You know how you enter the store to get some milk, only to see the shelf full of pinot grigio right in the way, staring at you with no place to hide? This moment of pure impromptu is basically the essence of the “decisions were made here” meme that shows the lonely product (one intended to buy) standing in the midst of the indulgence section, whether it’s beer or ice cream.
But no matter how funny it may be in the joke format, the reality is a tiny bit different. It turns out, it’s one of the most annoying things customers do while shopping, according to supermarket employees—not even mentioning taking a thing out of its package and leaving it lying out somewhere.
Below is the list of seriously annoying stuff we should all quit immediately if we ever want good shopping karma.

When People Stop In The Middle Of An Aisle And Act Like They're The Only Ones In The Store
This really annoys me, especially when you say excuse me and they act like you are the one being rude interrupting their conversation.
I get so passive aggressive in these situations. I usually just stand there and stare at them until they notice me. Then they always look at me like I'm a complete weirdo, but I like to believe that it gets the point across a bit better.
I say, a bit loudly, "Excuse me!" Keep it polite, but make it obvious they need to MOVE IT.

Hey I know! How about you both stand on the same side of the aisle and have this conversation?
hhhhhh my mom does this,, i just stand there awkwardly and it's the worst thing ever
Face the other direction and take an intense interest in whatever’s right in front of you.
Load More Replies...I usually get this when I get off the escalator, going up or down. Are people this oblivious to their surroundings?
I hate when my friends try to do this to me. There's always a café either in store or nearby and I say "Are getting anything that can't keep for too long? Nope? Meet me in the café and I will buy us both a drink and we can chat" A nice coffee and comfy seat out of everyones way to relax and chat and catch up for a bit. Nice
Maybe bring a bell to the supermarket for cases like this. A big bell might be too much and ring when it is not necessary. But like a bell that goes on a bike for example. I often get overlooked because I am in a wheelchair, so I am at a lower level that most people. But I don't care, I ask if they can move and if they don't hear me, I tap them on the shoulder (if I can reach their shoulder, otherwise on their back). Always does the trick. At least until now, lol. But I don't know how people in other countries (many people from the USA over here I guess, though many other nationalities too) react to that.
I don't have a bell but I do have a gag-gift button that makes farting noise. It works to get people out of my way.

I imagine the parents are the ones leaving onions in the DVD aisle and stuffing their trash into the carts...

My first job was at target and to this day I refold shirts and zone in every store I go to. My husband has to tell me to stop. It’s just automatic for me.
Load More Replies...Too bad corporate management is so stingy they don’t want to pay for cameras set up in the toy aisle, plus attendants stationed there (and only there), who could nip a lot of this in the bud. They would not be babysitters, they would be security, and take the guilty kids to a holding area while they page the parents to come get them. BUT I’d like for the parents of such destructive children to have to pay for each and every toy their kid unwraps and plays with and/or destroys—-but not get to keep them, as that would teach the kids it’s OK to destroy toys they don’t own. Destroyed toys would be tossed in the garbage with the kids and parents watching, and toys in decent shape given to charity. Hitting them in the pocketbook just might make the parents keep their kids with them as they shop instead of parking them in the toy section.
I worked in the kids' dep't at a Macy's about ten years ago, and adults would allow their kid(s) to wander loose and run around. WATCH YOUR KID, PEOPLE! There are many hard objects with corners and sharp edges in the kids' clothing department and THE EMPLOYEES ARE NOT HERE TO BABYSIT YOUR KIDS! Adults would get upset with us for not keeping track of their short people, and I *really* wanted to tell them, "Macy's employees are not here to watch your kids. You are responsible for them. If you want me to babysit your kids when you shop, you need to make arrangements with me in advance and it's $10/hr."
only $10Hr.? WOW, i bet ya get plenty of business where ya live if ya charge that little, wow....LOL

Back in the 1950s and '60s, the vibe at supermarkets was totally different. According to author Blake Morgan, “brands treated customers like they didn’t have brain cells and used loud and obnoxious voices and obviously exaggerated print.”
It all changed with Ogilvy, the father of advertising who said that you gotta treat customers like you treat your family members. Because, essentially, they’re potential clients.
Then, the now-famous phrase “the customer is always right” was pioneered by successful retailers named Harry Gordon Selfridge, John Wanamaker, and Marshall Field. This approach stuck with us for many years to come, and it’s still in use today. But critics claim it doesn’t work in the current times.

Load More Replies...I'm genuinely asking : isn't 20 bucks an hour a lot for a cashier position ? In France we have a minimum wage at around 8 euros an hour so 1219 euros per month (35 hours a week) and a lot of jobs such as cashier are paid at that rate. I know cost of living is different everywhere but 20 seems like a lot to me.
It depends what state you live in. $20/hr doesn't go far in NYC, but it does in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It's important to remember that in the U.S., cashiers right now tend to be adults, without company healthcare, working less than 40 hours per week, during a pandemic. Here's a good article about purchasing power (and minimum wage) in the U.S.: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/01/04/5-facts-about-the-minimum-wage/

