When I was five, I sincerely believed in Santa and the Tooth Fairy, at seventeen - that at least someone in this world could stop Michael Jordan on his way to the sixth ring, at thirty - that the ratings of songs on streaming services reflect their true popularity. As Thorin Oakenshield said, “I’ve never been so wrong in all my life...”
Well, that's the thing about growing up and gaining what people usually call ‘wisdom’ - that over the years, we change our views on things, and what we believed with all the fervor of a neophyte in our youth seems ridiculous years later. However, not always - and our selection, based on this viral thread in the AskReddit community, is intended to convince you of this. Or at least give rise to a good discussion.

Sports. I get it, entertainment. But like, calm down. You aren't on the team. Take a breath.
Maybe they aren't on the team, but they feel like they do. It's a kind of extended family, I guess. I'm not a sport enthusiast by any means, but I can see people are drawn to that feeling of community, of supporting each other when it comes to team sports.
The irony when person wearing a Mahomes jersey gets mad at a teen for wearing cat ears in public always tickles me. "Oh, I'm sorry that The Youth are having fun, Sports Cosplayer!"

Always reminds of the Jerry Seinfeld joke about overenthusiastic sports fans: "We won! We won!"...No they won, you watched
I've never understood this mentality. Like the OP said you aren't on the team. Also unless you live in select cities you don't have any financial investment in the team. Also, with American football, the team might just leave your city any year and move somewhere they can make more money. I think being super invested in a sports team is a mental illness.
If it is, it's existed since ancient times, so I doubt it'll go away anytime soon.
Load More Replies...The gross amounts of money people are willing to pay is what boggles my mind. Especially for major events like the Super bowl. For the 2024 super bowl -= "Ticketmaster, which serves as the NFL's official ticket platform, showed the lowest price for tickets lately running at $6,500, while the cheapest on Stubhub were running at a little over six grand. " Plus plane tickets, hotel, overpriced memorabilia / clothing / food. A whole family going to the super bowl could literally purchase a new car instead. All for a game that lasts = "on average the Super Bowl lasts three hours and 12 minutes" The same article also said, "A ticket to the Super Bowl in 1967 cost $10, or just over $90 adjusted for inflation."
"Bread and circuses". Likely for thousands of years as a lot of humans are easily amused.

I used to wonder "Why get so off the wall and over the edge about something that really means nothing?" But that's the point - it means nothing so it's ok to vent that way. Save your calm deliberation for things that actually affect yourself and others.
True, but to the point of smashing your tv cause "your" team lost? That is where is gets ridiculous and kinda frightening.

Social media in general. Too many people believe every clickbait headline, or buy in to whatever trend is taking over. Feels like people can't self soothe and need the validation or something, it's just weird.

Having a loud exhaust or sound system in your car.
If you have a car where peak performance is the goal, loud exhaust is just a side effect of making the engine perform better. If you're building a car to take to the track then more power to you. If you have a loud exhaust on your daily driver you're just doing it for attention. There are plenty of performance exhaust systems that have valves to keep noise down at cruising speed and only open up over a certain RPM or with wide open throttle. If you want some more power in your daily go with one of those, keeps everyone happy.
I have a neighbor with an obnoxiously loud car. He parks it behind the house not far from my bedroom window. I'm not sure which is worse: in the warmer months when I want my window open, or the colder months when he lets it run for 30 minutes to warm it up.
Buy him a block heater for Christmas. 30 minutes is a huge waste of energy.

If there is a noise bylaw where you live maybe check it out. Him starting his car is one thing but revving it is ridiculous
Load More Replies...Yeah, what I want is an exhaust that sounds good (a lot are very annoying) and is loud enough to be heard but not enough to annoy others, just so I can enjoy it myself and not make others have to deal with it
Or your motorcycle. Nobody likes waking up at 2am because of your loud and noisy bike. My dog hates them with a passion, and I agree. Annoying as ef!
I like fast cars but not the noise. Honestly the loud pipes are cool for the once in awhile where you want to play race car but the car always sound like that which makes it suck as a daily driver. Some people just way over do it too. I can’t believe it doesn’t drive them nuts. It’s drowning out my music in my car and we’re not even moving.
In fact, it’s pretty common for humanity to revise its views over time. For example, a couple of centuries ago, we knew ‘for sure’ that only birds and angels could fly in the sky, half a thousand years ago the very idea of printing books looked like complete nonsense, and around the same time almost the whole world was damn sure that the Earth was actually flat... hmm, well, not the best example, I agree.
Elon Musk and other billionaire "geniuses." People are pretty freaking gullible.
He makes the executive decisions. Like when Starship vaporized the launch pad and dumped the debris on the nearby town because Musk didn't want to wait for the deluge plate to be installed. Think any of the engineers warned him? They all warned him. But that's why he get's the big buck, because he's the visionary. Meanwhile Tesla is going down the tubes while he wastes his time on the stupidest "truck" ever made, but that's the engineers' fault, because he promised full self driving. There's no need to even mention the fiasco formerly known as Twitter. The guy is a train wreck, but as long as you're rich, people let you keep doing it. Just don't ruin my internet, Musk. Leave Starlink to the adults, please.

