It’s wild to think that knowledge and information wasn’t as easily and readily available just a few decades ago. Thanks to the internet, it now reaches billions of people on demand, and the world is better off because of it.
Now, old wives’ tales were among the many things that worked before the internet in terms of spreading information. Granted, they were often dubious or even superstitious, but their prevalence was strong.
Well, turns out, not all of it was hogwash as folks on Reddit were recently sharing old wives’ tales that turned out to be true. Thanks, internet!

Gargling with salt water helps a sore throat as well as tooth and gum issues.
It is titled "True old wives tails" - should be tales...
Load More Replies...I've been told to use it by my dentist a few times. The salt sucks the gunk out. I also use a strong saltwater solution to clean infected cuts.
Had a tooth pulled just yesterday. Was specifically instructed in person and in written instructions to do just this four times a day.
Load More Replies...Advice passed down from grandmother to mother to me. When I was in high school, my biology teacher explained why this works. It doesn't completely kill the virus or bacteria throughout the body, but it draws water out of the viral or bacterial cells within the respiratory system causing them to die, thus reducing inflammation. Also helps with canker sores.
Hydrogen peroxide works wonders on mouth sores. Almost immediate amelioration. Most containers say "Oral Rinse" on them.
Do you swish with it to help the teeth and gusls? I've used it for sore throats and to get gunk out of my tonsils (I'm too old to have them removed 😒), but I'm curious how to use it for teeth and gums.
When rain is coming, your joints hurt.
I used to roll my eyes and laugh when Granny said her arthritis was acting up because it was going to rain. I was 10 years old.
I'm now 53 and not laughing. Granny 1, me 0
I'm not at all sure the number of doctor visits is relevant. How many people go to the doctor for generic aches and pains, especially if it's not new?
Load More Replies...I get headaches when there's a storm brewing.....I still get laughed at for it, but it's true!
Sometimes the difference in pressure from a weather change gives me headache.
Load More Replies...I aggree with this I used to think this was BS, untill I broke my hip when I was 21. Now I can predict the weather based on how my hip feels when I stand up. Most people think it is fake, and I certainly don't know how it works but it works
Yes! and it's weird how this shows up. My right ear canal is...a problem, but something it's given me is a sensitivity to atmospheric pressure. It's usually not helpful - storms coming through, slight changes on hilly roads, pop goes the ear...but I learned I can feel a tornado a few miles away a couple years ago. Suppose that might come in handy, at least if I can get past the "head explodey" feeling.
Load More Replies...It's the barometric pressure, not the pending water falling from the sky, that effects joints and scar tissue.
You’re absolutely correct. I track the barometric pressure. I was crushed in an auto accident in 83 the fallout from all those injuries have stained my existence
Load More Replies...I had thyroid cancer. Had thyroid and lymph nodes removed. My neck now signals (a quick shot of pain) that rain is coming, three days before it arrives. It's more accurate than the weather forecast. I think it's reacting to atmospheric shift.
I care what experts say as they're often the ones with the access to pain relief and support! That's why getting research that proves (or disproves, whatever) would actually be extremely helpful.
Load More Replies...I'm in my early 30s and have this problem. Apparently it's most likely to do with the changes in barometric pressure that accompany rainy weather.
VERY true. My cancer metastasized to my bones and I can give the weather forecast.
I can't believe there are over 400 comments and nobody has mentioned one of the most valuable old wives' tales: That garlic had medicinal powers for a wide variety of ailments.
Not to mention it works perfectly against vampires. I've been using garlic for years and never had any encounters
Oh, yeah, garlic is very good for you. Particularly fresh garlic. Don't they even have garlic pills?
A salad of fresh: broccoli, red onion, garlic, and tomatoes with a vinaigrette dressing will reduce a cold by several days. It does work and I've used it many times.
If you eat a lot people will naturally social distance!
Load More Replies...Garlic oil is a strong natural antibiotic, and though rarely needed these days, still the most effective treatment for gangrene. Handy to know in hard times.
So, old wives’ tales as a concept originated centuries ago in the form of the oral tradition of storytelling. The whole idea behind old wives’ tales was to teach lessons and make concepts like death or aging easier to understand.
These tales were primarily aimed at children, but once they grew up, it was easy to understand why some grownups began picking them up too.

