40 People That Had The Audacity To File Complaints For The Most Stupid Reasons, Only To Be Shamed Online
InterviewThere you are, casually going about your day, sipping your coffee, reading the news, when suddenly like a bolt from the blue—your boss calls you into their office or you get a letter summoning you to court. Apparently, someone has filed a complaint against you. But you’re confused beyond belief! You have no idea what this is about.
As it turns out, it was something utterly ridiculous. So ridiculous, in fact, that people couldn’t help but share their experiences with coworkers and customers online. Redditor u/InfiniteCalendar1 asked people about the strangest reasons someone had a complaint filed against them, and wow, did they deliver! Scroll down to read their full stories.
Bored Panda got in touch with the author of the thread, redditor u/InfiniteCalendar1, and they opened up about the real reason why they asked the question online. As it turns out, the inspiration was an awful interaction with a mean customer. Read on for our interview with the OP.

I’m a firefighter an have had the following citizen complaints:
1. Kicked down a door to help an elderly woman who was on the floor. Her son wanted us to wait until he arrived with a key. He was 5 hours away.
2. I wouldn’t let a guy store his motorcycle in our station for winter.
3. I wouldn’t repair her stove.
4. We took too long to respond to replace a guys battery in his detector that had been beeping. We were performing CPR at the time.
5. I wouldn’t take my boots off while entering a lady’s house. It is against our protocol to take off any of our safety gear. Her house was actively on fire when she made the request.
Fire fighters broke a bedroom door, a window frame and a glass jewellery box when they came out to a fire at my home... I just thanked them! The window was the only one that was part of dealing with the actual fire and the door and box was from installing an Industrial fan to blow out the smoke afterwards. In those situations most people are just relieved it isn't worse. Wasn't as bad as the actual fire damage after all!!
Even if the worst of the damage was directly caused by firefighter actions, wouldn't most people just be relieved that they put out the fire before it burned the whole bloody house down? Glad to hear they were able to save your home.
Load More Replies...The first one was planning to hurry the inheritance but you saved his mother ! Bad firefighter!
But I mean the boots could have made her floors very dirty indeed. /s
The only correct answer for someone who saves your life is Thank you
I should have made a complaint when I had the misfortune to need firefighters. They stood around my yard laughing at how cool all my melted and ruined stuff looked. Then when I asked if they were able to save my cats, they gave me a dirty look for interrupting their good time and said, "Nah, they're gone". Then they turned back to their laughing about how cool my melted tv was. I will never forgive or forget they did that. Worst moment of my life.
I love firefighters! I was living above a meth lab in Florida and they came to evacuate the building. It was an apartment of like 10 units. They stayed with us for hours keeping us company and calm. We all played games and talked. They got us food and water. They were so nice
I didnt know I was living above a meth lab before that night btw lol
Load More Replies...Bored Panda wanted to know what had inspired the redditor to create the thread on r/AskReddit in the first place. "I posted it as I was thinking about how I had a complaint filed against me during my first week of one of my jobs," u/InfiniteCalendar1 told us.
"A lady made up a false story that I berated her for wearing a Confederate flag shirt. This 100% didn’t happen so I assume the customer made it up for validation. I found the situation ridiculous mainly because it’s weird someone went out of their way to try to get me in trouble over something that didn’t happen."
Meanwhile, they shared what they did next. They started off by explaining their side of the situation to the boss. Specifically that what the customer had said happened never actually happened.
I have one. Looking back, it was very silly but boy did this p**s me off. Here goes: My coworker asked me if I could cover her shift on sunday (I always only worked on saturday, since I was very busy with university. The place where I worked knew this and happily agreed with it, too.). I said that I could do that, but only if she would take my shift on saturday since otherwise, I would not have time to study. She agreed, only to tell me a day later that she wouldn't be able to cover my shift on saturday. I promptly told her that if that were the case, she would have to find someone else to cover her shift. She told me I was being childish and told management that I was being rude. Management told me to work both shifts and being a 17 year old, I agreed since I needed the job to cover some expenses. I came to work on the saturday shift and the manager tried to tell me off. I told the manager what really happened, but he still sided with my coworker. I promptly told the manager that I had been very clear in my communication to my coworker and that she was in the wrong. The manager said that "I should be more flexible in helping others out". I then told him I wished him luck on working my shift that weekend and walked out without saying another word. The look on his face was awesome. I found a new job as a tutor the next week, at which I was much happier.
I don’t understand why people who try to make things work are the ones who are dumped on.
Because the corporate culture is that if you extend the tip of your index finger, they will take the whole upper torso.
Load More Replies..."You're forcing me to do a shift, so I'll do a shift - of employers."
I hope he made the girl come in on both days, that would be a perfect karma scenario
I'd say you were VERY flexible, it was the coworker and management who were rigid here. How is it childish or rude to say "I can only work one day per weekend, I need the other one for studies"?
I arrived for my casual shift at the allotted time. The manager screamed at me for being late because she had to start doing my work. I explained that the agency gave me my starting time so here I am. Nope, she was still a*****e. I walked out.
I once had a job that suddenly had this problem. Staff would agree to swap shifts among themselves and then someone would break committment. They had ro require a 3 way agreement plan between 2 staff and supervisor for any swaps to be approved.
I once had a coworker file an HR complaint against me for reading books at lunch. I told HR that he’s probably just offended I’m not reading hardcore pornography magazines on the clock like he does.
I had a graveyard shift job once that, due to the timing of the last bus for the evening, I had to arrive at nearly an hour early each night. It was a security monitoring job, sitting in a locked, private station room monitoring cameras and alarms for multiple businesses, so they don't want excess people in the room creating distractions. I would show up, go into the employee kitchen which is just inside the door, and sit with a book and something to drink until time to start. After several months that way, my manager took me aside and told me the shift before me thought it was weird I'm creepy I would just sit there doing that that way during their shift. I resisted the urge to say I thought it was weird and creepy that apparently they're in the station watching me read on their monitors
There's a follow up comment that said HR laughed about it. OP further advanced their career, idiot co-irker did not.
Load More Replies...My husband got reported to HR for in his cube. He at lunch in is cube as he is not one for socializing with coworkers, literally couldn't stand the ones at that job. When they told him off he said he said it was lunch not company time and they told him he needed to "look like he was working" if in his cube. The woman beside him would d**k on her phone all day and refuse to take calls AT A CALL CENTER but he needed to look like he was working
I had someone complain about me reading at break too. I had to stop because according to management "breaks are rest time and reading is not resting".
"Although, apparently, the person who filed the complaint sounded very believable based on the emotions she had. Luckily, the situation was dropped though. In my case, the complaint was defamatory so my first instinct was to defend myself, especially since I was worried about a violation of privacy as the customer claimed to track down my Instagram," they opened up to Bored Panda.
"I just expressed that the situation made me uncomfortable given it was false, especially considering someone claimed to track down my social media. With complaints over small stuff, they’re usually addressed then swept under the rug."
We also wanted to get the thread author's opinion on why some people file complaints for such weird or even made-up reasons. "In my situation, the woman wanted validation as she knows many people today view the Confederate flag as a racist symbol given the history, so she made up a false situation to try to ruin someone else’s day and probably threaten their source of income," they said.
Had a customer call corporate on me because I told her we didn't carry a certain brand of dog food. I worked at a big pet retail chain. The brand she was looking for was our biggest competitors store brand food. I told her this, even showed her the dog food on the competitors website that clearly said "You'll Only Find X Brand At X Pet Store!" As part of the add.
She didn't want to go to the competitors. So I offered to show her a similar brand; though I did advise her to get the food her dog was used to so she could avoid making her dog sick at its stomach. After arguing with me about "how you should make this right!" I just told her I couldn't help her. She screamed I was rude and unhelpful, then stormed out of the store.
Her reason for calling a complaint to corporate? I wouldn't go to the competitors store (which was about four blocks away from my store) to get the bag of dog food for her since she had already stopped at our store.
Yeah. Her whole "you should make it right" argument was that I should leave my store, use my money to go buy her dog food, then apologize for wasting her time.
My manager pulled me into the office my next shift to tell me the lady had called corporate and why. We both had a huge laugh (apparently the corporate office also found the situation hilarious and told her to get stuffed) and he bought me lunch for not losing my cool on the entitled lady.
My sister was complaining about a bit of a difficult customer once. To be fair, she was. The customer insisted on a refund for this item that she no longer wanted. Yet the store didn't sell that item. Despite the customer agreeing she knew that, my sister went ahead and refunded her! Not sure how you can genuinely 'refund' something that your shop doesn't sell. My sister then complained about the customer's guide dog looking at her 'funny'. Questioned my sister's judgement at this point tbh.
I had a part time job working at a DiY store and had a customer lose their mind because I wouldn't credit a tin of paint they wanted to return. It was the own brand paint of a competitor and literally had the name of the competitor in 2" tall letters across the front of the tin.

