Baller move on the farmer's part. Sucks that the guy had to buy back his own family farm in the first place, tho.
The father died with a great deal of debt with the farm as collateral

But the government won't allow us natives to reclaim ours outside of the reservations.....no surprise
You have a point here and should make it a topic! Reservations are s****y too because that is only part of the land you once owned.

in my country (B), when a farmer rents a field and that field is sold in auction, no other farmer will bid on it until the original renter gives up bidding.
In the past 60 years or more, many true people (not only indigenous) had to give their property up to vultures. It is a shame...
Load More Replies...I grew up in a farming community, and I'm telling you there's a bond that cannot be shaken. Kids were pulled out of school to help on farms, weekends went to assisting one another, and if someone was ill, we all pulled together to keep the farm running. There are skanky farmers, of course, but most are each other's allies in the battle of nature or the government.

Here’s another fun fact: every time you learn something, your brain is never the same again. It physically changes whenever you gain new information, skills, or experiences. It’s kind of overwhelming to think about, but it’s true.
The brain does this by forming new connections between neurons and strengthening or weakening existing pathways—a process otherwise known as neuroplasticity.

This reminds me of the situation with the robotic pets in Japan. They were wildly popular, because Japan loves pets but people often can't have them in their apartments. Then the company stopped making/selling them. Now, when people's robot pets break, they sometimes donate them back to the manufacturers. A Buddhist priest releases the robot's spirit to go back to its human family, and then they reuse the working parts to repair other people's robot pets, like organ donation! https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/05/01/607295346/in-japan-old-robot-dogs-get-a-buddhist-send-off
I LOVE this story. I started college at 31, in 1995. Graduated with an AA, 2 honor society stoles (president of both),, student of the year for NW college. School part-time, work part-time at son's daycare, filing clerk 2 Saturdays a month, while taking care of my son, husband and household. Never thought I could get through college, let alone be successful. Took 4 1/2 years to get a 2 year degree,. I remind myself when things are tough that I can do it if I want it bad enough.
This is the definition of an inspiring story. I once had a stud not who used his background as an excuse for not trying harder. This man shows you that you don't have to be limited.
Success stories like this often forget to mention the naysayers and detractors that the person had to look beyond in order to achieve all that they did.
I'm slightly concerned about the dates. If he were 39 in 1985 when he returned to college, in 2013 he would have been nearly 70. Inspirational, though.
They're two separate points. He had the conversation in 1985 when he would have been about 22, then went to college when he was 39. I think he's in his mid 60's now.

Your brain’s neurons communicate through dendrites, which receive signals from other neurons. These signals then travel along the axon, connecting one neuron to another. The process happens incredibly fast—often in fractions of a second—and most of the time, your brain manages it without you even being aware.
As you grow older, your brain continues to adapt. The more you challenge yourself and learn, the more your brain evolves and stays “plastic,” or flexible.
And the Netherlands too, we took in every Ukranian refugee and gave them exceptional rights to work and housing. And overall, we are impressed with the Ukranians for their willingness to work and be productive, but also their wish to return to Ukraine which is not always possible. The neuron theory of the brain was proposed in the late 19th century by biologist Ramón y Cajal, who argued that the brain is made up of distinct, interconnected cells, much like those in the rest of the body. His groundbreaking research later earned him a Nobel Prize.
However, he made one major mistake in his claim: “In adult centers the nerve paths are something fixed, ended, immutable. Everything may die, nothing may be regenerated.”

I did K9 SAR work for 10 years and can confirm that the search for human remains is hard work for the dogs, but they love their job.
Makes sense. Dogs are so in tune with human emotion that they do require positive adventures to even out the harsh realities of their jobs.

While Cajal was partly right in stating that neurons don’t regenerate once damaged (as seen in brain injuries or spinal cord damage), his assumption that the brain becomes unchangeable in adulthood was wrong.
“This has led to the myth that the brain reaches some point in early adulthood after which it never changes, except to go downhill as we age!” writes Ross Cunnington, Professor at the School of Psychology and Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland, Australia. “The brain is never ‘fixed, ended, and immutable,’ but continues to change with learning throughout all of life.”

Not sure something like this would be especially useful in that situation. A building that collapsed in an earthquake is a relatively small, defined area to search; when the flooding and destruction is spread over entire towns, they wouldn't know where to point the device. Plus a lot of the missing people were/are missing because they or their houses were swept away completely.
Load More Replies...It’s worth noting that in most parts of the brain, the neurons you’re born with are the ones you’ll have for life. Neuroplasticity is mostly concerned with forming pathways and connections between existing neurons.
However, your brain does produce new neurons through a process called neurogenesis, but only in a very small—yet important—area known as the hippocampus, which plays a key role in memory and learning. While this research is relatively recent, much remains to be discovered about the function of these new neurons, according to Cunnington.

A great way to see neuroplasticity in action is through the brain’s ability to heal after damage.
Certain parts of the brain control movement and our sense of touch, so if someone damages the motor area of their brain—such as from a stroke—they will struggle with movements related to the affected area, explains Cunnington.
“Damaged neurons do not heal or regenerate and new neurons never grow in this part of the brain, but nonetheless people can regain control of their movements,” he says. “With rehabilitation and repeated training of the weak movements, undamaged areas of the brain can remap their connections to take over function from the damaged areas.”