That 5G towers caused Covid. Like, wtf.
The version I heard is that the 5G signals activate nanobots in the vaccine that edit people's genes to make white people less white. Or possibly trans, I can't remember.
I had someone track me down to tell me the Vax was going to make us all 5G transmitters and would change our DNA to make us less human. Like genuinely believed it because a nurse had sent her a video about it. Personally thought that nurse should've lost her license over that one.
Load More Replies...Silly rabbit. 5G didn't CAUSE covid. It is just the communication protocol used to send instructions to the nanobots included with the vaccines. But a huge thing THEY don't want you to know is you can gain control over the nanobots. If you bury and old refrigerator under your house and crawl inside and close the lid it blocks the 5G signal. If you stay in there for a few days, with no signal the nanobots eventually reboot to their default state and give you superpowers. Which superpower(s) you get is kind of random though so you might have to experiment. Try jumping off a roof or a tall tree to see if you can fly. Stare intently at strangers to see if you can read their mind. Stuff like that. /J /S TLDR: Don't be a moron.
Much of the 5G frequency spectrum in my area occupies former VHF analog television channels. If Ch7 wasn't causing disease for 70 years, then cell phones aren't causing disease now.
Yeah, they all seem to think that the radio waves being used for the 5G networks just suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

Flat Earth. Literally don't believe it. I think these people are fictional.

I was verbally threatened and insulted by flat earthers who I challenged on a Youtube video. This anti-science belief is no longer a satire like the originator intended.
They aren't and I've met people who believe it who are in places of power where it could be harmful. I worked with an IT guy who worked for a month for an airline on their fuel planning. NYC and Beijing are the same latitude. You need a lot more gas if you can't go over the Arctic circle because the earth is flat.
You mean like Santa, the Easter bunny, fairies and eskimos?/s. I wish they would all get on a boat and do their best to sail off the edge personally.
For attention. They just do it for the attention their parents neglected to give them.

Flat Earthers are real, but they don't actually believe the world is flat, they just don't believe it's round. The point of it is, you can't make them believe anything they don't want to. Conscious or unconscious, it's purely an act of intellectual defiance.
In fact, if you look at the selection of the most popular opinions from the original thread, you can see that almost half of the examples given are somehow related to the Internet. Yes, that’s right - three decades ago, scientists seriously believed that the very opportunity to gain access to all the knowledge of humanity almost directly from your favorite couch, the opportunity to discuss anything with a person on the other side of the globe - this is the path to unprecedented progress in knowledge! And where on [flat] Earth did we take a wrong turn?
My dad once told me he believed that 9/11 was a hologram...
How can anyone, any age, take that seriously? Like, I'm supposed to take advice from someone who believes in bizarre theories like that? I wouldn't be surprised if he believes in lizard people and spaghetti god; or, I don't know, we evolved from dolphins.
How does any grown-up take him seriously?
As a devout Pastafarian I know his holiness will save us from the evil lizard overlords with his noodly appendage.

This is difficult to know when you don’t know someone, but what you’re describing reminds me a bit of parents who harbor, sometimes subconsciously, feelings of guilt surrounding their own parenting choices and their possible consequences, as they believe them to be. One way of dealing with these feelings is by making sure to blame it on others. (Sometimes parents with mental health issues including feeling low self worth can do the opposite- they feel like they’re lousy parents even if they’re not.) Parenting is tough!

