“I mean it's one banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?”

Although Lucille Bluth was dead serious when she uttered those words on Arrested Development, we as the viewers found the line hilarious because we could never imagine a person saying such a thing. However, that might just be because most of us are not hanging around extremely wealthy people very often...

Reddit user JustDadThanks sparked a conversation by asking others to share the most out of touch things they’ve heard wealthy friends and family members say, and it turns out that Lucille Bluth might fit right in with them. From having no concept of money to being unable to comprehend that everyone else does not take luxurious vacations year round, we’ve gathered some of the most ridiculous quotes from rich people that prove that money doesn't buy you self-awareness. Keep reading to also find an interview with Linda McQuaig, co-author of The Trouble with Billionaires, to hear her insight on the topic.

Be sure to upvote the replies that you can’t believe were said in real life, and let us know in the comments if you have ever had a conversation with an affluent person that would warrant a spot on this list. I'm a gardener and work for clients in above mentioned destinations in their second, third, fourth villa/chateaux in Europe. My truck is over 30 years old and they just don't understand that when i need to change an engine piece that costs more money than i make and they say ...why don't you just buy a new truck? Well i would if i could but living on pasta and tuna and cheap wine plus paying my rent is barely what you pay me. Then they take the helicopter to St Tropez to their yacht. ffs.

As someone who’s own family was unalived there, this absolutely infuriates me. Visit there to learn from the mistakes of history, and to remember those who suffered in that place. Don’t visit there if you’re just going to treat it like a fun, regular vacation activity.

It seems like every day there’s a new story about the ridiculous ways rich people are spending their money. Jeff Bezos paid $5.5 billion to go to space for about four minutes. Taylor Swift owns two private jets, one of which has flown at least 170 times during 2022 already. Lady Gaga spent $50,000 on an Electro-Magnetic Field Reader, which is intended to detect ghosts. Celebrities and others in the 1% may be “people just like us”, but they definitely live in a different world from the billions of people around the world who have much less money than them.

Whether it’s inevitable to become out of touch when you reach a certain level of wealth or not, it’s definitely very easy to. If you live in a massive home in a gated community protected by a security guard, you can easily never encounter people who aren’t in your same economic class, aside from those who work for you. Someone else could be doing your grocery shopping, and you might be traveling in private jets or at least in the first-class section of commercial planes. When you’re in a bubble, it might not be so obvious that you’re inside of it.

Lol this is like people who talk about how teenagers working is 'robbing them of their childhood.' I get the sentiment but you are clearly privileged enough to say that. I worked from the age of 14 and as soon as it was legal I had 2 jobs because I wanted to-my parents couldn't afford to help me buy a car or pay for college. By the time I was 16 I bought my own groceries because with my parents it was 'you eat what we eat or you don't eat' and I didn't like the food my mom made. If I wanted anything extra like money to go to a movie or hang out with friends, I paid for that for the most part. Occasionally my mom would give me 5-10 dollars but...I needed to work so I could be prepared for when I turned 18 and went off to college.

I actually was in the rich guy's situation, got to admit. I do have an excuse though, since i live in a country with public higher education (until you hit a certain age at least, after which you're not forbidden to use it but the entry system is stacked against you) and i lived with my parents, who literally said "we will cover all your living expenses on the condition you study and pursue a career". I left the family home and have been making ends meet somehow ever since i flunked Med U, despite trying to pursue different studies a few times (and never being able to either afford them or to reconcile them with work and private life).

Little bit guilty. I never got memorizing the price of milk. You need it, you buy it. A 10 or even 50 cent difference is probably not going to change that calculus. Like I'd have a sense of it (thus recognizing times like right now when it's -way- up), wouldn't be full-on Bill Gates on the price is right ('uhh.. $15?') but I knew multiple people who tracked it to the cent, habitually. Would drive to three different stores to save 75 cents total on milk and eggs. Wild.

Now, I’m not defending rich people for saying out of touch things or lacking self-awareness. It is certainly their responsibility to recognize their privilege and try to use their resources for good. But what a privilege it would be to think nobody needs a job until they are out of college or to assume that anyone can hop on a plane to Hawaii whenever they need to unwind. Money may not be able to buy you happiness, but apparently, it can buy you ignorance. And ignorance is bliss right?

The thing about wealth, though, is that it’s not all about just working hard and excelling in school. It comes down to many factors, such as luck, family background, resources, connections and how much generational wealth you inherit. If it was so easy to accumulate money, don’t you think more people would be doing it? The reality is that it can be extremely hard to even get the opportunity to acquire riches. Most people know this because most people aren’t rich. In fact, 65% of Americans believe that the main reason a person becomes wealthy is because they have had more advantages in life, and 71% of Americans believe that poor people are in their current situation because they have faced more adversity. So people who get to vacation in other countries, fly in private jets and have personal chefs preparing their meals are extremely unrelatable to most of the world. The least they can do is acknowledge that.

