Baller move on the farmer's part. Sucks that the guy had to buy back his own family farm in the first place, tho.

This was common practice in Ireland in the 19th Century during the Land Wars. Part of the practice of "Boycotting" Anyone who made a bid was "gently encouraged" by dozens of other farmers to retract the bid. Glad the tradition still holds up.

in my country (B), when a farmer rents a field and that field is sold in auction, no other farmer will bid on it until the original renter gives up bidding.

I grew up in a farming community, and I'm telling you there's a bond that cannot be shaken. Kids were pulled out of school to help on farms, weekends went to assisting one another, and if someone was ill, we all pulled together to keep the farm running. There are skanky farmers, of course, but most are each other's allies in the battle of nature or the government.

Here’s another fun fact: every time you learn something, your brain is never the same again. It physically changes whenever you gain new information, skills, or experiences. It’s kind of overwhelming to think about, but it’s true.

The brain does this by forming new connections between neurons and strengthening or weakening existing pathways—a process otherwise known as neuroplasticity.

This reminds me of the situation with the robotic pets in Japan. They were wildly popular, because Japan loves pets but people often can't have them in their apartments. Then the company stopped making/selling them. Now, when people's robot pets break, they sometimes donate them back to the manufacturers. A Buddhist priest releases the robot's spirit to go back to its human family, and then they reuse the working parts to repair other people's robot pets, like organ donation! https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/05/01/607295346/in-japan-old-robot-dogs-get-a-buddhist-send-off

I LOVE this story. I started college at 31, in 1995. Graduated with an AA, 2 honor society stoles (president of both),, student of the year for NW college. School part-time, work part-time at son's daycare, filing clerk 2 Saturdays a month, while taking care of my son, husband and household. Never thought I could get through college, let alone be successful. Took 4 1/2 years to get a 2 year degree,. I remind myself when things are tough that I can do it if I want it bad enough.

They're two separate points. He had the conversation in 1985 when he would have been about 22, then went to college when he was 39. I think he's in his mid 60's now.

Your brain’s neurons communicate through dendrites, which receive signals from other neurons. These signals then travel along the axon, connecting one neuron to another. The process happens incredibly fast—often in fractions of a second—and most of the time, your brain manages it without you even being aware.

As you grow older, your brain continues to adapt. The more you challenge yourself and learn, the more your brain evolves and stays “plastic,” or flexible.

And overall, we are impressed with the Ukranians for their willingness to work and be productive, but also their wish to return to Ukraine which is not always possible. Let me remind you all here that Ukraine, like Poland, is a bufferzone between the free West and Putin's usurpations. We value Ukraine and Poland very much.

The neuron theory of the brain was proposed in the late 19th century by biologist Ramón y Cajal, who argued that the brain is made up of distinct, interconnected cells, much like those in the rest of the body. His groundbreaking research later earned him a Nobel Prize.

Read about the one SAR dog from OKC that was horribly depressed once back home. Turns out the poor dog had dried human blood on him. I believe the dog was retired soon after. I did K9 SAR work for 10 years and can confirm that the search for human remains is hard work for the dogs, but they love their job.

Some of these IDIOTS in Washington DC actually want to DISBAND the NHS and NOAA. If that were to happen the East and Gulf Coast would be epically screwed and MILLIONS of people would end up dying. It doesn't just effect Coastal Cities, look at States that are as far away like Tennessee. Hurricane Sandy nailed New Jersey and New York and they are in the very Northeast of the US. I'm BEGGING everyone to vote for KH, because if Trump gets another 4 years we will be FUBAR.

Typhoons are the Pacific equivalent of a hurricane. In Japan, typhoons are numbered on an annual basis. e.g. Typhoon Number Three would be this year's third typhoon. If a typhoon is especially destructive, then it may end up being referred to by some title usually involving the region that suffered the worst such as the "Akune Typhoon".

Amateur--George Vanderbilt once owned about 125,000 acres of NC land. Over the years he/his surviving wife and daughter donated thousands of acres to the state, in what has become Pisgah Nat'l Forest, and many other acres that make up the Blue Ridge mountains.

While Cajal was partly right in stating that neurons don’t regenerate once damaged (as seen in brain injuries or spinal cord damage), his assumption that the brain becomes unchangeable in adulthood was wrong.