I can't give that movie more than one star. When I streamed it in December, I held an empty bowl up to the TV for the popcorn to stream into. Not only did that movie not come with free streaming popcorn, it didn't even come with a free streaming soda!
Load More Replies...Common sense was never that common and, to be honest, these things did always happen. People have always asked stupid things. It's exacerbated by there being more people now and we hear about these things as we can share them online instead of just going home and telling family and friends about the weirdo coming into the shop/office etc. Old newspapers and court documents are good sources for a lot of bizarre stuff like this.
Load More Replies...I was working in a book store some time ago, as a seller on the floor, we were around 3 sellers, each one had a section assigned and if there was no customers, we had to order the books in our section... one coworker complaint because I didn't want to order the books in his section while he was chatting nonsense with the girls of other locations...
At least that's nice to hear a manager who doesn't follow the terrible customer is always right mentality
Home depot once took back tires they didn't even sell. From then on that location had people calling the window company to refund things sold at the store. I worked tier 2 customer service lol
In gradeschool I was sent to the principals office for lying about my name to a substitute teacher. I gave her my real name and the sub just couldn't believe someone would name a kid Wolfgang.
Surely that’s pretty unremarkable considering some of the batshit made up names parents call their kids these days?
I thought it was not uncommon in Germany and Austria at the very least....
Load More Replies...Its a german name. Old, I dont know anyone under 60 being called that, but it is definitely a name
It was Mozart's name right? Surely the sub had to have known that.
Load More Replies...Isn't Wolfgang puck world famous chef? What's wrong with a kid having the same name?
Never heard of them to be honest but I do know Wolfgang is a genuine name. Mozart's preferred names are pretty well known.
Load More Replies...I had a teacher in 5th grade who refused to believe that my name was Jerrica. He called me Jessica for half the year. It got so bad my parents actually told me I didn't have to listen to him because he was talking to Jessica. Eventually they had a meeting with the principal and this teacher to clear it all up. Absolutely ridiculous.
This is exactly why teachers are held in such low esteem. This is just hard-headedness.
Load More Replies...My brother's name on his birth certificate is literally "Billy" but most of his teachers from grade 1 to grade 12 insisted he use "William" on anything he turned in. My dad went to his schools several times, even with the birth certificate, but it happened with a teacher every year. Just proves even teachers can be elitist and stupid.
Typically, it's a southern thing. My legal name is Tommy.
Load More Replies...I mean, in Germany it's a totally normal (if somewhat old-fashioned) name.
Isn't Eddie Van Halen's son named Wolfgang? How about Wolfgang Puck? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?
Got a complaint filed against me by a customer for unnecessary rudeness because I turned down a guy's offer to take me out on a date. He asked me (repeatedly) while I was working. Dude was at least in his mid 40s; I was 16
Leave people alone when working, take no for an answer the first time and be age appropriate - no to ephebophilia.
There shouldn't have even been a 'take no for an answer the first time', there should not even be a first time in this case. Also, I learnt a new word today
Load More Replies...When I was 19, an 80, yes 80 , year old man followed me home, trying to force me to accept the ( still shuddering thirty five years later) antique, still in box lace nightgown his dead wife had saved from her wedding gifts. My mother, upon hearing why there an ancient man POUNDING on the door demanding I come out, answered the door pistol in hand. He told her I was letting men on by smiling at them while I checked them out where I worked. I was in near hysteria, she points her pistol and he left. I still get freaked out thinking about it. My boss thought it was hilarious till the guy did the same thing to my boss's wife.
I got perved on by an elderly man once when having coffee with a friend (about 16 at the time). Was horrible. I was really embarrassed and we were both shy types and so just got up to leave. Then got bullied by some vile teen boys who saw it and went on and on about my 'boyfriend'. That was a lovely day...
Load More Replies...Sadly, this doesn't stop at age 16. I'm 36 and just last night, I was hanging out at the bar where I work after my shift and this guy would NOT take no for an answer. He kept invading my personal space and kept trying to get me to change my mind. The age difference wasn't an issue (he was only two years older than me), it's the fact that he simply would not back the hell off. Thankfully, I was in a safe place so nothing more became of it. But, seriously, if someone tells you "no", especially repeatedly like I did, kindly fûck off. If you don't, you're officially being creepy and most likely scaring the person, no matter your gender.
I hope you got someone to walk you to your car, or walk you home if you didn't drive.

