Human DNA is programmed to be unique. Our bodies contain about 20,000–25,000 genes responsible for giving you brown hair instead of red or a small forehead instead of a big one. They define your height or lactose tolerance, your risk of heart disease, and how fast you can run.

Even though we are all special, some of us are born with even more genetic diversity. Multiple-color eyes, unique birthmarks, albinism, and vitiligo are to name a few.

To celebrate these differences, the Bored Panda team has collected pictures of people with these (and other) unique features. They remind us to avoid judgment and accept everyone with their own beautifully distinctive qualities.

Melanesia is actually the region the Solomon Islands are in. The Pacific Islands are divided into three regions: Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. So these people are Melanesian, but so are the people in the countries around the Solomon Islands.

The most influential effect of mutation is its role in evolution. Without these changes in DNA, organisms wouldn’t be able to develop further. Genes in certain or different conditions can improve themselves to help the organism adapt. If proven successful, they can be passed on to other generations.

Contrary to common conceptions, human evolution hasn’t stopped. In countries without good healthcare, people who survive infectious diseases can pass on their genetic resistance to their offspring. DNA evidence shows growing resistance to illnesses like malaria and Lassa fever, which saves people’s lives every year. We may also be adapting to unhealthy diets, as our blood pressure and cholesterol are lowering as a response to our fat and sugar-induced diet.

Some genetic varieties have become so common that we don’t consider them to be unique anymore. The mutation that gives people blue eyes is actually quite recent in the history of humans. This change in genes removes the brown pigment from the iris and makes it blue. Researchers were able to trace it back to the first time it occurred in a Spanish person who lived a mere 7,000 years ago.

Red hair is also among the most well-known genetic varieties that people have. While we all might know a person with fiery locks, they are still pretty rare, as only 5–8% of people have this feature.

They’re called Blaschko’s Lines and some skin conditions can make them appear visible to us humans, like in the photo above. Like fingerprints, everyone’s stripes are a lil different :) you can possibly see yours under the right spectrum of light! We are all stripey lil critters :)

Unique genes have very useful effects on an individual’s well-being. For example, most people in the world are lactose intolerant, but due to mutations, it has become possible for them to digest dairy. Lactose-tolerant individuals often originate from northwest Europe and some parts of Africa, where farming became a major source of food.

Additionally, some gene mutations explain why some people don’t get sick. Numerous people have avoided catching diseases during COVID-19, HIV, and other outbreaks. Hyperimmune people can be studied to discover medicines and new ways to treat diseases.

In our family we check the toes. We all have unusually LARGE big toes that are stubby with short nails. We all have this toe. So anyway when my brothers started having kids, we'd joke and always do our "paternity test" and look at toes. It's been a long running joke in our family for several generations.

My mom and I both have a sternum mole. Her’s is slightly to the left, and mine is a perfect square. Sib and I both have a mole on our shoulder blade, same spot. And my nephew has a matching oval, just different spots on our arms. No spots from my dad, but we both have lighter colored eyes (him gray, me pale pale green) that appear to change color. Weirds people out.

I was tested for this as I have many of the traits (tall, arm span is over a foot longer than my height, high arch in the roof of my mouth etc) but it turns out my mine was caused by EDS (similar to the woman with the loose skin, but a different variant) Marfans is a very dangerous condition, as the major blood vessels can just rupture, even at a young age.

My daughter was so tall when she was in the fourth grade that she was tested for this. Her arm span is longer than her body length. She was in the 95% percentile for height at the time. Her grandfather was 6’7” and her great grandfather was 6’10”!

Numerous superheroes in comics, books, and cinematic universes attribute their magical abilities to genetic mutations. Even though it’s largely fictitious, there are specific genetic variations that allow us to have some “super qualities”. For example, a LRP5 gene mutation can increase bone density to the point where it becomes impossible to break them. The bones are known to crack baseball bats and withstand car wrecks.

People with the “short sleeper” mutation naturally need only four hours of sleep to feel totally energized. The lucky 1% of the population can sleep less than the recommended seven to eight hours without feeling sleep deprivation.

A mutation that’s just for the ladies allows them to see a wider range of colors. Known as tetrachromacy, it’s present in about 12% of women, giving them “supervision” to see hues undetectable by other people. That’s why sometimes for men, “all the colors look the same,” while women can’t choose their favorite one.

Moreover, the “sports gene” mutation gives people super speed because it controls fast-twitch muscles, allowing them to flex faster for running and other physical tasks. A study in 2008 found that the majority of top runners and athletes have this mutation. Well, it seems that sometimes it all comes down to your DNA.

it’s essentially a condition where connective tissue is weakened. in my case my joints dislocate abe subluxate easily. other issues include stretchy skin (though this is an extreme and beautiful example!), abnormal scarring, chronic pain, increased risk of POTS and can even affect the heart and circulatory system directly depending on the type. i personally have experienced many of these and more, but the worst is probably my weak pelvic floor. my urethra had diverticuliti removed (weird formation from EDS), other than chronic pain we thought that was the end. NOPE. my organs started falling out lol

This happened to me. It was from something called Horners Syndrome. Went to the doctors and they sent me to an ophthalmologist, who then ordered some tests. After a few CT and MRI scans they found a pseudo-aneurysm in an artery close to my heart which was pushing against my central nerves thus causing the Horners. Along with my pupils, other symptoms of Horners is I would get headaches, only sweat on one side of my face, and have slight paralysis (droopy) in one eyelid. All is fine now, but if it was ignored, the aneurysm would've eventually ruptured and cause me to die very quickly due to internal bleeding. This is all very rare and only happens to like .01% of people, but just felt I should let you know, because you never know. If you have any other symptoms, I would get checked out.

