Stories about toxic mothers-in-law are the stuff of legends. It's a common stereotype that every mother hates her son's wife or girlfriend, and women often return those feelings. In fact, 23.9% of women in the U.S. say they consider their MIL a "frenemy," while 12.9% think of their mothers-in-law as enemies.
You might think that such a label is harsh, but after you read some of the texts in this list, you might understand where the women are coming from. The recent trend on TikTok, where girlfriends and wives expose their toxic MILs for the crazy texts they've sent them, seems familiar to many women. "Sometimes you have to read a text from your MIL and then block her," the participants in the trend write.

"And *I* have heard you're using a washing machine, you lousy excuse of a housewife. Get out to the washboard, shameless Jezebel!"
Milk in bottle. Go milk that cow and churn the butter yourself... But seriously deranged.
Load More Replies...And why isn't the Mob-in-law berating her in person? Using a phone app is LAZY.
But infinitely safer. You cannot get, as my mom used to say, "poked in the nose" over text!
Load More Replies...Those amazingly fresh things bought by hand instead of those stale things delivered....
And I bed that MIL gets her recipe from some books, lazy! smh!
Load More Replies...I also guarantee she works full time , is meal planning , cooking , cleaning all by herself and more if there are children. It also sounds like her husband is complaining about her or how else would the mil learn all of this at the same time .
Let’s be real, though - does she have an MIL problem or a husband problem? Who told her all of this? If it’s the hubs, then she definitely needs to have a come to Jesus meeting with him.
My mother asked my grandmother how to make biscuits ( american, not british biscuits ). Grandmother said "hon, just buy a can of pillsbury".
Because I don’t like the taste of pillsbury and have all the ingredients to make my own. Why spend the money for an inferior product? Does nobody cook anymore?
Load More Replies...How dare you be efficient? ps if it bugs you so much, you no longer get invited for dinner.
"Fantastic. We were just discussing how to ensure that our parents don't feel lonely during the holidays. Sounds like you have a full house!"
Tbh, my mother liked one of my ex boyfriends and they stayed close. Never saw a problem with that, they are adults, if they have a good connection, the better for them. He brought his wife to the visits, isn't that sweet? They always got along well, why should that change because he and I weren't in a relationship any longer?
My and my first husband were friendky with his ex and her second husband. The nen had known each other since childhood. We watched their kids when they got married. You can be adult about it.
Load More Replies...Hey, just letting you know that your son and I won't be there! PS: thanks for the warning.
Poor guy?? The message was to her daughter-in-law.
Load More Replies...Just so you know, you'll never be seeing us again, ever. Have a nice life!
I'm not the best on social cues, but I suspect you're right. I don't want to be mean spirited, but I sense this isn't the most harmonious of relationships.
Load More Replies...Unhinged in-laws are a pretty relevant topic at the moment, since it's the Thanksgiving weekend. For many people, the holidays are a time of heightened stress, and conflicts with in-laws can be a big contributor to that. If you have a mother-in-law who's similar to the ones on this list, you might not feel so thankful this holiday season.
Mental health experts explain that it is crucial to set boundaries if you want to survive the Thanksgiving weekend. The important thing here is that a couple should present as a united front, meaning that if one spouse finds a MIL's behavior inappropriate, the other should back them up.
😂😂😂😂😱😱😱😱😱and we just know one she voted for the orange lunatic , two she’s anti vax n three, thinks the earth is flat n we ll doomed don’t we 😂😂😂
I don't see any of these malicious. Crazy, yes, but not nasty. And calling her fatty was clearly a pregnancy joke
So you think it’s cool to call pregnant women “fatty”? Most of us don’t think it’s okay to call ANYONE “fatty.” You’re okay with fat-shaming and homophobia, so I’m guessing you’re the one who sent these messages. No, Nira; your messages *are* nasty. And gross.
