About 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, 3.1 million are dogs. Each year, a total of 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized, which results in 390,000 dog deaths.

A few of these forgotten canines are lucky to get a second chance in life with their new forever families. Probably one of the most emotionally intense experiences is witnessing these poor animals undergo incredible transformations after they are rescued.

It’s not just that they finally get much-needed medical care, are given shelter and food, but are healed by love from the inside out.

Below we wrapped up some of the most touching and inspiring examples of dogs before and after rescue that are likely to make us shed a tear or two, and remind us that love is the strongest force on our planet.

I Found A Dog In The Jungle

I Found A Dog In The Jungle

A week ago, I was hiking the rainforest on the volcano Mount Meru, next to where I live. In the middle of the rainforest, I found a puppy. The puppy was too weak to move, and its tiny ribs and backbone poked against my fingers. I got her a blanket, soft food, water, and a bath. After 12 hours of sleep, a tiny, but very skinny puppy headed to the vet. She weighed only 2.5 kg.
A week has gone by, and I have a friend for life. She's gaining weight and strength by the day. Her name is Koda. Short for Kodama - the forest spirits in Princess Mononoke.

Ok but glad it was a dog and not like a wolf or coyote or something. I would recommend maybe not taking animals from the wild normally because not all stories end up as wholesome as this one

Did you see the pictures and think “that might be a wolf!”? If you did you did then you need to educate yourself on what wolfs and coyotes look like. That is clearly a dog.

You found a floof! This characteristic is usually reserved for cats, but a few select dogs we let in, on the provision that they remain floofed, with the exception of bathtime and rain/snow exposure.

Bored Panda reached out to this animal rescuer who runs the Home of Well-Loved Strays non-profit organization based in Floridablanca, Philippines.

“My partner and I are an LGBT couple. We've been rescuing cats and dogs since 2015. Currently, we have 20 dogs and 30+ cats,” the rescuer told us. She explained that they were living in metropolitan Manila and supported the animals on their own until Covid happened. “We got flooded in November 2020 and so we moved to the countryside.”

This Is My Sweet Girl, Queenie. We Rescued Her At 16, And She Crossed The Rainbow Bridge At The Age Of 17. Rest In Peace, Baby Q

We suspect her previous home stopped feeding her due to being incontinent and going through so many diapers. That's why she was so lethargic and underweight. She had doubled her weight by the time she passed away. It was remarkable to see her bounce back like that. And her sassy attitude, my goodness, I loved that about her.

Breaks my heart to see older dogs in shelters, and I hate anyone who treats them worse because of their age. They're nearing the end of their lives, the least you can do is give them love and make sure they're taken care of.

me and my family want to adopt older animals from shelters. We have to wait until this group passes, that'd be too much stress on us with even more animals, and it'd probably stress out the animals too. We just want to give them a good ending because they probably didn't have a great beginning

Some people are just so heartless... I have an old cat, rescued from an abusive situation, who pees outside the litterbox because she can't croutch anymore. She started peeing against the hallway bookcase for some reason, so now I just tape dog training pads on there. The smell is not very nice, but it's a very little price to pay compared to the joy of knowing she feels loved and safe in her old age.

The non-profit founder said that there are so many stray cats and dogs in the Philippines. “Some people do horrendous acts on them - throw hot water on mating cats on the roof, dump kittens near the river, shoo away dogs looking for food or eat dog meat,” she said.

Moreover, it is a common practice to tie dogs in front of houses as guards. “The locals catch strays and euthanize them. These things are the reason we decided to rescue.” The rescuer said that they prioritize adult cats or dogs that need immediate help, or kittens.

In the Philippines, the population of strays is very high. “The local government still catches strays, impounds them, then euthanizes them. Laws that are supposed to protect animals are not always enforced properly. When they are enforced, the punishment never reflects the seriousness of the abuse, neglect or cruelty. First time offence is usually just a slap on the wrist, or a small fine, and on the rare few occasions where a prison sentence is given, well the maximum is only between 2 and 5 years. Again, not a true reflection of the seriousness of the crime. Punishment needs to be far tougher and laws need to be properly enforced. Most forms of animal abuse usually go hand in hand with others crimes of a more serious nature. Investigate animal abuse and you will probably uncover other crimes too.

Sadly, the chances of rescued animals finding a new home are extremely low. “The shelters are overly full and do not take in strays anymore. Most people still prefer animals with a breed,” the rescuer explained. She hopes that more people in the Philippines will give a chance to their local dogs without breeds and that their government will offer more free spaying and neutering programs.

I love floppy ears like that. Had a dog with ears kind of like that (Mom was a husky/border-collie mix, so had a thicker quality). It was fun watching him able to lift them up higher and higher each year, as he gained more and more control over the muscles as he aged.