Even though other shops in our town had provided some to their staff. I was thinking of making them masks and doing something to try and help them out. But they finally put up plexiglass and gave them face shields. Because of the pandemic, retail staff have been thrust into the spotlight and they should be given proper wages to show our appreciation for them! They were having to work at first with no PPE, no protection, nothing! And having to deal with hordes of customers panic buying like it was an apocalypse!
My mom has worked at Burger King 17 years and just now makes $20, it takes time, you'll get there.
Some people don't have time to wait years for a living wage.
Load More Replies...Hahahahahahaha! What a bunch if BS. I'm a firefighter and don't make $20/hour. We work 24-hour shifts (sometimes72 hours on, 24 off and 72 hours on), take care of very sick patients in unfathomable situations, and put out fires. I've always said, "If you can't shoot it or arrest it, call the fire department." I love my job. Hearing someone who stands in a climate controlled environment bitch about how they want $20/hour is absurd.
Even at $20/hr you can't afford decent healthcare coverage especially if you have a family. High deductible plans have taken over and crippled access to decent healthcare even more. If the government won't raise the minimum wage, at least give these folks affordable healthcare.
"Retail Workers Know What I Mean"
"Are you sure you don't have one out back?" "Yes, we keep a few back so we don't sell them b/c we're in the business of not selling stuff."
I worked counting products with RGIS for a while. Long time ago. Counted everything from dollar General to best buy. Dollar general and dollar tree had tons of stuff in back. The Disney store in the Huntsville mall had tons off stuff in back ( I specifically remember this after 17 years because I accidentally dropped a mickey mouse snow globe and it shattered).

In the times of consumerism, customers are no longer the perfect beings worthy of praise. According to the author Alexander Kjerulf, sticking to the “customer is always right” mantra has multiple adverse effects.
It makes employees unhappy, it gives abrasive customers an unfair advantage, it results in worse customer service, and it ignores the fact that some customers are just plain wrong.
Even if being customer-centric is part of the customer experience, that doesn’t mean brands and companies have to follow it blindly. They should rather seek a smart balance in making both customers and their workers equally happy.
"Working In Retail Is A Special Type Of Hell"
When I was a kid, customers had to pay for stuff they dropped and destoyed. Doesn't seem a thing anymore.
If it's unintentional in France they have insurances. When i was a toddler i leaned on a great ceramic dog at a decoration store and "killed" it. I cried but the store owner didn't, since his insurance would cover my mistake. RIP grayhound.
Load More Replies...If you break something in a store, the appropriate thing to do is pay for it.
OMG this is kinda funny but really rude because you cant just do that buy it and do it at home
This Is Accurate
Many years ago I worked in a popular fried chicken restaurant here in the States. We closed at 11PM, which is super late for any restaurant. Inevitably, I would have some schmuck knocking on the locked door and exclaiming, "What, you're closed ALREADY?" Sir, it's almost midnight. Take your drunk ass to the Waffle House.
God yes. The door is locked, the sign says closed, but there's a light on, so rattle the door and tap on the glass, cos you must be open really.
The amount of times we've argued with customers over what time we close just because your watch doesn't say 8pm doesn't mean we can't shut.
This is my favorite. I tell everyone how true it is. SpongeBob working is pretty true to life in a restaurant.
Customers Who Don't Say Hi
I always say Hi and I'm very cheerful about it because I feel like they have taken the time to be nice
And I always say "hi" back and ask how they are doing. Don't make generalizations.
Load More Replies...Truly happy employees don’t need to be reminded to smile and greet customers. Why management is so obtuse about that can only be explained by pure greed and callous disregard for frontline employees—-who are the real people who can make or break your business—-NOT YOU, HOTSHOT!—-so the ones who do a good job of it should be treated like gold.
I always say hi if an associate at a store says hi.. One thing that bothers me is , for example, firehouse subs. When anyone walks in all the employees holler "welcome to firehouse subs!!!" And everyone in the whole store looks at you. I hate it. Makes me nervous just thinking about it.
That is because they are instructed to do so by management. Trust me been there done that on the other side of the counter, most of us would never do it if now required to do so. You should complain to management about it but make it so it doesn't fall on employees.
Load More Replies...I always say hi to anyone that says hi to me, if they don't say hi to me, I ignore them, I'm just not the people type.
This I find WHINY. If your job is customer service, do your job regardless of what caliber of customers you encounter. Some people are just distracted. You're getting paid to be friendly, they aren't.
When I worked at Macy's, there was a meeting I had to go to about some new approach to selling or something, and, apparently, they were planning to roll it out worldwide. I'd been to the UK a few years before and had friends in the UK and, knowing how well the 'approach customers to see if they need help/how they're doing' way of things would go over--like a giant lead balloon--I mentioned that shop people in the UK do things differently than in the US, and UK customers wouldn't take well to the US approach (the manager running the meeting had asked/said something about things to keep in mind about different places, or something about that, and left it open to people in the room to contribute). The manager running it tells me that they've actually been having success in the UK with the new policy. I was surprised/taken aback, knowing what I knew, but didn't say anything. Maybe things had changed? Realized later she was full of s**t.
It's the height of rudeness to deliberately not say hi when someone greets you. It bothers me when I see people working in customer service being completely ignored by the customers.
Yes, and they've also usually been instructed with specific things to say to manipulate you into spending money.

When They Act Like Masks Don't Apply To Them
I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and I saw ONE family not wearing masks. I'm pretty sure the dude looked just like this. The woman had her stupid head held high DARING people to stare at her. I did. And whispered loudly to my son "don't be like THOSE people". I really hate being like that but damn.
Good for you, Becca!! It's great people like you who have the courage to stand up and call out the losers who don't GAF about their fellow citizens, OR their children! Those covidiots are putting everyone at risk, even babies!!

