A 16-year-old Tennessee girl has been criminally charged after she ran onto a football field and tackled a 13-year-old player during a middle school game.

The incident quickly went viral, but the teenager now said there was more behind her decision than simply wanting to start a fight.

Addison Hunnicutt said she jumped onto the field because she believed another player was attacking her younger brother.

The incident happened on Tuesday, August 18, during a game between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School at Franklin County High School in Winchester, Tennessee.

According to authorities, South Middle School had just scored a touchdown and an extra point when a scuffle broke out between two players.

Investigators said Hunnicutt then ran onto the field and went toward a 13-year-old South Middle School player who had been involved in the scuffle. She tackled him to the ground before pushing him back down when he tried to get up.

School resource officers met Hunnicutt as she left the field. Officials then cleared the field, and the game ended early.

Hunnicutt was released to her parents, who were at the game. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office later charged her with as*ault and disorderly conduct.

Hunnicutt has since explained that she believed her brother was being treated unfairly during the game.

She said she saw another player grab her brother’s face mask and spin him around. She also claimed her brother was hit in the ribs.

“That’s when I started to be like, no, I’m done watching this,” Hunnicutt told NewsChannel 5.

“I wasn’t going after this kid just to go after him. That wasn’t my intention at all,” she said.

For Hunnicutt, the situation had become about protecting her younger brother.

“Seeing what they were doing to him and no one stopping it, that kind of made me the last choice,” she explained. “Somebody has to stop this.”

Her mother, Elizabeth Chumbley, said she did not approve of her daughter’s decision to enter the field. However, she also said she understood why Hunnicutt reacted after seeing her son on the ground.

“I made sure she understood quickly that her behavior was inappropriate, and you should not have jumped over the fence,” Chumbley told WTVF.

“But I’m seeing my son on the ground being attacked. This wasn’t just a football play. This is him on the ground being physically attacked by this other player.”

Alongside the criminal charges, the teen was also banned from school properties for life

Franklin County Schools banned her from all district properties for life following the incident.

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association also banned her from attending Cornersville Middle School home and away athletic events for one year.

School officials praised their staff, coaches, and school resources officers for how they handled the situation. The school also said it would add additional security measures at future games.

Meanwhile, the father of the 13-year-old player who was tackled has defended his son.

A man identifying himself as the boy’s father, Brandon Taylor, wrote on Facebook that his son had shown restraint during the incident.

“He had every reason to be angry, yet he still showed restraint,” Taylor wrote.

He also said his son did not deserve what happened to him.

“He did not deserve to be tackled, pushed, or humiliated on the field,” he wrote. “He is a 13-year-old child, and I will always stand up for him and protect him.”

As soon as the case went viral, people online began debating Hunnicutt’s actions

“The family should press charges against her. She should have never run on the field where they were playing football. So I would charge her.”

Others think the criminal charges are excessive considering how quickly the incident happened.

“I feel as if criminal charges are a bit much in this case,” one person wrote.

Another added, “There’s worse fights inside schools, and it’s a 3-day suspension.”

One commenter even argued that the situation should not ruin the teenager’s future.

“Don’t ruin a promising future by pressing charges for like, 2 minutes of action, bro.”

The biggest debate centered on whether Hunnicutt’s actions should be seen as an understandable attempt to protect her brother or as an unacceptable attack on another child.

One commenter joked about the unusual family dynamic, writing, “Brother should take ballet and let his sister join the team!!”

Another person sarcastically suggested, “The school needs to give his spot on the team to her.”

“Her poor brother will be bullied over that for the rest of his school life,” one commenter wrote. “Boys are different than girls. He has to fight his own fights.”

At the same time, some viewers felt the teenager’s actions should be viewed in the context of what she believed she had witnessed.

“Don’t ruin a promising future by pressing charges for like, 2 minutes of action, bro,” another person wrote.

“We need to hold people accountable,” wrote one netizen

No-one's suggesting she be charged as an adult. She'll get some sort of order that places restrictions on what she can do and where she can go, for a while. When she turns 18 the record gets sealed. Seems appropriate to me.

She did overreact. It's not like her brother was being ganged up on and attacked. However, the dad getting upset that his son was tackled... they're playing American "football". What did he think was going to happen? Sure it's an unexpected source at an unpredictable time, but that kid is fully prepared for the event. Although now this story has gone viral it'll probably attract the attention of the new Mr. Taylor Swift and he'll do something to make people think he's still decent and down-to-earth, despite shutting down a section of New York just for his wedding.

She should have never set foot on the field. What exactly was the kid doing? Because it looked like he was just standing there. If her brother was being harassed that's a job for the coaches and refs. I'm sure he's not happy with what she did either. Let him handle his own battles . It's football - he's going to get knocked down! She clearly needs some help with her self control. That was an extreme overreaction.
