A Spanish Speaking Couple Came Into The Restaurant Today. She Translated This On Her Phone For Me. Made My Day
Hello Pandas, and a pleasant evening to you all. Burnt Bagel has chosen to try and become banned tonight, but can we try not downvoting him, instead, we could each leave a mildly disapproving comment, or a wickedly sarcastic one. No worries if it’s a bad idea. :) Have a happy day!
Why should I deprive Burnt Bagel of his heart's desire?
Load More Replies...This makes me really sad. That this lovely couple felt so grateful for this act of... what, someone being a decent human? It speaks to the fact that often they don't get this experience. This should always be their experience. Kudos to the waitress for being a lovely decent human.
Kudos to the people who recognize how harsh the world can be and want to say something! TOTALLY AGREE!!

At burger king i was always surprised by the profuse thanks i would get just for being human to someone when we would have a language barrier. Dann right I'm going to run for my phone to figure out the word bacon in Spanish to make sure I'm getting your order correct. That said, my bf is an immigrant from Poland and he said it took three months to learn English when he moved here not knowing a single word. Effort goes both ways.
This is so amazing. Getting complimentd like this would definitely have brightened my day and made my shift better.
AMEN! I was born in Detroit, but my parents made a conscious effort to teach me French first. I didn't really start to learn English until I started kindergarten. I knew English because of my grandparents. But, I didn't really start to speak English until I was 4y.o. It is best to be patient with people who speak ANY other language and are learning English! They are making an effort! It would be nice if the other party made the effort also! Life would be so much better in soooo many situations! I am fluent in English, French, TexMex, Farsi, Arabic, Tagalog, and Pashto now! I am learning Tamil! Language offers better communication! Communication allows for fewer misunderstandings! Maybe even more peace if it weren't for dictators!!

Even better when you also have to deal with a manager who is sexually harassing you, and you can't quit because you would be homeless in a month.
It's beyond me why people in the USA would ever have the insolence to talk to a waiter or store employee like that. If someone did that here in Switzerland, they'd probably get thrown out of the restaurant.
Because almost every other developed nation pays its restaurant staff properly. In the US, they are forced to scrape and bow with plastic smiles for their tips to survive no matter how inconsiderate, humiliating or outright nasty the behaviour of the customer. There is also no real social net and their for-profit healthcare is out of reach for most of them if the employer decides not to offer it.
Load More Replies...I have so many thoughts on this, I'm about to write an essay on my phone. And I fully expect to get down voted into oblivion for a couple of them. Let me start off saying I do bartend and serve, and it can be brutal. After constant shifts understaffed and overworked, I really am tired. And I can completely agree with AOC's tweet, as long as she is talking about the republicans that actually sit in Congress. I bet if you took every single one of them and put them through what I've gone through, there would be less than 5 that didn't crack. Same exact thing applies to the democrats though. If you dare try and say Nancy pelosi would handle a cranky 12 top with grace, you should not share your opinion anymore. That's probably my biggest problem. This isn't a republican democrat thing, this is an old rich geezer vs desperate and trying anyone thing. And her saying republicans can't do this shows me she just doesn't care. I'm out of space but I do have more to say. Some even nice
I'm sorry for anyone who I offend, or that feels I wasted their time. I do think for a while, AOC truly tried to do the best she could, but those days are gone. I know she used to bartend, so she understands the field. I'll trust that she was good at her job, because she put in the hard work to get into Congress without the money to support it. But she is a way worse congresswoman. Her biggest claim was the green new deal, which I will acknowledge was created with good intentions, albeit some naivety over what is tangibly possible. But that's where I run out of nice things. She's become a croney, only focus on herself and this sad left vs right battle. And she needs to stop being taken seriously, but sadly I don't expect anything better, whether she sticks around or gets replaced. It's not just her, or just left, but anyone who makes it to her spot seems to make major strides focusing solely on selfish pursuits. I swear I only have 1 more post

Republicans making fun of someone who actually works for a living? And yet they somehow manage to con so many working people into voting for them. Congress needs more members who have actually had to work for a living.
Ya tell that to Biden, Pelosi and Waters who haven't done anything except collect a pay check from us.

