Now, school ought to be a place of learning where eager minds would try to soak in every bit of knowledge and experience they can before they hit the real world.

Alas, schools are also a place where certain decisions beg more questions than they could possibly answer and, in some cases, it has reached unethical levels.

People of Reddit have been listing unethical practices that schools do, and nobody is really batting an eye about it. The discussion generated nearly 11,000 comments with over 24,000 upvotes.

Bored Panda has collected the most upvoted responses to this question and compiled a list which you can find below. Vote and comment on the answers that you think are the biggest problems, and why not also share some of your observations in the comment section below!

35 Unethical Practices That Are Surprisingly A Thing In Some Schools, As Pointed Out By Folks Online Harassing teenage girls for "dressing inappropriately" when a millimeter of their bra strap is showing (or some other bulls**t like that). Telling them it distracts the boys and invites unwanted attention. When they actually get harassed (or worse) the school does nothing.

It is not only sexist but it has very pedophiliac connotations. My catholic school did not allow middle school or high school girls to wear any kind of shorts (they needed to go until your ankles) (yes also doing sports at 40C with long trousers) or to even wear sandals. Once we asked our tutor why we couldnt do it (at least for gym) and the boys could and he answered "because their knees are not erotic". It repulses me two decades later to think that he found our knees erotic

If I had the power, I would pass a law saying that sexualizing girls like this would result in a minimum of 1 year in prison and be put on a sex offender's list for 10 years.

Or worse: the school tell the girls they are "overreacting", "boys will be boys", and "boys behave like that because they like you", and "maybe it's your fault for wearing short skirts". Disgusting.

Honestly, how can they not see that a boy being massively distracted by the strap of the thing that's holding someones tits up is a massive issue for the boy only and his to deal with.

"Dressing inappropriately" That's a load of bullsh*t. When I went to school, we had no dress code. During summer, girls would wear above the knee skirts and shorts, spaghetti tops, crop tops, etc., our bra straps were showing, and no one felt "distracted". Not even 15 yo boys. No one. So this dress code is just a tool for controlling women.

the culture of guilt about women's body is more about adults ideologies that the reality...the f**k up thing is, that that's how the boys learn and grow up to believe that is what me do, and then just adjust to it...you get a perfect circle passing down this mentality down the generations...

My head teacher in high school hated my from day one and among other things often criticized my clothing and kept saying that the school rules don't allow this or that so after a while I asked for the specific rules. He said I should not wear anything "not acceptable to public opinion" . I asked if that meant his opinion. He couldn't answer.

There are a lot of steps schools follow when scores are low. My favorite is, after 3 or so years the scores don't go up the state gets rid of the entire staff and replaces them with others. For some reason government thinks the problem is only about teachers and has nothing to do with all of the other societal difficulties.

An explanation of American schools: unlike in most countries, where schools get funded per number of students, USA does it differently. Block funds are supplied by the US federal government, but most of school funding comes from local government, through revenue gained from property tax. So if you live in a wealthy town with high home ownership, your already-privileged kid goes to a lovely school with lots of resources, plenty of books, and computers and sports and music and art, etc. If you live in an economically depressed area, where most people rent, then your school will be severely underfunded, students will not have enough of anything, and even the teachers are likely to be less educated or less motivated, because the school can't pay as well. So the poor kids are completely screwed over.

Legally I don't think that's allowed as the SAT is not a compulsory test. And tbh throwing money at a situation doesn't help - the lowest performing schools in NJ (Newark & Camden) have the highest spending per pupil with state assistance.

Raising funds with low results just makes school staff become lazy. Why caring about results if funds raised anyway? What a low-rated school needs is attention from authorities. Maybe raising funds could provide solutions, maybe the problem is somewhere else.

Two things: I don't understand; aren't SATs optional, and only for entering college or university? Why should they affect school funding? Also, shouldn't this be a picture of American money? Israeli high schools don't depend on SAT scores at all, and, in fact, there are two other tests one can take to qualify, instead.

One kid started hitting him and he finally defended himself and beat the crap out of the bully and they both got suspended.. he was literally so scared and defending his self. If someone hits you, you should be able to defend yourself without fear of being in trouble.

In my experience "bully free" means bullies are free to fo as they please. My kids attended a school where the admins were overpaid but they supposedly didn't have the budget to have a full time school nurse or soecial needs teachers. As a result there was one kid with severe behavior problems who ran rampant with no consequences. We got our kids out of that school ASAP

In my high school, the music building leaked and had mold, but the sports teams got new stuff every year, too. About 5% of kids were involved in sports, where 20% were involved in music. And that 20% held almost the entire honor roll. Our sports teams weren't even that good.

Sports programs build character and keep kids from dropping out. Our coach gave up a professional career to run our high school sports program for over two decades so far. Hundreds of lives were changed because of him. But funding sports at the expense of music, art, cooking, sewing, and all the other fun stuff that kids used to look forward to is insane. Who wants academics--and only academics--all day long? It's exhausting, so kids stop coming. Lack of the fun classes also deprives kids of needed life skills.

I experienced this. When I was going to both middle school and high school-- the sports teams got a totally free ride. Paid equipment, paid uniforms, paid trips. And meanwhile, the music classes like choir and band, we got NOTHING. A tiny, tiny budget for music (that we had to photocopy to get enough copies of), and that was it. We had to pay for everything else ourselves. The excuse was, 'but sports equipment is expensive!' And musical instruments aren't?! The other excuse was 'but the sports teams win awards!' The musical groups did as well. Hell, we did BETTER than the sports teams. We didn't begrudge the sports teams getting funding, but we did resent that that got most of the pie while we got crumbs.

