After all, around 6.3 million animals enter shelters any given year in the US alone. Good on you!! My Mum used to do this, she lived near a river/sea estuary and had a lovely shady not too long walk from her orchard home to the sea - one dog Miranda (an alsation/mutt something) was 12 already but lived another 5 years! Great pals, and something i want to do too when i retire!

I know everyone says this, but you are (probably) giving him the best life you can. He almost definitely knows and appreciates that. One day, he may be sick and hurting and there will be very little you can do to help him. When that day comes, he will know that you've done everything you could for him and no matter where he goes next, you two will always be a part of each other.

Death affects people differently. For example, I've always been minimally sad about pet deaths even as a little kid. I missed having them around, but I don't believe death is the end of life. To me, it's exactly the same as missing a friend who's studying abroad. I miss my dog, but I know we'll meet again someday when both of our souls are older and wiser. I don't know if OP feels that way about death or if they just accept the sadness, but adopting older pets is something anyone should do if their hearts can handle it

To learn more about pet adoption and the key factors people should consider before welcoming a dog or cat into their home, we reached out to Clare Hemington, a cat behaviorist and owner of Honeysuckle Cat Toys which has twice been voted as Best Cat Toy in the UK. When it comes to rescuing an animal, she explained that you should do everything in your power to avoid saying, "If only I had known that before I went ahead."
"Many of the potential pitfalls that come with pet ownership can be avoided by preparation," she told Bored Panda. "So, if you think you might be interested in pet adoption, it’s important to do research to ensure you will be a suitable owner and choose the pet that’s right for you."
According to Sally Chamberlain, a UK-based clinical animal behaviorist, founder of Karma Paws Pet Care, and author of Power Of The Purr, time and money are often the biggest issues someone might have when taking this big step. "A lot of commitment is required when adopting an animal because they will need you to spend a lot of time with them, especially at first, when they are getting used to you and their new living environment," she told us.

"Money is also another major consideration," Chamberlain added. "Along with veterinary bills comes the cost of food, toys, beds and other resources and enrichment items that an animal will need. Pet insurance will be another expense, and hiring a pet sitter or other pet care option when you go on holiday."
Of course, you should also be mindful of the species you want to take on so you can meet their needs and understand whether your home is suitable for them to stay happy and healthy. "For instance, do [you] have enough space for a lively dog, including a garden for them to play in and go to the toilet?" Another thing that you should take into account (and a very important one!) is that a lot of patience will be required. "It can take a long time to build a bond with an animal, especially if they have come from a difficult situation and find it hard to trust humans," Chamberlain added.

After all, the feeling of adopting a four-legged companion and providing a 'furever' home to them is extremely rewarding, but this decision should not be taken lightly. "Pets can bring so much joy over many years, but it’s also important to remember that pet ownership can involve not-so-joyful chores such as cleaning out litter trays, picking up dog poop and braving all weathers to take your dog for a walk," Hemington noted.
It’s no secret that preparing to take on a new companion is far from an easy task. To avoid feeling overwhelmed by all the worries coming into your head, Chamberlain suggested making a checklist about what you can offer the rescued animal. "If you live in a small apartment with no outdoor space, then it may not be ideal to adopt an energetic young dog but an older cat that is used to an indoor lifestyle might be comfortable living in that kind of environment," she explained how you should think about your home and your lifestyle.

Pitties are so sweet. They get a bad wrap but I can't say ever ever had or been around a bad one. Mine just had a bad attitude when it came to the ups and FedEx guys. Kinda like he was expecting something that never seemed to show up.

All the fear against the poor things. My dog is 12% pitbull but doesn't look like one (Besides the ears), and is the sweetest thing EVER! She puts up with my brother even when every other dog would probably have ripped off his face. WE STILL HAVE TO HIDE IT! lily-629e8...eaa19f.jpg

After all, animal welfare always needs to come first, Chamberlain argued. "Animals can become ill and need medical care, and they also have constant needs that have to be met on a regular basis, such as a reliable routine, food, water, flea and worm treatments, grooming, a safe place to sleep and enrichment such as play and going for a walk, amongst many other things." Even when you check every box on the list, you should think about the emotional factor as well. "Not many animals will outlive us, and we have to be prepared to make difficult decisions towards the end of their lives," the clinical animal behaviorist said.

Look, that person is well meaning, but not doing the crow any favors. When rescuing wild animals, you have to do your utmost to keep them wild, provide them with company from the same species and not have them "imprint" on humans. Which is what most likely happened with this poor feathered fellow. Yeah, it won't leave - because it thinks humans are its kind and it has never learned to be a crow with normal crow behavior. It's not meant to be a pet, and will most likely cause all sorts of issues once adult, because it will get too close to people and try to fight, mate etc. them, until people want to get rid of it. Seen that happen so many times. Leave wildlife rescue to professionals or at least ask them for advice on how to do it properly.