We have a booth selling rocks, gems and minerals, and at the last show a woman came up without a mask, even though all the entrances notified customers that they are required. She came up with several items to buy, and my husband asked her to put on a mask. She dumped all the items on the table, said, "F*** you" and stalked off. I'm actually glad we didn't sell anything to her.
I don't get this one. It's definitely not accurate. I wear my shades on my hat like that, I wear a mask in the store. I've seen people from all walks of life not wearing a mask.
No. Absolutely not. No. No no no no. My mom wears a hat like that and puts her sunglasses like that and she gets so upset when she sees someone not wearing a mask. I can’t even think about her being someone like that. Edit: sorry, I was angry when I posted this, it kinda just ignited me, can anyone tell me how to delete a post?

Let’s all hope the prison sentence is as short as possible. But I think the minimum is 30 years for murder. 😟
I hate this, it's part of my job to do this! It's terrible, even the higher up employees do it!
Must be nice to be so entitled that you feel no shame for this whatsoever. I'd LOVE to go to their home and trash it, then shrug and go 'you live here, so you clean it, that's your job!' I used to work in a really upscale store and people would throw $1000+ outfits on the floor and leave them in piles. One day, I was like "Seriously?! Do you do this in your own home?!" To which a co-worker pointed out, "Actually yes, because they probably have staff cleaning up after them." Touche.
When Customers Leave Stuff From Other Aisles In Places They Shouldn't Be
You don't have to work in a supermarket to hate this...I feel for you all.
ESPECIALLY cold stuff like meat and icecream. It is an absolute waste, the shops can’t sell those things anymore.
That's a Target store.... and sadly enough I can confirm this happens constantly. Not just with grocery stuff(saw a half eaten banana in one of our book aisles once) but I've seen Quarter Pounder boxes, Mcmuffin wrappers, cheeseburger wrappers, Starbucks cups, and stuff from the cafe(RIP the cafe btw). It's infuriating. Especially since we have to clean it up because others couldn't be arsed to walk the 5 steps to a garbage can. Yeah, they've been that close.
IKR whenever I go to the toy isle literally everything is misplace and garbage is sitting around
Load More Replies...Why? Especially when they dump something frozen in a non-frozen section or vice versa.
I do work in a supermarket and sometimes I think a policy should be in place that if a customer is caught putting an item they don't want in another aisle, they should be made to go through every aisle, find any misplaced items and then put them on the right shelf.
"I Think We All Can Relate. Am I Right?"
One of the things I really like about Germany. A simple „NEXT“ is common and completely sufficient.
I thought it was common everywhere to either say NEXT or NEXT PLEASE.
Load More Replies...I worked a hot food counter at a large gas station/motel on a tourist trail. People couldnt/wouldnt queue like humans and would just crowd around like zombies. I had no hope of knowing who was next and got snapped at by customers who thought they were next i came up with my own system. After serving a customer i would close my eyes and loudly say "NEXT". Whoever spoke first would get served next. A lot of people didnt like it but management had my back because we were in the outback and our nearest competition was 250km away. Lets just say in the desert the customer is rarely right.
I did this the other day yelled can I help anyone turned around and I had a customer staring at me I was like whoops I'm so sorry 😆
😂 I cannot stop laughing because I’m the person they have to yell at to get my attention lol
I worked at a large fabric chain store, and during the holidays it was insane. The problem when you said next, was people ran to get to your register, cutting in front of the person that was actually next. I would go over directly to the person waiting and direct them to my register.
When They Tell Employees Their Whole Life Story
Yup, I have heard about a women having a colonoscopy, a woman being a prostitute and that the fella with her was her pimp and bf, a guy with a big bandage telling me about his infection that was literally oozing pus etc. Some things we just don’t need or want to know.
It's just the opposite for me. I guess I have one of those faces that says, "please vent to me." Me - Good morning! Cashier - Good morning, will that be all? Me - Yep, that'll do it. Cashier - Ugh, I have another 4 hours to go and my feet are just aching. This guy just came in and wanted like all of our lottery tickets and I just felt sad for him. My car didn't want to start this morning and that's why I was late and then Sharon, our manager, well she was pretty ticked but what is she going to do? Fire me? I'm the ONLY one who works extra and organizes the stuff the way it's suppose to be. Oh, that'll be $12.92. Anyway, so the back was really messy because Bryan don't know his butt from a hole in the ground and couldn't understand why you don't put the dirty mops right beside the ice machine...... This happens to me all the freaking time.
For some people, a cashier may be the only person they talk to in a day.
I stood behind a guy once who was telling the cashier about his vasectomy, and how he thought it gave him a better and longer erection...wink, wink. Poor girl turned 50 shades of crimson!
I once had a patient/customer spend forever explaining why the diabetic lancets she had been given to her at another pharmacy were crap and didn't provide her with enough blood to test. As I tried to explain to her (without actually pricking myself) how to use them, and about how much blood she actually needed, she snatched the box from my hands. She then proceeded to slash open the top of her finger and let the more than adequate blood supply plop all over the patient counseling counter. She then had the balls to give me grief for jumping back (retreating) about three feet from the counter and telling the pharmacist that we had a "biological waste situation". Probably didn't need to announce that out loud, in front of other patients, but hey - she was a wench from the get-go and needed a reality check (and that was what pharmacy guidelines instructed me to do).
Oh wow, heaven forbid someone is friendly and conversational with you.....geez, not sure I like this one
I hear you, but I want to emphasize something here. Some customers either tell cashiers really inappropriate things, or they will talk for literally 10 minutes, which is forever in cashier time. Whenever a customer yammers on for 10 minutes, the next 5 customers will yell/complain at the cashier about the wait.