Yeah this is really, really bad for your joints to do. If you can bend them this far back, you are hypermobile, and chances are this hypermobility stems from for example from having EDS. And if you are hypermobile regardless the cause, putting pressure on the joints like this can cause permanent damage to them.

Looks like my legs. Btw. if your knees bend like this, you shouldn't do it too much especially while standing, bc it can wear down the connecting tissues and cause joint pain later (as told by my physical therapist). Great for the shock value tho 😅

I didn't realize I did this until I saw myself in a photograph, knees locked back like that. I was maybe 12 or so. I thought it looked gross and even now when I stand still I make the conscious effort to not overbend. (Am now 30+.) Turns out it was a good call haha

He caught his head in a mechanical... rice picker... but, fortunately, there was an American missionary living close by who was actually a, uh, skilled, uh, plastic surgeon in civilian life...

A couple had their newborn son at home for three days before they noticed he had five fingers and a thumb on each hand. The additional pinkies were so perfectly formed that even the medical pros didn't notice when he was born. That was in the news over a decade ago. Always wondered how that kid was faring and whether or not he took piano lessons.

I knew a girl who had a spot of white hair on the back of her head. She said everyone in her family had the same. As for me, I am a natural blonde with fine hair but have one very thick, almost black hair, sprouting like a wire near my hairline. Had to keep trimming that one off until the one day my friend reached across the table and yanked it out. She said, "That was bugging me."

Wow!!! Okay... This may be what I have then. I've had one streak of pure white hair at the front my hair since I was young, late teens/early 20s. It's pure white, NOT grey. I had naturally jet black hair as a child, but then the pure white hair started appearing when I started puberty at age 10 into 11. It started spreading to the rest of my hair after. It's not that much of a problem, it just annoys me when people assume that I've streaked my hair myself, "Why would you do that to your lovely hair?"... Erm, I haven't, it's natural! I've also got pure white hairs in my eyebrows and hardly any hair on my arms or legs, which saves on razors! The pure white is spreading even further in my hair now but that's probably because I'm now older!

Having an extra (partial) finger is uncommon, but not nearly as uncommon as most people think, it's just that most people will get their child surgery at a young age, so that's why we're not used to actually seeing it. Numbers vary in different studies, but it's somewhere around 0.1% of white people and 1% of black people.

I remember my Mom telling me of a family whose had a daughter with one toe that was larger because it was two toes in one. She just had to buy shoes that were not narrow in the toe area. Her brother had one extra thumb which he would bend against the other one to put on gloves. When he joined the Canadian Army during World War 2 (returned home), he had surgery on that hand to remove the extra thumb.

Unless these have been marked over to show up on the photo this person needs to see a dermatologist ASAP as those are not normal freckles. (My aunt had skin cancer which was very similar).

I looked thru his comments on the post on Reddit and he's had them since he was a young boy, he's been seen periodically throughout his life by dermatologists and it's nothing serious. It's similar to a birthmark but broken up into tiny pieces. He's just been advised to keep an eye on it and to see a doctor if there's any changes.

Externally the limbs are longer than normal. Face is long and eyes are further apart like this girl. Internally there are also some major issues. I knew a young mother who died after her second baby. The Marfan's gave her a bad heart and they couldn't repair it. The baby was only 3 weeks old.

I've developed this. Every medical website says that it's painless. Ha! Even a little salt burns my tongue like a ghost pepper, citrus is unbearable, toothpaste is even worse. Plus, I have to brush or scrape my tongue constantly because there's a high risk of infection. It can be caused by a number of things, including hormone changes, some medications, having psoriasis, dry eye/mouth syndrome... I hate it.

they are called tori and can occur on the roof of the mouth and other places. They make X-rays uncomfortable to have taken but usually don't need treatment unless a denture is needed and then they have to be removed. They are slow growing but can actually "meet" under the tongue

Actually no, a diagnostic criteria is that the thumb would extend past the end of the palm by the pinky. Please stop saying EDS on every post, hypermobility exists without the other diagnoses that accompany EDS

Is it just the perspective it is this person's thumb also extremely long? Is that why the joint is so much higher?

I can bend just the top joint of my finger while the bottom stays straight. I am also incapable of flattening my hand without manual assistance. Didn't know that wasn't normal until my late high school years.

I cleaned the car from the snow without wearing gloves once and my finger turned the same white as in this photo. During that winter, it would turn white every time it got cold. That winter ended and I never had this happen to me again. This was about 10 winters ago.

There are no muscles in our digits (fingers, thumbs and toes). The muscles that move them are further up. That's why you see the tendons move in your hand when you wiggle your fingers, those are the attachments transmitting the muscle power down to your fingers.

Mine don't as a rule, but I've had similar ridges after bouts of eczema on my hands which apparently affects the nail bed causing ridges on the nail as it grows out. I imagine injuries, infections or other conditions might also have a similar effect.

So this is from over a year ago. It was cold in the bar so we googled it and figured she has Raynaud’s disease. She said it only happens when it’s cold. She’s alive and well. I will send her the link to this and let her decide if she wants to discuss it with her doctor.

It totally depends on how long the person has been wearing the trousers. Most people will take an imprint of they have been wearing the trousers for a while. Some people will imprint within seconds.
