(This was not even a rumor, but more like sarcastic comment from a friend who heard I was excited to go to the US, because he knew what book nerds my entire family is)
When I first arrived here 25 years ago, the first day of work at Newark NJ, I walked out at lunch time and saw the huge Central Library. The size boggled my mind, but I bravely walked in to check it out. The guy says, yup, show me your work ID (for local address) and you get a membership card.
Me: how much does it cost? I only own $80 total till I get my first pay.
He (bemused, almost laughing): it's free. You don't pay anything.
Me (after a brief recovery time from shock): so how many books am I allowed to take home? (Expecting that to be a catch - maybe I need to put down a security deposit for each book)
He (now positively enjoying himself): how many can you carry?
That day I took home 30+ books, just being greedy.
And quickly called my dad to tell him about it.
For a guy who painstakingly would browse used books stores in small town India just to get his kids great books to read, he was suitably amazed. He was puzzled if that would kill the book-store business, because who'd buy if such free libraries existed?!?
Till date I remember the gratitude I felt that day for being able to come here. And when Dad visited some years later, I would drop him off at a library on my way to work and he'd be lost in it all day.

In an area, you're subject to a f*ck ton of different laws. There's laws that apply to the whole country, laws that apply to individual states, laws that only apply to counties, laws that apply to individual cities, and then I think, different areas within a city. In England, no matter where you are, all the same laws apply, with very rare exceptions. Homeowners associations as well. What a load of [crap]. Land of the free, but your neighbour can tell you what colour your f***king fence can be.
Well, it’s difficult to govern such a large country from one small district (DC), so you have to delegate from the federal government to the individual state governments to the county governments to the city governments. The more local you get, the more specialized the laws become as they’re tailored to issues and situations specific to the area. However, that does open areas up to corruption if the wrong people manage to gain some power. You know, like the whole f*****g country because of the deranged orange baboon throwing his feces around the Oval Office right now (who I did not vote for, so do not blame me).

This sounds insane? In my country it's 4 months and it's paid and the father can get work off for 9 weeks, which is paid as well. The women can also start their leave a few weeks before giving birth.
In Canada we get a year which can be divided between either parent, however they choose. Plus you can take another 6 months unpaid. True story.

That is insane to me. In my country it's two years paid (you get very little the second year tho) and 1 year unpaid. Most moms just take the 1 year. I can't imagine what the impact on a child's psychology is from being deprived of contact with the parents so soon.
In Sweden it's called parental leave and it can be split between parents, it's something like 480 days with 80% pay.

this country doesn't care about its women. On the surface we seem to be freer than other countries. But we don't get paid as much as males for the same work, we get in trouble to taking off "too much" because we're the only ones who will take off work to care for sick family members. And we only get 6 weeks off for producing future labor for companies.

In Croatia you have 1y paid and you have to leave work 45days before term and you can use 30day paid hollidays after childs birthday - before returning to work - for 3rd child you get 3y paid
This varies from state to state. More shocking is that Americans receive less paid time off overall...this goes far beyond just maternity leave.
Yep! Most employer's demand that you work for them for several years before you earn a vacation/holiday. My employer will give you 2 weeks after 10 years of service. That's pretty standard.

FMLA states you can get up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. You are required to us up any vacation and sick time first. Men get nothing at all.

As an American, I have to say this is quite untrue in most of the country.
I've never seen anywhere in this country where you get more than six weeks off after having a baby unless you were a high risk case that required special care. I worked for nearly five decades in various locations from Anchorage, Alaska to Wash, DC and when it came to a healthy delivery with no complications, six weeks was the absolute best offer, most were less. For me, I had to work up to and including the day before my son was born; went to the hospital that night and he was born the next morning. Then I had to be back at work exactly six weeks later, but at four weeks, I was asked to return. The doctor said no and I got the other two weeks.

