Barely eight years ago, most Americans believed that being gay is "just the way some choose to live." You know, like choosing your diet or hairdo. And while the tide has shifted, with society being more accepting, more folks are coming out as LGBTQ+ than ever before - some chose to and still do forget that it's as real as global warming or Christmas.
The subreddit Sappho And Her Friend, then, is a godsend which sheds light on cringeworthy instances of LGBTQ+ erasure from academia, pop culture and real life. Who knew that straight people completely ignoring the fact that LGBTQ+ is a thing can be so absurdly amusing.

What To Call Your Straight Aunt's Husband
Ohhh I've been there. When I was a kid my mom mentioned my girlfriend as my "friend," too. I brought my long term girlfriend to my paternal relatives' for Xmas one year and everyone told my 85 year old great grandma that she was my friend and told me that she wouldn't understand what I meant by girlfriend. Psshh.
How annoying for you. I'm always blown away by this idea that older folks are naive. You live to be 85 chances are good you met a few people who were not straight... maybe she wasn't straight and would be thrilled to meet your girlfriend and have her actually called your girlfriend.

Load More Replies...In a world that claims progress and inclusivity, it is disheartening to witness the persistent shadows of prejudice cast upon the LGBTQ+ community. From the humblest corners of society to the grand stage of global politics, there exists a myriad of reasons, however wrong, why some individuals remain staunchly ignorant when it comes to accepting and embracing diverse sexual orientations and gender fluidity.
While significant progress has been made over the years, including a growing number of individuals, particularly Gen Z, feeling more comfortable and open about their LGBTQIA+ identities, there remains much work to be done. Unfortunately, even during Pride Month, which spans the entire month of June, incidents like the recent vandalism of the LGBTQIA+ community's flags at Stonewall National Monument in New York City, the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement, serve as a reminder that challenges persist.

"Pride Month — and the pride parades — continue to be deeply important in the continued solidarity, fight for human rights, and visibility of the LGBTQI+ community. Additionally, and equally important, is the label 'pride'," Samantha Stein, a licensed psychologist based in San Francisco, told Bored Panda in an email. In 2019, Pride celebrations in San Francisco included 289 parade contingents and held "the largest gathering of LGBTQ+ people and allies in the nation."
"Over the years, it has continued to increase in size and scope, and I haven't seen or heard of any displays of prejudice there since the 1990s," Stein said. "In some ways, it has lost some of its original power: many of the young people from the Bay Area who attend are not aware of the history and courage of the original PRIDE celebrations. That said, we can view that as a positive change since they haven't had to be!"

June, for those of you who don't know, is a month of celebration that aligns with a significant event in the history of the Gay Liberation Movement known as the Stonewall Uprising. In the early hours of June 28th, 1969, a gay bar called 'The Stonewall Inn' in New York City's West Village was targeted by a police raid. Such raids were common at the time, but on this particular occasion, the patrons of the bar resisted and fought back, leading to what became known as the Stonewall Riots. These protests continued for several days.

Her “Friend “
I have a picture of myself and a friend that could be very questionable if others were unaware of the context. We were giving him a hard time about his gf and him being connected at the hip and I jumped on his lap and said"love me, you can never get rid of me", and another friend snapped a picture just as I was puckering up. A second later he pushed me off and I hit the floor. But for one moment in time we look like a playful couple.
Awww, this is such a beautiful and sweet photograph. I hope that Aunty Mary and her “friend” had a happy a wonderful life together.
In those days they couldn't afford to be out. Quotes & an uspoken understanding ftw.
Recognizing its historical significance, the city of New York designated the Stonewall Inn as a historic landmark in 2015, and it was further honored as a national monument by President Barack Obama in 2016. This June marks the 53rd anniversary of the first Pride parade, which took place in 1970, a year after the uprising at Stonewall.

If your job is selling bride dresses, you can't be that idiot.
To be fair, some people get offended when you assume they're gay, so there's no winning here (although the vendor could definitely have been less assuming here)
Wait. So to avoid potentially offending a breeder, the vendor who IS aware of queer couples is supposed to offend them & assume they’re straight best friends??? Literally the f*****g problem we face every day. Don’t you think we’re constantly offended having our identity erased every single day of our lives??? But god forbid you possibly offend the straights? You error on the side of the most logical assumption without the bias rather than perpetuate the bigotry and homophobia.