“Doomed is the child who, when kissed on the forehead, tastes salty. He is cursed and will soon die.”
It’s cystic fibrosis. Nowadays, we know that cystic fibrosis is due to a non functional protein that regulates salt transport; when that protein doesn’t work, you get thick, sticky mucus clogging up every membrane… and a whole bunch of salt being pumped onto the skin.
Many diseases existed for a looooooong time before we had the framework to understand them, but our ancestors were paying attention and trying to understand these tragedies through the lenses that they had. And sometimes, that’s how you get an old wives’ tale that is right on the money!
My twin brother died of CF. He was diagnosed at 3 days old because they did a salt test, and they had to cut him open and remove part of his bowel because he had a blockage and wasn't able to use the bathroom on his own. This is also due to the mucus and malabsorbtion issues that are symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis. It's an absolutely horrible disease. However, yes. Typically, the first way they test someone for Cystic Fibrosis is to do a salt test to check the salt levels on your skin.
Traditional healers used many of the same methods used by science (observation and experimentation) in order to reach their conclusions, even hundreds of years before technology made medical advances so much faster and easier.
Generally people would only sweat if its hot, if they have just exercised or if they are sick... at this time Generally if a child was sick they would die so they're not wrong their either
Load More Replies...Diabetics, at least type-1, either taste sweet or nutty, depending on glucose levels.
People gave been able to observe and diagnose sickness for millenia. Modern medicines biggest advancement is in determining the cause and creating effective treatments.
TIL it's apparently not weird to go around tasting kids' foreheads.
Could be just a little kid who was running around and became sweaty.... salty
Now, one of the major reasons why old wives’ tales were usually fake was because of the fact that they were most often propagated by illiterate women and communicated to children. If they were trying to scare kids off from a particular behavior, it didn’t have to be true—they just had to stop them from doing something. And it was really hard to fact-check them.
Pregnant women should not be near cat litter. Source: am blind in one eye from toxoplasmosis acquired in utero.
I never knew this was considered an "old wive's tale" I always thought it was a well known proven fact.
I'm also pretty sure cat litter didn't exist when old wives were telling tales. This is modern advice from scientific understanding.
Load More Replies...I am not supposed to clean my cat's litter boxes because I am immuno-suppressed (to prevent rejection of my transplant). Oh well, what am I to do? They keep pooping and I keep scooping.
Sounds like a job for masks and soap, that should do, right?
Load More Replies...There's nothing wrong with being near kitty litter as toxoplasmosis is spread through ingestion and isn't airborne. The issue is the cat or person cleaning the litter touching infected poop, touching something else that either touches food, or touched food directly and then you eat or drink that. Basically, someone else should clean the litter daily because the parasite does not become infectious until 1 to 5 days after it is shed in a cat’s feces. Wash hands with soap and water after cleaning out a cat’s litter box, obviously, and just make sure anything that the pregnant person eats is washed and/or cooked well. Pretty much how you should handle things anyways. source: the CDC.
So for the record the most common mode of Toxo transmission in humans is handling raw meat. It takes about 3 days in the environment for Toxo to become infective in cat feces. If you scoop daily, wear gloves, and wash hands, the risk is basically zero. I do, however, tell the partners of pregnant women they MUST scoop the box...because i'm not letting a lazy partner get away with not doing it unless they have a medical issue :D
This. I've caught Toxoplasmose too while pregnant in first trimester when I didn't know I'm pregnant. I've never cleaned a cat's litter box in my life. I guess I ate some raw meat (not uncommon here in Germany), probably on a bun with Mett or Tatar).
Load More Replies...Since I did litterboxes all the time as a kid, I tested positive for toxoplasmosis the first time I got pregnant. I avoided litter boxes during pregnancies but my doctor said I was probably immune since I had the antibodies, but I took the precaution.
This isn't an old wives' tale. It's literally the standard guidance from any OB doc when you're pregnant.
But then it's too late. Source: me (caught toxo in first trimester). It should be mandatory in sex ed in school, where we' ve been taught about HIV, chlamydia etc and "don't drink alcohol and smoke in a pregnancy" but not a peep about folic acid intake or the 4 diseases you ought NOT to catch while pregnant. I felt sooo dumb (at then 33years and an university diploma 🫣)
Load More Replies...Most people contract toxoplasmosis from inadequately cooked meat. This parasite is shockingly common. Affecting ~10% of people in the US and as much as 50% of the world's population as a whole. The vast, vast majority of people infected with the parasites will never know because the symptoms of active infection are generally mild and unremarkable (though there is emerging research suggesting that the organism may cause behavior changes similar to those seen with other organisms).
Yes, this 🎯💯. Other things I learnt while undergoing "toxo while pregnant treatment": every year 1% of the population catches toxo. //Only 10% of the freshly infected develop symptoms at all (I've been "lucky" to have had nasty bumps on the lymph nodes, like in the "Mad Max Fury Road" movie) so they could treat me with pills. // Take the pills (all 22 a day) even if it compares to "half a chemo therapy" (my GP). You have a 30/30/30% chance of having a miscarriage/born but deaf or blind or epileptic in every possible stage/ alive and completely healthy at first DURING pregnancy BUT It cuts the chance from 15% to 6% that your healthy BORN baby develops mild forms of bad vision/hard of hearing/epilepsy at any point in the next 18years! // Don't google pics of Toxoplasmosis babies.
Load More Replies...NO-ONE should go near kitty litter without MAJOR protection, especially if your cats are outdoors cats but even if they're indoors cats. Toxoplasmosis is a brain-controlling parasite. It will make you neurotic and not mind, or even like, the smell of old cat mess.
More of an old nurse's tale, but redheads need more anesthetic. Turns out that there is a linked gene to red hair that increases resistance or metabolism or something to the drug.
At any rate, waking up in the middle of a full colonoscopy sucks. Hearing the doctor say, "Ah, s**t, she's awake, give her another one..."
And the nurse, all melodramatic as she pushes another syringes worth into your IV, saying to him, "Are you *SURE*, Doctor???" as your eyes slowly close again is especially awesome.
I regained partial conciousness during a surgery on my thumb. I was a hardcore alcoholic, so it wasn't enough anesthetic for me.
This happened to me when i was having my wisdom teeth extracted. The recovery was a nightmare.
Load More Replies...Ginger here, I've heard it's also possible that redheads have a higher pain tolerance as well
As a redhead, back when I had hair, I say the first part is true I have to get about 4 shots at the dentist to be numb but also as someone who has had a colonoscopy I can say that a nurse does not act as an anesthesiologist, that is a doctor.
When I woke up under anesthesia it was a nurse who pushed the plunger.