My siblings had it bad - they went straight to college so they had to put my parents' salaries on their financial aid applications. My dad made a lot of money, but refused to give us any for college, so my siblings weren't able to get any financial aid because my dad made too much. I actually had friends who got married at 18 only so that they wouldn't have to put their parents' financial info on their financial aid applications. The whole system sucks

It's ridiculous that financial aid is like that, for this reason. Parents aren't required to pay for their kids college, so why would their income be factored in? It's like the people making the system don't understand that not everyone (even people who technically make above the threshold) can or will pay for their kids to go to college.

The difference of salary between the worst paid profession and best paid one should be 100% most. I just hate seeing people struggle just because they do “wrong” jobs and their boss buying second yacht this year. Capitalism might be the best system we have, except it’s not.

I'm also against ridiculously high wages and pro for a living wage for everyone, but there has to be some sort of difference. Why would anyone take the responsibility and stress of a doctor, manager or captain of a ship when you can earn half of it by just working a normal 9-5 Job?

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying My mother has become very wealthy and out of touch. She's made lucky investments but doesn't share her wealth at all. So when I couldn't qualify for a student loan (my identity was stolen when I was a kid. It's fixed now) or get financial aid (because I still fell under her financial umbrella as far as aid is concerned. They just assume if your parents have money, they'll help.) she was furious that I had to give up on my big college dreams. "I paid for college with a part-time waitress job after class. Just do that!" Her university was $2,500 a year back in the 70s! The older generations getting annoyed at the younger generations for wanting college debt forgiveness have no f*cking idea what college debt looks like now. All this "Just pay it off like I did", bullsh*t is absolute ignorance.

The student allowance/loan system in my country is really dumb. When I went to uni I luckily qualified for government assistance every week (it's great that we have that but the system is still so problematic), but my friends who ALSO didn't receive any financial help from their parents didn't qualify because their parents earned above a certain pay bracket. What difference does it make if you're legally an adult how much your parents make? Unless they're mega rich and able to help you out which they most certainly weren't. They just happened to have two incomes and I had only one parent. And I had to send them the same signed letter every year when I reapplied saying that my mum was still dead. Ridiculous, and irrelevant

I realise how privileged I sound to complain about this as a lot of people have to work multiple jobs while at uni! I still had to work while studying on top of receiving a paltry amount of money from the government. And it's pretty unheard of here for your parents to pay anything towards tuition. The system just sucks all around, except maybe in some amazing Euro countries!

That part time job in 1972 would pay $17,000 today, factoring in inflation. Average college tuition is $44,000. It doesn't take college level math to figure out that part time job will not be enough.

Education and health care should be free for everyone. Period. Use the money that gets POURED into military, "defence", etc, and educate and care for people. Seems so weird that more money goes into being able to kill "enemies" than into taking care of and educating our future leaders, doctors, teachers, inventors, nurses, explorers, scientists, etc. SMH.

I don't even understand the notion that just because your parents make "a lot" that somehow that means they definitely make enough to help put their kids through college. Some people have elderly parents/in-laws/relatives that need chemo or other asinine-priced medical care. Some people have ten kids. Some people have expenses that others don't, the fact that systems are built solely around how much you make per year is ridiculous.

My dad "I don't know why you're having so much trouble paying tuition/rent. I only worked summers for $1 an hour and didn't have trouble." His tuition (including fees and books) was $56 and room and board was $22 a semester. I was paying $600 a quarter (plus books and fees) for college (yeah, I'm old) and $200 a month rent (plus food and utilities) - and making $5 an hour (which was more than minimum wage).. "Um, Dad, you're an engineer. Do the math. Tuition is 12x as much, rent is 30x more, and I'm making 5x as much." He still didn't get it. It's much, much, much worse now.

Another short sighted system. In the US if someone completes training, often it took them 5 or six years to complete and they were so tried and stressed they didn't learn as much as they could. In EU places where higher ed is fee free, people start working sooner, are more proficient at their jobs, means the whole society is happier and richer. Plus I like that the kid of an immigrant working at McDonald's has almost as much opportunity as the crown princesses to get into a university.

I had to take the legal documents to my finial aid office every year while they freaked out and asked if I had money for food. I called it my annual walk of shame. guess who was lined up at my door begging for money after graduation? yeup. I moved out of state.

To gain some insight on the topic of the extremely wealthy, we reached out to Linda McQuaig, co-author of The Trouble with Billionaires. First, we asked Linda if she could explain for us why wealth inequality is a problem. "It’s an extremely serious problem, which is quickly and constantly getting worse," she told Bored Panda. "Basically, a small group of billionaires has come to dominate the world to a degree unimaginable even a decade ago. In addition to capturing the lion’s share of resources for themselves – as wealthy elites always have – today’s elite has attained the life-and-death power to determine whether we’ll all be able to survive the ecological crises that threaten our very existence."