“This has led to the myth that the brain reaches some point in early adulthood after which it never changes, except to go downhill as we age!” writes Ross Cunnington, Professor at the School of Psychology and Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland, Australia. “The brain is never ‘fixed, ended, and immutable,’ but continues to change with learning throughout all of life.”

Alan Rickman was also battling cancer while playing Severus Snape, which he sadly succumbed to in 2016. There are scenes where the actor played a man who knew he was soon going to die, knowing he, the man, was also soon gong to die. Can't watch those scenes without tearing up.

Not sure something like this would be especially useful in that situation. A building that collapsed in an earthquake is a relatively small, defined area to search; when the flooding and destruction is spread over entire towns, they wouldn't know where to point the device. Plus a lot of the missing people were/are missing because they or their houses were swept away completely.

It’s worth noting that in most parts of the brain, the neurons you’re born with are the ones you’ll have for life. Neuroplasticity is mostly concerned with forming pathways and connections between existing neurons.

However, your brain does produce new neurons through a process called neurogenesis, but only in a very small—yet important—area known as the hippocampus, which plays a key role in memory and learning. While this research is relatively recent, much remains to be discovered about the function of these new neurons, according to Cunnington.

Many women were hired to catalogue astronomical data because experience showed they made far fewer mistakes than men. They often pointed out patterns they came across doing so that led to papers published by the men they worked for but sadly without any credit given to them.

3 years old and she knew enough to eat berries and drink river water without falling in? I'm not saying it isn't true or exaggerated, but either her parents did an amazing job in teaching her or this little girl is incredibly smart. Most 3 yr olds I know can't manage a sippy cup, and the idea of any of them knowing enough to drink from a river without falling in is amazing. This should be a movie

A great way to see neuroplasticity in action is through the brain’s ability to heal after damage.

Certain parts of the brain control movement and our sense of touch, so if someone damages the motor area of their brain—such as from a stroke—they will struggle with movements related to the affected area, explains Cunnington.

“Damaged neurons do not heal or regenerate and new neurons never grow in this part of the brain, but nonetheless people can regain control of their movements,” he says. “With rehabilitation and repeated training of the weak movements, undamaged areas of the brain can remap their connections to take over function from the damaged areas.”

It's even better than that, as for every millimeter extra in height, the pressure on the very bottom grows, and the speed increases. So a 6x increase in capacity, might increase the total volume of waste per minute by 12x, or more depending on slope.

The unforgiveable mistake when whites "conquered" the Americas was thinking of native peoples as ignorant savages. They should've shut up, sat down, and paid attention to their sustainability methods. We wouldn't be suffering the environmental devastation we are now trying to repair by, ironically, using some of these ancient and wise ideas.

Interestingly, it’s possible to improve neuroplasticity by regularly challenging yourself mentally. This is especially important during childhood and adolescence, but studies suggest that maintaining high cognitive activity in midlife can lead to better brain performance later on.

I can't upvote this enough. Used to have neighbors, a young couple, who got a beautiful yellow lab. They both worked very long hours, and the poor pup would howl for hours on end. There's a happy ending, though: I recorded his howling and played it for them, and they were horrified. Within two days, they added another lab AND hired a doggy sitter for a few hours a day. No more mournful, lonely howling!

To be realistic about it, Shaquille O'Neal has probably earned the same amount of money or more from the Walmart deal. He sold about 450 million pairs of shoes through Walmart. In order to earn $40 million from that, he would only need to get 8.9 cents per pair of shoes. If he got anything more than that, then he has earned more than $40 million.

And that is another point in his favour. He didn't need to do it. But he still did it anyways because it would help a lot more people buy affordable shoes.

These were the Asian elephants that wandered into China. Millions glued to their television and mobile screens cheered as a herd of elephants wandered for seventeen months across China. The 15 creatures trekked for more than 500 kilometres from March 2020 to September 2021, giving birth to two calves along the way. The elephants’ journey began in their natural habitat at Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in Yunnan, southern China. In March 2020, the reserve was facing extreme drought, possibly causing food and water shortages for elephants. The country’s conservation policies focused on boosting the elephant population inside the reserve, which ballooned from 100 in the 1970s to around 300 in 2020. But their habitat in southern China kept shrinking. Elephants lost 62% of the areas in just three decades due to expanding human settlements and rubber or tea plantations.

