Mum has light brown hair and fair skin. In contrast, dad has olive skin and jet-black hair. I'm a redhead! WTF! Dad grew a mustache after I was born to disperse the indiscreet remarks. It's red! He's beyond funny. Black hair and ginger whiskers. That's my dad.

Still on redheads, they carry a mutated version of the MC1R gene, which in addition to giving their hair its unique colour, also means they process pain differently and require higher doses of inhalational anaesthesia than non-redheads.

I was born a "toe-head" as they used to say, white-blonde hair, just like my parents, brothers, and most of my relatives. As I aged it turned "dirty blonde" then med brown. JUST LIKE almost everyone else in my family on both sides. I had to go through some chemo in my late 30s and I was without a spec of hair on my entire body for 6 months. My hair started growing again and it came back kinky (I had bone straight hair) and FLAME ORANGE! It toned down to a darker red over the course of 2 months then slowly replaced itself with light brown hair again. I asked my Mom if anyone in our family, both sides, ever had naturally red hair. "Just one, your great Grandmother, but we don't have color photos of her of course, but she had bright red hair like that her entire life until it turned white". I kind of miss that color, but not the corkscrew little ringlets that first appeared. Was it the chemicals used in my chemo cocktails or latent genes?

I love your story! Although the chemo-part is sad. Ofcourse. 😔 I hope you're okay! Okay this is a wild guess because I'm not working in genetics. The information for hair colour is on your X chromosome. And by the name of Alice I suppose you're female. So you have two X chromosomes. One from your mother's mother (mother mother mother and sofort) and one from your father's mother. The same applies for cats. Tortoiseshell cats are always females. Some of the spots on their fur one X chromosome is "dominant" and another spot the other. Which implies every cel "determined" which X chromosome it activated. So perhaps something like this was triggered by the chemo?

I had red (auburn) hair for one year (10th grade). The next year, it turned back to light brown but with a very noticeable blond streak that people thought I paid for. Before that, at any time, if you looked at individual strands of hair, you would see: red, blond, dark brown, light brown strands. Then after I got the blond streak (which went away), my hair was uniformly light brown. Very weird.

Same here! 4 colours and unfortunately the brown hair (back of my head and behind my ears) gets replaced by grey 🤔 But because I still have the blond streak I hope it doesn't stand out.

I have 2 cousins who are natural redheads. Their mother has black hair and their father has sandy brown hair. The red hair comes from my uncle's great aunt. My mother, This aunt's sister said she nearly had a heart attack when she had the first cousin and he came out with a thick mop of red hair. My other red headed cousin has 2 children. I had Ronald Mcdonald red for the first 2yrs of my life then it grew out to be a darker red / auburn & now at 37 I dye my hair to be a brighter shade of red

Red heads unite! I have auburn hair, and it's more brown than red...though I like to enhance it. My dad had the same color and I love how it has lightened over the years. Instead of going grey, he went from auburn to strawberry blonde to white.

Funnily enough, in the last... let's say 5-8 years, I've seen an increase in red-headed children where I work. It's a family-park, so I really get to see a lot of children. Interestingly, it's very often a darker, more brownish red, tending towards dark copper. Beautiful color. I've always wanted to have read hair, but it seems I'm just a boring-old blonde. My nephew might be a tad reddish, though - too early to say.

That's incorect. All of us have the same genes, what you have to say is that both parents need to possess the variant (allele) for red hair. That could be possible if both parents are red-haired or if they are carriers of the genetic variant but have a different hair color

I guess the majority of red-haired people are caucasian, esp. north-western European. Since the western world is big on capitalism, "thanks" to the US, and thus on advertising and has a higher percentage of red-haired, I'm not surprised the number of red-haired ad actors is much higher compared to the global population. Though 30% is still surprisingly high.

In my family they believe that there is a red hair curse. The first born child of anyone in my family is always a redhead (this has always been the case and records support it). If you have a second child that is also a redhead, your first born will die before reaching adulthood. My big brother was a redhead and he was follow by my sister, another redhead. 18 months after she was born my brother fell ill and was diagnosed with a tumour on the brain he died at 5 years old. This has also happened to 2 aunties and several cousins. The family are hoping my other sister may have broken the curse because she's just had her second child, both are mixed race so neither have red hair.