In slovakia you get 6 months maternity leave 6-8 weeks before expected term, which is calculated on 50 % of ur income. Then you get 300€ and something until kid is 3 yrs old to support you so you can be home with lil' munchkin. If you havent pait insurance before pregnancy, you get only 270€. Not much really, but bettar than nothing and you get privilege to rise your child yourself. Better than brainwashing kid with obsession for everything national and patriotism from such early age. (not the topic, but i feel very strange that kids learn anthem and oath to flag at so early age. I am from the US and this is why my family travels to other countries every year. I want my children to know that America is not the end all be all. There are great places everywhere! I hope that they travel or even live abroad when they become adults and appreciate other countries and cultures. I never had that when I was a kid, but I am now glad I do as an adult.
in 1986 I was the first woman in a large medical practice. My Boss expected me to take 2 weeks off ( we work lots of hours with night call). He was shocked ( but kind) when I said I would be off for 6 weeks... unless there were problems then it would be longer. . I did have to "prepay " all the call I would miss during my 6 weeks off so I was working extra hours and nights when 8 and 9 months pregnant. no-one offered to help. Coming from Europe ( only because of my husband who could not get a job in the UK) I was shocked!

That is definitely no good. In the Czech Republic, there are 28 weeks of maternity leave with the fact that the woman can take on the leave 6 weeks before giving birth and it is paid (about 70 % of her wage), if there are twins or more it goes up to 31 weeks. If the child is stillborn, the mother has 14 weeks of leave. After maternity leave ends, either of the parents can ask for parental leave which lasts either 2, 3 or 4 years and you can chose how long you want to be on one and also change during the leave. It is paid up to 70 % of previous wage.

In Czech republic: From 6 weeks up to 4 years, yes, years. And it is paid, 6 months depending on your previous salary, for the rest everybody has same ammout of money, you decide, how much you get monthly (depends on how long you stay at home).

I had 2 jobs while very pregnant with my daughter, quit one since I got a promotion at the other, only to find out that my promotion will start after I have my daughter, which was about a month later. But since I was only "part time" until she was born, I only got 2 weeks off (unpaid) before I had to go back to start my full time position I got about 6 weeks before. The company did not want to pay for me to be out for 6 weeks, and honestly I feel I was so naive about it. I had her on a Friday, only for them to call me on Monday to ask when I'd be back! It was a big company too. Shame.
Paid leave up to 2 years(you can choose how long you want to stay) in my country, with protection, which means you can't he fired. After you return back to work, you have "mother protection" also can't be fired, and after that you can take "parent part time" for like another year (also as a man! ) where you also get protection from being fired.
You only get 6 weeks off work if you are lucky, and you are required in most places to take some of that time before the birth. Most low paying jobs have no protection or maternity leave provisions.
FMLA is federal law. If your employer denies it, report them.

Americans are nice and will stop to talk to Strangers. Canadian here living in Alberta. To any one who has never been, you will be blown away by the general Americans' generosity of their time, knowledge and helpfulness. I have done a few summers of Road trips from Calgary. one time i went to as far east as Ohio-Tennessee, as far south as New Orleans and Dallas, went through the flat lands and rode up the Rockies the rest of the way home... I have visited almost all the landlocked states (5 more to go) and 4 along the Gulf states, all by Car. I have been through a lot of big American cities and a lot of tiny towns. ALL OF YOU, North to South - make Canadians look like Bloody Savages. I expected something worse, probably because of Television and the Internet. i ended up leaving your country after the first time i visited, blown away and with a new found VERY REAL love for my southern neighbors. Been 5 times on multi-week trips. will spend time and money there again. 10/10.
There are a lot of crazy things in US from an european point of view, but I totally agree with this post. I found Americans very nice, gentle and caring people. Before going there, I immagined to find rude and aggressive people :)) Too many bad movies! The first time I arrived in Philadelphia my english was not very good, and sometimes I wandered looking for some shop, or the subway or whatever... and I remember men or women that tried to help and listen me patiently. I still feel gratitude for those who made me feel welcomed and safe. Philadelphia is still in my heart! I left the USA in 2011 and I don't know if that's still the case.
Drink sizes. When my family visited in 2017 we landed in Texas for a stopover. First thing I saw in the shops part of the terminal was a dude who was drinking from what looked like an actual f***ing bucket - here in NZ our “large” drinks would be considered an American “small” or maybe “medium”

That public transport is almost nonexistent in many smaller towns, which makes it a necessity for teens to have their own cars.
Yeah, it's not just not having no public transport. There are a lot of places (I lived in one) where there are no sidewalks, so you can't even walk from one place to another. And if you live in a small place, you can't get a taxi or anything else to come out and pick you up. If you don't have a car, it's almost impossible to get around in the USA. And it's not just small towns. Even big towns have no transportation infrastructure.
American State and National parks are some of the most beautiful places on earth. All parks could use more funding, but American parks are well staffed and maintained. There’s real pride.

