Sharing a home with someone can be a great way to save money on rent and utilities, but it can also push you to the very edge of your limits.

The subreddit 'Choosing Beggars', a place where people shame those who are being way too picky when asking for things, has plenty of types of recurring characters. There's the shameless parent who uses their child's birthday as leverage for negotiation, the art "critic" who lowballs every piece they get their eyes on, and many, many more.

But among these infamous personas, roommates are arguably one of the most frustrating. Whether it's disagreements over household chores, personal space, or guest policies, they have the ability to quickly become a painful source of stress.

Chances are that if we do not become kinder to one another, there will be many more similar screenshots. American adults are increasingly sharing a home with other adults with whom they are not romantically involved.

This arrangement, known as “doubling up” or shared living, gained notice in the wake of the Great Recession, and the prevalence of shared living has continued to grow since.

I once paid $800/mo to share a living room in a 1 bedroom flat in Santa Monica by the airport. I mean there was another dude renting the living room floor with me, in addition to the leaseholder who had the bedroom. She kept the water heater on "vacation mode" because "too much electricity!" I was young and dumb. When I discovered that you can just live in a van and still go to work everyday, everything changed.

The first parts felt ok-ish. I have moved in with a friend when we were in the last year at uni because we really needed a QUIET place. Nowadays, working people have to share and it's ok to negotiate: This is a quiet place to relax and recharge for people who are not very social or simply drained from their work. But, come on, bowl movement??? Seriously??

This seems like someone who needs therapy not a flatmate. I can’t imagine being so entitled to think that it is ok to trying and dictate someone else’s actions this much. The whole thing is so contradictory as well. Like you have to be eating sophisticated meals but don’t be in the kitchen for too long and you can’t be hanging around the house but this is a home and you aren’t allowed to be a stranger you must socialise ?!

I actually had a roommate like that and after 18 months, I had a whopping case of PTSD from living with someone this controlling, but who refused to tell anyone her rules until they were broken. Nothing was ever good enough. Even the setting on the thermostat was a struggle; I stood my ground and demanded the heat be up at a minimum of 68° during the day and 65° at night whereas she wanted it left at 58°F. Yeah, I really mean fifty-eight degrees. 🥶🧊 Never again! Life is too short.

"This is a home, not a hotel"... With all these crazy rules, you sure it's not an Airbnb?? "I don't want my new flatmate to assume that just because I spend so much time here, it's okay for them to do the same." Why is it okay for YOU, but not anyone else?? Look, IDGAF whose name is on the lease. If I pay RENT, and especially if I also share the bills, it's MY flat, too. My HOME. And I'm going to LIVE in it. I'll stay in it when I want to, as long as I want to. I'll shít as long as I need to, as many times as I need to. I'll watch as much TV as I want. I'll cook whenever the hell I'm hungry. And guess what? I work night shift, so some of that will happen at night. I would always be considerate of any other people I was living with. But there's a HUGE difference in asking/expecting someone to be considerate, and expecting/DEMANDING that they revolve their entire life around YOU, and YOUR preferences. This lunatic doesn't want a flatmate. He wants a doormat, that pays rent. Fúck. THAT.

So, let me sum up. You are allowed to show up and sleep, otherwise it's not your space. Hope the rent reflects the fact you won't have access to the place during work hours, limited access to the kitchen and bathroom, and can't fart too loud lest you draw attention to the fact you exist.

My biggest issue is the free time. "Don't spend a lot of time here" why the f*ck else would I pay rent here if not to spend time here when I don't have plans elsewhere? I could just pay for a cheap hotel if thats what I'm getting. Plus, most TVs now have Bluetooth and Bluetooth headphones are cheap. I have a good pair of US$150 headphones that are Bluetooth and noise cancelling (I used to live in a really loud house, and worked nights, so... yeah). That said, I used to work nights, and I made about $75k a year doing so. I'd happily pay the lions share of rent if it meant *i* got to be this picky towards this new roommate.

This is why this person will probably be living on his own. I wish a m**o would can we say controlling, as long as I pay my rent I will do whatever I want to do respectfully. I will use the restroom, I will talk on my phone, I will cook my food and thoroughly clean up behind myself. I will even buy my own refrigerator which would stay fully stocked in my own room, I will have my own dishes, silverware, plates ,bowls, cups, glasses etc all of which will be kept in my room as well. If a person is controlling like this they need to live on their own. Period.