Load More Replies...I had this happen to me too when I was a manager of a shoe store. He came to my store 5x in one day. Pretending to need shoes. Asking me to bring out over 12 pairs of shoes.. THAT HE HAD NO INTENTION OF BUYING! during XMAS on the busiest week of the year (besides black friday) he would ask me dozens of questions about what I thought etc. I had worked a double the day before & was working a double that day. So I had only gotten 6 hours between my shifts. I was EXHAUSTED! This dude says "you're going to laugh but I actually don't need shoes. I was just working up the courage to ask you out because I didn't know if you'd be interested in. But then when you kept smiling at me I figured that you felt the same way..." B***H! IM SMILING BECAUSE IM DOING MY F*****G JOB! ALL I CARE ABOUT IS YOU BUYING THE SHOES & LEAVING SO I CAN GO HELP OTHER PPL! The way the men think service & retail worked wanna f**k them just because they're nice & doing their job.... WE DONT WANNA F**K YOU!
Not that we queers are the pinnacle of Puritanism or decency, but I see so many stories like this on r/AreTheStraightsOK sub.
"I remember making a Reddit post about this same situation on another subreddit and a lady told me the same thing happened to her but with a customer in a MAGA hat. The commenter was nice to her when using the fitting room then the next day the customer with the MAGA hat made up a false story that she denied her and her daughter service and a bra fitting when the store didn’t even do bra fittings. With that situation, there was an obvious lie so her manager blew it off."
According to u/InfiniteCalendar1, it's probably people who are "pretty unhappy" and want validation who file wrongful complaints. "They're following the philosophy of 'the customer is always right,'" they said.
"I will add that I am pretty left leaning so I definitely don’t support the use of the Confederate flag, but when I’m working I’m focused on my job and not my views. I’ve had customers hold views I disagree with, but I don’t engage on that with them. And I definitely believe that if someone gets fired over a ridiculous complaint—especially if it’s defamatory—they should seek legal action."
Old lady said I spray painted some garages near my house, I did in fact not, after a while security footage came out that showed her youngest spray painting the garages….
Surely her little darling wouldn't do something so naughty, it must have been camera trickery.
I hate parents who blind themselves to their child’s shortcomings. Yes, your little darling is a f*****g monster, and having met you, I now know why. Take your brat home and act like a goddamned parent for once! Teach your child how to get along in society, which is not going to continue to coddle them like you do. If you don’t, then believe me, you’re not doing them any favors, and their bad behavior will only escalate. Hope you’ll be happy visiting them in prison.
Load More Replies...I had a customer do this told him his son shoplifted a case of beer from my store, he stormed off pissed, came back his son told him we (me and other coworker working at gas station when it happened) were jealous of his zit covered 15 year old girlfriend and we staged whole thing to have him thrown in jail so we could woo her. My coworker pointed out he was engaged and I had to laugh at him going "dude I am not into pimply teenagers and seeing some one in her 20s." His face turned red this time from embarrassment, then tried to double down to save face, as he left, and refused to return for like 3 weeks hoping we forgot about it lol Also note I lived near that gas station seen that kid once when I walked to work asking me if I had some pot on me, said no, he then proceeded to try to talk me into going with him to see his dealer to get some for him lol. Some grade A parenting right there sigh.
When I met my fiance she lived in a rented house. One date we were at her place and at some point we watched a random YouTube video of a raven saying the F word. We laughed a lot for around 5 minutes unable to talk or do anything but laugh. It was in the middle of the day.
The neighboor wrote an angry letter to the owner of the house telling him "to put us back in line, laughing so much in the middle of the day".
What kind of psycho writes a letter of complain for someone laughing for 5 minutes.
Didn't you know t is illegal in some made-up states to laugh for 5 minutes? 4:59 is the maximum!
I have a co-irker who will laugh like a hyena for anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes, multiple times a day. There have been complaints. The difference? Her laugh carries the full length of the open plan office; she is disturbing other people working (and hysterical laugher multiple times a day means she's not working either). Someone in their own home laughing? Miserable neighbour should go pound dirt. Or eat some.
how dare you? the nerve of you to actually enjoy something in life!
Some neighbours are lovely. Most are arseholes. I wish it weren't so, but it happens over and over.
I had a complaint from a neighbor for calling the police in the middle of the day to turn his tv down. When i called the police i asked if it would be better if i turned my tv down. The police officer said it was a good idea since he could listen to the tv. Then i had to tell him it was my neighbors tv, i have been trying to contact that neighbor but i failed. So the police had to break down his front door. He was my upstairs neighbor.
In a 4 person HR meeting (the other guy, our manager, HR and me) the other guy said I was always angry. The 3 of us looked at him. I asked "why do you say that?". And he said "your face is always red...and angry!".
I'm British, I don't tan well.
I feel your pain my Scottish skin hates the sun for some strange reason
A scottish person, sympathising with a british person! This man is insane, take him away!
Load More Replies...No, your face is red. You are very clearly the angry emoji man in denial phase.
I'm born and bred South African and my skin can't handle the sun either lol. Probably cos my ancestry is of Scottish and German decent 😆
Some people with Gaelic ancestry have acne rosacea. This skin condition is genetic and the face is often red.
The most important thing in these sorts of situations is not to panic! If you did nothing wrong (and odds are that in these cases you’re just a confused victim), then you have nothing to worry about. Of course, it’s yucky and mucky to have someone try and ruin your job or life with false accusations, but the world can be extremely chaotic at times.
Slow down. Breathe. Detach yourself from the situation. What you need to do right now is to figure out what the heck is going on. Go talk to your direct superior, your boss, your HR reps and put all the puzzle pieces together. Explain the situation and be honest. Once everyone’s on the same page, they’ll realize that someone’s just trying to provoke you with weird complaints.
In some cases, however, the situation gets totally out of hand. If someone genuinely has it out for you at work, for whatever reason, then odds are that they’ll go to practically any lengths to try and hurt your career.
In some fringe cases, it’s actually a good idea to seek legal help. Especially if someone’s trying to destroy your reputation and hurt your financial stability. It’s possible to get some free legal consultations. And some lawyers actually do take on cases on a pro bono basis. Know the law. Know your rights. Have someone solid in your corner. And, hopefully, this entire ridiculous situation will be receding in your rearview mirror.
Years ago, back when I worked at a video arcade, there was a kid that had been asking me for free tokens one day. I gave him a few, because we were allowed to give some out each day as "refunds" and it was a slow day so I had extra. He came back a little later for more and then got upset when I didn't give him any more. The next day he came in with his mother and she said that he told her that I took one of the fake plastic guns from one of the "shooter" style video games and threatened to kill her son with it. She told all this to my manager and I was instantly fired on the spot without the chance to say anything. It really sucked because I really liked that job. I got to spend all day around video games, watching people play, repairing the cabinets, which was awesome because I am an avid gamer and it was like a dream come true to work with video games. Ever since i've worked in offices and well... life has been a little more grey since.
An awful lot of bosses in this thread are very quick to fire people without listening to both sides of the story. Pretty disturbing and says a lot about the precarious nature of employment in what I assume is the US.
As an American I’ve seen unnecessary firings more than once. The customer is always right. And most managers would rather save their ace than to put it on the line protecting an employee.
Load More Replies...Sue the boss and mother of the kid for defamation/slander. It cost you your job.
D!ck move, Karen. The boss is the other villain in this story, not listening.
If my kid told me that an arcade worker tried to kill them in the arcade I would doubt that it happened. I would check it out and ask for clarification rather than confront. People are more at ease when you don't accuse them before the facts are in.The boss didn't want any trouble, possibly something else going on in the backroom.
I was at work and a man wanted to use his membership card to get a discount on his popcorn. I asked him for the membership card and he said he didn't have it. No problem, we can pull it up by phone number, but he refused to give it to me. I asked for his name, but apparently that wasn't on the card. Neither was his email address (Which I thought was required) he started getting mad that I was "taking too long" And started screaming about "If I made him go back to his theatre Just to get his card" he was calling corporate. I told him I could look it up from his ticket but needed to go over to my other terminal, but he kept screaming "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE MAKING ME WALK BACK TO MY THEATRE TO GET MY F*****G CARD" I told him I wasn't and I just needed the ticket stub, but it fell on deaf ears nd he kept screaming and carrying on. He was throwing an absolute tantrum and said I was "Wasting his time and taking too long" even though I was ALREADY STANDING AT THE OTHER TERMINAL.
He complained that I made him show his membership card to give him the discount that was only on the card, and just use the card even though he refused to let me look it up for him.
It was the dumbest f*****g thing ever. People will seriously just come out in public just to start s**t with cashiers. I really want to know what goes on in these people's heads to purposefully make themselves angry.
“Boy I feel like shouting abuse at an underpaid worker today so that I can feed my own fragile ego and self-worth!”
And get something I don’t deserve just because I say so. W T Actual F?
Load More Replies...Suggest he genuinely gets a membership card if he's that desperate for discounted popcorn.
A very similar story happened to me, I needed to look up a client’s previous appointment history because she claimed we’d made a mistake on her oil change bill and owed her money, but I couldn’t search her file up because apparently her name and phone number were “none of my business” 😂 and she refused to let me near her car to check her VIN so I could look it up that way, because her teenage son was in the car and she didn’t want me “disturbing her child.” 😅 It turned out she’d never been here before, she was just trying to scam a free oil change by seeing how angry she could get before we gave in to her. (We told her she was never, ever welcome back to our small business lol.)
Load More Replies...this definitely was in usa. In my country the security guard would remove you from the store. Plus chances are it would be a race thing so you'd get accused of being racist to some poor underpaid person as well.
My late husband would act this insane at times, but it turned out he was having brain bleeds and was totally governed by pain.
How about going to a doctor? Groundbreaking, I know.
Load More Replies...Entitled people think they can bully others into getting their way. I have a family member like this. She will have her mind made up that someone is going to give her a discount, even though she's not entitled to one, and she is 100% willing to throw a fit, and take it as far as she needs to in order to get her way.
Out of the blue, a complete stranger who had just been released from state prison sued me in family court asking for visitation with our 10 y/o non-existent child. Apparently he had gone to a party at “my” house and “we” had a one night stand in my basement bedroom (my basement is not finished). When “I” got pregnant I promised to have an abortion but did not, and now he was ready to step up and be a dad! How did he find me? He couldn’t remember an exact address so he went through my neighborhood on Google Maps and was “sure” it happened in my house. For weeks he refused to believe he had the wrong person until I went to the police station and had an officer email a family photo to him while he had him on the phone and vouch that it was me in the photo.
How in the world did anyone get to the point of paperwork on this without visiting the woman and seeing she didn't even have a 10 year old? Ridiculous.
Load More Replies...This is where restraining orders need to be granted and vigorously enforced
This one bothered me so I looked it up to see if there was more. From further down the comments: "[the photo was] From 2 years after he said this happened, of me holding my newborn in a hospital bed with my husband and then-12 y/o daughter by my side. Kids not recognizable and called into doubt that 2 years earlier I was living with my parents, sleeping in a basement bedroom, and having sex with random strangers. Cop said “is this [OP]? Because she is standing in front of me right now and I can assure you it’s her”. He stammered something about me trying to pull a fast one and he would prove it, but by the end of the conversation he ran of gas and finally admitted he had it wrong."
My ex-sister-in-law swore in family court that my son had taken her son (who was 10) to buy crack on a spring break visit. It was a mess. We had to prove that my graduate school son was in Europe at the time.
I assume the passport stamps proved pretty good proof.

I had something like this happen to my wife. She started getting phone calls from prison, and a guy who spoke no English was looking for Christina (not my wife's name). She kept saying there was nobody by that name living here, but he only spoke Spanish, my wife only speaks English. Finally one day he called while I was home, so I spoke with him. He got upset, thinking I was with Christina, but I told him he had the wrong number. He didn't believe me at first, but after a conversation he finally understood that his girlfriend gave him the wrong number. I felt bad for the guy.
Yah, I'm not sending a picture of myself to some psychotic prisoner....
Should have just sent a letter saying you'd countersue for 10 years of child support.
Agreed. The police would never send him a picture and theres no way any court would entertain this.
Load More Replies...While these stories shared by redditors are amusing and confusing, they also highlight an important problem: taking up everyone’s time with these weird complaints means that genuine complaints can get lost in a pile of documents for a long, long while.
And, let’s face it, there are real things to complain about at work and as a customer. If someone’s harassing you, making inappropriate jokes, and bullying you in a workplace setting, it’s essential to put a stop to this. Filing an official complaint is a good initial step, Chron writes. First, put it in writing, submit it in person, and schedule a meeting with the head of HR.
Meanwhile, if you’re complaining about unfair pay, bad working conditions, and unequal treatment, then it’s best to contact a government organization about what’s happening. If you’re a member of a union, they can help you with this.
From a boss’ perspective, it’s essential that you don’t immediately dismiss an employee's complaint right out the gate, according to Traliant. Don’t be too quick to make judgments either way. Take the time to understand the situation so you can respond appropriately.
My husband is a dentist. A new patient reported him to the board of dentistry for recommending that she get her teeth cleaned. I still laugh when I think about it.

That depends very much on whether you are going to be charged extra for the x-rays. With my dentist, everything that he can do himself is included in the price. If he has to send it out (like making crowns and dentures) it is extra. He does x-rays every few years or if there is a problem. Probably why I've been going to the same practice since I've had teeth!

I once was told there was a high-level (manager and up) meeting being held about me… on account of my emails being written too well.
:/
I can write quick, well-worded emails, and someone in upper management thought that I must have been spending too much time writing my emails, possibly as a means of appearing to be superior to others.
I work with some people who can barely string a sentence together. They say my emails are “dead posh”. No, it’s just written English - not the word salads you churn out without a thought.
I type really fast (mom was an English teacher and made sure I could type correctly). Someone came up to me while I was working on a report and told me to stop fake typing. I told him I was actually typing and asked how he thought people types. He held up his two index fingers and said, "with these." He just assumed everyone only typed with two fingers on a computer.

At a previous job a colleague also took offense to the way I wrote my emails. She complained that I chose difficult words on purpose so nobody could understand what I was saying and that signing off with "kind regards" was clearly my way of talking down to everyone...The difficult words in question were "redundant" and "concise". We were both English teachers.

I see it as a supervisory problem. I worked at a job I loved, worked hard, kept 'below the radar', and was recognized as competent in my specialty. The peers that base their self-worth on comparison to others publicly ridiculed whatever I did even though they had no involvement in my activities. The administrators allowed this to go unchecked. I finally left. Oh well.