The r/Serverlife subreddit has been around for more than 8 years. It was founded all the way back in late May of 2014. At the time of writing, the community was 73.3k members strong.
The mod team invites redditors to take off their aprons, have a glass, and chat about work. “Cause c'mon, as much as you act like you don't wanna talk about it, you do. I know!” Aside from hilarious memes, these internet users also speak up about their job experiences. Rude customers are just the tip of the iceberg!
Amen
Exactly! Don't experiment on animals, experiment on people who thought waiters are clueless animals.
A restaurant I worked at several decades ago that was owned by a good guy who really, really disliked rudeness had a prominent sign at the entrance that stated ' If you are going to be rude, insulting and a bore please bugger off now, if you are going to exhibit those traits after you enter, please be aware that the owner, who is bigger than you, will physically remove you, insult you and ban you from this town for life. If, however, you are kind, considerate and interesting people, you might get a discount ' It was a brilliant place to work and always busy. Never had any trouble. Thank you Rod.
I've always thought it would be a good idea to test products on the subhumans who abuse animals.
Where Are My Sunday Brunch People At?
My first job was at a supermarket that was 2 blocks away from a church. The after church crowd were the worst. Horrible, impatient, and extremely stupid. Of course it's busy and lines are long! 200 people just walked in at the same time!
Load More Replies...And they tip you in bibles and religious pamphlets. Thanks! My landlord totally takes these instead of money for rent.
as a christian, this angers me. we are supposed to act like christ all the time, not just a church. one sunday after church, i took a group of 8 friends out to lunch to a vietnamese restaurant where thy bring your food out in stages. the waitress saw us praying before our food came out. i can only imagine what she was thinking. when the bill came, i paid it, and i left a large generous tip, and we left. she was apparently so surprised with the tip amount, she came running out the door to catch up with us, and thanked me for the tip. christians, please be nice to everyone.
I agree. And non-Christians, as you can see we are not all monsters. Everyone deserves respect and servers work thankless jobs. I for one always try to tip generously. Stop blanket judging and stereotyping. It is hypocritical because none of you like it when it is done to you either. And I agree those who come from church and act so horribly, well, most likely they are not true believers and are hypocrites more than you think.
Load More Replies...Worked a place like that. One of our servers had a collection of those fake $20 bills that were covered in bible quotes. That was before Trump and MAGA thank god.
Always thought someone should go to that church where the crowd came from and drop those off in a collection envelope just to see how they like it!
Load More Replies...Honestly makes me want to puke! The damage that religion has and still does to this world. Pathetic..
Some of the most judgemental people I've ever met go to church on Sunday. They think they can treat people poorly every other day of the week but because they pray and go to church, God says it's ok. Nope, sorry that's not how that works. Thankfully, some I know actually practice what they preach.
I am glad some of those churchgoers act how they should- like Christ. I do not like blanket judgements but there are many hypocrites and people who are not true believers who act poorly and give the rest of us a bad name. To be honest their hypocrisy infuriates me more than the outsiders opinion. We have a lot of holier than thou types and Chreasters who say they are Christian but very little of their lifestyle support that. There is no fruit, as they say.
Load More Replies...Yep, I think people forget where they've been when they walk out the church door.
Times have changed as I used to be a server for the Sunday morning crowd and they were always very nice. Not the best tippers but a tip is a tip. This was waaay back into the day though.
I already went on a massive rant 2 posts up, but this one is straight facts. The post church crowd, nearly everywhere, nearly every time, will be the worst crowd you ever have to deal with, that makes you consider even going back to your job the next week. And that's before they stuff you on the tip, or if you're lucky leave a card talking about love and jesus
Genius Move
Many times I have had to tell many people (side eyeing my husband, mom and MIL now) I go out to eat with that just because there is an empty table doesn't mean the restaurant isn't busy. If there are 40 tables and only 3 servers and a busser you are not going to get great service so don't insist on being seated. That also means that they likely only have 1 or 2 people in the kitchen. These are human beings that are working in restaurants ya know. You aren't literally starving.
Your comment is probably obvious to most people, but it blew my mind a little. Thanks. (Sincere)
Load More Replies...Nope, bc then they'll say "no!! You need to clean off this table right now!!! We want ...." and then lists off 5 different drinks while berating you the whole time for not having sat them sooner or cleaned the table. While literally none of this is their fault (the server). I did this for about 10 years (while in college and then after my divorce to make extra money). And because our country still treats them like 2nd class citizens who don't deserve a living wage and makes them practically whore themselves out, just so they can afford to live on this planet, I always tip extra. It's a hard job, no stability, and still we have people who treat them as their own personal servant for the time they're dining. As long as servers aren't making at least $15/hr, I'll be tipping as much as I can. I mean, I rarely go out to eat, bc it's kind of an extravagance right now, but when I do, I make it worth it
Oh I vist many countries and I prefer clear signs. Wait to be seated avoid me sitting on the lap of the customers at the window that want to leave/or I like to speed up that they leave. Seriously, it is different in every country, sometimes it depends of the typ of restaurat. Signs help. Really
At the core of working as a server lies a singular mission: making your guests’ experience at the restaurant memorable. In a good way, of course! Nobody wants to have wine spilled all over their fancy clothes, after all.
A great waiter is bound to have high emotional intelligence. In other words, they know how to communicate well with others, can adapt to unexpected social situations, and will be able to make someone feel right at home.