This is why I NEVER purchase "made in the store" food items. Not because the store doesn't take safety precautions, but because other customers are pigs and will eat the food out, use their fingers at the salad bars, etc.
Those food items are sealed though, this customer had to break it open for this item.

IN MY HEAD THAN WHY ARE YOU SHOPING SMILE SMILE or IF WE ARE CLOSED THEY WILL SAY USELESS F##k STORE
Or y’all should be ashamed of yourselves because all your products come from China! (As they add 99 items into their carts, all from China).
I REFUSE to go to a store on a holiday. Just not to give the corporations the satisfaction of a few bucks. The ONLY reason is for med if one of my kids is really sick. It happened one year.
When They Walk In Just Before Closing
Just close the doors 5 to 10 minutes minutes before closing time and only let customers out. Common practice in the Netherlands.
We actually got in trouble at my last retail job (U.S.) for locking the door half an hour *after* closing time when we still had a family inside. Even though we accompanied them to the door after their purchase and promptly unlocked it, they called the next day and threatened to sue us because they felt "unsafe" (even though there were only 2 teenage girl workers in the store at the time). After that we were never allowed to lock the door until everyone left and people would keep coming in after closing. Retail is hell and people suck.
Load More Replies...I used to waitress years ago and people would do this all the time. It was painful especially after working the dinner rush which knocks you down. Just when you think you’re about to do closing work, bam a whole family is walks in. The worst part was, these people were not expected to just eat fast and go. They took their sweet time for at least a couple of hours.
In cases like this I've typically been told that they wouldn't stay open for much longer or that the kitchen was closed already, which was perfectly alright and then I'd go somewhere else. I wonder why some places have a policy of letting customers in no matter the opening hours.... people want to go home at some point too.

Yeah they make close to min wage, I'm sure they're in charge of what and when things get ordered. Morons
Do you know when you will get more in? -_- No I do not I just work here I don't order the stock
by the time we put the order in, The warehouse picks the order, they load the truck, get it delivered, we do the delivery check, put it on the shelves, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE INSTEAD OF POINTING OUT THE OBVIOUS!
We learned this year that if you're going to need it sometime in the immediate future, you'd better get it when you find it.
When They Come .5 Seconds Before Closing Time
In my country it is mandatory by law to have 'online cash registers' everywhere, that works like sending all data directly to some tax office or anything. It means if a shop is officially open from like 9 to 18, they can't sell you stuff AFTER 18, because register will note the tax office that out of business hours this shop was doing business. Therefore, shops can legally tell people who come this late that sorry, if you can't make your purchase in the next ten seconds, we can't legally serve you.
That's great, I think we all need to follow in Hungary's footsteps.
Load More Replies...If people do that we tell them nope they can come back tomorrow. If they hang around in the store we just yell down the aisle we're closed can you pay. Normally it takes two three different workers to tell them or someone to watch them before they move

When Customers Leave Their Dirty Trash In The Carts
When one fails to understand the simple fact that the supermarket employee is not their mom, and therefore not there to clean up after them.
My kids are 4yo and 6yo, and I already made sure that they will never think this is my job to clean after them. They clear the table after their meal, no dirty cloths outside the laundry basket, no toys all over the floor after they played, if they overthrow something, well, they mop up....I wonder if the main problem is not thinking that someone else is responsible for your mess (specially your mum).

I can’t tell you how many totally or partially empty Barnum’s Animals boxes my parents paid for, and either disposed of in the first garbage can they saw or let me carry out of the store. They would NEVER even think of being so rude or disrespectful (to the store and its employees) as to leave their (or my) garbage behind for someone else to pick up! (They were the same about littering, btw, which was unusual in the 1960s.)
This is particularly upsetting now, when you find masks, gloves, and used wipes in the carts.

