Being alive comes with a long bill.

From healthcare and housing to food, clothes, and education, even the basics are enough to empty your wallet. And that’s before you factor in life’s little pleasures.

But when a hidden, ridiculous fee gets thrown on top? That’s just adding insult to injury. These are some of the most outrageous charges people had to pay—and honestly, you’ll probably want to scream on their behalf.

This is the smart thing to do. I'd hand deliver for $48. Talk to your landlord and find out how much of a d**k he is. Maybe he'll suggest a method that saves you money. I'm a landlord in the U.S. and I have my tenant pay rent via Venmo. Because it doesn't cost me anything, I don't charge the tenant anything. I'm not a d**k like many landlords though.

One of my usual takeaways here in NZ charges a "convenient fee". Yes, I am sure it's convenient for you (to be fair to them, it's really a fee to balance what they have to pay the credit card company, and it's not that high - it's just that everytime I read the misspelling, I scoff at it again...)

Ours charges to pay in person. They went to a "payment portal" a few years ago and after a few hiccups it has been good. I think that the amount of time it took to pro the deposits is what turned the trick. If I was the OP I'd be calling every agency with a phone until that was done away with.

The management company that owns the residential building I live in (and several more along the coast), keeps emailing me info on setting up an EFT (electronic funds transfer). I pay everything via EFT, but I still write a check for my flat. I don't know why, but I just don't trust them.

    chris Cannon

You're right not to trust them with your account information. Check and see if there's a discount for using EFT. As a landlord myself, I have my tenant use Venmo because it's free, but I'd give my tenant a discount if I knew rent would come automatically. It can't hurt to ask.

My rental company uses software that didn't use to charge for E-check payments. The software company pushed us to have all of our tenants sign on to pay that way "Because it's free and convenient!" only to turn around and start charging a convenience fee. Granted it's only $3.49 but most of our tenants are struggling college students to every penny counts so we encourage them to pay with a personal check at no charge

Financial intuitions learned the hard way not to let people sit on financial resources without a known end to the window. IIRC, there was a case where someone cashed in a small original savings account principal from the 1800s that crashed the financial system because of the accrued interest.

Depending upon the business model, this may be the part of the price that pays for the upkeep of the website. These things are not free to run. There are hosting costs, development costs, licence fees, domain registrations, backups etc. etc. Normally you'd include this in the price of your own items, but if you are reselling items with a set RRP, then this may be how they've chosen to charge.

You’ll get sent to retention and they’ll lower your price. Don’t ask for retention because that will get you nowhere. Actually say I’m going to cancel today to get to the team. The normal way would be for all costs to go into food price. Customer sees one number which includes everything from building maintenance to staff salaries to profit. The US way of resorting to (basically) begging the clients to pay the salaries through tips is strange, to say the least.

in my opinion it's not my place to pay their staff a living wage, the business owner should forgo buying a new flash car this year and reward their staff for all their hard work, failing that the business owner should have a low pay tax levy placed on them and the collected tax redistributed to their underpaid employees

I don't get this. I'm fully supportive of employees receiving a living wage, but this is sneaky. Just charge more for the food and pay your employees a decent wage. Trust me, customers will appreciate knowing the full cost of their meal a heck of a lot more than this sneaky fee.

This one would be US - the spelling of "check" gives it away (other English speaking countries spell it "cheque", and what you get at the end of the meal is the bill). In other countries, the "living wage fee" is built into the cost of the meal. I really don't think that this is outrageous - they are just separating the charge rather than building it in - it's there everywhere, just not singled out. It's very similar to how taxes are never included in the cost of an item in the US - pretty much everywhere else has the tax built into the price, so what you see is what you pay.

There's a discussion below about whether the places that do this kind of virtue signaling about paying a living wage actually do so. AFAICT, they mostly don't. My young peeps working the food industry say that this is the type of place that will pay more slightly more than average, and they still don't make enough to make rent, AND they get screwed out of their tips. My lil nibbling told me the 'pool' at the place where he worked also consisted of the managers and the owner. With the owner putting in more, so he deserved the biggest chunk of the pool.