A girl reported my son for assaulting her in school. She claimed that her neck was still hurting her the night after the "assault." Now, my son is autistic and at the time had an aide that followed him around everywhere. Even setting aside the fact that my son isn't violent (he's more likely to break down into tears than actually fight), why didn't his aide see this assault? Upon looking into the matter we had our answer. The normal aide was out for the day and the substitute aide left our son to get his lunch in the cafeteria while he (the aide) got his own lunch. Now, our son's IEP specifically stated that he was not to be left alone in the cafeteria. The noise and chaos wreck havoc with him. So the aide leaving him alone in that situation was a breach of his IEP which could mean we could initiate legal action if we wanted. Furthermore, our son claimed that he saw the girl, walked up to her and tapped her in the shoulder to get her attention in order to say hi. This was corroborated by security camera recordings. We were told that technically our son broke school rules with the shoulder tap. We countered that they were free to punish him for a shoulder tap but then we'd go after the school for violating his IEP that put him in the situation to begin with. In the end, he was simply reminded not to touch other people even if he thought it was a friendly manner. Meanwhile, I don't think the girl was punished at all even though she had been going around school telling people that our son assaulted her. (Including telling her sister who was mildly friendly with my son, trying to break that up.) She was brought in for a meeting where she reiterated that she was assaulted and her neck still hurt. Then she was shown the shoulder tap video. At most, she might have gotten a warning, but that was it.
Anyone making false allegations should receive the same punishment that the other person would have got if it had been a genuine complaint. Might put more people off from trying to ruin someone's life.
While I agree that it's not right for people to get away with this sort of thing, you'd have to be able to prove that the allegations were false too though (like with this video) otherwise actual victims wouldn't want to come forward for fear of being punished if they lost the case. Although I think the accused would be able to sue for defamation if there was a legitimate case to be made. A not-guilty verdict doesn't mean innocent of the crime, just that there wasn't enough evidence to convince a jury (or the jury just didn't care about the outcome and gave a random verdict to get done faster)

I get an uncomfortable feeling and fear that the girl thought she could get away with saying anything and be believed over the boy, because he is autistic. Or would she have reacted the same way if anyone else had tapped her on the shoulder? I feel for him, because it is hard enough for those of us who are autistic to navigate social rules without this nonsense. It is common for neurodivergent children to receive a lot of criticism and scrutiny at the best of times. I hope he's doing well.

Ah american school rules. NO TOUCHING! No wonder y'all have so many school shootings with all the rules that make kids grow into emotionally dysfunctional teenagers.
Sue the school!! Your child was put in danger by the inept aid being unresponsible!
Something else to keep in mind is discretion. Try to keep the information contained for the sake of everyone’s privacy. That way, you’ll prevent gossip from circulating in the workplace. Lastly, keep in mind that complaints are simply one type of communication (albeit carrying some potentially serious consequences). So don’t actually punish employees for filing them! Otherwise, you’ll end up creating a massive gap between management and all the other workers. And that’s not something that leads to a healthy workplace environment.
Working in retail I once said "you guys have a great day" I was reported by an elderly women who objected to not being addressed as "mam" she also objected to "have a great day" because she had come into the aquarium store because her fish was dead and she was upset that someone would tell her to "have a great day" when her fish had died.
This is yet another example of the utter failure of the crystal ball industry - i swear their delivery service is terrible - because without this tool *how the f***k were they supposed to know the inner workings of your life and the death of your fish*?!!! The same goes for the choice of title (although I understand "guys" is location dependent - not universally accepted). Although, I'm sorry about the fish, it's not nice to lose a pet.
I agree with you. I'd probably go with 'have a good day' as that avoids that issue re guys/mam. Neither are used much in my country though, to be fair.

Ugh I hated this. The worst I ever got was when this woman came to my register. I smiled and gave the usual company mandated greeting. She glared at me. At a McDonald’s a few years ago I tried to order a plain cheeseburger. I specifically stated, “Just meat, cheese & bun”. It took 3 tries with me having to repeat “I need meat on my cheeseburger.”
This one’s tricky, an Italian cappuccino and an Aussie one have different froth levels, aussies having a giant bubble of foam, so either she’s an idiot or was expecting less foam in the tradition form
I hate when the 'Barista' says "would you like chocolate on top?", my standard reply is "If I wanted a frothy coffee I would have asked for one", at which point you find that barista's will sy, "I know but we have to ask" (because so many idiots ask for a 'Cappuccino' without chocolate), while the 'Baristas' will say "so do you want chocolate or not", it's a sign of the times!

My brothers neighbor is a retired curmudgeon who edges his lawn with hand scissors. His yard is his hobby & that’s ok. He has a tree on his side of the property line, which causes the leaves to fall into his yard, my brothers driveway and my brothers yard. He rakes his yard 3 to 4 times a day in the fall. Inevitably, the leaves that fall onto my bros property blow back onto his. He took my brother to court for the damages, time & expenses of having to collect leaves from his own tree that originally fell into my brothers property. He wanted my bro forced to rake them up ASAP, at least twice daily. The ruling was he had to take responsibility for every part of his own tree no matter where the leaves landed & pay my brothers legal costs.

I got hired at AT&T right before Covid hit, so I ended up getting laid off around June 2020. Being that I worked from home (I work software QA) I had to mail back all the hardware they’d sent me— iPhones, iPads, an Alexa, a Smart TV, etc. Anyway, I pack it all up, take it to the local UPS and mail it off with the pre-paid labels they’d sent me. I wash my hands of the situation and assume that it’s over and done with. A day later I get a call from the HR lady asking why I had sent them, and I quote, “a 12 pound box of dirty socks.” At first I think this is some poorly thought out prank— but they are dead serious and threatening legal charges as this was well over $500 worth of stuff which counts as grand larceny… AKA a felony in my state. So I look back at the prepaid labels, which were addressed to my boss’s private residence rather than AT&T proper. So that’s a tad off. Plus twelve pounds of dirty socks is a lot to wrangle up and you’d really have to go to great lengths to make that happen between getting the labels and shipping it off. So they keep calling me and threatening me for hours— so I call my lawyer, and I call the UPS to make sure they have CCTV footage of me mailing everything off during my previous visit— I then tell the s**t heads at AT&T to reach out to my lawyer if they have any other questions. And then… “miraculously” they found all the “missing” equipment five minutes later. The head of my team probably just wanted to sell that s**t on Craigslist or something and make me his patsy. But as soon as they got a sniff of litigation, the stuff just “magically appeared.” A felony pretty much ruins your whole life in the US. F**k that guy and F**K AT&T.
It’s so sad that you have to be extra careful to keep receipts and evidence of the things you do for fear of being accused of all kinds of wrong doing
When I returned some equipment to at&t I was warned by the lady at the UPS store to keep my receipt. Apparently it's pretty common in my area for them to charge you for equipment you've returned, she said they came after one customer 3 months later and they had to pull video to prove at&t was lying.
My boyfriend was an executive at att. He always said it stood for "America's Thugs and Thieves."
Oh lawd, I used to work for a 3rd party company that took inbound calls for AT&T. All I have to say is they are a s**t service provider and I would never, ever, never consider them for my provider.
I had to return an e scooter because it would not charge. Before and during packing it into the box I took pictures. The company I'd got the scooter from refused my £500 refund saying I'd scratched and broken the scooter. I contacted Amazon and included all the photos which showed zero damage. Amazon asked the seller to send proof of damage multi times but they wouldn't. They just kept insisting I'd sent back a broken scooter so I'm not entitled to my refund. Amazon refund me and removed that company from its seller list.

My neighbors used to play very loud music every night until 4 or 5 in the morning. I finally got sick enough of it and called the cops one night at 2. They came and talked to the neighbors, who promised to turn down the music, but didn't. I gave them awhile, then about 3, I called the police again. They came and talked to the neighbors again. Since then, the neighbors turn their music either down or off at a reasonable time. When my parole officer came by yesterday, I mentioned it, because I had been shocked and pleased that the cops listened to me and responded. My parole officer informed me I'm not allowed to call the police for any reason without informing him first.

Are they not allowed to have fire pits in that area? I mean, there are some restrictions around here (like you can't just randomly start a fire in your yard with no containment), especially in particularly dry seasons, but just making a fire in general is actually pretty normal.
I’d have offered them some BBQ, get them even more or your side, then ask them to go and have a chat with the neighbour!
Being too nice. I worked inside a coffee shop that was inside a grocery store during this time. Man walks in and I greet him and ask him what he’d like to order. This was when I worked at the same place as my wife and was very careful to keep my nose clean. That was the last straw, I updated my resume and was gone shortly after.
Shouldn't the person who told the joke be in some sort of trouble? Jokes of a sexual nature fall under the umbrella of sexual harassment in the HR world.
If I were in OP's shoes I'd turn that right around and make a sexual harrassment complaint, claiming that my laughter was forced and she always cornered me with inapropriate jokes. Let's see how she'll like that.

