But when a hidden, ridiculous fee gets thrown on top? That’s just adding insult to injury. These are some of the most outrageous charges people had to pay—and honestly, you’ll probably want to scream on their behalf.

It won’t let me just directly connect my checking account. My rent is already high enough and they want another 50 dollars out of me just to pay for it?
My landlord does this too. Each and every month, we get a money order and walk it to the office. I refuse to pay a fee to pay online.
This is the smart thing to do. I'd hand deliver for $48. Talk to your landlord and find out how much of a d**k he is. Maybe he'll suggest a method that saves you money. I'm a landlord in the U.S. and I have my tenant pay rent via Venmo. Because it doesn't cost me anything, I don't charge the tenant anything. I'm not a d**k like many landlords though.
Load More Replies...One of my usual takeaways here in NZ charges a "convenient fee". Yes, I am sure it's convenient for you (to be fair to them, it's really a fee to balance what they have to pay the credit card company, and it's not that high - it's just that everytime I read the misspelling, I scoff at it again...)
Illegal in Australia. And even if it was a card surcharge ....how much is the rent?
Ours charges to pay in person. They went to a "payment portal" a few years ago and after a few hiccups it has been good. I think that the amount of time it took to pro the deposits is what turned the trick. If I was the OP I'd be calling every agency with a phone until that was done away with.
The management company that owns the residential building I live in (and several more along the coast), keeps emailing me info on setting up an EFT (electronic funds transfer). I pay everything via EFT, but I still write a check for my flat. I don't know why, but I just don't trust them.
You're right not to trust them with your account information. Check and see if there's a discount for using EFT. As a landlord myself, I have my tenant use Venmo because it's free, but I'd give my tenant a discount if I knew rent would come automatically. It can't hurt to ask.

The software company pushed us to have all of our tenants sign on to pay that way "Because it's free and convenient!" only to turn around and start charging a convenience fee. Airbnb Cleaning Fee Is Almost Double The Rate For The Night
That's a cheap fee. I own an AirBNB and use a cleaning service. I only charge what the service charges me for a 2bd 2bath. That's $150 per time. Hotels have staff so they can spread the costs out. We don't.

Don't trust Airbnb. Maybe it's the ludicrous name since it's not a Bread and Breakfast deal at all. I'll stick with hotels and motels.
Well if u will put hotels outta business, by using Airbnb you only got yourself to blame !!
For $160, you could get a nice hotel room and not have to worry about cleaning it yourself. AirBnB charges a "cleaning fee" but then expects YOU to clean it before leaving! No thanks!
Kid Gets A Netspend Pre-Paid For His Bday Last Year With $50 On It. Finally Decided To Use It And The Fees Bled The Card Dry
In 2016, the FTC claimed Netspend used deceptive methods... It's 2025, and it's still going strong. I blame our legislators and the US AG for allowing this company that level of overreach, but I'd never expect them to do anything about it since it's a poor person's problem.
Agreed. That's bs that nothing will be done to stop this.
Load More Replies...Lol. Why not charge him to pay for a negative balance too, while you're at it. "Look at all the hassle you caused us by not using your card. You have to understand thatcomes with a cost..."
Is that a gift card or an account with debit card that someone put 50$ on? Because it looks like the latter... In this case, maintenance/fees for card are unfortunately still common and could've been predicted.
Maintenance fees are just bullshite. The card just sits there till activated. Meanwhile the business has the money to play with and they make interest out of it just sitting in their bank.

This is one of many reasons why I don't use food delivery services. I'll only order delivery via the restaurant using their own drivers. They still exist, and tipping them in cash means no record for prying eyes.
If you're ordering food from a third party delivery service, you have to expect > $30 in fees. Imo it's stupid to order anything delivered from UberEATS or similar sh itass service.