Social Influencers.
I honestly thought the whole "influencers" thing was an exaggeration but then I was at this high class shopping/eating area in Sydney and saw these two women at one of the restaurants with a VERY fancy camera setup, taking pictures of all this delicious food without ever actually eating it (depressingly, they had a kid with them who was sitting by also not getting to eat any of the food). I commented to the shop assistant I had been talking to saying oh are they making an advertisement for the restaurant? He resignedly said no, those are influencers and we get them here all the time. Wasting food. This was years ago and the memory still annoys me.
The problem stupidity does not lie with the influencer, but the influenced.
I don’t know anything about influencers. I have a vague idea of what they are but I can’t name any and I’m just fine about that.
I will never understand this. This person knows less than you do but buy this product because they say it's great.

A lot of the MAGA know they aren't very bright and are bad at figuring stuff out. So they navigate their life by deciding who they trust and then believe whatever they say. Often it is a patriarchal figure, such as biblical interpretations of god or Jesus, their church pastor, their husband, their father, or that nut job on the internet who makes them feel better about themselves. Ultimately, the person they trust the most is the one that makes them feel better. Doesn't matter why and they aren't applying critical thought. Why would they listen to you and your "woke" agenda? It never makes them feel better about themselves.

A lot of the Q-anon stuff can be traced to popular media from people's childhoods. Lizard people? Yeah, it was called 'V'. I loved that show. Hillary drinking the blood of children? That's the Dark Crystal scene when they drain the lifeforce from the Podling and drink it to stay young. Somehow it's easier to get people to accept nonsense if it has some tangential reference to a childhood memory. It creates a continuity and makes it seem more real.

‘Reality’ tv. People get so invested. .
I never understood this....why would a complete strangers life mean anything to me? I care about what's in front of me, that's plenty.
I don’t know where you live but in the UK we have a TV show called Gogglebox. It’s people being recorded in their living rooms with family or friends, watching TV and talking about it. I don’t watch reality TV but that is the most insane concept to me. Why would I watch other people watch TV? 🤯
Load More Replies...I hate the fact it's called "reality" tv especially when it's extremely fake. It really needs a new genre name more suited to it.

Actual reality television would be boring af. Humans just aren't that interesting unless someone writes it for them. Even with a bunch of writers, humans on reality television are just not interesting.
Religion.
I'm not trying to be edgy, but true believers. Really?
I could understand using parables to educate, but the adults that believe the miracles and magic... I cannot fathom it.
I simply have to accept that's how humans are. There's a survival reason we see faces in the shadows. It may have been a tiger or not but I can think about that as I'm running away safely. The same quirk of imagination gave us religion.
Arg!
Oh well. At least it also gave us music.
We're a weird animal aren't we?
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far for this. I'm not even religious, but like, come on... let people believe in stuff as long as they're not d!cks about it. Also don't claim something "all religions" when you actually mean two specific flavors of Christianity and extreme Islam.
and also gives your money to a "priest" that flies jets and lives in a mantion?!!
There are thousands of religions and millions of gods and each religion thinks they have the one and only true god. The worst part of some religions is how they try and push their religious nuttery down everyone's throats. See MAGA
I'm a Muslim and i live by don't be tool bag to others. Be kind, don't judge, don't shove stuff down anyone's throat and just live your life
Religion is around because people fear death, need guidance, and want answers to big questions. In other words, it's not going away. But it can progress. And regress, too.
Why is the Big Bang, something that has only happened once and therefore can't be subjected to the scientific method through observation, widely accepted, but a miracle performed in the Bible isn't? They've both only happened once. They weren't repeated and can't be observed for consistency between cause and effect in the same way gravity or thermodynamics was observed. So why is a miracle any different?
The line between what we think is magic and science is blurred when you get into the details. The Chinese have a satellite that transmits messages using quantum entanglement. If you look how it works, its almost identical to a D&D sending stone. If there is a god, isn't physics a lot easier way to run a universe instead of manually restarting it every second? “Just because you can explain it doesn't mean it's not still a miracle.” - Terry Pratchett (atheist and humanist).
Psychology research has identified parts of the human brain that appear to respond to, or generate the feeling of, spiritual and religious experiences. This suggests that not only is the tendency toward spiritual beliefs innate to our brains, but it likely had survival benefits in early human communities.
Online people's opinions.
Who gives a s**t what some random c**t on a screen says? Never understood how fully grown adults get so worked up over it.
To be fair, if someone online says something horrible, racist, or insulting, I wouldn't blame people for getting worked up about it.
The challenge comes from trying to determine whether they're a troll purely doing it to push your buttons, or genuinely deluded.

