Mob mentality — sometimes also called herd or hive mentality — is the inclination that humans have to be part of a large group, neglecting their individual feelings in the process, and adopting the behaviors and actions of the collective.

Interested in how this concept manifests in everyday life, Reddit user AdmirableFlow made a post on the platform, asking everyone: "What's the most severe case of mass stupidity you've ever witnessed?"

As of now, the question has received over 4.1K comments, so compiled those that stood out and invite you to learn more about the challenges of maintaining critical thinking.

“We Can Use Fewer Idiots In The World”: 40 Cases Of Mass Stupidity That Prove People Are Dumb The January 6th Assault on the Capitol was probably the most severe case of mass stupidity I've seen in my lifetime. Not even talking politically. There were idiots climbing walls when there were accessible stairs nearby. Most of these idiots thought they wouldn't meet any police resistance. They acted as if their attempted coup would be met with smiling cops and clapping congresspeople, thanking them for their service or something.

Trumphumpers are gigantic violent snowflakes with guns. The men obviously all have micropenises, which would explain their constant anger, and the women obviously have parents who are siblings.

And despite obvious video proof, many GOP senators and congress members say it was a normal tourist gathering. One or two of those were seen running away from the violence too. Pathetic little people pandering to their Lord Trump.

It's because it's what they were made to believe by their leaders. The ones that say they are not sheep are the ones being herded. Not living in USA it very hard not to generalise but some people I see on TV seem not only very thick and dumb but also very indoctrinated buy religion and politics.

First: Thank you Zack Vander. Nailed it! This is much more serious then just labeling these people as stupid. They knew exactly what they were doing. They planned it. They came armed and ready to kill out congressmen. This was premeditated. And these are very dangerous and deeply deranged individuals.

The people are idiots. But it is true that a large amount of idiots together is downright dangerous…. This is a perfect example. If enough of them band together there is no telling what they’ll think is “okay” to do.

“We Can Use Fewer Idiots In The World”: 40 Cases Of Mass Stupidity That Prove People Are Dumb Probably get downvoted to hell for it, but widespread continued use of single-use plastics. It's insane. We know these things end up in the oceans and in the food chain (and therefore inside us) but we keep using them all the same. Future generations are going to hate us for this.

Manufacturers are using whatever is cheap and legal to use, so it’s up to politicians to restrict plastic use. Some third world countries have banned single-use plastic bags but the rich countries don’t seem to care.

In The Netherlands we're now charged a small fee when buying things that come in plastic packaging, and though I agree with the idea that 'less consumers, less production', how the f**k am I supposed to transport that salad other than the plastic container it came in, that I want to buy because I forgot my lunch at home and now have no food? Offer me an alternative package and I'll gladly pay for that instead of plastic. Now you're punishing the consumer when there's no alternative.

Kind of the same in Canada., basically anything in a plastic bottle. They got rid of plastic bags, except for the small produce and meat bags, and charge for paper bags at fast food places (you can opt not to have the bag).

Im working on a story in which the new dominant species hundreds of million years in the future, descended from the Red Swamp Crayfish and its future descendants, discover the remnants of humanity and find out abt plastic, climate change, deforestation, war, and ultimately, what led to the extinction of humanity, and many other lifeforms. Keep in mind that this story isnt like a "oh humans are evil destructive monsters", its more like the only way we can fix things is if we actually do something about it

That's how you discredit a platform while looking like you support it. In reality, taking any plane, anywhere, is an environmental disaster, but when you put the wolf in charge of the hens, it becomes a footnote. Remember that the long game is to transfer the responsibility of this environmental catastrophe to consumers rather than to the corporations actually committing the environmental crimes.

If a church takes its parishioners money and spends it on fancy buildings and fountains and the preacher is wearing fancy suits instead of putting those donations back into the community I like to imagine sky daddy's thumb coming out the clouds and smooshing that building. In America some of the churches that televise their worship pay professional singers to sing in their choirs. My cousin is an opera singer in LA, that was a good regular income for him. Meanwhile preachers in Africa sell their own holy 'elixirs' they promise cure all ailments out of their churches after their service...

If they applied the same critical thinking skills to their religion as they do the rest of their lives, they would (should) change their minds pretty quickly. Cognitive dissonance is a funny thing.

When the internet was new we were taught that anyone can put anything on the internet and that we had to check the source of such material. We were not allowed to use more than one internet based source in papers. It's the ignorance of trusting strangers on the internet brewed with a growing mistrust of government after things like wikileaks with a dollop of apocalypse anxiety making them want to be a part something positive (saving 'the children' being trafficked). Qanon used conspiracy theories that have a ring of truth, there was a child trafficking ring; Epstein who we know had connections with rich and powerful men (like Trump). Now flat earthers, that's just a cult of idiots.

