30 Wholesome Cartoons Featuring Social Justice Themes By Henry James Garrett
Interview With ArtistSome artists choose to use their talent and creativity to contribute to larger causes, focusing their work on common social issues. There's nothing wrong with dedicating their crafts to something as light-hearted as humor, as everyone needs it from time to time! Then there's a third group of creative minds, attempting to combine both approaches to create something light in form yet with deeper meaning, discussing important matters in a lighthearted way to make them more approachable to a wider audience.
Today, we're excited to introduce you to the work of Henry James Garrett, a writer, illustrator, and the creator of the wildly popular Instagram account formerly known as Drawings of Dogs, now simply named after him. Through his heartwarming drawings featuring animals and everyday objects, the artist focuses on expressing thoughtful ideas about wellness, social justice, equality, LGBT identity, and more.

Too bad humans gave so many descendants so many genetic problems that make their lives painful or cumbersome.
That is true, also if drawing is acurate he's just a result of multiple cross breading of dogs some mad scientist though looked funny.. so no pack for them... Ever ... New breed ...
Bored Panda reached out to Henry to find out more about his work. We were wondering what inspired the artist to start creating his heartwarming cartoons. The illustrator shared with us: “I began creating comics in earnest when I dropped out of academic philosophy due to anxiety. I wanted a way to talk about morality - what doing the right thing consists of, and why we don't always do it - that was more accessible, had a wider reach, and was more likely to connect with people emotionally; in my drawings, I've found just that.”
Yeah, most dogs. One of mine, if I sneeze, he is stares into my soul to find the devil. If my partner sneezes, he races across the house barking like he is chasing the hounds of hell. We love him. He's like a cat dog.
So little you know about dogs .. think of police dogs only ... And them military trained ones ... And imagine yourself being chased by one... You will pee and s**t yourself if 1 large dog will run by you without minding your presence ... 🤣🤦🏻♂️
More dogs p**s on the crocuses though, so just take it all in the round!
There is no ‘lying’ when someone is talking about *their* own experience.
Load More Replies...Henry continued and told us more about his first creations: “The initial inspiration for drawing animals and objects was my dog, Billie, who was always with me and had such personality and warmth. Ideas delivered by animals act a bit like a Trojan Horse, people let their guard down due to cuteness, and then wham! I confront them with their complicity in violent forms of structural oppression.”
I disagree...Golden bown all over and completely gooey in the middle!
Load More Replies...Fun story: I used to light my marshmallows on fire, as many impatient people do. And then one day, my marshmallow had an active spark in it. I had a blister in my mouth for a week. Never again.
I'm the same way. I will be sweet and nice, but if I even get the feeling that you are going to cause harm to my family (not even me, I couldn't care less about what happens to me) I will burn you into the ground. And then I will deal with the consequences our messed up world gives me.
“I’m a super friendly fur faced doggo, but if you harm my humans, you get the teeth and the claws.”
Asked about recurring themes and motifs in his cartoon series, the artist answered: “It's nearly all politics. But so is life. Dogs feature most regularly in terms of who the actual characters are. But thematically, I touch on gender, race, colonialism, capitalism, queerness, disability, fatness, and the Israeli genocidal campaign.”
That's what should happen to anybody who disrespects ladies. Stood on their head with a stick up their you know where.
Respect is earned. Your gender/race/sexual orientation or whatever other little club you've aligned yourself with doesn't entitle you special consideration....if you behave like trash, you'll be treated as trash.
Load More Replies...I know this isn’t the point, but damn I love this illustration style
My father always says that someone who harms children should pay with their life.
"Hello adult, you're a child." Doesn't fit as well when properly translated.
It's like saying hello butterfly. No I identify as an antelope
Load More Replies...A trans man is mentally a man, and doctors can change his body to be very masculine. Feeling ánd looking like a man is meaningfully different, it's way more than just making a statement.