I think kind of revolting against modern medicine is something that I feel is awkwardly privileged.
Like, if I get really sick emergency medical care can get me.. while I consume raw eggs, raw milk, raw food ( I don't know of anyone who I know is doing the third thing, but I'm seeing weird trends of this type of c**p on Tiktock or Instagram.)
And don't give me started on vaccines... there's this weird kind of good faith argument that if someone dies of pneumonia or covid, that's nature taking its course, but if these individuals die of anything after the modern jab, it's all vaccine related and untimely.
If medication is a sin then why does it save lives? Why were doctors made if we aren't allowed to take their help? Why in religious texts that the messengers of God/Gods (depending on which religion) healed people if nature was allowed to take its course? Are questions I asked my friend who shared the "anti-med" belief. He couldn't answer any of them and didn't come back to school for a month after that.
I'm frustrated by the people who say they don't need doctors because they can just pray for God to heal them. Apparently it never occurred to them that maybe God is responsible for the doctors. It reminds me of the old saying about the family who refused to evacuate their home during a flood because they said God would save them. They drowned, and when they got to Heaven they asked why God hadn't saved them. They were told "He sent two boats and a helicopter!!"

A couple of weeks ago, there was a measles outbreak in a red state and the anti-vaxxers, were angry that the government allowed this to happen. You can't make this stuff up.
I just read that Kash Patel is selling mRNA detox pills to anti-vaxxers who believe that vaccinated people "shed spike proteins" that infect "healthy" unvaccinated people. I find it deeply ironic that these people believe vaccinated people put others at risk, and that the only cure for real medical science is snake oil.
It annoys me no end that people refuse to get vaccinated, but show up in the emergency room when they get covid and expect the same caregivers to save their lives. If people are so opposed to modern medicine, why don’t they just stay home and suffer.
That attitude led to a lot of overcrowding in hospitals.

This is niche but community theatre. The DRAMA among grown adults is insane, worse than when I was in high school.
Like yall, we are singing and dancing and wearing silly costumes. It’s not that serious.
This one likely depends heavily on the theater in question. My mother acted in a local theater and even directed a couple of the plays. And another lifelong friend acted in a couple of plays at a different local theater. Everyone was nice, got along and as far as I can tell - no drama except what was in the script. They did it to have fun. And I have attended several plays and enjoyed them. Obviously not as polished or highly produced as a big name theater company but the tickets were inexpensive and I didn't have to drive two hours to Seattle or Vancouver. Just - in general - good clean local fun.
If you'd like to see the offstage drama mocked, I recommend the 1996 fim Waiting for Guffman. It's by some of the same folks who did This Is Spinal Tap.
The less important something is in the grand scheme of things, the more intense the rivalries and disagreements between the people involved. If all someone has is a small thing, that becomes intensely important to them.
One reason I decided not to get into theater (particularly musical theater). So much backstabbing and cattiness, picking favorites while ignoring new talent, blatant nepotism, picking people just for being pretty/handsome/cute regardless of whether they have talent or not, lying, the list goes on. It's ridiculous. Some people can handle that toxic, overly competitive environment, but I never could.
I think acting would be fun, pretending to be someone else, except for the other people.
Stanley cups. I don’t get it, at all, they make me angry because you can’t put them in a bag without spilling.
Overpriced honestly. I got my metal water bottle from Wallmart, still going strong
It took me weeks, if not months, to fully understand that this obsession was about a brand name hot cup, and not Lord Stanley's Cup.
All I can think of when I hear Stanley is my dad's old Stanley thermos he took to work with him everyday and the smell of hot coffee when he opened it
I too don't get the recent fad. But I'm also raising my eyebrows at someone who gets mad that a travel mug leaks when you toss it in a bag. Travel mugs are generally about stopping splash spills while driving. Most are not meant to be airtight. My nalgene water bottle is air tight and can definitely be tossed in a bag without spilling. But it is a different sort of product than a stanley cup
Cryptocurrencies, the Metaverse, and other such b******t technologies. Also, in the case of men, the Alpha/Sigma male s**t, and in the case of women, the Witch-Tok and other such girly s**t.
Don’t forget about the full release males that come after them!

The royal family. What in the actual f**k?
It's a bit ridiculous how much coverage is given to the British Royal family in the U.S. This isn't news! We were founded specifically to not have to follow them
We’re told that the British people love their royalty, and it seems like a harmless (but expensive) thing to love. At least the Brits don’t love, like, Putin or Netanhayu (sp?). Those are not harmless things to love.
The British Royal Family pay taxes and bring in tourists, amongst other things that make money for the country. They are not an "expense."