    Bruno, My Beloved Fighter

    Bruno, My Beloved Fighter

This is my dog, Bruno. An animal shelter rescued him from a place where he had no contact with the sun, couldn't pee, and ate spoiled food. When Bruno got better, I adopted him. I love him very much, and he means the world to me.

I hope whoever did that to him dies a slow and miserable death. It is beyond me how people can do this to an animal and think it's alright. The pain and suffering you put that animal through makes you deserving of 100x that pain. Pieces of s**t. I'm so, so glad he was rescued and now he is living the life he deserves.

People dislike it when pet owners immediately get another animal after one dies. I lived alone with my dog when she died unexpectedly after I fought desperately to save her (I did not comprehend or even entertain the idea she might not live) and the only thing that got me through the crushing grief was another dog. It’s not a betrayal to the animals you live to give a loving home to another animal in need

I got Strolch 2 weeks after Püppi died. I could literally not sleep without a dog breathing close by. I kept mourning afterwards but it helped tremendously. After him I was emotionally spent. Lou came 4 months later. Like Püppi he is my soul dog. People are different and I hate those busybodies that judge your grieve.

Sometimes, we need help in grieving. We lost my Abby (10F) in May, and I was devastated. I pretty much quit; I couldn't imagine life without her. Then, I got to poking around the pictures of kitties on the local shelter's website. The moment I first saw Chloe (10F), I knew she was mine. She was the only calico they had, and she was the same age as Abby. I went to meet her, and she fit perfectly in the kitty space in my arms. She's been here since September, and it feels like she's been here forever.

Sometimes people get health problems that prevent them from taking good care of a pet. They often put off rehoming because the animal's presence is good for them. Eventually, they realize that their pet would be better off with someone who can take better care of them. I've known people who have gone through that, and it's a truly gut-wrenching decision to have to make.

She gave everything she had to those babies. When we picked her up, she was just over 40 pounds. She's now a comfortable 62-pound dog. Most of the pups were adopted out of State, but the rescue had a get-together, and she got to see some.

It certainly takes someone with a brave heart to foster animals. I couldn't do it, as I would want to adopt each and every one. To have my heart broken over and over each time I had to give an animal back. Sure, it probably helps knowing they are going to a forever home. But still would be to hard on me. On the other hand, my whole life, my uncle is on the state's approved list to care for wild , large predator birds, when found injured or sick. Seen tons of hawks, eagles, owls, and such though him.

I get the outrage, I do. And I own dogs & cats. But...cows are awesome and sweet, too, and pigs are not only intelligent but also so much closer to humans (at least medically.) Why so much more outrage at the cats & dogs being eaten? It's the misery / maltreatment before the death that is atrocious to me, and is our 'modus operandi' for factory farming nowadays.

Before And After I Rescued My Mini-Poodle From Being Euthanized

Before And After I Rescued My Mini-Poodle From Being Euthanized

I pull senior and geriatric dogs from shelters to give them a final home and resting place. When I was going to pull a blind chihuahua, I saw this fluff ball and couldn't say no. She had lost much of her fur, had a rat tail, and had skin issues. She smelled horrific. She could barely move or walk and was listed as a special needs dog. Found out she had a thyroid issue after a vet visit, and after being on thyroid meds for 4-months, her tail is now fluffy, and she's like a fast-moving potato. All it took was a medication that cost me $5 a month to save her.

That's why one should support shelters financially. If there is no money and people doing the work there is not much they can do since in a lot of areas there is a steady influx of pets in need and not enough people adopting.

What the WHAT?!?!? Of COURSE the dog's having seizures, you tw**t! You've STARVED the dog mostly to death! I wish a pox on the person(s) who inflicted such horror onto what looks like a sweet doggie.

Ikr, some people in Asian countries eat dogs, which I already knew, but I was taken aback to know there were whole RESTAURANTS whose main dishes are dogs and they’re still in business.

When we found her, she had a chain embedded in her neck and weird tough skin all over her hocks. Our guess is she was tied up or confined in a concrete area with nothing nice to lay on and nothing to eat. The good news is she didn't hold it against us.

That’s how I ended up being our Scruffy home, during a killer heatwave, which probably would’ve killed him, considering the neglected condition he was in, before another 24 hours has passed. He was already over 3 years old, so the vet estimated he was between 5, and possibly as many as 10, years old. We had him a little over 10 years before we lost him, to conditions that showed he was most likely closer to that estimate of 10 when I brought him home. He was a terrier mix, which accounts for the longevity. But his blond fur was almost all white, and we had loved and pampered him for those last 10+ years of his life. He even had a built-in pack for company. Though they were all cats, he loved and protected them, just like he did my husband and I—-and his yard. It was actually pretty funny seeing the cats when they were tiny kittens crawling all over him, and trying to snuggle into his fur. He just let them do it too, because they were his family. RIP, Cruff-Cruff! Mom and Dad miss you terribly, and so do your feline brothers and sisters, who all looked for you for so long after you crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