Load More Replies...False equivocation. Caterpillar and butterfly are more akin to child and adult categories and virtually no one disagrees that you inevitably transition from one to another. It's more like the butterfly is saying "I'm a lady bug" and the snail is saying "no you are clearly and obviously a butterfly". That's not phobic it's just a description of reality.
What functionality is that? Trans women are mentally already women, trans men are mentally already men. And you can change the body to work perfectly fine as the opposit sex. The only difference in functionality is fertility and the ability to breastfeed, but plenty of cis women also can't breastfeed, plenty of cis men and cis women are infertile too. Are they not really women and men n'either, because they lack the functionality of their sex?
Load More Replies...Nothing to do with humans and trans, it's transform phobia, godddddd!
It’s “equitable”, and who ever said life is equitable?
Load More Replies...Nah, you can't compare natural development to desired transition... It's like wanting to remain with first teeth you had through adulthood... Them wings grew on the body , nobody glue them on and said... I'm not crawling anymore...
Lastly, we wanted to know how Garrett comes up with ideas for his new illustrations, and we found out: “I ask myself what I'm angry about today. I try to contend with what tragically mistaken habit of thought has allowed a group of humans, all of whom I believe to be capable of courageous kindness and atrocious cruelty under the right circumstances, to head down that latter path. My comics are of course sardonic (and some might even say, glib) but I do hope to take seriously the harms I'm commenting on, and the material factors that motivate the ruling class, and those fighting for liberation.”
Bunnies devoured my vegetable gardens, I gave up and just planted clover all over. Adorable destroyers. (Also related to the cartoon that is indeed what the "haves" tell the "have nots".)
Those anti-poacher groups are some brave and selfless individuals.
I think this speaks more of refugees in general than anything.
Load More Replies...Of course you can stay. Warning though, you'll get high risk of mental violence that will scar you and your children for rest of your life.
elephant: but you have to assimilate to our sanctuary, respects our sanctuary's culture and laws, you must adjust and not the other way around
WOW!!! somev of the comments on this particular one certainly took a downhill turn...
These nasty comments are coming from someone with a nasty word in their username.. I believe that you might have misunderstood what Ragnarök was all about, and I think the pointing of critical fingers should go in the opposite direction than it does in your post.
Load More Replies...The artist mentioned he hopes that in some way, his work is inspiring and plays a role in pointing the way to greater solidarity: “The drawings can be this kind of motivational, reassuring, connection-building, and argumentative-strategy-providing resources at their best and that function makes me ecstatic to be doing this work.”
I don't consider all tears weak, I consider them a sign of being human.
Sadly, you may be part of a minority in that sense.
Load More Replies...It's nice to see "poverty was invented" rather than listen to politicians insisting it's some natural state that has to exist for some reason.
Yeah, And it's the individual person's "fault"....
Load More Replies...I think the problem is that the US system is rigged- the super rich and huge corporations don’t have to contribute almost anything at all to society in terms of paying taxes, but they’ve figured out how to make tons of money to add to their already massive bank accounts. This system of the wealthy getting more and more money doesn’t depend on how many poor people there are. The rich will get richer regardless..
Load More Replies...👆🏻The *truth*. Being/living somewhere safe is a huge lottery win that those of us who ‘won’ have done nothing to deserve, so let’s count our blessings and try to help those less fortunate. 😢😌
My parents tell me all the time to not be jealous of my siblings for what they have and I don't (e.g., a piece of candy), but to be happy for them. Or to be grateful for what I have, because some don't have what I do.
I suppose you are thinking of the human kind of mindless foolishness.
And this just goes to show you that the US is getting dumbed down, which is just how the politicians want it. A stupid population is an easily controlled population.
What does this have to do with women's rights over their bodies?
Load More Replies...Babies are not kidney stones wtf! I am not against abortion but this is just stupid, does not make the point at all!