The minimal amount of paid days off you get from work. A friend of mine from Wisconsin was very proud he got 20 days off per year. If someone in Germany would offer me only 20 days, I would laugh at him and leave.

I studied in Maryland for about half a year back in 2017. I'd always heard that Americans are like... super good at pie. Taxi fares. I was stuck late one night in London after a train was delayed and missed my connecting one to the next station. My phone died out of the blue so couldn’t get a map up or call anyone, and the streets were deserted which made me even more freaked out. A stupid critique; the SATs being mulitple choice DOESN'T mean that you don't have to know the material involved to score well on them, you can't successfully guess your way to a high score just b/c they're multiple choice. I passed the Bar Exam in America, and the national portion of that (which you have to pass in every American State's Bar Exam) is multiple choice. Believe me, it's still really f***ing hard and you have to know your s**t up and down to have a chance to pass.

Majority of cars have automatic gearboxes. We don't get that here in Greece.

Yes, I once ordered a steak in a restaurant in New York and practically the whole cow was served up. I’d never seen so much meat in one sitting. It’s the same in other places too. The average meat portion is supposed to be a playing card size not a whole dinner plate.
That a lot of American houses are actually built with a lot of wood and a lot less concrete than here in Germany. You would never get the idea to built a house out of wood here. But when I went to Minnesota lo and behold my host family had one of those wooden houses I've seen in movies and such. To me it was mind-boggling at the time :D

hat lesser-known musicians aren't paid for their show by the owners of the club/bar/what ever. I still remember how a Los Angeles musician told me completely surprised that he and the band had received free food and drinks before his show here in Germany. This is just normal for us! That artists - no matter if wellknown or unknown - are paid for their music by the booker and get catering. (even if the celebrities, of course, get more and better stuff)

I had lived many places in the world, including in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, but moving to the USA was the biggest culture shock of my life. After 23 years, I got used to a lot of things, but I have to say, I'm very happy to be living back in Europe again.
What really blows me away is how much BoredPanda users are emphatic about knocking one country. We are as diverse as many of the countries you claim, there’s a variety to American that gets glossed over by such a finite list. Shame on a website for abusing and crowd sourcing a list targeting a single group of people. Especially with what the world is going through.

Take a seat and relax. This will make you feel like a hobo drug addict going cold turkey after a 15 year hard drug habit. If you want to stop the posts then try initiating universal healthcare, taking guns off the streets by making it illegal to carry outside your home/property, stop the religions from ruling and make your elections actually democratic by closing the electoral college. That would be a good start .

I will tell you that a) the HOA sucks b) college is very, very, very expensive c) patriotism is real
We also are refusing COVID-19 testing for everyone except adults who need to be hospitalized. The only thing free is the testing, but in order to get a test you have to pay for a doctor's appointment which costs money, and none of the treatment is free, unless you have insurance that covers all or some of it.
Tired of the "America is awful" posts. Every country has good and bad stuff. How about writing about the good parts for a change. This is getting old.
Probably because there's an endless supply of stories about how s**t the country is. :)

Thanksgiving is not an exclusively American thing, we have it in Europe (although it's not a red day on the calendar) and east Asia as well. It's a celebration of the harvest and the food.

There's a difference between bashing and legitimate criticism of insane policies that are very much harmful for their citizens. Not every negative criticism is "bashing" and it's healthy to be able to tell the difference

More than likely Europe as a whole is not targetable. I could tell you what I know about a few countries, but I don’t think of Europe as a unit. There’s French, Finns, Germans etc.

All countries are different and that's what makes them great. Some of these things that are being pointed out are seen as a positive and some of them are just surprising. I am sure that this would happen if you asked Americans about other countries.

Why do Americans call themselves German, Irish, Italian, Greek and so on, just because one of their ancestors comes from that country (yes, you are all immigrants), but you neither know more than a word from that language and you have absolutely no knowledge about the country, the culture, the people, the food (really, what you call Italian or German food is just an abomination)?