Customers Are Relentless
Yeah basically. Volunteer at a zoo that’s ON A MOUNTAIN IN COLORADO. Snowstorm yesterday, today was around 9-12 degrees all day, still had a good amount of people(obviously not as much as summer months, I’d say I spoke to about 700-1000 people) but WHY???? Why would you do that to yourself? Like obviously I’m happy people are visiting the zoo but it’s 9 DEGREES OUTSIDE. WHYYYYYY?????
And I walked ten minutes each way! 2 ft of snow on the ground in a raging blizzard, because my aunt was out of coffee! 1998.
I have this thing with my dad where EVERY DAMN BLIZZARD, we WALK to a 711 and get a DAMN SLURPEE, in a blizzard, and that's the only time i ever get slurpees.
You'd be surprised how many idiots bring babies and toddlers in during bad snow weather. Idiots. Idiots everywhere.
"Well, let me think a bit about this generous offer you made... NO!"
Never had a customer say that in all my years of customer service.
You are lucky. I was cursed out because I "did not chip in to help". and was told "I'll be writing to your corporate about this, I'll get you fired." She literally wanted me to give her $7 out of my pocket. That was my hourly pay.
Load More Replies...We had this lady who came in every single weekend. Never missed a weekend and she would walk around the store and pick up various items asking if it was on sale or there was a discount. Also for an example I would say an item was $40 she would say “I’ll give u $30!” Lady this isn’t the flea market or a yard sale. She never bought anything she would just keep coming back and constantly ask the same questions.
One lady gave me a hard time because she was only like 25 cents off....lady, I don't make the rules. They count the register and we better not be short. I ain't got 25 cents. I ain't paying for your clothing.
I would have people ask that, and I would ask if they thought they were at a flea market.
My favorite, though..."Let me run out to my car for the change". OK, because no one needs to check out before you run your dumb butt to your car and back again.
If I'm not sure I have enough to cover the groceries, I warn the cashier by telling her the amount of money I have and then we both watch the total and when it gets close she/he stops and asks me if I want to stop or is there something in my basket that the remainder will cover. I love Africa.
I had a person, who may have been homeless, ask me to total the nuts and bolts he needed to fix his bike (I worked in the Hardware aisles). He didn't have enough, I gave him a discount. What burns me over and over I help people who own homes/contractors and they steal one screw or $3 packages of same. (Shaking my head now.)
Even Though Zebra Says 1 But Not Binned In Anywhere
You just go in the back, rest for 5 minutes and come back to tell him "No. We don't have it. I checked everywhere"
Ha! I was just about to spill that dirty little retail secret to the world. You beat me to the punch, Mr. Bardhi's Dad.
Load More Replies...I disagree with this, there have been MANY times where items are out the back but not on the shelves. This is as a customer and a retail worker. The stock doesn’t just magically appear on the shelves once delivered. The shelf stackers may not have had a chance to put the new stock out yet.
All true. However, usually it happens to me that the employee would offer to check in the back, so when they don't, I just assume it's out of stock and "oh, well, better luck next time". And maybe choose something else, if possible. So, I guess this one refers to customers who aren't really being kind, but too persistent instead.
Load More Replies...My dad always asks people to check in the back and I always tell him not to because I know they are thinking this Lololololololol 😂
Well to be fair, there is one store where i always insist they check the back. And guess what? Miracle! It was in the back. Given i know that they are morons in that place, usually i trust employees when they say they are out of it.
yes we do have it in the back but you cant have it as it is not on the shelf.
I always ask that because occasionally, they actually do bring stuff out from the back!
No, but I'll leave this long line of customers waiting to be checked out to cater to you.
Things-Supermarket-Employees-Hate
And yet I did get charged twice at a bookstore once when this happened. Took forever to get my money back. I realize that's an exception, not the rule, but I am wary now.
Its happened to me too. Was only £3.25 and they acted like because it wasn't much, I should just allow them to charge me twice. Wtf
Load More Replies...You know, that seems reasonable, until you get charged 14 times for a purchase because 'The card didn't go through.' I had a credit at a restaurant because this happened, I never did get my money back. After you find that sort of error on your credit card account, you kind of don't feel comfortable any more. And, it can take months to straighten out with the bank.
Yeaah...but no. It happened to me, I paid twice because it didn't work the first time (Thank you technology), and to this day I'm still waiting my 50 euros they were suppose to send me back. So, no. If I have to pay twice, sorry but I want a receipt something went wrong in case it happens again.
Uh here if your card is declined, it says so on the screen AND it prints a receipt saying declined.
Actually... my wardrobe looks like this. But i didn't shop any outfit since a year so, it'just my wardrobe.
Me too - my house is very messy, but I would NEVER leave a mess in public for someone else to clean up. It's just my own house which affects only me.

i do better at folding clothes in the stores than I do at my house
"Oh, just leave it, they have somebody to clean that up." I it should be a requirement for every person that graduates high school to work a year in Retail before they're allowed to work anywhere else.

That's pretty good compared to the posts about people using them as bathrooms.

having worked in retail... I sometimes follow people in other stores, folding up after them while muttering what an asshole they are... heh heh...

When Customers Disappear After Employees Go Into The Back To Get Something For Them
Reminds me the scene with Rowan Atkinson and Alan Rickman in the movie "Love Actually"
why does a clothes store call customers Guests? its not a spa they are customers.
Oh God! They're gone in a twinkling. It doesn't even help to page for "the Customer looking for gold plated dog turds to come back to aisle 6"
Always to be expected. That's why I have no expectations of customers. That keeps me from blowing a blood vessel.
Cough Cough
I feel awful for my son. He spits when he talks because of a few reasons. He has a lateral lisp which causes excess saliva and he has low muscle tone in his mouth which causes him to still dribble and not have as much control as most people do. I worry how that will impact him as he gets older.
Sorry for your sons problem, but he should be wearing a mask if he speaks fluent. No matter what age he is.

I am getting tired of old people being made fun of. A lot of young people are dunderheads. I am 79 and have been working at Walmart for 19 years. I zone housewares and domestics and sometimes go to cashier. There is no special age for dumb.
"I'm sorry. The manufacturer won't reimburse us for this if we exceed their cutoff date."