I do not usually mention this but one time at an Olive Garden our waiter was verbally abusing the boy bussing the tables. We left no tip for the waiter and then went and gave $50 to the busboy. He was doing all the work and being abused by his coworker. I am a believer in fairness. This was an unusual situation but I felt like it needed to be done. Plot twist: I go to church! And not all of us are monsters. Some of use will go out of our way to help others. I always tip, and this was a rare circumstance but the busboy was basically waiting on us and the waiter was taking all the credit. I hate bullying and would never treat anyone how churchgoers are being described above. I assume this is targeted primarily towards Christian churches but lots of religions have churches and every barrel has some bad apples. It is shameful but true and they are likely not true believers as they do not live their faith. I hope this enlightens some people. God bless you all.
Did you report the waiter to the management? A $50 tip is nice, but I thought invoking positive change was being taught in most churches? Paying the kid to take his lumps is a very short~term 'lesson'.
Load More Replies...I'd have hoped the generous couple also told the bigot to go to hello... Zero tolerance for ignorance.
The good thing is that the original Reddit poster said "Management stepped in lightening fast and literally started taking their food off the table as they were still eating. I couldn't have asked for a better response from my managers." in the comments
Waiting on someone is all about balance. You have to be welcoming and helpful without groveling. You have to be genuinely pleasant without pretending to be over-the-top happy that your table is about to have the most amazing time everrrr! Professional, calm, and always present without disturbing anyone.
A great server enhances the entire dining experience and ensures repeat customers. Meanwhile, a bad server is someone who drives everyone away with rudeness, incompetence, and arrogance. In other words, any restaurant is more or less an accurate microcosm of human society!
“Waiting Tables Is Just Entry Level Work. Anybody Can Do It…”
can people not belittle other peoples jobs/work ethic whilst understandably wanting recognition for their own.
Really? Any desk job? What does OP think is a passable day's work? Showing up and leaving on time? I'd love to see OP drop randomly into one of my days which generally consists of directly working on about 1/3 of the 36 projects I've got on my plate plus a variety of other tasks that are not tied directly to any one of the 36 projects. Service workers aren't some kind of all knowing super hero. Just the same as any person who has never worked service would be out of their league if dropped into a service position without any training a service worker would be out of their league if dropped into office work without any training.
Ease down there Ripley; my guess is OP's comment was mirroring the general lack of respect a decent portion of service workers experience given the quote that was posted. I get it, jobs/skills aren't exactly interchangeable, and I wouldn't expect the exceptionally kind staff that I enjoy at my local sushi joint to be able to pick up my duties...nor do I think I can competently expect to manage theirs. If you want to rant about your career choice go for it, but let's not make this a pissing contest.
Load More Replies...I think that's only half of it. I've done both. While the information that you have to retain as a server isn't complex, it's the volume of info (rules, options, orders, needs/wants, etc) that gets thrown at you at one time that's overwhelming. Then 20 minutes later, toss 2/3 of that and replace it with new info, but don't lose the 1/3 you were supposed to keep or people will get angry. It's def mental and physical.

I just pay cash. Whatever I leave on the table goes into your till.
When large parties have all separate checks it takes FOREVER to close out all of the checks, which takes you away from your other tables. It’s panic inducing to see a stack like that when you’ve got 4 other tables that need you for stuff. It would prob take a good 20 minutes to cash all of those out, maybe longer.

If you lived in a country such as mine, with universal free healthcare and a living wage, you wouldn’t have to fake being someone you’re not just to keep a roof over your head and food on the table.
Sooner or later, you’ll have to deal with a rude customer. There’s hardly a job in the world without run-ins with unpleasant peeps from time to time. But in the food service industry, it’s part and parcel of the job experience. Servers don’t just take your orders, bring you food, and send you the check in paper airplane form. They’re problem solvers! They are the face of the entire establishment and act as the bridge between the hungry-hungry customers and the kitchen.
So there you are, always on your feet, dealing with dissatisfaction, and juggling gastronomic vernacular as well as Gordon Ramsay. If you work at a fancy restaurant with a good reputation, and you’ve got a ton of experience to back up your awesome skills, you can rest assured—you’re financially stable. However, if you’re employed at your regular, run-of-the-mill restaurant, whether you’re compensated fairly depends a lot on your country’s laws.

Load More Replies...I don't want my wages determined by the restaurant. I can make a lot more than minimum wage by being a great server. The bad servers don't make as much. Too bad, so sad.

They’re the ones that don’t tip.
I don't believe in tips that's the bosses job to pay the employees and should be correctly following ESLA waiters don't start at 2 something they start like everyone else and if you get tipped and you report your boss pays you the difference so tip or not you leave with same amount
Guilty As Charged
Hah. Like restaurants really follow those. Some states here in the U.S only say that as long as you have 8 hours off between 16 hour shifts, and a full 24 hours at least once every 27 days, then you are fine.
Load More Replies...When you are often the closer and the opener...just do your job the right way. You never know what is going to happen to the openers, like a group of 10 office workers having an early lunch meeting, no heads up phone call, yanking on the still locked doors and pressing their faces to the glass with hand cupped above eyes trying to make eye contact with someone inside.
Like cats and dogs, closers and openers will always be hereditary enemies. Been there, done that.
Especially when you've done 3 clopens in a row. You are your own worst enemy.
Load More Replies...Yeah… no. I’ve worked both morning cook and night cook. I know what it’s like to walk into a less than clean kitchen at 4:30 in the morning. I make sure that I leave the kitchen nice for the morning cook.
One time one of my old coworkers asked me to wash dishes I wasn't able to get to before the end of my shift (it was already way past the end of my shift) and I was utterly baffled that they seemed upset with me for it because I regularly open with poorly washed fishers and stuff that hasn't been restocked or dishes that are almost at the point of needing to be washed (basically they're left with like one scoop or even just a half scoop of food in them)
Ummm... Yeah, but... Everywhere I worked, the closing manager would do a walk-through with the host. Whatever was left undone was either taken care of by them, or the poor dishwasher who's still up to their elbows in the dish pit. Something small? No problem. Something bigger, dirty/messy? Trouble for the person who was supposed to do it.
Catering. Have to unload a van full of food, to be saved. Me dishwasher/prep and the head cook. 250 people party. He was on the phone. It took me like an hour and a half to move all this stuff and then the head shift was astounded I moved so fast. When we both got fired from that place that man helped me get a job elsewhere. Humans do exist.