The stupidity can't be understated. I know someone who's an anti-vaxxer and has had covid 4 times. Plus they do whatever street drug they can get their hands on, including crack and fentanyl. But, yeah, vaccines are poison.

Well, it's not actually a vaccine, it's an experimental drug, it was never approved by the FDA. Yes, wife and I took the first two of shots. We never got covid. At the last thanksgiving, I asked those (8 family members) at the dinner table. All of them had taken the shots, plus the boosters. All of them got covid, in fact two of them got it twice. Then there is the mask mandate, first masks are not needed, then it was you need to wear a mask, then it was you probably need to wear two (that was my favorite). Then were told cloth masks don't work, use an N95 mask. So, bought some, I had to go to hospital to give blood, I was wearing an N95 mask, I was told to take it off and put the paper blue mask on. Just plain NUTS. Now I'm reading that the CDC just come up with the 6 feet distance. They thought maybe it could be 3 or maybe 10, then decided to make it 6 feet. It was not based on any science, just a number picked out of the air.

“We Can Use Fewer Idiots In The World”: 40 Cases Of Mass Stupidity That Prove People Are Dumb Anti-vaxxers by far. I find it rather ironic that people can discount things like vaccines because vaccines have created a world where kids aren't dying left and right from childhood illnesses. I am not aware of any antivaxxers existing when the Polio vaccine came out because Polio was a horror show.

There were anti vaxers when George Washington wanted the smallpox cowpox inoculation. There were anti vaxers during polio. Check out how many people got vaccinated for polio after Elvis did. The dumbest thing I ever saw was the panic, no one made anyone get any vaccine. There were people at my hospital who refused and lost their jobs, but that was a choice. Freedom of choice ‘my body my choice’ was never questioned… until row v wade. Then those same people suddenly said there was no choice. Pot kettle

I means, stupidity transcends time. I worked every shift in the hospital, fully vaccinated, saving lives. My apologies my ‘attitide’ came across as condoning. I’ve treated full anti vaccinated patients with the same love and care as every patient. A comment said they wondered of people were against vaccinations during polio times. And the answer was yes. There were also anti mask people during the 1918 flu.

COVID decimated high density communities. Take New York City for example. Many conservatives live in rural areas and did not see many people around them die from it. Therefore they thought it was not real or very serious. FOX News' lies also did not help matters. FOX, the "news" source that does not have the public's welfare in mind at all. Only profits.

Debating the usefulness of masks. These masks were designed to control the exhalation of the wearer, not the inhalation of others. Dr's, nurses, etc, don't wear masks to keep from getting your cancer or your heart attack - they wear them to prevent giving you an infection in your weakened state. These masks are for sick people. But in a society where the sick people refuse to wear them, what do you do? Wear an N95 that should require a respiratory fit-test prior to use? (both to ensure no leakage, and ensure the physical fitness of the wearer) But these idiots double-down, by questioning whether these hospital masks work in preventing the spread of disease! AND the CDC etc buy in to their idiocy by discussing their "point"! NO! They only work if the sick, anti-vaxxer wear them - they were never designed to prevent healthy people from getting sick! In Asian societies, this was the norm - if you were sick, you wear a mask to protect those around near you, a lesson the West never learned

    SM
    Community Member
1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Whereas I agree that the main use of these masks is for you not to spread your germs to others. That isn't to say they are totally ineffective in the other direction. Part of the "formula" for if you are going to get sick is the number of germs that get in your system. If you can reduce the number of germs, you have a chance at reducing the chance of getting sick. I live in the San Francisco Bay area which has a high population or Asian people. And they have always worn masks during the flu season, and not just because they are sick. In truth, if you know you are sick you shouldn't be running around in public doing unneeded shopping.

This one really bugs me cause so many people have no idea how they actually work but have strong opinions about them anyways. They mostly protest others from your germs, less protection the other way around. Also masks made of cloth are useless unless they are properly washed after EVERY use and people just don't do that. In healthcare disposable masks lasts like 3 hours but only if you do not touch them with your hands during that time.

And also parents who have children who are not members of the church have to cut any and all ties with them. Like how could any cult, sorry group pretending to be a religion, ever think that's okay and should be encouraged? Don't most cults, sorry I mean religions, preach about family, love, the home unit, togetherness and the general lifting up of children? Scientology does the exact opposite of that, children are NOT to be revered in any sort of manner, they are a hinderance, which I find to be so very sad, even ignoring every other thing wrong with this cult.