Someone I knew would always dress up as Santa Claus at a previous employer for a day and people would bring in their kids. It was completely volunteer and he actually started the whole thing. People would then add to the festivities for the kids. They would have a couple of meetings prior to coordinate. Until one year that "one person" thought they were the boss. Suggested a date and he responded he had plans that day. Chewed him out and demanded he show up that date. Told them to get themselves another Santa....
The royal family/monarchy , like it or not, is the backbone of British history. And if you are native English speaker, as many of us here will be, it's very likely your history too.
There are numerous people of color in countries around the world who are native English speakers, and would strongly disagree.
Load More Replies...Also: some royals have done really good things with their lives (f.ex. Lady Diana). I don’t know about that many things from the Kardashians that haven’t been completely self serving.

The Disney Adults who get all bent because their favorite movie for little girls got remade and they dint like it none. Like it ain't that serious Mary.
Yes because no one batted an eye when they didnt cast an actual purple person to play Ursula in Little Mermaid.
I did. And I batted the other eye when they cast Melissa McCarthy. She only ever plays herself with different names, and is about as funny as finding out your favourite pet was stolen.

So are Disney still pulling their old content and removing ways to watch/purchase it? I know for awhile there it looked like there was going to be no way to actually watch a lot of the classic Disney movies. Has that changed?
Ah yes, the infamous Disney Vault. From what I recall, that's been their marketing strategy since at least VHS. They put out one version on the most recent media, but spread it out so much so that the sales of one doesn't compromise the sale of other projects. Then you stick them "back in the vault", creating a finite supply, which drives engagement and sales.
Load More Replies...It's almost like actors are just PRETENDING to be characters in fictional stories. Stuff that was common in the 60s/70s would have people losing their minds now. The indians on F troop were mostly white actors (and they were called indians, not "native americans"). The germans on Hogans' Heroes were not really germans. You didn't often see a white person doing blackface but if you did - they didn't roll out the cancel culture guillotine. And so on - you get the idea. So I find it funny if someone my age screams because a ghostbuster or a disney character is female or gay or whatever.== However I do agree with disliking if the sole reason for a remake is change in the lead character. for example - I enjoyed the Die Hard movies and the John Wick movies. But if they make another one - make another one. Don't just remake the same movie because you replaced Bruce Willis with a lesbian. Just make a new bad a*s die hard movie with a lesbian if that's what you want.
Even worse is when Disney takes a great story (think Winnie the Pooh) and 'remakes' it.
Are you talking about the horror movie? That was made by an independent group.

Politicians. Like holy s**t, be interested in your *own* life a little more.
People in the US pay too much attention to national politics. The things happening at the local and state lever have way more effects in your life.
As a Social Security recipient whose benefits are being threatened by the GOP in Washington, I feel differently. And ask women how the US Supreme Court has affected their rights and options.

Giving kids tablets.
I dont think giving a child electronics is an issue, I think not monitoring what they are doing is an issue. Schools now have kids working from tablets, what is the difference?
Schools should have firewalls and other measures in place to protect the kids from inappropriate content, at home most parents these days cannot even log in to their router, let alone set a blacklist of sites and services or set up some form of parental control that their kids won't be able to circumvent.
Load More Replies...I gave my 8 year old grandson a tablet that he is only allowed to use for an hour at most for games. If he uses it any longer then it has to be for something educational like math, or learning a new language. The world in now technology driven so you don't want to deprive the completely since their future jobs may very well depend on how well they use/understand technology.
Yep, so you don't have to engage with them and they won't, not now and not later on.
Giving kids tablets doesn't have to be bad. Giving them books is no different. They disappear into the book and don't hear anything you say. The important thing is not the item/device you give them it's how you teach them to use it and the rules you set on it's use.
Load More Replies...I think electronics have a place, but time should be limited and content supervised. Also, people don't like their children to be bored, or make any noise anymore, e.g in shops or restaurants, so they are given tech to shut them up. Rarely do I see kids drawing at a table or just talking to their parents in a trolley. That's why their communication is so bad when they get to school. Also, some children are starting school trying to swipe books, which I find utterly unfathomable (I hardly ever use that word!). (I work in a school)
I thought the heading was about medications like pills. We call them tablets here
It appears jet contrails are missing from the list. Seems people do not understand how engines operate in a cold environment. Therefore, it must be chemicals.