Unfortunately, at my job there has been the very rare occasions ( maybe 2 or 3 in the last 9 years) near a bank holiday where our payroll company has screwed up and checks did not arrive on payday which is Friday. Fortunately, the company understood that basically the entire warehouse lived paycheck to paycheck and let everyone know that if they could not wait until Monday when the checks arrived then the company would issue them a company check. Nearly the entire warehouse needed a company written check; the office and lab maybe had 2 people.

I mentioned I couldn’t do something one of them wanted to do later that week because I couldn’t afford it - I was like 22, working two part time jobs, pretty broke. She told me she hated it when people said they couldn’t afford to do things because they just spent the money on something else and could spend it on that if they really wanted to. I was like, well I spent it on my car insurance for this month? And she doubled down and insisted that I HAD the money but I was prioritizing something else (yes, my car insurance). This isn't a "rich person out of touch" attitude though. It's a "fiscally irresponsible" approach that is common across all income bands. I used to work with a girl who maxed out her credit cards, was £19k in other debt and took every additional hour on offer to pay them off. Because she'd had a "that's Future Hannah's problem" while at uni (name changed to protect the naive). Plus she had a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget - she had to have the nice things, even knowing she couldn't afford them.

"Quite simply -- today’s super-rich play an enormous role in generating carbon emissions, through their indulgent personal lives and also through the corporations they own," Linda explained. "On top of this, they are the key players blocking government action that would allow us to battle climate change."

We also asked Linda why it's so common for wealthy people to become out of touch and not realize their privilege, but she raised another point, "I suspect most wealthy people do realize their privilege and don’t really care if we are offended by it."

Finally, we asked Linda if she has any advice for people who still aspire to be wealthy, despite actively disliking rich people. "My advice would be: Get a life – that is, a life that doesn’t do harm to others and to the planet."

The best story I read during pandemic was a bunch of rich people renting a private jet and flying to France. They were met on the tarmac by French authorities and sent home.

I heard this during the corovirus lockdown: "I don't get why the general lockdown is such a bad thing. I essentially got a payraise because I worked from home and didn't have to commute or get dressed to work." Signed: the essential workers who couldn't sit home being isolated, including those who delivered food and groceries to your dumba$$ so you could complain about WFH.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying Not a woman, but i've gotta share this one because my parents have been utterly zombified by fox news. My parents are very well off and they live in Texas. When the huge freeze hit their home and they lost power, they quickly booked a week long vacation to Honduras to wait it out. Ever since, they've made a bunch of dumb comments along the lines of, "why doesn't everyone just keep a vacation fund so they can leave Texas when hurricanes and blizzards hit? We all know they're coming, most people just refuse to save money and want everyone else to come save them." I don't talk to those ghouls any more than i have to these days.

Yes, I am sure the elderly and disabled living on social security and people who were working several minimum wage jobs while barely able to feed their families could afford to save for a "vacation fund." Instead of just expecting their government to plan ahead for weather emergencies and keep the power on. 🙄

Lol these are the people who end up becoming our leaders or vote conservatively and just think people don't try hard enough and that's why they're poor. And it's because they just have no scope or understanding of how the world works for 98% of people. They're in this protected bubble. I think everyone, regardless of wealth, should have to do some kind of community service in high school, private or public. And I'm not talking a soup kitchen for an hour a week. I mean social services like working with people with disabilities, in the foster care system, rape and abuse clinics, health and educational services, etc. for 1 day a week like a Work Study. So when they get older they realize how fortunate they are and don't vote down my rights because they don't understand how the rest of the world works.

I live in the US. Been skiing since I was 4 years old. The prices for a day of skiing is crazy high. In Washington State where I live my closest 3 hills to ski on the cheapest is about $70+ The other two are closer to $100 for the day. That is just the lift ticket. If you have to include rentals and food at the mountain as well it could easily go up to $300 for the day. I normally budget about $200 a day for a ski trip (as I have my own equipment). Due to that fact I am only able to go once or twice a year if I am lucky.

Some prices to get an idea of the cost to ski in Western Europe (French / Swiss Alps) : renting the gear for a week is between 120 and 300 euros depending on your level (excluding expert/competition gear) A day pass is between 40 and 80 euros depending on the domain, a week pass is six times that (7 days for the price of 6 almost everywhere). Renting a small apartment for 4 people starts at 800 euros a week (off public holidays). At the end it is possible to spend a whole week skiing in one of the best domains in the world for 600 euros (without the cost of traveling that obviously depends largely on where you live). That’s not as expensive as some people think. Not cheap but not a luxury either.