At my HS graduation ceremony, the entire class, including me, discovered one of my friends had never missed a day of school since kindergarten. The principal then made a joke that maybe he'd break his dad's record at the factory in town. The kid had been t-boned by a drunk driver 2 years before and his parents still made him go to school. The comment from the principal set off a switch in his head. On Monday, he loaded up a U-Haul to move in with his fiance (set to get married in a week). He went to the new place and told her he had to escape now or it would never happen as he was scheduled to start working the next day at the factory. They loaded up her stuff into the U-Haul and just headed South. Eloped to Nashville, TN and after a couple of misfires, they opened a bait shop. Kids are grown up but he had a "gone fishing sign" and he'd shut down if they were sick or just needed a day off from school. He was voted "best life" at our 20th reunion.

When i was in 3rd grade this one kid had the nerve to start coughing in class because he was sick and ALL 20 OF US got in trouble because this one poor kid was sick. It was so messed up. Every time one person did something bad everyone else was punished too. I was a goody two shoes and never got in trouble but i was constantly missing recess and having to have silent lunch because one kid talked out of turn. I am still bitter about it years later.

This was how it was when I was at a military boarding school in the UK in the 70's - the thinking behind it was it was the collective responsibility of the (admittedly, small) classes to quash any insurrection / insubordination / misbehaviour, as, unless one owned up to the infraction, everyone was punished. This taught us all a few things, the main ones being 1) if you are caught, own up immediately 2). If you did it and you don't own up and all of us get punished, you will get a kicking from all of us, enough to hurt but not enough to mark your face or extremities (even then those injuries were written off as Rugby d***s) and 3rd and lastly, if you are going to break the rules and as it's not injuring anyone or too illegal (eg, going to see a girlfriend or going to a party etc ...) , let us all know and we will cover your a**e !! Lessons well learnt that have served me well over the intervening years .....

He said that meant us too. And when I asked him why bc we werent even there he said it was only to make it fair to the whole class. When I asked him how on earth it was fair to make the 2 of us write lines he didnt have an answer. I didnt write lines. Whats he gonna do? Guess where it was finally tracked down to? His tool belt. Wasn't sad when he retired the next year (although I didn't have to take metalwork again so I was already winning).

We have very little or no at all homework in Finland and we still manage to be in top countries when it comes to education, kids need to be allowed to be kids, and you know they actually might learn something when they dont need to do hours and hours of mandatory tasks. I dont do tests or read work related literature after working hours, why should small kids.

Note, I teach high school. Most of my students read on a third to fifth grade level. At the end of the day, I don't care what they read, as long as they read. Instead of figuring out the HW balance, we need to figure out the intervention balance. How do we help kids master basic skills instead pushing them through our industrial education system and spitting them out with information but no knowledge?

Of course, we didn't know what was causing it back then, so the teachers just told me I was being lazy e__e I also had to sit at my desk with my head on my arms, which the teachers assumed meant that I wasn't paying attention. Fair enough they get a couple of sheets of it and were meant to pick off things to do from it and hand it in by the end of half term but it's a flat no in this house. Both kids are massively ahead. Outside school is their time to be children. They learn loads outside school, but they learn along things they're interested in and want to learn about. I remember the problem of buying school books when we were poor. But actually some college books are only purchased by a few dozen people on that particular course, so would not be produced without those purchases. So SOME people purchasing the book is important. However you acquire the book should not be anything to do with the college though.

If school would be free for the attendees and supported from government budgets, the writing of books could be centralized and budgeted without forcing children to choose between books and meals. Saying that some people must purchase the book doesn't solve the problem.

Or to purchase books written by your professor(s) in order to pass the exam. You had to show the brand new book at the exam and the professor signed it. (This way we couldn't use the same book for several students). I didn't have money, so I failed the exam. Happened to me and to many others. Is this really a thing? I'm doing currently my master's level and haven't had to buy any books. All assignments can be done without using textbooks. Lecturers teach you material, give you access to relevant information, and rest is own research. Library personnel is there to help you access material not available in Library. I thought it was normal that colleges don't seek to fail you, but always pass you. My lecturers go out of their way to help students who fall back. They email, seek contact with failing students directly, help them access support groups (maths lab, engineering labs), mental health accessibility. Surely this is the norm and not "buy textbook to get access to publishers website for an assignment". You are set up to fail and go in debt.... This is why we are sort of qualified people in many industries if colleges just keep you in them until you can afford to BUY access to assignments. What the hell do you pay the college fees for?

For my education degree, we had a few books that we had to read multiple chapters for so we either bought or photocopied from the library or another student. Most courses had more readings from journal articles which we accessed from online. At the end of the unit we could then sell our books to someone else if we wanted as the editions didn't really change much.

I always had copies of the book (various editions) around for students to borrow. I also showed student that were finding it hard to buy the book how to find older copies on Ebay or Craigslist. And then the professors/lecturers tell you on the first day that they won't be using the text. We worked out not to buy anything until the class had started and the lecturer had said what texts were necessary. Even myself, when I was young and at uni and had no family support, I was told I had to buy a book for 50 pounds. That was astronomical to me. But it was an illustrated dictionary (Larousse) for the study of French. I figured that language couldn't have changed THAT much, and it was for my reference, so I went to the second hand bookstore in town and got an older copy for 5 pounds. In the USA, college textbooks are nothing but a racket.