We have 3 that stay in our back yard a lot, they live in the woods behind us. They've been here for 8 years and love to play/mess with my pitbull's outside toys and play in his wading pool. I named them Poe, Lenore, and Nevermore. I know, not very original but we enjoy the names and the little murder!

This is a typical boxer dog... I loved and miss mine with a passion! Don't know about IKEA... but think mine came from a circus! Contortionist (as shown in pic, they get themselves into some funny shapes, lying in almost impossible places!) / clown (they always make you laugh... the clown of the dog world!) / Impressionist (thinks they are human!) / Ring Leader (as they are the boss and live by their own rules!) / record breaker (farts per minute) / gymnast/ parkour runner (they can scale most walls, fences and gates with one jump! Even kitchen benches and tables if there is food on the go!) Also of a nanny (their patience, love and protection of all children and their adult humans knows no bounds!) I honestly think boxers are one of the best dogs around!! 🐕 ❤️

I love a cat with personality, but, to be fair, "adorable" isn't exactly the first adjective that comes to my mind in describing the facial expression. He looks more like the Brain from Pinky and the Brain. I would definitely adopt him for the grumpiness, would fit well with me.

The temptation to adopt a pet the second you step foot in the shelter can go through the roof, but it’s crucial to think deeply about the expectations you have for this relationship before making any long-lasting decisions. Hemington told us that, unfortunately, rescue pets don’t always come with background information about their upbringing and how they react in different situations, so they might not meet your criteria.
"If you are acquiring a pet from a rescue center, be sure to find out as much as possible, including the reasons for them being relinquished. This is especially important if you have young children," the cat behaviorist said. Plus, Chamberlain added that reputable charities will also carry out an interview with potential adopters to ensure they can offer a suitable home and are ready for the commitment.

However, she would strongly advise against looking on social media or unknown websites to adopt an animal. "There is a high risk of that animal either being very ill or having serious behavioral problems, whether or not it is 'free to a good home' or the seller is asking for money. If they do have problems, there will be no support network and the seller will no doubt have disappeared and no longer be contactable once the unwitting adopter finds out why the pet was no longer wanted."

You won’t regret it. My void Jack started out as the runt of the litter, half the size of his sisters and the only boy. He’s now the healthiest, silliest, and sweetest 15 lb cuddle bug who still doesn’t realize just how big he is. The vet fell in love with him from the very first appointment, and repeatedly calls him “ the most perfect example of cat he has ever seen”. I wouldn’t trade my Jack for anything.

I feel like pit bulls are seriously underrated and stigmatized as dogs. Correct me if I’m wrong, but in personal experience, I’ve met a lot of pitties and they’ve all been the sweetest little (or big) things, and would never hurt a fly. I wish people could be more welcoming to them, they’re always so scared of them without meeting them :/

Hemington stressed that the most important thing is to understand the species-specific needs of your rescue pet. "Although we might think of our pets as babies in furry coats, they are very different to us humans!" She noted that another consideration is whether you already have a pet at home. "This could be a particular issue for cats who by nature are territorial and might not want to share their territory with a newcomer!"
But also, let’s not forget about the golden oldie pets, Hemington said. "They still have so much to offer, and you won’t have to worry about them ruining your soft furnishings or presenting you with live, or half-eaten wildlife. They are usually just looking for a warm bed and a safe haven in which they can live out the rest of their days."

Kids or animals, there’s no such thing as privacy. My husband had this particular problem when every one of our cats were kittens. He never had cats until he met me, and the first time this happened he had to call me to come look, because he was just so amazed and kinda enchanted by it. When I told him it was because the kitten was comforted by his scent, you never saw a grown man sitting on the toilet with his pants around his ankles just absolutely beaming with happiness because a kitten fell asleep inside his underwear!

Rescue pets are these little creatures that have been through a lot, so once you provide them a new loving home, their fate is in your hands. "As a general rule, it can take around three weeks for a new cat or dog to feel safe in their new home and around another three months or so for their true character to shine through as they begin to feel more comfortable," Chamberlain explained. "It can take a long time but once they are settled in and learn that they can trust you, a rescue animal can make an amazing companion, even if they’ve had a rough start in life," she concluded.

Aww he looks like my doggo Cinnamon Toast Crunch that I had that my grandparents got me to take care of when I would stay with them over every break. I loved that dog dearly. And she loved my paw paw. When he passed when I was 20, not 2 weeks later she did too. I miss them both 20 years later.