Wealthy people tend to be out of touch about a lot of things: how much groceries cost, how often the average person can take a vacation, how challenging it is for many parents to afford childcare, and how much of their paycheck the average person has left to put into savings at the end of the month. One thing in particular that many affluent people don’t understand is how high their salaries actually are. Arwa Mahdawi explored this issue in an article for The Guardian, where she noted that, when asked how much money they thought the average American made per year, one quarter of the students in a class at the University of Pennsylvania assumed that it must be six-figures. One student even guessed as high as $800,000 a year. The actual answer? $53,838.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying This was right before the pandemic began and we were seeing a spike in BTC's worth. Not only could I not afford a whole coin, I'm an immigrant who just entered the workforce so I didn't have my own credit card and my dad was strictly against crypto, so that was my situation. Anyways, I was telling about how I forecast an immense increase given how everyone was starting to allow cryptocurrency as a payment, and this friend of mine, H, just casually went, "oh yeah! I don't know how to use it either so my dad got me like 2 coins, I think, to play around with", in a very as-a-matter-of-fact tone. Then she goes, "why not just ask your dad to get you a few (coins)? It's really fun!" Each coin was worth 22.5k that day, I remember it vividly.

There’s another frustration about being poor in this one. I can’t tell you how many great opportunities I have seen to get in on the ground floor of a business, that actually boomed hugely, pass me by, simply because I didn’t have the money to invest in them. I remember when they were building cellphone towers, and assigning territories to people who wanted to start local cellphone companies. I think the minimum cost for the rights to a specific territory was about $10000. That was back in the late eighties to early nineties, right before cellphone use really took off. Could’ve made a bundle, but didn’t have the money to get started. Another one is real estate-related. I live about 30 miles from an east coast beach resort. Back in the early seventies, it was still a small beach town, with plenty of empty beachfront property that happened to be a couple miles away from the boardwalk area. My older brothers, who didn’t have the means, kept trying to convince my father, who did have the means, to buy some of it, as it was selling for a song. He laughed them off and didn’t do it. Within 10 years, that property was developed, with high rise condo buildings popping all over it, and extremely expensive to purchase. We could’ve made an enormous profit from that land if my father had bought any of it. My brothers were so frustrated about it. They saw the value in the investment while the price was low, but didn’t have the money to take advantage of it. A rich person could’ve bought several parcels of that land before it was developed, never even missed the cash, and ended up even richer when the price skyrocketed. That’s what rich people don’t get. Just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you can’t see a potential goldmine in something, you don’t have any rusty old money laying around to take advantage of the opportunity.

I watch a lot of court shows like Judge Judy and People's Court and there's always someone who tries to convince the judge they are not lying by saying they're a "good Christian' or they didn't get something in writing because "he told me he was a Christian" as if that means anything. 'Kindness of your heart' never ends up being both ways. They expect if from you but never give it, especially if money is involved.

It’s not only that. It’s the fact that it is the landlord’s responsibility to fix things. Yes, I could replace the rotten planks of wood behind the front door but why should I have to spend badly needed money on materials to do the job. It’s the principles involved. This is why I haven’t been able to use my front door to access my garden and hang my washing out for the last 4 years!

I am a land lord and that is the scummiest thing (I only rent rooms from my own house). There's no real ethical way to do land lording, but there's such a thing as not being blindingly evil. The land lord is responsible for all running costs of the house, from large appliances to repairs to yard keep, to taxes. That's the entire f*****g point of why other people pay YOU f*****g rent you absolute failure of a human being. It's not to subsidize your entire f****n' lifestyle, it's to cover -costs- with a SMALL profit for you dealing with s**t over them having to deal with it, and if you can't be bothered to even do that much you need to just go suck off a tailpipe for the carbon monoxide intake and do us all a favor.

Mahdawi goes on to note that it’s not surprising these students were so out of touch when it comes to the average salaries Americans earn, though. The average student at the University of Pennsylvania comes from a family earning about $195,000 per year, and a staggering 19% of their students come from families in the 1%. On the other hand, only 3.3% of Penn students come from families in the bottom 20% of wealth in the US. Rich people run in the same circles as one another their entire lives, from the time they begin attending private schools as children to when they inherit their parents’ businesses later on in life. It may be annoying that they often have no concept of how the other half lives, but it is not shocking.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying I was around 14 and was at church on a Wednesday night. Being Baptists, several of us were standing there talking about food and I mentioned that pinto beans and cornbread is one of my favorite meals. One of the wealthier women in my church looked at me and said, “That’s poor people food. I don’t eat things like that.” A year after college, I was at work and trying to get to know a new coworker. She was talking about all of the trips she’s taken and the places she’s been. When she asked where I had traveled, I said that I’ve never been out of the USA, and that I don’t even have a passport. She looked at me incredulously and said something about how I should travel because it broadens the mind (how ironic considering how close-minded she was about poverty in the US). She then said I should really get my passport because then opportunities to travel would just pop up. Sure, I make $24k a year, so not having a passport is the only thing preventing me from traveling. I just blankly stared at her until someone changed the subject.