35 Unethical Practices That Are Surprisingly A Thing In Some Schools, As Pointed Out By Folks Online I was a decently misbehaved third grader. Told my teacher I had a stomach ache and I needed to go to the nurse. I asked a number of times. She thought I was just trying to get out of individual reading time. My appendix burst on the bus ride home. I was never one to ask to go to the nurse. Just a hyperactive kid my teacher apparently had enough of. Denying medical attention to an 8 year old seems unethical. This is not a "boy who cried wolf" story for all those saying "I told ya so".

I remember one time in digital technology class I developed a splitting pain below my stomach. I think it was trapped gas in my bowels or something. Anyway, I asked my teacher if I could go to the nurse, but she told me no because class was "almost over" and that I have to wait until it was finished before I could go. Except that class was over in an hour, so I had to stay seated in my chair, in agony, for an hour. Did I mention that digital technology was my last class that day? So school was over by the time class ended and I couldn't stay behind because then I'd be late and I can't be late because my mum had to pick up my brothers from their schools as well so I never got to the nurse. And then there was that other time where I nearly fainted in the mandatory religion class and I did have to go to the nurse and while my friend was leaving my schoolbag in the nurse's office, she told me that the substitute teacher was pissed at me for missing class.

I got detention for being late to class, when I had taken my friend to the loo. She felt sick and started throwing up, so I and another friend stayed with her and then took her to the nurse. Teacher went mental at us for being late, said helping a friend was not an excuse, and when I said would you rather us have left her on her own not feeling well, it was a genuine question in the moment because I was shocked by his attitude, he said yes! And I then got another detention for my bad attitude…

On the first or second week of first grade (at a private catholic school, fyi) I had a super high fever in class, I couldn't keep my eyes open or my head up, so I rested my head on the table and closed my eyes. A counselor went to my classroom, was talking to the teacher about the students, the teacher introduced my classmates by name, when she got to me she said "there's Red, who's sleeping." I remember angrily saying "I'm not sleeping!" None of them bother to check on me. None of them gave a tiny rat's ass. I threw up later, just as we were about to leave the classroom. Turns out I had a nasty stomach bug, couldn't go to class for a week.

I can understand a teacher being skeptical about a student who asks to go to the toilet all the time, but usually we just make sure they don't go at the same time as a friend. But denying medical attention is so wrong, especially since usually kids hate asking to see the nurse as they make them sit around doing nothing until they feel better if it's a non-specific 'unwell'.

I asked to go to the bathroom several times during a class because I felt really nauseous and like I was going to puke. But I kept not puking. Finally the teacher screamed at me in front of everyone for faking it. Instead of realizing I had an upset stomach and should probably see the nurse. So I stopped asking to go to the bathroom and wound up puking all over her classroom. She then sent me to the office. But not before calling them (in front of me) to tell them I was bad child who forced myself to throw up to get back at her. Still refused to see or believe I was sick.

Another sad truth is that is also often easier to get a bullied student's parent to comply with ?(any) action that the bully's. The bully's parents are quite often difficult or aggressive themselves. In a roundabout way, lots of the bully's behaviour comes from their relationship with the parents (in a breathtaking variety of ways). Not saying it's right at all, but its another factor to consider.

Yeah I was bullied in highschool. The school did nothing even though I was being told to kill myself because apparently I was a whore (a Virgin who just moved there and got a lot of unwanted attention from boys) and they decided it best for me to finish freshman year homeschooled.

My mom is a retired teacher and always told me she never asked anyone to leave because they're her responsibility during her classes, so whatever happened it would be on her. So maybe it's better to keep a close eye on the troublemakers. 🤷‍♀️

My mom used to tell me I couldn’t take communion if I was in my period. Once I was old enough to make up my own mind, I threw that out the window. I was taught Jesus died for everyone. There was no disclaimer in the bible excluding women on their period from this.

The schools are probably religious schools, or perhaps because it is a public school so the government decides that everyone has to pray as there is a national religion.

Malaysian here. This actually caused quite an uproar when parents/people found out about it. If I remember correctly, this was mostly in boarding schools, where they usually have communal prayer sessions (regular day schools don't have them). Not sure if period checks are still a thing after the backlash. Most people feel that whether one prays or not, or lied to get out of prayer sessions, that is really between the individual and god, and not something to be "policed" with vile period checks or whatever. Edited to add: from what I know, the period check wasn't a national policy/directive, it was some overzealous teachers/ wardens, possibly condoned by the schools themselves.

It would be against the teacher's duty of care as well, for anyone but especially for someone with a known medical condition. I had a student with a kidney condition whose mum said multiple times at the start of the year that she had to be allowed to drink as much water as she needed and go to toilet whenever she asked. I said of course, but it sounded like she had previous teachers who wouldn't which baffled me. If I had refused and something happened I could have been charged and be de-registered.

There's this weird idea that introverted people are 'broken' and need to be 'fixed'-- 'taught how to come out of their shell'. There's nothing wrong with us! Society needs introverts in order to function. Case in point; staying at home during a stay at home order and not going crazy because of it. Taking on jobs that require the person to work alone, etc.

With the right finding and resources (people), the child should be supported as much as is needed. Alas, the budgets alloted to schools are abysmal compared to our military funding.

The No child left behind law has hurt the education system. In Florida, the teachers are required to "teach for the test." Standardized tests do not, in any way, shape, or form tell the truth about how intelligent the students are! I barely made it through H.S. algebra, but tested into calculus at the university level. It drives me, and other educators, crazy!