Load More Replies...Hell. Back in my waitressing days, I had a table full of people. Among them, there was a couple, sitting next to each other, who ordered basically the same dish, just different sauces. She had garlic, he had hot sauce (I think). I brought them their food, they ate it... and THEN they decided to complain that they were given wrong plates, and refused to pay (the girl got the hot sauce plate, and the guy got garlic). JUST SWITCH THE PLATES NEXT TIME, YOU UTTER FUCKTARDS.
That's a manager issue. They ate it, they can fμcking *pay* for it. OR, they can explain it to the cops.
Load More Replies...That is one of many reasons why I stopped going out to eat with my in-laws. For people who get most of their meals in restaurants they sure don't know how to behave in one. (None of them have ever worked in a restaurant, I have managed one, not that they would ever listen to me.)
I'm amazed that the servers on this thread don't know to record the orders beginning with the seat closest to the kitchen. That way anyone bringing the food out knows who gets what without asking. And you can still take ladies' orders first, leaving room for the men in between.
We called those "pivot points" when I was a server. Smartest thing ever, especially when someone else runs the food to your table - it was awesome until they switched seats lol
Load More Replies...Our family restaurant had a great soliton to this. A group of red hatters came to us as a one-off when their regular place(s) were closed. They weren’t horribly rude but demanding & oblivious. Still, we gave them outstanding service. They argued over the 18% service charge on parties of 6+ because each had an individual check and they were “each their own party.” Our two servers, tipping out a runner/expo, busser, host, bar & dishwasher. The overall top total was 5%. A few months later they booked again. Out of the blue our GM, who took the call, “reminded” the guest that our dress code forbids hats, sandals & bathing suits. The hat part was made up on the spot. They cancelled a few days before the res & we were able to take walk-ins rather than turning them away. The red hats never returned.
Who tips the dishwasher? I am glad that KY made it illegal for a tipped person to tip another tipped person out. I am paying taxes on money that I do not get to keep?

For instance, tipping your server isn’t a custom that’s regularly practiced in European countries. There are laws in place which mean that the service charge is already included in the price you see on the menu. Things are pretty darn straightforward.
Meanwhile, in the US, it all depends on your particular state. If you’re considered to be a ‘tipped employee,’ the way your minimum wage is calculated can be very different from the actual minimum wage. Say you’re living in California, right? The minimum wage there is $15/hour. Meanwhile, the tipped wage is also $15/hour. However, in Alabama, the minimum wage is $7.25. The tipped wage? $2.13. The rest of their wage comes from tips. This means that some American servers desperately need their customers to tip. And to tip well.
The Sunday Brunch Crowd Has Finally Been Served
Ok. But other than that slapped-on title, what does this have to do with the service industry?
This is the best! Churches have wat too much money...and what exactly are they doing with all of it...not donating to the poor that's for sure.
This is karma for the number of times I've been tipped with mini bibles.
So, one of the flock made change from the plate, like broke a hundred or something, then used this “money” to tip the waitperson at the restaurant after church?
Table Of 12 People, Last To Leave The Restaurant. Totally Worth It!!
My son who works as a server, told be all tips made that day are split equally with all the servers, I think this is a bad idea, also he just told me his employer sent out a memo that they will be getting a portion of their tips( now this isn’t a mom and pop) it’s a ok sized chain) is any of this legal? He said lots of servers already quit
If this is in the USA, it's illegal. "...file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor, Wages and Hour Division, which enforces the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). You can also contact the state labor agency in the state where you live."

Load More Replies...My LARP group used to have an annual Christmas meal at a Tolkien themed restaurant - we'd all be in costume and, my god, did we make a noise! (and a LOT of mess!). Because of this, we always made certain that the tip matched the bill - which was generally about £600 (in 1990!). We were always put up in our own area - and had two waitresses just for us - and there was competition amongst the staff for who was going to do it - the tip must have been worth £500 each in today's money. Plus, although we were very noisy and raucous, we were always very polite to the girls. I miss those nights.
I tip 50%. Wait staff don't get paid minimum wage. In most states it's considerably less. They survive on the tips they make not the wage they earn. Even if the service isn't great it's usually due to understaffing. The service will be better nextime but in the meantime servers still need to survive. Help a fellow human out, it's probably not going to break you
If I got a tip like this, I'm not sure I'd be able to take the whole thing. There are good people, and some people are just too good. Especially too good for me
Tropical Smoothie Cafe splits tips. I told my daughter that I thought was just asking for lazy people to earn the same as hard workers. Which isn't fair imho and causes the hard workers to slack off too. 🙄
I don't like the tip system, but some claim it's a "merit system" where the best servers earn the most money. Fair enough, but let's require the employer to match each tip, dollar for dollar. It still will be the same merit system - the best server earns the most.