However, it’s really annoying when a bank, building society or our idiotic Government insist on having a passport as a means of verification. I am certainly not paying for something when I know it will not get used for the purpose it’s designed for.

When I was a kid, a well-to-do neighbor fell on hard times. The wife had grown up in a well-to-do southern (American) family, went on to be a high-end model and was sufficiently down to earth to examine every garment she modeled for construction ideas so she could tailor her own later. Anyway. Hard times. One day she told my mom "I just found out that dried black eyed peas are GOOD!" My mom laughed and said, "Lady, hard times have done you some good!" I imagine they both had a good laugh.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying I used to work for a wealthy housewife, house sitting and tutoring her son. She was a very sweet, kind person who always very friendly with people around her, including staff and waiters and the like. Definitely not a snob. But one time she told me she thought hotel maids (she would stay at fancy hotels for weeks on end at times) must have such nice lives because their jobs are so easy and relaxing and they probably make good money doing it. That she might consider doing that if she ever wanted to get a job, just for fun. You see, despite having house cleaners come in several times a week she sometimes did some chores around her house and found it pleasant so of course, being a hotel maid is similar.

This reminds me of the customers I used to help at a retail plant nursery in Oklahoma, that would go on and on about how lucky I was to have such a fun easy job. Yeah, dipshit, watering in a 125 degree greenhouse and loading up hundreds of 40 pound bags of soil and stinking compost on a sunny day in August is soooo much fun. The few times we hired customers it did not go well. "Wah, it's so hot in the greenhouse." No sh*t. That's why they call it "the greenhouse effect." People can be embarrassingly stupid.

I can tell you from experience that being a hotel housekeeper is NOT easy or relaxing. Especially at a fancy hotel where guests have an attitude that the "maid" will clean up whatever mess they make & therefore are slobs.

I am well-offish, definitely not close to ‘rich’ territory. The important thing to remember is that I have been terribly poor and a refugee in my life. So I do have a LOT of experience in all kinds of money situations. But, ever since I am well off, everyone sees anything I say as if I was born in a royal family. My husband even has made a joke out of it, where he deliberately leads people down that path they so badly want to take. Even my best friend once taunted the hell out of a petty acquaintance, making her believe my 2 day city weekend with a low cost airline was some high end luxury trip. My sister, who came out of the same poverty as me and worked her way to be a wealthy businesswoman will often tell people that she was the happiest when she was a waitress, and she has a very good explanation why. People probably also think she is out of touch. So, sometimes, its what people choose to see you as.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying In our college friend group one woman in particular has become wealthy over the years, wealthy enough to fly NetJets and maintain a townhouse in NYC as a pied a terre. The rest of us are just hoping we can one day retire. To her credit, she makes efforts to stay in touch. When she's in town, she always organizes a dinner and the rest of us are always happy to see her. At the last dinner, we talking about how difficult it was to buy a car post-pandemic. She said, "In our world, nobody can buy a boat." The rest of us made a lot of eye contact over that one.

Even politicians often have little concept of how much their constituents need to earn to have a decent quality of life. In 2021, the mayoral candidates in New York City were asked by The New York Times how much they thought the median price of purchasing a home in Brooklyn would be. Investment banker Raymond J McGuire guessed, “It’s got to be somewhere in the $80,000 to $90,000 range, if not higher.” Shaun Donovan, Barack Obama’s former housing secretary and former mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg’s housing commissioner said it would probably be “around $100,000”. The actual answer was $900,000. It’s no wonder rich people don’t care about average Joes. They are completely blind to how hard it is for people earning less than them.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying I have an uncle who was mad when we didn’t fly to Fiji for his son’s second wedding. With flights, hotel, gifts, etc the price came out to nearly $23,000 for my family of four. I was in my early twenties and had just started out in a new job. When we said we couldn’t afford to go, he snapped and told us if we really wanted to, we could save for year to afford it. He couldn’t wrap his head around why we couldn’t save an extra $2,000 a month to attend.

I think that the couples should pay tickets and accomodations for the people they invite when they have a destination wedding. Does not make sense to expect from others to pay all that money to come to your wedding no matter the relationship. If you want them there it is you that should make it possible.

My family isn't rich at all but I have a similar story. One of my cousins wanted to have a destination wedding at a resort town here in BC. We would have had to pay for the hotels ourselves, none of which are cheap. And he wanted to do it over Christmas. I was working at a grocery store at the time, there was no way I was getting time off. Even his father, who is very laid back, was pissed. None of us went.