I completely agree about standardised tests! I taught primary school (grade 3 & 4) and grade 3, 5, 7, & 9 have a nation-wide test. We had to spend a couple months coving things that we wouldn't otherwise be focusing on in that way. It did not assess what they learned, just how they cope with test situations. There are much better ways of finding out whether the students are understanding than summative assessment like that.

I went to a rural high school where 80% of the kids missed 4 of the 9 months of the school year during planting and harvest season. Most of the remaining 20% were kids of dad's working in the plastic container factory. They were still passed on grade to grade just because of their age. The state had a requirement that you had to take Civics senior year. It was the only required class. The teacher taught the class by going around the room and having everyone read one paragraph from the textbook. All tests were oral quizzes where we all passed or we all failed. If we failed, we re-did the chapter. Drove me crazy as a kid but 10 years later I realized the truth. He knew most of them were functionally illiterate and couldn't read the whole book on their own. By having people take turns reading paragraphs, he made sure they knew their rights and responsibilities as a citizen. His tests were the best civics test too - we either all succeed as a society or we all fail as a society.

In Australia you can't fail kids because "it's bad for their self esteem" so you get lots of 15 and 16 year olds that can't read or add. I mean why bother to try if you know you can't fail. The whole thing is just sad.

Worse, schools not being allowed to hold them back. They send kids who failed to the next grade (k-12). They can literally fail every single class every year and come graduation time they are released but not certificate. There are systems in place for intervention, credit remediation, alternative education formats, but they can refuse and stay at their home school.

I think the real issue here is not properly supporting students to learn. Holding back students has it's own problems like social isolation (no longer in the same grade and possibly school as all their friends) and humiliation (being singled out and bullied as "stupid"). A better solution would be to actually target the areas where the student needs help and to help them. Sadly, the government is trying to push too many standards for education and teachers are not being supported properly. Children get left behind because statistics say they don't matter and the teacher needs to move on to get through the standards for the rest of the class.

Weekly I'd be found in breach of an obscure rules that required public punishment/s. Some times it would be 6 strokes of the cane. A cane was solid bamboo 4 feet long and as thick as a thumb. I'd have to put my hand out palm up and receive 3 strokes across middle joints of my fingers. They would bruise and swell so I couldn't hold a pencil to write. His next favorite punishment was to make me stand against a Besser block wall in the full sun, no hat for a few hours. It was in full sight of the entire school. It became suicide to be my friend.

I hate seeing children suffer when they choose to no longer be in extracurricular activities by teachers who treat them badly or deliberately ignore them. You'd think adults wouldn't be so petty. I also hate Physical Education teachers who fraternize with their sports students rather than teach the class assigned. They ignore teaching the rest of the class.

Private language teaching establishment in China had what appeared to be ornate metal shutters on upstairs windows but they couldn't be opened. It was just one piece welded to a frame that was then bolted to the brick wall. The excuse was they had to be like that because a mentally disabled young child had climbed out on one occasion. There was only one entrance/exit door to the building and the work rooms were at the top of a steep, narrow, unlit set of stairs. There were too many other safety violations to list here.

They chained it because too many student used it to ditch class or go out to eat outside of the school ground. Fire department came for the fire drill and inspection and fined the school. Chains removed the week after.

I could never understand in the States that our high school started at 7:30, the middle school at 8:30 and the elementary school at 9:00. It made no sense. The small children are more likely to be awake. Parents can drop them off before they go to work, meaning they don't need so much childcare. Older kids who can get themselves to school, and who need later sleep and later waking times, should go later. Makes no sense at all.

The science behind adolescent (and other young learner) sleep schedule is fascinating and the research is in favour of a totally different approach. Thing is, the research is in favour of a totally different approach in most aspects of public education - what we teach, how its taught, the structure of schools... Ultimately, in many countries, no one really cares. It's a sad fact but people care more about a far-off war, the next bond movie or sports than education. Have a flick through some newspapers/politcal debates etc. to verfiy this. What people want is (a) daycare - which is a totally reasonable thing to want, and should be publicly provides, but is seperate from education (b) to spend as little as possible (c) to draw in bright students from other countries at university level - where another state has already paid for their education - and get them to stay and be doctors etc. Add your own d,e,f...

I used to be a nanny. The school did not let me put weather appropriate clothing on the boy in my care because they had a schedule for which version of the uniform is allowed when. This boy was very sickly and would get a cold every five minutes. But he had to go to school wearing shorts and a blazer (coat not allowed) in October during a bad cold snap. Long trousers are only allowed from November. Also one time we ran out of clean uniform socks because of a miscommunication with the mom so I put regular socks on him and told the teacher what happened. She said I had to take him home and put the "proper" socks on him. I repeated that they are all dirty. "He cannot attend without." So he had to miss first class AND wear dirty socks. I'm sure the world would've ended if a 7 year old wore the wrong but clean socks for one lousy day.

The stupid thing about smooth straight thin hair being the standard for normal and "presentable" or neat is it's not even normal for all white people either. I have thick frizzy curls (still nothing compared to an afro) and no matter what I did I'd have flyaways and frizz and whatever else. I'd spend and hour trying make it look neat only to be told "why don't you ever brush your hair?" (which I learned as I got older actually made it look worse) or to take some more pride in my appearance. I remember I had work experience when I was 15 and I dressed as nicely as I could, even borrowing a blouse from my grandma since I didn't have much money or clothing and I dont tend to dress in feminine clothes, and thought I looked really professional only for my teachers to receive feedback afterwards that I hadn't put effort into my appearance. It's been over 10 years and that still sits with me. I was devastated that no matter how much effort I put, my natural appearance was just not acceptable.