Geez I remember when I would use coupons at Meijer for stuff I didn't even buy and they went thru, doesn't happen anymore lol
But sometimes people who don't work at a store can be found folding things because they unfolded them.
Thats me. Whats worse is when im wearing a red polo in a Target. I have helped countless people and i dont get paid lol.
Load More Replies...And sometimes stores don't have store uniforms for their employees, and in warmer seasons / regions customers and employees will be wearing similar clothing. It's not always obvious who is a customer, and who is an employee.
Yes, but if you are wearing a polyester pullover with the store's name on it and a name tag, the customer should be able to figure it out. I doubt many people cosplay as a retail workers.
Load More Replies...So used to working in retail, I am smiling at people in other stores when I am shopping. I frequent the same stores so I am usually familiar with where products are and it must show. Even with my coat on I get asked questions all the time. I am amused. Now being asked if I work here while wearing the store apron...it bothers me less because sometimes a customer means 'in the section' in which I am standing in.
I made the mistake of wearing blue shirt and tan pants to Walmart one time. At least 3 people asked me where something was. I won't do that, again. Lol
My mom was a medical assistant in a group practice with many doctors and a shared waiting room. Her desk was on the side of the waiting room. She wore a white uniform. She might be talking on the phone, getting a chart ready for the doctor (pre-computer days), non-verbally signaling a patient to enter the doctor's office, [she was a master multi-tasker] and someone would invariably toddle up and ask, "Excuse me, do you work here?" Her answer was always, "No, I'm just here to dress up the place."
Imagine that you're wearing the brightly colored Special Sale shirt and the customers still ask that question.
Sometimes they'll look like they're wearing the same clothes as the employees and their name tag isn't visible.
When People Leave Food In A Cart
Carts need a sign, like, “Don’t complain about rising prices of food when you do this s**t!”
That is already included in the price. Prices of food always go up only for one reason: the maximal profit they could make from customers. Nothing else
Load More Replies...This rarely happened when I worked in a supermarket. I have had to ask the front desk if I could leave my trolley with them coz my child decides they need the toilet desperately even though they went (or didn’t need to) just before. I have always come back for it.
In their defense what if they had an emergency and had to leave suddenly
It gets tossed usually. It's very upsetting because we literally don't have enough to eat and I know there is a lot of food going straight in the bin.
here in the UK you have to put a coin in to use the cart and you don't get it back till you put the cart back. The carts are stacked out side the supermarket
Somebody might of forgot their wallet so they just left the cart behind
When People Take Something Out Of Its Package And Just Leave It There
I admit: I did that once or twice. The packaging had no information about the fabric on it, but I need that info for my decision. Afterwards I really really tried getting the stuff back in the packaging, but gave up after 5 to 10 minutes. If the damn manufacturer is not able to print the f*****g type of fabric on the packaging and I have no chance getting the stuff back in the packaging because it was packed under a vacuum... sorry. And yes. I asked staff about the type of fabric, and mostly the answer is a blank stare and an „I don’t know...“
Please do not blame staff. My big box store experience as an employee is that the company spends no time training staff about the products being sold. Pull your phone out and try Googling the item.

I will admit I did this once. I wanted a better look at the product but when I went to put it back, no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get it back in. Haven’t done it again since.
Lara, stop. Just stop. There’s nothing wrong with stuff made in China except for the conditions they were made in and the salary of the people who did.
Customers have a right to see what they are buying. Then, of course it doesnt fit back in the packaging. Leave one out for people to see.
What you should have asked them was "Is there an open one of these that I can have a look at?" I've found that a lot of places have stock that has arrived in damaged packaging and cant be sold and they are happy to go get it for you to examine instead of damaging more expensive sellable shelf stock. Just don't expect it to be an option but more of an off chance
(I suppose that is an answer for me.) If they already had a damaged packaging in the back, couldn’t they just say „I don’t know, but I have an open packaging in the back, let me take a quick look.“

When They Beckon An Employee Over Like They're A Trained Animal
I'm a boomer and I have never done that. I find a worker and POLITELY ask them for help. I always say "sorry to bother you, but...". Politeness is not restricted to Millennials and whatever they are these days.
That's great, but from my own experience working in retail/service, it's the older people who are the rudest. Not that all older people are rude, far from it. Just that the vast majority of people who ARE rude happen to be older.
Load More Replies...I was born in 1960, so I guess I'm considered a baby boomer. I would NEVER do that. This isn't a "boomer" problem. It's a jackass problem.
Don’t blame boomers. I’m a boomer (late boomer on the cusp of GenX), and I would never insult a store employee by treating them like that. I have great respect for what they do and even greater respect for the assholes they put up with.
I will ask if they lost their dog if I get whistled at.
Load More Replies...Many years ago i worked at home depot, people would do this or snap their fingers at me. I would look at them making eye contact and walk away. Sorry, nope.

Things Supermarket Employees Hate
Customers hate being asked this, too. Why does it matter? Is there a price differential?
The poor employee probably has some button to push on the register that management has set up that must be entered before the transaction can go proceed. Credit card purchases charge fees to the business, but debit cards usually don't.
I don't know WHY companies have to design their cards with the SAME colors and similar designs on them.........most all of my cards are red. And I'm usually pretty good at paying attention. But one time I grabbed my library card and gave it to the clerk. He said he couldn't take it. I asked why, he said it was a library card. I said "Geez, when did you stop taking library cards as payment"? (as I was handing him my credit card) He laughed. I told him what a dumb ass I was for not paying attention. He started laughing more.....and I laughed. So, I hope I put a kink in his bad retail day.
In France (and I suppose the rest of Europe too) they just ask you if you pay by cash or card. I was never asked f it's debit/credit. Most people have a debit card anyway.
This reminds me of my first job bagging groceries. I would ask them if they wanted paper or plastic (this was many years ago). I lost count of how many times their reply was "I want mine in bags." Yes, I understand that, what kind of bags?
At least people aren't writing checks at stores anymore. That was the worst. I remember at Sears the little old ladies would ask me to fill out their checks for them (except signature)... And they all. Write. Checks.
We ask if it will be cash or card. Some stores though have a cash, debit and credit buttons, so that is why they ask that!
Who Just Decided "No" On The TV?
I really don't understand how people can do things like this. It's so...
Honestly I feel like they should really implement things on the corner of the aisles with little fridges (for cold foods) and shelves that say "Change your mind, put it here and we'll take care of it" that way people dont just leave stuff everywhere else but where it goes. Plus it will make it easier on the employees too. this is coming from someone who used to work retail.
literally my mom does this all the time like if we go to a price scanner and she doesnt want the item anymore she just sets it on the shelf and i have to clean up after her and take the item to the correct place
And you know darn well some Karen is gonna be like, "But I found this on a rack for $15! You better honor that! Where's the manager?!"
Something went down between a husband and wife here. The husband lost.
The guy who made an employee jump through hoops to get it down and his wife caught him with it.

