The world around us is a fascinating place. However, many of us are too busy to notice a lot of interesting and peculiar details. If we were to get into the habit of slowing down and taking a look around, we might enjoy our day-to-day lives far more.

That’s where the popular ‘Stranger Things in Stunning World’ Facebook group comes in. The members of this online community share some of the most impressive things that they’ve come across, from wholesome images and acts of kindness to strange events that might change your perspective.

Bored Panda got in touch with Jodi Wellman, MAPP, who shed some light on why we rush so much in life and what we can do to be more present and notice our surroundings more. Wellman is a speaker, author, and leadership coach, as well as the founder of the ‘Four Thousand Mondays’ project. You’ll find the thoughts she shared with us below.

According to Wellman, people value productivity and efficiency. This “contributes to the ‘go go go-ness’ of our days,” she told Bored Panda via email.

“But I think many of us are caught up in what’s known as an existential vacuum, which is characterized by a nagging sense of meaninglessness in life. When we’re feeling unfulfilled in life, we get pretty savvy at filling the void with manufactured busy work,” the founder of the ‘Four Thousand Mondays’ project said.

It isn't getting publicity because it's about native Americans, and America tries very hard to pretend that they don't exist so that they don't have to feel bad about exterminating so many of them, and discriminating against the rest

It seems like the latest push to pretend they don't exist comes from the Left, removing all traces of Indians from pop culture. When I was growing up, kids all wanted to be Indians. Yeah, it was a romanticized version of Indians: living in tipis despite the fact we all knew local Indians lived in wigwams. Canoeing. Making mocassins. Playing lacrosse. Painting our faces with warpaint. Pretending we were hunting with bows and arrows. I remember one friend in college was amazed that "Thanksgiving" was about thanking God, not thanking Indians, because it was all about Indians. The Boy Scouts could've been named "learn to live like an Indian." Now, that's all "culturally insensitive." So all anyone knows about Indians anymore is casinos and tax-free cigarettes. At least so many placenames are still Indian; it's hard to completely lose the sense that you're living on Indian land when your town or state has an Indian name (as 27 states do).

I had the privilege of meeting the chief/ spiritual leader of the Lakota tribe. Chief Looking Horse is a very kind and wise man. I smoked out of their peace pipe. It was so old sitting bull probably smoked out of it. White Buffalo woman came down from heaven and gifted it to the people.

“We might want to be suspicious of the purpose task-rushing is serving for us and start connecting to a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in life.”

Wellman noted that, from her perspective, remembering that we’re all going to die can help us be more present in the here and now.

“We are temporary, finite, ‘limited time only!’ This ancient practice known as memento mori works because it’s only when we contemplate our mortality that we snap to attention and realize all we have in this momentary existence is This Moment,” she explained to Bored Panda.

“I want everyone to count their Mondays; we get about 4,000 on average, and tuning into however many we have left can open our eyes up to what matters, what’s special right here and right now.”

Call me crazy, and I don't care, but I had a back and forth "conversation" with two crows in my yard for about 5 minutes. They noticed me and would "caw" at me. I made the noise back and they responded. This went back and forth for a good 5 minutes and I thought it was amazing. 😂 I give them good bird seed and scraps of food they like.

If I remember the story correctly, it was actually the male crow with the broken beak. His name was George, hers was Mabel. George past away in 2017. Mabel eventually found a new mate. It appears that Mabel most likely passed away as well in 2023. See this site for more on them both: https://urbannature.blog/2020/02/12/george-and-mabel-a-love-story/

Animals are very aware of life and death. I had a horse, years ago, that was standing still in a field for far too long (horse owners will know what I'm talking about). I went out to check him, pushed on his hip to move him, no go. Pushed his shoulder, still not moving. I looked down under his belly in the long grass and saw a tiny kitten there. Got the kitty and he moved off happily. But he simply refused to move knowing he might hurt kitty. He was a kind companion.

I have adopted older shelter pets in the past, and I will continue to do so in the future. Everyone goes for the babies, but older pets have so much to offer. They have usually passed all the chewing/ scratching, bad behavior phases that comes with babies, and they have so much good and love to give. 🥰

Telling ourselves to slow down to appreciate life more is easier said than done. However, if we make the change, we potentially avoid a lot of stress. Physician Susan Biali Haas, M.D., has a range of strategies for people to try to help them stop rushing so much and slow down. She notes that the first step is becoming aware that you’re in the habit of rushing in the first place.

“When you catch yourself doing it, ask yourself if it’s really necessary. Are the extra seconds or minutes that you might gain really worth all the tension and stress?” the physician writes on Psychology Today that, most often, it’s not worth rushing about everywhere. The next step is to slow down your pace consciously.

Something that saps your energy and attention is multi-tasking. Research shows that it doesn’t really work like you hope it does, and it only scatters your focus and leaves you exhausted. Whenever you can, try to focus on a single task at a time. Fully immerse yourself in it, and then move on to the next one. If you’re doing a bit of everything, you’re only unnecessarily stretching yourself thin.

I think this is so cool, and they must both be so proud. I always wanted to be a pilot for my dad, but it didn't work out. I got busy with life and family, and he died much younger than anyone knew. He had a private pilot's license, and my childhood was filled with wonderful memories of flying with dad. The man loved planes like no other. He would go to airports just to watch airplanes take off and land. He attended every air show he could. He had more pictures of airplanes than he did his kids, but we knew we were loved. 😂

Dr. Biali Haas also urges people to focus on being present, wherever they might be and whatever they’re doing. For instance, if you’re speaking to someone, be fully engaged in the conversation. Don’t keep picking up your phone to check for emails or messages. Similarly, if you’re out for a walk, bring your attention to your surroundings instead of worrying about work and family problems.