As a Boomer, I don't feel the younger generation is anywhere near as stupid as the other older generations. Yes, vaping is NOT good for anyone, but it is not nearly nearly as f**king a killer as the smoking and second hand smoke exposure as my generation bought into.

I used to think that vaping would be THE ANSWER to smoking. I always thought that it was the smoke itself that did the vast majority of harm (maybe 99% of the harm), and that nicotine itself was no worse than caffeine. I quit smoking last year, and have since learned that isn't the truth. Nicotine itself damages DNA, and has other really harmful effects. Vaping seemed like a good alternative for people who were already smokers (although it harmed me personally), but it really saddens me that kids are now addicted to nicotine, wasting money and health on it, just like previous generations did on cigarettes.

I think a lot of it was the idea that it was 'better' than smoking. How hard is it to be better than the damage cigarette smoking causes? Like instead of a 90% chance of lung disease, vaping gives you an 80% chance (not actual statistics).

I would agree with the first statement, except that the victims of these "challenges" are mostly naive kids and kids are stupid. We all were. Maybe some were smart enough to know that detergent could hurt or kill you, but not smart enough to understand that cinnamon, despite being 'food," could actually suffocate you if inhaled. The idiots that promoted those challenges should have been prosecuted.

I myself am a teenager. I think your child should be fine, just make sure to educate them properly about basic safety and the effects of giving into peer pressure. My parents did that for me, and it seems to have helped me enough since I know better than to swallow tide pods haha. Anyways it's probably not too much of a concern, since even though teenagers do dumb stuff, most of us aren't stupid enough to do something for a "trend" that puts our own safety at risk :)

Even IF there was a natural event going on, creating these drastic changes, it is just stupid to accelarate it even more. What strikes me the most is the fact that nobody disagrees that staying in a closed room with the motor of a gasoline driven car in full operation is not very healthy, even if the redt of the room is filled with plants. The earths atmosphere is a gigantic "room". It will take longer to poison the air, but there is no window we can open towards space, to let fresh air in, and the toxic parts will not miraculously vanish.

I have a push gate leading to my front porch. Barely nudge it and it opens. Most delivery drivers figure it out. Then there's THAT one person who doesn't even try to figure it out and leaves my package either sitting on top of the gate or on the ground. Where it can now been seen from the road/sidewalk, rather than being on my safe and out of view porch. Infuriates me. A quick glance would show only a spring and no mechanism on the gate.

“We Can Use Fewer Idiots In The World”: 40 Cases Of Mass Stupidity That Prove People Are Dumb Someone I knew awhile ago had a theft record a mile long. One time, she went in front of the judge, who told her "You know, every time you've appeared in front of me, you've denied stealing. They have you on camera, clearly walking out of the store with unpaid merchandise. So, here's what we're going to do: you can admit you did it this time, and I'll let you walk out of here today, with probation. If you still deny it, then I'll sentence you to 90 days right here, right now". Now, her attorney looked at her and said three words: "Take the deal". She said something back, shaking her head. Her attorney then looked at the judge, and said "Your honor, my client maintains her innocence"; BOOM, three months in the county jail, just like that. It never ceases to amaze me how some people would rather jump off of the Empire State building (or lose their freedom) than simply admit they are wrong.

There's a show on Netflix where they interview convicted murderes, and out of ten interviews, at least seven will still deny they did anything even though some were caught with the gun still smoking in their hand. For me it's the fact that it is widely acknowledged that pro-brexit politicians blatantly lied and nothing is being done about it! Shouldn't there be a second referendum as people were misled? Shouldn't those politicians have repercussions? Shouldn't the continued mess that is brexit be stopped? No. At most we'll have an enquiry, because that's what Brits do, we spend loads of money putting on a public show of looking into what happened while nothing is done to fix what happened. It's a joke.

The b******t sentiment that EU laws were the root of the problem but in fact the EU left it open for the member states to apply those laws. It was easier to blame the EU for immigration than to deal with it, the EU allowed member states to cap EU immigration levels but the UK government didn't do it. Whilst all the racist pro-Brexit vitriol was flying the government wouldn't fight back because the problem was actually them using the EU as a scapegoat and now we're led by a bunch of money grabbing shysters trying to shut down media outlets that criticise them using tactics honed by Hitler.

The truth is that although atheists make up between 20~50% of western population. Depends on the country and indoctrination at primary school levels. Less then 1% are incarcerated. There's not a lot of badly-behaved atheists. Understanding that you shouldn't do to others what you wouldn't want done to oneself and, you've only got one life, don't fork it up, enjoy it!!. It's not a doctrine. it's not a belief, it's self explanatory. BrownTabby, I as an atheist don't have the time or resources the church or any religion has with innocent children to scare the xite out of them into believing they are born sinners. That would be evil. That's the nice part, "make'em believe in father xmas" so the behave. The evil part is the bigotry, misogyny and partisan dogmas of hate.

