50 Incredible Things People With Extra Time On Their Hands Made Themselves And Shared On The “Something I Made” Online Group (New Pics)
When was the last time you created something with your hands? Like a cake, a painting, or a pair of socks? Do you remember the feeling you had after finishing it, the satisfaction you got even if it wasn't "perfect"?
Handicrafts can be an excellent way to experience flow, decrease stress, and relieve anxiety. However, when you're, for whatever reason, a bit lost in the quest for a balanced life, it can be quite difficult to choose a project that would suit you.
For that, let's take a look at the subreddit 'Something I Made.' As its name suggests, this online community unites people who are proud of the fruits of their labor and want to show them off to others, congratulating each other on a job well done and encouraging people to keep at it.
So, continue scrolling to check out their top recent posts, and fire up our earlier publications on the subreddit here and here if you want more.

I Did A Shirt! This Is The 3rd One I've Made And I'm Super Pleased With How It Turned Out, Despite The Wobbly Top-Stitching On The Pocket
It is awesome. The fabric ist splendid and the light blue looks quite perky with it ;) Nice one.
This is awesome! And I can't see any of the wobbly stitching OP is talking about :)
I was searching also....No wobbly to be seen!
Load More Replies...You are the ONLY PERSON who notices wobbly stitching. Every one else sees a great looking shirt. Good job!
As a person who sews I can very much confirm that!
Load More Replies...That is very cool. Men's clothing out there is mostly so bland and limited; I love seeing creative designs like this.
As postdoctoral researcher, editor, and former journalist Natascha Chtena pointed out in Inside Higher Ed, people who spend a good amount of time creating with their hands – be it cooking, growing vegetables, building, knitting, or any sort of working with raw materials really – describes the process as “therapy” and as essential to their well-being.
Additionally, research actually confirms that making things with your hands is a large part of finding your flow, and flow is highly correlated with happiness. Unfortunately, our modern world often makes it very hard to find that rhythm where we can, free of distraction, just focus on the task at hand – where we can just turn off our minds (and phones) and be present in the moment.

Load More Replies...As much as I love the design, I think the representation of LGBTQ in this picture show casing the design is even more lovely. It's just nice to see stuff like this. 2 men, 2 women, a man and woman. No matter who it is or who you choose to spend the rest of your life with. We all should be able to express that and it never be seen as abnormal. It's very unfortunate that this is not the case to this day. There's nothing abnormal or wrong with loving another human being. I'd say what's abnormal is people who think love and relationships are only for a man and a woman.
Oops! That was meant to say it's unfortunate that this is the case to this day.

However, don't confuse handicraft with chores. "Making, as wide a spectrum as it can encompass, isn't about routine chores or tasks. It’s about the love of the craft – the pure joy of creating something from zero," Chtena said.
"There’s a difference between rushing home after a day in the lab to throw together a quick dinner before you faint, and savoring the experience of baking the best banana pie you can possibly bring into existence. The same goes for making your own home repairs to save money versus making your own home décor crafts to add personal accents to your place."

Wife Wanted A Greenhouse. Repurposed Wood And Windows
Here's the thing: you can. You have to start little, get to know your tools, teach yourself something new every day, and most importantly: practise lots and lots. A couple years ago I could use a hacksaw and a hammer. Nowadays I'm comfortable with milling and turning steel, welding, laser and plasma cutting and whatnot else. The sky's the limit - if you dare to start with a first step.
Load More Replies...Beautifully done, I love when people use old stuff to create new stuff
If all of this sounds like fun but you don't know where to start, it might be a good idea to choose something relevant to you. "If you just pick an activity because it sounds cool in theory, you likely won’t be able to stick with it very long," Chtena said.
"Instead, take a look at your life and think about parts you’d like to improve. Are there things you enjoy but can’t afford readymade? Are there products you’re using that aren’t quite meeting your needs? Things you’d like to improve? For instance, I met someone at a party recently who started brewing their own beer because they were after a flavor they couldn’t find in stores. Similarly, I have a friend who uses her handmade jewelry as a personal trademark and sells them for some extra cash. Another friend, to whom living an environmentally friendly life is very important, makes her own natural cleaning products."