Yep, I have a real issue with schools dictating what my kid can do with their hair. I had a mohawk in high school and so did my son. His teachers only got annoyed with it when he did not bother to make it stand up and let it flop. Also, I think the hair policing gets used too often against people of color. Schools are overstepping their boundaries when they decide what hairstyle is appropriate. That's a parents job.

I remember an unusual hot spring in the North Eastern United States. I was going to a private schools the time that did not have AC. We had to were Oxford blouses, wool knee high socks, wool skirts, and sweater vests. We as student kept asking the teacher if we could take off our sweater vest because it was hot. The teacher refused as it was a violation of dress code. Later in the day several of the girls in my class fainted due to the heat. The principal went and bought fans for all the classes room and we we were allowed to take of the sweater vest on warmer weather.

The only classes that can have just one answer (or two, or three or whatever, but a certain sure number of answers) are just scientific classes. The gravity law is that one, you can't have an opinion on that, for example. All the other classes should try to develop the critical thoughts of students, they should be able to disagree, and if the critic is well done and well thought through, they should be praised for that. At the same times I can't understand why there are teachers that can say that scientific facts aren't true and go away with this kind of b******t

The most insane part to me (because I finally had teachers notice how suicidal I was and call in mental health experts to evaluate me) is that as soon as my mom refused to do anything about it, the school had to drop it. I think the school also tried to get me evaluated for autism as a child, but if the parent refuses, the school does not have to offer any special education or support for students.

This is why every school should have a system to make sure that Student's mental health is taken care of, my school has multiple counselors as well as School Psychologists, and does a check-up to see if any student is feeling Suicidal, or Depressed right after showing a presentation on Suicide/Depression and what to do, and then if you respond in a way that makes them concerned (for example I put that I have considered Suicide) they take action and do something about it, even to the point of sending you to a Mental Health Facility and excusing you from school so you can get help

After multiple suicide attempts, it was decided I needed intensive inpatient treatment at a long term residential facility. The school I was going to at the time was beyond incredible about it. The guidance counselor and the principal came to monthly ‘community meetings’ at the hospital to support me the entire time I was there. When I was finally discharged, it was decided that I needed some structure still so I went to a boarding school but it went way downhill my second year so I went back to my pre-hospitalization school. They had some new staff but everyone who was there when I left was still there. I loved my English teacher who was new to me. Until my mental health started going downhill again. I missed a lot of days. One day, she pulled me out of class to discuss stuff I had missed. She looked me dead in the eye and said, “you need to suck it up. Mental illness isn’t real. You’re just trying to get out of work.” I dropped out with only 3mos of my senior year left

Half a year later I was being abused at home and couldn't turn to anyone because he had all the teachers against me over one incident outside of school. I married a man that also abused me and I in part blame him for my thinking I was worth the beatings.

I'm happy with my college experience, just as a person, but the costs are crazy and it feels like a copout when the Manager's friend's kid who is a high school dropout has a better chance of getting the same position. A bit of an extreme example, I mean I get it, the kid probably needs help getting his for in the door for something entry level, but then we have a similar example for, like you said, high paying executive jobs.

I remember a big event at my daughter's high school where these guys told us that half of all the students wouldn't get into college, and half of those would drop out in year one, and so they continued. They were trying to say that every grade for the next four years was really important. I did the mental math as they went along. So when it came to question time, I asked "You have just told us only 20% of our kids will get a college degree. But you want the other 80% to waste time and money trying?" Loooooong silence. They talked around it, but they had no comeback. There was none. Had a lot of parents (we all knew each other-- small school) come and thank me for saying what they were thinking. US college is completely overrated.

It doesn't always pay off-no. But I think education still has a great value. IF you can go to uni I think it's a great investment. Maybe not in income but for your personal development in life. I did choose the "wrong" profession (social worker) for it to be worth it regarding income - many people who don't have any type of higher education earns more than I will ever do - but I will still never regret my education. But if you can, do something else before you go straight to university. I did military service between "high school" (not exactly the same system here) and university. That was a really interesting "break" and I learned a lot from that. But you could also work for a while (or if you have the privilege- travel). You don't have to do a straight path.

This may be one of the biggest problems. I was convinced that I had to go to college right out of high school and get a good degree, and that there was no other way. I was more worried about the expectations of others than my clearly crippling mental health, and I ended up flunking out of a private institution and in debt. So that's fun. I'm in community college, but I'm really not trying to rush it. I wanna make sure that I'm doing something I wanna spend the rest of my life doing while having fun

Same here. I went straight to a 4-year college straight out of high school with only a vague idea of what to major in based on my test scores, burned out and left after 4 years (with at least 2 years left to graduate due to how class availability worked) and got a low-paying job for 10 years before I was finally stable enough in my life to go back to community college and got a degree in something I actually like. I'd definitely recommend getting a transfer-friendly AA degree and some real life experience before jumping into the huge time and money commitment that is university.

Yeah, it's like that in the US. College is a business. You can go to a 2 year tech college and get the certs you need for some jobs, but they don't advertise or educate kids on it. It's not as profitable. Instead it's preached that if you want to survive (not thrive, survive) you have to go to college. Or join the military.

On a completely different note, when I went to university in the UK in the 80s, only 5% of the population went to uni. It was specifically for people following a very academic path. Then there were polytechnics that were for more practical training in more white collar careers. Then there were tech schools for people training for actual jobs they wanted to do, more blue collar, and so on. Now everything has been combined into one, and it's nuts.

