Have you seen Midnight in Paris? The movie is not about the city per se, rather it's about our fascination with it. Woody Allen asks us why the dream of Paris seems more powerful than walking on its streets.
However, it's not just historical European landmarks that infatuate our minds. That cause us to look at the world through an unrealistic lens. No, no, there are many more culprits — we're too easily swayed.
Last week, Redditor u/Buttercuppy44 asked other users, "What's something we need to stop normalizing?" And it turned out to be a discussion we really needed. People straight away came through with plenty of specific and accurate examples.

Having to respect a damaging point of view because it's part of someone's religion.
No, I don't have to respect your belief that women are inferior or that LGTBQ+ people shouldn't have rights because your religion tells you to believe that. It's a bad point of view.
This should be higher up in the list AND it can be extended to every belief in general about 'we' are better then 'them' because of religion/ money/ education/ the place where you live/ the colour of your socks/ etc.etc.
I agree. This should be nr 1. Freedom of religion is important and nobody should say “you can’t be a x”. But the freedom and well-being of others comes first. So yes, you can believe in Jesus but I still have the right to abort. You can believe in Allah but your daughter needs the freedom to not be treated like cattle and be hidden behind a veil. You can believe in abrahamic religions but you have no right to mutilate your sons penis.
Load More Replies...What YOUR religion tells YOU that YOU should believe has nothing to do with ME. YOUR religion will not be telling ME what I have to do. Simple as that.
Why should I tolerate other peoples intolerance? Is a question I like asking people.
all religion is damaging . its caused the world way more problems than its solved
More people have died in the name of a god than any other reason

Three hundred thousand children abused by French priests under the complicit watchful eye of the catholic church. It was known at every level of the hierarchy, all the way to the top (several popes) who orchestrated the cover up, often moving offenders to other areas where they would still be able to harm children
Load More Replies...Patton Oswalt in response to “You’ve gotta respect everyone’s beliefs." : No, you don’t. That’s what gets us in trouble. Look, you have to acknowledge everyone’s beliefs, and then you have to reserve the right to go: "That is f*ing stupid. Are you kidding me?" I acknowledge that you believe that, that’s great, but I’m not going to respect it.
Hmmm I agree and disagree. Yeas, you do not have to respect bulls**t of any form, be it religion or not. But I think people have a right to believe in any god they want and if that means that they cannot eat pork, have to live koscher or to pray 4 times a day in a certain direction.... you should respect that. Those little peculiarities of any religion are "home" to many people. Their traditions, their anchor in the world. It is no harm to respect these.

Why are men still allowed to marry children in some countries? And the rest of the world just sits back and accepts it?
And, vice versa. No one has to respect your beliefs. As long as they don't hurt someone (and I'm not talking about feelings, snowflakes), they should be tolerated.
Once belonged to such a religion where being gay was wrong, my family still tries to indoctrinate me, thank baby jesus I grew up and started thinking for myself
So much this. "Because my imaginary friend said so" is not an acceptable excuse for bigotry.
It's not even what "your religion tells you to believe ", it's more "what your interpretation of your religion, based off a few cherry picked passages from your holy book twisted to fit your pre-concieved bigotry, tells you to believe".
Yeah, stop using religion as a shield instead of an inspiration. How come people don't use religion as an excuse to house the homeless, heal the sick, love thy neighbor instead of forcing your opinion on weddings and abortion on people WHO ARE NOT YOU?
With all our faults, we are definitely called to care and love our neighbors, feed the homeless, start hospitals all over the world to heal the sick, take care of the orphan and widow and so much more.

Okay, so you hold some random belief that has been passed down from generation to generation for no other reason than tradition. Whoopdee-doo, good for you. But you expect me to treat it like it's something sacred? Haha, no.
Love says no. Love has a variety of definitions so what one thinks 'that's love' others do not.
Im sorry but what dumbass said that women are inferior in islam, why are you assuming based on some stupid s**t you heard on ur bbc news one morning. instead of making a religion look bad maybe do your research before you throw some accusations out
Women are inferior in all abrahamic religions (and most of the others) because the societies who created them were profoundly misogynistic. It is not something that should be tolerated in any of the religions not only islam