When I was a teenager working at an ice cream store, a secret shopper wrote that I was "friendly but did not smile." This write up was posted on the bulletin board like it was a scarlet letter of shame and the manager talked to me about smiling more. 30 years later, I am still friendly but unsmiling.
This isn't a criticism but just a different pov, something to consider maybe? As someone who knows people who are deaf, an initial smile can go down very well as it can speak volumes to those who cannot hear a friendly tone. That said, no-one should be expecting anyone to walk around grinning from ear to ear all the time and as long as you do your job well that's enough for me personally.
Is there a reason why the people advocating for people who do not have to smile, who are woman pointing out the probably often sexist remark got downvoted and comment hidden. They are right. I have never had a male co worker in the service industry be told that, but have personally been told it as a woman

I would much rather be helped by someone like this that some syrupy patronizing person. Be courteous, professional, and good at what you do, ideal.
As a former mystery shopper, many scripts require very specific behaviors to be evaluated "Did the employee smile?" "Did they greet you Enthusiastically?" Often I thought they were pleasant and professional but did not meet the specific target behaviors and I got tired of having to be the bad guy just answering questions truthfully. And they WILL get reprimanded for not suggestive selling specific items. That was a frequent requirement for a good score.

Friend was contract engineer for tech giant. If you are unfamiliar with the concept, contractors are second class citizens. If there's a perk employees get, assume that it is off limits for contractors. She did some above and beyond work for an employee, so that employee took her to the admin's desk and let her select a piece of candy as a "thank you". (candy jar and contents were paid for by the company). The admin witnessed this and reported her for stealing company property. That doesn't mean the person reporting someone for being given a single piece of candy isn't an a**hole, though.
Don't get me started on this. We have something called IR35 in the UK, which makes life very difficult for a lot of contractors from a pay and taxation point of view. All the work, but none of the benefits.
Load More Replies...S**t this reminds me of when I was 6th grade and my art teacher became f*****g delusional and began accusing my whole class of stealing a flavored tootsie roll (a tiny one no less). She was deadset on punishing us for "stealing" so she locked us in her class room (only one door worked and she locked it so we were literally stuck with her) and tried keeping us until the end of the day. My 6th grade teacher knew something was wrong when we didn't come back 10 minutes after the bell and rescued us. Next day she discovered that the kindergarten class she taught before us had stolen it, didn't even get an apology (she did much more but my mom's complaints fell on deaf ears).
Load More Replies...I had a similar situation with a security guard that was a contractor. I used to get early to work and we would be talking for those 20 minutes while my colleagues would arrive. I would always offer the guy a coffee or a juice, as he was a nice guy doing a boring job early morning, and tbh nobody talked to him other than me... I got a complaint for offering the guy coffee/juice while at work, and they also complained to him for accepting those. That also ended our brief friendship unfortunately. Being punished for being friendly
The separation of perks, at least in the US, goes back to a consultant at Microsoft suing for severance (because he'd been treated like perm while there) and somehow winning. The next day, my agency went to every site to have us sign "I know I'm not a perm emoloyee of the client" letters and all our peeks were taken away.
Pizza! Pizza solves everything! At least thats what they think in the medical field
Microsoft was sued because they used to treat contractors like employees, in the 1990s. Now all contractors can only work a nine-month contract and then have to take at least a three-month break.
"contractors are second class citizens" not even that - place I've worked at we literally had to sit an exam on "Gifts and Gratuities" basically even if the places we are contracting to are giving something out to the public, even outside of the workplace, then you are still not allowed to accept it (and you see a fellow contractor doing so you are supposed to (legally required to) report them. Penalty instant dismissal of course for theft and/or fraud. One woman even got called out on a cup of coffee made in the employee only kitchenette that her husband (who worked in house) gave her (fortunately warning only) We could not take ice from the ice makers, use work's fridge or microwave, I'm surprised they let us use the water taps and the toilet paper.
I was training a new employee (I was early 20s, she was late 40s) and I told her that if we finished our work a few minutes before break, we could stand around as long as we were available to customer questions. She told on me and I got written up the next day. Now I only train exactly what we’re supposed to do.
I once had a girl show up to work still drunk and reeking of alcohol, so we sent her home to re-freshen up, and she didn’t come back for 2 1/2 hours. The shop owner was out of town that weekend, so we were all chatting in detail about how frustrated we were with the owner, until it was time for the store to open. When the owner returned the next day, she ratted us out for talking about the owner behind her back. The stinking drunk girl who couldn’t even work told on US when we covered for HER.
I don't lie often but this would be a situation I would lie in. I would have told leaders I have no idea what she's talking about, and it's ridiculous on her second day she's already started workplace drama.
I almost gotten written up at work because a local radio DJ came into the store and “I treated them like all the other customers” as in I didn’t fall all over her “celebrity”.
Be happy to treat even the most famous celebrity exactly the same as all the other customers. I don't really get or want to fall in line with the attitude towards 'celebrity' to be honest. You're not better or more important because you work in an industry that gets you well known, that's my opinion anyway.
It's what you get when they get blinded by their own fame and wants more of it. It's not common here in Denmark (I have dealt with a whole host of famous celebrities through my work a as a trucker) And living close to an area where many of these celebs had a summer cottage, I even got on a friendly term with several of them because of bumping into them all the time. And in all my years, I have only met one drummer of a very famous band who acted very haughty and entitled, only to be caught in it by the lead singer of the band and being torn a new one for it. But at least it has to be said that he came around eventually when he got used to being a celeb, and when I later made a delivery to his home, he remembered me and apologized and insisted on making it up to me by having a cool beer on his terrace while solving the worlds problems as we call smalltalk here in Denmark.
Load More Replies...Actual celebrities will most often be grateful to be treated like a normal person
Radio DJ...there is a good chance she might not even known what he looked like as opposed to someone you see on TV like a local news anchor.
I would imagine most celebrities doing every day life things would appreciate just being themselves and not being fawned over and stared at. After all, they are regular people just like you and me.
Vincent Price came to a show at the museum where I worked, and then stood in line with everyone else to purchase a catalog. He was quite charming but asked for no favors. Ditto Haley Mills, who was offered the chance for a private tour, but chose to walk through the exhibits alone, no makeup and in jeans, so no one really recognized her. Clint Eastwood was offered a preopening tour as well, but he declined to ask the staff to come in early just for him. Said he'd go when the show was in LA, as no one would blink an eye at him there. Really famous people are often really nice to others.
My husband worked at a sports memorabilia store when he was in college, and the comedian Carrot Top came in the store. My husband greets him with "Hey Carrot Top." Later that day his boss called him into his office and scolded him for talking to a customer like that. Someone did not know Carrot Top was his stage name and thought it was a slur against redheads. 😂
I don’t listen to the local radio. I don’t know what they look like, I don’t know what they sound like. And I just don’t care. We usually have the today’s hits station on at work and I’ll hear the same songs twice in a six hour shift. But I guess it’s hard to have variety when you only add 10 new songs a year.
I've met celebrities at my job and they often are thankful you don't fawn over them.
The majority of real celebrities (I’ve met a few working in international airports, and high end malls.) are THRILLED to be treated like Joe Down the Road. I’ve not, for oh, 30 years, interested in celebrity though I buy trash mags (gimme a good true crime). So, I don’t recognize them and treat them like plain people, and they buy more🤣! But how my co-workers felt about that was always fun (really). One time, I was working in a high-end menswear store. A customer came in, it was my turn, so, I went and greeted him. He had his, maybe 10 yr old , maybe younger son.. He wanted loafers for the boy; I measured him and he was one size too small for our inventory . Thank me and left as I turned away. “Do you know who that was?” Blank stare from me. “That was the Secretary of State! Didn’t you notice the men in black?” I hadn’t. Howling laughter. I thought it was just as funny.
Sorry, thought one thing to mention. I know who was the most humbling person I have ever served was a lady who never told me her name, but it was on her credit card. Black history month has just ended, this lady never gets brought up. Look up Myrlie Evers. There is a very good movie with Whoopi’s Goldberg as her. But bring your tissues and handkerchiefs; you’ll need them. Myrlie Evers.