This! Even the most beat up, scrawny, mangy looking animal with parts missing and a mean look on their face, is still beautiful, because they’re such pure little souls inside, and they love us in ways we should love everyone, and most especially them. Never ever judge a book by its cover. I’ve met a lot of people who others avoided or treated badly just because they looked mean and hard, or just beat up and damaged, on the outside. Ignoring their appearance and taking the time to get to know them paid off, and they turned out to be the most loving and caring people I’ve ever known.

She’s not ugly, she’s beautiful. She looks like a tortie, but with muted colors instead of bright. Kinda like muted calicos, where the black is gray and the orange is a light peach. Very distinctive and utterly gorgeous! Please remember to tell your neighbors they’re full of s**t.

I had 2 male voids from a litter my dear calico had (RIP Punkin!) 20+ years ago. They were rotten to the core, couldn't leave nothing alone, always tearing stuff down and breaking things, and would have the worst cases of the rips from 2am-5am every... single... night...🙄 I can't remember their original names but they came to affectionately be known as Search and Destroy!

A fractured skull at 3 months old? Why TF would someone do that—-because, even though we don’t want to admit it or even think about it, we all know that wasn’t accidental. If they ever find out who did it to this poor baby, I would like to be contacted, please. I want to look them in the eye, then quickly apply my Louisville Slugger to THEIR skull(s)—-HARD enough to fracture them!!! It would give me great pleasure to crack ‘em like an egg. (Let me clarify. I am usually a laid back, live and let live kind of person, until I learn about instances of cruelty, especially when it’s directed by bullies against the smaller and weaker. That makes me totally see red, and want to inflict the same kind of violence against them, so they can understand how much it f*****g HURT their victim(s). I want them to hurt. I want them to feel terrified, to feel pain, to feel hopeless. To want it to stop, only it doesn’t. And I f*****g hate that I feel this way, and hope for a time to come soon when it just stops. Permanently. I just wanted you to know I’m normally a non-violent kind of person, it’s just that cruelty is something I just can’t, won’t, and don’t tolerate, for any reason, even if it’s almost borderline justified. One of our cats, Smudgy, was a rough and tough street cat 10 years ago, when she crossed our yard and decided to stay. Now, she’s a slightly tubby, 100% confirmed indoor cat who sleeps on the bed, purrs like a motorcycle engine, lets you rub her belly (up to a point), and absolutely loves kisses on the top of her head. Oh, and she is the absolute queen of the household, who totally dominates and rules over the other 2 cats and the dog (who has respected her since the beginning, after she delivered several of those very audible, lightning quick cat punches to his nose).

It’s stressful living on the street, and though safer, also stressful at the shelter, what with all the mouse and activity 24/7/365. Once they’re adopted, know they finally have a home of their own, are safe, secure, fed, and lived, they can finally sleep deeply, because they don’t have to constantly be on the lookout for potential danger from other animals, especially the less evolved and vicious human animals.

The only way I would buy an animal is if paying a horrible person to get an animal away from them is the only option to save that little life—-which I would consider the best investment I could ever make.

Watch the tail closely to better communicate with a cat. I've taught my kids to think of it as a heartbeat - slow, gentle movements mean relaxed and satisfied. As the movement intensifies kitty is getting more restless - pet elsewhere or leave them be for a while. It's really fun watching the kiddos explain this to their cat-illiterate friends, zero scratches from my ginger beast so far!

You will never again have privacy in the bathroom. Objects on tables will now live on the floor. If your floofer pees anywhere but the litter box, there's a reason. Often they are mad at you but not always. If you go away for more than a few hours (work, etc.) you will get cattitude. To combat this, give lots of snuggles as soon as you walk in the door. Seriously, drop EVERYTHING and make them the most important thing when you get home. Usually only takes a minute or two but it's worth it. Dog poop bags make it really simple to clean the litter box, especially if you use clumping litter and do it daily. If you're not on a septic system, flushable litter is also an option to dispose of used litter without having to put it in the trash. If floofer is a boy, make sure to add wet food to the diet. It may add to the grocery bill but will save money and possibly a life in the long run. (Males develop urinary tract issues more often than females and the extra moisture helps)

Indoor only for sure, although if you have the time, energy, and patience and he has the will and disposition, leash training is a great option! People think you can't leash train a cat, but that's not true at all. One of mine is leash trained. It's a great way for them to work off some of that manic energy and have the chance to explore the outdoors in a way that's safe for both them and the local wildlife. If you do go for leash training, though, make sure to get a harness designed for a cat! They can too easily slip out of a collar or dog harness. And always collars, but ALWAYS breakaway! They like to climb, and that way if they fall and their collar gets caught on something, it snaps off and prevents tragedy. Also, flea, tick, and worm meds in addition to vaccines, even if he never goes outside. You never know what you've walked in. My mom's cat got worms and she's never spent a single day outside. The vet said one of the dogs likely brought the larve in on their paws. Good luck!