Nurses used to put Jaundices babies on window sills until their color returned. No idea how they figured it out but it’s actually a legitimate cure!
I live next to a hospital, and from my window I can see the blue light from the tiny solarium in the maternity ward
When I was an infant I had a high Bilirubin and was put on a billi-bed. Got my first tan at 2ish days old.
Load More Replies...my grandson was born very jaundiced and premature as well. when finally released from hospital my son was told to expose him to sunlight as often as possible, thankfully we lived in an area with warm temps. so, several times a day he would take him to his patio and hold him out in the sun. have a couple of great pics of him holding him up like rafiki in the lion king.
My son was born jaundiced in 2020 and we would sit in our rocking chair in front of a big south facing window. They sent him home with a bili blanket but we preferred holding him in a sunny window and it worked wonderfully!
Load More Replies...They figured it out using the scientific process. Someone noticed that jaundiced babies recovered more quickly if when they were closer to the window. Therefore, they started testing, and realised it was indeed the case. Others tested, and the results were confirmed. Then lights were tried instead of window. Some proved more effective than others. They knew the solution before they understood the mechanism. It's a bit like this just now with some forms of migraine medication. They know some drugs work, but they haven't yet found out why.
I'm just glad they know and can provide relief to those of us who are cursed with migraines.
Load More Replies...My baby brother was born with jaundice (in the 70’s) and my mom was told to move his bassinet from window to window so he would stay in the sunshine. It worked.
Our son was 11 weeks premature and was under the light for a couple of days after he was born in 1977. He even had tiny sungoggles!
My baby cousin had this when i when i was little, she was very small and i thought they put her in the sun to make her grow 😂
We had to move our newborn's bassinet to the window with most sunlight for a few days, for the same reasons, and that was in 2020. It works wonders.
We had to leave our preemie on a console near a single pane window in our old Victorian house,. Double pane would’ve blocked out the positive benefits from the sun. It definitely helped!
As the centuries went by and human progress was ever so surely moving forward, old wives’ tales started getting debunked. One of the biggest oofs out there is the idea people can catch a cold from the cold.
That has since been proven to be false because a cold is caused by an infection, and not the temperature.
If he cheats with you, he’ll cheat on you.

Honey as topical medicine. It’s actually used in hospitals now for certain kinds of wound dressings. It’s anti microbial and keeps other s**t from getting in the wound.
Again, organic honey, not the ones bought in big stores. They have been overprocessed.
You mean raw honey, there is no way to guarantee honey being organic!
Load More Replies...The honey they use in hospitals is quite specific. All honey has antimicrobial properties related to the drying properties of highly concentrated sugar solutions, the natural presence of hydrogen peroxide added by the bees, and it's high acidity. However, medical-grade honey is produced from bees pollinating tea trees. This honey is loaded with compounds from that plant, giving it an extra boost (think tea tree oil). You can buy this type of honey, often sold as Manuka honey, but it is both very expensive and somewhat of an acquired taste (I hate it, personally). Great for wounds though! We get it under the name brand Medihoney.
That's been around for millenia - used honey dressings in the 70's and was told that it was common in medieval times. We NOW know that honey is antibacterial, but we knew it worked, just not why.
Works better if you add some lemon juice and a shot of whiskey to it.
Load More Replies...Yes. Honey had been used for millenia as a wound dressing for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties.
Red sky at night, sailors’ delight
A red sky appears when dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by high pressure. This scatters blue light leaving only red light to give the sky its notable appearance. A red sky at sunset means high pressure is moving in from the west, so therefore the next day will usually be dry and pleasant.
— Met office
More commonly "Red sky at night, Shepherds' delight, Red ski in the morning,Shepherds' warning". It's a predictor of weather on land, not so much at sea.
"Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning." That is the version I learned.