My son just started a job as a server, they close at about 10 this day, his dad waited until 11, he said the restaurant has to serve people that come in before 10, so yep people really come in at 9:50 and order food and drinks, one day he said 3 different people came in 5 minutes before closing, who the hell does that??
So. Many. People. And they’re almost always 10 percenters. Very rarely will someone who is willing to keep you at work an hour past close make it up to you by tipping generously.
Load More Replies...I had a manager who let in a party of 40+, 10 minutes before closing. 😡
In France closing time is for the kitchen. I will never get why the US does not work the same....
Same in UK. I thought I was missing something. Every single waitress job I ever had (many) the kitchen closes way before a shifts finish. Even if it has been stupid busy, the tables are clean and ready for tomorrow before last orders. Usually the last half hour is quite gentle. On really crazy days, manager may ask for volunteers to stay a little (paid of course) if it looks like kitchen won't get clean. If no one volunteers, management do it.
Load More Replies...I'll ask before I get seated: is the kitchen closed? Are you still serving? How long before closing?
This happens all the time and it's a nightmare. Not JUST because you have to serve these people because next weekend your DM will be there to crawl up your a$$ over "Why aren't you closing on time?!" Yes, really.
I've never done it myself, but it does happen in the UK, except the staff will look at you as if you have rubbed dog faeces on your face and asked for a kiss
Happens with any retail store. Customers came in to select custom picture framing. I told them I had to close in 10 minutes and then later reminded them this and that I had a Dr. appointment. Twenty minutes after closing they left, didn’t purchase as they were “just looking today”. My doctor charged me $30 for the missed appointment, my boss screamed at me the next day because he doesn’t pay anyone after closing. So I lost big time. This was back when my hourly wage was $5.50/hr.
When your ability to put food on the table and keep a roof over your family’s heads depends almost entirely on the goodwill of your customers, you’re left with a ton of pressure in your daily life. If you happen to get a stingy or rude customer, you might not be able to make ends meet.
Of course, not everyone who’s rude to their waiters is evil incarnate. Some folks simply had a bad day. However, there are people out there who use their rudeness as a weapon, trying to weasel out discounts and to generally make others have an awful day. The way to handle them is to stay professional throughout the interaction. Try not to take their comments personally. If you’re harassed, however, speak to your manager. Ask them to step in.
This Deserves To Be Here
"I hope you folks enjoyed your meal, I'll have your server bring your the bill right away!"
I used to respond "oh sorry!" and simply flip the stained table-cloth over, telling them "now thats better" in a very confident voice.
Maybe Jake from State Farm will buss this table.. Him and his khakis..
I've had a hostess sit me at a dirty table before. I don't sit until it's cleaned off though. So now you have the hostess cleaning the table while me and my kids wait, blocking the aisle 🙄
Once a family sat at a dirty table for about 20 minutes and during the whole time all the mom did was look at me while I was completely busy as if I could know they hadn't eaten already only by her stare
Customers Have Been Completely Unhinged Post-Quarantine
As a teacher, I'd say the same about students. I've never seen them the way they are now. I get that the pandemic was hard on them, but most have zero empathy anymore, and one of my favorite things about my students was how much empathy they had. They're vicious now.
I wonder how much of it is a recent lack of socialization and how much of it is just straight-up trauma from 1) pandemic, 2) political situation and 3) being stuck inside the house with their potentially toxic families for longer than ever before...
Load More Replies...I feel the same on this side of the pond: people were so eager to get "back to normal" they were borderline hysterical, unhinged. Somehow more intolerant, less accomodating, more demanding. What's worse is that the pandemic hit everyone hard, so less staff on most business, more work, less eficiency (as should be expected). But people rather than being more patient, became more unreasonable. Like, really? You had a bad day, week, month, year so you are going to make someone else's horrible too? Why? Just why?
I had to do a reality check on myself. Unless something is horribly, terribly wrong with food I ordered, I have to remind myself that the inconvenience of slightly cold delivered food or even a wrong order is absolutely nothing in the scheme of things. Especially when there are others who have no homes, no food, and no work. We have become an incredibly and selfishly oblivious, entitled society.
Exactly its like they used up their nice to people at the beginning of the pandemic and said f**k it now I don't have to be nice ever again 😂😂
40% of homeless people have a full time job. For the past 20 years inflation has gone up a minimum of 2%, this year its 9% wages have stayed the same for that same 20 years. Do the math
Absolutely true. I work in hospitality and people are just the absolute worst now.
I Love Our Cooks But This Is How It Is At The Restaurant I Work At Lol (Slight Exaggeration)
Half our cooks would come in high or smelling of alcohol and noone said anything as long as they could do their job. I wear vibrant eyeshadow, like peacock feathers, and get a mini lecture about natural tones only (peacocks are natural but whatever). This was a chain restaurant too and for whatever reason it wanted to suck the joy out of life.
Also, line cooks are typically men while servers tend to be women. Women are definitely harassed more at work places.
A while back, Bored Panda spoke to a server at a fancy restaurant, who had once waited on the musician, Seal. “He could not have been nicer. Tipped well, made friendly, genuine, conversation with the staff, just radiated kindness. It was really an encounter I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” she told us during an interview, earlier.
Unfortunately, not everyone was as pleasant to work with as him. The server explained to Bored Panda that before the Covid-19 pandemic, the biggest challenge was working for little pay. Since the start of the pandemic, some new problems appeared alongside the abysmal wages that are unable to catch up with inflation. Some customers physically threatened the members of staff over safety requirements. Others pick fights over insignificant details. More and more people have been on edge.
I Haven’t Served In A Year Because Of The Pandemic (I Miss It) But I Saw This Photo And Immediately Was Triggered. I Thought I’d Share With Fellow Servers
This is why many restaurants have an automatic tip (usually 18%-20%) for large groups, even if they have separate checks. More than 10 or 15 people and the tip is added to your total. This is because a server gets tied up with a large group and can't serve other customers, meaning that they lose tips. So large groups automatically have the tip included. This is usually written on the menu somewhere or at the hostess stand.
Yea... except that rarely goes to the server... it goes to the restaurant. I've served at restaurants where they did that and the customers never left any additional tips because of that being added.