Not even kidding. Had a problem with a punishment for my daughter when she stood up against a teacher who was causing all kinds of problems for other students. This teacher never had all the kids work graded on time and would put zeros in for the grades until she got to updating it. Lots of kids missed out on school activities, we're talking football games and band competitions, stuff like that. All because records showed they were failing her class due to missed assignments. Which they weren't. At all. My daughter asked if she even had a teaching certificate. Got kicked out of a leadership program for it. The second we walked into the principal's office, he said "Yeah I've been getting a lot of students and parents complaining about this teacher". Teacher never got reprimanded but the kids kept having to pay for her mistakes.

My 5th grade teacher was the sort that had her favorites and had those she didn't like and if you were one she didn't like, you would know it. And that year, it was me. I still have no idea what I did to her to get on her bad side. But she was beyond cruel to me. Always belittling me. Looking for ways to humiliate me. We had to meet with the principal so I could transfer to a different class halfway through the year. But she kept her job and didn't get reprimanded for it.

Pay teachers more, give them proper respect, and you'll attract better people to the field, and then you won't have to hold on to the losers. Putting more pressure on teachers is not the answer. These people are so stressed they can hardly see straight.

Strongly disagree. My school counselor helped me work up the nerve to come out to my mother, and even spoke with her afterward, to help us talk about it more easily. Also, this was not just two or three years ago, for anyone who is thinking "sure, it's that way NOW". No, this was almost 30 years ago. The right person in the role of school counselor can do amazing things!

Our teachers regularly told us we would be flipping burgers for a living. But wait, it gets worse! I went to work for that school later and the school board had hired a jackass superintendent who was hell bent on turning a profit (not sure how or why this was legal for a public school, or even slightly thought to be necessary). I was working as a para educator (something that requires an associate degree) and making $12 an hour. The McDonald's in our town was paying $15 an hour. And the superintendent was trying desperately to somehow not raise wages for the support staff, even though California minimum wage had gone up and we were being paid under that.

I got pregnant my senior year due to 'unwanted attention'. I had religious parents who promptly accelerated emancipation. My HS principal, nicknamed Skunk Lady for her hairstyle, was brand new that year and tried to force me to go to 'pregnancy school'. It was a program ran by the local diocese that treated all pregnant girl like they had the intelligence of a 3 year old, because "Academics put unnatural stress on the baby." I was on the honor roll, future educators of America, chess club, theater, all AP classes... I refused to trade my HS diploma for the program. SL didn't like that at all. In her eyes I was messing up her school by swanning around obviously pregnant. My son was born the first day of Spring Break. I went back to class for a break, some normalcy, and I was taking electives I hadn't taken yet for fun. I was back for 4 days when SL 'discovered' I'd completed all my requirements for graduation and kicked me out. She also refused to give me my diploma until the ceremony.

The look on her face when I told her I was taking college classes was priceless. When she kicked me out of school she told me that I'd never go any further than flipping burgers at McDonald's. I kept tabs on where she was working over the years, and every time I got a degree, was in an article or documentary, or got an award or license I sent her a copy with pertinent info blacked out and a sticky note that said 'Flipping burgers at McDonald's? F**k you.' There are a few other therapists, counselors, and teachers on that list. Yes, I am absolutely that petty. ~~ There are also 3 teachers that get the same letter with a note that says 'Thank you for believing in me when I couldn't believe in myself.'

A teacher did that to me when I stood up to him. He was a sub and our class was doing great with our regular teacher (above 80% average) and came that âsshat and the average dip to 40%. He started insulting the whole class, saying elementary schools kids were better than us and I just told him to shut the fück up and that instead of telling us anecdotes about his life abroad or sports achievement, he should teach! And pointed out we were doing fine before him. He called me a racist, he thought I told him to shut up because of where he came from (not true at all) and started saying that to EVERY other groups that came into class. Short story: he tried to have me kicked out, but lost his job instead.

1- I had 5 math teachers in my 6th grade year. They didn't like the principal and would leave. During this time they hired a math teacher who told us that she was "just there for the money", belated us for not know what she was teaching, complain about her privately life, and she told me that I was "the Stupidest math student she ever taught". It's not that I wasn't a good student (A's & B's) I just didn't have the fundamentals down at all. 2- Highschool - I go into the guidance counselor for advise on colleges. What like to do, extra circulars, clubs ect. I told him I liked art, was in drama club, was a 4-H member. I really wanted to go to college for drama or film related things. He looked up my transcript. Looked at me and said, " I can't help you. Your not an athlete." The guardian counselor was coach of the tennis and gold team. So there went my dreams of being in a theatre troop and film school.

How about not allowing students to use the bathroom during class? Because "you should have done that during the passing period." Even though we get 3-5 minutes to get to the next class, all of my classes were dead opposites of campus, and there was only one open bathroom, also in a crappy part of campus, and also full of girls trying to use the bathroom. And then getting in trouble for being late for class because you tried to use the bathroom.

Because students vandalize bathrooms and there isn't money to continually fix them. Or students are doing illegal activities or bullying in bathrooms when there are no adults around. Also no money to pay someone to sit in all the bathrooms all day to make sure students aren't shitty to each other or property.

There's got to be more to this story. Kids have o'ded in bathrooms, hidden from classes, destruction, etc etc. If the school can't afford to put monitors in the hall they may opt to keep only one open, one they can keep an eye on.