I’m Being Charged To Install It Myself
Why don't they just call it what it is a "we're taking the p i s s fee, but what are you going to do about it!"
so wait. There's a "WiFi Activation Fee" , but they waived that because you activated it yourself. Then they charged you a "self Installation Activation Fee" that just happens to be the same amount as the "WiFi Activation Fee".
And this is why I use streaming sites al a carte. I got sick and tired of trying to read/understand my cable bills with all the fluky fees that just didn't make sense. If a streaming site goes off the rails, I can cancel without losing it all.
Not for installing it for activating it. Not saying it should be there but it clearly says activation. Also I used to work for them. Pro tip, call and say you’ll cancel. You’ll get sent to retention and they’ll lower your price. Don’t ask for retention because that will get you nowhere. Actually say I’m going to cancel today to get to the team. They’re the only ones who can put deals on your account.
This Restaurant Charges An 18% Living Wage Fee
This blows my mind.. Why should customers be charged if a restaurant has a stupid business model.. Try putting the prices up on all items instead of this pity party of a fee. Yes - all people should be paid a living wage including servers so fix your government policies and minimum wage laws.. sheesh..
Paying a living wage is a stupid business model? That's the most American thing I've ever heard. It works out to the same amount. Why are you so angry that it's a separate item?
Load More Replies...The normal way would be for all costs to go into food price. Customer sees one number which includes everything from building maintenance to staff salaries to profit. The US way of resorting to (basically) begging the clients to pay the salaries through tips is strange, to say the least.
in my opinion it's not my place to pay their staff a living wage, the business owner should forgo buying a new flash car this year and reward their staff for all their hard work, failing that the business owner should have a low pay tax levy placed on them and the collected tax redistributed to their underpaid employees
I don't get this. I'm fully supportive of employees receiving a living wage, but this is sneaky. Just charge more for the food and pay your employees a decent wage. Trust me, customers will appreciate knowing the full cost of their meal a heck of a lot more than this sneaky fee.
USA.USA. illegal in the real world. Its a tip scam with a guilt induced name
Out of curiosity, what country is this happening in, or is it happening all over the world?
This one would be US - the spelling of "check" gives it away (other English speaking countries spell it "cheque", and what you get at the end of the meal is the bill). In other countries, the "living wage fee" is built into the cost of the meal. I really don't think that this is outrageous - they are just separating the charge rather than building it in - it's there everywhere, just not singled out. It's very similar to how taxes are never included in the cost of an item in the US - pretty much everywhere else has the tax built into the price, so what you see is what you pay.
Load More Replies...There's a discussion below about whether the places that do this kind of virtue signaling about paying a living wage actually do so. AFAICT, they mostly don't. My young peeps working the food industry say that this is the type of place that will pay more slightly more than average, and they still don't make enough to make rent, AND they get screwed out of their tips. My lil nibbling told me the 'pool' at the place where he worked also consisted of the managers and the owner. With the owner putting in more, so he deserved the biggest chunk of the pool.
Dentist Cancelled An Hour Before I Was Supposed To Be There. I Have Gotten 3-4 Auto Messages The Last Week Reminding Me Of The Appointment And To Confirm It, Threatening $59 Fee For Short Notice Cancellation
I'm sure it's reminding you that you are owed 59 dollars for them cancelling on you.
You wish... probably they now charge the $59 anyway, since the patient will not take the moved appointment.
Load More Replies...Dentists do this when someone else is having a dental crisis. It was me once. A molar split down the middle and I couldn't even see straight. At a later date, I was bumped while 'in the chair for cleaning' because he was up to his elbows in someone else's life. I told them I understood.
And the reason that they do this is because so many people simply fail to turn up for their appointments, or wait to the morning of the appointment to cancel, and they then have no chance of filling the slot. Given that my dentist is normally fully-booked for at least the next 3-6 months, this is hardly surprising. Yes, it sounds two-faced when want to reschedule your appointment, but next time you have a dental emergency and they need to fit you in, think about how that affects other patients.
I recall confirming a doctor's appointment. Showed up on time only to have the receptionist tell me I wasn't booked. I explained that I had confirmed the appointment, and she got nasty. Okey Dokey, we'll see. I sent the office a professional looking invoice for my time, my missed salary, and mileage. The accounts payable department didn't question just another invoice and sent me a check. And I found a dependable doctor elsewhere.
I mean as long as they didn't charge you the cancelation fee when they rescheduled this makes sense. When I was in medical we had a huge issue with people canceling last minute or just not showing up which essentially blocked other people from getting seen sooner. We still have to pay our docs and staff for being there for that slot too.
My dentists texts me reminding me if I cancel within 48hrs of the appointment I can be charged. The reminder texts have *never* come through more than 47hr 58 min before the appointment time.
thats quite normal in germany especially with dentists or specialized doctors. if you no show or cancel within 24 hours of the appointment they charge you. i think while 80 Euros are high, its to teach the patient some manners and that a scheduled appointment is nothing you can just skip because of inconvienience on your side.
Non Cash Processing Fees At A Restaurant That Doesn’t Take Cash
That’s illegal where I am. You need at least one non-surcharged method of payment.
It is illegal in the EU and UK to charge a different price based on how someone pays. The implication here though is that this is a city charge, and as they don't take cash, one that can't be avoided.
Load More Replies...When this low-down method exists, it's up to the consumers to notify their State Attorney and to plaster social media with the names of the business operating in this under-handed manner.
If I went to a restaurant that told me that I couldn't use cash and then tried to charge me a fee for not using cash, they'd get an earful and I sure as hell wouldn't be paying that no-cash fee.
It's NYC law since 2024 to disclose the fees charged by credit cards (and to not charge more than the business is paying). The seller is required to include the fee AND disclose it on pricing (e.g., Pasta $23 + x% processing fee).
While it's true about this stupid law in NY regarding credit card fees on restaurant receipts, if I was a restaurant in NY, I'd think twice about a credit card processing company that charged that much per transaction.
Load More Replies...there is no tax in NY or NYC for non-cash processing, there is a law that if you charge a processing or technology fee you must disclose it before check out and put it on the receipt.