I think that religion is a kind of self-deception, that the cause of bad things is not up to us, but that everything happens under the control of a higher power. But it's not a god who sends the tornado or hailstorm, not who puts the cancer cell in the brain of the little kid nor who makes the brick fall on our head. I don't think there is any supernatural power and we should look out for each other and rely on each other.

Okay, guys, religion itself is not bad, it's the people that use it to justify hurting/judging/dismissing people. As an anthropologist that studies ancient religion, the concept has always been to help humans not feel alone and have a place to direct their gratitude for living. It evolved to becoming a guide for life and death for some, for others, it's the same as it started. Even the word 'religion' has different meanings in different cultures. Religion is basically Spirituality with tax exempt status in certain countries, otherwise it's just a way of life.

“We Can Use Fewer Idiots In The World”: 40 Cases Of Mass Stupidity That Prove People Are Dumb Maybe not the most severe, but one that everyone here has personally seen at least once in their lives. I belive some of it has to do with the fact that airlines now charge for checked bags and more and more people travel with hand luggage. So, it's not a rush for not missing a seat, of for missing the plane, but a rush to secure overhead bin space... the alternative is to have the hand luggage on your feet, which is quite uncomfortable

Sadly a lot of airlines actively encourage people to stand in line for boarding, sometimes for thirty minutes or more. They want all passengers to be at the gate so they call the flight for boarding early and lots of people haven't worked out that with pre-allocated seats it doesn't matter if they're first or last on the plane. In any case, there is often little or no seating at the gate itself, depending on the airport. I always sit just close enough to see the queue and only get up when it's down to the last three or four people.

I will never understand people that want to get on the plane earlier. Even if I had first class seats, I would want to be the LAST person to get on. And I will also never understand how 80% of the passengers stand up the moment the plane hits the gate... to just stand there for another 20 minutes or so. I get up when it's my turn to get off the plane, and not a second before.

(We would eventually realize that there *was* a small uptick in toilet paper sold for private use, as many people were going to the bathroom at home more than at work, but no one realized that at the time and it had *nothing* to do with the panic - people just started buying more because people were buying more.)

I really didn't get it. I'm not saying TP is not necessary, but in dire times you can find an alternative solution, ie find a way to wash yourself if TP is not available. I would expect more hoarding of food that is not immediately perishable, or medicaments or else, not TP (not that this wouldn't be silly, only less silly)

We did have trouble here with people buying dried pasta and long life milk- including all the gluten free and alternative mills for people with allergies. So people with allergies struggled to get safe food for a while until the supermarkets brought in limits of what people could buy in one shop.

This is more defensible than it appears. No one knew how long lockdowns would last. So they'd buy double their normal and move on. But *everyone* did that. Normally TP doesn't go at once, so need it today, some next week, some next month. But suddenly EVERYONE needed. At the same time. That's what broke the supply chain. And once stores struggled to supply, people panic bough it in huge bulk, grossly misinterpreting the situation. But that happened near the end when the actual damage was already done.

The panic buying of anything during covid was ridiculous. Here in the UK the supermarket shelves were completely empty just before lockdown was announced, but the supermarkets remained open during lockdown so it was pointless. Telling the public that there is no need to panic buy created a panic. 🤣

Doesn't matter if it's Trumpism, Satanic Panic, birtherism, Jan 6th Antifa, school shooting "crisis actors," George Soros, Jewish control of media, immigrants "takin our jerbs," 2020 election fraud, Benghazi, Jade Helm, Q-Anon, transphobia, anti-wokeism, border caravans, grooming, anti-vax, elite pedophile rings, Brexit ... the list is almost literally endless. It's always stupid and it's always based on either straight-up fictional nonsense, or a kernel of truth that's been distorted so badly by conspiracist delusion and baldfaced lies that it bears zero resemblance to the actual facts.

When it's being spewed by those in power who are, in fact, educated, it smacks of a diversion. Let's pound the table on transgenders and abortion so we don't have to discuss why healthcare costs are through the roof (Personal injury lawyers and the lack of a cap, which means HUGE premiums for doctors and hospitals, that then get passed down to you know who).

