Human DNA is programmed to be unique. Our bodies contain about 20,000–25,000 genes responsible for giving you brown hair instead of red or a small forehead instead of a big one. They define your height or lactose tolerance, your risk of heart disease, and how fast you can run.
Even though we are all special, some of us are born with even more genetic diversity. Multiple-color eyes, unique birthmarks, albinism, and vitiligo are to name a few.
To celebrate these differences, the Bored Panda team has collected pictures of people with these (and other) unique features. They remind us to avoid judgment and accept everyone with their own beautifully distinctive qualities.

Load More Replies...The most influential effect of mutation is its role in evolution. Without these changes in DNA, organisms wouldn’t be able to develop further. Genes in certain or different conditions can improve themselves to help the organism adapt. If proven successful, they can be passed on to other generations.
Contrary to common conceptions, human evolution hasn’t stopped. In countries without good healthcare, people who survive infectious diseases can pass on their genetic resistance to their offspring. DNA evidence shows growing resistance to illnesses like malaria and Lassa fever, which saves people’s lives every year. We may also be adapting to unhealthy diets, as our blood pressure and cholesterol are lowering as a response to our fat and sugar-induced diet.

Vitiligo Appreciation Post. Took Me 28 Years To Realize That I’m Blessed
I'm sorry it took so long for you to understand that. I hope you have loving people around you. Honestly it looks really cool.
I have it too but I’m pale skinned so it’s not as noticeable. People have told me they think it’s beautiful and it surprises me every time because it’s not part of our “normal” culturally recognized standard of beauty. I’m enjoying reading positive comments about this handsome gentleman. 🙂
My Brother Was Born With Brown Eyes And A Slice Of Blue
I have a blue eye with a slice of brown. The doctor thinks it’s a birthmark. My ex had one too and our daughter was born with it as well.
I was born with teal eyes with a gold ring around the middle!
Some genetic varieties have become so common that we don’t consider them to be unique anymore. The mutation that gives people blue eyes is actually quite recent in the history of humans. This change in genes removes the brown pigment from the iris and makes it blue. Researchers were able to trace it back to the first time it occurred in a Spanish person who lived a mere 7,000 years ago.
Red hair is also among the most well-known genetic varieties that people have. While we all might know a person with fiery locks, they are still pretty rare, as only 5–8% of people have this feature.
"Uncombable Hair Syndrome" Is A Rare And Harmless Condition That Disappears Around Puberty
Has he been through puberty & become a man yet?

Often disappears around puberty but not always, Albert Einstein and boris johnson are the obvious examples. I have a client (I’m a hairdresser) with this condition and she’s well into her 60s
So what do you do to her hair if its uncomable?

Humans Have Relics Of Growth As A Fetus, Representing Cell Division And Trails. They Are Invisible Under Normal Conditions But Can Become Apparent On The Skin Due To "Genetic Mosaicism"
Almost gives Van Gogh Starry Night vibes. I could think someone could do a outline tattoo with this and it would look amazing.
Fun fact, everyone has these lines or “stripes” but they’re not visible to our human eyesight. They’re called Blaschko’s Lines and some skin conditions can make them appear visible to us humans, like in the photo above. Like fingerprints, everyone’s stripes are a lil different :) you can possibly see yours under the right spectrum of light! We are all stripey lil critters :)
Load More Replies...Unique genes have very useful effects on an individual’s well-being. For example, most people in the world are lactose intolerant, but due to mutations, it has become possible for them to digest dairy. Lactose-tolerant individuals often originate from northwest Europe and some parts of Africa, where farming became a major source of food.
Additionally, some gene mutations explain why some people don’t get sick. Numerous people have avoided catching diseases during COVID-19, HIV, and other outbreaks. Hyperimmune people can be studied to discover medicines and new ways to treat diseases.
Girl In The Philippines Has A Genetic Mutation Of Blue Eyes
A lot of Philippinos have Spanish heritage. Some Spaniards have Viking heritage.

Even though it’s largely fictitious, there are specific genetic variations that allow us to have some “super qualities”. People with the “short sleeper” mutation naturally need only four hours of sleep to feel totally energized. The lucky 1% of the population can sleep less than the recommended seven to eight hours without feeling sleep deprivation.

A mutation that’s just for the ladies allows them to see a wider range of colors. Known as tetrachromacy, it’s present in about 12% of women, giving them “supervision” to see hues undetectable by other people. That’s why sometimes for men, “all the colors look the same,” while women can’t choose their favorite one.
Moreover, the “sports gene” mutation gives people super speed because it controls fast-twitch muscles, allowing them to flex faster for running and other physical tasks. A study in 2008 found that the majority of top runners and athletes have this mutation. Well, it seems that sometimes it all comes down to your DNA.