I’ve seen so many sunsets and sunrises that I proved this through repetition. Everybody is so skeptical though

Other cold-related myths include: vaccinations can make you sick (they don’t, it’s a killed virus), heaps of vitamin C will keep away illness (studies can’t prove it), and chicken soup cures colds (nope, wrong again, it’s just comfort food that hydrates you, and perhaps can help ease congestion, but otherwise doesn’t have any specific effect on a viral infection).
Drinking gelatin to up amniotic fluid during pregnancy.
They wanted to schedule a c-section at 32 weeks for my kid, due to low amniotic fluid. My friends midwife told me to mix gelatin packets into apple juice and drink it before it started to thicken.. 3x a day. Brought my levels up from a 3 to an 8.. and managed to keep the kid baking for another 4 weeks.. she was born at 36 weeks, weighing 4lbs 3oz.. so, the gods only know how tiny she would have been at 32 weeks..
She was discharged with me three days later, at 4lbs 1oz.. perfectly healthy, besides being as tiny as a doll.. and she didn't wear clothes for four months because I was terrified of breaking her..
But, yeah, I *never* thought it would work..
When my little sister was born premature, mom borrowed some of my Cabbage Patch clothes for her. They were still baggy.
Aww, how interesting. She must have been real little!
Load More Replies...I'm not so sure about this one. All proteins (including gelatin, collegen and insulin) are broken down into their component amino acids in the stomach. That is one reason why some drugs cannot be orally administered.
It doesn't work like a drug. Nutrition and hydration can affect amniotic fluid levels.
Load More Replies...If your baby weighed 4lbs at 36 weeks, they were going to be tiny at 40 anyway.
my youngest as born at 39 weeks ad weighed 5 lb 9 ounces. so tiny and little
Load More Replies...In general, doctors prefer C-sections, which is why they are on the increase. They can be scheduled and take less time for medical personnel, unlike a natural birth. Time more woman got a second opinion on this racket.
A lot of the ones about herbal remedies. You can grow a lot of things that pharmaceutical companies deconstruct and reconstruct to make into pills. Common weeds are edible and good for your health. It’s crazy how much we’ve forgotten about the benefits of plants.
Except the pill has a carefully measured amount of active ingredient, whereas with the plant you never know if you're getting a therapeutic, recreational or lethal dose. There's a reason doctor's don't have huge herb gardens anymore.
This is true, but there are some herbs that work but are not available as a drug because nobody's funded the process of producing one.
Load More Replies...Very interesting one is ground-ivy (gill-over-the-ground, creeping charlie, alehoof, tunhoof, catsfoot, field balm, or run-away-robin, there are many common names for it in English, in Latin it is Glechoma hederacea). It is common weed in Europe, but boy this plant can do magic for cough. Dry cough, wet cough,... doesn't matter, make a tea (or prepare it as sirup) and you will be fine in no time. It is also amazing herb for pork and chicken.
Ground ivy is one the herbs in the mix I drink as a tea every day to prevent me getting migraines. It took a while for the herbalist to get the mix right, but I am so happy to have this option now. We pinned my migraines down to problems with blood flow within the brain, I'm not sure exactly what ground ivy specifically is doing, but I ain't messing with my mix. Those migraines used to lay me out for four days at a time, and my worst day would see me vomiting if I so much as had a thought (I'm not even kidding), forget hearing something.
Load More Replies...Too many folks equate herbal remedies and essential oils. They are not the same thing.
Such information! Those words in that order are a waste of human capital.
Taxol is a chemotherapy drug. It's main component is extracted from the yew tree and is used to treat several types of cancer in combination with carboplatin.