Load More Replies..."You need to advocate for me to my son, because he knows my nonsense already and won't listen". Nonsense like putting responsibility for your actions onto the shoulders of a stressed parent, for example...
"He came out of your p**** 25 years ago. He came in mine this morning."
I think that rant give her full rights to ask you to get back on your meds
I wish she would have said: “he came out of your p***y ONCE, in my case he goes in and out and in and out… multi time a day »
As evident from some of the examples on this list, toxic mothers-in-law like to be backseat grandparents. They think that because it's their son's child, they have a say in how they will be raised and cared for. PopSugar's Laura Lifshitz writes that it's important to let these types of MILs know that you hear their concern, but won't entertain their every whim and comment.
"Just gently say, 'Thank you for caring so much about the kids. It means a lot to me that you care so much, but don't worry. They will be fine,'" Lifshitz recommends saying. However tempting it may seem, it's best to refrain from smirking, rolling your eyes, and using a sarcastic tone. In the end, that will only bring more drama.
I don't really understand this idea that using an app to plan meals isn't real cooking. If you're cooking, you're cooking. I've never used an app, but I get recipes from all sorts of places, including the internet. Does that also not count as cooking?
Recipe books assume you have all the ingredients; apps work with what you do have.
We used to look through cookbooks until we found a recipe we had the ingredients for. Maybe I’m old
Load More Replies...I was in restaurants and the food industry for decades and I can cook many different styles of food. Sometimes I throw my ingredients into an app to seek inspiration. People who "would have never done that" often have boring, uninspired food.
Most 0eopke have a basic repotoire of 10 recipes. I know i get in a rut.
Load More Replies..."Well, mil dear, if you can't believe it, it must not be true. Since you're always right and all."
Out-laws may be of an age and attitude that are very set in their ways. I had a mother-out-law that could not handle most technology. She refused one of those new fangled dishwashers, this was around 1990s. But she was an excellent cook and I always liked her meals. I did get her an electric kettle after she burned herself using the stove to make hot water for tea and she thought that was super. She has passed away and I miss her.
If I’m stuck for something to cook ,cos I wanna do do something different FROM SCRATCH ,I use Tesco meal planner cos I get my food delivered by them , only ones as deliver out here , n before I buy I do a walk around my kitchen list in hand to see if I already have the stuff , ETF IS IT WITH THESE MONSTER IN LAWS not liking meal planners ffs
I think she's talking about a meal plan where they send you the prepped food, but there's nothing wrong with those either
I think they do. Like people who think synthesisers write music.
Load More Replies...Are all these "app" related ones the same person? I can't imagine these are all different MILs saying this.
Looks like they're collected by hashtag on TikTok.
Load More Replies...“I ran your unhinged text through ChatGPT, and it advised me to stay home this Thanksgiving.”
The baby is maybe a year old. What comments highlighted was the phrase “making MY family uncomfortable”. Apparently, MIL doesn’t consider DIL family.
The family should go eat in the bedroom if feeding a baby makes them uncomfortable
Or in the bathroom, which is where many of them believe a baby is supposed to enjoy their meal while mum balances on a toilet. Surely that's good enough "atmosphere" to enjoy their meal.
Load More Replies...Boobies only mean s*x to me because I'm a headcase so stop pulling them out to feed your hungry baby. I also get uncomfortable around cows and other animals with their boobies full of milk.
🙄🙄🙄🙄I’m gonna assume lol dil n sin have a few young kids so dil been feeding a child every yrs or every other get ,either way …get over it mil !,
Upvote to even it out. I understood exactly what you were saying. And MIL can go die in a hole. Babies need to eat.
Load More Replies...I never nursed my kids in front of anybody except my husband. If we were at a family event I either went to my SILAS bedroom, pumped before going or had formula with me.