Load More Replies...Could someone explain the syndrome a bit further? (Before you ask, I've googled it but haven't found a simple explanation)
it’s essentially a condition where connective tissue is weakened. in my case my joints dislocate abe subluxate easily. other issues include stretchy skin (though this is an extreme and beautiful example!), abnormal scarring, chronic pain, increased risk of POTS and can even affect the heart and circulatory system directly depending on the type. i personally have experienced many of these and more, but the worst is probably my weak pelvic floor. my urethra had diverticuliti removed (weird formation from EDS), other than chronic pain we thought that was the end. Started As A Sudden Bald Patch In My Beard, Grew Back Ghost White. Used To Hate It But Now I Love It
"Hair turned white overnight" is a real phenomenon and works this way. A sudden bald patch that grows back white.
I have alopecia, hair falls out, comes in white and turns brown over time. Had a white patch in the back for a few years that looked pretty cool.
My mothers hair turned snow white when my brother died. Grew back brown and is now going white again due to age.
When I was a young (20yo) Lieutenant in the Army I developed a skin condition that prevented me from shaving. So I grew a beard and discovered most of it was white. Everybody on base loved to call me "General". Finally I shaved it despite of the painful rash.
Anisocoria Is Unequal Pupils, If Suddenly Developed It Can Indicate Brain Pressure From Stroke, TBI, Or Other Serious Conditions (I’m Fine, Happened Sunday)
This happened to me. It was from something called Horners Syndrome. Went to the doctors and they sent me to an ophthalmologist, who then ordered some tests. After a few CT and MRI scans they found a pseudo-aneurysm in an artery close to my heart which was pushing against my central nerves thus causing the Horners. Along with my pupils, other symptoms of Horners is I would get headaches, only sweat on one side of my face, and have slight paralysis (droopy) in one eyelid. All is fine now, but if it was ignored, the aneurysm would've eventually ruptured and cause me to die very quickly due to internal bleeding. This is all very rare and only happens to like .01% of people, but just felt I should let you know, because you never know. If you have any other symptoms, I would get checked out.
Yeah, that needs monitoring by a medical professional.

I Have Always Had The Ability To Bend My Legs Backwards - So Easily, In Fact, That I Sometimes Do It Without Noticing. Most People Seem To Find It Alarming
Looks like EDS (I have the same hyper mobile form) or at least hyper mobility syndrome. I thought this was a fun party trick, along with other flexible joint stunts, now I'm a full time wheelchair user
Yeah this is really, really bad for your joints to do. If you can bend them this far back, you are hypermobile, and chances are this hypermobility stems from for example from having EDS. And if you are hypermobile regardless the cause, putting pressure on the joints like this can cause permanent damage to them.

I have it as well but due to my light hair it's not as noticeable. Just looks like sun bleached hair...
Wow!!! Okay... This may be what I have then. I've had one streak of pure white hair at the front my hair since I was young, late teens/early 20s. It's pure white, NOT grey. I had naturally jet black hair as a child, but then the pure white hair started appearing when I started puberty at age 10 into 11. It started spreading to the rest of my hair after. It's not that much of a problem, it just annoys me when people assume that I've streaked my hair myself, "Why would you do that to your lovely hair?"... Erm, I haven't, it's natural! I've also got pure white hairs in my eyebrows and hardly any hair on my arms or legs, which saves on razors! The pure white is spreading even further in my hair now but that's probably because I'm now older!

Having an extra (partial) finger is uncommon, but not nearly as uncommon as most people think, it's just that most people will get their child surgery at a young age, so that's why we're not used to actually seeing it. Numbers vary in different studies, but it's somewhere around 0.1% of white people and 1% of black people.
I remember my Mom telling me of a family whose had a daughter with one toe that was larger because it was two toes in one. She just had to buy shoes that were not narrow in the toe area. Her brother had one extra thumb which he would bend against the other one to put on gloves. When he joined the Canadian Army during World War 2 (returned home), he had surgery on that hand to remove the extra thumb.
one of my friends had an extra finger but it was removed, honestly dont understand why it would be, more finger = more grip = less drop = less phone breaks

She looks like a pixie! (some commenters here are getting their knickers all twisted over you complimenting a lady in a photo for some reason, but please keep being you, the world needs more love and compliments 😊)