A good senator is a poor senator
Not rich due to insider trading and bribes then. Funny how Congressmen in the US have no money when they get into office but become millionaires on a $200k annual salary.
Baloney. If they leave rich, it’s because they came in rich; the Senate is filled with multimillionaires because they were already rich. After they leave congress, many of them go to work for lobbying firms or former constituents.
Load More Replies...Not everywhere. Some countries have high salaries for senators, and others have restrictive salaries so only wealthy people can run for office. This is an adage from Ancient Rome...
Nowadays, old wives’ tales are quite literally a thing of the past and anything can be proven or disproven in just a few moments online without having to rely on dubious maiden wisdom.
However, the fact that something is an old wives’ tale doesn’t mean it’s automatically fake. This listicle is proof of it.
A cut onion rubbed on insect bites takes away the sting. I’ve tried it on wasp and ant bites and works instantly.
And to keep from crying when you cut the onion, make sure that you don't emotionally bond with it first
The back of a metal spoon, warmed up, also relieves itches and stings.
I spent a lot of my time outdoors, so I used broadleaf plantain for mosquito bites and bee and nettle stings. I'd chew it up and apply it like a poultice right on the spot.
Chicken soup when you're sick
Gotta stay hydrated!
Probably that it’s a good mix of hydration, warmth, protein, carbs and vegetables.
I don't know how effective they are, but a lot of the more commonly used herbs have anti-inflammatory properties as well.
Load More Replies...I read a long time ago about a study that compared the effects of taking chicken soup to other liquids during illness and it found a significant positive effect of chicken soup. In other words, it's not just the hydration, there's something else going on.
I think it's a combination of the garlic and other vegs and herbs compounds in the chicken - cyseine, if I remember the research correctly. The heat, hydration, and electrolytes all help, but research says it's definitely something in chicken soup, they're just still debating what
Load More Replies...Whenever I get a Chinese takeaway I always get their chicken noodle soup, it just makes me feel better. I can't explain it as it's not a hydration thing but it's just a little boost to my system.
I read somewhere that it has an enzyme in it that helps boost your immune system (doubly so if you make it with garlic), and thus helps you get better quicker
My mom had what she called an old Indian trick and was able to predict if it was going to rain within 30 minutes. In college I learned that is it got closer to raining leaves would cup to catch the water and when my mom would go outside and look at the tree leaves she could like look and see if they were cupping and she would be able to predict if it was going to rain.
Poplar trees do this in a spectacular way! As a kid, I used to go play in the fields with a friend, and there were poplar trees around. As soon as those leaves turned, we quickly cycled home to be back before the rain. Even with an already overcast sky, keeping an eye on the poplars proved useful. I've noticed this many times afterwards, too. It's useful knowledge when you're out and about camping!
Load More Replies...I can tell if it's going to rain by smelling the petrichor that gets carried with the wind, and I'm usually right with that
It also works with landscapes: if you can see clearly just like things seems closer, it means rain is coming. My granny used to say "the mountain looks closer when the rain is."
Me and my husband can do this. When the leaves looked turned over and sometimes you can even smell it in the air.
Looking at the oncoming clouds has been proven fairly effective, too.
It rains in 30 minutes every single time it's cloudy, anywhere at anytime?
Load More Replies...I used to work at a hack stable. The other woman that worked with me would let me take the first ride in the winter when she saw the leaves curled up tight on the rhododendron! I would freeze, and finally she told me what she was doing! (She would wait to take the next ride when it would warm up!). Nature tells a lot if you know how to look!
You can also use rhododendron leaves as a sort of thermometer- the more tightly curled they are, the colder it is.
Where I live, my Granny always said that it would rain when the leaves were all flipped upside down. It is a pretty accurate method.
For example, older folks experience joint pain right before rain because the barometric pressure tends to decrease, which in turn might make the muscles, tendons and other tissue around joints expand and put more pressure on the joints. Hence the pain.
A while back, scientists set out to prove false the old wives tale that if a pregnant woman has lots of of heartburn, her baby will be born with a thick head of hair. Except…they ended up doing the opposite. Turns out heartburn really is associated with a baby having lots of hair:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17150070/
I had bad heartburn with all three of mine and they never had much hair at all
Maybe all mothers to hairy babys have heartburn, but not all mothers with heartburn have hairy babys.
Load More Replies...Yeah, still not true. My youngest daughter had soooooo much hair, never saw anything like it before. We had to cut her fringe when she was only a couple of weeks old because it was growing into her eyes. We had to do it ourselves because no Hairdresser would cut a baby's hair that young. I had ZERO heartburn.
The statement in the OP is not the same as the conclusion of the article. The OP says that "if a pregnant woman has lots of of heartburn, her baby will be born with a thick head of hair", but the article says there is "an association between heartburn severity during pregnancy and newborn hair ". The latter does not say that heartburn definitely results in lots of hair---it just says there is an association (i.e., correlation does not imply causation). There is possibly a set of other criteria that are causing both heartburn and more hair (e.g., maybe heartburn and hair are more common in certain ethnic groups). And anyway, the study only looked at 64 women, so I wouldn't get too excited about it.
Just to be clear this WAS NOT an actual medical study and all results were anecdotal. Only 64 women were used. There was no control group Only 49 of the women reported that the birth of the baby had NORMAL/above normal hair growth. Which means that 15 of the babies had below normal/zero hair growth. Considering the small amount of women in the study, then the results were far from conclusive.
This is a sample size of 64, not big enough to do anything but say that there *may* be an association and more study is needed. We don't know if the heartburn causes hairy infants or if hairy infants cause heartburn or if there's some other factor or even if this is generalizable to the general population. Science is about creating a body of evidence and one study doesn't make a body of evidence.
Was never true for me. The child had less heartburn with was the one that had the most hair. Maybe I'm just weird.
This did for me, I had the worst heartburn/indigestion with 2 of my kids both had the thickest full head of hair, the other 2 just standard pregnancy level heartburn and they had much finer hair (like me) and not a lot of it
I lived with a bottle of antacids in hand my entire third trimester, and had a very hairy baby. Very thick, long, full head of hair. Every midwife who saw the kid after she was born was like “oh, your heartburn must’ve been awful” 😂