My school made this stupid rule where if ur ever seen carrying a phone in school they'd confiscate it for 3 months. THREE FÚCKING MONTHS. I never use my phone during classes but I used it during break time because I wanted to show my friends some pics on my phone. A random teacher saw me and came up to me to take my phone. Most teachers in my school thought that rule was ridiculous and so they just warned the kids if they saw them with a phone. But that bitch teacher just confiscated it and gave it to the admin office. At the end of the day I begged her to give me my phone but she said rules are rules and kept it with her. 2 weeks later the country went under lockdown and my phone was still there. I freaked out because I didn't know how long the lockdown will last and everyone knows how important a phone is, even to a HS student. I used my mom's phone to call and annoy that teacher to give me back my phone but she kept ignoring me. Eventually 2 months later she finally gave it back.

I am a collector of antique textbooks, specifically those from the 1870s through the late 1940s. There has been no significant developments in high-school or basic university level mathematics since then. Math books being 'updated' every few years is merely a scam to sell more textbooks. Antique textbooks also tend to be VERY information-dense. You weren't paying for wide margins, silly photography, or other weirdness.

the only time ive seen this be done ethically is with a professor who wrote his own materials that a) in part acted as a replacement for lecture notes and homework, and b) to lower the price as much as possible.

Yes, for the expensive mark up ones. I was fortunate to have one undergrad professor who wrote his own and had it printed on campus, then sold it for a reduced rate. It wasn't fancy but was efficient and effective!

How so? That could actually be a huge benefit. Many professors are more apt to be proficient in their knowledge and teach truths instead of the lies and garbage many textbooks are filled with (at least in the U.S). The fact is, in most subjects, knowledge evolves and information becomes outdated thus the need for amendments...but I'd rather buy a professor written book than a Texas school board approved book

My advisor during grad school used his textbook for his undergrad surveys because it was the most popular textbook for the subject (it was good - dude's still one of the smartest people I've ever met). At the beginning of class he always told people what he made off of each sale (it was only a few bucks) and if they wanted, he'd happily give that back to them. Always a handful that took him up on it. :D

A professor wrote a book, self published it and made it the primary source of material for his class, forcing everybody to purchase it from him. I still have my signed copy because he wrote some nice stuff to me.

Dress code is bullshit. Self expression should be a thing as an adolescent and forcing you to look the exact same half your life, leave sleep out, 6-8 hours of commute and school... That's just abuse. They're not in the military or at a factory, and at those places at least they provide the clothes, with school you pay for them (afaik, never had uniform at school thankfully)

On the other hand, some kids don't care about expressing themselves through clothing, and they can get bullied because they don't flaunt a particular style. The problem has many variables. Best thing might be to teach kids to be more compassionate and see beyond appearances. In other words, get to the root of the problem.

Dress code: No overtly hateful words or symbols. Nothing that's a clear safety hazard, like flip flops. Dress code for classes like gym or shop can be defined as demanded by safety and function. That's it. The end. Stop measuring hemlines and hair. Stop looking for bra straps. Stop defining gang colors. Stop wasting time on ridiculous rules. Just let the kids wear what they're comfortable with.

What is insane to me, is our school made us buy our phys Ed clothes from the school itself. We went allowed to wear sweats or basketball shorts or anything. We had to spend $20-40 to buy clothes. Nevermind the fact that a lot of kids in our school district weren't eating regularly because their families were that poor. And then if we didn't have a p.e. uniform, we were considered defiant and sent to detention.

So what happens is that schools decide to do a fundraiser. They contact some school fundraiser company to guide the school to the proper type of fundraising. Then a slick sales person comes and does the old razzle-dazzle with the school, telling them what they can buy with all their fundraising money (after the a % goes to the sales company), how X amount of students will bring X amount of dollars giving examples such as new computers, new text books, more tech equipment, anything the sales person thinks the schools wants/needs. Students given horrible, cheap, unnecessary junk to hawk on any poor person who wants to help the school. School doesn't make much money so later in the year they have another BS fundraiser.

Well, some symptoms might be similar if you have depression, or are neurodivergent. Also some other circumstances can alter how your brain worked. Plus for some people the adhd changes or with coping mechanisms isn’t noticable anymore. Though you aren’t diagnosed by a teacher but by a doctor I hope?

This. I have too kids on the autism spectrum. Both do show some signs of adhd, but at 8 and 10, we still aren't sure. Daughter especially seems like it is mostly her anxiety. Then there's me. I was not diagnosed as an adult, but I definitely have always had adhd. I just had good coping mechanisms, intelligence and a fear of misbehavior that hid it.

ADHD is at the same time the world's most overdiagnosed and underdiagnosed disorder in the world, i.e. kids who are perfectly normal but simply struggle with sitting still on hours on end (because they're kids) and annoy the teacher, get pumped up full of meds that alter their brain, wreck their liver, heart and kidneys, and the true ADHD sufferers go undiagnosed for decades, struggling in life, misdiagnosed with disorders they don't have and also pumped full of toxic meds they don't need.

In 5th grade I had to stay home for a week due to a severe throat infection. I had a doctor's note attesting that and had to miss a math test. Mind you, math doesn't come easy to me, so I need to concentrate a lot more. During that week my grandma had a stroke and passed away. Come Monday, my mom went to the school with me and talked to the teacher, she had always been super friendly with my mom and me, we knew each other for about two years by that time. My mom asked explained everything to her and asked her to allow me to take the test at the library or maybe the councilor's office and because of everything that happened. She also asked the teacher to let me know the new day. She agreed and we went our way. On Tuesday, during English class, the math teacher shows up, asks the English teacher to excuse me, sits me on the corner of the room, presents me with the test and leaves. What if I had a question? What if I couldn't concentrate with everyone speaking around me?