Many people are flexible and/or hypermobile without having an associated condition. But hEDS is a chronic illness, and hypermobility is just one of many symptoms that can be present.
Load More Replies...I've Got Too Many Bones In My Mouth
A few years ago, my dentist said to me: “do you know you have mandibular tori?” Uh no... the first time I saw this dentist, I was 11, he waited until I was 30 to tell me.
Load More Replies...My daughter has this problem. She has 6 incisors. They pulled one on each side to allow her teeth to close the gap and ease the pain in her mouth from the other two incisors coming down pushing the two that were removed. Come to find out when she had to get some teeth removed she had two more incisors! Poor kid!
When I got dental surgery they actually shaved down the bones inside of my jaw.. under the tongue. It made the recovery so much more painful 😕
It's not too many bones, it's growing extra bone. My mouth is doing it too...dentist says it'll really suck if I ever need dentures and if it keeps growing, surgery!
they are called tori and can occur on the roof of the mouth and other places. They make X-rays uncomfortable to have taken but usually don't need treatment unless a denture is needed and then they have to be removed. They are slow growing but can actually "meet" under the tongue
Hypermobile Thumbs Allow Me To Make Them Non-Opposable If I Want
Actually no, a diagnostic criteria is that the thumb would extend past the end of the palm by the pinky. Please stop saying EDS on every post, hypermobility exists without the other diagnoses that accompany EDS

same! i didn’t know until i saw a different post with it where there’s even more!
Load More Replies...I had them and they irritated me so much, I bit and cut them off (not very painful).

The Way My Fiancé’s Toes Line Up
I Can Bend My Toes Back To My Foot
Okay but please don't. Your joints will be much happier later if you don't do this.
I have nerve damage in my right leg. If I attempt to bend my toes like on my left leg, it feels very painful. And this picture is painful to look at!
The Bottom Joint Is Higher In Both Of My Thumbs
Is it just the perspective it is this person's thumb also extremely long? Is that why the joint is so much higher?
I Have A "Hitchhiker's" Ring Finger And Can Bend The Joints Separately
I can bend just the top joint of my finger while the bottom stays straight. I am also incapable of flattening my hand without manual assistance. Didn't know that wasn't normal until my late high school years.

Finger Turned White After Staying Out In The Cold Rowing
You’re sure you don’t have Raynaud’s like the woman in the previous post?
I suspect they probably do. I don’t know if they know it or not though.
Load More Replies...I Have No Knuckle In My Left Thumb. It's Smaller Than My Right As Muscles Have Not Built Up And I Have No Wrinkles At The Joint
There are no muscles in our digits (fingers, thumbs and toes). The muscles that move them are further up. That's why you see the tendons move in your hand when you wiggle your fingers, those are the attachments transmitting the muscle power down to your fingers.
My Thumb Nail Has Ridges
Mine don't as a rule, but I've had similar ridges after bouts of eczema on my hands which apparently affects the nail bed causing ridges on the nail as it grows out. I imagine injuries, infections or other conditions might also have a similar effect.
Load More Replies...I have ridges that are the full length of the nail, not like this. Mine are due to EDS and bad connective tissue.
My Friend’s Corpse Hand
So this is from over a year ago. It was cold in the bar so we googled it and figured she has Raynaud’s disease. She said it only happens when it’s cold. She’s alive and well. I will send her the link to this and let her decide if she wants to discuss it with her doctor.
My Dad had Raynaud's. We think he had RA, as do my sister and myself. We don't have Raynaud's, though. At least not yet.
I might have this? my hands often change to purple or odd colors making my hands look dead
I can't see what's wrong. Can someone help please? All I see is two hands with different skin tones
Look at the other pics of unnaturally white fingers. It's the same thing, Raynaud's, where digits get cold and white/ blue.

It's called a Spider Nevis. My son and my niece have one in just about the same place.
I had one when I was sa kid, I always thought it was an angioma! It went away when I was in elementary school. I remember it was under my right eye and I used it to remember which side was right and which was left

It totally depends on how long the person has been wearing the trousers. Most people will take an imprint of they have been wearing the trousers for a while. Some people will imprint within seconds.
Load More Replies...My intire body does that so if I sit on a printed thing I will get the design on my legs or arm or face
Idk about this. When I have my laptop on my lap while wearing shorts, I get the exact same thing. And, it gets perfectly imprinted like this too.
Can you help me out here? I have this too. And to all of you saying the jeans are too tight, no that is not the reason! I'll give an other example. Sit down on a woven chair for 5 minutes. Run around with a fancy pattern on your butt/legs for up to 30minutes
Load More Replies...It happens to me but my pants are fitted, not tight. I thought it happened to everyone who wears a skinny style of jeans though.

As someone with Vitiligo I don't see characters on TV with it. It would be great seeing a main character on a TV show have it. Disabilities and conditions are still mostly invisible on TV.
Yes! For something that seems fairly common I never see it. I'm lucky I'm quite pale so mine isn't quite so obvious but I get so excited when I see someone else with it!!

Some comments were terrible and rude I didn't finish because it upset me