Who would you prefer as a neighbour, a member of Hamas or a Jewish family. I was friends with a group of Palestinians a few years ago. They had to leave Palestine because they had a western lifestyle. The evil Hamas does to its own people in Gaza is never spoken about. If you don't collaborate, if your kids aren't seen throwing stones. Let's not talk about how the treat woman. The old man had a business and was boycotted, anyone who showed there was targeted as well . It's not that simple.

Hamas starting this tragic mess with a horrific crime against Israeli citizens. We should recognize and never forget this. Israel's reaction was callous and unnecessarily deadly to the unarmed civilians in Gaza. We should recognize and never forget this But how can we solve a problem when the people discussing it are immediately called anti Muslim or anti Semite. This is a land and statehood issue that foolish and politically opportunistic people want to declare as a religious war. We all have to stop shouting and start listening.

This is not a land or statehood issue. The Palestinians have rejected Israel's last five offers of land for peace. They want ALL of Israel's land. There are 22 Arab countries (50+ muslim majority countries) and one Jewish country, but one is too many for them.

Israel is performing ethnic cleansing and killing literally THOUSANDS of innocent Palestinians as it carpet bombs Gaza. The goal is to completely remove Palestinians from their homes so Israel can raze it and rebuild it just for Israelis. They're not trying to get rid of Hamas, they're literally doing a final solution on the Palestinian people. Look at the before and after pictures of Gaza for the real picture of what's going on.

Cults take something traditional but old-fashioned and hyper it up. Charles Manson strummed a guitar and attracted hippies. They get their foot in the door and encourage people to devote more and more time to them by giving them the promises and words they want to hear. The people who first join them are not idiots, but they are driven that way.

Let's not forget that many cult members are people who are vulnerable and are looking for safety, which these cult leaders give them false promise of. Now of course there are also plenty of cult members who join of their own free will, but as far as I'm aware, most cultists are weak, vulnerable, desperate people seeking some form of solitude. Please try to understand this. Many people try to escape cults for a reason. None of this applies to the Great Orange Idiot's cult though, they're all just morons.

This should be top of the list! No matter what the apocalyptic prediction, there will be people willing to believe it. Eg. Cyanide was detected in the tail of Halley's comet, true. The Earth was due to pass through the tail of Halley's comet, true. Therefore everyone was going to die of cyanide poisoning on 19 May 1910.

For-profit torture of children to 'fix' them, a few times throughout history. Straight Incorporated did it to stop kids from ever using dugs. You didn't even have to inject the marijuana, just the fear you might. More recently it's been used by the likes of WWASPS or Aspen Education's programs to 'cure' depression or anxiety by making you hide symptoms, or 'cure' gay by being tortured into pretending to be straight.

I was sent to one of those places for "troubled teens" because I didn't get along with my guardian (no parents). They pay people to kidnap you and transport you to these places. They walked me through an airport with a belt around my waist like a dog on a leash even though I had made no attempt to get away or do anything at all. Luckily, I was 17 already so I didn't have to stay as long as some of the other girls there. Some of them were there for all of their teenage years.

People have no idea how bad they wire true believers. I survived teenagehood (barely) with a mother that believed every part of it hard. Anything that got in the way of her prosperity was demonic intervention. Every penny I earned as a teenager went to pay food and bills cause she gave so much she couldn't even cover $700/mo in rent in the '00s. I desperately wanted to kill myself, but I knew life would get better once I got out. And I did. When I was 17 her and her husband kicked me out in the middle of December, on a 20 below 0 Celsius day, 40km from town. That's the Christian love of people who follow the likes of Donald Trump and Kenneth and Gloria Copeland

Extending Palestinian territory from the river to the sea would involve the mass murder of Jewish people.. and still it is more socially acceptable to support Palestine than Israel, (both have their faults) even today anti-antisemitism is alive and well... Israel warned citizens of Gaza to evacuate because they were going to bomb it to defend themselves and Hamas wouldn't let their own people leave for the sakes of their safety, making Israel out to be the bad guys, and somehow, it worked. I have already resigned myself to the fate of downvotes

How about being called antisemitic for denouncing Israel's actions? I'm denouncing a State not a people, I'm not blaming a people for this just a bunch of psycho tosspots sitting at the top of the pile. The same with Hamas, I don't blame all Palestinians for the actions of a few. Both sides are equally appalling in this, doesn't mean I'm blaming everyone of the same race and/or religion as them for it.

They risk the wrath of the world once their depravity is revealed. NOTE: Hamas DOES NOT represent the Palestinian people. They are not to be blamed.

I knew someone, and I warned them multiple times, that was told by a "friend" a) That they could afford a house way over their means, b) To take out a loan where the interest rate was not set and would go up after a short time! Guess what, that person eventually lost the house. Surprise, surprise.