He was drunk AF. Probably just got cut off elsewhere and you served him

Been there. Time goes sooo much faster when you’re busy and bonus! - you don’t need gym membership
I don’t even earn $200 on a day with a 10 hour cook shift. Maybe I should go back to working a public dining room.
You should just be paid a proper wage, with tips as a bonus. I relay don't know how US restaurants keep their staff with this deal, and I was a server!
When our income is determined by our courtesy and efficiency, we aren't afraid to to basically be paid on a commission, which is what your wealthy executives often receive.

“So, the biggest problem with being a server right now is, in short, that many people treat us as sub-human trash. Say hello, look us in the eye when you order, leave a tip, and don’t call us names or threaten us. Is it so much to ask?” she said.

I worked at a place in Alaska where I was the only line cook without a tracking bracelet.
At almost any restaurant you go to, just know everyone is sleeping with everyone else there.
It does make a certain amount of sense, servers come from a WIDE variety of lives (honestly, nothing has opened me up to all messy colorful variety of humanity like being a server - I've literally worked a shift with a Mormon stay at home mom of 6, a recovering meth addict on prison work release, a drag queen, and a med student) but if we're honest, the core demographic of servers are, #1 20 something's, #2 single moms with multiple kids from multiple dads, #3 people who are currently or have in the past made less than stellar life choices that affect their ability to get and/or hold down a job, #4 combinations of the above. And I don't mean any of that in a derogatory way, it's just facts. And, let's face it - though I hate to equate all promiscuity (or single moms) with "poor life choices" (there are certainly people with happy healthy consensual extremely, shall we say, active sex lives) - sleeping around, often in unhealthy ways, is extra common to all those demographics.

Load More Replies...I've spent most of my adult life waiting tables (except for the years where I was a fully stay at home mom), I can literally name 7 different babies from some variation on this (both servers, no drug problem but an undocumented immigrant, both cooks and both undocumented immigrants from different countries, the server was on work release from prison at the time, etc. etc.)
Oh and one of the undocumented immigrant knocked up two different servers I might add, which, since it was years apart and the first pair didn't last longer than the baby making, was, at the time, actually less messy that the server that knocked up two different servers, who were friends before that, within a month.
Load More Replies...Double Shifts For Days…
Not just a restaurant thing--I work the neighborhood value grocery store, and the higher ups expect us to somehow stock a full truck every week AND keep the store clean AND help customers AND put all out-of-place merch back where it goes. Sounds like a breeze until you hear we are only ever allowed two on shift on weekends (three only if we're lucky/busy)--one person has to check people out on top of stocking/cleaning/whatever I just said, so at any given time we only have ONE person working the floor and ONE handling cash. It's unsustainable, this downsizing economy.
I work in an office and its expected of us to work overtime.. not for extra cash though, time off in lieu...I cant make plans on a friday night anymore as I never know if Im going to be working or not...we get to find out an hour or so before our shift was to end. And I give no f***s about having extra days off..I want money for my time! But alas...I shall be back there on Monday.
Load More Replies...Yeah I feel bad that so many places are understaffed (not just restaurants) and the remaining employees are just expected to pick up the slack with nothing to show for it but frustrated customers and burnout.
I haven't seen a place fully staffed since before 9/11. It's literally been more than 20 years.
One of my jobs told us they were aiming to have 12 package handlers in our area by peak...the most we ever had up there was I think 6 or 7. Now sometimes theyd call people from other areas but here's the issue: they weren't cross trained. And peak is the WORST TIME to try and train someone in a fast moving area.
At least restaurants can announce they will be closing early, or won’t be open one (extra) day of the week so that staff can have a day off. I cook for a senior living community, there is no option of saying “sorry for the inconvenience, but we will be closed today.”