Dentists do this when someone else is having a dental crisis. It was me once. A molar split down the middle and I couldn't even see straight. At a later date, I was bumped while 'in the chair for cleaning' because he was up to his elbows in someone else's life. I told them I understood.

    Robert T

And the reason that they do this is because so many people simply fail to turn up for their appointments, or wait to the morning of the appointment to cancel, and they then have no chance of filling the slot. Given that my dentist is normally fully-booked for at least the next 3-6 months, this is hardly surprising. Yes, it sounds two-faced when want to reschedule your appointment, but next time you have a dental emergency and they need to fit you in, think about how that affects other patients.

I recall confirming a doctor's appointment. Showed up on time only to have the receptionist tell me I wasn't booked. I explained that I had confirmed the appointment, and she got nasty. Okey Dokey, we'll see. I sent the office a professional looking invoice for my time, my missed salary, and mileage. The accounts payable department didn't question just another invoice and sent me a check. And I found a dependable doctor elsewhere.

I mean as long as they didn't charge you the cancelation fee when they rescheduled this makes sense. When I was in medical we had a huge issue with people canceling last minute or just not showing up which essentially blocked other people from getting seen sooner. We still have to pay our docs and staff for being there for that slot too.

My dentists texts me reminding me if I cancel within 48hrs of the appointment I can be charged. The reminder texts have *never* come through more than 47hr 58 min before the appointment time.

thats quite normal in germany especially with dentists or specialized doctors. if you no show or cancel within 24 hours of the appointment they charge you. i think while 80 Euros are high, its to teach the patient some manners and that a scheduled appointment is nothing you can just skip because of inconvienience on your side.

It is illegal in the EU and UK to charge a different price based on how someone pays. The implication here though is that this is a city charge, and as they don't take cash, one that can't be avoided.

It's NYC law since 2024 to disclose the fees charged by credit cards (and to not charge more than the business is paying). The seller is required to include the fee AND disclose it on pricing (e.g., Pasta $23 + x% processing fee).

While it's true about this stupid law in NY regarding credit card fees on restaurant receipts, if I was a restaurant in NY, I'd think twice about a credit card processing company that charged that much per transaction.

there is no tax in NY or NYC for non-cash processing, there is a law that if you charge a processing or technology fee you must disclose it before check out and put it on the receipt.

Every single cruise line does this. Any time they send me an advertisement for those fake "two for one discounts", I just ignore it. The only way to know what a cruise actually costs is to spend the time to click into the purchase process. My issue is not so much that cruises charge fees (I get that port fees, taxes, etc. add up), it's the fact that price shopping is difficult because all prices listed are fake.

A family member had an ambulance with two staff come out to check on her two weeks ago when she suddenly felt sick. Rural location, the ambulance probably went some 60miles round trip. Charge? about 80 dollars US (including the check-up). I am so grateful we don't live in a place like the US. Not everything is perfect (getting the ambulance quickly wasn't exactly a certainty). But at least calling one isn't dicing with financial ruin.

They aren't all like that! There are very many reasonable airbnb's. I've stayed in them where the owners have picked me up from the airport, given me their parking token for a garage, and rented to me a second and third time privately! Hotels are great, but they are much more expensive for say 3 people who all want their own room, an airbnb is more economical the more of you there are.

I’m in Australia, and while I don’t think it’s illegal as such I’m with two banks; one will let me overdraw about $50 before it’ll start declining my card (no fees) and the other will just decline my card if there isn’t enough on it (no fees either). I’d be so pissed if I copped card fees because my deposit wasn’t processed quickly enough.