Likewise, we shouldn't VOTE on granting someone else the same rights everyone else gets (e.g. gay marriage). They should be just granted! Don't pat yourselves on the back for voting for gay marriage. Be ashamed that it was held to a vote in the first place.
To be fair the people who voted for it aren’t in fault for it not being allowed before
Load More Replies...I have been thinking about the word respect. Would the lack of respect be the same as not allowing a belief? I guess everyone has the right to an opinion but not everyone has the right to be heard. Take racism, we can all agree that racism is bad. In the US KKK members can post their opinions on the internet, have racist gatherings, and vote racistly. I don't respect their conviction or opinion but I do respect their freedom to have that opinion. Sure I would try in my way to teach them a better way but mostly I would be OK with agreeing to disagree. What do you think?
But, why should the religious person have to respect your belief that someone can dress and style their hair differently, and it changes their gender? Your statement works both ways.
They don't have to respect it, but they shouldn't stop you either. That is the problem. Lawmakers making laws based on religion that deny others their freedom. No one said it couldn't go both ways. You can start complaining when people try to outlaw religion like religious people try to outlaw others.
Load More Replies...Religion is vague, so people have to interpret. Some people take tge wrong things out of it, just because it fits them more
LGBTQ propaganda and forcing this group's unscientific beliefs onto the society, especially on children: that needs to stop!
this goes for any belief system. if it dictates that you should treat someone lesser based on things like race, gender, sexuality, and other things it is bad. for example the KKK isn't a religion but is still not okie dokie.
lol if I *have* to do anything as decided by someone else, then they *have* to abide by the things I make up for them on the spot.
I have no respect for anyone attempting to drag me into their delusion. You wanna judge people because you worship a supernatural deity, then I'm gonna judge you harshly.
People now a days they don't know what happened in Sodom & Gommorah.. God destroyed that city it is because of homosexuality and etc.
"Having to respect a damaging point of view because it's part of someone's religion." This cuts both ways. Think about how much "stuff" society as a whole is expected to tolerate because it's "normal" behaviour elsewhere? Women as second class citizens with their faces hidden, comes to mind...
They have a right to their opinion just as you do. You don't have to respect the opinion, but you should respect their right to have it.
One good result of the British Raj (rule in colonial India) was the end of suttee--forced suicides of widows, who were forced to throw themselves on the funeral pyres of their dead husbands. One story, surely apocryphal, is that the general in charge of a district was told by the local elders (all men, of course) that it was part of their culture to burn widows. He told them it was part of HIS culture to hang men who burnt widows. When he erected a gallows beside the burning ghats, suttee stopped. In any event, the practice was finally ended You are free to call this cultural imperialism if you taken consultation with the widows. Similarly, foot-binding, a cruel Chinese practice thought to make women more attractive by crippling them, was ended larely due to the efforts of Christian missionaries.
Religion is the worst excuse for anything. People always just cherry pick the rules they want, then act like the rest of the world should bend over backward to accommodate their self centered bs.
Absolutely and it shouldn't be backed up by laws that allow that as an excuse for not providing health care to employees or discriminate customers.
I am for the freedom of everyone to do as they please without being persecuted but I must point how hard this subject is. Everyones comments on how people should be accepted and then put rules on how they are treated is fundamentally hypocritical because what if someone is a true Bigot or racist? In their world they are right and being told how treat someone or how to think is exactly what they wanted to do against others. We are in a sense doing and saying exactly what they are but we feel we are in the right so it's the correct answer....same as them. People who are against these marginal groups and say their way of thinking is wrong is them same as us saying those bigots and racists are wrong and their thinking is wrong...tricky.
What defines a bad point of view though? If we’re going here we might as well go all in. Do I have to respect your view that, say, lying is completely okay even though I think it’s a bad view? By your logic, no. But I do anyway, because I’m trying to be a decent human.
If respect is given, respect is earned. I'll respect your position and point of view if your can respect mine.
It's not the religion that has caused the problems, it's the people practicing it. They are the real problem. Religion can be interpreted to harm someone or help someone. Time to get the right perspective.
Yes... but its not a bad point of view... bad means of poor quality... its evil, meaning profounding immoral....the important distinction being that the more people that recognise religion as not bad or having different different views etc.... but actually evil - which is what they are - the closer we will get to having a better society.
Religions are outdated fossils and we’d all be better off without them.
Honestly, just getting rid of religion would solve a LOT of problems and make the world a better place. People tend to behave better when they're held accountable for their actions and don't have religion to hide behind.
Do you think that people actively choose to believe the things that they believe? If no or maybe how would you abolish religion?