Establish 'nail trim, then treats' routine ASAP. -- Get at least one cat tree and put it in front of a window where they can see birds, people, and general activity if possible. -- You don't need fancy 'grain-free' cat food or anything like that unless your cat is actually diagnosed with an allergy - it's a marketing gimmick with no proven benefits and potential correlation with harm (heart issues in dogs). Any one of the major pet food brands should be fine. -- On that note, decide if you want to feed on a schedule or free-feed. Scheduled feedings are generally better for cats that overeat, or if you just want to keep a close eye on their food intake. Free feed lets you leave food out without getting someone to come in and feed the cats if you're gone for short periods - very convenient for weekend vacations. Ours have always been free-feed for dry food, with scheduled times for wet food (mostly as a treat because they like it better than the dry stuff.) -- Continued...

Ask your vet about any regional diseases you should be aware of. For instance, even indoor cats in the Southern US should be on heartworm prevention - mosquitoes go everywhere, and there isn't any treatment for the disease for cats. -- Get your cat fixed if the shelter didn't have it done already. It's not just about population control. Fixed cats are less likely to try to escape, are generally calmer and more pleasant pets, and are largely protected from reproductive cancers. -- And indoors, indoors, indoors! Indoor cats live longer than those that go outside; they're safe from cars, coyotes, dogs, abusive people, other cats, and serious diseases like FIV (the cat version of HIV), and FeLV, also known as feline leukemia. (If you do let your cat out, make sure they have current vaccines for these as well as preventative medication for fleas, ticks and other parasites.)

To get rid of them? Capstar then Dawn dish soap and vinegar. To prevent, a topical or we use Simparico.

Get her to the vet for a full checkup and blood tests and all, as well. That way, they can give pointers on flea mitigation, plus breed-specific information for her, and info about any conditions she may have that they discover through blood tests, etc—-especially if it’s something she needs to take medication for, something else the vet can give you instructions for.

FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth applied to the carpet, furniture cushions, beds (both the pets' and humans'), in hard to reach areas, and in your yard (it will only work when dry, though, so it is useless outside if there is rain) will kill the fleas that are not on the pets. In the house, apply, let sit a couple of days, vacuum, then reapply to kill anything that hatches after the first application; if the infestation is severe, you may need to repeat a few more times. It is best not to apply directly to the pets as it will dry out and irritate their skin. This works on all insects, including bedbugs, as long as you account for how long it takes them to hatch. You can use it to prevent ant infestations by applying it across entry points to your home.

I wouldn't recommend this. Diatomaceous earth is microscopic saw blades, which is why it kills bugs, it will also damage fibers and won't do your vacuum any good. Regular vacuuming along with the pets being treated with flea/tick/heartworm medications is better in my opinion.

You do need to treat the carpets etc. Fleas jump on for blood and jump off to lay eggs. Their lava survive on dirt in you carpets.

I'm not sure where you live here we treat for fleas, ticks and heartworms. I'm more comfortable with medications from a vet. Unlike several posters I don't like collars for medication. Just my personal ick factor. I get the chewables. You don't want to wait to get the fleas under control. Make sure you vacuum, often.

If you want tobavoid chemicals and have some extra time, use a flea comb 2x a day until no fleas, then once a day thereafter

I found this little guy abandoned and living in a sad little nest in someone's woodpile. His skin was hanging off his bones and there were infected scabs on his tail, but the moment I got him home he was trying to climb onto my shoulder. I nursed him back to health and he became my best friend for the rest of his life. A decade later and I still miss him. Bran-629de...f9b3be.jpg

Off topic: Does anyone here have some tips. My cat is very shy around other people and cats. I have 2 stray cats I take care off (food and cuddles) but I don't know how to introduce them to my cat. The 2 stray cats hiss and I don't know what to do. I would love to adopt them but my cat has priority. Any tips please....

Mostly patience. A stray cat adopted us but one of ours hated her. We kept them in separate rooms for safety until he got used to the idea of her being in the house but it took a good six months before he really accepted her. They were purrfectly happy in the end 😻. Try feeding them at the same time but on opposite sides of a door and make sure you have one litter tray for each cat plus one extra.

This was my favourite rescue. Not the guy, although he comes a close second, lol! The cat, Doc (his brother was Sherlock, but he died from malnutrition before we could save him), was the sweetest and smartest cat I ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. Lost him thanks to a jerk of an upstairs neighbour, but that's another tale along the riverbank. Long live, Doc! George-and...00151f.jpg