I was a recent new hire, and transferred between divisions. I responded to my new Managing Director with an affirmative “Yes, Ma’am” when she gave me some new tasks during a meeting. She reported me to HR for sexual harassment and insubordination. I am from the Texas. This is how I was taught to show respect.
My old boss once said “Guys and gals” and a woman reported him to HR for sexual harassment. ???
I work in call center jobs; some of the younger than me(59f) will have a hissy over just, say, an 86 yr old man called me Honey!!!!!!! Sorry, you can call me what you like as long as it’s not profane, or late to dinner. Letting an elder call me honey or dear. I’ll get a better sale than they do! Some of these co-workers will HANG UP on someone who has called them something that was offensive and harassing, said they. Listening to the call, the customer just called them sweetie and that was intended to be racist, dismissive, belittling. Chicks, I’m only 59, and I rarely remember a name past hearing hearing it. Sometimes I just use honorific titles, sometimes I let them know I have forgotten. But, titles like Sir and Ma’am are now GENDERIST. So, people use endearments hoping to not offend. Suggestion to all in retail and call centers, and wait staff? To keep yourself from becoming offended just remember, Don’t Take It Personal Until They Make It Personal.
Load More Replies...Using Ma'am is more common in some regions compared to others. In some regions it can sound edgy. But not worth a complaint.
Most are taught as a form of respect, you can always ask someone politely not to call you that. It generational, cultural and local. I get called Miss first name, at work by kids and parents and by coworkers at schools, it's just how it's done
Some people in the US seem to have serious problems…. It looks like you can report anyone on tiny irrelevant things. There are far more serious problems in the world.
I work at Walmart A customer complained that I was on my phone the whole time. If you work at Walmart or any retail place. then you know we have those stupid android handhelds. I use it to make sure grown adults aren’t stealing and to do age checks and stuff. My manger looked at the video and was like yeah. That’a not a phone it’s just something she needs to do her job… Customer just couldn’t comprehend that.
And even if you were on your phone and if they didn't need your help, why did they care?
I seen people do that with telzons with the gun design, its like what the hell no this isn't a cool scifi phone case I am scanning barcodes doing this weeks order...
A coworker hugged me when I gave her a birthday present. Later I was pulled into my supervisor's office because someone reported us for "inappropriate PDA."
My husband and I worked for the same call center and were told not to hug or do anything in the building because someone had reported us for hugging goodbye in the breakroom. The guy who warned us thought it was stupid but knew there were some higher-ups who might take issue so it was a friendly warning, not a dock against us
I don't know if anything ever got filed, but when I worked at a divorce firm, I had a woman call because she wanted to press charges against her son's ex-girlfriend and her friends. I asked for more details (so I could tell her we didn't practice that area of law but she should call, say, a civil attorney or something). She told me that this old girlfriend, she was messing around with her son's body and stole his sperm. Me: Wat. Her: She and her friends--I don't like these girls--they went to where my son's body was and they messed around with it and stole his sperm. Me: Where his body was? Her: Where his body was. In the cemetery. She's a thief. Me: Uh, try a civil attorney, we can't help you.
Translation: My late son's girlfriend is pregnant. She says it's my grandchild, but I know my sweet, innocent angel would *never* have defiled himself with the pleasures of the flesh. Therefore, she must have stolen sperm from his body after he died. It's the only explanation.
To be a bit more optimistic, she could be going through hella grief and trauma over a sons death and genuinely mean well. I'm not sure if that's optimistic though...
Load More Replies...So, to be clear, she's accusing the girls of necrophilia? Also, don't think that there's just residual sperm after someone dies, and even if there were it definitely wouldn't be viable at that point 🤢
It's may not be necrophilia but rather just defilement of a corpse. Necrophilia would be if they were having sex (which doesn't include HJs (not sure if BP would sensor that).).
Load More Replies...I've been a paralegal for like 15 years and we've had people call wanting to sue someone over the most bizarre sh*t.
It is possible to extract sperm after death. There's probably an optimum time scale, though.
Yeah, generally within the 12 hours immediately after, but usually the 'death erection' and summary evacuation of fluids in general empties any immediately ready for release - so she'd had to have done so at a morgue or hospital, but still frighteningly enough - not impossible
Load More Replies...I once had a coworker whose husband was Jewish, and she took every opportunity to mention this fact and talk as if she were an expert on Jewishness. Having many Jewish family members myself, I figured that since each of us had Jewish loved ones it'd be a topic we could bond over. When she talked about her husband and her cross-cultural Jewish experience, I'd relate my own experiences with my family. It wasn't long before I was called into HR and told that she was "highly offended" by how I talked about Jewish people. Not a word I said about my family or Jewish people/culture in general was anything but the highest praise and affection. The HR manager explained that this particular coworker was a consistent pain in her a*s, always coming to her to complain about being offended by one thing or another. In this case, she didn't think any genuine offense was taken, but rather that the woman felt special for having a Jewish husband and that me also having Jewish family must have made her feel like she wasn't special anymore. Needless to say I was not reprimanded in any way, and the coworker in question was eventually fired. Probably for being a constant chunk of snot in HR's cornflakes.
That last line though ... I need to remember that and use it sometime.
As a former HR worker on a BP level, I can say that employee complaints go to the bottom of the pile. Sorry, but I was too busy refuting umpteen unemployment claims while researching large scale case and looking for the proper documentation to accompany it to have time to hear about high-school level BS. Literally, BOTTOM OF THE PILE.
Seen that I got outed for my PTSD after it got too hard to keep secret coworker going threw a "nasty divorce" saw it as me trying to one up her like it was competition to whose life sucked worse, and started making my life a living hell, then her best freind also a drama queen who had a husband who had gout but couldn't stay out the ER for more then 5 months kept eating s**t he wasn't uppose to over and over. That woman outed me to my family after HR couldn't do anything to me, and told my family that shopped at the store not only I had PTSD I was trying to keep private but she told them all I was lying about it to get VA disabilty check, its like woman I don't get VA money for this, and I spent a week unpaid in the mental hospital over this, I am losing money from my struggle with PTSD. But both were pissed people carred about me more then them at work.
I would think that someone outting your health to your family would be considered harassment. It may be worth it to check your state's labor laws.

My manager called me into her office and said, “What the hell is going on?!”
I dated a guy many years ago who had a young son and lived at home with his dad, stemom and brother. The mother of his son started dating the brother so she was often there with the kid. I have never been one to make a big fuss over babies plus it was awkward with the ex there. Well, she accused me of being neglectful and abusive to her son. I thought I was going to get taken to court but my ex defended me. He knew she was being ridiculous.
A friend of mine had an eerily similar experience when she was dating her now husband. It went on for years and my friend nearly lost her job due to the drama of it all.
I love how “stealing narcotics” and ”strangling grandmas” are considered “small”. Sounds like a great place to work!
Wait, a nurse stealing narcotics or strangling an old woman was the small stuff?
And let's say I did strangle GMA. If it has nothing to do with work they shouldnt be able to fire you.
Actually they can. OP is a nurse and nurses can get fired for that because they have to work with people and hospitals and doctors do not tolerate that. It can also make it to where they lose their medical license and can no longer work as a nurse.

I was processing customer returns and a fishing rod had paperwork saying it wouldn't catch fish, another one said their boat was too tippy. Not sure if it was the same guy
Too tippy makes a lot of sense to me. I grew up using dozens of canoes and kayaks and some are unstable to a fault. They seem fine until weight shifts and it can get dicey quick. Any small craft can have a poor design for individual needs.
One of my favorite podcasts is "Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet". Brother and sister team read aloud 1 star reviews of various things with dramatic background music.
I worked at McDonalds. A man put a complaint in because I wouldn’t let him in after we’d already shut.
I used to visit Not Always Right website and it amazed me the number of stories posted there about customers who couldn't understand the concept of "Store Closed", even sometimes smashing their way in
I used to work for Dollar General and had a lady come up 10 minutes after I'd locked the door wanting a Snickers bar. I told her no repeatedly and she had the audacity to say she'd come on as soon as I unlocked the door to let the other customers out.

I have a horrible story that still get me when I think about it. 25 years ago I worked all through Christmas in retail. On Christmas eve, we closed at midnight to allow for last minute shopping as this area had a median household income of 20k per year. So we're literally cashing out the last customers and opening the door singularly for them to not allow anyone else in. I saw a man through the glass with a wad of cash in his hand with tears in his eyes. I imagine he was a father because the look of devastation on his face. I literally begged to stay open and let him shop and my manager disallowed it. 25 years later and I still think of this and get sad.
At an old job... (pre cell phones) if I was going to be working late, I would call my wife so she would not worry. I lived outside the city, so it was a long distance call. Cost about 25 cents. I got called into an HR meeting for "stealing company resources" and was made to write a check for $33 in long distance calls. I never worked late again.. projects fell behind, work did not get completed, I refused to stay a minute past quitting time. When manager tried to reprimand me for missed deadlines, I put a copy of the check on her desk with my resignation. I had already found a better paying job.
I work in IT and I was in a bank once, checking some problem with the computers... in that city, the banks closed at 1 PM... I was at the reception desk around 3 PM and a woman came charging at the main door... we looked at her with wide eyes as she was screaming us to let her go in... we told her the bank was closed since 2 hours ago, she screamed and insulted some more and storm off... some people just needs a chair massage to their face...
My mom got an angry message on eBay about her handmade wedding dresses for 18" dolls promoting child marriage, because American Girl dolls are only supposed to be 11. The woman insisted she should have a disclaimer to or something that says "for pretend play ONLY" to clear up this ambiguity. That was more than 10 years ago and we still crack up about it.
Sadly, 18” plastic child brides are all too common these days 😂
Ah yes, because someone who wants to marry off a literal baby (both of my kids were over 18 inches tall WHEN THEY WERE BORN) would obey a random disclaimer lmao
I have seen on Facebook Marketplace MULTIPLE times where someone makes realistic baby dolls and people comment how horrible it is that these people are selling babies 😂🤣 Someone ultimately calls them out on it but it's hilarious that they think someone is selling babies on Facebook!
had someone complain to me that the sticker i sold (clearly labeled as a sticker multiple times) was a sticker and not a pin
I believe Barbie was 16 or 17. I had a lot of wedding dresses for her.
After 7 years in the same company wearing the same kind of clothes, some jealous female co-workers went to the HR this summer to complain that I dress like a w***e...
Maybe in those 7 years OP maintained her figure and the other ones didn't, so they get jealous and logged in a complaint, as the b*tches they are...
Must be my coworker. Dead a*s watched this woman hike through a foot of snow in thigh high stiletto boots and fish nets. To arrive at her commercial banking job that isn't even customer facing. Watched this happen for 5 years straight every single winter. Made me laugh every time.
Bodies change over time. What once stayed covered sometimes shifts and becomes uncovered. (All I can think of is one Halloween a department of 50-60yo women dressed as "retired Hooters waitresses". The tube socks with an orange in the toe pinned under their shirts was eye-catching.)
I jokingly told co-workers I was feeling disgruntled that day. The administrative assistant (whose job I was actively training for) overheard me and reported me to the boss. I had to have a sit down meet with them both and got written up for not "boosting team morale". Another time the same AA went into the bathroom after me and noted that I did not refill the toilet paper while I was in there. Again, had to have a meeting over it. I was SO happy when she left.
EDIT: I was a large public bathroom with 4 stalls. I didn't leave the place without any toilet paper. One of the stalls was running low and apparently I should have checked it and put more rolls in.
I was told by my boss I was disgruntled, as I did not run around with a smile ( I was swamped due to teammates not pulling their weight). I assured him I would be more "gruntled" from now on.
I was told I was "too negative" because I point out possible issues in proposed projects. "We're going to change THIS. It'll affect A, B, and C.". Me - wont D also be affected? TBH, I thought seeing the big picture was a useful attribute. It's certainly helped us be proactive.