Don't say that too loud, it'll give the US colleges ideas. (If some don't do this already; have their own tow truck.) The local college in my area has like 3/4 different campuses. The parking fees, for students and staff, start just above $200, and go as high as almost $800, per semester. The diff prices are for whether or not lot is for a dorm, or how far away the lot is from the buildings. And many of the passes are for certain lots only, and not valid at other lots. We have people that park in a limited space in our neighborhood or little nearby plaza, then they walk, bike, or skate(board) across the main road to get to classes.

Hmm, that doesn't generally happen, does it? My old school was poor but it still managed some variety in its lunch menu.

Ahhh but if you try to mandate healthier lunches then certain sectors of parents will start screaming "dont tell me how to raise my child."

I remember when my daughter very first started school, and I was so happy because I read how the child would be offered this fresh veg and this fresh fruit and all these good things every day. Then I went to have lunch with her one day, which was pretty common in our US school system. Turns out their idea of fresh and my idea of fresh was pretty different. Also, despite these appetizing menus they put up, pizza was on the menu every day, and that's what they could have every single day. And they could refuse or just not eat the veg and fruit if they didn't want to. So we made some changes to her lunch!

So what do you recommend when students choose not to eat lunch the day that it's something healthier and only eat school lunch on pizza day?

Teach them good eating habits anyway.

35 Unethical Practices That Are Surprisingly A Thing In Some Schools, As Pointed Out By Folks Online Worst? Probably the sky-high cost of attendance. The most visible evidence of this is the endless list of administrators, administrative assistants, specialists, administrative associates, the list goes on. Unless you are dirt poor and qualify for Pell Grants (US) the cost of a name-brand school is hard to swallow. Add inflation and it's even worse.

In Australia it is very common for people to be receiving the Education Maintenance Allowance to cover school fees. It still has a threshold for low income but it sounds like it is better than America. Plus things like integration aid are covered by the education department, but it can take a lot of pestering before they decide you are eligible for them.

35 Unethical Practices That Are Surprisingly A Thing In Some Schools, As Pointed Out By Folks Online I’m the case of there being a fire, I think it’s stupid we have to go in alphabetical order. So Adam is happy and healthy, but Zach just turned into ash. In my opinion, they should all just get in a line no matter what

I mean...if I see a fire my first instinct wouldn't be to wait and think...damn I can't leave the room yet, Collin is still here. Lol

I'm getting out the window I don't care. I am not walking slowly out in a orderly line. I'd find the teacher so she can account for me them I'm going home I ain't sitting in a Field. There's obviously no classes left and I can walk home on my own. They are setting themselves up for disaster.

I get what you're saying. I also get why we have them in line order. Imagine wrangling 30 7 year olds with lights flashing, sure blaring, it's getting dark and hard to breathe from smoke. Without line order kids are moving the door, pushing and shoving to be first to walk down to music or recess. In an emergency it's a lot easier to make sure you have everyone (or tell who's missing) when in an orderly line.

Still doesn't solve the problem of having to get out of there quickly. Head count is quicker and easier than alphabetisation. Everyone hold hands, all the kids already know where the exit is, teacher is last one out, sorted.

I think the only thing a teacher needs to know is how many students they have, and get that number out any way they can!

You shouldn't do the roll before leaving the building. That's just common sense. This way you'd endanger everyone in class.

Forcing kids to start earlier than they need to which hurts their mental and emotional development. In America it's like there's two societies, the well adjusted and the publicly educated.

I don't even understand this post. States differ slightly, but there are fixed date ranges for children as to what age they are when they start school, and it's possible to have them do one of the earliest years twice if parents/teachers feel they are not ready to progress. There are flaws in the education system, for sure, but being publicly educated has nothing to do with whether you are a well adjusted person.

Getting too involved in students lives outside of school. Whatever goes on outside of school walls/hours is not their business.

My mom taught H.S. for 30 years. Sometimes we would have students stay with us to escape abusive parents. Things were different in the 60's and 70's. One of those students might be dead if he had stayed at home.

We were told a million times that "as long as you're a student of this school you're always representing it, no matter the hour" . So yes, we could be punished for doing thing outside of school that they deemed inappropriate. It infuriated me.

Some kids live secret, horrible lives. My first task each year as a teacher was to see who was getting support at home and who was being neglected or abused. Sometimes it was a matter of parents being overwhelmed, mentally disturbed, or frustrated, I was never there to judge, just to refer people to available resources so that life could get bettter. Kids don't learn when their lives are in chaos. Part of learning is to know when you're in trouble and where to turn to for help.

See, my homelife was terrible, to the point where I was hurting myself, and I am grateful every single day that teachers got involved because I probably wouldn't be here.

I desperately wish teachers had gotten involved in my life outside school; with 2 abusive and highly dysfunctional students I'm genuinely amazed that I didn't commit suicide.

Except child abuse by parents, who else gonna protect those children? Tho for that you need competency too, like this one guy i know, his kid has no damage, no indication of being hurt, but when they asked some other kid if they get a slap sometimes, his kid also said "i get those too" and now they are talked to by the police and protective services... No, they weren't abusive

If it just that the student has misbehaved out of school, they have no business regulating/punishing it. On the other hand if it is something affecting their schoolwork or wellbeing they should be paying attention.
