30 Terrible Products That Are Still Sold By The Millions, As Shared By This Online Group Puppy mill puppies. Sorry to compare them to a product, but that’s how they’re treated. No one should purchase a puppy from a pet store, EVER. This now extends to online brokerage websites like greenfield and puppyspot. They’re like Amazon, a few clicks and a puppy will be sent to your door, and these puppies are coming from the exact same place as the pet store puppies. Because of people’s need for instant gratification, these facilities with hundreds to thousands of breeding animals persist. They are the best cash crop you could hope for.

Never believe a store who claims they only sell puppies from responsible breeders. No, not even if the owner has visited the breeders and “know” they’re good! By definition a responsible breeder would NEVER send their puppies to a pet store. Even pet stores that claim to only have rescues need to be scrutinized because some mills will use a shell rescue to “puppy launder”. “Licensed and certified breeders” should be a red flag - depending on the state, a breeder only needs to be licensed if they have a large number of dogs, are selling to brokers to go to pet stores, or to people “sight unseen” (online). YMMV depending on the state.

People sometimes justify their purchases as “saving” puppies from a pet store. But that is still investing in the industry and funding their operations by giving them profit. Legislation hasn’t stemmed the tide. Only a loss of profit will make mills move on to another hustle.

So please educate yourself and anyone you know who loves dogs and might ever be tempted to purchase a puppy from a pet store or online. Either adopt from a responsible rescue, or purchase from a responsible breeder.

You can check with stores though - my local pet store works WITH the local rescue centre to as a sort of halfway point for adoption. Store =/= bad automatically. It very much depends on location.

I am not 100% sure about that one. Yes plastic isn't easy to recycle. (Although HDPE (Lids) and PP (bottles) can be recycled quite well. IF you recycle).. but: It is a lot lighter than glass. Less weight means less energy/fuel for transport. And that means less CO2 (for transport). So.... if you look at the facts and add up the numbers (instead of just going: "Plastic is Evil) you might be surprised. Could be that, as enviromental bad as they are, they could still be better than glass

Seriously, how was this ever legal in the first place and why is it still legal?

Edit, apparently mictobeads were mostly banned in the US (where majority of redditors are from) in 2018 (enacted 2015) but I missed that. However, this is not a strict ban as they are still allowed in "non-rinse off" products such as make-up or pillow stuffing and you can order large quantities of them on Amazon. So while this is a step in the right direction, it is certainly not good enough. Furthermore, they should be banned worldwide like CFCs were as their environmental impact is equally as bad.

30 Terrible Products That Are Still Sold By The Millions, As Shared By This Online Group Hartz brand pet flea treatments/medication. It's dangerous and has been the cause of death for many pets. IIRC it's a nerve agent that's supposed to make the pet's blood toxic to fleas.

I used some on my cat once and she started freaking out, then had trouble waking normally (her legs were twitching and kicking, clearly out of her control), and tears of brown thick liquid started streaming down her face. I picked her up and frantically gave her a bath hoping to wash any of the remaining chemicals off the back of her neck before any more of that poison seeped into her skin.

Hartz is made in China, and it is garbage. Don't buy ANYTHING from China meant for consumption or for topical use, for yourself or your pets. There are very minimal regulations regarding quality control, labeling or the use of certain ingredients over there, so you can never be sure of what you're getting.

My 15-year-old cat was acting lethargic, hardly eating, rapidly deteriorating out of nowhere... I thought it was the end. I started preparing myself for a trip to the vet to have him euthanized. Devastated! Suddenly realized the only change was that he'd been wearing a flea collar the past few days. Did some Googling and read HORROR STORIES. I'd never heard about this problem before! Took that thing off him and he returned to his old self within a couple days. How are flea collars even legal?? P.S. My old boy lived for another 3 years. Grateful for the time we had with him.

Never, ever buy a flea collar that says it can last for 3-4 months. It is such a highly concentrated dose of the product, supposedly time released ("Soresto is one in the U.S) I have seen cats get skin lesions from these, suffer seizures, suffer critical asthma or breathing distress. Just too much, too strong. I don't know why they're allowed to be sold.

