There are many things that can go wrong at work. But as far as your health and safety goes, your employer has to protect you and tell you about health and safety issues that may affect you. Workplace risk factors include but are not limited to chemicals, biological agents, physical factors, adverse ergonomic conditions, allergens, and psychosocial factors.

From making sure there are enough first-aid resources to minimizing potential risks at all costs, these are the least employees can do. And if not, the chances are they will get busted on the r/OSHA subreddit, which is entirely dedicated to reminding people to stay safe at work. Borrowing its name from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the community's description says “Safety First!” and its 745k members mean it.

So let’s see what kind of workplace disasters waiting to happen they came up with right below and make sure to check out our previous posts on r/OSHA here and here.

I don't think this should be on this "Worst Work safety" list. This picture shows a caution sign, which is normal work safety procedure. It does not show risky/stupid behavior in the workplace as the other pictures

Since the decline of common sense (and an increase in workforce injury litigation), employers have opted to state the obvious in more than one way.

My school was being completely remodeled my first year of high school. They were tearing down buildings and rebuilding one section of the school at a time. Construction crews hit a gas line causing a leak and everyone had to be sent home. As I was walking past the building with the leak, I saw a construction worker inside smoking a cigarette. I’m pretty sure he was fired and fined $500 for smoking on a school campus.

Previously, Bored Panda reached out to the moderator -eDgAR- who was happy to share some insights on the r/OSHA community. The mod said that the online community is meant to be lighthearted, where everyone can come for a laugh at how ridiculous some people can be.

"It's not meant to be a place for serious discussions about safety, although oftentimes comments can actually get into great analysis about the issues shown in posts, which is great," they commented. However, unlike other subreddits, "we don't get a crazy amount of posts and have seen days with only a handful of posts. If you're one of the lucky first, chances are you'll get to the top," -eDgAR- explained.

That's how you power fountain pumps. Submersible pumps and submersible lights are much quieter and more reliable than cutting holes in the fountain to install external ones.

Oh my gosh, yesterday we were driving down the freeway and we saw what can only be described as some backwoods, redneck, stacking dolls. (we live in the city) There was a flat bed truck with a box truck on the back, in the box truck was a Toyota SUV and I swear to all that's holy inside that was a friggin washing machine. Like these people were moving and like, listen we're only doing one trip, so put the washer in the Toyota, put the Toyo in the box truck and throw that bad boy on the flat bed. We were trying to guess what was in the washer since we couldn't see.

The main problem with this is that the box does not appear to be strapped down. If it were strapped, or built on a pallet I wouldn't be quite as worried. The bigger concern is the baby the lift-diver is holding.

Uh... what? The carrier posts extend further up than the lumber, locking them (or the trailer) in place. First corner will make the trailer ride on one tire at the least, or topple it over if the corner's a bit tighter.

Not surprised to see one from Malta. This kind of thing happens on most of the construction sites (of which there are MANY), and there are deadly accidents on a fairly regular basis. Last year a woman died in her own home because the construction site next door had weakened the structure of the building and her house collapsed on top of her.

Maybe a bit of something along those lines, but I suspect a lot of it is training, experience and exposure. I have fear of heights, even Uranophobia (term not used much, means fear of heavens, and if you feel like a giggle then there's an animation that explains this and other phobias graphically called Figaro Pho, can find it on Youtube) which can make it hard to even walk on solid ground let alone be at heights, but I've gotten it under control, have a working at heights and elevated work platform permit and can manage that, but still even watching those guys climb construction sites makes my balls quiver like my perineum is collapsing in on itself. So, I'd say, from personal experience, it's probably a bit of both.

Walls can fail, there are a lot safer ways of doing this. Especially as they appear to be installing rock bolts to help retain and stabilise the wall.

I was touring an oil recycling plant for a school project, one of their warning/emergency indicators at each tank was an air horn. Seemed crude, but when he explained why, if there is a major f**k up and kills the electricity, the air horn is immune to that problem.

Don't forget to say that toxic fumes are absolutely a thing. The first thing our safety inspector tells us during safety meetings is that if there actually is a fire in our building, we have seconds to get out and away from the smoke.

I was working midnight shift as a nurse in a nursing home and saw white smoke rolling down from above the drop ceiling. I called the fire dept. and anticipated the possibility of evacuating residents. Thankfully it turned out to not be a big deal. Later I was told by the facility maintenance head that if it happened again that before calling the fire dept I should get a ladder and inspect the area myself to see what was wrong. I declined and said it wasn't in my job description. My husband the electrician wanted to strangle the idiot that told me to do that.

Doesn't seem too bad, depends on the size of the fire. Some fires are small enough that throwing a drink or stamping on it could put it out.

I think the O.P. read too much into these directions. Number 4 (Direct people from the area) is telling people to get away/out of the fire location/department. And Number 5 is somewhat ambiguous. It could mean that IF you CHOOSE to assist prior to the Fire Department arriving, do not be a hero going at it alone.

That coil spring is used in a car suspension and can hold the weight of the entire car. That is quite likely the most dangerous part of a car to work on. Those pliers can easily break loose and shoot out sideways. Not to mention what would happen if they came loose while installing the shock. You're looking at missing fingers, deep body lacerations, etc...

That is the sign of a good employee. When a job needs to be done, step up and do whatever is necessary to safely make sure it happens. A useless employee would claim it was impossible and push responsibility on another. Then claim to be injured in the process.

If I was hired by a company then went on to explore my work area and ran into this abomination, I would be very compelled (as a duty to protect my fellow humans/coworkers) to make change my first job responsibility. And that would start with a call to OSHA and the building inspectors responsible for the site. Whether or not I chose to stay employed there would be based on the reaction of the company leaders in regards to the safety and wellbeing of their workforce -- the frontline boots-on-the-ground, hands-in-the-s**t people who bring the money into the business -- and what they ultimately take responsibility for and correct.

Looks like he is stabilizing something in the truck bed. Granted he is doing it in an unsafe way unless once again safety lines are there but unseen.

It's a well-head, and probably under significant pressure judging by the size of the flanges. It's common to see abominations such as this when something is under test, or during temporary work. They don't exactly make flexible hoses for that sort of thing.

Even that may not be enough. My dad’s foreman cut his lockout tag off a welding robot and pressed the start cycle while my dad was still inside the machine. He said he thought Dad had had plenty of time to fix the problem and he wanted production back up.

Close but failed: the jaws of the hasp need to be in the lock--out hole. Here only one padlock is locking out, and the others are just ornamentally attached along with the hasp. Only the blue padlock is an approved Lock Out padlock the others are not.

Not sure what they are doing, but one way to secure something several people need access to is link the locks. Each person has their own lock and key. Remove one lock to open.

This is how it's supposed to be. In situations like this, every worker is required to put these safety locks in place for their own protection.

    Douglas Turner

Yeah, there is no protection offered here. The lockout hasp needs to go through the switch. That silver bit that looks like a claw? It should be where the first padlock is. So one key and the whole thing comes away.

The "right equipment" was just inside those double doors. To me this indicates the the employee opted to go without. It's more likely in this scenario, that the worker felt comfortable doing the job his way and his supervisor/manager would have chewed his heinie if they became aware.

They have one week to fix all reported problems and inform OSHA what they have done. They also need to give evidence. OSHA will conduct an inspection and if they are anything like the authorities in the Netherlands, that will be an unannounced inspection.