A senior banker called up my recruiter with a list of complaints. The recruiter called me on weekend mornings to discuss in lengthly detail the banker’s complaints. Found out I was removed from supporting that banker simply because he didn’t like my athletic figure. He was stupid enough to go into too much detail with HR and got put on a 4 month probation. This didn’t stop his behavior he still complained openly because he was convinced he had a right to complain about his female assistant’s figure.
Paying that much attention to a subordinate's physique is the problem, even if he liked it. Perhaps especially if he liked it.

Well, when she returned a video titled "1001 Nights of Sapphic Delights", that might have clued you in.
I was a cashier for a while. T. I am white. There was a black woman in line I asked her for an ID because her credit card wasn't signed. Senior engineer accused me of bullying him. For months I made myself available for a couple hours a week to answer this guys questions to help him up to speed. I continue to help him when he starts to get assigned work and I essentially help him start 2 projects from scratch to 85% completion before the incident. Handheld through every line of code, every word typed thinking he'd understand better if I explained the code in detail. After the 2nd one I tell him to at least attempt the work before coming to me. Messages me 2 days before his work is due for help. He shares his screen, searches through some directories, claims that he lost his code and asks for help again. I tell him I don't think he even attempted it, how unprofessional it is to not version control or check in code into a repo, and hang up on him. This man has been in the industry more than twice as long as I have (me 7.5 years, him 15+), received ample training (2 engineering classes), 8 months to get up to speed, and still cannot complete simple programming assignments. Get a call from HR for bullying. The worst part is in the claim he says I did nothing to help him, and only made him feel bad for not knowing how to complete his work. Says that I "didn't train him right" as if a senior level engineer needs someone to "train" them to be a programmer when it wasn't even my responsibility to begin with. Helped someone then they throw me under the bus when I stop helping.
Always document conversations like these with a follow-up email. Like, "Just a reminder of what we discussed..." You've got to cover your a*s when you're dealing with one.
Used to do appliance installs for a big-box hardware store in college. Disgruntled assistant, going through some life-problems (I gather), upon returning to the store, went to our manager and claimed I had thrown my channellock pliers at him at a nearby install, then left him there and made him walk to the store. The manager stares at him for a moment, then mentions he was watching for us on the store cameras (seeing us both getting out of the cab of the truck I'd drove us BOTH back in), and then reaches under the desk. "Oh, tyrridon, here's your channellocks. You left them at the customer's house that flooded themselves yesterday." Manager then proceeds to stare assistant into oblivion, who then slinks back to the install bay, where he tries to convince coworkers that I complained to our manager that they were all smoking out in the trucks and on the job (officially against the rules, everyone else did it, except for me - non-smoker). Apparently did this to somehow get everyone upset at me. Manager comes back a few minutes later. Someone openly asks about it. Manager informs them that he already knew they all smoked at installs, he doesn't care, and I've never mentioned it to him. Assistant just leaves the bay in a huff, largely to avoid the glares from everyone else. Let's just say that the assistant wasn't much liked after that day...
A patient inside a room, overheard me tell a colleague a joke. Mind you, we were standing in the hallway. It was a clean joke, no swearing etc., but she felt insulted so she complained about me. Cost me 3 days suspension without pay. "An elderly couple is standing in their bathroom. The wife is looking in the mirror, moaning and whining. She says: 'honey, look, I'm all grey and stuff that isn't supposed to sag, is sagging. I really need you to pay me a compliment!' He swiftly replies 'Well, your eyesight is darn near perfect.'"
Thank you for including the joke. It gave me a good old-fashioned chuckle. The lady was obviously recovering from surgery to remove her sense of humour.
Well. I think it was not a great joke to tell where the public could hear it. It's a little rude.
Great joke. I actually feel a little bit bad for the patient as she was obviously struggling with some self esteem issues. Mental illness can present in many ways. But definitely not something the employee should have been punished for.
I was at a 2 day job interview for a job at a children’s home. During one of the segments, the male interviewer commented on my clothes, saying he would have expected me to dress up more. (I’m a woman.) Idk why but this particular org was obsessed with wearing suits. Like, you literally couldn’t pass your yearly performance review if you didn’t wear a suit jacket. Nice dress? Nope. Please go spend $ on a skirt and jacket that you will literally never wear outside of those reviews. What’s even weirder is I knew they were going to “neg” me on something. I had a friend who worked there and they told me that they specifically “give you feedback” during the interview to see how you take it. If you stand up for yourself you are much less likely to get the job. If you just say something like “thank you for pointing that out, I will do better” it is considered to be in your favor. So since I was expecting something I managed to keep my cool, but if my friend hadn’t warned me idk how I would have reacted. I needed a job so I ignored a ton of red flags about that job. I truly wish I hadn’t taken it. It was miserable, and i seriously want to name drop the org bc they are so s****y. Even if they thought the “giving feedback to see how you respond” was appropriate, how was having a male interviewer comment on my clothing appropriate?!?! I was wearing nice slacks, a very nice shirt, appropriate jewelry, I was modest and well put together- it was so weird. Then again, in this Christian org we had to sit through sexual harassment training that was literally an hour of them telling us everything that *isn’t* harassment. Coworker comments on your body/clothes/etc? Not harassment. Being asked out regularly even though you say no? Not harassment. Being touched by a coworker? Better hope you had never said a kind word to them ever bc that implies consent. It pretty much came down to not having ANY rights or recourse for sexual harassment unless you already have a restraining order or court order against the person. God it was such a s****y place to work.
Sexual harassment, and bullying, are in the eye of the beholder. Had a manager one try to start an argument with me about bullying he got as far as saying ' bullying is' I finished it by saying' in the eye of the beholder'. It is totally for the one being harassed to decide what is....we all have different experiences, expectations and limits.
Nope. Me: a J.D. (law degree) from the University of Texas School of Law.

I worked at a place which had ridiculous H&S signs everywhere. One in particular on the coffee machine made us laugh - “Hot drinks are hot!” - so we made one to put next to it saying “Cold drinks are cold and wet!”. An internal memo went round saying that this was not in the least bit funny and whoever was responsible should be ashamed of themselves.
You’re a rogue, Karl, and you SHOULD be ashamed of yourself!

He got called into HR because he went to the bathroom during a non-break time. He quit and was harangued on the way out the door for not showing any company loyalty. Who is loyal to a company that doesn't allow bathroom privileges?
There is another comment here that explains it well, in short it is done by fans at a sports game where fans stand up then sit down in sequence creating what looks like a wave