If you happen to see someone raging at a server, think about stepping in. Even if they appear to be unbothered by all of the rudeness, it means a lot to the staff to have someone on their side.
Church Crowd Sucks
Modern American Evangelical Christians are the opposite of everything Jesus himself taught us to be. If there is a special Hell reserved for blatant, evil hypocrisy it will be stuffed full of these douchebags. I can only assume they're all too stupid or illiterate to read the Gospels for themselves.
Reminds me of a documentary about IS when they had a "state" with borders etc. One of the things wich were illegal to bring into it was Quorans....

There used to be a lot more religious folks on bored panda...I was actually warned by one that ..oooooo.. watch you say, we are many of the church folk on here. wonder where they went and/or why they are being so quiet.
Load More Replies...I volunteered with the youth group at my church once and we were taking the teens to a food court in the mall and making sure they all had a certain amount of money to spend on their meal. A few of them asked the youth leader if they could go to the sit-down restaurant instead (they had some of their own money to spend on top of what we gave them for their meal). He said, "Yes, but you need to make sure before you go in that you have enough money to pay for the whole bill AND a 20% tip. I don't care if the server dumps an entire plate of spaghetti in your lap: you will tip 20%. Because I have BEEN a server, and the number of people who told me they were from a church group and then didn't tip was AWFUL." The teens ended up all going to the food court instead, just in case. That youth leader was great...
Seriously? I've been a Christian since 1992! I don't know of anyone that acts the way this keeps getting portrayed. I give to others, to the point, I have to buy it back. I take care of the homeless, when I can afford it. I've seen people standing with signs for work, because they're hungry. I don't have work to give them, but I will, take them into McDonald's, or whatever fast food restaurants around nearby. Buy them a full meal, and give them a little extra. I had a woman I cleaned for, she gave me a few bags of clothes her husband couldn't wear anymore. I was in the Walmart parking lot, and a homeless man asked if I could help him get clothes at goodwill. He had a job interview, and nothing to wear. His size, was the same size as the clothes given to me. I take used clothing off people's hands, to give to others. This man was so happy to get those clothes!! He was in tears! I even went into the taco bell he was standing in front of, and bought him a full meal. Stop judging us!
Church goers don't tip. I was tipped $10 on a $200 bill from a 10 top. Meaning 10 people at the table. I went back and forth getting them refills. Lmao. This isn't a "judgement" these are people's experiences. Talk to your fellow church goers about their restaurant etiquette.

I have friend who does that sometimes. I get irritated with him if he orders something a head I of me. Waiting for him to get done so I can order what I want w/o modify my order.
But if you order it after, and just say, "as is", then stare at your friend.. And the waiter stares at him.. Mission Accomplished!

I can understand one or two substitutions for dietary reasons (like allergies), but when you're replacing everything just order something else.
I have a lot of dietary requirements, but I don't want to be a pain, so I will not get anything that would require a lot of things to be taken out. If there isn't an item that accommodates all my needs, I will not worry about the intolerances and order something that doesn't have my allergies. EDIT: it would be nice to have more options though.

I am with you on this one so much. Lots of dishes I'm fussy about, but save those for when I cook and choose from the items on the menu I'm likely to enjoy as is. A few weeks ago, I went out with my family. I phoned ahead to ask nicely if it would be possible to amend a meal my mum really fancied but due to health problems needed a few changes. I was clear that if it would be hard, she would just get something else. They were really nice about, said it was no problem, and thanked me for calling ahead. Unfortunately, when we came to order my BIL embarrassing ordered all their meals basically changing them beyond recognition and explaining how everything needed to be cooked. “The server may look unbothered, but that’s because it’s their job. ‘The customer is always right,’ is one of the only pieces of training many of us get. It is literally our job to be sure tables leave happy. We cannot argue with you. So, just because they’re smiling on the outside doesn’t mean they’re not offended, or even feeling unsafe, on the inside,” the server told Bored Panda.
“If you’re not comfortable saying something to the abusive customer directly, just find a manager and quietly inform them of what’s going on, they’ll take it from there. A lot of servers are students who are too nervous about losing the job or looking unprofessional to ask for help. And, as someone eating in the restaurant rather than working there, your words will carry far more weight with the harasser than ours would anyways.”

There was stress but it was dealt with appropriately - like the time I broke up a knife fight between two of my chefs at a really nice place with a meat hammer and help from my second Chef. They were both sacked immediately and as they both lived in, lost their accommodation immediately too - this was at 9 in the evening in deepest, darkest Cornwall in November. I was told that there were no taxis available so I'm making the assumption that they walked the 8 miles to Liskeard. Don't actually care but I never heard from them again which is good.
To be fair, that's kind of been my experience too (also UK) I found real chefs can be fiery if they think any staff are unprofessional and can be a bit scary especially for young girls on their first job. By the same token, they are the first to insist no one is disrespected. They can scream in your face you didn't check the order properly but be absolute darlings after the shift. And if a line manager makes the waitresses cry, it's the manager who better start running.