I understand that some people have mobility restrictions or don't drive and benefit greatly from these services, but they are just that- a service. An expensive one. It's not going to be cheap to have someone use an hour of their time to drive your food around for you. It's expensive to have easy to use technology to make ordering easy, plus customer service on hand in case of error. I think the delivery fees are perfectly reasonable, the service fee seems a bit higher than it needs to be but also fair that it exists.

This was January 2023. And, to repeat myself from elsewhere, I don't understand how it matters that they used a line item for the 4%. They could just have hidden & raised prices by 4% [a tiny amount given the state of the world in January 2023] and I would have said the customer was whining about nothing that a restaurant had to raise prices 4% -- COLA in the USA was 8.7% in 2023.

And to repeat myself: was this fee announced on the menu? Because if it had been included in the price of the food, it would have been visible, albeit not itemised. This way it's sprung on the customer after they had the meal. But hey, it's cool, come over, I sell you a brand new TV for $ 0.01 - I know you won't mind the $ 2,000 Economic Recovery Fee.

I recently rented a car and used an app (specific to the state I was traveling through) to imput the license plate number and my credit card. The deductions were made automatically. However, when we entered Canada, the toll road we were on did not have any payment options other than to charge the rental company. Luckily, there was only one fee, but the cost of the toll was doubled since the rental company charged a processing fee. Most toll roads don't have booths anymore, so I couldn't believe there wasn't an online option to make the payment yourself.

Got An Eviction Letter For Being 15 Minutes Late Paying My Rent. Look At These Fees

List of ridiculous fees on a rental statement including pest control, trash admin, and eviction costs totaling nearly $2,000.

$180 just for writing an eviction letter??? Like seriously?? You had to write it once and I bet it was years ago. You have copies just laying around!
So my $1,479 of rent after all these charges and the late fee really means my rent is $1,988. Why is it a bank can tell me I can't afford a $900 mortgage but $2000 for rent? Nah, you got this bro. 2 bed room dumpster fire with dry wall missing. This isn't not the luxury apartment that's advertised, so why charge luxury prices?
15 minutes late... kiss my a*s. You force us to pay using money order. Sorry you close your office 15 minutes before I get home. I live in Dallas, I tried to race here but whatever. My schedule doesn't revolve around you. Maybe get your s**t together and setup online payments.

Blame Congress. The Visa/Mastercard cartel in the US charges 3%-4%, which is passed onto you, the consumer, one way or the other. The ACTUAL cost of these services is about 1/10 of that - so 0.3% - 0.4% - which is what some countries in Europe FORCE the cartel to charge.

Excessive Fees And Charges For A Rental Car

Woman standing next to a black car with a list of ridiculous fees on a car rental receipt including taxes and add-ons.

The original price was $390 so I was shocked when it jumped to $550 upon payment. Come to find out there’s just a buttload of excessive fees and surcharges. I mean what on earth is the police training fee for…

Maybe (and this is a total guess) Avis has decided to do a 'charitable donation'/sponsorship of the local PD, and is now passing the costs onto the customers...otherwise I can't think of any possible reason the Police budget has ANY connection with car rentals.

Well, you use public roads, do you? They ain't free to build or repair. If everyone has an electric car, who is paying for it them? This is the rare fee that has some sense and ethics behind it (which doesn't mean the specific amount is or isn't fair, but in principle, it's understandable).

I would be MEGA-grateful for that! Once you donate somewhere, you’re hounded unto death by them and everyone they sell your name to. For thirty or so years now, I’ve used money orders to donate so no one knows who to pester. An old man I look after gets sent literal boxes full of c**p every year from the places he donates to, and I don’t. Want my donations spent that way and I don’t want 💩 sent to me. I want men to get education, homes, and jobs so they can take care of their kids. I don’t need calendars, socks, seeds, note cards, pens, etc. That stuff costs MINEY that should be used to help [whatever the charity is for]. If there were ways to donate that would cause someone else to get credit, I’d happily use ‘em! (To clarify: I give to the Doe Fund.)