I am vehemently pro choice and reproductive rights; comparing a kidney stone to a fetus makes me uncomfortable. 🤷🏿
Doesn't even have to be a fetus. Any kind of procedure to remove an unwanted growth in there, like a tumor, can still be counted as an "abortion" by that state's laws and still be outlawed. Even if removing it could save that person's life, and the procedure doesn't even involve a fetus whatsoever. All thanks to politicians that don't know jack about medical procedures.
I'm okay with abortion if the child is either dead or is unlikely to make it, but that's me
The comparison should be the rights of the penis VS the rights of the uterus.
Hmm... there's a big difference between a kidney stone and a human being.
For that matter, she usually can't ask to have the uterus removed, either, even if it's not going to be able to do its job, because "what if you want to have kids later?".
Dumb and dumber here ... Don't remove the stones, if you lucky it might turn to diamond ...
Being alive and being a human being are two completely different things. Pieces of tissue can be alive outside the body if connected to medical apparatus, and individual cells are alive, even in a lab. Neither are ‘people’. You can take a bunch of heart tissue cells, look at them in a microscope and see them pulsate- it doesn’t mean that what you’re looking at is ‘a heart’, that’s just what heart cells do (the heart pumps blood- for something to be a heart it needs a circulatory system- so much for the ‘heartbeat laws’). Not even the Bible sees a fetus as separate from the mother’s body, states that life begins at birth and actually includes an instruction manual on how to *preform* an abortion.
Load More Replies...But if you move too slow do you miss out on the opportunities to be kind? 🤔
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but heartless words cut deeper/For bones may bend, and someday mend; the price for words is steeper.
Absolutely perfect way to put it. I've heard from DV survivors, and they'd take the sticks and stones over words.
Load More Replies...Words and discourse can also open your eyes to new information and view points. Pretty powerful how you can use them.
Do not get offended for everything..Nobody has to be the guardian of your feelings!
Why do you seem so offended at other people being offended?
Load More Replies...That you are offended, or hurt doesn't mean that the words are incorrect. Your feelings don't outweigh reality.
Just because cruel or callous words are true doesn’t mean they have to be spoken.
Load More Replies...LMAO I sometimes wonder what pets think we pick up the poop for.
Dog: "my human is obsessed with my poo. He puts it in baggies!" Cat: "Ikr? Mine keep disappearing from the box."
Load More Replies...Sad that humans can't decide whether to eat all of your or none of you. None of you is my vote.
We CAN use their poop to fertalize crops, but usually don't because people will think it's too gross
No, dogs are omnivores, and you can’t use dung or compost with meat in it as fertilizer.
Load More Replies...Imagine some troll being so toxic they have a problem with this one..
I don't get it. I thought this artist was pro choice. Isn't this pro life?
Wasn't there literally just an abortion post further up this list? Hypocritical as heck, man.
I immediately thought of the children in Gaza and Sudan.
Please note that pro choice is not pro abortion.
Load More Replies...I once found a shell and dropped it in a tide pool because I noticed a hermit crab with a broken shell, and I accidentally started a whole shell changing chain. It was really cool to watch.
It's incredible! I once stayed in a place where hermit crabs would come to the patio at night looking for crumbs. The hierarchy of hermit crabs is fascinating. I found an empty shell in a parking lot and put it on the patio where I could watch if they went for it. I too witnessed the conga-line chain of shell swapping. They are so cool.
Load More Replies...They also evict all males from their groups, once they reach a certain age…go figure! Smart creatures
It's pretty pathetic how you're so triggered by comics.
Load More Replies...I'm told they're a delicacy in some places.
Load More Replies...For all of the men out there: this is about the right for a woman to give up her child. To allow someone else to raise the baby, give it a better life because she cannot. It is a woman’s ultimate sacrifice.
To think that in some countries people treat women who can't or don't want babies as inferior.
Except the chicken on the right should be from the government saying "I'm sorry. I'm gonna have to force you to incubate that fertilized egg"
I don't often agree with you, but comparing women's healthcare to factory farming is not really the comparison I'd want.