I'm having a hard time believing that this is real. Not because of the insane level of control this person is trying to hold over other adults but because they claim to be in London but they are writing in American English. Unless they're an American citizen studying abroad. Just a few examples: referring to friends and not "mates" throughout the entire thing, spelling "socialize" rather than "socialise", inserting the very American "gonna", failing to realize that porridge is, in fact, cooked in a pot. It reads as if the person is trying to sound British but missing the mark, repeatedly.

I have 2 jobs, and when I work both I'm out from 730am to 11pm, and I need to sleep by like 1am... freaking people are running the dryer, making noise in the kitchen. All sorts of nonsense right when i need to be going to sleep. I hate it so much and yes I'm definitely looking into renting a new room as soon as I pay down some more credit card debt.

If you are someone who is considerate enough to be able to fit in with the requirements, they probably are genuinely easy going. They might have just had a whole bunch of s****y roomates. It is kinda nice to know upfront that the two people who you would be living with are constrained by the same rules.

I don't see this one as "horrible", just maybe poorly worded and long winded. And a LOT of what they said here sounds like it is based on personal experience. Full disclosure - I am possibly a bit biased here due to having had someone living on my property who was many of these things. Long phone calls on speaker phone / voice that carries. Didn't understand why it was a problem to come into a room where you are already doing something like watching a movie and sit down and start watching youtube videos on speaker phone. Tie up bathroom for long periods when others are waiting. Erratic schedule / sleep hours and didn't get how much the noise they were making bothered others. And so on. And another time in my life I had a room mate who either didn't flush and/or would plug the toilet and walk away expecting me to deal with it. We had to have a conversation about that.

All of the rules in a list makes it seem worse than it is. Individually most of the requirements are really quite fair. I'm seeing all these negative comments, but after finishing the list, it kinda seems like a nice pleasant place to live. You know outright that the two people who you're moving in with are considerate about noise, cleaning, taking too much time in the shared bathroom, and having guests over. It actually sounds pleasant.

Honestly, I dont find many of these out of line. Obviously having to be out of the flat 9-5 every weekday and not being able to 'spend time there' and whatnot are pretty ridiculous. But most everything is just them asking for someone to be courteous and respectful. Sure, they were very specific about those things but they obviously have to be based previous situations theyve dealt with. I'd rather live with someone like this than someone who claims to be "respectful' and ends up being anyhting but.

The 9-5 thing isn't overly unreasonable. It means outright that you have a full time job. Probably demonstrates that you are dedicated enough to keep it, and don't intend on losing it anytime soon. Plus it means that you would be able to afford your third of the rent every month.

Facebook Cb Wants Roommate To Pay More Rent Because She Makes More

Facebook Cb Wants Roommate To Pay More Rent Because She Makes More

ItchyDonkin Report

While the rise in shared living during and immediately after the recession was attributed in large part to a growing number of Millennials moving back in with their parents, the longer-term increase has been partially explained by a different phenomenon: parents moving in with their adult children.

In 2017, for example, nearly 79 million American adults (31.9% of the entire adult population) lived in a shared household. For comparison, in 1995, the earliest year with comparable data, the number stood at just 55 million (28.8%), and in 2004, at the peak of homeownership and before the onset of the home foreclosure crisis, 27.4% of adults shared a household.

The nearly 79 million adults living in a shared household include about 25 million who own or rent the household. An additional 10 million are the spouse or unmarried partner of the head of the household.

Another 40 million, or 16% of all adults, are the “extra adult” in the shared household. This share of living in someone else's household is up from 14% in 1995.

In 2017, just 18% of extra adults lived in a household in which the head was unrelated (typically a housemate or roommate).

Interestingly, living with nonrelatives has become less prevalent since 1995, when 22% of extra adults were doing it.

With so many adults living together, Apartment Guide conducted a survey of over 1,000 Americans to learn what determines a good and bad match.

According to the findings, people who had more than one roomie were less satisfied with their living situations than those with just one. Also:

  • People living with their friends, family (32%), and co-workers were the most likely to be happy with their roommates;
  • People living with an acquaintance were the least satisfied with their living situation;
  • Living with one other roommate who happens to be related to you is the most satisfying roommate situation.

Paying rent (9%), communication (7%), and violating boundaries (7%) were the next biggest issues between roommates.