    Stannous Flouride
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

As a result, they were left with less than 4% of the reserve’s area remaining suitable for their habitat, says the report. The crisis had been showing its impact for more than two decades, with human-animal conflict intensifying. Since 1991, more than 60 people have been killed during encounters with Asian elephants in Xishuangbanna, with 12 deaths recorded in 2019 alone. “Some stretches inside the reserve were growing into a state that was fairly densely packed with trees. Elephants couldn’t use this area because they were not able to cross through them,” says O’Connor. “The conservation approach is too simplistic and based on quantity rather than quality.”

If you’re feeling motivated to boost your brainpower, remember not to overdo it. Rest is just as important, and research shows that sleep plays a key role in the growth of dendrites, which help neurons communicate, as we mentioned earlier. So, take it one day at a time—learn and explore at your own pace. Stay curious!

There is a tree much bigger in the US. In Utah, there is a 106-acre forest that appears to be 47,000 aspen trees. But it is actually only one tree with 47,000 trunks all connected together underground.

Reading the Wiki articles the Utah forest is a forest of clones as in the roots moved through the ground rising up to be individual trees, where as the The Great Banyan is literally one tree where branches have grown supports down to the ground to take the weight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Banyan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pando_(tree)#:~:text=A%20male%20clonal%20organism%2C%20Pando,the%20largest%20known%20aspen%20clone.

I love the fact that this applies to pretty much all cats, not just domestic housecats. If you put a big cardboard box out in the Vietnamese jungle a half hour later, there will be a tiger curled up inside. Want to catch a lion on the African veldt--just put out a box and wait.

Warning. This treatment doesn't work. Dozens of people from around the world are going to a quack doctor offering this treatment. The fact is that when nerves are severed, the ends shrivel and no amount of stem cell therapy will connect the nerves again. In the featured case it was just a bruise that healed naturally, the stem cell injections didn't help.

I found out when I came home from college. My mother, who had been seeing the dog every day, said she "thought" the dog was getting fat. She was enormous. I promise it didn't take any smarts at all on the part of the dog - she just enjoyed the food and attention.

I have friends in Arizona who had a dog called SED, which stans for "Somebody Else's Dog". They think he had been abandoned by his previous owners, but everyone in the neighborhood took care of him--he was a happy little guy who loved his independence, so he'd spend a few nights here, a few nights there, making his rounds of the neighborhood and getting fed five times a day.

Our Judeo Christian traditions and calender only account for the last 8-10k years. See, we have been around much longer with religions that predate the ones we know today. What has been done to people in the name of the bible is atrocious. What came before? Not nothing . Animism and paganism. Ways of being in the world that place humans as part of the system and not rulers of it all. An old way of being that we can use to replace the dominating role of our species. A species that has the divine right to consume and contaminate (according to the bible). Something to think about while we try to find solutions to undo the damage our species has caused the planet in a very short time.

Not sure about the wages, but European countries will have at least 4-5 weeks holiday a year, plus public holidays on top of that. And we pay our waiting staff a living wage, tips are usually optional (although added service charge is getting more common in England).

This is the norm in most European countries. In the UK you get a mandatory 6 weeks paid leave a year regardless of what your job is. We also get statutory sick pay, maternity leave and a workplace pension that all employers must also contribute to. And most of us don't pay 40% tax as many Americans seem to believe as the percentage of tax you pay is based on income. Most people (myself included) pay 20%. And of course, we don't pay for our healthcare and university loans come with a very generous repayment plan.

Sometimes one doesn't have to be smart, just clever. My daughter was once given an assignment to write an essay in the style of a superhero. She chose Groot. (I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot? I am Groot. etc) Played the system and got a 100%.

But she probably spent a lot of time writing that essay. Give her an A for creativity, but read the damn essay. If she was creative enough to do that, I would love to read her essay, even if it meant I had to figure out how to read it, find the soybean extract, and do the job the prof is paid to do. How do we know if things like this are 100% true? I just don't believe that a professor would award a top mark without reading the essay.