I did this with my front door. A bird decided to nest in a wreath I had on my front door, so I didn't use my front door for a couple of months. When they were gone, the smell was awful, and the wreath had to be thrown out, and the whole door scrubbed, but at least the birds made it. I wasn't going to bother them.

I'd unfortunately be wary... The Roma in Europe usually use this as a trick, they hand you a rose then chase you for money and refuse to take the rose back because you "bought" it but insist on money. They might even pickpocket you. Many a kind gesture has been ruined by greedy evil little people. I must add, I'm not generalizing Roma, I know quite a number of decent ones but there are bad apples among all of us

I wouldn't generalise that way about the homeless. A lot of mental illnesses, addictions or plain bad luck can land you on the streets, but calling them all innocent and sweet seems delusional.

In the meantime, it’s up to us to be on the lookout for opportunities to help others and be kind and generous. As we’ve recently written on Bored Panda, it’s through consistent action, not just our words, that we can spread kindness. Not only that, but we should all strive to lead by example. It’s one thing to tell someone they should be kinder. It’s another to embody our own values and inspire others with our actions.

These horses are now so inbred that it is questionable as to whether it is ethical to breed them at all. In my opinion, the stud books should be opened up, meaning that horses from other breeds would be allowed to be introduced to the bloodline to increase the genetic diversity. Otherwise it is onky a matter of a few generations before these disappear completely.

I was suspicious of that as soon as I saw the picture. Something like that would have to be heavily selected for, much like extreme miniature breeds (of any species). Leading to inbreeding and and potentially some nasty recessive mutations showing up.

Being kind and compassionate doesn’t mean that we have to move metaphorical mountains. If you’re not used to being altruistic, you should focus on tiny acts of kindness, instead of trying to do something that’s overwhelming and exhausting. For instance, smiling at someone, saying ‘hello,’ thanking them, and helping them with their luggage are all ways that you can spread kindness. If you’re ever in doubt, you can simply walk up to someone who seems to be struggling and gently ask them if they’d like a hand.

My mum volunteers at a 'breakfast club' at a local primary school (Australia) where they serve cereal, toast, milo/hot chocolate and fruit cups. They aren't sure how much longer they can run it though, as one of the two grant they get every year is not going to be renewed, something about only being eligible for 4 years or something.

Cornwall is an amazing place. If anyone not from the UK is planning on visiting, go to Cornwall. It's unlike anywhere else in England and I have to say, my favourite place. Loads of artists down there. Narrow roads and amazing coves and beaches to be discovered. Have a Cornish pasty, maybe at the Lizard (Lizard Point, the most southerly point in Britain). It all very rural and chilled but if you want a bit more action then go to Newquay on the north coast or Helston for the kids who want a theme park (don't expect Disneyland though!) And if you find bad weather one day then switch to the other coast, north or south, you can sometimes get better weather when you do that.

Rhododendrons have become a terrible blight in some parts of Britain. They are invasive and outcompete native species because they produce a toxin that spreads from the roots into the soil and kills any competitors. Hundreds of volunteers spend thousands of hours every year removing these plants in an attempt to restore our ancient landscapes.

Tiday I learned that our plastic recycling factories in the Netherlands will most likely need to shut down. The idea was, to reduce plastic waste, to return it to its granulate form and use it for making new bottles etc. The technique works well after years of research. Unfortunately the US and China sell new plastic for a fraction of the price of recycled one. This will increase plastic waste and create huge waste deposit problems.

This is exactly what happens on my property, no joke! Starting out as tiny fawns, does will drop their babies off in one of the yards for at least half a day and go forage. There's a lot of trees and bushes so the babies stay shaded from the sun and the eagles (both the raptors and the band). As they get older, they still like to visit our house because they know they can graze and be left alone. I started naming them: I have The Twins, Smoochy, and Mange-o.

This is not a scientific fact. There was a piece of footage used in a BBC documentary that showed this behaviour, and this explanation was the one given for some reason. Scientists believe that is exceedingly unlikely that this is correct, and that the young male dolphins were just mucking about with something they found interesting.

I have... questions. Five is common? How do the ewes cope? They don't have the udder capacity - even triplets usually have to be split up and fostered onto a mother with a stillborn lamb

    LakotaWolf (she/her)
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The Lleyn ewe is said to produce "200% lambs" - whatever that means - but you're correct -sheep usually only have two teats. So if an ewe gives birth to five, or god forbid seven lambs, there's not even going to be enough milk production for those lambs, even if the shepherd managed the lambs/swapped them in and out to nurse. Of course all the extra lambs can be bottle-fed, but if five lambs are COMMON in a flock, the amount of work (and supplied milk) that the flock owners would have to put in to nurse ALL those extra lambs seems like it might not be worth the effort?

Dedicated by the Greeks of Pontos to Holly Mary, "Sou Melá" derives its name from their dialect, meaning "in to Melá," named after the cliff. Once a thriving Greek monastery, it fell victim to the Pontiac-Greek Genocide of Minor Asia by the Turks in 1922. Today, it stands as a UNESCO heritage site.

Chimps are incredibly violent, territorial and brutal in the wild... They have an image as placid peaceful creatures but if provoked they will eat your face off... It literally happened to some lady who's friend had one as a pet and it became startled...

Lower ranking chimps will often have large areas of hair missing, this is because they allow themselves to be groomed by other, higher ranking chimps. Grooming is a social activity and it increases the bond between the troop.

That's easy for people who live together. I know who's in the room just by the way they walk. But proving you're not the father of the kid would be harder.
