I would just add, as someone who has done rescue for decades, that it's not a simple matter of "valuing life." The workers at the sending shelter who coordinate placements/transfers for overflow animals or animals that are more adoptable in other regions highly value these animals - so much so that they put in extra work/resources to get them to safety rather than just easily and cheaply euthanizing them.

I like your response as well. There is a large no-kill shelter in my area that takes animals from high kill shelters. Our cats were adopted from there, and I think they were originally born in Indiana, and we live in NY.

Even though most pet owners would never part with their furry friends, in reality, traveling with animals is not as easy as it sounds. But the hassle starts even before traveling. For example, if you’re about to board an international flight, you should make sure that your pet meets the requirements for your destination country and is healthy enough to travel.
On top of that, every airline has different pet travel requirements, so you want to make sure you know them before boarding. Also, it depends on what kind of animal you're traveling with. For example, if you want to take a pet bird or other exotic animal with you out of the US, you may have to contact additional agencies, like USDA APHIS Veterinary Services (VS) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

Fortunately, they genuinely aren't on the job 24/7. Harness off, not working. Good for the dog so that they can be fresh when they do need to work. If they are relaxing with a harness on they are usually trained to take up as little space as possible. Worked in this arena so know from personal experience. Guides dogs are amazing, all service dogs are. All dogs are.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on airlines that allow pets to travel, only small dogs and cats that can fit in special carriers under the seat are allowed in the cabin. It’s critical that their owners take care of them during layovers.
Other airlines may not allow pets in the cabin and will transport them as cargo in specially constructed holds with ventilation and heating. And since for animals, it’s usually better to travel this way since it's darker and quieter, for their owners, it usually means higher transportation charges.

The llamas that were kept on our property were about the size of a 12 hand horse. The stud male being kept at our place now is a little smaller but not by much. They are bigger and more sweet natured than alpacas.

As you can imagine, loading and unloading your pet as cargo can be incredibly stressful to your pet. The CDC encourages pet owners to get their pets used to their carrier before the flight so they feel less anxious.
Other tips from the CDC include purchasing flights with fewer connections and layovers, picking departure and arrival times to avoid extreme heat or cold, and making sure your pet feels safe and calm before and after the flight.

While it's a cute dog, I wish people didn't photograph complete strangers and post it on the internet. I would be horrified if someone did it to me while I was just sleeping on a plane (which is not even a public space in the same way like a street would be)...

I'm curious which airlines allow such large dogs to be in cabin during flights? I've looked into airplane travel with dogs a bit (researching holiday opportunities with my dog) and I haven't seen any airlines allowing dogs that were heavier than 8-10kg (including carrier bag) in cabin :(

Some pet owners may find sedatives and tranquilizers alleviate their pets’ stress during flight, but the International Air Transport Association discourages using such medication since it “could harm animals while in flight.” Whatever you decide, make sure to consult a veterinarian to make sure both you and your pet are ready to have a flight.

A couple of my cats would just chill and enjoy the ride (and attention, of course!), one would try to hide the whole time, and the youngest would be bouncing off the walls and swinging from the chandelier, so to speak—-not from fear but from an overwhelming excess of youthful energy.

I want a Dane so BAD!!!! Love big dogs but i know our 60lbs Aussie is bigger than hubs was expecting to get. We also want to be camper/travelers when we retire so probably not the best breed for camper life, although i have seen a few do it really well! It's not just emotional support. This is a task trained service animal and assists their disabled handler. Some people require bigger animals because they need mobility tasks and dogs can't do it

Well, my mother used to need a couple of stiff gins before she'd get on a plane, so I wouldn't be surprised! Seriously though, some animals need to be mildly sedated for air travel or they'd be too nervous and upset.

I used to live in NYC pretty often, people would just cut leg holes in Ikea bags for their big dogs and walk them on the subway. Dog is in a bag!

We need more people with attitudes like yours. Didn't get same reception with my autistic son's dog. I guess I shouldn't say it like that. 99.9% of people don't mind and enjoy having him there, he's a little shiztu. Problem is it only takes one rotten apple to ruin the whole bunch!

Pup In Training A Transit Pro
My mum volunteers for a charity that trains assistance dogs. We had this good boy staying with us for a few weeks while his regular foster family were on vacation. I decided to take him out on the DART (Dublin metro) one day and after a while he hopped up on the seat beside me like a human. Tried to push him off but only managed to succeed with bribery. Pretty sure it was his first time on this type of transit as his family don’t live near the line but the guy is a total pro!

It's possible the dog is for diabetes or for a deaf person. And it said her first plane ride, so being anxious would be perfectly acceptable regardless of what type of service she's for.

I still have concerns about t dogs breathing, the wind would make it even harder already so I would recommend shielding her a bit. She looks very uncomfortable but I doubt you're the problem.

Pee pads and poo bags. Dogs are often trained as puppies to use these so it's already familiar but they can also be trained as adults to use them. Seal the mess and dirty pads in a bag and take with you when you leave for proper disposal. 😃

I'm probably gonna get alot of negative feedback for this...but come on people lets dial it back on the animal cruelty tone here....this dog probably lives better than most people and flies first class. Is it also cruel that movies use animal actors in them? If they didn't care for the animal they would've shipped it in a crate under the plane. If you actually looked up Bullseye you would find that she's a famous movie dog that works for more that Target, lives on a ranch with her family, and is spoiled rotten....if that's cruel then sign me up

I had a pet rabbit who was a very good traveler. I'd put Jojo in a cardboard box to go to the vet, then open it on the bus so he could look out the window. Not every animal travels well, but he seemed curious and relaxed about what was going on.