Beer makes breast milk drop. I had never heard of this before giving birth, and a couple people had asked me while pregnant if I had my beer lined up for after I gave birth and just laughed it off. A few days after giving birth my milk still wasn’t coming in and at the pediatrician, she said, “Listen it’s an old wives tale but I swear by it, drink a beer. Preferably non alcoholic because you just need the hops.” After the appointment I grabbed a case of Heineken 0 chugged two and within hours we were breastfeeding. I now give Heineken 0 as a gift to expectant moms.
I wonder if O'doules would work? It's non-alcoholic (my pop used to drink it all the time).
Malt beer (Malzbier), a non alcoholic, dark very sweet malty beverage was recommended to me in case milk doesn't flow enough "BUT only half a bottle a.m. and half a bottle p.m. is more than enough and DONT drink it on day 1, or you will feel like a cow not milked enough on day 2". People can smell illness (at least in babies). I cant link a paper because I'm busy proving it! So far in my research people can smell the difference between a well baby vs a poorly baby
My wife usually knows that I caught some virus before I do, just because the smell. It is creepy "oh, I smell that you will stay home tomorrow" is pretty creepy line, especially because she was right 100% so far.
I'm guessing she has a high sense of smell. People emit various smells naturally (think pheremones & hormones). When tuned in, which is difficult for us average folks, you can smell changes from the norm. Like we talk about animals noticing, you can smell increased stress, illness, fear, etc. There was am amateur reporter who tried an experiment of not bathing (with soaps & such, just plain water) for a year. He said after a couple of months, those little changes became very noticeable to both him and his g/f.

As a mum of 2 I concur.....I could tell a few days before each illness hit my girls. The smell was very distinctive...and I've since noticed it with nieces and nephews that arrived after my girls. Not sure whether it's because it's amongst relatives that the change in smell can be noticed? Can't say I've noticed it amongst work colleagues...but then again, they are all physically (if not emotionally) adult!
I hope your paper can convince GPs to take it seriously. Why is it legit for a dog but not a human to detect illness by smell?
A woman in my town was working with scientists to help them develop a test because she can smell parkinsions disease.
Load More Replies...This is a very interesting one. I think it is only true for some people. When I was a professor with my own office, I was pretty sure that I could smell when students were contagious. Especially in the winter months. Certain individuals would come into my office hours and I would be really uncomfortable meeting with them, because I was sure they smelled unwell. And then 2 or 3 days later, I would get a terrible cold or flu.
Not to downgrade human sense of smell but dogs can do it also. The reason I have the best diabetes dog ever! He smells high and low blood glucose and keeps me safe. Love that people can also do this for babies!
I'm no medical expert or anything but I've always been around a lot of children and babies and can definitely tell if a baby/ infant is sick by things like smell or just look. A few years ago I went to visit my sister and told her to get my niece to a doctor and demand a blood test as she was anaemic, my sister didn't believe me (I'm not a parent so what do I know?) It took her nearly 3 months before she finally got her tested and I was right! A few months ago I was at a child's birthday party and held a young baby and instantly knew the baby had a chest infection (very distinctive vibrations in his chest and back) I sought out his mum and asked her if he'd been ill, she insisted he was fine and her and a group of other mum's told me I was being ridiculous and he was fine. I ended up getting a few older women (grandmothers) and asking them, they all agreed and the mum finally agreed to take him to the doctor. He had a nasty chest infection and ended up being hospitalised.
Another cool trick is to rub ammonia onto a mosquito bite to stop it from itching. The idea lies in the ammonia solution equalizing the counter pH of the itching caused by the bite.
My grandmother always insisted that a new mom in the family get up and walk as soon after delivery as possible. Said if you stay in the bed alot after giving birth your hips would spread and stay that way. Turns out the hormone changes during childbirth cause your cartilage to become flexible so your hips can widen some. It wears off fast though so if you stay in the bed for days, like they did back in the day, your cartilage hardens back up spread out. When you walk your center of gravity is in your pelvis and pushes it back together. I've never seen a medical study on it but none of the women in my family have wider hips after having kids.
The Coori people (aboriginal tribe for international peeps) say this too, and too keep walking while pregnant and no be bed ridden if possible
Yeah, my wife was SO mad at me for the suggestion after our 1st. But, she got up a couple hours after delivery(with nurse's approval and agreement) and felt better for it. 2nd kid, she was up right away too.
Personal observations here but the women I’ve known that gave birth naturally all have differently shaped hips after birth in comparison to before. The exception to my perspective is women who’s hips do not change and pretty sure laying in bed or walking has nothing to do with it.
Right?! Had me up to "I've never seen a medical study on it but none of the women in my family have wider hips after having kids." Get outta this thread then, you weren't invited!
Load More Replies...This hormone is relaxin and it hangs around for about 6 months. Let people rest postpartum if they want/need to - their hips will do what their hip were always going to do.
The hormone is called relaxin (someone was dialing it in that day). I can't speak to whether hips stay the same or not. I don't actually think this is the cause for permanent changes but don't have time to go down that particular rabbit hole right now.
Giving birth reclined it's natural. Women traditionally squat. Birthing chairs were the norm (in Europe) for centuries until male doctors started comendering childbirth from midwives.
If you ever feel dehydrated get a pinch of salt put it in your water and add lemon (no sugar) and just drink. It helps.
I wanted to sell a hangover rehydration powder. You need sodium to activate the transportation of water across membranes against concentration gradients.
Yup, sometimes the thirst is in fact not enough minerals. So get some mineral water, broth or bit of salt in your drink and you will be fine again. But, do not overdo it, if you consume too much salt this way you may experience things like fast heartbeat or blurred vision. Everything has to be moderated. (Also, if you have really "clean" water and you have headaches often, maybe you are overhydrated and still thirsty, try some mineral water. Learn from my fail.)
Cold cabbage leaves relieves engorgement and mastitis pain while nursing!
It sounds SO old wives tale but it’s been proved true.
Well, it's cold which can be soothing for inflammation. There are studies that show it helped with not other understanding as to why. There are studies that show it didn't help. The conclusion? The information is too random and it needs to be studied properly.
Engorgement, yes. Mastitis, no. Actual mastitis needs antibiotics. Former lactation consultant here. This whole article is giving me the shits.
I had mastitis once, so bad I ended up going to A&E (not something I do lightly). I tried every trick in the book first, nothing helped, but the most annoying was the cabbage leaves in the bra thing. It clearly wasn't going to do anything and I just felt annoyed that I had to rule it out. What a stupid piece of advice.
So you assumed that it wouldn't work and got angry based on your assumption? Whatever.