How are your fingertips? I embroidered a denim jacket for my brother about 40 years ago, still remember how hard it was! Beautiful work BTW, well done!
Find table spaces, say your social graces Bow your head, they're pious here But you and I, we're pioneers, we make our own rules Our own room, no bias here Let 'em sell what they are sellin', there are no buyers here So gather all the rebels now, we'll rebel-rouse and sing aloud We don't care what they say no way, no way And we will leave the empty chairs to those who say we can't sit there We're fine all by ourselves So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone, 'cause we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us) Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah) Find me where the wild things are I lose my balance on these eggshells You tell me to tread, I'd rather be a wild one instead Don't wanna hang around the in-crowd The cool kids aren't cool to me They're not cooler than
we are So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone, cause we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us) Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah) We will carve our place into time and space We will find our way, or we'll make a way (say hey, hey, hey) Find you're great, don't you hide your face Let it shine, shine, shine, shine, shine, shine So hey, we brought our drum and this is how we dance No mistakin', we make our breaks, if you don't like our 808s Then leave us alone, 'cause we don't need your policies We have no apologies for being Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be alright, don't mind us) Find me where the wild things are (oh my, we'll be just fine, don't mind us, yeah) Find me where the wild things are

You might also want to keep it simple. At least in the beginning. "Making your own furniture sure sounds fulfilling and all, but it’s also massively time-consuming and difficult to try out without making a huge investment in tools (unless you’re lucky to live near a maker space with woodwork equipment, of course)," Chtena said.
Similarly, winemaking is something you probably can’t pull off if you live in the city but alternative wines, like elderflower or walnut, are easy to make without any fancy equipment and they add a nice touch to social gatherings.

A Painting I Did For My Fiancé. It's Him And His Oldest Son
Generally speaking, baking, brewing, gardening, DIY, body-care, home crafts and accessories are all good (realistic) starting points for most of us.
Remember, when you start small, you will eventually get the hang of it, and can always move on to making bigger and more elaborate things in the future.

"I got started by brewing my plain kombucha, then I added a second fermentation where I started infusing the brew with herbs and fruits, and then I slowly moved on to other fermented drinks and vegetables," Chtena described her own journey.
A Leather Bag I Made
Wow! It looks like it could last a lifetime and then be handed down for many more years. I'd take this on many adventures.
Leatherwork is very hard to get right. I once had a neighbor hand tool a purse for me. It took him a month to carve out the roses and leaves.
Wow! I'm certain I couldn't afford it if it was in a shop. It's beautiful.
I like it. And, tbh, it's okay that it's leather. As Americans many of us eat a lot of beef and it seems incredibly wasteful to not use the entire animal.

I Preserve And Frame Spiderwebs!
I used to do this! I would use different colors for the background at times and even dyed some of the webs. I used Rit fabric dye mixed in a spray bottle and would very lightly mist the web and let it dry several times until it reached the hue I desired. After getting the web on the background I would then lightly spray with hairspray to help preserve it. I may have to try this again, it's been a long time!😊🕷️🕸️💛
Pretty please tell us your technique for actually getting the web from its original location without ruining it?

Load More Replies...I Make Canvas Bags, Here's My Latest! Naturally Dyed With Madder Root And Cochineal
Would vegans buy this bag? Or would they consider it non-vegan because of the cochineal?
It is non-vegan for sure. That being said I know not all vegans share the same opinions on matters like this. If you are vegan for the animals, you probably won't buy stuff with non-vegan ingredients at all or if you do, you buy them from a second hand shop so that you don't support the manufacturers. If you are vegan for some other reasons like health, the bar for purchasing non-vegan stuff might be lower and that's one of the reasons that would make you plant-based rather than a vegan. I'm vegan for several reasons and I avoid exploiting animals and also it would feel bizarre to choose non-vegan items or ingredients because there are vegan alternatives available for almost everything.