The respectful thing to do towards religions would even be to rid them for good of all the bigot, superstitious, toxic content which generally has nothing to do with the actual faith they refer to.
So basically no religion then. Sounds good to me.

That anything is possible if you try hard enough. Don't get me wrong, a lot is possible, but not everything. There are factors beyond ourselves that determine our success. The best we can do is to give our best, and be happy that we've done so.
Hardwork doesn't always lead to success. A lot of people that became successful through "hard work" don't usually include one thing in their success stories: the role of luck. Some of them were lucky to be born in the right place, to the right people, at the right time, happened to go to the right school, happened to make the right friends, etc. For every success story, there are thousands and millions that did the same amount of hardwork and got nowhere. The difference is, those hardworking but unsuccessful people were simply unlucky. No one knows a sure formula for success in life. It's easy to think you do when you've made it.

Looking at you Jeff, Bill, and Mark
I'm going to get downvotes here, but you need to swap out Bill for Richard. Yes, Mr Gates has done some deplorable things while gaining his millions. But he has done philanthropic things that the others haven't even considered. Demonstrably tried to improve things for the rest of humanity. The others? No bathroom breaks and trains that barely run at all never mind on time. Oh, and I'm damn sure it wasn't his age that stopped him taking part in the Prick Space Race, so that's a point in his favour too. Dislike or full on loathe him all you want, but he is no longer in the same league of greed and evil as the others. (Mr Zuckerberg is in a league of his own, although he does look like he wants to be Bezos when he grows up, so...)
The idea that being an as*hole is a sign of intelligence. Jerks are rarely intelligent. Sheldon Cooper, Rick Sanchez, Hannibal Lecter, and Dr. House do not exist.
In my experience, being rude and condescending turns out to be a sign of stupidity, not intelligence.
Sheldon was actually very true to life for a lot of smart autistic people..but he would be what we would be without adapting skills. And most of us have adapted to our environment.. But he feels rather authentic. He isn't rude or condescending - he just doesn't understand most humans. That's why he follows the rules.. hot beverages for upset humans etc.

The idea that a woman can slap a man if she's angry at him, but a man should never hit a woman regardless of the circumstances.
The former is assault - hitting people who aren't already involved in a physical altercation is never OK, regardless of the circumstances. The latter ties into that; if you are being attacked, the level of force you use in defence should be dependent on the danger you are in, which has almost nothing to do with the sex of your attacker.
Both of these rely on the tired and sexist trope that women are meek little does who have not the physical strength nor moral turpitude to commit violence against the big, strong, tough men. They normalize assault and abuse and accordingly belong in the dustbin of history.
Finally someone who adresses this! This double standard bothers me fir a long time. Also, some women who try to be "feminists" still keep this in check. If you want equal rights for men and women, that includes the downsides too
Bullying. It's absurd how society will frame it as a "stage of your life" rather than supporting individuals more so they know how to deal with it. Especially academically, still overlooked majorly.

Unhealthy weight. I’m not talking about being fit and thin and making people feel bad about their bodies. Im not talking about having a few extra pounds and making people feel bad for that. I have a few extra pounds, I’m not super fit, but I’m relatively healthy. Everyone’s body is different. Healthy means a lot of different things.
I’m talking about normalizing morbidly obese people as beautiful and something to be celebrated. It’s dangerous especially if children see them as someone to look up to. Then they’ll think it’s ok for your body to carry around so much weight that your heart and lungs are working overtime to keep you alive. It will lead to devastating later years in life as you age and your body slows down. You’ll be at risk for cardiovascular issues, you’ll probably die before your time, and the last few years of your life will be bed ridden while you waste away.
While I agree that there is such a thing as unhealthy weight, you still won't see me attacking the "body positivity movement". Because for people to change for the better, the first step has to be letting go of the self-hatred and shame that plagues the seriously overweight and drives them into a self-destructive spiral of self-harming and self-comforting behavior. If the body positivity movement helps anyone let go of the guilt and self-hatred that's poisoned their lives then more good than harm has been done, and it's not like body negativity ever did anyone any good. You can't shame people into being thinner or healthier, that's not how humans work.