Yeah, please just buy those things from your vet. Don't use doggo products on cats or the opposite if your vet didn't tell you that's ok. The symptoms described here are neurological, and that's bad. I had to check as this is not known in my area (not completely, I see that some of this brand are, however I never used them in pets luckily). But with parasite treatments is almost always lottery with health / comfort / efficiency. Formula has to change very often in order to work and symptoms can be so mild till they're serious. I had it with bravecto, our 16 yo dog has no problem with it and works great. My then 2 yo developed itch after few applications unfortunately. I don't blame product, can still be good, what pissed me off was veterinarian saying I'm wrong when I said I had complain about this (that time bravecto was still in testing and they were supposed collect and investigate all feedback!). I guess it's pharmaceutical industry as for people too...

Yup. Used it on my cat and she developed a severe, painful rash and all her fur across the back of her neck and shoulders fell out. Thank goodness she's okay and still going strong seven years later, but man, was I PISSED at the brand. Took the remainder back to the pet store and they gave me a full refund. I showed them the photos I took of my cat and they were horrified and agreed to remove the product from their shelves. I also wrote the company and shared the photos along with the effects the product had on my cat. Never ever heard back from them. Piece of sh*t brand and products. Now, I only get flea and worm treatments for my furkids from their vet.

I used this on my cat - She got scabby skin, her fur fell out and she was so sick. Luckily I stopped it soon enough that she recovered. I now only use vet recommended products and then only when she actually has fleas on her (we sometimes get them from outside - I spray the perimeter for them now).

Flea collars for dogs should never touch a cat or get near them. They are deadly for cats. They have no way of processing the poison. They get neurological damage and can die. Take them to the vet immediately if something happens and they get wobbly, have spasms and seizures. Do not use this poison. Especially if you have a dog and a cat, PLEASE do not put a collar on your dog. My cat died.

Use diatomaceous earth, which is a naturally occurring sand extracted from the earth. It consists of microscopic skeletons of algae — known as diatoms — that have fossilized over millions of years (1). Very safe for pets and you can use it around the yard and house, too, for killing crawling insects.

Years ago we had several consecutive bouts of head lice in our household and were out of lice shampoo, so one day, in a pinch, my partner suggested I use flea shampoo for pets instead. Said she'd done it before. I doubted the efficacy, questioned her sanity and resisted, but ultimately had little choice so gave it a try. It was a very common brand - I don't remember which, but was advertised on TV a lot at the time and was one of maybe two major brands that supermarkets generally stocked. Burned like nothing I've felt before. I've been maced before, but this s**t was way, way worse than that. My scalp was burning furiously, tingling, coolish like menthol, and kind of numb. It was excruciating and kind of scary. I seriously thought I'd done some damage. And I only had it on my scalp. I can only imagine being immersed in it while the head of my pack poured it over me again and again while producing calm utterances... I'm now very skeptical of such things. Excluding considerations of diet and such, if we wouldn't use it ourselves then why do we use it on animals? I'm very hesitant to use anything that is intended to be used this way that doesn't come with a clear and understandable explanation, now. If there is no explanation, then no thanks. I use such things because I care, not to be a casual sadist.

Hard to fact check a personal story. The only adverse reactions I’m aware of are improper use of said product (dog collar used on a cat for example or multiple treatments used simultaneously). I’ve used many different flea treatment brands throughout my history of owning & fostering over 20 cats (kitten through seniors). Never has any brand caused problems. All I can say is read the instructions and do research on the active ingredients on various brands. If the numbers and ingredients match for species and age groups then one brand is not superior or less dangerous than another. (Think brand name vs generic for your own meds—same principle applies to pet over the counter stuff too)

These products are made for dogs and dogs only. It's said on the boxes: only for dogs. Why would you use a dog product on a cat? Some flea and tick repellents are based on chrysanthemum - which is highly poisonous for cats. That's why you never use repellents made for dogs on a cat.

There is absolutely no reason to have cable anymore. I have Netflix, Disney+, Amazon prime, Hulu and Funimation subscriptions and all of them combined cost a fraction what cable does,. Include limitless on demand content (much of which is better than anything on cable) and without 30% of the air time being commercials. Cable is dead. It died a horrible and well disserved death and it will not be missed.
