To Portray The Complex Relationship Between Wildlife And Humans, I Make These Surreal Artworks (24 Pics)
My name is Philip Kanwischer, I've been working on “Inhospitably Ours” project for the past 5 years. This work thrives under the assumptions formed by the cursory glance. On the surface, much of my work appears to be wildlife photography of animals interaction with humans as if I have captured the fantastical. I strive to create an eerie atmosphere, begging the questions how did he make the animals do that? and, how could he do that to them? I am interested in habitat loss, environmental ethics, human impact in both urban and natural realms. Working in deliberate realism I plan to reveal our existential trauma.
I graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design with a Bachelors of Design with distinction in photography in 2015. I was also the recipient of the Board of Governors Award for my graduating class. Since then have been pursuing my art and exhibiting Internationally. A pivotal point in my recent art career was when I took part in the Canadian Wilderness Artist’s Residency. This expedition was a month long canoe trip up the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City. This furthered my connection and love for nature and fuelled my practice as relating to environmental impact and remote areas of wilderness.
I have been accepted to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where I am currently in my first year of graduate studies. Often combining photographic and sculptural components to dramatize human impact on the natural environment, my work proposes unlikely narratives in which the genre and methods of wildlife photography are implicated. I often spend days out in the wild, working to build a relationship with the land and its inhabitants, enacting the romantic notion of being able to live side by side with animals and nature.

I wonder if this animal has brainworm - it's a parasite that can cause animals to walk in circles like this over and over.... :(
I feel like this sometimes, going round and round certainly centres me. This is very good , what a lovely colour reindeer
My take is that us humans keep developing and taking more of their land so they've not enough room to live anymore
Taking A Stand
Perched
I could stare at this image for long time and I did. Mesmerizing. Owls are such magnificent creatures.
Tranquil
Nope, sleeping. Young elk, deer and rabbit babes are often left alone by parents. The young have little to no scent but the parents do…so the little ones just chill like this until the milk bar shows up

This is beautifully done, but so sad as well. Your arrangement makes me think how we have compartmentalized nature and wild spaces into National Parks and State Parks. I guess I should be glad we have saved any wild spaces at all.
Used to be there were areas of development between towns snd cities. Now there are islands of nature surrounded by development. Detrimental to all flora and fauna and eventually us
Load More Replies...Wish there was more light and contrast in this. It looks dull sadly. Perhaps that what you wanted.
Holding On
this isn't supposed to be inspiring. yes, it's beautiful and stunning, but it's representing the bond with humans and wildlife and how little freedom animals get.
I mean, it can be whatever you think it is but it's also a visual pun because that bird is a Kite and she's flying like a kite.

Let's Run Away
Nurture
Clutch
Reticent
remind me of a book that I read when i was youger ... there was a nightmare where animals without head or tail were chasing the main charactere .... in french, "avoir ni queue ni tête" (do not have no head or tail) is an expresion to describe something (like a story or a quote) very weird, or without sens
Wow... an animal without a head. I wonder in which direction it moves. May be forward!
On The Other Side
Brilliant, finding tv working and no remote, he must be happy. . Seriously this is a very enjoyable composition.
Oasis
This image is so powerful. Save water, save earth and its species!
What happened here? At first glance it looks like deer suicide but animals don't have that urge.
I find the cold so hard to bear and the thoughts of putting my head in a puddle of icy water has me running for a blanket. Super artwork
Current
I think all bears look sad cos their heads bow down from the neck making him look like he has age related osteoporosis. I see a bear "looking"" with a hungry feel. If he wants to walk on water then who are we to stop him. This is clever
Leader
This has me wishing it was the bears paw leading the deer not a human. Beingf led to the slaughter or to attend a childs petting zoo....who knows
Becloud
Bryozoan - somewhat cloud looking until you get close
Load More Replies...Took me sometime to understand, there is a fox like animal behind a naked person! How did you manage such capture.
I hope its a hot spring as there is water in the foreground. We cant see the goosebumps but they must be there.
Lepus
I think this one is about people putting their trash into the wilderness, which happens quite often. That kills animals, and I believe this is portraying that. Very moving, but sad.
I see the death of one"lapin" in a world filled with millions......i wonder which of the sides we see are represented truly. Im with Hannah below- represents discarding our packaging and every concievable piece of detritus we choose to throw down without thinking. It is a good reminder that death is all around and mostly of our making. If the animals could live and humans could die then the world would be at peace.
Leaving
Are they not beautiful. Their gaggling to one another cannot be heard but they do when they fly. We have small gatherings of geese and ducks that fly clost to home and its wonderful to hear them first before you find out which direction they fly.
Cache
Coldly surreal, is it a bird or a plane you may think.......but i think its a form of camera
Unity
Love the thinking, great ID of life how it should be. The big animals should be picking off the humans who invade their lands. Not much meat on this one though!
Hiding In The Woods
Sciuridae
Falling
Putrescent
Intriguing. I love "Taking a Stand", it's fantastical, humorous, and odd. "Free" is another one that made me pause and think and feel a little sad. Some of the others don't work as well, in my opinion. The final shot "Unity" has some structural and lighting issues that keep me from being able to suspend disbelief, and "Falling" makes me feel a bit angry.