Oooo like at this dark and brooding handsome guy with no personality. Time to f him and forget about my 2 year relationship, or some s*** like that. It's not romantic, it's just wrong, and it should not be normalised.
It's all a little more complicated, some people seem to think cheating is about as bad as it can get. But that being said, romance movies are actually the most messed up when you think about it

Toxic positivity. There’s a huge difference between being optimistic and having raised colored glasses on. We’re all people, and we all experience negative and positive emotions. The only way you can properly get over your emotions is by allowing yourself to feel them. Glossing over your emotions with an aura of “Everything’s fine” isn’t going to solve anything, and it’s just gonna make you feel bad.

I don't hate police in general, but I've had my arm and nearly my skull broken during the 2001 Genoa protests (unprovoked attack on peaceful protesters) and I was in the Diaz school raid (but luckily wasn't hurt as I was hiding in a closet). Sooo... there's good apples and bad apples... but the bad apples do a lot of damage as they are put in a position of power.
Students overwhelmed by homework when it isn’t necessary. I’m excluding situations like when the workloads from classes are reasonable and happen to pile on one day or students who aren’t organized, etc. This whole thing is a grey area, but sleep, burnout, mental health exists.
A little coordination between teachers could solve this problem. I can remember the times where we had to do an assignment for English and an hour later our French teacher came up with a similar time consuming assignment. When we explained that that meant we had to choose which one we could do, he postponed the assignment for 2 weeks. But other teachers just said "Deal with it." It's education, teacher, we're not operating a multibillion dollar business with deadlines and targets here.
Not caring about education. So many people obviously didn't pay attention in elementary school and don't care about it.
Over here, the government doesn't see education as a "top priority" while I think it's one of THE most important things

Defining your personality by your illnesses/disabilities - both physical and mental. It's wonderful to educate the world and promote acceptance, but when it starts becoming the crutch you lean on to defend toxic behavior, it's a problem. I'm sick of depression and anxiety and chronic illness being treated as a "quirky personality trait" rather than real, life-altering issues. It makes people minimize your experience and think you're just exaggerating because "x tiktok star manages so why can't you?". Idk, man, maybe it's because these kinds of conditions manifest differently in each person, or *le gasp* social media isn't real. As a bonus: giving your two-cents on someone's health when you have no business doing so. I'll listen to my doctors, not your sudden need to plug health fads.
Totally agree. As a bipolar and clinical depression sufferer who was diagnosed about 30 years ago and heavily medicated since, the current 'trend' of people self-diagnosing these conditions drives me nuts. If people had actually experienced any serious mental health condition, believe me, they would go out of their way to NOT have these conditions! In my case, it's been a very long battle involving heaps of medication, psychiatrists, being locked in the loony bin a couple of times etc., that has been extremely difficult at times. More times than I can count, actually. Mental illness is not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not something you should wish on yourself. Life is hard enough!

Being mean to substitute teachers. When i walked in my French class the other day I had a sub and it was my two friends in that class who were acting out the most. One was holding his desk above his head, and the other flat out refused to do her work, saying she didn’t do her work anyway and would rather read Warriors (Wings of Fire is better honestly). The kids in front of me were playing video games, and ended up not getting their work done. And really just middle schoolers in general are terrible. There’s this one jerk on the bus who threatens people with his drumsticks, jumps on the seats when the bus is moving, and throws trash out the window. I confronted him about this, and the next day he tried to run me over on his bike. Fortunately though, he went to my neighbors house where they were playing football and he got hit right in crotch. He deserved it.

