other genetic factors.”
If you believe that your cat might be born with an abnormality that will critically influence their life, well-being, and health, it would be a good idea to consider subscribing to the emergency vet fund. “The service is basically an untraditional pet insurance product, which provides a direct payment to your vet clinic in a pet’s life-threatening emergency. Moreover, Emergency Fund covers any immediate medical issues which might occur to your cat due to genetic abnormalities,” Yulia said.

There are many mutations that are specific to particular breeds. “For example, the gene for short coat length is found only in certain breeds of dogs, such as poodles and Bichon Frises. Other examples include the genes for blue or green eyes, which are found in certain breeds of dogs, such as Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes, and Australian cattle dogs. The cocker spaniel breed is prone to a genetic mutation that causes a form of deafness.”
Yulia also said that “the blue coat color in Russian blue cats is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes the protein melanophilin. This mutation is found only in Russian blue cats and is not found in any other breeds.”

My Cat Has A Genetic Mutation That Makes Her Eyes Weird, Her Sight Is Perfect
Moreover, “The mutation that causes the Siamese cat’s characteristic blue eyes is only found in that breed. The mutation that causes the hairless trait in Chinese crested dogs is relatively common in that breed but is very rare in other breeds. Other examples include the Manx cat’s taillessness, the Scottish fold’s folded ears, and the sphynx’s hairlessness,” Yulia told us and added that mutation largely depends on the specific genetics of each individual breed.

Dexter And His Abnormally Long Tail
Love to see a picture of him walking - how does he carry all that?!?
This is unusual, because a cat’s tail is generally the same length as their body. I hope Dexter has adjusted, so his poor extra long tail doesn’t get trapped or shut in doors.
Awww so lovely!! Have to be very watchful of never getting stepped on!!💖💖💖💖💖
Meanwhile, some mutations are more common in certain breeds than others. “For example, the dachshund breed is known for its short legs, which is caused by a mutation in the genes that control limb development. The dachshund-specific mutation called intervertebral disc disease is a condition that affects the discs between the vertebrae. This can cause pain, paralysis, and even death in affected dogs. Other breeds have mutations that cause them to have unique coat colors or patterns, such as the brindle coat of the Staffordshire bull terrier,” Yulia explained.

Elli Was Born With Tuxedo Markings And Turned Almost Completely White In Three Years Due To Vitiligo
Until this post, I had no idea so many animals had vitiligo. What a lovely way of showing its effects, sweet kitty!
reminds me of my brother, he had solid brown hair and he's slowly turning pure white like mine, he's only 26 {were not even related, I'm adopted and albino, but i joke that he caught the albino from me lol}
I lost pigment in about half my hair when I was 15-17 years old. I'm 39 now, and the parts that still had color are starting to go grey. So I have white patches, black patches, grey patches, and salt & pepper patches. The white patches don't get dyed with hair dye, but the grey does, so I can go back to being black & white, but since the pandemic started I've just let it go. So, I rock a multi colored afro like a dalmatian.

My husband, daughter, and doberdane puppy all have supernumerary/shark teeth. Husband & daughter would only be removed if there's a cavity or growth problem, but the puppy they took out right away. I guess with animals there are way more risks than proper palete growth, and they tend to cause infections when the animals can't keep their mouths closed. So yeah, it's my understanding double teeth in animals need to be removed asap.
Load More Replies...Meet Avgust, The Extraterrestrial Albino Dog From Moscow, Russia
This is a double-merle dog and is not albino. It occurs when two merle-coloured dogs are bred together, resulting in this genetic combo. Double-merles can have severe health issues and are commonly born deaf, blind, or both, and are prone to more significant health issues. This dog has visual/eye abnormalities which is the result of the double-merle mutation and is not albino.
Thats exactly what I was thinking! I've seen both deaf and blindness because of the cell's genetic mutation on the gene colouring.

To be honest, I'm appalled by how many people think of these genetic defects as "cute". It promotes the breeding of cats with extra toes and extra unknown genetic defects. That's neither healthy nor ethical, but people don't give a f*ck BECAUSE KITTIES! It's embarrassing for us as a species.

Janus kittens that aren't stillborn - which I gather most are - rarely survive more than a few days, I've heard because usually there's a lot more wrong with them than is visible & they're very fragile. This little guy died the same day this photo was taken, despite good care.

Please Do Not Support Unethical Doberman Breeders Who Purposely Create Dogs Affected With Albinism. Too Many Health Issues Plague These Sensitive Canines As They Age
I don't understand why we have laws against animal cruelty, but they somehow exempt docking ears and tails to fit a "look".