Wow Beth you poor thing. What caused you to feel so much shame for doing something so natural? 😢
Load More Replies...Even one evening with a toxic mother-in-law can be draining. That's why it's so important to practice self-care before and after, perhaps more intensely than regularly. Experts recommend spending more time with friends, doing activities that help you recharge and relax (be it working out, crocheting, or catching up on your favorite show), taking a moment to ground yourself in the moment, perhaps even meditating or doing some breathing exercises.
Well it's quite funny, unlike most of the other unhinged and downright nasty ones.
I know, it seems as if the MIL was trying to be funny. Maybe there is a negative history here the DIL hasn't shared.
Load More Replies...My husband and I were so giddy about breaking the news that we were expecting our second child. My MIL's reply: "Oh, no."
Probably so. Maybe I've "The Terminator" too many times...

Quit her job and leaving the area? Don’t threaten me with a good time, MIL.
Ok, if you insist, I'll try to find some way to be happy I chased you away. Something will come to me, I'm sure."
Don't let the state line hit 'cha where the good lord split 'cha
Load More Replies...Probably safer for the kids to be happy and safe, than around this lunatic!
Hospitals are fine with only letting people you name into maternity areas.
"No, I didn't ask for a mani-pedi and mascara while I'm trying to squeeze a bowling ball out of where the Brazilian wax don't shine."
Load More Replies...So, MIL is more concerned with her own vanity than seeing her new grandchild.
NO! Don't be doing smelly things in the waiting room where others are a captive audience. Talk about obnoxious behaviour!
Load More Replies...When I was pregnant with my oldest my mother kept flip flopping about being in the room with us. I told my husband she was NOT to be called after the baby was born. She was a 3rd shift nurse at a different hospital (thank God) and had no idea that I went into labor that afternoon. My OB sent me to the hospital after checking to make sure I was in labor. I ended up having an emergency C-section that night & he called her at work because she had already left home. She came waltzing into my room when she got off work the next morning. The only reason she wasn't kicked out by my nurses is because she was in her scrubs. She wouldn't shut up about wanting them to bring him in...I get home 1st because we didn't get to have him very long before they moved me from L&D.
What are your relationships with your mothers-in-law like, Pandas? Have you ever received this sort of message from your unhinged MIL? Let's make the comment section into a group therapy session and share the worst things MILs have said to us. And after, if you're looking for more stories about how people deal with their toxic MILs, check out this one where a man got revenge at his overbearing MIL in the pettiest way possible!
Someone's mad & jealous that her son took me out for breakfast.
If the son is incapable of doing anything without help, and you raised him, then yes, you are stupid. If this is just a tiresome belittling insult for someone enjoying life without a toxic person in it, then yes, you are stupid.
Oh yes! Yes, you are! We can all tell by your grammar and punctuation!
Ohhhhh I would have to show this to the hubby and reply they aren't his kids. Their Daddies are the milkman, mailman and trash mans kids. Me and the hubby would sit back, relax, and laugh at her while she comes completely unhinged! LMAO I have bronchitis right now and laughing us really bad for it.....my head hurts now.
That's bait. If you answer any kind of "Yes", the screenshot gets used to paint you as the Bad Guy.
"MY son and HIS daughters." Don't answer, block and ignore.
Load More Replies...I know. As soon as someone tells me they are Christian, especially when it has nothing to do with the on-going conversation, I start to edge back away, slowly - just in case. Although that hasn't happened since I've moved to France, funny thing. ;-)
Load More Replies...Wow, you can see why they went no contact! A bit on the unhinged side.
*note to self use a hypen to avoid a*****e-censorship. D**n!
Load More Replies...So, if MIL "knows" her son will k**l the wife, isn't MIL also liable?
As many tenses as it takes to express the tension compelling the author to write the harangue. Poorly.
Load More Replies...Who told him he needed to look for proof of "something?" Bet it was MIL.
And MiL apparently also taught him that if his wife displeases him somehow that he should killl her. That’s Mother of the Year material right here!