So the customer went the extra mile to check if the item he wants is still in stock before he makes the trip, with a service the store provides for exactly that purpose, and you hate him for it? Wow. That’s entitled.
Online stock levels are dependent on updated instore stock levels. The online levels may only be updated once or twice a day and are not usually live levels. So a store may show an item in stock which has since sold. Online stock levels are a guide, not a guarantee and abusing a staff member for something they have zero control over is rude.
Load More Replies...Actually I do check online stock before I leave the house...and most the time I'm only leaving the house because it says item is for "pickup only". So yeah I'm gonna be pissed when I go to the store and it's not there when it said IN STOCK online!
I don't agree with this one. If the store has an online stock system then it should be correct. If they cant ensure that stock levels are accurately represented then they should not be displaying the information to customers. I realise this is not the cashiers fault - but this is a genuine complaint and should be fed back to management.
or maybe they should say something like '1 instock' or '15 instock. Then depending on the quantity, you make your own decision
Load More Replies...The customer later goes back and chops his head off. the whole store looks at him "what I went for his freaking' head!"
Often stolen. Sometimes wrong count entered when received. Sometimes misplaced.
What people need to understand is “in stock” either may have been the status at that precise time, but has changed by the time they get to the store, or was correct until the updated status was entered and reached the website. U less you order it right that second, between the time you check the status of an item and you finally get to the store, any number of people could’ve bought them all.
sorry the customer before you just bought the last one. should've got here quicker or reserved on line
"98% Of Customers Are Illiterate"
Sometimes this discount applies only to certain items and it isn't always clear which one
Agreed. Also, sometimes the sign is in an odd place. It's happened to me, and then I get attitude from the cashier. The question is valid.
Load More Replies...True, but how many times have I gotten to the checkout only to have the cashier say, 'Sorry, that's not on the sale.' for some obscure reason?
There’s been times where a different customer puts a wrong item on the sales rack and then the next customer bitches at me because it’s not actually on sale even though it was on the rack. OR we’ve had people who get the item from the correct area and then try to say they found it on the sale rack. Or switch the tag on a new item with a sale item. We try to keep everything in place where it should be but if it’s super busy we don’t have time to get to it yet and re organize the sale stuff. Some people can be super shady.
Nah, I'm not on board with this criticism. More than once I've shopped at a place w/ signs like this, only to get charged regular price because something about my item disqualified it from the sale.
Or someone set it on that shelf when they realized it was NOT 60% off.
I just want a good ol sticker price on an item. I don't want to do tons of math, I don't want to search for the price above or below the product on the shelves. I wants the 80's back. Lol
Sometimes people put other items (as we’ve already seen) in other places so you can’t always tell
I ask this because sometimes is original price, sometimes is price with discount already applied.
People Who Shop At The Absolute Last Minute
In a way I wish we had coupons like they do in the US but as a past checkout operator I am also glad we don’t. Takes up so much time.
And sometimes the coupons are expired but because of the small print it’s impossible to know, and sometimes the coupons are for a certain size or for the NEW! IMPROVED! product and not the EVEN NEWER! HOLY GOD IT’S UNBELIEVABLE! version.

When Customers Mess Up The Displays
No, I get looked at oddly because I'm the customer that will stand the boxes back up and put things in order because it drives me nuts when it's not neat.
Probably because you’re a rare gem. We never get to see people like you helping! I’d stare at you like you were a unicorn pooping gold coins!
Load More Replies...It's annoying when you just made a nice display and people dig into your work to pick an item from the bottom which is completely identical to all the items on the top. They do it on purpose, so stop fixing the displays.
Or they cough into their hands? Like, you're gonna touch something in here and now I have to watch you so I can sanitize it.
Ugh! There ought to be a law! These are scary times for that sort of thing.
"No thank you, I've got your change" or any other polite reply is also fine ... Sometimes customers make mistakes, sometimes they're just really bad at counting or they're distracted. Yes, I've worked in retail for years. If you hate customers that much that you have to bitch about something as little as them proposing the wrong amount of change, please don't take a job in retail.
This isn't that bad. If I ever noticed someone still digging for change I would wait a sec to see if they found it. No big deal.
Give them a 1.40 back. Usually its not worth your time or explaining to do anything else. If they have already dug for change that means they have already slowed that line down and explaining only slows it down further.
That's what I used to do. Take what they give and give out whatever is change. Many times they realize their mistake after.
Load More Replies...I'm the customer that never study matematic and once the cashier asks for some coins, I show in my hand all I have. Sometimes seems like I don't know Euro sometimes they thank as they are out of coins.
A lot of the time I will give more change over the amount because I want to get less coins back. Like, if the total is $9.22, if I pay with a $10, I'll get 3 quarters and 3 pennies back, but if I pay with a $10, 1 quarter, and 2 pennies, I'll get a $1 and a nickel back. This is less change for me to carry around, which is a plus. It should be less work for the cashier giving me change as well, unless they question it and I have to explain the whole thing to them. When I lived in Japan giving extra change to get less change back was super common, everyone did it. In the US, it seems like no one does this, possibly because people here suck at math.
Customers Who Are Chasing You
They just wait for you to come back out and then start asking you to help, even as you tell them you can't. "I understand that but can't you just help me?" "No, I am on break and cannot help." "I understand that but can't you just- hey! I am talking to you! Get back here!"
I had just clocked out and I was buying something for myself when a customer asked for help with thing that would take a long time. That part was understandable, but when I told them that I was sorry but I was not on clock, she demanded I help her, and I told her that someone at the service counter could help her, but I was not working, and I was getting some golfish and going home. I swear demons were realeased from hell when she reacted to that.
New Infant Salad
The worst is when they take something like raw meat that needs to stay in the freezer section and dumps it with something like clothes. Such a waste of food.
When I worked in a grocery store when I was in high school I was straightening up the cat food and behind some cans I found an opened can and it was filled with maggots I will never forget it. I don’t understand why someone felt the need to open a cat food and if they did why not throw it away or give it to an employee.
"Dear Ladies And Gentlemen I Am Going To Thank This Fellow Customer For This Nice Display"