We used to have coded objects to signal whether a woman was "taken" or not. Seems like we need coded objects to signal whether people are looking for men, women, both, or asexual. I guess we sort of had that for men wearing one earring on left for straight or right for gay. My coworker used to joke that his wearing two earring meant he was bi... at least, I think he was joking. We need an equivalent system for women. Gay men came up with a quite elaborate hanky system to signal sexual preferences. The problem is that nobody that isn't gay knows the signals, although I usually have a pretty good idea when gay men are hitting on me.
I got hit on like this. I was drunk and said, “thanks girl!” I’m not gay, just really really vain.
"Regrettably, prejudice, oppression, violence, and even loss of life persist as harsh realities for individuals within the LGBTQI+ community, both in the United States and worldwide. Alarmingly, numerous states in the US are enacting legislation that actively undermines the rights of these individuals," said Stein.

And once all the humans are dead, who will be left to care? There will be some sad pets or zoo animals for a few years, but they will die off, and humans will be forgotten. So what? Are most of us too egotistical to accept extinction of our species? I am just unable to relate because, while I like being around children, I have never felt any desire to reproduce? Is there some biological emotional reaction I am missing that leads people to believe human extinction would be a problem? Because it would really do more good than harm.
We have evolved in the ways that are beneficial to our species continued survival, so it makes sense that part of that would be wanting the species to survive

And They Were “Color Enthusiasts”
I like to wear rainbow colors and bright colors in general, just because they're pretty. I'm cis-hetero btw, but I don't mind being mistaken as LGBTQ+
Many people wear rainbow items that are not lgbtq. It's not like we own rainbows? Sounds like she was just trying to make conversation.
I am straight, been married to a beautiful woman for quite a while. I wear whatever the f*** I want - bow-ties, rainbow ties, waistcoats, shirts with flowers on. When people first meet me, on my own, they make the assumption I am gay. I love their treading on egg-shells for the first few days...
I have no problem with gay people but when they reduce their personality only to 'i'm gay ' and nothing more, this starts to p**s me off. Why should people assume that if you wear rainbow color this automatically means you're gay? If you're straight you're not allowed to wear them or what?

"For a group of people who are told continuously — through laws, religions, media, bullying, and directly — that LBTQI+ people are less-than or should not exist," Stein explained, "it is deeply psychologically important that there be counter-messaging."
She argues that this continuous messaging of inferiority often takes a toll on their mental well-being and can result in profound consequences such as mental illness, addiction, isolation, and even loss of life. "People fear and hate what they are taught to fear and hate, and they often fear what's unfamiliar."

I take a break from the gay between 11pm and 8am, just a regular tired, coffee driven woman living with my galpal during those hours.
TBH, at 6:30 in the morning my coffee hasn’t kicked in and cleared the fuzz out of my brain. I probably wouldn’t have noticed the wedding rings either—-or much of anything else, for that matter. I probably would’ve just babbled something sleepily and incoherently, then handed them whatever I was supposed to hand them (badges, passes, schedule, whatever).
Hey, I, a LESBIAN, was at PRIDE LAST WEEKEND with my GIRLFRIEND OF NEARLY FIVE YEARS, and I was surprised when a woman there mentioned her wife. In my defence, she was there running a booth with my straight grandmother for a club of which my straight father also used to be a member, so I forgot they were token straights and that it wasn't just an ally club.
A was asked surprisingly often whether my wife is my sister, since people saw some resemblance. Looking at happy couples I know, I tend to agree. So, if asked whether you are sisters, I'd say, don't think of it as a cringe mistake, but as good omen.

Then there was the idea in ancient Greece (and maybe Rome) that "Women were for bearing children, Men were for companionship/love."
Apparently, according to google, Achilles and Patroclus were platonic friends. And that Achilles was straight. And wikipedia said they both were lovers. I'm thinking lovers. What about you guys?
I think google and wikipedia may not be your best sources in this case. I'd say: read Homer's Illias, and decide for yourself! Ps: I would definitely go for lovers in this case.

