The only place I've seen it referred to as "against the rules" or "against protocol" is when Bored Panda posts this bloody photo, which it does every few months. My memory of when it actually happened was no-one gave a stuff, apart from thinking it was lovely she took part with the rest of the mums.

There are several stupid protocols the royals "have" to adhere to, amongst other things there are strict dress rules. It doesn't mean they die when they break the rules, but most of them are there for a reason, like skirt lengths and weighted hems for example: they prevent awkward Marilyn moments for a group of people that is always in the public view. Running is both "less grand" and less safe (someone mentioned the security who can't stay by your side in a race). You have to understand that the public opinion matters to royals, else they wouldn't be there anymore, like they "vanished" in France.

It's both barefooted, and a school event for mums. It's not "professional." Royal protocols are confusing, weird, and yet very deeply held, until someone like Diana (or her children) shakes them up.

It’s against protocol for security reasons. Since she was the Princess of Wales at the time, which made her a future queen consort, future monarch’s wife, and the mother to at least one other future monarch, she would be under strict protection.