Also not the tourist tax? Where I live I think this is the only one that will be added later as it depends on how many people (you can book a 6 person spot for just 2, then you only pay for 2)
Load More Replies...Any time you see a cruise fare advertised, just double it for a reasonable estimate of how much it will actually cost you.
Every single cruise line does this. Any time they send me an advertisement for those fake "two for one discounts", I just ignore it. The only way to know what a cruise actually costs is to spend the time to click into the purchase process. My issue is not so much that cruises charge fees (I get that port fees, taxes, etc. add up), it's the fact that price shopping is difficult because all prices listed are fake.

That's illegal in Europe. Bank can't fee you into negative balance on your bank account. I'm not sure about all the countries, but in at least in some of them you can't even get negative balance at all, period. Whatever the reason.
I’m in Australia, and while I don’t think it’s illegal as such I’m with two banks; one will let me overdraw about $50 before it’ll start declining my card (no fees) and the other will just decline my card if there isn’t enough on it (no fees either). I’d be so pissed if I copped card fees because my deposit wasn’t processed quickly enough.

I understand that some people have mobility restrictions or don't drive and benefit greatly from these services, but they are just that- a service. An expensive one. It's not going to be cheap to have someone use an hour of their time to drive your food around for you. It's expensive to have easy to use technology to make ordering easy, plus customer service on hand in case of error. I think the delivery fees are perfectly reasonable, the service fee seems a bit higher than it needs to be but also fair that it exists.

This was January 2023. And, to repeat myself from elsewhere, I don't understand how it matters that they used a line item for the 4%. They could just have hidden & raised prices by 4% [a tiny amount given the state of the world in January 2023] and I would have said the customer was whining about nothing that a restaurant had to raise prices 4% -- COLA in the USA was 8.7% in 2023.
And to repeat myself: was this fee announced on the menu? Because if it had been included in the price of the food, it would have been visible, albeit not itemised. This way it's sprung on the customer after they had the meal. But hey, it's cool, come over, I sell you a brand new TV for $ 0.01 - I know you won't mind the $ 2,000 Economic Recovery Fee.

However, when we entered Canada, the toll road we were on did not have any payment options other than to charge the rental company. Turns out one of the items (€115) was made in china. Surprise. Charge is non-negotiable and irreversible. If I refuse the package I will still owe the money.
Your issue is not Greece (the trader) or china ( the manufacturer) . Send your post as as email to the cretin you have as your president
He can't read, wouldn't even know what it says.

The original price was $390 so I was shocked when it jumped to $550 upon payment. Come to find out there’s just a buttload of excessive fees and surcharges. I mean what on earth is the police training fee for…
Picking up and dropping off at an airport.
Why the f**k would I be forced to pay for the pigs training because I rented a car? Train them to what? Needlessly and unjustly pull people over to meet their quota?
wtf is a police training fee 🤷♀️I’m sure uk don’t have that on hire cars 😂😂
Maybe (and this is a total guess) Avis has decided to do a 'charitable donation'/sponsorship of the local PD, and is now passing the costs onto the customers...otherwise I can't think of any possible reason the Police budget has ANY connection with car rentals.
Trying To Book A Hotel Through The Hotel’s Website To Save Money And... Wtf Is A Bed Tax?
"Wtf Is A Bed Tax?" Usually the local municipality tax on hotels / BnBs etc.
Apparently, according to Google. It is a tax paid to the local council/government when a room is rented in a hotel/b&b.