I think you are incredibly naive if you believe that every professor completely reads every paper, from every student, from every class, every year. I know of one who admits to skimming & then sending them through a grammar/plagiarism program. It is 100% feasible that this happened,

Here's a better picture, showing a very old fish ladder. Salmon can manage some amazing leaps, but other fish need smaller steps. Kayakers refer to paddling upstream as attaining or spawning, and use a similar technique. You paddle up into an eddy to gain speed, and then ferry across the slightly high water flowing past the top of the eddy to gain some elevation. Untitled-6...146e66.jpg Untitled-6713682146e66.jpg

That's a Tessla valve, it works by restricting the water flow using its own pressure so it doesn't become too great.

And certain animated TV programs -- like Bluey, for instance -- use colors that dogs can see, so they can watch along with their humans. (There has been some discussion whether or not that was intentional on the part of Bluey's producers, but the fact remains that dogs do apparently enjoy watching the show.)

It's not the higher definition/resolution. It's the higher refresh rate. Like many other animals, dogs see motion "faster" than humans, so they'll see flickering with refresh rates up to 75Hz. Your dog will probably be perfectly happy with 720p if you can find one with a 75Hz or better refresh rate.

There was a Weimaraner who lived up the street from us when I was a kid who was at our door every Sunday night at 7pm to watch Lassie with us. After the show ended, he would ask to leave. Other than this, we rarely saw the dog. To this day, I can't figure out how he knew we were watching Lassie.

His economy was built off the slave trade (his occupation before politics was slave trader) displacement and genocide of indigenous peoples and the plunder of their resources. He wasn't an economic genius, he stole stuff to pay off debt. The human misery came for free and he was absolutely fine with that.

íYou got used to it ... IF ... They say it takes around 66 days for something to become a usual thing. That wasn't true for me, when I changed my work schedule to 6 - 14. All my colleagues said Hey-1-2-months-and-you'll-be-used-to-it. So, after half a year living like a zombie, because of waking up at 4.30 and no sleep till moidnight, I just quit that job. My body and genetical inheritance decided, I'm a nighrt owl. Now, I'm working late-shifts, and very pleased. I have no waking-up-alarm-terror.

Because she felt too hot or cold? I’m assuming they said to look for “a woman in a red jacket” or something similar. She wouldn’t have been the only one wearing a particular colour and she would have probably assumed that they would have done a head count or recognised her, so clearly they were looking for somebody else.

Weird, I seen to remember that name, if not all the details, from basic chemistry classes in school. Yes, it's natural - as logic suggests. Polyphenols are a whole, abundant class of compounds that give - among other things - color and taste to many plants. Quick Google would reveal as much ;)

Of course, as each child reduces their lifespan by 95 weeks. (Plz correct if I'm wrong, I'm refering to the previous image but BP is so laggy that its not loading)

It sorta make sense, I guess. Being able to give birth after 40 seems to indicate that the woman is healthy, which might be the reason such woman can reach 100.

This is really interesting! I read a couple of the news reports and one of the studies. Longer life if having first child over 25 and last child after 33, with 5% more longevity possible each year after 33. I gave birth first at 26, and had my last at 39. I'm 54, and hopefully, I'll check back in with you all in 40 years!

Not really. 95 weeks is less than two years, so if you have your first child after 33 (as per the previous post) you're still net gaining some years.

If it makes you feel any better, it sure looks like a skewed stat. I wonder if it's adjusted for maternal mortality.

Of course, if the mother has the child after the age of 33, it increases her lifespan. This is actually BS, because the study almost certainly looked at a limited population, for a very restricted geographical region, and there were likely many more factors that this sound bite is ignoring in favor of what is, essentially, click-bait. Typical BP.

The point made above wondering if it was adjusted for maternal mortality was a good one. Kind of like those historical lifespan studies that don't adjust for infant mortality.

If he was meant to die in his early 40s and lived to almost 50, it could be true.. it says it increases your lifespan, but obviously some people die young. Maybe having daughters gave him another few years on earth. We can't know for sure..

Hannah Fry did an episode on this in her podcast. Soldiers on leave or just back from war = more regular intercourse meaning women were getting pregnant earlier in their menstrual cycle which results in more male babies

One theory is that taller men tend to survive wars more often than shorter men, and also are more likely to have sons than short men.

One anecdote isn’t science or even statistically meaningful. (If the previous post was science.) As in “my grandfather smoked 30 cigarettes a day and lived to be 90” doesn’t mean you can draw any conclusions from it.
