These nice-to-have items either stood the test of time, were quirky enough to suit someone’s personality, or were just too funny not to warrant an impulse buy.

Gen Z, in particular, has appeared to embrace thrifting more than any other generation. Goodwill cites several reasons, including that thrift stores offer unique pieces that encourage self-expression.
However, it is also about championing sustainability, which many Gen Z people prioritize. Goodwill notes that 10% of global carbon emissions are estimated to have come from the fashion industry, raising awareness of sustainable living through thrifting.

Reselling has also become a trend among shoppers. According to Rati Levesque, CEO of online luxury marketplace TheRealReal, resale has “gone from disruptor to cornerstone” among consumers.
“The result is a moment in fashion not shaped by brands or trends, but by individuals expressing their personal style,” Levesque told Forbes.

I found a wool topcoat once that was missing a button. It was around the 27th of December and they were going to do a half-price sale on New Year's day so I hid that puppy inside the rack and just hoped. I went back and it was still there, I got it for about $15 and the missing button was in the pocket. Fanciest coat I've ever owned.
I got a brand new loungefly wallet, still had the tags on, for a quarter of the price they normally go for
Load More Replies...I got a Sponge Bob Square pants snow globe with a music box in the base that plays the theme song when wound up. 2$. N ot the most extravagant thing but it makes me happy.
I'm a Gen X'er. I remember grunge the first time around. My flannels all come from thrift stores. Gotta stay authentic even if I look like I refuse to grow up.
Not long ago I found a very big, elegant Italian scarf made of cashmere and silk. Brand new, all the paper tags on, they said 330$. I got it for 5.30$. It's so cozy and warm, I appreciate it especially in the weather that we've had during the last two months in Western Europe. Won't even list all the other items I bought over the years, but usually they don't show a pricetag in USD. This scarf made me very happy.
I very recently went to an antique mall looking for some discontinued Fiestaware and left with two unused/unopened 2025 8-piece Wedgwood Florentine Turquoise dinnerware sets for $250! They clearly didn’t know what they had.

One of my earliest great finds was at our local Salvation Army thrift store. I know good-quality leather, and this one crossbody caught my eye. Coach New York, c. 1970s, for $1.95. Mint. More recently, I found an Eastlake side table with the original finish, in great condition, for $30.
Went to ReStore on a whim and found a lovely secretary in thier last chance section (basically things that have been there for a long time and have been marked down to the lowest price, items get 1 week in that section then are trashed). It was $20 and had 2 days left before being thrown out. It had a lot of cosmetic damage but was handmade and dated to the early 1900s. I took it home and am almost done refinishing it - just needed to sand off all the watermarks (clearly the last owner didnt know how to use a coaster) and the nicks then restained and put a protective oil coat on and replaced the missing backboard and beoken knobs. I even found a key that fits that is the spare for 2 cabinets my mom has as well. I just need 1 more protective coat on 3 drawers and to do the drop down front and fix its hinges and it is back to original condition. Some scented drawer paper and all my table linens will have a lovely new home and I'll have a lovely writing desk.