The Opposite Of Erasure, For Once!
Based on sources closest to her time period Sappho was not a lesbian in the way we use the term today to mean women who are only attracted to women. The reputation of women from Lesbos was actually that they were notorious chasers of men and the ancient Greek verb associated with being from Lesbos was to give blow jobs. Sappho's individual reputation during the classical Greek period and afterward was actually for being a sex crazed man chaser. Without a doubt she wrote romantic poetry(lyrics) about women and while nobody can say for certain her sexuality is more likely to be something akin to bisexual or pansexual than exclusively attracted to women.

Load More Replies...Lesbians aren't mentioned in the original divorce bill as Queen Victoria didn't believe such a thing could happen. Therefore 2 women living together don't get their wages merged for child support unlike a man and a woman - or 2 men - even though it was illegal at the time.
the fact that the probably only men didnt know how to women could have sex is kinda funny to me.. although i grew up with the internet so i guess its easy to make fun of peoples ignorance in the past
I spent my formative years without the Internet. I'm straight, but it seemed pretty clear to me. But then again, I'm also female, so I think it was a matter of "well, this feels good so that must be how it works."

Ever get the "but you're going to make your son gay?" comment? Friend of mine had to point out that she was raised by straight parents and turned out gay.

To be fair it can be confusing to a kid when the mom genuinely called the gf a friend. Children tend to take things very literal. When I was 13 I still had trouble understanding sarcasm. (Yes. I was definitely one of the popular kids...)

Oh, boy... Anyway, there were much more "trading" in the train station in my city when bathroom were free. I remember being 18-19 yo and old, creepy men approaching me while using the bathroom. Now, for €1 you have a piece of heaven for yourself.
Thank you, Jean Drapeau. Instead of making public toilets free, thus cancelling out the "pay for space, expectation of privacy" argument, he just had them all removed back in the 1960s and 1970s. So now there are no public toilets in parks or metro stations or train stations, and you have go wandering around trying to find one. It's easy-ish if you live here and you now where to find them, but tourists must be constantly frustrated.

I remember when one of my grandmas was still alive, back in the 90, she had very strong opinions about gay people. Like very homophobic opinions. I'm not gay, but one of my best friends was (is). He was very, very openly and obviously gay. But my grandma never picked up any clue. She once asked my mom "what would you think If your son was friends with *gasp* a gay man!?" while discussing homosexuality. My mom and I looked at each other in confusion, but told her nothing to not make things awkward when my friend was around. In her defense, I have to say that my grandma was also very dumb.
I guess the girl has clearly seen Sense8 and you two reminded her of Lito and Hernando and she wanted to be Daniela? Or *looking at this thread* maybe she did totally forget homosexuality exists irl.

How Could The Artist Have Seen This Naked Man? How?
Classically trained painters did nothing but study nudes and life drawing nudes for years. When you go far enough back (I assume way pre-Caillebotte but I don't know) women weren't even allowed (or were discouraged) to be the models (Hence why Michelangelo's women tend to be very jacked and masculine). The whole premise of the label is rather shockingly naive, at best.
Author Of The Book Behind A New Bbc Drama
This is actually funny. In the book he doesn't make it clear whether his partner is male or female, you could read it either way. This person clearly assumed the partner was female. However, if you read any interviews with the author, or articles about him, he makes it quite clear that he's gay.
In the book it is made clear right at the end. However the book isn't about his personal relationships, but his professional ones. In the drama, they did bring in a lot of stuff that simply wasn't covered in the books diary format. That's something you often see when turning a book into a drama, they add dramatic stuff!

But honest mistakes are kinda the point. It means that queer invisibility & erasure exist in a hetero dominant society that even those with the best intention “forget” (in the context of this topic) rather than question the possibilities. It was also a common form of erasure of interracial couples decades ago and is still a form of marginalization for both. It shouldn’t have to be that the assumption (forgetting queers exist) of heterosexuality is the default when one sees a conflicting circumstance. Two women in matching dresses and bouquets getting photos together before a wedding ceremony: they’re EITHER marrying each other or having a double wedding. That’s a big part of breaking down the institutionalized part of homophobia. Not assuming gay or or straight, but assuming possibility when the “conflict circumstance” presents itself. A lesbian wedding may not be the default, but should have been a ***consideration**

I know Cara's dated women but I have to admit I don't think she ever dated Rihanna or Kim K (not sure who that is in the centre). So I think maybe the caption is half right here.
Agree about Rihanna and Kim K. I think that might be Paris Jackson in the middle. And they've sparked dating rumors for years but claimed to be only friends even though they've been caught kissing. Although it's worth pointing out FWBs exist as does trying something romantically that ends up going nowhere. Also Cara has admitted that a lot of her handsy or crazy behavior over the years is the result of not being sober. So there's a lot going on.