We had an extended family member plan a beach wedding. We could fly for $$$$ or we could drive all day long. DW and I decided that she should just drive with her parents, I'd stay home with our kids to reduce costs. At the last second the bride and groom broke up. Everyone was on the hook with non-refundable reservations so DW and relatives had a weekend vacation instead. We are financially okay after all these years b/c of careful choices and strategic spending. Not spending it b/c some impulsive person who never spends time with us thinks we ought to fly some where so they can get married.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying I was talking to a friend once about the fact I was saving hard because I wanted to make sure I would always be financially independent, after I had been through a relationship breakdown. She was a casual contract academic and her husband an investment banker, but she told me she didn't have any savings of her own as her income was spending money for luxuries, essentially. I didn't think much of it, but the next day she texted me to say she'd discussed it with her husband and he'd transferred her £100k into a bank account in her own name. It was so tone deaf... I was happy for her in a way, but also I have just worked my a*s off for two years to save one fifth of that and you just go home and your husband sends you a huuuuuge amount of cash just because? I just didn't need to be told that, you know. It sat really weirdly with me.

Again, I do not see any bad intention, just, as OP said, tone deafness. The friend told her this because she wanted to show that she found OP's approach reasonable and wanted to adapt it for herself. That is a compliment, in my book. That she has other possibilities for this than OP is not her fault. I doubt very much that OP "was happy for her in a way", it sounds very much like good old jealousy. Be proud that you worked for your money - it does not lose its value because somebody else got it easier!

I had a trust fund wealthy friend who must have told me 10 times about the $12,000 refrigerator she was redoing her kitchen with. She came to visit and complained constantly about why I wouldn't replace my refrigerator with the broken ice maker. I didn't have $1200, let alone 12,000. She also insisted on showing me one of her investment accounts (13 million) and help her look up her social security record, which showed she never made more than a few hundred dollars a year for about 3 years, at jobs when she was young, and doesn't qualify for social security. She was very upset about that.

Why do people begrudge others having nice things? If this were my friend I would be happy for her, not jealous. Being financially dependent on someone else is scary. Despite the fact that she was living a life of luxury, if the guy had ever left she would have been in bad shape. It's nice that he was willing to set something aside just for her in case she needed it.

But the OP is doing the same thing to all of us that couldn't possibly dream of being able to save 20k in 2 years! 😛 The friend doesn't seem to be intentionally bragging or rubbing it in, just agreeing with OP's suggestion & demonstrating that she'd put it into action.

I have to admit that for some time in my adult life, I also couldn't imagine how absolutely easy it is to become homeless, and how difficult it is to get out of it. If no one has ever told you, or you have never read any of the gut-wrenching stories about people ending up homeless in one way or another, it is rather unimaginable, especially when you live in a country with an OK social security system. Because you would think that help would be available (spoiler: this is not the case!). So, while saying it is people's own fault is wrong and a bit of a d**k move, I do think it often comes from a place of ignorance / not having been educated on the matter, and not necessarily from a place of dickishness.

People who say that have zero idea how much LUCK played a role in their luxury. Luck to have adequate parents, luck to be born in certain countries, luck to have access to education, luck to health. Certainly some folks rise about bad luck but most get a whole host of benefits based on luck.

Earlier this year, Kim Kardashian was quoted sharing her “best advice for women in business”. She said, “Get your [butt] up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.” And while she was immediately ridiculed online for her ignorant and out of touch statement, the fact is that she’s just wrong. Okay, maybe a lot of people don’t want to work, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t billions of people around the world working incredibly hard who will never acquire one tenth of the amount of wealth she has. In fact, in the United States, employment rates are at about 3.7% right now, which is 1.5 percentage points lower than it was in August 2021. People might be frequently resigning due to poor working conditions, but they search for other jobs. And it’s not because they don’t want to work or work hard; it's because they want to be treated well and compensated poorly. The idea that Kim Kardashian is “self-made” is laughable, as is the implication that she works harder than most people.

The OP's mistake was to try to defend her and her husband's plans and decisions in the first place. When people demand "Why don't you have children yet?", the best response is to c**k your head to one side and give them a disapproving glare. Similar reaction I get when I tell people who ask if we will have more kids (aside from my bonus kids) that we are waiting to be a little more settled financially beforehand. "Oh, well then you'll NEVER have kids! There's never a perfect time!" True, but never said I was waiting for the perfect time, just the time that I won't have to struggle to pay for baby things/needs as well as which bill to pay for the month.