This seems to me to be a LOT of people complaining about other people who have different values. Maybe people her should stop and think about what others may think of them, Maybe Bored Panda should start of thread of what people LIKE about other people!
This whole topic is so whiny and gross. “Normal” for some is not normal for all. If you don’t like it, get over it and get on with your own business. If it’s something blatantly illegal, then if you see something, say something. Take some f-ing personal responsibility.
I think AITA-threads should stop. A onesided view, at best with honest intentions, usually only asking when they sure are NTA or totally out of their minds anyway, and a lot more than TA in the case in question - compared to the issues many people display there, the subject of these threads usually isn't even worth mentioning. Nothing is to gain out of that, but reassurance of the cheapest kind - either in people agreeing with one, or in people, generally being soooo bad that they even disagree. Worthless waste of time, every single one I read.
The wokeness and cancel culture and political correctness is getting out of hand and very confusing and subjects individuals to attack and abuse for having a different perspective. Also these tiktok trends that harm people!!! And the female body being the property of politics, that's disgusting.

YES! People who put clothes on animals, for any other reason than a coat for warmth, should take a bloody good look at themselves. Animals don't NEED to wear clothes, don't WANT to wear clothes and, certainly, don't WANT to participate in and cutesie wootsie games you're playing with them! Animals are our companions, not our props!!!
Load More Replies...I’m probably going to get downvoted for this, but using being LGBTQIA+ as an excuse for mental health issues. I’ve seen multiple people online with “head mates” which is really just having split personalities. That is, in my experience, is usually a sign of mental illness. Get help!
I don't understand what you're saying. Are you saying LGBTQ have split personalities? I'm trying to get what you're saying. Can you elaborate more please?

Load More Replies...Funny that I can't read: "Being Anti-vaxx is fine, they just have another point of view that should be respected"
There's a lot missing from this list: driving home drunk or even tipsy, hypocritical behavior, social media influencers, idolizing celebrities, the pharmaceutical business and the opioid issue, racism, ruining our planet.....soooo many things that we've become blind to.
Bullying intelligent people calling them nerds! We should praise them, not belittle them!
Criticizing things people can't change like their height, or their nose, or in the case of men, the size of their penis. Only one of these things have corrective surgery and it's far too costly for most people.
Unfair divorce decisions. Always should be 50:50 for everything, not what some wizened half senile fart if a judge thinks is fair. Giving the none working partner everything apart from the last 20% of the working partner's superannuation is not about fairness, it's vindictive and cruel.
Doing really toxic things and then brushing it off by saying some s**t about your zodiac sign. Stars and birthdays don’t give you permission to be a bitch
Some of these are oversimplifying some very complex concepts, or swinging the pendulum a little too far in the other direction 😕
I am getting really sick of all these "phobias" that are suddenly around. Just because some isn't attracted to you doesn't mean they hate you or what you represent. Grow up. If you can't, then you need a therapist.
Uh, phobias don´t just suddenly show up. They only show up after a traumatic event. As a person with a phobia, I can tell you it´s a legitimate mental disorder and it should be treated as such

Influencers, celebrities, professional athletes, the 1 percent and the kardaushebans wouldn't matter if people focused on more important things!! Unfortunately it's easy to get lost in the posts and not focus on your own life!! Unfortunately the uneducated is breeding faster then the people who are caring, intelligent, respectful and would actually enforce change. The negative attributes handed down these days is only getting worse!! The internet makes us notice everything but that's a good and bad thing!! In make us notice that certain people shouldn't have major focus on them but at the same time everyone wants to focus on them because it's m"entertaining"
Subscriptions! Why is everything a subscription now? There are a lot of programs I would buy if they were purchases. But no one can afford twenty $30 subscriptions a month.
FACTORY FARMING. Torturing, slaughtering for profit and supporting corporations that do so for your gluttony is NOT YOUR RIGHT.
Promoting LGBTQ nonsence and unscientific beliefs + forcing them onto the socienty, especially children: that needs to stop. just stop with the propaganda already.
It's been out of hand for thirty years or more. It'll burn itself out eventually, but until then, the "wokesters" will continue to be annoying as hell.
Load More Replies...Fireworks are another one. They're toxic to produce, encourage global climate change, torture dogs and many veterans with combat related ptsd... But, you know, they're pretty, so why not light them off every time someone gets married, has a birthday, graduates, scores a goal, or has too much to drink...
How about shaming those who don't give a s**t about holidays or who have different holidays. I hate Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. I'm not Christian and have zero family worth spending time with. But I still get s**t for not celebrating and I still lose days of work (and pay) because companies close. But if I want to take time off for Beltane or Samhain (holidays that she very important to me) I'm given s**t for making things up and letting my colleagues down. Seriously?