Bed taxes are a common tourist / city tax. But thats is taking the p**s. USA of course
My Renewal Used To Be About $60 USD. My State Passed A Law That States Hybrid Cars Get A 100-200 Dollar Fee Because The State Isn't Making Money Off Of Me Buying Gas
It's an optional donation for the awareness campaign
Load More Replies...Well, you use public roads, do you? They ain't free to build or repair. If everyone has an electric car, who is paying for it them? This is the rare fee that has some sense and ethics behind it (which doesn't mean the specific amount is or isn't fair, but in principle, it's understandable).
This person will be the same one that complains when the road is filled with potholes and no longer drivable. $70 fee once a year really isn't much.

But when they make the donation to the food bank, it's in their name, not yours.
I would be MEGA-grateful for that! Once you donate somewhere, you’re hounded unto death by them and everyone they sell your name to. For thirty or so years now, I’ve used money orders to donate so no one knows who to pester. An old man I look after gets sent literal boxes full of c**p every year from the places he donates to, and I don’t. Want my donations spent that way and I don’t want 💩 sent to me. I want men to get education, homes, and jobs so they can take care of their kids. I don’t need calendars, socks, seeds, note cards, pens, etc. That stuff costs MINEY that should be used to help [whatever the charity is for]. If there were ways to donate that would cause someone else to get credit, I’d happily use ‘em! (To clarify: I give to the Doe Fund.)

So they aren't actually matching anything but they get the tax write off, not you. Awesome.

Just send him a check every month. See how convenient that is for your landlord...
Wanted To Avoid Delivery Fees, Got Charged Convenience Fee For Ordering Online And Picking It Up Myself
Yup. It oughta be called an “inconvenience fee,” but as long as people put up with all this nonsense, it’ll continue *and* get worse as people have demonstrated they’ll pay all manner of 🐂💩.

Why are people constantly complaining about this? It’s explained very near the top of the T&C that it’ll be eaten by fees in no time. Do people not even bother to GLANCE AT what they’re buying? If you’re gonna be stupid, you’ll pay for it. At least make the minimum effort (like GLANCING at what you’re buying!).
My Friend Forgot His Phone In The Lyft Yesterday. We Paid A $15 Fee To Be Able To Communicate With The Driver. It’s Been Almost 24 Hours And No Response From Lyft Or The Driver
These Fees Are Getting A Bit Out Of Hand
First It Was The $75 Charge To Use The Fridge, Now This?
$15 for 20MB?! I’ll bet they’ré making more money doing this than they are from the nickel slot machines! 😆 You KNOW there are plenty of dopes paying for 20MB! 🤪

$200 Lost Ticket Fee For This Parking Garage
If I remember correctly it used to be around $30, then $50, then they recently changed it to $200. This is a parking garage that many of us college students use and we have very few parking options available so I have to use this parking garage whenever I can since it's also the closest to my classes.
To be fair, I've never lost a ticket. Like. You just leave it in your car. This does seem like someone just leaving it there for longer than permitted then playing "oops lost it!" I hate paying for parking as much as the next guy but understand why it's necessary.
Is This Even Legal?
This one is correct. The bank charges commission? Whoever gets the money pays the transaction cost.
Wtf no? They could just pay their staff a livable wage that doesn't rely on tips then just let customers know you don't accept non cash tips if they do want to tip. As a restaurant your staff is the reason people come back to you and continue giving your business money, this is f****d up.

This sucks and lot but tbf, they did park where they weren't supposed to. Would be really awesome if new neighbors talked to them about it instead of just having it towed of course but who knows if they have been dealing with people parking in their spot that they pay for for a while already.
I Forgot To Hit Pay On Last Step Of 3 Questions And Got A $30 Ticket. Went To Look At The App After I Received The Ticket And Realized I Didn’t Finish The Most Important Step
So, you got a parking ticket for not paying for parking. Do you expect online businesses to ship your order even if you haven't completed the transaction?
So many of these are "junk fees". Biden worked with the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to begin addressing this problem, and succeeded in making legislation to make these fees illegal. Trump has ended those consumer protections, so get used to seeing them again, I guess.
So...all these examples are from the last few months? /s

Are you f*****g braindead or just like to pretend to be online?