She went to my manager to complain that clearly I had assumed that because she was hispanic, she must not have a home computer! ...I'm hispanic. Icing on the cake: the manager she complained to (who was NOT hispanic) did not own a home computer. A lot of people in the area didn't. When she told the patron as much, the patron left in a huff and never returned again.
I've been on the other side of that scenario. I asked the librarian a question and she rolled her eyes and said "Google that yourself. Do you know how to use the internet?" This was for a secret-shopper assignment in library school. We had to visit a library, ask a question, and bring back a critique of how the librarian handled it. I had fun with my report.
I had a former employer ask me to not drive a certain car to work because people were coming to him angry thinking I was being paid substantially more than them. It's a 99 Porsche 911 with a salvage title, mileage discrepancies, and high miles. I got it STUPID cheap and drove it for a while as I was repairing and modifying it to race it. I could not convince them that I had less money in that car than their shipping guy had in his 05 silverado. I still drove it for another month.
I've worked with people in junior positions, so on lower salaries, that clearly had more money than me - driving flash car and dressing better than I could afford at the time! No ones business what they drive or how much money they have.
Just when I think people can’t be more awful and entitled AHs, the next post shows they can.
I worked for one of the Big Three (GM,Ford, Chrysler (Diamler), I got in trouble for driving a competitors car, for an entry level position.
A colleague complained to my boss that I was mocking her because I had drawn a smiley face on a note to her. My reasoning behind this was to avoid her taking my note as a critique, but I guess she was just searching for a reason to complain. Edit: corrected the spelling
I was one reported for telling a driver to have a good day instead of telling him to have a great day.
this excessive effusiveness in usa needs to stop. I regularly reprimand my kids to use appropriate level adjectives. I blame the lego movie. I told them that the only time you can use "awesome" is if you see a nuclear explosion or a volcanic eruption. Anything else is "impressive" or "good" or "interesting".
When I was in high school in my programming class, there was a special ed kid who sat behind me one day, and who had an assistant. The assistant complained to the teacher that I was distracting her student. I was farther ahead in the project that he was, and the tutorial said to draw some sprites, so that's what I was doing. Anyway, the teacher told her to stop giving me a hard time.
I taught a technical course. We had a practical exam that consisted of a series of samples of signals that I provided to the class and they had to measure. Each signal was provided for a few minutes then I randomly selected the next signal. I reminded students verbally and by email to not be late for the test because we need to perform a calibration sequence, plus I cannot go back to previous randomly-generated samples. Well one guy showed up 45 minutes late, about 15 minutes before the end of the test. I told him he couldn't write. He immediately went to the dean to complain about me. To this day I'm not sure why but the dean sided with him and I was told to allow him to write the exam. I later meet with the dean to explain my side of the story and explain that I am willing to rerun the test just for him if I am ordered to but it's not right or fair. We then met with the student where he explained that he was late for the 8 AM test because of several reasons: He was doing laundry, and was on a long distance phone call, and missed 2 trains, and forgot about the test, and slept-in. The dean finally understood. The student did not write that test.
I was accused of racial and sexist discrimination for telling someone how to do her job. Yep, I was her manager. This was a person that I had been forced to hire (literally rejected her 5 times over the course of 2 months, but she kept pursuing it with internal recruiting and HR). My leadership team then forced me to hire even though A) she did not have the actual experience needed (hence why I didn't hire her the first time we spoke) B) she thought that a 2 hour lunch her first day was acceptable with no call, e-mail or text letting me know she was going to be gone an extended period of time. She stated she was with a manager from another department so she thought this was ok. Then proceeded to cry and tell me she was on her period. C) She flat out sucked at her job - never did what she was supposed to do and was put onto initial phases of performance improvement plan. So then she accuses me of discrimination on the basis of racism and sexism. I (white man) laughed hysterically at this. My team was comprised of 3 black women, 1 Indian woman, a Pakistani woman, 5 white women, and 3 Latinas. I had 1 white guy on my team. None had an issue (I was their manager for 3+ years). She then was transferred to a black male manager in the same department - same issues. Within 3 months she just decided to quit and left the workforce all together to be a stay at home mom.
This happened fairly recently. My new co-worker has been treating me like I'm incompetent since he started. One of his favorite subtle insults is to tell me, "If you didn't understand, you should have asked me" when he assumes I've made some sort of mistake. One day he messed up and failed to accomplish a task the way it had been defined. In a moment of thoughtlessness, and because the phrase on its own is insulting but in a pretty minor way, I told him that if he hadn't understood, he should have asked me. He immediately went to the general manager to file a formal complaint against me on that basis of that one sentence. They took it surprisingly seriously, though I was pretty easily able to convince them it was a minor misunderstanding.
When I worked in a call center, one of my coworkers filed a complaint that I said something rude about them to another co-worker. When my boss was discussing it with me, I asked what was said. They said they couldn't tell me. Well, who did I say it about? They can't tell me. So I was reprimanded for saying something about someone and I'm supposed to know WTF that was all about. (I wasn't in the habit of saying slurs or really anything mean so I was truly baffled.) I said "well, if I don't know what I said that offended them, how can I know what not to say in the future?" They said "Sorry, we can't help you with that." Whut? (I later figured out who it was (because he was a little whiny a*s baby) but never did figure out what was said.)
I was accused of saying the s-word in kindergarten or first grade and got yelled at by the counselor until I cried. I didn't learn what the s-word was for 6 more years. Idk if the kid was being deliberately obtuse to get me in trouble or legit misheard me because my crooked teeth gave me a lisp, but what I actually said was "sit down".
Wow. The counselor yelled at you? Sounds like they need a new counselor.

I asked principal what I supposedly said. Parent didn't say only that I was talking "rough." OK.. . . What does rough mean? Principal didn't know. Asked if I could know which student's parent. Principal wouldn't tell me. Asked which class. Still wouldn't tell me. Still not sure what the point was.
I used to work as a receptionist. A coworker once reported me for not bringing her her mail fast enough. I grabbed it from the mailbox and delivered it to her maybe 15 minutes later than usual. Even my manager couldn’t take the complaint seriously.
Not a formal complaint, but I was working one summer McJob as a teenager as one of two workers in a particular role. Place only ever needed one and the other guy had seniority so he got full time and I was getting maybe twenty hours per week. I wanted more but boss wouldn't give em to me. Coworker and I were chatting and he said something like, "I heard other guy is looking for a different job, that'd be nice for you getting more hours, huh?" And I responded that I wouldn't mind that too much. Little s**t went to the other co-worker and told him I'd said I thought he was a f*****g a*****e and hoped he got fired because I felt I deserved the hours more than him... guy aggressively cornered me in the change room next shift change; I thought he was gonna throw a punch but I managed to convince him I hadn't said anything like that.
I got suspended from elementary school by the librarian for telling a much younger student that his shoe was untied when he was wearing Velcro
I don't know of any school where a librarian has the power to suspend anyone from school. Really?
In elementary school, we were allowed to chew gum outside only during recess. I was chewing gum outside during recess, when I accidentally snarfed it. I ran a few steps inside the school to a water fountain so I could dislodge and swallow it. Instead, I choked it up, and into the fountain. The meanest teacher in school happened to be standing nearby, and gave me detention for “chewing gum in school”. I was 5 yo, btw.
Librarians, man. We're out to get you. lol (I myself was kicked out of the public library as a teen...but I totally deserved it. Note to self: do not practice karate kicks in the stacks)
I worked for one of the big coffee shop chains, that had a policy in place that if you saw someone was near the end of their drink, to ask them if they would like another one brought to them, especially if they were busy with kids or working on a laptop etc and couldn’t easily come up to the counter. I asked one lady who was sat with two small kids if she would like another drink as I noticed she’d finished hers while her kids weren’t even halfway through theirs. She politely declined and I forgot about it. The next day we have a 1-star review online and three paragraphs about how we made her feel uncomfortable and like we were rushing her out of her seat and she’ll never come back again now because of the way she was treated.
Definitely overreacting, but I wonder if European culture contributed. Over here we take our time and waiters don't check in unless it's time to order something or you flag them down. The American mid-meal checkup is seen as weird and harrying.
Interesting point. Here in USA it would be considered poor service not to check in periodically.

My manager once wrote me up for tapping my toes to the music. What a f*****g c**t, glad I quit and found a much better job
This really depends on the specific scenario. If you work in a quite office, it is very annoying to have a co-worker listening to music through headphones and tapping their foot. If the music is not through headphones, then tapping is no big deal.
Ok, but even then, why an official write-up? A simple conversation can settle that as well, right?

I had a coworker from a different department call me this morning and threatened me for something his boss had done regarding something I have no control over. I eventually got him to sheepishly admit that there was nothing I had control over in the situation and he was mad his boss had made the decision without consulting him first. Government work attracts some odd balls.
Perfectly good description of a strange or eccentric person, although it should be one word 'oddball'.

I don't smoke but she'd tell me I needed to take a smoke break if she felt like it was possible to have a bit of down time We came back inside and I ran two pies out to the buffet and came back in to the other cook straight up screaming in my face. Taken aback since she'd never done this before, I looked over at my boss who seemed just as surprised and started laughing. Laughing made the other cook madder, she quit on the spot and yelled in the dining room she hoped I killed someone and got put in prison. The next day she called hr and accused me of sexual harassment which was quickly disproved by all the witnesses.
I don't think anyone does. It's very poorly written.

I dated a lady who was an OT8 (highest level) scientologist. She was cool at first but within weeks she became drunk and disorderly. When I broke up with her she tried filing some bizarre restraining order against me and had some weirdo private detective (I ended up later on dating his ex wife) who kept like hanging around places I went. The judge threw out the restraining order and ordered she pay my legal expenses. Like a year later I was in jail and I get notified of a visit. I go and it's some dude I've never seen before. Her ex husband wanting me to testify at their divorce proceedings. How did he even find me? Weirdest people ever.
My first thought....we BPers are a sick bunch.....

He retaliated by calling HR and making a serious complaint about me. Fortunately I was able to prove he was lying, but I think any employee caught lying to HR should be fired. You could seriously affect my life with your lies and you're just allowed to keep doing it?? I really hate the 'you have to write them up first' BS we're required to do. But let me tell you- if it was something that affected the money, like stealing, they'd fire him right away.

I've worked in hospitals for 10+ years and had the odd patient complaint, but that one really takes the cake and I wasn't even on the clock!

I couldn't believe at how offended he was because I used to believe this was common sense. After this, I just decided to let whoever wanted to risk stepping on a nail or stub their toe on a shelf should just go ahead.
For some reason, I get people who just don't like me. I get yelled at, notes are left on my desk, et c.