Ammonia on a mosquito bite.
Dab a bit of ammonia on it, and don't touch it, count to 120 seconds, and the bite is 'gone' (inflammation etc).
When I first heard of it, I didn't believe it. Now, just a touch of kitchen ammonia and don't scratch and it's beyond gone. Completely.
I was wondering where these old wives were getting ammonia from

And this is why so many people resort to urinating on a cut or bite when stuck in the middle of nowhere. Do NOT urinate on jellyfish stings. I can't remember why, and I'm too tired to look it up.
Letting a baby eat after you will cause them to get cavities. When my sister told us not to let my nephew eat something we've taken a bite out of, I thought she was full of s**t. It turns out adults really can transfer cavity causing bacteria to babies.
I can't see how that transfer is avoidable within a family. You're going to both lick a wooden spoon, sip out of a glass etc at some point, and that's without the kissing.
Within immediate family - sure. With an aunt or family friend, of course you can avoid transfer. Anyone kissing a baby on the lips these days needs to give their heads a wobble.

I'm 46, but one of my favorite memories was after my mom made cake, pies, cookies, etc and she was done with the spoons or beaters on the mixer, my siblings and I would fight over who's turn it was to lick the spoon/beater. It tasted awesome and no, we didn't get sick once.
And to take this further, certain gum diseases can be spread this way. Part of some friends' panic when my ex had his teeth pulled from whatever disease his dentist claimed he had. It was one of Those places though, you know? and he should have gotten a second opinion from somewhere else.
Looking at something too close (like the TV) for too long will strain your eyes.
You need to exercise your long distance focusing muscles to prevent myopia. If you always look at things close up, you can develop it. Studies show that myopia is more often linked with behavior and environment rather than genetics.
I never needed galsses until I truned 40. Older people need reading glasses, in part, because of loss of "accomadation". That is, your eyes lose their ability to bend the lens to focus.
Meanwhile, nobody said anything to me about spending all your time reading, and I am nearsighted
I'm on my PC a lot - TV, movies, articles and stories - so I have a reminder: 20-20-20. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet in the distance for 20 seconds.
This is a myth nowadays with new(ish) TV sets, but in times of early TV in 1950s and 1960s there were some problems with high levels of radiation. Tens of thousands of TVs were recalled for that reason, so there is kernel of truth to that claims, but it was warped ond shaped by the generations...
Yep, I got a computer when I was about ten, before most people had heard of them. Needed glasses at 16
Sometimes it's just genetic, though. I didn't even own a computer until I was around 18, and needed glasses around 2nd grade. Everyone in my immediate family is nearsighted.

