I once asked in an internet community about this and gathered that there's a whole range of versions of internal background thinking! 1) pictures and abstract thought, 2) monologue (you describing your thoughts and actions), 3) narrator (someone else describing your thoughts and actions), 4) interview (you explaining your thoughts and actions to someone else), 5) dialogue/discussion (you explaining your thought and actions to someone else *who has an opinion and might disagree*. I'm 5, mostly, with occasions of 1.

I can’t see anything but my internal monologue is chatty. It ain’t me for sure, either, she’s catty and mean and says things I morally disagree with.

It's funny how many people didn't realize, since pretty much every book ever has at leat a few instances of a character thinking to themselves in words.

I can see really detailed pictures, but not a picture exactly, a 3D real life thing. Like an apple I can see all the details on the skin, the texture of the stem, I can feel its weight, I can feel its temp, I can turn it around like it’s in my hand. I can take a bite and taste it if I want to. And I absolutely have movies too, but not a screen, actually in it. But I also have a voice, monologue mostly. And I can hear songs, and they can play in the background of whatever I’m thinking. I cannot turn them off. Right now I have the real life apple, a song I can’t even make out the words too, and I can hear me working out what I want to type. This blows my mind that others don’t have the same thing!

i wake up every morning with a song in my head. and it IS normal - for me and you and others who do the same. (i have a friend who also wakes up to music. we used to text each other every morning to find out what the songs were. lol)

Do you ever have a song in your head and you don’t even know what it is? Like your brain recorded it previously and it’s just playing in the background and you can’t control how loud it turn it off? Like my brain will play songs I don’t know the words to. Oh! I just remembered, when my son was little and he played with toys that made noise, I’d get the sounds of the toys stick in my head like a song. I’d have to stop and be like what is that and think about it to identify which toy it is. (I mentioned him being little because they repeat the same things over and over, okay the same thing repeatedly).

Well that explains why I woke up with the theme song from The Munsters in my head yesterday.

I often hear songs or tunes on waking but I’m a musician so they’re often things I’ve been working on. Sometimes it’s pop music of all kinds, though.

Yeah, it's so weird when you make grammatical errors in YOUR OWN HEAD! I literally have to correct my own thoughts.

so i kept trying to read and it yells at me LETTUCE IS gAY and then in another voice i go WELL IM GAY HOW COME I DONT LIKE LETTUCE and the first dialogue says OK HOMOPHOBIC B***H and im just staring off into space like what is happening let me sleep in peace. this kind of thing happens constantly and its always a little bit like "am i slowly going insane or have i always been like this"

Oh I regularly experience this, or did until I got irritated enough one day to say, “shut the eff up!” There was a shocked silence then a sensation that that aspect of me was going to argue but then didn’t. Fun stuff!