Technically, with blue eyes and blond tinted fur, he's leucistic not albino
True! On another note some people forget, not all blondes have light colored eyes.
Load More Replies...I'm seriously wondering how many will read the title and think about it, and how many will just see the picture thinking "awww, an albinistic dog, that's so heckin' cool, I want one too. Interesting fact:blue doesn't exist as a pigment of feathers. What we perceive as blue is due to the structure of feathers and not, lile black or red, a pigmented feather. The structure makes it break the light in certain ways and we see it as blue
My Albino Siamese Kitty (No, He Is Not Blind). His Eyes Are Extremely Pale Blue To The Point Where You Can See His Red Veins
Siamese cats have a type of albinism. The basic structure of the eye involves the iris and the pupil. The iris has two layers. The cells in these layers affect eye color. Pigmented cells are present in most cats. Siamese cats and a couple of related breeds, however, do not have this pigment. This is because of the temperature-sensitive albinism gene. The blue eyes of a Siamese cat appear because both layers of the iris lack pigment. Blue eyes can still be present in cats that have pigment in one layer, but the eye of a true Siamese cat has no pigment. If you observe carefully, you’ll notice that the shade of blue changes in different environments.

I like to make you all aware of the fact that most sold Djungarian hamsters are crossbreed with Roborovski hamsters to obtain a brighter spectrum of fur colors or unusual fur patterns... So far so good... BUT those Djungarian hamsters (in their third gdneration) starting to get very prone to develop diabetes and become obese (a state which is not quite common for hamsters, as they naturally hamster their food.). Additionally those offspring are also very likely to develop tumors. ...having said all this: it's very hard to almost impossible to get a 'pure-blood' dsugarian nowadays in a pet shop. (I not holding you away from getting yourself such a little buggers, when you can provide him with a spacious cage, good food and all else what it needs... I just like you to be aware about what could happen to your little hamster when it's reaching 9M, 1Y etc)

not quite lucky because this calf is in a pen for it to later become veal
It’s a dairy farm, according to the title. Milk cows & beef cattle aren’t the same.

More like “Bug Eyed Super Model”. We had a cat with big old bug eyes like that. Lucy was the sweetest baby. We lost her to stomach cancer almost 10 years ago. RIP Sweet Lucy! You are so incredibly missed!

My Little Girl With Heterochromia Iridium. She Is Also Deaf In One Ear, A Common Genetic Mutation In White Cats With Blue Eyes
Yep. White cats are generally deaf in the ear on the side with the blue eye. Hearing is just fine in the other ear. Years ago. I had a white cat with one blue eye and one green eye, who was deaf on his blue-eyed side. He was also the runt of his litter, whose mother cat tried to abandon him, had an extra long tail, AND he was polydactyl (but only 6 toes on every paw)! Just made of spare parts all around.
Same thing happens with white dogs with blue eyes :( deafness is common if the ear has no pigment.

My Cat's Paw Is Pink Where Her Hairs Are White
Animal skin is what is patterned, the fur that grows is the same color as the skin underneath. Tiger in the pic was anesthetized and shaved for some sort of surgery tiger_skin...478165.jpg
That’s also true of her skin under all the white patches she has, anywhere on her body.
i have a cat with all black toebeans, except one on her back foot which is half pink! if you look closely, you can also see a tiny black speck on her fur. that isn't dirt, it's part of her pattern! drives me insane, lol 20220312_161113.jpg

Heterochromia Iridis Is When An Animal Has Different DNA/Colors For Each Eye. It Can Happen In Humans And Dogs Equally
Proof: this photo (animals) and my secondary school maths teacher (people)
They don't have "different dna in the eyes"!!!! It's a matter of pigment, nothing to do with dna
Well. Obviouly got to do with dna. But apart from chimeras or parasitic twins, one animal has the same dna throught its body. It depends on the expression of the genes how something turns out. Your kidney and your tongue are completely different and yet hsve the same dna

They’re all so unique!! Perhaps the humans could give them all a pet on the head on my behalf?
They're all gorgeous but unfortunately a lot of these mutations affect the animals negatively but breeders will purposely breed animals like this because we think they're cute. Just keep that in mind when thinking of adopting an animal!!
I just wanna say I have been browsing bored panda for abt 2 and a half years now and finally made an account just wanted to say hi and I hope you welcome me into the community!!!!!!!!!!! YAY