Don’t shower during a lightning storm - you might get electrocuted
Earth (electric) line is connected to plumbing, so if electricity comes through your house you may be electrocuted. When there's a thunderstorm, the US National Weather Service recommends seeking a safe location, away from electrical systems, electronic equipment and running water.
In some countries the electrical system and the plumbing legally has to be 'earthed' or grounded. This should prevent electrocution.
“Avoid plumbing: Metal plumbing and the water inside are both very good conductors of electricity. Therefore, do not wash your hands or dishes, take a shower or bath, do laundry, etc. during a thunderstorm.” https://www.weather.gov/iln/lightningsafetyweek#:~:text=Avoid%20plumbing%3A%20Metal%20plumbing%20and,during%20a%20thunderstorm.

It has been shown in experiments that when your feet are cold, it is more likely you can catch a cold because the body is busy sending blood to your extremities to warm them up as opposed to nose/mouth to keep working against viruses. The experiment was done by having half people have their feet in an ice foot bath, other half in warm foot bath.

Menthol helps clear the nose. Soles of your feet and socks may just help keep you warm and help the vicks absorb better
It doesn't actually clear the nose, the sensation of coldness just makes it feel like it's clearer. It can even cause airway constriction. It's no longer recommended for babies and young children. I will still sometimes use menthol lozenges if I have stuffiness to at least change the feeling.

BS. if you're mixing drinks, you are usually drinking more than if you would stick to one kind of alcoholic beverage. Proof : over here they say it in the other direction. Bier na wijn : venijn, wijn na bier : plezier... beer after wine : bad, wine after beer : clear. So, the opposite, switching to heavier alcoholics would mean clearer head;;;
The Dutch version has not so much to do with getting sick or not, in the old days, wine was for people with money, beer was a poor man's drink. so first beer than wine ; means you're moving up in the world. First wine, then beer ; means your losing wealth.

We used to have a just lukewarm bath with vinegar in it when we were sunburt as kids, it definitely helped
Yoghourt for sunburn was used in Greece and Italy for years (particularly as they didn't have sun creams, and used olive oil to 'tan'/fry themselves).
The last one with the sun burn is not true. You can cause yourself more damage by putting yogurt or sour cream on sever burn. Burned skin has damaged its protective function, so you can get nasty infection.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Great fiber vitamins and filling so you eat less
I reckon that the pectin in apples in particular is advantageous. It's a soluble fibre and helps to carry out of the body all sorts of substances that have been taken to the bowel as waste, including unneeded hormones and cholesterol. If they just sit there they can be reabsorbed and cause problems. Our body evolved when we were eating plenty of vegetable matter and relies on it being present to function properly. Brown rice and oat bran are also good sources of soluble fibre.

As a kid, when my dad said it, I thought he was referring to electric energy. It took me an embarrassing long time to realize more people working mean less work overall.
Not only less work for each person, but how much time you spend walking to get something, trying to hold something awkwardly while reaching for something,... I found out that when we work around house (be it garden or building something or anything really), two people working together will do about three times as much work as one person doing it. And will be much less exhausted.

Load More Replies...My mother has a trick for when you have the hiccups, it works EVERY TIME. Chug a tall glass of water while pinching your nose closed to not breath, take many small sips while swallowing, and then just pause after for a moment. Resume breathing normally
Digital rectal stimulation can stop your hiccups. Hiccups are caused by your vagus cranial nerve causing your diaphram to contract. Your vagus ennervates your GI system, from your tongue to your r*ctum (among other things). Rectal massage can disrupt this pathway.
I had brutal hiccups, back in the 80s, on Thanksgiving. I was getting really agitated (which didn't help). We all sat down to dinner and my dad said, "Kristin, the next time you hic, I'll give you $20." I couldn't hiccup to save my life after that! I was so mad! I'd had them for HOURS!!! Geez, dad.
Hold the windpipe firmly with a thumb and forefinger. Works on dogs too. The best one is betting someone 20 quid they can't hiccup another ten times. Never fails.
the method i've used for decades is the only thing that ever worked. my hiccups used to be really painful. i read this i think in an old farmers almanac about 35 years ago. take in a mouth full of water, swallow in three little bits. repeat this three times and hiccups are gone. it has worked every time. every. time.
Just think about something else really intently and they go away...the trick is focusing on something else, which is what you do with the drinking water trick
If someone says they have the hiccups, ask them to PROVE it. Ask yourself that when you have them. Since hiccups are an autonomic response, trying to prove you have them causes them to stop. Has worked for me every single time since I learned about this.
No good deed goes unpunished.
I have a feeling this is a fairly modern quotation. Just googled it and it was first said by Oscar Wilde.