Frequently, I pay for the meal on my card and my husband leaves the tip in cash on the table. He never tips less than 20%, more if it's exceptional service. I always feel like screaming "we left a tip on the table!!!" as we leave so nobody who sees the tab thinks we're being cheap. So, no tip filled in doesn't necessarily mean there was no tip. Just saying.
Same, but I will write on the receipt "cash tip" to let them know they are appreciated and to look for it on the table (everyone pays with cards nowadays) Or if it's a good tip, I put it into their hands and say thank you. Seems like the personal thank you makes a few days better. Great service, friendly, all around awesome. We got separate checks and I realized when I got home I'd only tipped the poor kid 10%. It was a brain lapse and I felt terrible. Poor kid probably thought "Oh no.....here 's a cougar giving me her phone number.". It was not and I hope it made his day. He sure helped make mine.
How about having a go at the employer for not providing a living wage.
Load More Replies...idk...what if this is a couple who has waited & saved to go on a date & this was all they could manage. this isn't on the customer, it's on the service industry for making it the customer's job to pay what they won't. in japan there's no such thing as tips because employers actually appreciate those they hire, want to keep them, and pay them accordingly.
I had a table once..a couple with their child...they were a handful and the child was super messy. After all the kerfuffle, no tip was left....however, they didn't look like they had much money so I swallowed my own shallowness and let it go. Maybe they didnt have much money and were treating themselves, or were travelling and had so much money for eating out...we dont know everyone's story and those with little money are allowed to eat out and treat themselves once in awhile too.
Load More Replies...If you can afford to spend $130 on dinner, then you can probably afford $140. Not that $17 is a great tip in this case.
I'm so confused... In the UK the servers get paid the minimum wage, then a sometimes a service tip gets added to the final bill, which is split between staff, and then its seen as polite to leave a tip for your personal server... So say a bill comes to £90.00 and you have been there for 2 hours, its for 2 people seen as extravagant to leave a £10.00 tip - but cheap to leave anything under a £5.00 tip elsewhere - and barista staff are lucky to share a tip jar of loose change every day.. But get paid a tiny bit above min wage (about £9.00 now)
The US has two minimum wages: one for regular jobs, and a separate lower wage for jobs that normally receive tips. The minimum wage for tip jobs is a little above $2/hr. This is the national minimum wage, some states or cities have higher minimum wages.

14 years cook/fast casual and never saw servers wash lemons--even if there was moldy ones in the case
Oh yes!!! I always tell my server to hold the lemon.
Load More Replies...Former bartender and server here... everyone in the building has touched those lemons.
I've heard stories about tables who attempt to make their own lemonade at the table.
As a kid I had a friend do that but he was 7 at the time.
Load More Replies...Okay, my husband always always asks for extra lemon for his water. So I get a piece as well in my glass....gee thanks. I give him mine and he is well aware of what could be on the lemon...yet he still does it...🤢 Edit: he only squeezes the juice into his glass but, still.
Is This Legal? (In Mississippi For Context)
Yeah, a friend got her manager fired over this sort of thing. Not prosecuted. No monetary retribution. Just fired.
Load More Replies...I'm from Jackson Mississippi, and yes, this is SUPER illegal. Call the labor board and report them. If you have any tips taken from you, keep track of everything so you can be reimbursed (which you will AND THEN SOME). Do not sit on this! If you're scared of any kind of retribution, message me and I'LL do it!
This is called theft and that's called evidence. Remember, your boss is not your Daddy, and they don't actually make the rules.
Nope, and the manager is going to be very busy running the place alone when his staff walks out
No, that is Not legal in ANY state in the US! Go to you labor relations board and file for your tips. Let them pay those tips and pay you for the illegal theft of your tips AND the extra money they fine the employer as penalty! In NM, that is usually 25% more on top if the lost tips!! They owe you $100? Now they owe you$125!
No Im Not Making It Less Oily For You
This is all fine, but make sure that you're not adding something that could be an allergen, like if someone asks for a salad without nuts in it, let them remove the nuts
What is wrong with The US??? No Health Care... No living Wages for essential workers... No Jobs... Are you all alright? Do y'all need help? Are you guys held hostage and will be executed if y'all speak up? Is the FBI gonna come after me for this comment?
Worked as roadie where I wobbled on scaffolding 100 feet above stage, and have even dangled from Navy helicopters at sea. Dodged handsy supervisors, loaded and unloaded semi trucks after driving all day. Hardest job? Wait staff. The fatigue! The memory glitches! The abuse! I am compelled to salute every one of you that has endured and is enduring such a difficult job... y'all rock.
To be honest I hate this compulsory tip thing. A tip should be a voluntary payment given to someone who has provided exceptional service. Restaurants should charge the customer enough to give their staff a proper living wage. Any tip given on top of that should be a bonus to that member of staff for a job well done.
Wait, I don't get it: US servers don't get a salary? They solely rely on tips? Doesn't their boss pay them? Is this legal all over US?
Servers: Sometimes I’m between two options, and I ask the server which one they’d suggest. Is this annoying?