Yeah, I wanted just one child of my own. Now I've got twins and a stepdaughter. Anyone should always remember: Even safe s*x can get you pregnant. Even one pregnancy can land you with several children. Even one child can bring challenges you never dreamed of. - If you think you're ready for a child, think if you could handle two, and give enough of your love, time and money, and still be satisfied with your choice. If the answer is yes, THEN you might be ready to try.

I think this is the problem with a lot of people's thinking. If I had a child, I'd want to give them the very best upbringing I could. If that means that I prefer my kid to be homeschooled or to go to private school where they may get a better or specialized education, or if I want to live a certain way without struggling and I decide that I only want to have one...I feel like there's this pushback from family and friends sometimes as to why we would 'limit ourselves' to only having one because, like you said you 'make it work'. I don't want to make it work- I don't want to struggle for the sake of simply having more children. People who are trying to make more responsible decisions get so much pressure from people around them or they're treated like something is wrong with them if they decide to invest their time and money into one child rather than spreading everything thin for the sake of having more family.

People need to mind their own business about the personal choices of others regarding children, especially if they don't want to have uncomfortable conversations. Although, honestly, as an old person, my best advice to young people is DON'T DO IT. The world is going to be largly unliveable in another 60 years, because the door has already closed on preventing radical climate change. I feel so sorry for my 4 year old great nephew. I'm glad I only have another 30 years left in me, max.

Your friend is partially right actually. I doubt he could explain why though. The amount of available credit (percentage-wise) has a large impact on your credit score. So if you have a credit card or two you can manage responsibly (pay it off every month) then if would raise your score. Easiest way is to just put bills you would normally pay on the card(s) and then pay them with the bill money you spend anyway. If you use a rewards card like airlines miles, then you can get very cheap flights occasionally too. Not knowing how to use a system to your advantage just keeps you down.

I agree. I'm a banker and a lot of people don't understand how credit works. Your rating doesn't generally have to do with the amount of credit you have, it's how it's used. That's why sometimes people who have no credit cards, pay off their cards before they're even due, or even have no debt are sometimes not approved for loans when they do apply. Your creditworthiness is dependent on how you responsibly use credit, not how you *don't* use it at all. Banks want to make money so they want to see that you pay your bills on time but if you constantly pay it off before the interest is assessed then they don't consider you a good risk. Making regular, on-time payments is the best way to build your credit. Which is why secured credit cards are offered to people trying to rebuild bad credit. You put $500 on a card and then use it and make monthly payments. Little to no risk for the cc company, they make interest and you still get a good bump in your credit for making on time payments.

If more than one kid is too expensive then just remain childfree . Having only one child is very selfish , to my way of thinking. I have a nephew who is an only child. His parents are wealthy and he had a great life , traveling , life experiences, stuff, cars, education , etc. when he was young. His parents are in their 70s and he worries how he will cope (emotionally) if /when they become infirm . He is not wealthy & he & his wife prefer to raise their own kids on the money they earn. He does feel alone at times and I think his parents would be surprised and ashamed that their choice has adversely affected their only child to such a degree. He wonders what it would be like to have a sibling to share the burden of his demanding & selfish parents. I try to reassure him that having siblings does not always make life easier or more pleasant. Of course he doesn't believe me 8-)

Yeah, it's kinda the other way around even. The more money you have the better opportunities you have to take care of yourself, get well educated, stay healthy etc. The wealthier you are the more recourses you have to reach for your full potential in whatever aspect you decide.

You're right, the boss knows how much is being earned by the employee BUT people aren't always privy to what other responsibilities people have. So while the boss thinks the employee can afford a 1k flight, the employee knows their money goes to much more important things. I don't think the boss is wrong but more clueless if anything.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying My aunt, who grew up as one of seven kids in an a lower middle class home, married well at 20 because she was knocked up. My uncle took over his dad’s company in metal polishing when they were young, so she has been wealthy most of her adult life. During the first term of Obama’s presidency, she shared some awful email chain letter about him that had inaccurate information and racist dog whistles. I replied with the facts on each of the items and pointed out the racism. She replied back that I was “being disrespectful,” and Obama’s Affordable Care Act was going to “bankrupt” my uncle by requiring he provide health insurance to his workers. I was a high school teacher at the time, and all of her brothers worked as unionized tradesmen. She has not had a job a day in her life.

To me, if your business would go bankrupt because it had to provide a living wage/ benefits, then it should have never been in business to begin with. If your employees are on food stamps/ need government help for healthcare, that makes you, the business, as the biggest tick on our system. And on a different note, if US companies acknowledge that healthcare costs them so much, why are they supporting universal healthcare? The only reason I can think of is control. If you need your company for your healthcare, you will put up with much nonsense from them.

The past decade has changed the relationship between us (wife and I) and some family plus some friends. We can be friends with people who we disagree with - but racism, misogyny, and bigoted attitudes are full stop problems.