Interestingly, it’s possible to improve neuroplasticity by regularly challenging yourself mentally. This is especially important during childhood and adolescence, but studies suggest that maintaining high cognitive activity in midlife can lead to better brain performance later on.
Brain stimulation can take on many forms—picking up a new language, learning to play an instrument, traveling to new places, or even just taking a different route home from work.
Well not really, It's actually not a law but a strong recommendation made by jordbruksverket. You will not face any legal repercussions for leaving your dog home for more than 6 hours
I can't upvote this enough. Used to have neighbors, a young couple, who got a beautiful yellow lab. They both worked very long hours, and the poor pup would howl for hours on end. There's a happy ending, though: I recorded his howling and played it for them, and they were horrified. Within two days, they added another lab AND hired a doggy sitter for a few hours a day. No more mournful, lonely howling!
Yeah, law or not the my neighbors dogs here cry all day long from loneliness, but the get food and a quick pee in the middle, so technically still legal…
The US really needs to get on board with animal protection laws. It's shameful what the government allows.

Why do I keep reading cool stories about this man. Some sort of pattern of behavior. Hmmm.
He didn't grow up rich. When his kids said we're rich, He said I'm rich not you. You need to earn your money.
To be realistic about it, Shaquille O'Neal has probably earned the same amount of money or more from the Walmart deal. He sold about 450 million pairs of shoes through Walmart. In order to earn $40 million from that, he would only need to get 8.9 cents per pair of shoes. If he got anything more than that, then he has earned more than $40 million.
And that is another point in his favour. He didn't need to do it. But he still did it anyways because it would help a lot more people buy affordable shoes.

I just love elephants. We need to do more to protect them. They are magnificent creatures.
These were the Asian elephants that wandered into China. Millions glued to their television and mobile screens cheered as a herd of elephants wandered for seventeen months across China. The 15 creatures trekked for more than 500 kilometres from March 2020 to September 2021, giving birth to two calves along the way. The elephants’ journey began in their natural habitat at Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in Yunnan, southern China. In March 2020, the reserve was facing extreme drought, possibly causing food and water shortages for elephants. The country’s conservation policies focused on boosting the elephant population inside the reserve, which ballooned from 100 in the 1970s to around 300 in 2020. But their habitat in southern China kept shrinking. Elephants lost 62% of the areas in just three decades due to expanding human settlements and rubber or tea plantations.
As a result, they were left with less than 4% of the reserve’s area remaining suitable for their habitat, says the report. The crisis had been showing its impact for more than two decades, with human-animal conflict intensifying. Since 1991, more than 60 people have been killed during encounters with Asian elephants in Xishuangbanna, with 12 deaths recorded in 2019 alone. “Some stretches inside the reserve were growing into a state that was fairly densely packed with trees. Elephants couldn’t use this area because they were not able to cross through them,” says O’Connor. “The conservation approach is too simplistic and based on quantity rather than quality.”

There are many things about Walt Disney that are less than positive, but this was good for his housekeeper. Although it doesn't seem like she enjoyed it much, since it wasn't discovered until her death.

This is the norm in most European countries. In the UK you get a mandatory 6 weeks paid leave a year regardless of what your job is. We also get statutory sick pay, maternity leave and a workplace pension that all employers must also contribute to. And most of us don't pay 40% tax as many Americans seem to believe as the percentage of tax you pay is based on income. Most people (myself included) pay 20%. And of course, we don't pay for our healthcare and university loans come with a very generous repayment plan.

But she probably spent a lot of time writing that essay. Give her an A for creativity, but read the damn essay. If she was creative enough to do that, I would love to read her essay, even if it meant I had to figure out how to read it, find the soybean extract, and do the job the prof is paid to do. I should buy my dog a better tv? This is a reason to buy a new tv, everyone will have to agree.
And certain animated TV programs -- like Bluey, for instance -- use colors that dogs can see, so they can watch along with their humans. (There has been some discussion whether or not that was intentional on the part of Bluey's producers, but the fact remains that dogs do apparently enjoy watching the show.)
It's not the higher definition/resolution. It's the higher refresh rate. Like many other animals, dogs see motion "faster" than humans, so they'll see flickering with refresh rates up to 75Hz. Your dog will probably be perfectly happy with 720p if you can find one with a 75Hz or better refresh rate.
There was a Weimaraner who lived up the street from us when I was a kid who was at our door every Sunday night at 7pm to watch Lassie with us. After the show ended, he would ask to leave. Other than this, we rarely saw the dog. To this day, I can't figure out how he knew we were watching Lassie.

Welp, I’m hosed then. My last child was born five weeks after my twenty ninth birthday
This is really interesting! I read a couple of the news reports and one of the studies. Longer life if having first child over 25 and last child after 33, with 5% more longevity possible each year after 33. I gave birth first at 26, and had my last at 39. I'm 54, and hopefully, I'll check back in with you all in 40 years!
Twice as likely as.. how much? If it is 0.2 then 0.4 is not too much either
Not really. 95 weeks is less than two years, so if you have your first child after 33 (as per the previous post) you're still net gaining some years.

Load More Replies...Of course, if the mother has the child after the age of 33, it increases her lifespan. This is actually BS, because the study almost certainly looked at a limited population, for a very restricted geographical region, and there were likely many more factors that this sound bite is ignoring in favor of what is, essentially, click-bait. Typical BP.
The point made above wondering if it was adjusted for maternal mortality was a good one. Kind of like those historical lifespan studies that don't adjust for infant mortality.