Load More Replies...Or the americans will make it a derogatory term for some minority group
For the people of the world that don’t belong to the privileged groups, there are doors that are closed in life and that you constantly have to push open in order to pass through. Some of those doors are permanently locked. For the privileged people, the doors are always open, and they can pass through their lives not even noticing the doors exist. The utter arrogance lies in not considering the situations of others, and not listening when they tell you.
The thing is, racism isn't something that is only propogated by people with a lighter complexion. And not everyone propogates it.
True. I always find it ironic that the people accusing others of predatory behavior are the ones freaking out about kid’s genitals
A number of outfits worn by Freddie Mercury in concert are exceptions to this rule.
Just like self-confidence: if you consistently act like you have it, you eventually will.
“The clitoris has 8000 nerve endings and it’s still not as sensitive as conservative men online.” 🙃
Solidarity because we are all human, not because we like one more than the other. I will not refuse to stand with you because you may have differences of belief or ways of being. I stand with you against all forms of oppression because we are human and every human is worthy of respect and love. See also "First They Came" by Martin Niemöller
Well that's a vicious condemnation of some people who don't do politics but who still know right from wrong and wouldn't mind the place run well.
Having read your earlier posts, I find it infinitely amusing that you seem to think you can tell right from wrong.
Load More Replies...Different strokes for different folks. Cats and dogs have very different characteristics. Or whatever other type of pet.
Rodney S. seems to currently reside at A**hole Academy’s Disgusting Dorm 🤬🤢🤮
Your enthusiasm made me smile. Hope you're having a good day.
Load More Replies...Yeah but human strangers are so much more likely to be dangerous
Correct. But still be nice until given reason not to be imo
Load More Replies...You know, I find it especially funny that many of your rude points are barely understandable
Load More Replies...However, there are visible differences, no? There is a difference between regions and borders.
It’s admirable to an extent, but there are certain things where it’s impossible to stay calm or impartial
Actually penguins rotate regularly so they all get about an even amount of time in the middle/on the edge
Idk, my imaginary sheep have medals of bravery, so that's a pretty high honour.
Not if you just sit here and you draw the most useless cartoons, and just b***h about problems instead of actually doing anything
Yes, but I would argue that there has to be a tipping point where you can safely say someone is a bad person
The point is that “good” and “bad” are never complete descriptions of a person. We’re all more complicated than that. One may be more “good” or more “bad”, but nobody is perfectly “good” or perfectly “bad”. Even the worst offenders in history had some pleasant traits, because otherwise they would have never reached adulthood.
Load More Replies...No lil bro, jeffrey dahmer did not want to be friends with your depressed ahh
Are you actually trying to defend sexual predators?!? While I do believe that no one is entirely evil or entirely good, I acknowledge that there is a tipping point beyond which a person must be kept out of society for the safety of society. This includes sexual predators, terrorists, murderers, and others dominated by hatred and destruction.
Load More Replies...Please shut up. Your comments are not welcome and you are just displaying your insecurity in yourself. You have said offensive things to my community. Please delete.
Load More Replies...I’m sure the tens of thousands incarcerated for years over minor d**g offenses would love the opportunity.
Load More Replies...I am going to name names, Rodney sumner your comments are obviously unwanted and every single one had at least -4 down votes so it is proven that you are not supporting this artist and this space is not welcome for haters like you that just want attention and has absolutely no contribution. Also i loved these comics so much i loved the twists that was put on them and how it was kinda ruined by Rodney Sumner commenting hateful things.
I agree with you, but -4 downvotes is the same as 4 upvotes. I knew it doesn't really matter. It just bothers me for some reason
Load More Replies...Great comics. Too bad certain commenters feel the need to sh*t on them instead of trying to understand them.
Great comics, full of wisdom and intelligence. From the comments below, I'm really glad that, for once, I didn't bother reading any comments.