I get it, but sometimes you just can’t remember where you got something and don’t want to be bothered hunting around and around to figure out where the item goes back. It’s non-perishable and it’s hung up, so I’d let it go.

OMG!!!! I call them Zombies at the Gate. Really? Do you really have to be the first one in?! Really?
This used to happen to me when I came in to work early to do paperwork. People saw a light and they would knock on the window to get my attention. I would ignore them, hoping they'd go away. But, instead, they'd knock with even more force. I'd go to the door, and point to the 'opening hours' sign. This is the response I'd get: "Yeah, but can I still come in and look?" I always walked away.

I could not find the bacon at Wal-Mart the other day. The whole freaking store had been rearranged. I hate it when that happens. I asked a guy in a Wal-Mart shirt that was collecting groceries for someone who ordered online. He said he didn't know where the bacon was, because he only does the shopping for people. What? And no one wanted bacon? I eventually found it by the eggs, which is where it should have been all along.
A Zebra is indeed a small scanner used to order merchandise, verify prices, check inventory, that sort of thing, although I may have the ultimate "Do you work here". At Barnes and Noble I'm behind the counter, at a register, typing into it, wearing a B&N nametag, and get asked "Do you work here". What did this utter idiot honestly think I was doing behind the counter?
I once stood in the customer service area of Best Buy waiting for an employee to find the TV I had ordered online. Granted, my shirt was blue, but it was a much different shad than Best Buy Blue, was a t-shirt not a polo, and had a dragon on it. In addition, I was wearing jeans, a vest, and a blue boonie hat. I still had to explain to several customers that I didn't work there.

...But... You're both going to touch the coins.....
Load More Replies...My face when I give money on the hand and cashier put coins on the counter and I have to use both hands to retrieve the money. gggrrr
Yes and it's a silly rule. Placing your contaminated money on the counter where the cashier has to pick it up doesn't make the money sterile, unless the cashier first uses a flamethrower to disinfect the money.
Load More Replies...I hate it when they put the bills in your hand first then dump the change on top so that it slides all around. It's really hard to maneuver putting that change away when you need your hands to open/hold your wallet.
Plus a bug long receipt I always end up sticking in my wallet with my money and when I try to pull it out money flies everywhere.
Load More Replies...Why would you want that, though? People are disgusting and so is their money.
And you being a jerk is on nobody except you.
Load More Replies...Second, the transaction has already gone through the register and my brain is following the instructions on the tiny screen which tell me how much change to hand over with your receipt. Done, finite, transaction complete! Adding a penny derails the entire transaction. You may have a bit less coin in your wallet, but it's just caused me doubles the work.
It’s a shame your brain works so slowly you can’t figure out how to make change with the added penny.

I do not think this reflects normal customer behaviour. One respectless will outweighs 99 considerate ones. And most of the things shown here are likewise annoying to other customers than to staff.
I think I could never work on retail. If I'd see any of the crap people pull I'd lose all filters and go off on them. I was taught to be respectful to other people and things I do not own. Clearly there are people that just don't have the mental capacity to understand that.
I've worked retail, both as a worker and a manager. Some customers are idiots and very entitled behaving. However, some retail workers are lazy, rude and disinterested in helping anyone. They can be rude, nasty and dishonest. So, yeah...nasty people on both sides. Saying this, there is NEVER any excuse for being rude, nasty, entitled or demeaning toward anyone, including someone who is this way toward you. If you are a customer and an employee is less than professional, find the manager and complain, but be honest, be polite and try not labeling someone for one bad day.
Here's two. 1. If an item is on sale, it tends to go pretty fast. Had a female customer who was looking for bread on sale but there was none on the shelf. I went in the back and couldn't find the bread I'm looking for. I go back to the store and explain that we're completely out. This then turns into this. Her: But it's on sale. It's even in the paper and since it's on sale it should be on the shelf. Me: Yes, Ma'am but sometimes when an item is on sale it tends to go rather quickly. Repeat conversation 5X before another employee comes up and watch as the explanation is repeated the same amount of times. 2. When you say an item is a certain price and I have to do a price check, if my price is different then your's and you insist on seeing the price for yourself, the price I'm pointing to is the actual price. It's not the price to the left of the item. It's not the price to the right of the item. It's not on the shelf above or below of item. The price is where I'm pointing. Period.
One thing to add to the HATE list: Instore Radio. If I hear "More Than Words" one more time or one more Maddona tune I'd like to take a hammer to the loudspeakers.!
Yeah, yeah I get it. All customers are assholes and retailers are poor downtrodden saints. In the interest of fairness how about posting things that retailers do that customers hate?
I’d like to see a list of things that decent, polite customers hate about rude, oblivious clerks.