Load More Replies...Oh, this is a Jewish thing! The naming thing is for both boys and girls, but only boys get a bris because that's the circumcision ceremony. So this one is the MIL saying, oh, it's time for the bris, you ARE doing that, right? She's not bringing it up out of nowhere.
Child mutilation for the sake of religion or cosmetic appearances should be illegal.
No, please don't. Apart from words in a work of fiction, there is no reason to circumcise.
Ffs what’s with those evil religious lunatics and carving babies up ,like why do it it’s a despicable thing to do pfft 🤬reply to that I hope was No,no n hell no !!
You mean the very safe procedure that is proven to reduce the risk of infections, dramatically lower the transmission rates of STIs, and has been shown to actually increase sensation? Yeah who would want that... I bet you think vaccines cause autism too...
Load More Replies...My son's were circumcised in the hospital. This is not butchery, and it's not like, at a Bris, they called a guy off the street to do it.
I had my son circumcised after birth. I don't understand having a party and public viewing for it though. I know this is a tradition in some cultures.
Load More Replies...My babies were circumcised in the hospital by a Urologist the day after they were born. Fast forward 16 or 17 years later and I worked in a Urology office for 6 years. There were several men that came because of problems they had from not being circumcised as a baby and scheduled to have it done.
This. I hope all the uneducated people read this comment. I honestly think they are all just self conscious because they were not circumcised and hate their ugly a*s worms...
Load More Replies...Because it's very likely to be true. Honestly I feel more for the son since it sounds like he has been turned into a momas boy who doesn't know how to handle relationships and rejections. Maybe even having practically no independence skills.
Load More Replies...is it just me or is she saying that "to" COVID not the person she has texted.
I think it's some sort of prayer/magical repellent so that COVID reads that in the phone of the person she texted and goes "ah s**t no i'm not welcome here". She might have it confused with vampires.
Load More Replies...Sure looks like she's talking to a deadly virus. I'm a medical scheduler and am really surprised that there haven't been any babies named Corona or Covid at any of our 47 PCP offices or Pediatrics offices. A couple of us were betting on some parents stupidity with their kids names. There are a couple of names that I hate Nevaeh and Zoe/Zoey.
Especially when they spell Nevaeh incorrectly, they kinda missed the point on that one
Load More Replies...There were some reported incidents of people losing their minds during covid.
And apparently they never found them... it's dated August 31, 2025
Load More Replies...Yeah, mil is just being cheeky...I hope no one blew this out of proportion.
I thought he looked cute, if a little fluffy. Who or what is precious I have questions that need answers.
It's an app for baby pictures. It has cute filters like this - the baby isn't even wearing that outfit. It's just a filter.
Load More Replies...Guess somebody can't take a joke and see how absolutely adorable the little one is.
What? How so? That ones photographer makes millions photographing babies in all manner of settings, like a fairy in the woods, or a bee on a flower, all that, and it disturbs you why?
Load More Replies...I only heard of this "6 and 7" thing a few days ago from another post on here. I'm sure it's annoying, just like any other kidspeak can be but is there actually anything bad behind it?
The kids were doing "up high, down low, too slow." Must be gang signs.
Forget mothers in law. Can somebody tell me about these apps that will cook for me?
Maybe "app" is just short for "appliance" here - oven, microwave, stove, range, etc.
Load More Replies...I could exactly the same thing, leaving off the last two letters (my mother-in-law's name was Joy).
Load More Replies...Had, have I suppose, a pretty odd MIL. She's a JW, but that isn't the worst. She just decided to hate me without saying why. Left her to it. Unfortunately she doesn't even contact her daughter now, and I'm not getting involved.
My MIL is the best. Maybe because she she lives on the other side of the earth, but also because FIL and MIL attended my son´s graduation when my own mother felt too ill to be there. There was nothing really wrong with her. Which was just as well, because she would have spent the whole event telling everyone how sick and handicapped she was.