As my friend was checking out, she kept saying how tired the cashier looked and telling him that he should take a vacation. And he was just like.. She grew up VERY privileged and recently bought a house at the age of 21, goes on dumb vacations all the time, eats out multiple times a week, etc. I was cringing the whole time. What makes her think this obviously overworked convenience store cashier has the time or money to afford to go on a vacation??? Everyone's bitching about you, Yoga Kitty, so I'll just jump in for a moment: Yoga Kitty isn't trying to defend the friend, to start. They've only said that maybe it's important to educate someone who has so much money they've lost touch with reality. That's the point of this whole thread, too, right? It isn't making fun of people who are rich (okay it is a little), but the point of it is that sometimes people with money start acting strange because they don't understand how most people's lives work. Yoga Kitty is just choosing to be kind to these wealthy elites and give them the benefit of the doubt, and I say why not? Some of y'all are being unnecessarily rude (and I solemnly swear I'm not rich I've been homeless), I think, when it's okay that Yoga Kitty has a different opinion🤷.

Problem with the stimulus payments was: everyone who busted their a**e working longer shifts (because so many people weren't working), were forgotten. All of us who put our health out there on the line EVERY DAY were treated like garbage. I had COVID 4 times. Not once was I paid for sick leave, not once was I thanked for working through the b******t, not a single penny of a raise...in fact, I was regularly treated like c**p by those who weren't working. I was so "lucky". The same people who called me lucky, put in applications with ridiculous starting wage requests and made 4x's more than me in a month to AVOID getting a job. Maybe I'm just pissed at myself for not *screwing the system*. The payments SHOULD have been reduced for the unemployed and some should have been put toward the employed.

Not exactly the same thing but when our offspring's friend group reached driving age, several of the parents we knew went out and bought pretty decent used cars for their teens. Despite the higher than normal prices. Like $5K cars. We simply handed the keys to our sub-$1K 20 year old Chevy to our teen and told them to take care of it. And they do. Some of the friend group cars have been banged up, broken, etc. Our teen just happily keeps driving their well cared for but aged Chevy. We're quietly proud of our family's frugality. It has helped us respond to life's little challenges with less stress.

Shockingly, I'm not shopping for expensive clothes when I'm working 16 hours a week.

Sorority elitism is something I don’t get. College/university is a place where people from differing backgrounds go to study. Why are there different tiers of students? Oxbridge colleges don’t count because they’re already elitist.

The apartment I live in right now is pretty pricey, but on par for the city (but housing here is not on par with paychecks unfortunately), what I have been seeing more and more of is in the mail room people are eaving boxes with food bank items in them. The stuff they were not going to use for other people to take if they wanted it.

30 Times Rich People Made It Clear To Everyone Else Just How Out Of Touch They Are Without Even Trying I used to work for a family who were private plane rich. As in they literally owned a challenger, and the husband used it so often for work that they had a full time pilot and flight attendant on staff, and it functioned basically like a car for him. He had offices around the country. I was their household manager. The plane wasn’t part of my job when I first started (they eased staff/me in to the wild fullness of their wealth). I knew they had it and that they were using it for work and family travel long before she told me, from other staff. When she did tell me about it, because I was traveling with them for work for the first time, she said: “I feel really weird about it, but I just have to remember that my husband is 10 years older than me, and he’s just in the phase of life where he needs a plane.”

One thing about rich people is that they often just fall into it. Nothing to do with hard work, intelligence or talent. Just luck. And they know it. So they feel awkward about having so much money. That's why governments should simply tax people properly.

Yeah I get that. I tend to buy clothes and then use them up until there are holes in them. So I have a very simple wardrobe and mostly wear the same shoes until they are ruined. Last time I bought two pair of shoes on sale. I haven't even worn the other pair yet. My favorite place to shop is a Mom 'n Pop shoe store where they sell used shoes and returns. So $150 shoes for $40 that are either new or 95% new.

Also how she allowed her brother to ra*pe me when I was 8 and told me that no one would believe an 8 year old over 2 adults who say nothing happened. The only reply I got from him was that I should have dealt with it by now as it was over 40 years ago. I still have nightmares about it and when I close my eyes I see him over me. Their wedding was paid for by her parents and they also gifted them a down payment on a house as a wedding gift. Once they were married, she left her job at Ross because her aunt got her a good paying job working for the state. They ended up buying a house next door to her retired parents who take care of their children all day and even prepare dinner for them, tidy up their house, etc., so they can come home and relax. My friend and I were driving in to work and I was bitching about my financial headaches, saying that a spending money on my car wasn’t worth it but I couldn’t afford a new car. “Oh speaking of cars, (Her husband) is getting a new Audi!” No matter how much (or little) money I will ever make in my life, I will never forget how that airhead comment made me feel.