Is It Straight For A Woman To Have Crushes On Women?
On one hand, it's true that teenagers can have (and have) moments of uncertainty. On the other hand, your role is being an adult who cares, gives support, love and guidance. Maybe she actually doesn't know what she wants, or what she is... This was your moment to say "I just want you to be happy and a good person, and you to know that I will always be on your side". And you missed that magical moment. You should run a little to take this train, since you're absolutely on time, just run!
This parent doesn’t sound like an a*****e, she just sounds like someone trying to navigate a sensitive and confusing topic. And she is reaching out for guidance. My son came out to me as gay at 12. We just shrugged and said “Cool—we love you and thanks for the heads up.” But the whole time inside my head I was screaming, “How do you know? You are 12!” A year later he told me he was bi. Again, our response was “Ok!” And again in my head I’m thinking, “WTF I can’t keep up.” He just turned 14 and let me know he is in fact, not gay, nor was he bi. 🤦♀️🤷♀️ Same response, “Oh—ok. We love you!” And my internal dialog is, again, “Child WTF make up your mind.” And at the same time reflecting and obsessing on whether I had screwed up some how. Luckily I kept my mouth shut. But for even the most “woke” parent it is hard to navigate. And if a parent can ask for help, or ask someone if they made a mistake handling when a child comes , then how is anyone supposed to learn?
you should be glad that he is so openly telling you. i know i was/am confused and i never was confortable telling anyone in reallife
Load More Replies...When you're in the closet about being bi. Being bisexual doesn't mean your sexual attraction has to be 50/50 split or if you are with a woman you will miss the d, or making out with girls/crushing on girls in your youth is just practice until you're ready for the ReAL tHiNg.... And some bisexuals are sexually attracted to more than one gender but they have a romantic preference for a specific gender.
My daughter came out to me as bi at 13. She’s nearly 16 and has been with her girlfriend for a year or so. We totally embrace it. Her girlfriends parents are super religious and said they would pray the gay away at first, but still accepted it and aren’t nasty to them. Just recently, her mom went to Target and bought them some Pride items ❤️ so I think she’s coming around. It’s so lovely to see.
It's okay to not know. And she is 15, after all. If I had a kid, I feel like I'd also be hesitant to go along with anything, just because I'm responsible for her emotional well-being, you know? What if it turns out she's something else, and she just doesn't know it yet? I feel that treating her as if she's a (lesbian), no questions asked, might inhibit her ability to explore that. I wouldn't want to accidentally screw her up
But would you do that if she told you she was straight?
Load More Replies...I knew I was bisexual at 15 and that hasn't changed in 30 years but sexuality can be fluid and that's normal or it can be that someone discovers a description that fits them better as time goes on, like many of my bi friends who found a better fit with the pansexual term. Regardless just supporting your kid where they're at is the most important thing. They're already doing a lot of scary questioning, they don't need you questioning them too.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t view being LGBTQIA+ as “a thing.” We didn’t choose our sexual identities or gender identities— it is totally biological. I will always be queer. I think the moment we are treated like actual human beings, when there’s an end to homophobia and transphobia, and our rights aren’ being taken away—that’s when. I think people both within and out of the community need to support each other if this is to happen.

I find it amusing that I have a sort of opposite story despite my friends and I being all some form of queer. My best friend has been in my life since first grade so to say we know each other well is a bit of an understatement. She's gay/sapphic (maybe questioning?) and I'm aroace-ish/questioning/maybe sapphic. She had a girlfriend last year but is not dating now. So pretty much she and I hang out all the time and especially during the school year. We shared an art class and lunch so we'd be seen together a lot, and by ourselves we're both quiet and unassuming. We were together enough that one of her friends (but not really mine) thought we were dating. Besides that, we've been assumed to be sisters (don't look much alike) and cousins (again, don't look much alike), but really, we are just REALLY good friends.
